Romney pledges regular meetings with Democrats in pitch for bipartisanship

DOSWELL, VA -- Once again throttling back on his most vociferous attacks on President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney continued his effort to paint the president as a partisan without a plan, and pledged to work across the aisle with Democrats if elected president in his second event of a three-stop Virginia campaign day.

Charles Dharapak / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney greets supporters at a campaign stop at Meadow Event Park, in Richmond, Va., Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012.

"I'm going to meet regularly with Democrat leaders and Republican leaders. I won't do that once a year, when I say regularly I mean much more frequently than that, because we're going to have to work together," Romney pledged. "These are critical times. This is an election of consequence."

Democrats immediately seized on the irony of Romney delivering these remarks while standing next to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., whom Democrats have long accused of using his power in the House to act as one of the "chief architects" of GOP obstruction to President Obama's agenda.

“For the sole purpose of political gain, congressman Cantor and Republicans in Congress, like Romney’s running mate congressman Ryan, have blocked efforts to achieve a balanced deficit reduction deal and to pass legislation to create jobs now," read a statement from Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith. "The American people need someone who will move us forward, not just serve as a rubber stamp for the right wing.”

Romney, who has dialed down his criticisms of President Obama in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and as the campaigns move into the closing argument phase, continued to ding the president for what he said was a lack of an agenda and a campaign based upon attacks alone.

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney hits the campaign trail in Roanoke, Virginia criticizing President Obama's economic and energy policies.

"For a while there he was talking about saving characters on Sesame Street, and then it was word games with my name that he was playing, and then of course he got very anxious and went out there and just attacked me day in and day out," Romney said. "Attacking me does not create an agenda for him."

Romney makes one more appearance in Virginia today: a rally in Virginia Beach that was originally planned for Sunday night, but had to be rescheduled due to the approach of Hurricane Sandy.

It used to be that Republicans and Democrats disagreed about the direction of the country now the Republicans can't even agree on facts.

Romney and the Republican party needs to be afraid of people like me.

I have never voted a straight ticket for either party. I have always voted 'for' the candidate I felt was best for the issues of the times. And, in all my years, I have never seen all Dems or all Repubs as a viable answer.

So, for the first time in my life - I will be using my right....to vote AGAINST any and all Republican candidates. They have completely abandoned the concepts of representation of the people in their districts - only to embrace and pledge allegiance to party conquest. They have actively used social issues and hidden behind religion to conceal agendas that are not in alignment with the needs of the majority of their constituents. They have grotesquely pursued legislation that benefited the extremely wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

Don't take this to mean I will be voting a Democrat ticket. It only means I will vote for any other candidate for the sole purpose of voting against Republicans.

They need to clean up their act of get out of town.

Romney Economics:

It didn't work in Massachusetts, and it won't work now.

Mitt Romney ran for governor of Massachusetts promising more jobs, less debt, and smaller government. Here's what Massachusetts got instead:

Romney Economics didn't work then, and won't work now, that's why he was a one-term-governor and Obama will carry Massachusetts.

Eliminated a $1.5 billion deficit, got something done. Keep unemployment under 5%, got something done. Turned olympics around, got something done. Obama - I'll cut the deficit in half during my first term, failed. Pass my stimulus plan or unemployment will go over 8%, stimulus passed and failed on unemployment. Romney successful, Obama unsuccessful.

CKSM, you seem to have a funny view of the facts.

You applaud Romney for simply maintaining the unemployment rate during boom times but villify Obama for actually lowering it during an enormous recession??

That's some real GOP logic there.

Eliminated a $1.5 billion deficit

Toal BS, he sold long term bonds to pay off short term debt.

No reduction at all.

Turned olympics around

Uhhh, with federal money, you know a "stimulus".

"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised." —Mitt Romney, speaking about his Michigan roots during a rally in Commerce, Michigan, Aug. 24, 2012

How about those tax returns Mitt?

    Reply#434 - Fri Nov 2, 2012 7:33 AM EDT

Really how does that work, you leave your country to escape prosecuton but retain citizenship? That sounds fishy to me, then you send your kid back to run for govener and your granson for president. I think we should be looking into Mitt's legal status. He played the same game in Massachusets.

In June 2002 Romney got caught lying on and about his Federal and State 1999-2001 for months Romney and his campaigned had been telling the people of Massachusetts to "trust me" regarding Romney's Tax Returns only to find out in June 2002 that Romney had not only lied to the people of Massachusetts for months on end, but actually had lied on his 1999-2001 Federal and State Tax Returns so he had to Amend them retroactively.

    ALSO

Mitt Romney voted for Scott Brown in the special Massachusetts election to fill the seat of the late Ted Kennedy (D-MA). He listed his residence as the unfinished basement of his son's home in Belmont, MA.

Whether the elder Romneys were legal residents of Massachusetts at the time is unknown. If he released his Massachusetts taxes for the same year he released his federal taxes, we would know.

We do know that he also had a home in New Hampshire. Why might he want to live in New Hampshire? Because New Hampshire has no capital gains or income taxes. So, the Mittster parked some of his money in the Cayman Islands where George W is speaking to "investors" today, some in Switzerland, and parked himself in New Hampshire, all to avoid taxes.

Nonetheless, Mitt allegedly voted in the Scott Brown election. Ann probably did too. To release his 2010 Masschusetts tax returns would settle the question about whether he committed voter fraud.

And, we all know how deeply concerned Republicans are about voter fraud, don't we?

How is an individual who has been only a Senator and now a President on government salary worth millions and millions of dollars? His combined salaries before taxes on those jobs only equates to about 2.5 million in earning over the last 8 years.

Was is all in his book sales? LOL!! Obama is part of the 1%, he has investments in many of the same businesses Romney does. He is even associated with Bain Capital (It's hard NOT to these days). The hypocrisy of his words are epic!!

Now, just admit it. This is more about YOU and the agenda you want to see and feel than it is about improving America, isnt it? That's the extreme liberal way. Just tell me Im right...haha, see, I told you so. I win, I win. Nana, nana boo, boo.

But, you never think about the long term implications. All of this Obama agenda and political mentality has been tried before in many, many civilizations and countries. Do you think this is "modern" thinking? Get real. It has failed time and time again throughout history.

Abolish, Bill Clintons 'Work for welfare ' program and the Bush tax cuts. Both these boondoggles have been in play for Democrats and Republicans . Oh don't get me wrong there great bi partisan programs; Especially if your an illegal immigrant with three kids driving a taxi, roofing houses, or in housekeeping. Even better programs if your the owner of the taxi cab , the roofing , or housekeeping companies. Bill Clinton created 22 million jobs and at the same time displaced 22 million U.S. citizens out of jobs. The twenty two million U.S.. citizens out of work, singles living at home , married without children, and empty nesters, who are now public troughtors - all would like to start making money and paying taxes so they can afford Obamacare. Put the hustle back into the economy! Get the kids out the house by thirty! Save our empty nester social security! Put our young back into the starter jobs! How! Repeal Clintons 'work for welfare' , the Bush tax cuts, and Obamacare !

I predict Romney will succumb to Early Alzheimers just like Reagan did. When one tells so many lies, it becomes very difficult to discern reality from lies or carefully constructed fabrications. When Romney tries convincing people that Lies are Reality, there will come a time when he will no longer be able to know weather his own lies are the truth, no matter how hard he tries to convince himself that what he is saying is the truth.

The answer is NO and that is why Obama should not be re-elected. The only way he will be able to govern is by finding ways to violate the Constitution and avoid Congress. The country will not stand for that nor can it withstand that.

CBS News has learned that during the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi, the Obama Administration did not convene its top interagency counterterrorism resource: the Counterterrorism Security Group, (CSG).

In the days after the assault, counterterrorism officials expressed dismay over what they interpreted as the Obama Administration's unwillingness to acknowledge that the attack was terrorism; and their opinion that resources which could have helped were excluded.

Counterterrorism officials from two agencies said they concluded almost immediately that the attack was by terrorists and was not spontaneous. "I came to this conclusion as soon as I heard the mortar rounds were impacting on top of the building our people were occupying," says one. "The position of the mortar must be plotted on a map, the target would have to be plotted, computations would be calculated that would result in the proper mortar tube elevation and the correct number of powder bags to be attached to the rounds."

A White House official says President Obama immediately acknowledged the assault was a terrorist attack. However, there was confusion as White House spokesman Jay Carney said three days later, "We have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack."

On Sept.16, US Ambassador Susan Rice told CBS' "Face the Nation" and other talk shows that the assault appeared to have grown from a spontaneous protest over an anti-Islam video.

CBS' Bob Schieffer asked Rice whether she thought "that this was something that had been plotted out several months ago?"Rice answered, "We do not have information at present that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated or preplanned."

In an interview last week, President Obama said "the minute" he became aware of the Benghazi attack, he directed his staff to "make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to do."

I voted for Obama in 2008. I spent 12 years active duty military from 1995-2008. Eight of those years were under G.W. Bush. I certainly was not up for a McCain/Palin ticket given that McCain's agenda would not have differed on the warfront anymore than Bush and change was needed. Furthermore, Palin was friggin clueless on anything political except bears, guns and "Joe Six Pack". It was a poor Republican attempt to sway female voters (and many of them bit).

With that said, Obama has done a horrible job. He represents "groups" of people...not ALL the people. His comments, his loyalty and his actions do NOT dictate an American looking to preserve American values. I dont care what anyone says, you cannot "spread the wealth" in ANY society to the extent he wants to and expect it to last. Capitalism has created a big mess, but it has also created the American dream and kept America at the top. Obama also has NO idea what it's like to be poor, struggling or even black. He never lived any of those lives to the extent that the average person has. He has been a sideline witness with an opinion and nothing more.

I dont regret my vote for Obama cause McCain wasnt even an option. But, I wish he had done even a small portion of what he said he would do...and he hasnt. He has been a complete failure and he needs to go.

Through all of this campaign, it has become clearly obvious that people vote not because of what will better the country, but better their personal needs and whatever will make them "feel" better. That is not how you vote.

Well, it's amazing that Im a 12 year active duty combat veteran with documented service connected disabilities for OIF/OEF and Kosovo and the VA hasnt made any progress on my claim in 3 years. Thanks WACO, TX VA Regional Office!!

Furthermore, your VA preference only gets you in the door on federal jobs. Once in, your VA preference does nothing for Merit Promotions unless you are 30% or more disabled. But, you know what does? Affirmative Action for minorities, females and now gays and lesbians who may, and in many cases do, have less education, experience and federal service than you do.

See, it's all smoke and mirrors. You can bring up all the links and articles you want. Go ask veterans and see what they have to say.

The only thing Im using is my Post 9-11 GI Bill and it has served me well and it WAS NOT Obama's idea or dream for that program. Stop pandering!!

Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have provided a billion dollars towards helping veterans find work. The reason? They cited the fact that the bill did not adhere to spending limits Congress had set in place last year. Democrats needed 60 votes to overturn this argument, according to the Associated Press, but were only able to get 58, losing the resolution by 2 votes.

With current unemployment rates at nearly 11 percent among veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many say that it is time Washington step up to do more. HuffPost Live's Alicia Menendez discusses this issue asking why certain senators decided to block this bill.

"It shouldn't be surprising that Washington can't get anything done..." Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) told HuffPost Live. "When it came down to it, this critical jobs bill would have provided much needed support for not just the 10.9 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are unemployed, but really all veterans. The bottom line here is this bill died..."

Apparently the bill didn't even come up for vote. According to Tom Tarantino, chief policy officer at IAVA said senators used an "obscure budget rule" to block the vote and table the resolution without even being able to vote on the bill itself.

I think there are many ways to serve and I believe Obama honors the sacrifices of our troops and their families. Romney rarely mentions veterans and I do not believe he will support us.

They have systematically removed or frustrated every moderate Republican who has even suggested reaching across the aisle. This is another blatant Romney lie. If elected he will soon be surrounded by right wing extremist who will push for legislation consistent with their program. You can expect them to spend the first two years IGNORING the economy while they attempt to over turn Roe V. Wade and ACA. Its really sad to see the above posts on taxes and how people perceive how Obama has been treated by the Republicans. Obama has no one to blame but himself. Remember his pledge to listen to ALL ideas and how his administration was going to have complete transparency. Instead, he let Pelosi and Reed do whatever they wanted on the stimulus and write the healthcare bill behind closed doors. So much for his pledge. Thank goodness America corrected those injustices with the midterm elections and restored control of the House to the Republicans. Then Obama ignored the recommendations of the bipartisan Simpson Bowles commission. Now who is the obstructionist?

Obama went on TV with the Republicans and Democrats for hours explaining the health care proposal and seeking compromse. Although the program was originally proposed by conservative Heritage Foundation and implemented by Romney in Massachusetts, the Republican just continued to attack and refuse compromise instead of helping to address one America's greatest problems.

Chris, republican leaders immediately began questioning Obama's nationality, religion and patriotism. GOP leaders are on record explicitly stating their #1 priority was not the well being of the nation but to make Obama a one-term president.

It is obvious that they had absolutely no appetite to work with him. Zero, even to the detriment of the national good.

We have heard the “Obama as radical partisan” canard from Republican critics since the first day of Obama’s first term, and the fog of history and rhetoric makes it difficult to objectively assess Obama’s record on bipartisanship. Republican dogma says that Obama was the uber-partisan, pushed his agenda from day 1, and that Republicans waited in vain for Obama to work with them on bipartisan solutions. In response, Obama supporters point to numerous attempts at bipartisanship and argue that Republican obstructionism is to blame for a failure to collaborate. The result of this debate is a foggy, backward-looking blame game that provides no tangible view of how this history unfolded and which side of this argument is the right.

In trying to make the case that Obama tried, hard, to reach across the aisle, I thought it useful to examine the last few years not from the perspective of hindsight, but from the perspective of media coverage of the events of Obama’s first term as they were happening. This “time machine” perspective presents a chronological play-by-play of the history of Obama’s attempts at bipartisanship that is uniquely illustrative.

But first, I want to share a November 2008 piece written by conservative political scientist and writer Peter Berkowitz in the Weekly Standard just days after Obama’s historic win. In that article, entitled “Supposing Obama Were a Bipartisan“, Berkowitz lays out seven measures that Obama could back if he is serious about truly governing as a centrist.

Of these 7 measures, two became obsolete (the first having to do with Republican paranoia about the Fairness Doctrine and the second regarding campus speech codes at public universities), and of the remaining 5 Obama backed at least 4:

                                  • Obama resisted calls for Congressional Democrats to pursue criminal investigations of the Bush Administration.
                                  • Obama reappointed Robert Gates as Secratary of Defense.
                                  • Obama appointed a “judges judge”, Sonia Sotomayor, as his first appointment to the Supreme Court, a judge that Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called “generally in the mainstream….not an activist".
                                  • Obama endorsed charter schools.

”Besides naming Republicans to cabinet posts, Obama elevated three recently retired four-star military officers to top government positions, an unparalleled representation of the military brass in a Democratic administration. He has appointed Gen. James Jones, retired Marine commandant, as his national security adviser; Gen. Eric Shinseki, retired Army chief of staff, as secretary for veterans affairs; and retired Admiral Dennis Blair as director of national intelligence.”

Very funny, Romney after all the foolish attacks and lies on the Navy, on the budget (claiming Obama's budget proposal is sequestration that both parities will prevent), on the Chrysler shifting of jobs from the US, on GM.

Romney did shift his foreign policy to Obama's position on the timing of an attack on Iran and on withdrawal from Afghanistan and also reversed his position on FEMA. But compromise with the Democrats - he would have to raise the 15 percent capital gains income tax on the rich - which he has refused to do. That is essential for a compromise on the debt 2.5 dollars of cuts in spending for every dollar of tax increase on the rich - continued as an offer by Obama that would reallly address the debt.

One on Romney's budget experts last Friday on CNN admitted that with the tax cuts for the rich and two trillion of extra military spending that the military didn't request, Romney would keep adding to the debt for 7 years, hoping to balance his proposed budget only in the eighth year of his reign.

But if the Democrats need someone to buy a crate of tuna fish, pretend it was donated and put it on a truck, Romney is their man.

Tompon...I see...its OK for Obama to say his positions on issues are evolving (like Gay Marriage) but its not OK for Romney. Kind of a double standard. I can see you failed math. Its a fact that you could take every drop of income from the top 5% wage earners in America and it would run the Federal Government for 92 days. Taxing the rich isn't the answer for deficit reduction. We spend $1 trillion dollars annually on welfare. We should start there. Then go after worthless government programs and agencies. I will gladly give up more of my income to the Government if I thought they would spend it efficiently. Instead I see my money go to robotic squirrels, welfare recipients who got their work requirement waived, or failed green energy companies sponsored by Obama political donors. You don't fool anybody with your rhetoric. Go post elsewhere.

Excuse me Chris Rhodes scholar- it's not that Romney has changed his view on things a couple of times, everybody does that, it's that he's changed his view on everything numerous times. The man has no moral compass. He is willing to say ANYTHING to get elected, ANYTHING. He was pro-choice before he wasn't. He was anti-gun before he wasn't. The man is a political chameleon, none of us know his true position on anything. The penultimate "pig in a poke"

I am sure if Romney would win...He would not say to the other side ..." There are consequences for Losing an Election" or " You can come along for the ride ...but you have to sit in the back seat"... Or Ram Health care down the throats of Congress and not leading Congress to a bi-partisan decision on such a big issue...that caused his problems with his relationship with the other side of the aisle... Right or wrong.

That caused a lot of decisiveness between the parties.... You can agree or disagree...but that caused a lot of his problems and will still be a problem for if he is elected again.

Why is is that Obama is running 30 points ahead of Romney in Massachusetts????? His own state doesnt even want him as President!!!!!!!!! That should tell America something! Wake up people! He is a liar and he cannot be trusted with anything that comes out of his mouth. THis elections should not even be close. Ohio will come through and elect Obama. Too bad it has to come down to ONE state. This election should be a landslide for Obama. This country is in for a big shock if Romney wins....BUT HE WON'T!

We know the demographics of the people voting for Obama and we know why they are voting for Obama. The majority of the country is right of center. It could turn out that Obama will lose the popular vote and win the electoral college vote. I hope Obama doesn't win as we need to get this economy moving again. Obama had his chance. In the private sector, he would of lasted six months, but its people's constitutional right to be stupid and elect an incompetent President.

Mitt Romney is a highly moral man who happens to be amoral when it comes to politics - a salesman willing to make whatever pitch will sell at that moment and then change his " promises " if he becomes President. What reason does a rich man want to be President ? Simple, more money and power for himself, his investments and the richest at the expense of the poor and middle class. For those who thinks the country will improve if many programs designed toward the poor and middle class are gutted because the more programs/safety nets that are gutted, the less money the businesses will get and the less money businesses will get, the more jobs that will be lost. People need to realize that some programs are circulated back into the economy, for example, some want to do away with food stamps, take away food stamps and you will have large layoffs in stores that sells food plus the money " saved " will be wiped in other ways to compensate for survival among the poor. It cost more money per MONTH of jail time than it cost an entire YEAR of food stamps. Take away the safety net, programs for the poor and middle class and end up paying more for rising crime, ( sarcastic ) yeah, that will solve the deficit !
