Romney: Back on the attack in Virginia

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney hits the campaign trail in Roanoke, Virginia criticizing President Obama's economic and energy policies.

ROANOKE, VA -- Stumping in western Virginia on Thursday, Mitt Romney resumed his full-throated critique of President Barack Obama, mocking the president's proposed new cabinet position to oversee businesses' needs and predicting four more years of a stagnant economy should the incumbent be re-elected.

David Goldman / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney waves as he takes the stage for a campaign event at a window and door factory, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, in Roanoke, Va.

“He’s got to find something to suggest it’s going to better over the next four years," Romney said of the president in his opening remarks.  "And so he came up with an idea last week, which is he’s going to create the Department of Business. I don’t think adding a new chair in his cabinet will help add millions of jobs on Main Street."

"We don’t need a secretary of business to understand business. We need a president who understands business, and I do,” he concluded.

President Obama suggested consolidating other federal agencies into a "one-stop shop" position of a cabinet-level secretary overseeing business issues in an interview with MSNBC earlier this week.

Top Talkers: Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski talk with President Obama on Saturday, October 27 in Nashua, New Hampshire about everything from the recent attacks in Benghazi, Libya to his thoughts on his last campaign.

Romney's attack on the president marks a return to more aggressive tactics, which were shelved for several days during Hurricane Sandy and its immediate aftermath.

Campaigning in Florida on Wednesday, Romney never mentioned the name "Obama," focusing instead on his own plans, and leaving any criticism of the president implicit. Romney continued to urge his supporters to donate to the relief effort this morning, but with the president returning to the campaign trail today, it was clear that the time for holding back had ended.

"I can also tell you this – if the president were to be re-elected, you’re going to see high levels of unemployment continue and stalled wage growth – if any wage growth at all, just like we’ve seen over the last four years," Romney said. "We know something about the past, we’ve seen what his policies have produced – the only way to get this economy going is the kind of bold change I’ve described."

Democrats were quick to push back on Romney's remarks here, and issued a statement which attempted to draw focus back to the auto bailout, which continues to be a driving issue in the campaign's final days in Ohio, perhaps the most hotly contested battleground state.

“The idea that Mitt Romney would help businesses grow as president doesn’t match his record or his policies. When the American auto industry and a million jobs were on the line, Romney turned his back, which is why he’s trying to rewrite history by telling desperate falsehoods to Ohio voters," Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith said in a statement.

Just when you thought the Romney campaign couldn't get any lower, they decide to run despicable ads in Florida as well. These guys are THAT desperate and It SHOWS.

Obama's campaign on Thursday said the move unduly rewards the Venezuelan leader. Venezuela has had tense relations with the U.S. government for years, even though the U.S. is a top buyer of its oil.

"Mitt Romney continues to play Hugo Chavez's game, giving Chavez the attention he thrives on and that he doesn't deserve," said Dan Restrepo, a national security adviser to the Obama campaign. "Keeping America safe and advancing U.S. interests require the kind of leadership President Obama has provided, not Romney's bluster."

GALLUP IS THE MOST TRUSTED AND MOST ACCURATE PRESIDENTIAL POLLING ORGANIZATION IN HISTORY...

AMERICANS SURVEYED IN THE GALLUP POLL HAVE PREDICTED THE WINNER OF THE POPULAR VOTE IN THE LAST 4 ELECTIONS!

Gallup shows Romney leading Obama in the early vote by a full seven points, 52-45%. Almost exactly four years ago (October 28, 2008), according to Gallup, Obama was massacring John McCain among early voters with a fifteen-point lead, 55-40%. That means, at least according to Gallup, that Obama's early vote advantage has dropped 22 points when compared to '08.

In the last three releases of the tracking poll conducted by The Washington Post and ABC News, Obama has trailed former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney among independent voters by between 16 and 20 percentage points.

That's a striking reversal from 2008, when Obama won independent voters, who made up 29 percent of the electorate, by eight points over Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

"In the 11 swing states, Mitt Romney earns 50% of the vote to Obama's 46%. Two percent (2%) like another candidate in the race, and another two percent (2%) are undecided.

Romney has now led for 12 straight days with margins of four to six points most of that time.

In 2008, Obama won these states by a combined margin of 53% to 46%, virtually identical to his national margin."

"Fifty-one percent (51%) of voters have a favorable opinion of Romney and 48% say the same of Obama."

n 2008, the Democrats had a 39-29 (D+10) advantage in hard party ID, and a 54-42 (D+12) advantage with leaners. In 2012 though, we're in the post-TEA party era. Republicans now show a 36-35 (R+1) hard party ID advantage, and a 49-46 (R+3) lead with leaners. This gives us a range of party ID swings from 2008, from R+11 to R+15.

BYE BYE OBAMA!!!

h/t The Obama Diary:

Romney seeing Obama and Christie together is tearing him apart.

DES MOINES (The Borowitz Report)—A new Mitt Romney is emerging in the closing days of the campaign, aides say: a man who is increasingly “being eaten alive with jealousy” by President Obama’s budding relationship with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

While Mr. Romney has told reporters that he is “totally fine” with Gov. Christie flying around in a helicopter with President Obama, privately he has told aides, “Seeing him with Chris Christie is tearing me apart.”

The trouble began earlier this week, a Romney aide said, when Mr. Romney saw Mr. Christie on CNN mention that President Obama “had given him his number at the White House.”

“Mitt was like, ‘Fine, whatever, do we have to watch this?’ and then basically ran out of the room,” the aide said. “It was completely awkward.”

Making matters worse, the aide said, “Chris Christie isn’t returning his calls.”

“Mitt was trying to explain his position on FEMA to reporters yesterday and he got all excited because his phone started vibrating,” the aide said. “It turned out it was just Ann.”

Mr. Romney, who has been seen doodling Chris Christie’s name in the margins of his briefing books in recent days, has apparently decided on a new course of action: to make the New Jersey governor jealous.

He’s been calling [New York Governor Andrew] Cuomo,” the aide said. “But Cuomo won’t call him back either. It’s all so sad.”

Feisty - the funny thing is, no one for a moment thought Romney wasn't campaigning throughout the storm. He never stopped. He didn't even have the decency to break for a couple of days while people were scrambling for their lives. After all, it didn't impact him and frankly, he doesn't give a damn about "those people."

Thankfully we have a President who not only cares but does his job during the crisis - unlike Bush during Katrina.

The real question for many on the fence is "do they hate Obama more than the plain old common sense that tells them that Romney is a lying snake oil salesman?". For four years the right wing has been trying to destroy Obama- and to Joe Sixpack that means Obama must be bad. The common man does not understand the base venality that is at the core of that hatred- it seems so ideological- in reality it is merely about dollars. You see my friends, that is the real God of the right wing-money.

"Facebook recently suspended a group because they challenged Obama about his Benghazi cover-up.

Evidently free speech in America is only free if you express liberal views."

Not really going to check whether this is really accurate or not, because frankly I don't care all that much if people get their panties in a wad because they got banned from a social media site. But as to your larger point, you are wrong. The First Amendment protects you from government retaliation against what you say. It doesn't protect you from the ramifications of your speech by private individuals or companies, as long as those individuals or companies are not breaking the law.

That is why you are allowed to boycott the Dixie Chicks and I am allowed to boycott Hank Williams Jr. Facebook is allowed to ban whoever they want to ban. They are allowed to do it for whatever reason they want to do it as long as the reason isn't discriminatory.

'Republicans' are not a protected group, no matter how much you'd like them to be.

Ok lets take a real look at the numbers.

When Nixon-Ford left office the national debt was......-$653,000,000,000.00

When Carter left office the national debt was.............-$930,000,000,000.00

When Reagan left office the national debt was..........-$2,000,000,000,000.00

When Bush 1 left office the national debt was...........-$4,000,000,000,000.00

When Clinton left office there was a surplus of.........+$127,000,000,000.00

When Bush 2 left office the national debt was..........-$12,000,000,000,000.00

At the end of Obama's 1st term the national debt.....-$16,000,000,000,000.00

is a reduction from 1.5 trillion a year under

Bush 2 to 1 trillion a year for Obama's 1st term.

This is a reduction of one half trillion per year.

The economy was in free fall hemorrhaging 700,000

jobs a month, and spiraling into a second great

Depression. Obama stopped the free fall and the

Economy is turning around and improving. While not

at the rate everyone would like to see, it is a

whole lot better than the failed policies to which

Romney wants to return.

Clinton left us with a small surplus after the deficits

the previous administrations left us. Bush 2 annihilated

the surplus and had us back in debt as fast as he could,

stripping the nations wealth and putting much of it in the

hands of his cohorts leaving us with a debt of 12 trillion

dollars.

Obama has it going in the right direction and is slowing

the increase in our national debt.

I ask you, do you really want to return to the failed

policies that put us in this hole?

Bush ran us at 150% rate of our current deficit spending,

do we really want to return to these policies?

Do we want to move backward, both financially and socially,

or do we want to continue to move forward?

Delusion at it's best.

Sure it irritates a lot of the Right, but a lot of the others think Obama off the campaign trail is a good thing.

Obama's comment about them having to prioritize better, sorry that is long established and the follow it to the letter.

Same thing with Cuomo.

It would have better to say, I see you are behind is there something I can do to get more equipment and manpower to you? Then again, the answer to that is already we have all the crews and equipment we can get from outside the area and the state.

I think his entire persona is an illusory MYTH. He didn't risk his OWN money to start Bain, he didn't put the middle class ahead of his RAIDING decisions. In fact, his entire life is about buying and selling things. Inanimate things. Stocks, companies, politicians.

Romney: Able to break the gridlock?

“Just about everybody agrees Washington is a gridlocked mess. But who’s the man to fix it? After two years of brawling and brinkmanship between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans, more voters trust Mitt Romney to break the stalemate, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows,” the AP writes. “Romney’s message — a vote for Obama is a vote for more gridlock — seems to be getting through. Almost half of likely voters, 47 percent, think the Republican challenger would be better at ending the logjam, compared with 37 percent for Obama.”

Advertise | AdChoices
“Mitt Romney on Wednesday stepped up his support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, further rebuffing accusations that he would end funding for disaster relief if elected president,” the Boston Globe says. Romney said in a statement: “I believe that FEMA plays a key role in working with states and localities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters. As president, I will ensure FEMA has the funding it needs to fulfill its mission, while directing maximum resources to the first responders who work tirelessly to help those in need, because states and localities are in the best position to get aid to the individuals and communities affected by natural disasters.”

His campaign though walked a fine line: “Governor Romney believes that states should be in charge of emergency management in responding to storms and other natural disasters in their jurisdictions,” said Amanda Henneberg, a Romney campaign spokeswoman. “As the first responders, states are in the best position to aid affected individuals and communities and to direct resources and assistance to where they are needed most. This includes help from the federal government and FEMA.”

During the GOP primary when he said this about federal funding for disasters in a debate: “Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.”

But: “George Haddow, a private disaster relief consultant and former deputy chief of staff at FEMA during the 1990s, said Romney’s vision for FEMA sounds like that of former President George W. Bush, who was criticized for the government’s slow response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. ‘The problem is it doesn’t reflect the reality of major disasters,’ Haddow said.”

Haley Barbour on FOX: “The biggest change in the race is to Obama’s favor — and that's been this storm.” He added that he’d be “surprised if he doesn’t make a little bit of a comeback here.” He even said the storm was “like manna from heaven” for Obama.

“By the second rally at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, [Romney’s] surrogates appeared ready for something more combative,” USA Today’s Kucinich writes. “As the Red Cross donation number beamed near him, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., slammed the president's foreign policy. ‘Remember, and he went to Egypt to apologize, to tell the world that the United States was going to be humbler and mellower and that, frankly, we are so sorry for the sacrifices of the Americans for generations,’ he said. ‘Well, now — now Egypt is controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. Now, in Libya, they murder our ambassador, kill three other brave Americans, and the president is nowhere to be found to answer what happened.’

“Later, [Jeb] Bush, who at the first rally had focused on the changes Romney would make to the country for the better, said the president was more focused on shifting the blame than bringing people together. ‘His entire strategy is to blame others — starting with my brother, of course,’ he said, referring to former president George W. Bush. ‘Basically, he blames every possible thing rather than having the humility to be able to reach out and to find common ground.’”

Despite GM criticizing the Jeep ad, Romney’s campaign defended it. Adviser Kevin Madden said the ad "makes the case for why Gov. Romney would be stronger for the auto industry and why the auto industry's an important part of a strong economy."

Updated as of 1:00pm EST on Thursday, November 1 (Happy All Souls Day!):

With only 107 hours left to go in the 2012 presidential campaign, Real Clear Politics has Obama leading in eight of their eleven toss-up states with Romney leading in three.

In descending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Obama, followed in ascending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Romney, here are the published averaged numbers from RCP as of 1:00pm EST together with the most recent FiveThirtyEight election night probabilities of victory for either candidate:

In PENNSYLVANIA, with 20 electoral votes, Obama's lead has dropped slightly to 4.6%, down from Tuesday's 4.7%. Nonetheless, FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 95.5% chance of victory here, up 1.3% from Tuesday.

In WISCONSIN, with 10 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 3.7%, down from yesterday's 4.0%. Nonetheless, FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama an 88.0% chance of victory here, up a significant 2.3% from Tuesday.

In MICHIGAN, with 16 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 3.0%, down significantly from Tuesday's 4.0%. However, FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 98.4% chance of victory here, up 0.3% from Tuesday.

In NEVADA, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.7%, up from yesterday's 2.4%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama an 85.2% chance of victory here, up a substantial 5.5% from Tuesday.

In OHIO, with 18 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.3%, up slightly from Tuesday's 2.1%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 79.9% chance of victory here, up a substantial 6.6% from Tuesday.

In IOWA, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.2%, up from yesterday's 1.3%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 78.4% chance of victory winning here, up a significant 4.5% from Tuesday.

In NEW HAMPSHIRE, with 4 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 1.3%, up from yesterday's 1.0%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 75.2% chance of victory here, up a substantial 4.9% from Tuesday.

In COLORADO, with 9 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 0.6%, up from Tuesday's tie. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 62.6% chance of victory here, up a substantial 7.2% from Tuesday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In VIRGINIA, with 13 electoral votes, Romney's lead has risen to 0.5%, up from Tuesday's tie. Interestingly, FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 6.3% chance of victory here, up a significant 3.1% from Tuesday.

In FLORIDA, with 29 electoral votes, Romney's lead has fallen to 1.2%, down slightly from Tuesday's 1.3%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Romney a 58.8% chance of victory here, down a substantial 5.9% from Tuesday.

In NORTH CAROLINA, with 15 electoral votes, Romney's lead has risen to 3.8%, up from Tuesday's 3.0%. FiveThirtyEight continues to give Romney an 80.8% chance of victory here.

So...

All in all, while Romney's polling percentages in five of the eleven toss-ups has improved over the past two days, his chance of winning in four of these six (Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Virginia) has actually declined. This curious development is a function of Romney losing the race against the clock where his gains are simply not occurring quickly enough to make a difference.

In any case, in order for Obama to win re-election the least complex route appears to be through maintaining his current lead in the five toss-up states where his existing margins are widest (Pennsylvania at 4.6%, Wisconsin at 3.7%, Michigan at 3.0%, Nevada at 2.7%, and Ohio at 2.3%). Doing so would bring his electoral vote total on Election Day to 271. In this scenario, Obama could still surpass 270 while failing to hold Iowa, New Hampshire, and Colorado.

However, should Obama fail to hold Ohio, the loss could effectively be neutralized by any of the following combination of wins from states where FiveThirtyEight is currently predicting Obama victories:

Path #1: Obama loses Ohio but wins Iowa, New Hampshire, and Colorado resulting in 272 electoral votes.

Path #2: Obama loses Ohio but steals Virginia while also taking New Hampshire, Iowa, or Colorado resulting in 270, 272, or 275 electoral votes, respectively.

Interestingly, with Romney's lead having diminished significantly in Florida over the past two weeks and with Hurricane Sandy forcefully highlighting the stark contrast between the candidates regarding the value and necessity if not the mere existence of FEMA in a state which has perhaps the greatest dependence on federal storm relief efforts in the nation, a 3rd path has now emerged which could provide for some interesting election night television:

Path #3: Obama comes from behind to win Florida. This scenario would require only that Obama win the three states in which his present leads are widest (Pennsylvania at 4.6%, Wisconsin at 3.7%, and Michigan at 3.0%), resulting in 276 electoral votes.

For Romney to unseat Obama, he not only would have to hold the three states in which he presently leads, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia bringing his electoral vote total to 248, but also steal a victory in Colorado where Obama's lead rose today to 0.6% and in Ohio where Obama's lead yesterday settled at 2.3%. By so doing, Romney's electoral vote total would reach 275.

Should Romney fail to steal Ohio he could overcome this shortfall by capturing the four other states in which Obama's current leads are smallest (Colorado at 0.6%, New Hampshire at 1.3%, Iowa at 2.2%, and Nevada at 2.7%) resulting in an electoral vote total of 273.

FiveThirtyEight this morning estimates the chance of Election Day victory for each candidate as follows: Obama 79.0% (up from yesterday's 77.4%) and Romney 21.0% (down from yesterday's 22.6%).

FiveThirtyEight also projects that on Election Day the final electoral tally will be as follows: Obama 300 (up from yesterday's 299) and Romney 238 (down from yesterday's 239).

Lastly, although it makes no difference in terms of the final result which can only be determined by the Electoral College, FiveThirtyEight currently predicts a national popular vote distribution on Election Day as follows: Obama 50.5% (up from yesterday's 50.4%) and Romney 48.6% (also up from yesterday's 48.5%).

With only 107 hours of campaigning left, the fog finally appears to be lifting on this one.

They know their chances of a major storm in the next 4 years is significant and who wants to count on the etch-a-sketch man to decide if he'll bother to help or not! Florida is going to be a BIG surprise for Romney as it goes for Obama.

Antistupidty, your screen name is an oxymoron after that post. Under obama's current policies the projected natl debt wlll exceed 20 trillion dollars by the end of 2015..

Which is a vast amount better than it would be returning to the idiocy of the previous administration which would be 22 Trillion, if staying in proportion

You FAIL. Basic arithmetic, something the republicans are trying to rewrite, unfortunately for them math is an absolute.

My husband commented during that segment on LOD that even THEN Romney didn't show LEADERSHIP, he just asked to be told what to do

Clara, this is exactly why republicans here in MA don't support Romney. He showed zero interest in leadership. I got a bit of a heads up from the GOP here when Romney won the nomination.

They told me - watch what happens - Romney will not bring the GOP together . He will do just the opposite and the GOP will lose big because of him.

And when you see people like Col. Larry Wilkerson and Gen. Colin Powell and Susan Eisenhower and many many other republicans coming out to say they won't vote for Romney, republicans will say they saw it coming from a mile away.

They were right on.

Antistupidity

Antistupidity...

You are either stupid OR a complete liar twisting numbers and mixing concepts to meet your needs.

The country did NOT have a DEBT surplus when Clinton left office!

The country had a BUDGET surplus when Clinton left office. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE!

In September of 2000 (just before the election that brought GW Bush to office and saw Clinton leave) the US National Debt stood at

Here are the details: http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/histdebt/histdebt_histo5.htm

U.S. National Debt

09/30/2010 was
13,561,623,030,891.79

09/30/2009 was
11,909,829,003,511.75

09/30/2008 was
10,024,724,896,912.49

09/30/2007 was
9,007,653,372,262.48

09/30/2006 was
8,506,973,899,215.23

09/30/2005 was
7,932,709,661,723.50

09/30/2004 was

09/30/2003 was

09/30/2002 was
6,228,235,965,597.16

09/30/2001 was
5,807,463,412,200.06

09/30/2000 was

BTW...

Did anyone notice that (from the US Treasury) the NATIONAL DEBT grew from

10,024,724,896,912.49 in September of 2008 (that's just over 10T in Bush's last year... right before the election)

to 13,561,623,030,891.79 (that's just over 13.5T in the first two years into Obama's first term)

to over 16.223T now?

Has anyone noticed that?

That means that Bush grew the debt from 5.67T to 10.02T in 8 years

and Obama grew the debt from 10.02T to 16.22T in just 4 years.

Who did the worse job here people?

Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL said:

Big mistake on his part, in a time of crises, the country unites rather than divides!

So you are giving Biden a pass for being an attack dog for the last three days? BTW Romney pulled attack ads for a few days and postponed his campaign. That is what most people call no attacks, but you just want people to stop talking about how the economy still stinks, unemployment is way too high, too many people who are forced to use food stamps, unemployment and disability, deficit is too high, and how Obama told the military to stand down and let four Americans die in Benghazi. Maybe you want to talk about Big Bird and Romnesia, but the rest of us want to talk about what really matters.

America loses again if either Mitt or Obama is elected. All they do is work against each other and play the blame game. We need a Third party to come in and force the other parties to work more together. The Independent party stands the best chance if we all vote this way.

    Anti Stupidity

IF you only believe a Republican, you will always elect a Republican. If you only believe a Democrat, you will aways elect a Democrat.

Boy did you foul that post up.

First off, a president cannot spend one nickel unless approved by Congress. Second, Bush only signed a continuing Resolutions to fund the Fed for 2009 Through March. From March on, Obama not only signed off on the excessive spending Bush vetoed but added his stimulus funds to the budget numbers. The only vetoes Bush ever used was in his last 2 years under the democrat. Almost everyone one was them spending more than he asked for.

Second off, If there was a true budget surplus as recorded, then the national debt would have decreased. Seeing as We were supposed to have an overall budget surplus for 4 years and Federal budget surplus for 2 years, explain why the national debt increased.

Year US Debt Increase in debt

    1994 $4.692 Trillion $281 Billion

    1995 $4.973 Trillion $281 Billion

    1996 $5.224 Trillion $250 Billion

    1997 $5.413 Trillion $188 Billion

    1998 $5.526 Trillion $113 Billion

    1999 $5.656 Trillion $130 Billion

    2000 $5.674 Trillion $ 18 Billion

    2001 $5.807 Trillion $133 Billion

    2002 $5.228 Trillion $420 Billion

That's right, there was no paying down the debt, only decreasing how much debt was accumulating.

Neither party is very responsible, but the last times a budget was pass with a lower amount than what the President Requested was from 1996 - 2001. 1995 resulted in the Federal Government shutting down.

Who did that? The Republicans And bill because The republicans cut the social spending more than Clinton would allow.

Ok for those of you that yell under Obama the debt will reach 20T by 2016. Let me ask this question, what would be the debt under Romney by 2016? The answer would be the same except Seniors and the poor would be less supported.

As far as annual deficits, I guess if you dont see that continuing now what is now one war rather than two with the Bush tax cuts still in place as the main contributing factor then you really dont understand finance and economics. Its like having your spouse run up credit card debt then you catching the blame for having less to spend because you have to pay for that bill.

The bottom line is that a tax cut should have never occured while maintainig 2 wars! Bush is the only President in history that has that distinction. Spend more on war with less revenue due to his tax cuts. I could see your point if the two wars were finished when Obama took office but since they were still going on and now finally dwindling down you're point is inaccurate.

Liberals must live in a make-believe fantasy world.

The race carelectoral passions is again making a comeback in the liberal world. Is it necessary for them to stir up electora passions, justify outcomes and explain away inconvenient truths?se

What happened to those people who voted for Obama in '08? Did they suddenly become racist or have they lost confidence in Obama four years later? Obama had a 70% approval rating early in his administration. Did those people now opposing him suddenly become racist?

No one questions why 95% of blacks support the president. Is it racial, or is it simply that more African-Americans happen to be Democrats?

If Obama loses, and it looks as if he may, will it be his own un-doing or because the white electorate haven't moved beyond race, even though the majority of white voters elected him in '08?

To answer Romney's question, a repeat of the last four years is still definitely better that the policies that a Romney/Ryan administration would bring to us.

But, it's a stupid question because we wouldn't get four more years of the same under Obama anyway, since the recovery is taking hold and most analysts see several years of growth coming our way in continuing the current policies. It might still be slower than we all like, but we're part of a global economy and until our global customers get back on their feet, our recovery is being stalled by them.

If the Euro and Greece issues hadn't happened, we'd be in a decent stage of recovery by now.

Romney is about to be charged in court for violating the Federal Ethics in Government law.

In 2009, Ann Romney partnered with her husband's key donor, billionaire Paul Singer, who secretly bought a controlling interest in Delphi Auto, the former GM auto parts division. Singer's hedge fund, Elliott Management, threatened to cut off GM's supply of steering columns unless GM and the government's TARP auto bail-out fund provided Delphi with huge payments. While the US treasury complained this was "extortion," the hedge funds received, ultimately, $12.9 billion in taxpayer subsidies.

As a result, the shares Singer and Romney bought for just 67 cents are today worth over $30, a 4,000% gain. Singer's hedge fund made a profit of $1.27 billion and the Romney's tens of millions. G.Palast

At last, somebody brings up the dire issue of climate change! Bloomberg has endorsed Obama--climate change means superstorms like Sandy and Irene last year are the new normal.

    Romney wants to:

    1) privatize FEMA,

    2) defund FEMA altogether, transferring responsibility to the states, and/or

    3) cut FEMA by 22%--Take your pick, he's said all three.

The simple truth is, when the next Sandy happens--and it will--if Romney's elected, the fed will not be there to provide funding to help, and there will be no coordinated effort. Individual states each trying something during a natural disaster with few resources and nobody at the top to get it organized would result in sheer chaos, many more deaths, and yes, greater economic loss and far longer recoveries.

Ironically, my Republican step sister was forced to take a 20% paycut from her republican boss and she's still there!

Personally I think this underscores that Republicans fear CHANGE more than they fear getting screwed over in their 'steady' job.

I've had a >30% wage increase within the last 4 years. My boss is a (D) and a job creator. I'm now a (D) switched from (I) and I now am able to create jobs. Neither of us are super rich, but we put our money where it counts. We don't sit on profits, we spend to create. Sitting on profits doesn't create jobs, it creates stagnation.

I've already voted For our current President. Republicans spent 8 years ruining our economy, I'll give the Democrats 8 years (at minimum) to clean up after their mess.

Oh, God, give me a break! I live in Alaska for crying out loud! The cost of living here is very expensive, and we have all felt the brunt of it, so you know what we do? We work harder and we are not as obsessed with material items as many of the rest in other states. I live in a state with little infrastructure, save the oil industry, and those bastards are a bunch of cheating thieves. You know what we do to them? We make them prove that they should receive subsidies, or lower taxes! It is our oil, in our state, and people are waking up to the fact that we are not going to be bullied by a bunch of corporate ass holes who only care about their bottom line.

Food is going up due to speculator's taking over in the commodities market. Try reading occasionally you might find that the price of gas is also controlled by the markets as well.

Ticked Off - when you spout the stupid "gubment check" rhetoric it says more about you than it does about any of us. I'm sorry your relatives are unemployed but there are jobs out there. They may not make as much as they did and it may just be a job they take until something better comes along but sometimes people have to do that.

If you believe a man who is responsible for sending a complete group of jobs from Illinois to China is ing to help you - you're sadly mistaken. Wake up! Romney doesnt' give a damn!

Ticked Off in Ohio, I just took your advice and went to Romney's youtube channel and watched the Featured Video of him explaining why he has the experience to help deal with the East Coast's recovery. Once, when he was in High School he helped clean up a football field after a game. I'm going to go out on a limb here, and assume there are other High School students who have helped cleanup a football field more than once, making them more qualified than Romney. I'll be sure to check out his other videos if they are as entertaining and humorous as the Featured Video, thanks again for the advice.

I only partially took your advice this time because:

            1. I don't have a YouTube account nor do I want one.

            2. I wouldn't post something with no value like Romney sucks.

            3. I really don't care about either administration's policies on YouTube commentary.

But I did go to Obama's channel and I saw how he already IS coordinating the recovery efforts for the East Coast, he must have cleaned up many football fields in his time since even Fox News is praising his efforts. What exactly is the point you are trying to make Ticked Off? Because you seem to be trying to talk Romney up and talk Obama down, but the opposite is occurring as we follow your advice.

And I feel truly sorry for those Americans who may think that troops, such as myself, should be taxed while we are risking our lives overseas. I highly doubt it's about censorship as much as it is about keeping the YouTube channel clean, do you see anyone there saying Romney sucks? No. There are probably tons of people trying to post negative comments about Romney on Obama's channel like there are tons of negative comments about Obama on Romney's channel. You really are crazy if you support youtube comments above your nation's troops. Romney really is giving a new meaning to the saying "the only certainties in life are death and taxes." And by the way, I am republican and have been all my life, but Romney stands for everything the Republican party needs to purge, so I don't fit into your democratic sheep comment.

Romney uses a preacher-like style that is light on real world talking points. I would even call it anecdotal in nature.

According to Wikipedia, "modification in reuse may convert a particular anecdote to a fictional piece, one that is retold but is 'too good to be true'"...

People draw useful inspiration from a story that could be factually weak. That's okay when it is the inspiration that counts.

But someone forgot to tell Romney that "truth be damned" won't work in politics.

Insisting Chrysler is building Jeeps in China doesn't make it true. Nor does it act as "inspiration" to vote Romney.

Romney is preaching to fact checkers. Apparently nobody from his campaign has managed to explain that to him.

This is something I saw about my uncles ads that made me think i'm picking correctly. His ad said do you really want someone thats willing to work with the president? Then showed a ad of the dem saying he would work with what ever president thats in office. Democrat or Republican, I want someone in office that will work with the president. I don't want someone that will hurt people just to get their way.

I haven't forgotten about what happened last year. Where Obama was giving into Republicans over and over and they wouldn't work with him at all. Republicans seem to act like what they've done for 2 years never happened. Why would you want more of the problem in office? You shouldn't have to have all republicans running office for them to get along. If they are unable to work with democrats they don't need to be in office to begin with.

Obama told the republicans they could ride in the back of the bus. Tell me, how would you react to that?

To Obama and many of the democrats it's their way or the highway, no middle ground. Obama's idea of 'reaching across the aisle' is for the republicans to roll over and let him have whatever he wants.

Why do you think so many TEA Party backed people were put into Congress in 2010?

They have done what they could to stop the runaway spending that Obama and the democrats want to do.

The tenths of a percent, or the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin, are pretty meaningless in an election that was supposed to be (and the challenger deserves at least half his money back) a REFERENDUM on the incumbent's term in office, but became a CHOICE )Look at HIS plan, then look at MINE) election.

The choice of "direction" replaced the "are you better off yadda yadda .."meme

Strategically the choice will be studied by political students and political consultants of both parties for years to come...

While the President was taking care of business in the wake of Sandy, Willard was taking three days to figure out his talking points on whether or not he wants to keep FEMA. Willard, to his credit did manage to squeeze in a cheesy photo op of his campaign buying supplies from Wal-Mart and tell a bunch of lies about the Jeep assembly line being shipped to China. We saw President Obama being a leader and reaching across the aisle in this disaster while Willard looked desperate, phony and beneath the office he seeks.

            SeekingSanity who writes as usual.

Seeking approval - Again girlfriend? Can you think for yourself? every day I see the same thing " Feisty what do you think, am I good, how am I doing it.

As far as capaigning, your Idol my President, was camapigning in wisconsin already with his usual ranting Ah, Ehhhh, Uuhhhh. This happens to people when they do not have anythig else to say, or are just lying to the crowd.

Go ahead and make fun of me and correct my spelling. Go and call Mommy and ask for permission to move your left leg.

The R and R railroad express is coming soon.

Romney/Ryan, just because we can not stand another 4 years of Bull.

His ad's are playing back to back, he never went off attack. He actually has 4 new ad's in VA. Then one that is annoying, he keeps saying the jobs he will bring in. The jobs he is talking about are already their, its just no one has the degree's to do them. Why run the ad if you know they can't get the jobs if they have no degrees? They still wont be able to work so its kinda retarded to me.

stayinformednow - what an absolute lie. President Obama has not called Romney every name in the book from day one. It appears you've confused President Obama with the Republicans running against Romney. Romney - on the other hand - has lied, lied, lied and called the President names. It's all Romney has because he knows he has no truth to tell that can win against our President

Romney is ruining Romney on his own. His mouth and things he's done and said are coming back. If he would have ran his campaign at least as good as McCain. He wouldn't be worried as much about back lash. McCain only lost because of Sarah and his statement he made at the wrong time. When he said the market was fine and it went down a week later. Romney started his nasty ad's just after he got Ryan. They ran a month before Obama ever responded, I remember this because the ad's made it look like he was telling the truth about Obama. Obama took the long to respond to the ads. A month without responding and the ads are played at each commercial break.

Obama wants to talk about everything but his record, Benghazi, Fast & Furious, the debt, backing terrorists...

Last August, the democrats even said they were going to run a negative campaign - the one thing they've kept their word on.

"I can also tell you this – if the president were to be re-elected, you’re going to see high levels of unemployment continue and stalled wage growth – if any wage growth at all, just like we’ve seen over the last four years," Romney said.

Unemployment? After tax cut upon tax cut upon tax cut that was supposed to help the "Job Creators" they still aren't hiring. Why is that?

Lack of wage growth? In 1978 the average CEO made 26 times what the average worker did. The average CEO now makes 206 times what the average worker does. This is a bigger issue than just he last 4 years and Mr. Romney, as an experienced businessman, should know this.

He does...he knows all too well what tax cuts to the top will do for middle class people.....absolutely nothing....small businesses do not hire people simply because they get a tax cut..they hire people because there is demand....and Romney offers nothing to increase demand....nothing at all...and we need responsible leadership to deal with the deficit which ROMNEY's plan does not do... in fact it adds to the deficit over the next 4 years....Romney's 12 million jobs....already baked into the current economic forecast....regardless if he takes office..when you talk about deficit reduction you don't preface it with a $5 trillion dollar tax cut that will INCREASE the deficit and then add on top of that $2 TRILLION for defense spending.....that's adding $7 TRILLION to the current deficit........that's the plan.....then he is going to make cuts (what cuts not sure) but he's going to make cuts to programs like EPA, FDA, FEMA and education and healthcare....and that's only to cover the $7 TRILLION increase! Nothing in his budget REDUCES the deficit...and he's not claiming he can...at least not in his first term...which he has evidently set aside to bolster the wealth of the few....reduce their tax rates, cut capital gains, eliminate the estate tax for estates over $5.1 Million (which benefits his sons and family! but not any middle class folks I know)...people are so misled and easily so..believing the hate mongering that has taken over the REPUBLICAN party I used to respect...now I am an independent voter.....and Romney who has vetoed legislation over 800 times as Governor of MASS that in turn was overruled by the Democratic Leg. 744 times is not the guy who is going to help us....sorry but this long lost moderate republican knows a conservative right wing say anything to get into office politician for who he is....call it as I see it.

Moderator, I'm glade you are able to see thru the bull. Romney can't make jobs without poor and middle class. This is what small business doesn't seem to get either. Rich do not buy cheap things, poor and middle class does. If middle class and poor don't have the money to shop. They are saving and going pay check to pay check. You have no business and you won't be hiring workers. A Mitt ad had a company here fussing about how they lost business. They lost business because their food was expensive and was nasty.

Poor and middle class are the ones buying the fast food mostly. To me they sounded stupid saying what they did. With no poor or middle class buying you can't make profit.

DaNoid: Correction. The average CEO now rakes in 383 times what the average employee earns--and the CEO has a lower tax rate! The 1% have been actively and deliberately pressing class warfare since the 1950s--there's ample documentation about that. They even wrote,"We don't make all the money because we have money already--we make it because only we understand what power is and how to use it."

Obama/Biden and a Democratice House & Senate--moving forward for all

"All my time I have never heard an American corporation in the waning hours of the campaign engage with that kind of description of what a presidential candidate's doing," Biden said after quoting a General Motors statement calling the Romney ad "campaign politics at its cynical worst."

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Noting that Chrysler production plans for Jeep had entered the public debate, Marchionne said, “I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China.

“Jeep is one of our truly global brands with uniquely American roots. This will never change. So much so that we committed that the iconic Wrangler nameplate, currently produced in our Toledo, Ohio plant, will never see full production outside the United States,” he continued

Jealousy is such an ugly emotion,I hope Romney can get over it,lol:

ROMNEY: “SEEING HIM WITH CHRIS CHRISTIE IS TEARING ME APART”
            Posted by

“He’s been calling [New York Governor Andrew] Cuomo,” the aide said. “But Cuomo won’t call him back either. It’s all so sad.”

Those not viewing the events of the past week through the murky beer-goggles of partisanship recognize the benefits of the chief executive successfully managing a crisis...the tendency to rally round the President, and the ensuing "bump" it entails.

This was probably the one unknown unknown or "October surprise" of the final push. Thus far the incumbent has performed well and that is not good for the challenger, and there is little that the challenger can do to remove the mantle of leadership the incumbent can project from this situation in the remaining few days...

Of course O-H-I-O was not in the storm's path...

Romney's on the way out. No campaign would tell this many lies & act like this if they thought they were winning & thought they had the high ground on the economy, social issues, etc. He will say anything to get your vote, even if it's different from what he told someone else yesterday. Here are just a FEW examples:
            - Personhood (including the Blunt Amendment)

            - Abortion Rights and Roe VS Wade

            - Eliminating FEMA

            - Gay rights

            - The Ryan Budget

            - Universal health care

            - Blind trusts

            - Personal tax returns

            - Equal pay for equal work

            - The auto bailout

            - Hiring of teachers, police and firefighters

            - Investing in / "cracking down" on China

            - Shipping jobs overseas

            - Tax cuts/shelters and deductions

            - College loans and financing

            - Foreign policy (he suddenly sounds like the
            president!)

            - Immigration

            - Medicare/Medicaid

            - Welfare work requirement issue

            - Goverment bailouts (like the ones he took at Bain & the
            olympics)

            - Bank regulation/deregulation

            - His infamous 47% comments caught on tape

            - Tax cuts vs defense spending vs the deficit

            - Gun control (Romney signed an assault weapons ban in MA, Pres.
Obama INCREASED the number of places where gun owners can carry their
            firearms.)

He even lies about wierd stuff, like:

            - Who his immigration advisor is

            - His dad "marched" with Dr.. King? (no he did
            not)

            - His primary residence: Utah vs MA (changed this retroactively so
            he could run for governor)

            - When did he "retire" from Bain Capital (changed this
            retroactively also)

            - Does he eat "cheezy grits?"

            - His first name (It's Willard - why did he tell Wolf Blitzer that
            it is Mitt?)

I don't like either party, but Pres. Obama is the clear choice this
year. He has worked to keep his promises, and has done a good job considering
the fact that the Republican leadership in Congress gave him no cooperation.
They have thrown the U.S. economy - and all of us - under the bus in hopes of
blaming the president & getting him out of office. They held something like
34 symbolic votes against Obamacare, but they couldn't allow a single vote on
any of his jobs bills? I hope everyone remembers this when they go to the polls
            next week - I know I will.

            p4554p,

Reading your post I saw the part about George Romney not marching with MLK, which caused me to dig a little on the internet. According to this article:

            George Romney didn't march with MLK, (nice lie there), however he did support MLK's cause and in doing so got this letter from the Mormon Church voicing heir disapproval. Click on the link in the article leading to the letter. Maybe it's just me but it's oozing with veiled threats saying things like;

"When I reflect upon the Prophet's statements and remember what happened to three of our nations presidents who were very active in the Negro cause, I am sobered by their demise. They went contrary to the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith,"...those who are determined to pursue a course, which shows an opposition, and a feverish restlessness against the decree of the Lord, will learn, when perhaps it is too late for their own good. that God can do His own work, without the aid of those who are not dictated by His counsel." has and will continue to be fulfilled."

The letter goes on to describe a "personal experience" where a friend in Arizona was a "champion of the colored race" who met a tragic end by drowning.

Translation: "If you keep this up, you're gonna die.

Mr. Romney - fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Both the Chrysler CEO (Chrysler makes Jeeps) and GM CEO have totally refuted your claim that Chinese Jeep plants will take away American jobs. Your statement is totally untrue.

So, why are you lying to us, Mr. Romney? Do you think we're stupid?

so trapp, you know for a fact that there was a seal team in benghazi - which no-one else has heard of or knows about?

I guess stating the facts is something both you and Romney have problems with. not lies, just not the truth!

What can you tell me about balckwater type operatives who were in Benghazi, and by all accounts should not have been there?!

Isn't "trapp" the name of one of those trashy Palin kids? Given the ignorant, unresearched comment, "trapp" must be the "special" one.

trapp211 - President Obama has held private jobs. Try to do a little research before you just post your usual stupidity. He was an attorney plus he taught Constitutional Law at the Universit of Chicago (a private school). He also has written several best sellers - which accounts for most of his income.

            Go away stupid!

            armand

why do you you lie- It is obvious you know nothing about the financial world.'

Obama,Pelosi,Romney and many others keep their money in the Caymans and burmuda because they are wise.

All have to do extra paperwork on their tax returns but for preservation of their capital it is well worth it.

Our banking system is so corrupt and Frank/Dodd made it more corrupt- The Caymans is the 5th largest offshore banking in the world for a reason.

The financial rules were put together by the banking industry themselves(self regulated) with no Government Bureaucracy or red tape.

It is one of the most efficient and fliud systems in the world which makes it very difficult to commit fraud against the system.

there are no tax advantages of any kind only protection against fraud and loss of capital like what happened in September 2008 courtesy of Fannie and Freddie.

dont post rhetoric on somethinng you have no understaanding of.

john with lotsa numbers: You're misinformed. 40% of America;s wealth has been extracted, over 30 trillions, by the wealthy to evade taxation. That's legal right now, but may not be very much longer.

It's certainly unAmerican, and the only evidence we have, among the people you name, is that Romney does it--not only in the Caymans & Bermuda, but also in Luxembourg and other tax shelters around the globe.

Care to prove your allegations against the president? I didn't think so. You see, his tax records for ten years have been made public. Willard's tax records have not. In fact, Willard's offered less tax information than any other presidential candidate since the practice began.

Come to think of it, he hasn't said what or how he'll do anything as president, either.

But we do know he equates saving lives and cleanup after devastating catastrophe with cleaning up after a football game. And he thinks FEMA's role should either be drastically reduced, privatized, or eliminated.

Do you live in a disaster-free zone?

The U.S. Mission in Benghazi convened an “emergency meeting” less than a month before the assault that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, because Al Qaeda had training camps in Benghazi and the consulate could not defend against a “coordinated attack,” according to a classified cable reviewed by Fox News

So why was Stevens in Benghazi? With reduced security and known dangers lurking nearby - why was he at the consulate in Benghazi?

Repubs are all for personal responsibility, they had a meeting to discuss how dangerous it was, and he still went? Why was Stevens in Benghazi? Why wasn't he conducting his business in Tripoli?

He took it upon himself to go knowing the risk he was taking. He felt it was important despite the risk. You would have a smoking gun if you could prove he was ordered to go in spite of his fears.

concern citizen: Did you mean "Concerned Citizen?" Newsflash: when Fox calls an exclusive--meaning nobody else has the story--it's because the story is untrue.

You're buying conservative mogul Rupert Murdoch's agenda, not factual news. Facetiously called "opinion journalism," Fox presents stories like fairy tales. They even change words in quotations, making the "quotations" untrue.

Studies prove Fox News adherents are less informed than folks who watch any other news channels.
