Obama slams Romney for Jeep ad in Ohio

HILLIARD, Ohio -- At his first campaign event since the release of the final jobs report before Election Day, President Barack Obama reprised his auto-centric Ohio economic pitch, slamming Mitt Romney for what he said were deceptive ads claiming Jeep was moving its business overseas.

He suggested that such a claim, debunked by both Chrysler executives and multiple fact-checkers, made workers here unnecessarily fearful for their jobs.

President Obama continued his tour through Ohio with a campaign stop in Springfield, Oh., where he continued to criticize Governor Romney for running deceptive Jeep ads saying "This is not a game, these are people's jobs."

“You've got folks who work at the Jeep plant who've been calling their employers, worried. Asking, is it true? Are our jobs being shipped to China? And the reason they're making these calls is because Governor Romney's been running an ad that says so,” Obama said, speaking to 2,800 supporters at the Franklin County Fairgrounds here.

“Everybody knows it’s not true,” he continued. “The car companies themselves had told Gov. Romney to knock it off.”

Recommended: Ryan lambastes jobs report: 'We are 9 million jobs short'

He said Romney was trying to cause such controversy as a last-ditch attempt to gloss over his opposition to the auto bailout, to the detriment of workers here.

“I understand that Gov. Romney's had a tough time here in Ohio because he was against saving the auto industry," Obama said, "and it's hard to run away from that position when you're on videotape saying the words ‘let Detroit go bankrupt.’”

He concluded, “You don't scare hardworking Americans just to scare up some votes."

This sort of populist appeal to auto- and other blue-collar workers has paid dividends for Obama in Rust Belt states like Ohio. He’s faring better among white working-class males in those states than he is with that group in the rest of the country.

Obama spent less time here talking about the latest 7.9 percent unemployment figure, touting the fact that companies hired more workers in October than at any time in the past eight months but quickly moving on.

He continued his tour through smaller Ohio towns, stopping next in Springfield, Ohio.

This is what I don't get about Romney: EVERYONE democratic and republican alike KNOWS that that ad is a bald faced LIE. As in factually incorrect. Is he stupid or does he honestly just want to annoy people. Maybe he thinks voters are stupid? Sighs.

Also, Romney will say and do anything to win and that includes making sh*t up and exploiting Hurricane Sandy fo photo op with a can of tuna.

It is not in any way a lie, however it is misleading.

Those jeeps that WILL be built in China are going to be for the Chinese. The Jeeps that China buys today are built in the USA... so now our exports will take a hit, our trade balance will take a hit, and our JOBS will also take a hit, as we won't be producing the ones that go to China.

Nothing Romney said was a lie.

Get the facts people!

And I for one have no idea why Romney is trying to pin this on Obama in the first place, FIAT owns Chrysler, we don't really have "much" control over what an Italian company can and will do, IMHO.

Yah, Sirie, so take it one step further. If we finally get rid of the stupid laws that allow American companies to make massive profits overseas while paying absolutely no taxes on those profits, maybe if Chrysler actually sells more Jeeps in China, it would actually do something for the nation instead of just doing something for Chrysler. Jobs in America will not take a hit unless the market for Jeeps shrinks. If they sell more Jeeps in China because the new Jeeps they are making there are cheaper for the Chinese to buy, the market isn't going to shrink and Chrysler is going to keep getting stronger.

Which means its facilities everywhere will get more secure.

Michael Thompson, Charlotte, NC...."Chrysler is going to keep getting stronger."

And it's still owned by FIAT....

So, P.0bama used taxpayer money to craft the Chrysler bankruptcy in favor of the Unions (i.e.---fill their empty pension accounts) and then sold it to the Italians, who bought it after it didn't have $$Billions in unfunded Pension liabilities...Where will those "Chinese " JEEP profits and taxes go ???...The U.S. ??...I think not.

Romney ad did not claim U.S. jobs were going to China.....just no new jobs in U.S. for JEEP sales to China and other overseas markets....

I bet the Chinese JEEPS will end up being sold all over the Far East, Middle East, Russia, Iran....They will all be able to pay less for a Chinese made JEEP than an American made JEEP.

I predict that as Union Demands grow, within a few years FIAT will abandon its U.S. operations after the overseas plants are up and running full speed.

I don't understand the problem Micheal, if WE are building those jeeps that the Chinese are driving, and we WON'T be building them when the factory opens in China, then WE won't be paid to make them, paid to ship them, thus JOBS LOST in America. Say we build 100 Jeeps a day, 90 for America, 10 for China. Now instead we will build 90 a day, as 10 will be built by the Chinese.

Math is pretty simple on this one...

jennilee1959....Really ????

"Coming hot on the heels of speculation that some Jeep production may be moved to China comes a bombshell from a Bloomberg report. Fiat is now considering moving Chrysler and Jeep production to Italy.

According to the piece, “To counter the severe slump in European sales, (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, for export to North America. The Italian government is evaluating tax rebates on export goods to help Fiat. Marchionne may announce details of his plan as soon as Oct. 30, the people said.”

So, let’s be real clear here, we are talking about vehicles that will be built in Italy and exported to America. The evidence is clear that Fiat is looking at ways to move production of vehicles from the US to elsewhere, whether it be China or Italy, costing American jobs. This is becoming indisputable, despite outcries from certain parties to the contrary."

sirie,

The math is even simpler than that. With the tariffs that are now in place, we sell close to ZERO jeeps in China, because they are too expensive. When Jeep builds a factory there, just a GM did long ago, the prices will come down to where Chinese buyers can afford them. Chrysler's profits go up, which is also good for American Chrysler employees.

Were Mittens to win, you can rest assured that ALL Chrysler manufacturing will be outsourced to either China or Italy. Get a CLUE, folks!

#2.21 - Fri Nov 2, 2012 4:56 PM EDT

Sirie-- The tariffs that the U.S. has to pay to the chinese to import Jeeps is extremley prohibitive, therefore it is more cost effective to build them in China, who are the largest purchasers of them. This is how things have been done for years, if a country that we import goods to have huge import taxes or tariffs, and the importer, does not want to see the cost of his goods rise in the country in which he manufactures them, due to those tariffs, then he usually builds a facility in that country, especially if the demand for his goods is very high in that particular country. BUT, that does NOT mean that they cease to manufacture that product in their OWN country.

You people are aware that it isn't just American cars being built in foreign countries. There are foreign companies that build cars in America. My Toyota is as American built as your Chrysler. It just makes sense to build the cars in the country where they will be sold.

I'm much more concerned about other American companies which are taking most if not all jobs to other countries, such as Hershey's. This needs to be addressed. The President needs to come up with a bill which rewards companies for manufacturing in America. Oh, that's right, HE ALREADY DID! Republicans felt it was a terrible idea as it would lessen their chances on election day.

either way GM could not find the capital they needed to survive through a privatized bankruptcy. They would have been bought out and liquidated via the Bain's of the financial world after entering proceedings. The bailout kept this from happening by giving the money GM needed to survive through bankruptcy with conditions that it be paid back with interest.

Lockheed Martin is laying off 123,000 workers just weeks before Christmas. The President is trying to hold off any announcement until after the election. This will make a significant increase to the questionable 7.8% Unemployment number.

Lockheed is going to lay off 123,000 defense workers due to Obama's downsizing of the military. The law requires Lockheed to give 60-day notice to all to be fired employees within 60 days. That drop dead date would be November 1st. Since this would be devastating to his reelection, Obama has promised that our government would cover all Lockheed severance packages to fired employees if Lockheed would not release the names and locations of those losing their jobs until after the election!! Do you have any idea how many millions that will cost the taxpayer? Thank you Obama.!!

As to those facts being a conspiracy? Well, guess in the Obama supporters world, any facts that don't look good for Obama become 'conspiracy?'

One of Romney's plans:

TOTAL lies and deceptions.

Of course Romney wanted GM to go bankrupt.

There was no "private" money available to save GM and so there would be a liquidation.

All warranties void, all dealers out of business, all parts suppliers out of business, millions of workers out of jobs.

Who benefits? Vulture capitalists like Romney's Bain.

Buy up the assets for pennies on the dollar. Sell the patents, sell the manufacturing equipment. Make millions on the blood of the laid off employees of all those companies who made up the auto industry. And make no mistake; even Ford admitted that if the suppliers went out of business they would have folded too. If you think this is the "American Way" you need to go somewhere else to live.

It's a disgrace to all those Americans who have sacrificed for the good of the entire country, not just a few greedy pigs.

Actually, what you just posted isn't exactly correct. Romney stated that GM should face bankruptcy and reorganization and those items should have happened six months earlier. He also stated that the government should have stepped in to guarantee the warranties. You also neglect to state or post the thousand who did indeed go out of business as a result of Obama's actions, like car dealerships and the investors who lost millions. Guess they aren't important in your narrative?

You also fail to examine the current situation with the new and improved reorganization, and you also fail to note just what the overseas expansions are really all about. I hope you read the link, it might open your eyes as to what is REALLY happening with GM and your 'former' tax dollars.

Mitt and Ann Romney made at least $15.3 million from the bailout..and a few of Romney's most important Wall Street donors made more than $4 billion. This is an interesting read, link below, talk about hypocrites. Just another reason why Romney does not want you to see his tax returns!

In September, the Obama campaign launched television ads blasting Romney's November 2008 New York Times op-ed, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." But Romney has done a good job of concealing, until now, the fact that he and his wife, Ann, personally gained at least $15.3 million from the bailout—and a few of Romney's most important Wall Street donors made more than $4 billion. Their gains, and the Romneys', were astronomical—more than 3,000 percent on their investment.

Romney's "job creators" did create jobs—in China, where Delphi now produces the parts used by GM and other major automakers here and abroad. Delphi is now incorporated overseas, leaving the company with 5,000 employees in the United States (versus almost 100,000 abroad).

Additional subsidies are in the form of highway and road expenditures without which there would be significantly less demand.

              A couple of thoughts -

There are several reasons why the economic recovery is slower than previous times:

              1) Much of our manufacturing (when compared to previous levels) has been outsourced. This means factories and supply chains were shut down and would need to be re-established before jobs in the afffected sectors can be recovered. In many places, the manufacturing jobs have been gone so long that the supporting physical, energy, and communciations infrastructure is outdated.

              2) We particiapte in a global economy and like it or not we are directly impacted by other country's economic status.

              3) De-regulation, as initiated several adminstrations ago, allowed larger companies to start to exhibit robber baron status. They lied, cheated, and stole from the average person. This de-regulation led directly to a lopsided allocation of economic input and out-take by a few sectors (think banking for example) which in turn diminshed the capacity of MANY businesses to achieve stable and supportable growth curves.

President Obama had to start at below scratch in order to re-establish growth AND deal with the deliberate and pre-planned economic obstructionism of the Republican Party. Blaming the President for "growth is too slow" is simply wrong and ignores real world facts.

And unless the President just abolishes congress, what exactly is he supposed to do about the fact that American corporations can establish plants in China where the workers will work for 99 cents an hour AND where the products made in these factories can be sold absolutely tax free until the profits are 'repatriated,' which will happen a week from never, given the historical behavior of most corps?

What is Mitt Romney intending to do about this? Anything?

The American economy is driven by masses of people working. It is not driven by an ever-shrinking collection of corporations making massive profits and generating a grand total of 1% of GDP tax revenue from those profits.

That is what is utterly ridiculous about the argument that Romney makes about corporations being overtaxed. Corporate taxes right now are 1% as a percentage of GDP. 1%. That is the lowest percentage of taxes actually collected from corporations in well... ever.

Add to all of the above the fact that the Republicans met on the night of President Obama's inauguration and plotted their strategy of obstructionism and publicly stated that their main goal was not the recovery of the economy but to limit the President to one term. It didn't matter what the cost was to their fellow citizens. If the GOP had supported any of the President's initiatives our recovery would be further along.

I would take it a step further and say slow growth is the best way. It's difficult when people are hurting, and we are used to an "I want it now" attitude, but it's the only way to grow stronger. When Reagan was in office we had a quick recovery. The problem is it was a deception. We found that we could have a robust economy by borrowing to buy whatever we wanted. It was under Reagan that we started getting into this deep debt that we are unable to get out of (everyone remember Ross Perot?). Unfortunately, individuals were doing the same thing, living on credit. It quickly got to the point that people could no longer get out of it. We are now at a point that people have slowed the credit and are beginning to save again. This makes for a slow recovery as people aren't buying at a rapid pace, but a more solid ground.

The Democrat inspired Sub Prime loan debacle is what started the slide. Bush should have done something about it. Plenty of blame to go around on both sides. Obama's policies are causing lenders to hang on to their money. No loans, no growth. They are not comfortable with the prospect of four more years of a anti business administration nor the fiscal cliff we are driving over. I'd rather be in the ditch than over the cliff any day.

A politically inspired debacle, eh? I had no idea CountryWide and others were run by democrats. Thank for enlightening us. Sure seems he had a lot of GOPers in his pockets.

In a 10/22/12 Bloomberg article regarding Jeep output moving to China: "The volume opportunity for us is very significant," Manley, who is also president of the Jeep brand, said in an interview at Chrysler's Auburn Hills, Michigan, headquarters. "We're reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity" as well as "should we be localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio."

So Chrysler is, indeed, considering moving the entire Jeep portfolio to China.

Oscar - again, wrong. Chrysler is considering opening a manufacturing plant in China to build Jeeps that will be sold in CHINA because it is a requirement. They will NOT move production from the US but add production in China for vehicles to be sold there!

              Okay, basic common sense.

Jeep sells about 125k Jeep Wranglers in the U.S. every year.

Jeep sells about 30k Jeep Wranglers in ALL OVERSEAS MARKETS every year.

The notion that Fiat would close down American facilities to open new facilities in China so that they would then have to turn around and ship 80% of the Wranglers produces there back across the Pacific ocean when that flies in the face of every practice in Automobile manufacturing is just dumb.

              Just flat out dumb.

And it proves that the people talking about this have absolutely no clue how the global automobile industry works.

Michael T., it may be a dumb idea. But the president of the Jeep brand said they were considering it. Therefore, no one "lied." It's Hussein that's trying to make a big deal of it because he has nothing else to run on.

So "portfolio" means the entire US manufacturing base for Jeep? I would have never have thought that. What a reasonable person might think is that "portfolio" is used in regards to the brand offerings that are currently available in the US. Like maybe they'll make some Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, but not the Libertys or Patriots. But hey, you're obvioud much smarter than the rest of us, so you must be right.

It was the D's who are pushing the Personhood amendments in various states, it's the D's who are attaching riders like repealing the PPACA to bills that go to the Senate.

It's D's who are putting out candidates like Sharon Angle and Christine O'Donnel. Not to mention Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin and the guy with the Moose-wall who called evolution "lies straight from the pits of hell".

And who benefits? Certainly, the family benefits because they are able to eat but what of the employer? Doesn't that small business guy get a government subsidy that enable him to find workers when he obviously can't or won't pay them a living wage? Assuming the worker produced a product or performed a service that advanced the profitability of the small business owner, isn't the government subsidy to the worker enabling the profitability of the owner?

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY...things were bad and about to get worse.....
Today, as this job report shows....things are getting better, much better

              Auto sales
Four years ago, the automobile market collapsed to its lowest point in 25 years. Sales in October 2008 declined by 32 percent over a year earlier, projecting to an annual rate of 10.6 million. Three weeks later sales would Read More... plummet to 50 year lows. Today, sales are robust and all the major car companies except Nissan registered year-on-year growth, and the annual rate is projected to 14.3 million.

              ADP report
Private sector employers added 158,000 jobs in October 2012, according to ADP. The initial ADP report for October 2008 counted 157,000 jobs cut. And that number was eventually revised upwards to 440,000 jobs lost. By January job losses were averaging 600,000 a month.

              Manufacturing
The Institute for Supply Management’s factory index rose to 51.7 in October 2012. Anything over 50 represents expansion. The comparable number in October 2008 was a dismal 38.9 — which at the time represented the lowest mark in many years. But it was headed still further down. By March it would be 31.4.

              Home Foreclosures
US Home Foreclosures Down To Pre-Recession Numbers
Mortgage default, auction and repossession filings were reported for 531,576 residential properties in the third quarter, a 5 percent decline from the second quarter and an 11 percent drop from last year. September saw 180,427 new foreclosures, down nearly 7 percent compared with August and down 16 percent from the comparable month last year.

The same kinds of numbers could be generated for housing starts, housing sales, personal bankruptcies and business bankruptcies.

Those are the numbers. They do not lie. Four years ago this week, as Americans prepared to cast their ballots, the economy was collapsing, in the middle of its worst downward spiral since the outset of the Great Depression.

Today it is growing. Not as quickly as we would like, but it’s still healthier than at any point in the last four years.

That's why the polls are correct- most of us understand this, even if "most" is a very narrow majority.

Those word 'let Detroit go bankrupt' were never said and he is referring to a byline above an op-ed piece by the Governor in the NY Times that the Times titled "Let the Auto Makers Go Bankrupt".

Which really meant into a managed bankruptcy, which they did even on Obama's watch, with fed funds on the back-end of the deal as needed which Obama simply gave them up front - to buy himself union votes in the rust belt.

What a fawking fraud. GM stock will need to double from $25 to $50 a share just for we taxpayers to break even on our stimulus money he took to buy votes. What a jerkwad!

Frisby - bag the BS. Obama's solution also sent GM to managed bankruptcy as Romney said upfront would be required.

Why did Obama give the cash up front without even knowing the whys and wherefores first? Is that good business? No, it is not. Which is why Romney, a proven businessman, wrote that fed funds should be made available on the back end so cash is spent wisely and not foolishly.

What was Obama's motivation since with Romney or Obama GM would be saved albeit in a more sound way using the Romney model?

rebel - there were NO private investors willing to provide funding. IF GM had gone through the bankrutpcy as advocated by Gov. Romeny, it would have been broken up and sold in parts. The business and those jobs would have been gone forever.

The federal government was the only entity with the deep enough pockets willing to let GM go through bankruptcy and keep it basically intact. By doing it the way it was done, the business still exists, it's number one in the world market, and the jobs were recovered.

Matthew, another liar. Or just a very bad MBA. Phoenix Online graduate or something such.

Romney advocated for fed funds to stave off that very situation from occurring on a widespread basis that leads to your domino effect. But on the back end.

No creditor would not have worked with GM to get things under control. And if there were bad eggs in the GM basket, as you say there are unequivocally, then what solution to the underlying problems has Obama addressed with OUR cash?

Answer: zero. Which means it is not if, but when, GM and Chrysler will find themselves right back to where they were before Obama, the non-businessman, interfered. Let me give you a clue: legacy costs. Look it up and get back to us.

So, the right wing trolls who apparently hate this site, yet spend hours on it spreading lies, are trying to cover up the Romney crap about "saving the car industry". Yeah, Romney said they should go bankrupt, whether you want to admit it or not - he showed his business acumen (not) by saying private interests would invest in the companies and get them going again. Except there were no private investors interested in doing so, although maybe some might be interested in liquidating them, jerks like Bain. Then the companies are gone. And their suppliers. And any ancillary companies. All so the righties can beat their chests and show everyone how "smart" they are.

If ignorance is bliss, you folks must be in seventh heaven.

It is one thing to misrepresent your opponent's record, or to inflate your own, or to exaggerate your opponent's failures and your own successes. These kinds of things aren't honest, but generally happen in politics.

It is another thing entirely to flat out LIE about third parties, in ways that do immediate and real harm to fourth parties, as Romney is doing now, LYING about GM and Chrysler, and harming GM and Chrysler employees (which I suppose Romney doesn't care about because they are members of a union).

This kind of egregious dishonest quite frankly ethically disqualifies Romney from the Presidency. He is simply too immoral a person to serve.

At this stage, Obama could be a cardboard box with zero accomplishments (neither or which is true) and it would still be morally imperative to vote for him. Romney and with him the entire Republican Party's unethical behavior simply cannot be rewarded at the ballot box.

When the choice is between zero and a negative number, you choose zero.

When the choice is between an actually very positive number and a negative number, the choice is even more obvious.

                Not Romney/Not Ryan 2012.

And consider the political practicality of such adds. How many people in Ohio and Michigan are employees of GM and Chrysler? How many of these people get access to direct communication from their employer directly debunking these lies? Just who does Romney think he'll fool? When you lie about GM and Chrysler in Ohio and Michigan, you should expect that your lies will be called out pretty much immediately.

This is the kind of political strategy that can only be called incompetent. What would a President Romney do when he has to present America's case diplomatically when negotiating with the likes of Putin, the Chinese, Iran, the UN? At least when the Bush administration lied there was plausible deniability. Pull a dishonest stunt like what Romney is doing here on the international stage and he would make America the world's laughingstock.

This level of INCOMPETENCE disqualifies Romney from the Presidency.

                titansidewinder,

The jeeps that will be made by Chinese workers will be jeeps that they can afford to purchase. The ones made here are not. The reasons go beyond labor costs, and are mainly due to transportation costs and tariffs placed on imports - just like we do to vehicles manufactured outside of the U.S.

China has a VERY HIGH tariff tax rate for imports, why fiat wants to build jeeps there to sell. But we get all there exports sent here with little to no tariff?

Hey, titansidewinder, stumble on the truth much? There may be a few Jeeps being sold in China, but they would be few and far between, as the cost would be prohibitive. The output of plants here that send cars to China would be of little impact, but you go ahead and try to cover up for your lying candidate. Unions and media trying to control the election? Give me a break - your candidate lies and his crones threaten to fire workers if they don't vote for Romney, yet you point a finger at the unions and the media? Who do you think you are kidding? Speaking of food stamps and the growth of people on food stamps, let us not forget how many people really shouldn't be on food stamps. I bet they are taking up a good portion of the food stamp users by scamming the states. So the growth in food stamps, I don't really believe all that much. Take out the people who should not be on them and who are getting a free ride, you may find the numbers much lower. I get tired of walking out of the store and the person in front of me has paid with food stamps and they are getting into their Lexus, BMW, Hummer etc. The lady who works at the Wal-Mart fuel center drives a BMW SUV. I drive a Hyundai and work for a city municipality. What's wrong with that picture?

I have yet to see copies of letters that Ryan sent to the Bush and Obama administrations requesting that the WI plant and other manufacturing facilities in WI stay open. Letters for stimulus "grants" because the stimulus created jobs, but no letters to maintain UAW jobs in Wisconsin. Inept is a complement to Ryan.
