Hurricane Sandy could cost Obama 300,000 votes

President Obama stands to lose as many as 340,000 votes as a result of Hurricane Sandy, not enough to affect the outcome in heavily Democratic Northeastern states, but something that could make a difference in the popular vote if the results of Tuesday’s presidential race are as close as polls indicate, a First Read analysis finds.

“Sandy has the potential to reduce Obama's national popular vote share by depressing turnout in highly Democratic areas along the Eastern Seaboard,” Dr. Michael McDonald of George Mason University, who studies turnout, told First Read. “The storm is unlikely to change the Electoral College outcome, as Obama is heavily favored to win the affected states. A turnout drop could be the difference in a close national election, and thus could shape the political discourse over important policy issues in a possible Obama second term.”

For example, assuming 2008 vote totals and a 15 percent reduction in turnout in the coastal counties most affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, Obama would lose a net of 340,000 votes, including 247,000 out of New York, 60,000 from New Jersey, 29,000 from Connecticut, and 3,600 from Rhode Island.

Officials in states hit by Hurricane Sandy are now deciding how to hold an election next Tuesday in communities where residents have been displaced and there's still no power. NBC's Tom Curry discusses.

Officially, four times in American history has a candidate become president while losing the popular vote --  John Quincy Adams in 1824, Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876, Benjamin Harrison in 1888, and George W. Bush in 2000. (Some political scientists believe it’s actually five, and that John F. Kennedy lost the popular vote in 1960.) Most recently, the country was divided in 2000 when Al Gore won the popular vote by 540,000, but lost the Electoral College narrowly because of 537 votes in Florida.

It would be even more accurate to dive into individual precincts, but here’s a rough a county-by-county breakdown:

New York: GRAND TOTAL: Obama -247,000

Thoughts and prayers to the people hit by Hurricane Sandy. I'm sure voting is the last thing on their minds as they try to stay warm, get food and gas and rebuild their lives. I will be very impressed by those who are able to vote in the midst of such chaos.

I've generally admired how the politicians have handled the storm & its aftermath but I think it is wrong to hold the NYC Marathon on Sunday. Also think it is wrong to have the Giants v. my Steelers game go on. It could have been moved to a neutral site or here to Pittsburgh. They could have sold tickets for Hurricane Relief and done some real good.

Steeler Fan, well said. It seems a bad decision to hold the marathon this weekend when it could have easily been postponed. To pull emergency resources, police, medical etc as well as clean up effort resources needed on Staten Island and elsewhere for a foot race doesn't make sense. Same with the football game, move the site.

The game is a business. Other businesses are opening, why should the owners of NFL teams be any different. The Marathon is a huge event and not easily postponed, and it brings alot of much needed revenue to the city.

Just a thought. After 9-11-01, many wanted to cancel sporting events, but they went on anyway with increased security. After a devastating event such as the recent hurricane, it can lift people's spirit somewhat with a return to normalcy.

Hopefully, this marathon will not drain needed resources from aid to the victims of this terrible event. Many merchants are suffering large declines in sales due to hurricane and its aftermath in New York City and surrounding areas. These businesses do need to survive to help the local economy there to stay strong. People who have lost their homes don't need to lose their jobs too.

Shaak: actually, most sporting event were called off a week or longer. I was in college and our collegiate soccer schedule was gutted a week. BAseball didnt play for some time either if im not mistaken.

From a participant in the recent storm lucky enough to have power after 48 hours without, this is a bad ove for NYC. Many are out of power, out of necessities and out in the cold. A marathon that could be postponed should not be the City's priority.

I wondered how long it would take before someone would equate climate change to Hurrican Sandy.Where's your proof on this Honey Boo Boo II?

      Here's your proof.

Since 1800, the beginning of the Industrial age, the population of the world has increased from 1 Billion to over 7 Billion today.

The industrial age has seen the birth and development of the combustible engine, for ships, cars, trucks, trains, planes, you name it.

People have covered the earth with houses, buildings, roads, parking lots, you name it.

Look at a map of the world taken at night. You can see where the majority of the world's population lives; mostly on coastlines, and those coastlines have ocean and wind currents that take the heat from our cities and moves it to the polar ice caps.

Mankind has built and covered up the ground which 100 years ago was mostly agriculture and vegetation.

The Architecture and Engineering professions have already begun to change the way we build.

These professions, along with manufacturers of building products, are leading the way RIGHT NOW with recycled products, re-used products, and energy efficient products to help run our homes and buildings more efficiently, and cutting down on greenhouse emissions and 'heat sinks' and making our planet cooler.

We are just BEGINNING to do this.

We have a LONG way to go.

This current century and the next century, my profession, Architecture, and my fellow engineers, will be leading the way to help curb the effects of the last century's growth.

Until then, you cannot deny that we as a planet have been heating up the earth.

In the 1970s, the scare was a new ice age because of all the stuff we put in the air. So we stopped.... now you claim we're going to bake.... why not just put more stuff back in the air? Production goes up, jobs increase, climate cools.... everyone is happy............

      ... address Climate Change...

Climate Change - the new term for global warming since it has been debunked so many times.

The planet has been undergoing warming since the last ice age. Once the pendulum starts the other way people will start bitching about the return of the ice age. But the term Climate Change would still be appropriate.

Try to convince those people in West Virginia that are shoveling 24-30 inches of global warming that they should be concerned.

Debunked by who? Scientists like Sarah Palin? When you get a chance, I suggest you look up climate. When done, look up weather. You will find they are not synonymous, but nice try. Incidentally, since you are obviously a meteorologist, you probably understand that climate change is more appropriate, right? The warming of the planet can include areas that will actually get colder, at least temporarily; the term "climate change" fits better because some low-information folks cannot understand the actual global impacts. Not to infer that you might be one of those folks...

The weather does not discriminate, she's 1/2 right. Even though I hate to say it...every time a hurricane hits, hard, it nails people that live where, honestly, you really shouldn't live.

Katrina- NOLA sits like 35 ft below sea level and they were so appauled by the flooding.

Sandy- So many homes destroyed because they sit right on the frickin' ocean!

I live in Northern NV...NO ONE here builds homes or anything for that matter in an avalanche slide zone or our homes would be wiped off the face of the mountain. NO ONE here either builds on a GD geo-thermal vent...ie active volcano vents.

I do not feel sorry for these people. We are only humans, animals, mammals. We are children of the Earth and the Earth is alive...you have to think and take care yourself.

Being RIGHT-WING dumb and denying climate change has noting to do with the right-wing leaders programing their weak minded folks, it's about the moola! Noting more and nothing less. It's like I work at a coal plant and make my money (so CC is bad and must be fake) I work in the oil industry and make lots of money (so CCis really bad and it is fake as far as I'm concerned) When the right-wang points fingers and says them Climate Change people just want to make money on this, you know you are actually taking money away from the right-wangs portfolios.

Whether or not you believe climate change is real, we all live on this planet. It is our home. What is wrong with wanting our home to be the best it can be? Do you really think oil is infinite? The conditions that created oil no longer exist .. so what is there is it. Why not be energy-efficient in our homes, our buildings, our transportation? Why can't we all agree that we want our home to be clean, efficient and capable of sustaining us for a long time to come?

Im all about reducing my carbn footprint, but we are basing "global warming" on 200 years of measures after coming out of an ice age.

Facts are, nature is indiscriminate. MOre humans are in hams way today then they ever have been. But the egocenterist idea that in 100 years we could so drastically alter the whole planet is bordering on the extreme end.

Then again, most of you want to save the planet without giving up cars and electricity. Or planting trees close to houses and cars because raking leaves is a pain. So it is what it is.

I would hope that if these folks don't get to vote the polititians on both sides would realize that these are still American citizens and their needs should be counted - not discarded because they could not make it to the voting poll due to this disaster - this is much different than any other election due to the disaster so close to election day. On another note - leaders in those states need to do whatever it takes to make sure those voters get to vote.

The GOP has been trying to suppress the Demo vote all across this country, with voter I.D, "True the Vote" my a## The GOP found something like 34 cases of voter fraud in their extensive investigations. We haven't shown I.D in CA. ever, yet we have never had a problem with voter fraud .It has been extremely evident that voter I.D is an attempt to keep potential Demo voters home. I know your going to say I'm nuts ,but there have been numerous articles and news discussions about this. It has been tried before the Supreme Court, and stopped in some states. So please, this "Truth in Voting" or whatever you call it is nothing more than suppressing voters.

Proof he knew what was up in Benghazi and reported by another news source NBC news
On the very day U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the U.S. Consulate attack on Libya in September, someone on the U.S. team in Benghazi apparently spotted a suspicious member of the local police force photographing the inside of the U.S. mission.

Reporters from ForeignPolicy.com say they found a draft letter expressing concern among documents left on site more than six weeks after the attack, and nearly a month after the FBI was there collecting evidence.

One of the documents found after the Sept. 11 U.S. Consulate attack in Benghazi, Libya that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead. / FOREIGNPOLICY.COM
Notations indicate the letter was intended for the head of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Benghazi.

"... early this morning at 0643, September 11, 2012, one of our diligent guards made a troubling report. Near our main gate, a member of the police force was seen in the upper level of a building across from our compound. It is reported that this person was photographing the inside of the U.S. special mission and furthermore that this person was part of the police unit sent to protect the mission."

It goes on to ask for an investigation. It's unclear whether the letter was sent and what action may have been taken, but it reflects the continued security concerns of U.S. diplomats in Benghazi in the weeks and days leading up to the assault.

Another draft letter dated two days before the attack complains that requested police support for Ambassador Stevens' visit had not been supplied.

"...We requested daily, twenty-four hour police protection at the front and rear of the U.S. mission as well as a roving patrol. In addition we requested the services of a police explosive detection dog. We were given assurances from the highest authorities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that all due support would be provided for Ambassador Stevens' visit to Benghazi. However, we are saddened to report that we have only received an occasional police presence at our main gate. Many hours pass when we have no police support at all."

As special security teams for Libya were reduced in them months before the attack, the U.S. diplomats increasingly relied on the local Libyan security and the police force for protection. Yeah, Ster2, I heard that they found a document that indicated Romney was directly involved in getting blueprints of the layout of the facility and supplying them to the radicals. The paper included wording that stated this all could then be ascribed to Obama, thereby winning Romney the presidency, a la Reagan and the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Ryan apparently said that they should make sure the attack was on 9/11, as that would provide more impact; he said Grandpa Munster told him so.

It would have been difficult to act considering even if a letter written on the day of the attack had been sent it wouldn't likely have had time for any investigation. Them reporting Libya wasn't supplying sufficient police 2 days earlier would hardly leave time for any serious action. They note that requested police wasn't being supplied but didn't ask for additional U.S. forces. It's called a report. There isn't anything revealing in anything you posted. Kind of stupid to blame Obama for not acting on a request made to Libyan officials.

I wonder what affect this will have on down ballot races? Is CT like CA in which the Democrats are concentrated in the coastal areas and the Republicans inland? If so, could this impact the senate race there?

We here in the City will be cheering on the runners...it is well and proper that life should go on.

The incumbent unquestionably gained far more politically than he potentially lost from the storm, and the full effects of that gain won't be reflected in the polls until Monday...

Giant Steelers game will undoubtedly contain some type of text donation to the Red Cross etc. on TV coverage, but again, the best way to honor those lost in the storm is to get back to normal as soon as possible...

1888 election was won by Benjamin Harrison, not William Henry Harrison. Benjamin Was William Henry's grandson. William Henry Harrison won 1840 election defeating Martin Van Buren and died one month after becoming President.

                      Mitt Romney founded, CEO

Bain Capital private equity firm , is under investigation for questionable tax practices, Since June 24, 2009 to November 01, 2012, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has been issuing subpoenas to private equity firms including Bain, which he believes intentionally changed management fees into capital gains as a way of hanging onto millions of dollars that would have otherwise been taxed at a higher rate. Bain alone is estimated to have saved “more than $800 million in federal income taxes and more than $200 million in Medicare taxes.” It is unclear the tax strategy was used while Romney was at the helm of the company, but the Times reports that Romney is still making money on funds that are using the method in question. A lawyer who handles Romney’s money says he “can confirm that neither he nor the trust has ever done this, whether before or after he retired from Bain Capital.” Still, little is known about Romney’s finances, except that he makes a windfall on capital gains each year, since Romney has flat-out refused to release his tax returns. Mitt Romney is under investigation of murky world of offshore finance and under mining American businesses in 43 states. Just how much of Romney’s fortune of millions in Bain Capital funds from Romney has under mined America’s industrial and commercial Industry. The industrial and commercial industry is the production of an economic good or service within America’s economy and the America’s work force.

does anybody realize that electric cars have to be plugged in to charge? Does anybody further realize that electricity isnt some strange magic, but generated by al of the fuels that clean energy looks to outlaw?

Electric cars do litle more than raise your electric bill and put a meteor sized hole in your pocket when it needs to be fixed. You want change, get a biofuel car and start hitting up the local KFC for their used oil.

Steve, a few things to enlighten you, if that is at all possible...

                                Romney is not leading Obama.

It's a close race, if it actually is, because there are low-information voters that only understand talking points from the right, regardless of facts. They believe things like lies about moving Jeep production to China, in spite of the truth. And that's just one of the lies.

Obama has plenty of accomplishments, which I am sure you are aware of, and they have been stated. Pretending otherwise is either ignorance or delusion.

Hyperbole is bliss for some, I guess, as is ignorance. Yeah, Romney is just terrific - that is why he is so far behind in the state he lies about leading.

If it wasn't for Sandy he would have won.

If it wasn't for his horrible debate performances he would have won.

If it wasn't for Joe Biden's debate lies and acknowledgement of the middle class being buried by Obama, he would have won.

Since the calculus of this and every presidential election is based on the Electoral College and not the popular vote, the number of votes lost to these heavily Democratic states mean next to nothing. Just adds a footnote to the history books.

"Non-Union Utility Crews from Alabama Turned Away From Helping NJ Sandy Victims"

                                      http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Non-Union-Utility-Crews-from-Alabama-Turned-Away-From-Helping-NJ-Sandy-Victims-176949061.html

"But what I can promise you is that the federal government will be working as closely as possible with the state and local officials, and we will not quit until this is done. And the directive that I have given -- and I said this yesterday, but I will repeat; and I think Craig and others who are working with me right now know I mean it -- we are not going to tolerate red tape. We're not going to tolerate bureaucracy. And I've instituted a 15-minute rule, essentially, on my team: You return everybody's phone calls in 15 minutes, whether it's the mayors’, the governors’, county officials’. If they need something, we figure out a way to say yes." -- Barack Obama

Unfortunately, in Mr. Obama's world, Union membership trumps everything.

Very True - Democrat Union policies are more important tha getting charitble help from other Americans to rebuild the elictrical grid. Sad....

Did either of you read the entire story? In order to save you the anguish and struggle to acquire complete comprehension, please allow me to highlight the salient points:

Several utility crews from Alabama who arrived in New Jersey to help restore power following Hurricane Sandy were allegedly told to leave because they are not union workers, according to a Huntsville news station.

                                      And:

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s office is denying the report saying it is "likely confusion about needing the crew at that particular location" and had "nothing to do with being union or non-union workers."

A representative for the two utility companies also said the story is untrue, according to the Huntsville Times.

A television station alleges that it happened, but the utility company - and Governor Christie's office - say that the story is not true.

Well, if the TV station reported it, it has to be true, right?

And how can you believe what the the governor's office might say? After all, he is such a strong supporter of the liberal unions.

                                      <sarcasm off>

The story originated out of FOX BUSINESS.COM video news. The home office from Huntsville was presented with paperwork requiring union affiliation which Huntsville decided was unacceptable.
According to the company spokesman, the crews sat at a staging location in Virginia all day on Thursday, the decision was made to call the crews back to Huntsville. They are expected to arrive home later Friday.

Don't shoot me, that is what I got from the video......WHATEVER happened, it is sad they went home. I think this is EXACTLY what Mr. Obama was referring to when he said he didn't want to hear about "red tape".......

If some Union official is responsible for this, let him join the unemployment line...but I don't think you get it when you get fired for cause.

At this point, I'm predicting that Obama wins the election with at least 277 electoral votes and loses the popular vote, thanks to Hurricane Sandy. Then Republicans will howl and demand an end to the electoral college, and they'll nominate a hurricane to be their mascot.. or maybe their next presidential candidate.

Anyway, 50 points? Sure you want to make that bet? Next time you are talking to your buddy Obama (I assume he is your buddy, since you continually use a nickname when addressing him...after all, if you aren't his buddy, that would be chidlish, not to mention disrespectful), ask him if he thinks he will actually lose, and, if so, by that much.

The article states that President Obama may lose 300,000 votes due to Sandy. Again, I guess, there were no Republicans in the path of Sandy, that might cost the Republicans votes. Just like there are no Republicans on food stamps, welfare, unemployment, lost their homes, etc.

                                      Unreal.

The analysis is wrong for New York. The areas most affected are Republican areas. Most people can't believe that there are overwhelmingly Republican areas in NYC, but South Brooklyn, most of the Rockaway Peninsula, and South Staten Island are.

That is the least of Obama's problems, he'll lose in a blowout because of his failed policies. Get out and talk to people, instead of looking at state run polls, he's toast.

The margin would depend on how many dead, illegal or double voters he can get in,with his Acorn and Black Panthers buddies. . .

We in Obama land are very optimistic about the next four years with our soon to be re-elect President

Obama. Let's face it everybody, we all need to pull together and make our country strong again.

Look at the last week with our national disaster, isn't our President a natural born leader, and look at

the Mayor of New York and the Governor of New Jersey. In an emergency, is it really time to bring

animosity with each other. I hope if my expectation comes true, that the Republican Party will work with

President Obama instead of always fighting against him.

I really do not think our country will survive without this.

To Pissed in Ohio, your comments are really biased. I had a nurse coworker just come back from Ohio

and as long as I am concerned, Ohio residents are pissed that Romney is spending all of his current

donations to his campaign instead of helping the Hurricance victims throughout all the states. I expect

a lot from Romney in his examples instead of his talk.

                                      OK., vote Tuesday.

If Obama is reelected, which would cause at least half of America to puke, then the Republicans will work with Obama only where absolutely necessary to save this country.

Unfortunately, due to his policies, it will appear to democrats that Republicans are blocking him in the House. If anything, expect a more polarized Senate. Obama and Harry Reid's demonizing of Republicans and their candidate won't set well with either the Republican house or the almost Republican Senate.

Obama needs to learn to compromise. I'm not sure that can happen.

The only reason you hate Obama is because he's dark. If Republicans wanted to save the country Bush should have never gotten 2 terms to make this disaster. You idiot should have elected Gore when Clinton left office but you had to screw it up and make it worse so i blame you bunch of Taliban like Republican party members even a blind man can see you guys aren't any difference.. you are a bunch of terrorist destroying America... NOT Obama.. you bunch of TEA PARTY.. not the real republican party members... you and John Mccain sadden me.....

Yeah, sure - too bad so many of your Republican leaders are on record stating that their only concern with Obama is making sure he was a one-term president. Nope, not a word about compromise. Those darned facts keep getting in the way, huh, righties? Republicans demonize themselves, they need no help.

common- Obama and Harry Reid's demonizing of Republicans and their candidate won't set well with either the Republican house or the almost Republican Senate.

They demonized themselves when they committed treason to their country.Signing a pledge to serve one man,Grover Norquist, above the interests of the nation,is indefensible.Everyone of the signers need to be targeted for defeat, and Norquist indicted by the DOJ in a RICCO case. These traitors need to be taught the American people won't put up with their harming our nation any longer.

I love how Norquist stood up there yesterday, on the Ed Show, and admitted flat out that all the tbaggers want is a puppet president to sign the bills they write. He doesnt have to think, he doesnt need to give them any input or give his opinion on what the congress wants to pass or any of the regulating. All he has to do is sit up there and let them rape the country while he just sits up there and does what they want. I say "scr*w you Grover"..this is our country. You tipped your hand bonehead. You dont actually think the people will just sit there and let you continue Bush's policies without us reacting do you? Just because Romney choses to be a sell out and a traitor like you doesnt mean you will get away with it. We know your game and will be watching you! Funny I dont remember seeing your name on any ballot...what makes you think Romney would let you call the shots?? oh wait..you've been doing it all along. Your a traitor and need to be thrown in jail.

Your willing to destroy our country for financial gain...all enemies foreign and domestic..hmm I think you fit in that bracket.

Elaine...It's known as the "sleeper" syndrome for which Republicans are most adept. Think about it. They've had a sleeper in the White House since Reagan. They knew Reagan's medical record before he ever became president and it was calculated he'd be a "sleeper" they could easily control. Fast forward to Bush '41...another sleeper who did the bidding of his Big Business cronies so Republicans would control the House and Senate. Overturned by their worst nightmare: William Jefferson Clinton, a guy who came from humble beginnings to win what would have been Bush 41's second term and financial windfall for Big Business.

So they put another super sleeper in the White House even though history now shows to what lengths the GOP stooped to win in 2000 and 2004. Bush '43 was the super sleeper that allowed Norquist to commandeer the entire country. Norquist couldn't win a GOP presidency unless he bought and paid for it himself. It's time to take Norquist down by divulging some of the skankology of his past. Dig deep and you find this guy has more evil cancers than we all believed Cheney had.

Once Bush '43 got the country on the GOP course, they got a taste of that omnipotent control of all of us and our lives...now, they want to put the country right back on the course their regime set in 2000.

The reality is that Ryan is nothing more than a Roy Cohn-type attack dog who will devour anyone who stands in the Norquist or Koch paths. Romney is nothing more than a sleeper for those in the GOP who believe government is a for profit business and nothing more. Once you face the reality of just how much of your government the right wing rich butts want to turn into a profit making vulture venture capitalist project of their own making, you see that those paid to bash this president are doing the bidding of some of the evilest men in US history who would sooner slay their own mothers than see their regime of power end.

On Tuesday, Let's all come together and give Obama the chance to learn a Real Life Lesson.

Let's show him what it's like to lose HIS job due to a FAILED Economics Plan, just like Millions of Americans have over the past 4 years.
