*** Will Obama’s firewall hold? The 2012 presidential election could very well hinge on this question: Will President Obama’s Midwest firewall -- Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin -- hold up? The Romney campaign believes it won’t. “Right now, their firewall is burning,” Romney Political Director Rich Beeson said on a conference call yesterday (though that observation isn’t yet backed up by the public polls). As for the Obama campaign, it’s signaling that they have to hold these Midwest states, especially Ohio. Just look at the president’s travel over the last five days of the campaign: four stops in Ohio, three stops in Wisconsin, and two stops in Iowa. (And compare that with two stops in Colorado, one stop in Nevada, one stop in Florida, and one in Virginia.) So you see where the Obama camp is putting its candidate, and that’s likely where the race will be decided. And at the end of the day, Romney has to pick off two of those three states (Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin).

*** New NBC/WSJ/Marist polls: Obama leads in IA, running neck and neck in WI, NH: Speaking of that Midwest firewall, we have new NBC/WSJ/Marist poll numbers. In Iowa, Obama is ahead of Romney by six points among likely voters, 50%-44%, which is down from his eight-point lead in October. In Wisconsin, the president edges Romney by three points, 49%-46%, which is within the survey’s margin of error and which is down from Obama’s six-point lead. And in New Hampshire, Obama gets support from 49% of likely voters, while Romney gets 47%. The good news for Obama in these surveys: He’s ahead and is hitting either 49% or 50%. The warning sign for him: His approval rating among likely voters in Iowa and New Hampshire is at 48%, which is below his ballot number. (By comparison, his 49% approval rating in Wisconsin exactly matches his ballot number.) This matters because it suggests that Obama’s support in Iowa and New Hampshire could be a little less than the ballot number.
*** Obama’s closing argument: With Obama back on the campaign trail after three days off dealing with Hurricane Sandy, his campaign says he begin laying out his closing argument. The message, per an Obama campaign official: “While Gov. Romney promotes the same policies that failed our country and ran the middle class into the ground and calls it change, President Obama will point the way forward to real change that will boost the middle class and create a stronger future for all Americans.” The campaign is also up with a new TV ad that features Colin Powell’s interview on CBS endorsing the president. The ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. By the way, NBC’s Kristen Welker reports that before leaving on his campaign travel today, Obama will receive a briefing on the latest developments in the response to Sandy.
*** Romney’s closing argument: And back on the campaign trail yesterday in Florida, Mitt Romney restarted the closing argument he had been making over the last several days: change. “My view is pretty straight forward, and that is I believe that this is time for America to take a different course -- that this should be a turning point for our country,” he said, per NBC’s Garrett Haake. “And I say that because I look at where we are and with 23 million Americans – you think about that. These are real people. These are folks trying to put food on the table," Romney said. "Twenty-three million people struggling to find a good job. This is something that requires in my view a different path than we’ve been on." Yet Haake notes that Romney reined in his criticism of Obama yesterday as the president visited the hurricane damage in New Jersey. Meanwhile, the Romney camp is up with its own new TV ad. “Barack Obama says he might appoint a Secretary of Business,” the ad goes. “His solution to everything is to add another bureaucrat. Why not have a president who actually understands business?”

*** The year of the Senate women? When this election cycle began, it was VERY likely we were going to see fewer women in the next Senate. After all, Olympia Snowe and Kay Bailey Hutchison were retiring, and Claire McCaskill looked like a sure bet to go down to defeat. But now, it seems like the Senate will add to its female population. Not only is McCaskill now in better shape, but Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Debra Fischer (D-NE) are the favorites to win their contests. And then it’s very possible that Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Linda McMahon (R-CT), and Heather Wilson (R-NM) could win their races, too. It’s also worth noting that on the GOP side, its best-run Senate campaigns may all lose -- but they are all headed up by women candidates, Linda Lingle in HI, Wilson and McMahon. And it’s female candidates who may end up saving the Dems and ensuring their ability to stay in the majority: see Heitkamp and McCaskill.

TWO EXAMPLES of misleading information distributed by the Romney Campaign:
CLAIM: Page 8 lists 10 items as "The ONLY acceptable forms of "Proof of Residency".
FACT: The list is incomplete. There are many other documents people can use to prove residency that are not included, such as letters from public schools, student loan papers, correspondence with a Native American tribe in WI, vehicle registration, and food stamp correspondances. In addition, the list fails to mention that homeless voters may use an affidavit froma public or private social service agency as proof of residency.
CLAIM: If a handicapped voter is unable to come to the polls to vote, an assistant can deliver the ballot to the voter if the CEI verifies the elector's proof of residency.
FACT: Under Wisconsin law, the CEI (Chief Election Inspector) does not have to verify proof of residency so long as the voter is registered.
The Romney campaign knows that confusing & inaccurate information on Election Day slows down the voting process, discourages voters who wait in line, and drives down turnout. GOP voter suppression has been HUGE in this election cycle. Citizens have the legal right to vote. Election workers should be forwarding this right, not creating obstacles to voting. Forwarding disinformation is an attempt to eliminate our voices, inhibit progress and maintain the status quo.

The Needle Ain't Moving:
With five days left until Election Day, Republicans, Democrats and media pundits are all focusing on the polls. Republicans say their poll numbers are different from Democratic internal polls or national media polls. Unfortunately I cannot remember when team Romney told the truth, so I will stick with Real Clear Politics numbers and of course Nate Silver of 538 fame.
Let's be clear that polls are based on assumptions and there is "noise" or statistical error within the data and the outcomes are not always accurate. But it is fair to say that the poll numbers are not moving. That could be because approximately 40%+ of likely voters have already voted and there is a very small sliver of folks who are undecided.
In my opinion it takes a significant event to now move the needle. Certainly President Obama's poor performance in the first debate moved the needle toward Romney and it is likely that the October surprise of Hurricane Sandy is moving the needle toward President Obama. Governor Christie's positive comments regarding President Obama's leadership has not helped Romney one darn bit.
Barring some extraordinary event, I don't expect to see a shift in voter attitudes between now and Election Day. Romney will continue to lie about Jeep production workers being outsourced to China. The CEOs of Chrysler and GM will call him out as a liar, and President Obama will be working to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.
So might we already know the outcome of most of the battleground states? Probably, and for those who get all wrapped up in media hype, you need to get used to the idea that Barack Obama will be our President for four more years.

Romney wants to end FEMA? Hey, I've got a great idea! Let's abolish the Defense Department and stand down our national army. Each state can raise its own militia! Those states that wish to do so can privatize their armies. If New York or New Jersey gets attacked by a foreign army, their armies can repel the invaders on their own!
If the invaders advance inland to Pennsylvania, then that state's army can get involved. If Delaware or West Virginia is too small and too weak to defend itself, then so be it—they'll be occupied by the foreign army. If New Jersey feels threatened by an occupying army next door, it can always bomb Delaware.
This is a fantastic idea! Think of all the money we'd save by not having a national army, navy and air force. Why, we could shrink government to the size of a puddle. And it would be so much more efficient if each state had its own private army! Oh, happy day!

Note for WI voters: "The state’s photo ID law was indeed struck down and is not in place for this election, but for Wisconsin voters who want to register on Election Day, one of the possible proof of residency documents is an identification card that must have a photo on it. (Non-photo documents are also accepted, such as a bank statement or a pay stub.)"
Contrary to the "facts" in the Romney training document: In Wisconsin, felons may vote after completion of sentence, including parole, probation and payment of all fines.

We're almost there. It's either going to be another four years of President Barack Obama or a four-year term for Mitt Romney. The President's record is out there for anyone who wants to look, which tells you a lot about the low-intelligence crew that insists he doesn't have a record on which to run. Romney also has a record, but he disavows it repeatedly.
So, who supports a guy like Romney who runs away from reporters and refuses to release his tax returns? Who supports a guy who says, hey trust me, I'll tell you all about my plans, AFTER I'm in office. Who supports a guy who is either a serial liar or a guy who can't remember what he said yesterday?
Well, you'll find quite a sampling right here at First Read. Take Brianb re-reg, and profoundly damaged123, please. Both posters claim to be pro-life. They treasure the life of the unborn. Why, they'd carry a rapist's child to term if only they could. Yet, there's a hint of inconsistency. Brianb was so upset with a poster he wanted to go into combat with them so he could push them out of his trench to be exposed enemy fire. I'm hard-pressed to see a pro-life position there. As far as damaged123, this is the guy who tells us he's pro-life in one breath, and then tells us he takes his SUV to run people off the road. Perhaps you see the same inconsistency that I do.
Then there's Ben lotsanumbers. Ben seems to think that Romney's constant prevaricating really isn't all that bad. When asked whether he tolerates that kind of behavior in his children, Ben says he's taught his kids about god. The god I've read about says bearing false witness is ranked in the Top 10 list of No-no's. Maybe Ben missed that along with another admonition about speaking ill of others. Ben has no problem referring to a regular here, who shall remain nameless, as Feisty Dumbfux. Try as I might, I can't find any verse in the Bible that says that kind of stuff is OK.
Then there's Dean M, a master of persuasion. A recent graduate of the Beavis and Butthead School of Logic, Dean comes to these pages with such well-reasoned objections to the President as, "Obama sucks". Makes you want to vote for Romney this very moment, doesn't it?
The best for last. Kirk lotsanumbers. Think about the angst of the right wingers. Why won't President Obama release his transcripts? Well, for starters, he actually has a track record as President. Transcripts aren't going to change a thing. This college paper stuff really doesn't mean much, and there is no better proof than Kirk. Most lefties ignore this guy, because he takes what you said, butchers it, and takes you to task for saying something you never said.
Yesterday, in one of his flights from logic, he challenged Jack in Portsmouth to match pedigrees. I think he probably meant paper-documented background. You see, at some time or other Kirk has been a lawyer, a finance real estate executive, has advised on community finance, is somehow intimately connected with a hardware business, and to my horror, says he has fathered children. In any case, Kirk is able to identify arrogant lefties, because he knows the truth and they don't. He may know arrogance, but he sure as hell has no grasp of irony.
So about those pedigrees and actual performance. Kirk cannot spell, apparently finds punctuation distasteful, has no stomach for the rules of grammar and logic escapes his limited reach. All the pedigrees in the world aren't going to cure that.
There's your Romney supporters, and there's millions like 'em.

One of the causalities of political discourse is the language itself.George Orwell said political language often attempts “to make lies sound truthful . . . and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.“ I would submit that this description fits Mitt Romney as well as any politician I have ever observed.
He truly is the Etch A Sketch man. A man who in 1994 promised to be more of an advocate for gay rights than Teddy Kennedy, morphed into a "seriously conservative" pro-life candidates for the Republican nomination, morphed in recent weeks into a moderate. Words fail in trying to describe the scope and cynicism of his shape-shifting. We have simply become numb to it; so many lies for so many years by so many, that outrage is hard to summon.
But every now and then I see a phrase that cuts through the clutter and reminds me that there are still words left to describe Romney’s ploy, words that almost catch him red-handed in his attempted heist of reality. They come from Gualberto Ranieri, whose name is pleasing to the ear. He is head of corporate communications at Chrysler and has slammed Romney for his brazenly false, outrageous . . . well, let Ranieri say it, for Romney’s “unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments" in a last-minute Ohio campaign ad claiming Jeep is moving production to China.
Thank you, Ranieri, I think you have helped reclaim the language of political outrage.

If President Obama wins re-election, it will be a huge victory for the social media, who have learned particularly since the Iraq War, that the msm can't be trusted.
And as we move into the future, the younger generation knows nothing BUT the social media, and they are quite capable on their own to dig into the falsehoods of candidates and politicians.
Citizens United may have proved to matter little. Voter suppression may have proved to matter little. Racism made us more determined.

“It’s better to be lucky than good”
THAT old saying is Barry Obama’s political career history summarized in seven words.
Barry was fathered by a deadbeat Kenyan and raised by his mother’s relatives. He was lucky to not be shoved into foster homes like most orphans with deadbeat parents. He lucked into a Columbia University undergrad degree and a Harvard law degree, which the American public has been kept in the dark about how he got in and what grades he achieved. Again, lucky, not good.
He then distinguished himself with a record number of “present” votes as an Illinois state Senator. By not taking any public position on any issues he kept the slate clean for his 2008 “Hope and Change” nonsense that was swallowed by all the Obamabots. Again, lucky, not good.
His run for the US Senate was blessed by his moron opponent, Alan Keyes. Again, lucky, not good.
His 2008 run for President was his toughest challenge, not from the Republican’s, but, from Hillary. Ultimately, his “Hopey-changey” BS was swallowed by the Obamabots. Again, lucky, not good.
And his 2012 re-election campaign is benefitting from the luck factor of an opponent that is simply not a smooth-talking pol. That’s not to say Romney would not be a good President, it’s just acknowledging he doesn’t have the gift of being a BS pol like Barry whose only talent is giving a wonderful speech.
So, if Barry is re-elected next Tuesday, it will be proof of the saying “It’s better to be lucky than good”
Unfortunately, America is now in dire need of leadership that is GOOD, not just lucky.

We can only hope so. The GOPTP stale, male, pale crowd that refused to negotiate has been disastrous for this country. Why, they even managed to chase away their most qualified female GOPTP counterparts with their backward views on abortion and healthcare, leaving the parties female population comprised of empty-shell Stepford wives and programmable Fem-bots. In addition to voting Obama/Biden in this term, we could also use a healthy dose of competent women in Congress, regardless of party, willing to put forth an effort in moving the country forward, full steam ahead.

You're right JoeinAlbany, Christie is playing Obama like Charlie Daniels plays a fiddle. He knows he will get what he wants as long as he throws in a "good job" or two and as soon as he doesn't, Christie will let him have it. It won't be nicey nicey either. Right now they are dating. Christie will dump him like a hot potato as soon as he gets what he wants to make himself look good. When that is over, he is going to take his "class ring" back and all will be good.
And WCA, I am betting on Wednesday Thursday after the sting of the election sets in. Of course we will have to put up with all of the analysis of how the GOP stole the election intertwined with it first.

Well, Willard, that wouldn't be YOU! You don't understand that Jeep is considering manufacturing in China because making them here and shipping them is more costly than making them there. At the same time, US production and employment continues to increase.
Willard also doesn't understand that when you hire an executive, you thoroughly examine their credentials, history and finances. That's why the people of this country expect and demand disclosure, which you refused to do.
In his one and only stint as an elected official, he destroyed records upon leaving Massachusetts. Maybe that's why a poll on Tuesday gives Obama a whopping 31% lead there. Hardly an endorsement from his constituents.
Finally, Willard, being a 'successful businessman' involves more than taking inherited wealth and buying up companies, looting them, and laying off everyone.

Just my two cents on the state of the race:
It is gonna be CLOSE!!!! I think we see two camps among the polls right now...those leaning towards a turnout similar to or better for Democrats than 2008. And those that lean toward a turnout model similar to 2004. The answer likely lies in the middle. This will not be a blowout win for President Obama like 2008. Nor will this be a Romney blowout. And I see it all coming down to Ohio. Get your Red Bull, coffee, Mountain Dew, or whatever your caffeine of choice is ready for Tuesday night. I'm thinking it's going to be a late night!

I have to wonder just where this nation will be if Romney is elected ...what happens to social security...does it now just become a tax ? If so...what happens to all the money folks have paid into their personal social security for years ? It seems that Romney and Ryan are taking that away..and replacing it with what ? What of FEMA...if that is tossed as Romney has already said he would do....what happens to states that have hericanes and other natural problems to deal with..will they then be left in the cold..and our tax money used for the wealthy ? The only ones I can see benefiting form anything Romney and Ryan and the entire republican party are the wealthy with even more in tax cuts. n 2008, the Democrats had a 39-29 (D+10) advantage in hard party ID, and a 54-42 (D+12) advantage with leaners. In 2012 though, we're in the post-TEA party era. Republicans now show a 36-35 (R+1) hard party ID advantage, and a 49-46 (R+3) lead with leaners. This gives us a range of party ID swings from 2008, from R+11 to R+15.

After a good bit of Fox News watching last night, the one thing I was struck with, (and have been struck with for much of the last week), is how limited their coverage of the hurricane has been in favor of coverage of the supposed Benghazi coverup. I suspect that if you primarily use Fox News as your major news source, you really don't have much of an idea of just how bad the devastation along the northern Atlantic seaboard really is, which might partially explain the tenor of the right wing comments on the boards throughout the week.
I might be wrong about this. I certainly have been wrong about the reactions of the Americans to Fox News in the past, but I suspect in the aftermath of this, the credibility of Fox News as a credible news source might take a serious hit. As a major news source, you cannot simply ignore the biggest news story of the year, the one that will have largest and most long lasting impact on the lives of the most Americans and expect to maintain your stature in the future.
O'Reilly, Hannity, and Van Susteran should be ashamed of their performance. I'm not asking them to be non-biased, but I am expecting them to not behave like little children and stick their fingers in their ears when the story isn't to their liking. That doesn't even meet the admittedly poor standards of journalism that we've come to expect in the early 21st Century.

Why indeed? Its been over 3 weeks since Romney has answered any reporter on any questions. What he is he so afraid of? That he’ll once again put his foot in his mouth? Or worse that he has no idea what he’ll do in any given situation.
His answer or more specifically his campaign’s answer to the FEMA, was his standard, well of course I won’t shut it down, or something to that effect, no surprise there.
If he were elected, his main communication method would by pronouncement or edict. This is how government works, it won’t be perfect but there is no substitute it. Mr. Romney and the Tea Party’s answer to everything the government does for the people, is to privatize just about everything. That’s the way their friends and their uber wealthy patrons get rich and stay rich. They have plans to bleed the middle class and the poor for every last dime. They and their equally greedy friends have no understanding of the sorrow and pain the victims of this storm are enduring, add to that the number of people who are teetering on the edges financial disaster through health issues, a job loss or a reduction in work hours,
Yesterday, was a contrast not just in men, but their very souls and how they empathize with the unfortunate. Romney’s campaign made a midnight run to Walmart to make a $5000 purchase of basic supplies because they wanted to make a fake rally look like it was well attended and ‘donated’ supplies were plentiful for a photo opportunity. The President’s interaction both with the victims and Governor Christie showed real concern and interest in assisting in getting help there as soon as possible, his actions are not faked he genuinely cares.
Simply put Romney does not have what it takes to be President of ALL of the people.

What if you realized you were wrong? Mistaken? Misguided in your rhetoric? Would you have the stones to admit that error? Or would you double down on your 'belief', so deeply entrenched, that you are unwilling or unable to choke back the self loathing you surely must feel? Given the complete meltdown Rush Limbaugh appeared to be having yesterday, it simply can't be easy to go against the party line.

I hadn't heard about this--Rush went nuts over Christie's favorable comments about Obama? I truly think we're witnessing a seismic shift in the political landscape of America, particularly where the Republicans are concerned. They can't go any lower, so the only choice will be a significant split, with moderates and "reasonable" conservatives following a new leadership. Christie could just be that guy. On NPR this morning they talked to a woman who attended a Mitt the Twit rally yesterday, she stated that Governor Chris Christie did not have to be so zealous with his praise for the way that President Obama has responded and reacted to Hurricane Sandy and the needs of the people devastated by this tragedy in 4 states along the coast.
She thought that a simple "Thank you" would have been sufficient.

You would think that a major network would do its viewers a service by keeping them completely up to date on a very dangerous, deadly storm, but screw that, there's an election to be won. They have their priorities, and keeping the American people informed about a deadly storm ranks lower than spreading propaganda.

My take on the election Obama wins 275 WI, IA, NH, NV and VA. The House Democrats pick up 16 seats, this is up from my earlier projections. I can glady see the end of Tea Party power and perhaps sound individuals will begin to discuss and vote in lieu of obstruct. I am changing my call on the Senate due to Republican lunacy on social issues - The Senate Democrats lose two and gain one independent but hold to a 1 point advantage 51 seats. With a new mix perhaps the elected will address needed issues like, Tax increases and spending reform (Bowles Simpson), immigration reform (Dream act), Infrastructure repair, climate change etc.
I am spent listening to the networks, the pollsters. Disheartened by the fact that a potential president (in Romney) can change and flip flop positions, stay silent on his plans and specifics and morph from severely conservative to slightly moderate without backlash. Surprised that people can be so unwilling to see that a man so wishy washy should never set foot in a position where certainty and strength is needed. I am truly fearful that a true incompotent who changes his positions and beliefs based on his audience can become President.

Somehow, most of them have missed the fact that two of the major corporations most important to the economic well-being of America have called out Mitt Romney as a liar. In one example, KB Toys, that company had already undergone restructuring when Bain Capital came into the picture and destroyed the country's second-oldest toy retailer. KB Toys was nowhere near bankruptcy, and Bain's goal was not to help KB Toys but to destroy it. Bain did it for the cash (one hundred and twenty million dollars was the sum they took), and in the process fifteen thousand people lost their jobs.
Read the case histories of the companies Bain Capital was involved with. You are woefully misinformed. You ought to know what you're talking about before you open your mouth. Didn't your mother teach you that?

And the economic data today is terrible as compared to when Obama took office 4 years ago but where is the media telling the american people?

My reaction to posting here will be the same as yours only reversed....
As for the Jeep ads, I have been very consistent here in saying that the ads are not false. Fiat (Yes Fiat. I don't know why people keep saying Chrysler) is going to start building Jeeps in Beijing. There is a very legitimate reason for that. If they want to sell them in China, they have to build them in China.
So the ads are true. But with that being said, I admit they are misleading. All is fair in politics Mark, whether Sergio Marchionne likes it or not. Marchionne is covering his own ass. I don't blame him, so would I, but he isn't the first CEO to get used in a political campaign.
So I'll tell you what, I agree he should take down the misleading Jeep ads if Obama takes down and acknowledges all the misleading ads that he and his PACS have run.

The other evening on my twitter, a person asked me why I didn't like the Obama's? Specifically I was asked: "I have to ask, why do you hate the Obama's? It seems personal, not policy related. You even dissed (disrespect) their Christmas family picture."
The truth is I do not like the Obamas, what they represent, their ideology, and I certainly do not like his policies and legislation. I've made no secret of my contempt for the Obamas. As I responded to the person who asked me the aforementioned question, I don't like them because they are committed to the fundamental change of my/our country into what can only be regarded as a Communist state.
I don't hate them per definition, but I condemn them because they are the worst kind of racialists, they are elitist Leninists with contempt for traditional America. They display disrespect for the sanctity of the office he holds, and for those who are willing to admit same, Michelle Obama's raw contempt for white America is transpicuous.
I don't like them because they comport themselves as emperor and empress. I expect, no I demand respect, for the Office of President and a love of our country and her citizenry from the leader entrusted with the governance of same. President and Mrs. Reagan displayed an unparalleled love for the country and her people. The Reagan's made Americans feel good about themselves and about what we could accomplish. Obama's arrogance by appointing 32 leftist czars and constantly bypassing congress is impeachable. Eric Holder is probably the MOST incompetent and arrogant DOJ head to ever hold the job. He has lied about his father's military service, about the civil rights movement, ad nausea. He lied to the world about the Supreme Court in a State of the Union address. He berated and publicly insulted a sitting Congressman. He has surrounded himself with the most rabidly, radical, socialist academicians today. He opposed rulings that protected women and children that even Planned Parenthood did not seek to support. He is openly hostile to business and aggressively hostile to Israel. His wife treats being the First Lady as her personal American Express Black Card (arguably the most prestigious credit card in the world). I condemn them because, as people are suffering, losing their homes, their jobs, their retirements, he and his family are arrogantly showing off their life of entitlement - as he goes about creating and fomenting class warfare.
I don't like them, and I neither apologize nor retreat from my public condemnation of them and of his policies. We should condemn them for the disrespect they show our people, for his willful and unconstitutional actions pursuant to obeying the Constitutional parameters he is bound by, and his willful disregard for Congressional authority.
Dislike for them has nothing to do with the color of their skin; it has everything to do with their behavior, attitudes, and policies. And I have open scorn for their constantly playing the race card.
It is my intention to do all within my ability to ensure their reign is one term. I could go on, but let me conclude with this. I condemn in the strongest possible terms the media for refusing to investigate them, as they did President Bush and President Clinton, and for refusing to label them for what they truly are. There is no scenario known to man, whereby a white president and his wife could ignore laws, flaunt their position, and lord over the people, as these two are permitted out of fear for their color.
As I wrote in a syndicated column titled, "Nero In The White House" - "Never in my life, inside or outside of politics, have I witnessed such dishonesty in a political leader. I'd like to know who at the White House ordered our forces to 'stand down' (not try to rescue the Ambassador) during the attack in Benghazi that lasted for SEVEN HOURS. The attack was watched in the White House with drones flying overhead (possibly armed, but the Democrats refuse to confirm or deny since questions would be asked about why any missles weren't used to help the Americans under attack)

The states rights topic has got us into trouble before (see Civil War.) This kind of thinking doesn't make sense with the military as you so eloquently discuss. Neither does it make sense with social programs like FEMA. Or with education or health care.
How would these programs work if the rules changed at every state border? How would one be able to get an education in one state and a job in another? How would the interests of the nation as a whole be served by being forced to deal with the specific regulations of each state?
Europe recognized these problems by forming the EU. As troubled as that has been, it shows that uniting rather than dividing is the right way.
We are the UNITED states, not the individual ones.
Please direct me to a poll (any poll) where Obama has 'advanced' in the last few months! All I see is positive momentum for Romney and either no change or decline for Obama week after weeek after week.

First I can't help but wonder why you are not asking the same of the folks who constantly accuse Romney of lying without any attempt at offering examples. Do you believe it is ok to call one man a liar without backing it up but it is wrong to do the same of the other man?
Second, once the election is over and the media are finally willing to look into the concerns over the Benghazi debacle I think there will be a lot of people eating crow. Of all the posts in this thread yours and Ivan's are the most, well, scary to me. Yours because you equate private equity investing in turnaround opportunites, some of which went bust, with the government shoveling money to private businesses, some of which also went bust. Why is that a scary comparison? Because you seem not to understand, or care if you do understand, that having money thrown at you makes it far harder to go bankrupt--I mean these firms had to be VERY bad for them, after hundreds of millions of our dollars being given to them, to STILL go bankrupt.
There is even a more foundational reason to fear your way of thinking: It either denies or is oblivious to the basic business premise of the free market, which is that failure is necessary for success to be realized. Please don't twist my words here. I'm not arguing failure is success. The point is that without the ability of firms to fail then no one can be successful. Why work harder or innovate more if you won't be allowed to fail? And this is the real tragedy of the continuing government policy of picking business winners amd losers.
The left constantly complains about cronyism, and yet fully supports every policy which leads to it. In the process the poor and working class are made more poor and less working class. You might not comprehend this point given your earlier post, but because the government has hundreds of billions to hand out (the vast majority of which hasn't a scintilla of constitutional authority) firms will gladly do whatever they can to get a piece of that pie. Thaty money comes from you, me, others. In every case it produces less wealth than it consumed to fund those programs to give money to these firms. So we become less wealthy as a whole, but those who finance politicians seem to gain more and more.
The better, and I would argue more liberal, position, would be to want far less government so that more people can have more of their own money, creating their own wealth, living their own self-directed lives. But this isn't the ideology of the modern liberal party in the USA. Leftists would say I want the poor to whither on the vine and die, but this too would be false. There are just far better ways to accomplish the goal of charity than to make the entire nation less wealthy in the process.
Oh, Ivan's post is scary because he fundamentally fails to comprehend Social Security. Ivan wants his money, but SS was never designed to give you back your money. If it had been, you could have simply had your own private account and be forced to invest in only US treasuries. The goal was always to get money to the government from the people in a way that the people would conclude was a worthwhile deal. Couple this (among other failures of SS) with its stark racist outcomes and I'd say that not only should SS be reformed from the ground up but that we should seriously wonder about liberal supporters' claims of egalitarianism in support of it.

Romney is defeated...today's polls show he is losing ground in Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia. These are all states that Romney needs if Ohio is even going to make any difference. Romney is also behind in Colorado, and Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada this morning. Thus, he has no route to 270 left.
If Virginia and New Hampshire go Obama on election night, it could all be over by 8:00pm EST. Even if not, Florida and Ohio would have to both go to Romney and he would have to hold Virginia and North Carolina.
Now set aside the fact that Mitt Romney has not made a clear, convincing case that he deserves to be President, and offers nothing but a return to the Bush trainwreck, and he is undeserving of this election. He went too far right, and now cannot claim the middle ground without looking like the flip flopper that he really is. It's not always "private equity investing in turnaround opportunities". In the example of KB Toys, Bain Capital bought a company (mostly with borrowed money, not with investor capital) which debt they then transferred onto the books of KB Toys. Bain then closed half the stores, leaving KB Toys unable to earn the revenue it needed to repay the debt.
Bain Capital took one hundred and twenty million dollars out of KB Toys as a 'management fee' while adding so much debt to the books that the company was forced into bankruptcy. Bain had no intention of 'rescuing' KB Toys. Their intention was simply to milk the company for every penny they could take. KB Toys' creditors sued Bain Capital for looting the company and leaving everyone else holding the bag. Romney's reputation as a turnaround specialist is a lie. Bain Capital made money whether the firms they took over succeeded or not. No risk to their investors at all.

After all the National debt incresed every year Clinton was in office. How can there be a surplus AND additional debt increase???

"Split decision"?? I give him the benefit of the doubt for the few days following the incident and I have made no judgement regarding what could have or should have been done during the attack or in the weeks and months preceding it. There are still too many unanswered questions to be critical of the President for that. What I am specifically talking about is weeks after the fact when the President refers to the video numerous times. We know now that he had to have known there was no protest by then, the State Department has said there was NEVER any evidence to support the claim that it was a "spontaneous" protest that was hijacked by extremists. There never was a single source with evidence that there was a protest (they had the video from the security feed as the attack was happening) so clearly the "piecing together" involved some pieces that were never a part of the puzzle.
Technically you are correct, I don't know that the President intentionally mislead anyone BUT the alternative, that weeks later he didn't still didn't know that the video had nothing to do with the attack, is tantamount to gross incompetence. I give the man more credit than that so I am left with nothing but an intentional attempt to mislead the public and the world. Intentionally misleading the public, gross incompetence OR???? Is there another explanation??

Interestingly, Clinton's average Debt increase was almost twice that under Reagan, and Obama's average Debt increase has been almost three times that under G W Bush. Why did the Obama administration persist with the insane Youtube video pretext for weeks? Information is coming out now that those Americans who perished in Benghazi had desperately requested support that could have saved their lives and instead they were ordered to "stand down". Obama now claims that he issued the order to support those individuals, yet this obviously was not done. Either there's a serious incompetence that prevented this presidential "order" from being carried out, or (much more likely) Obama is now lying about having issued such an order. For the sake of their own credibility, Democratic politicians need to join their Republican colleagues in asking genuine questions about how the Obama administration mishandled what happened in Benghazi.
My analysis indicates that the election hinges on just two States - Ohio and Wisconsin. Obama must win both States, while Romney only has to win one of them.
According to Rasmussen (see Post #1.138 for pollster accuracy), Romney is ahead by 2% in Ohio and they are tied in Wisconsin.
In just a few days, we will separate the REAL pollsters from the 'spin-sters'. The reason I trust Rasmussen and Gallup the most is they have reputations on the line, whereas the media driven polls (NBC, CBS, FOX, etc.) will never report on their 'busted polls'.

Consider this- after the 9/11 attacks private individuals came together to help evacuate people from NYC and it went off without a hitch; After Katrina FEMA stepped in to help with the evacuations and it was a cluster @!$%#. Arguable they caused as much harm as they did good. Sent people to areas worse off then they were to begin with, gave people toxic trailers to live in, misappropriated resources, the list just goes on and on.

Per the top post, it has been interesting hearing about what the Romney guys have been up to behind the scenes. A few weeks ago we find out that Romney held conference calls with business owners, encouraging them to tell their employees how to vote. That ended up with said owners issuing memos to their employees saying that if Obama wins, they could lose their jobs. Now we hear that his campaign is trying to raise an army of citizen poll watchers. Since these citizens would have no idea who is eligible to vote or not, their contribution to the Romney campaign would be simply to cause trouble and create confusion at the polls.

Not screwing up allows the incumbent to appear be both Presidential and bi-partisan, a leader in a crisis. Disasters tend to make Americans "rally 'round the flag", and if the executive and their agencies do not exacerbate the crisis, people notice. The national polls will probably swing the incumbent's way over the next few days on this basis, based on previous reactions to competent handling of national disasters...
If you are the challenger, this is the last thing you wanted to see happen during the final days of the campaign, especially if one of your central themes has been about "leadership", and the lack thereof from the incumbent.
It's still about O-H-I-O and it will be until Wednesday...there are other states that the MSM will highlight to break the monotony, but it will come down to O-H-I-O...

A vote for the future or for the past?

The 2012 presidential election is fundamentally a contest between our future and our past. Barack Obama’s America is the America that will be; Mitt Romney’s is the America that was. And the distance between the two is greater, perhaps, than in any election we’ve had since the Civil War.
The demographic bases of the rival coalitions couldn’t be more different. Monday’s poll from the Pew Research Center is just the latest to show Obama with a decisive lead (in this case, 21 percentage points) among voters younger than 30. Obama’s margin declines to six points among voters ages 30 through 44, and he breaks even with Romney among voters ages 45 through 64. Romney’s home turf is voters 65 and older; among those, he leads Obama by 19 points.
Nor is age the only metric through which we can differentiate our future from our past. The other is race, as the nation grows more racially diverse (or, more bluntly, less white) each year. While the 2000 Census put whites’ share of the U.S. population at 69.1 percent, that share had declined to 63.7 percent in the 2010 Census, while the proportion of Hispanics rose from 12.5 percent to 16.3 percent. In raw numbers, total white population increased by just 1.2 percent during the decade, while the African American segment grew by 12.3 percent and the Hispanic share by 43 percent. Demographers predict that the white share of the U.S. population will fall beneath 50 percent in the 2050 Census.
Rather than trying to establish a foothold among America’s growing minorities, however, Romney and the Republicans have decided to forgo an appeal to Hispanic voters by opposing legislation that would grant legal status to undocumented immigrants brought here as children and by backing legislation that effectively requires Hispanics to carry documentation papers in certain states. Republicans seek a majority through winning an ever-higher share of white voters. The Washington Post reported last week that its polling showed the greatest racial gap between the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates since the 1988 election, with Romney favored by 60 percent of white voters and Obama by 80 percent of minority voters (a figure that may prove low, if three-quarters of the Hispanic vote goes to Obama, as some other polls suggest it will). The problem for Republicans, of course, is that the minority vote is a far larger share of the total vote today than it was 24 years ago.
By repeatedly estranging minorities and opposing social policies favored by the young, the Republicans have opted for a King Canute strategy: standing on the shore and commanding the tide to stop. Republicans with an eye toward the future, most notably George W. Bush and Karl Rove, have urged the party to embrace immigration reform, but the base is rabidly anti-immigrant and its antipathy is reinforced daily by talk radio hosts and Fox News chatterers who depict an America under siege by alien forces.
Accommodation with diversity and modernity, however, is simply not part of the Republican DNA. Today’s Republican Party has largely cornered the market on religious fundamentalists, even as the number of GOP scientists has dwindled (a 2009 Pew poll of scientists found that just 6 percent self-identified as Republicans, while 55 percent said they were Democrats). Many of the largest Republican funders come from economic sectors hardly distinguished by significant productivity increases or their contributions to mass prosperity (casino gambling, Wall Street), while Silicon Valley remains more Democratic turf. (By the way, all those messages Republican CEOs have been sending their employees, predicting layoffs should Obama be reelected? Have any of them promised raises if Romney wins? Just askin’.)

Analysis: This is the first day in several that has not included any tossup states, but unfortunately for Governor Romney supporters the movement was all into the president's column. None of the movement actually changed the outcome from yesterday, but since the governor has been fighting an uphill battle for awhile, any movement backward for him is devastating at this point. The task for the governor last week was to solidify his hold on the states that he held at that point and then to strip away one or more of the All O states. What we've seen instead is how tenuous his hold on the states that I had in his column actually was.
Bear in mind that Silver's 538 poll gives the president a better than average chance to take Virginia, as do most of the other aggregator sites, which means that as of now, my analysis is probably the most favorable result for Romney that exists in the current state of affairs.
Yesterday's set of polls was probably the most devastating single day of polling for Romney during the entire general election. There were 15 polls listed on RCP's site for the battleground states. Romney held a lead in only 4 of them. 2 of those were in Florida, which I already listed for him. Another was in Virginia, which I already listed for him as well. The final one was in Iowa, which was counteracted by two subsequent polls that showed larger leads for the president.
The reason that yesterday was so devastating for Romney is that we are now less than a week before the election and the window for him to change the structure of the race is closing rapidly, if it isn't already closed. At this point, the right wing is sort of reduced to hoping that their claims about the methodological deficiencies of the polling process 2012 that have started to crop up again in recent days, (a sort of visible tell that they realize their candidate is losing), have been correct all along.
All in all, given the president's strong performance during the hurricane and the fact that Romney seems to have metaphorically slipped back down the hill a little over the first three days of the week, it is difficult to seem him overcoming all of the structural barriers that face him at this late date.

Romney's structural advantage in Florida was much stronger: 7:2:1.
So it's difficult to really say whether the previous polling period was really just more advantageous for Romney and the race has closed or whether the president has simply gotten a set of better polls, (by virtue of the polling agencies or whatever), for him in the more recent one. We can, however, clearly see the race in Florida looks tighter in the few days.
But I don't base the analysis on which way I think it's moving... only the way it currently is at the moment.
And Romney wins the election by a LANDSLIDE.... voters claim they have had enough "Hope & Change" that resulted in no hope & less change (left in their pockets)....
Michael Thompson: the Republicans are starting to get really worried about Florida. What they had thought was a lock on voters over the age of 60 is falling apart. Between lying to them about Medicare, failing to show proper leadership in a crisis and trying to destroy the country, the GOP in Congress have left many voters wondering why anyone would vote for them.
Now President Obama has shown what a real leader does. And the Democratic members of Congress have show they know how to govern, not just rule.

n 2008, the Democrats had a 39-29 (D+10) advantage in hard party ID, and a 54-42 (D+12) advantage with leaners. In 2012 though, we're in the post-TEA party era. Republicans now show a 36-35 (R+1) hard party ID advantage, and a 49-46 (R+3) lead with leaners. This gives us a range of party ID swings from 2008, from R+11 to R+15.

There's a definite problem when you ignore the dozens of legitimate polls and put all your faith into 1 or 2 biased polls!
The GOP has been chanting they are all about business, and their candidate knows more about business, but then they prove by their actions they don't know what to do with the data.
Many small businesses fail every year, not because there isn't enough credible information, but because they choose to ignore the numbers.
The pollsters who are working the numbers are gambling that if their polls, which are a lot different than the average polls turn out somehow to be right, then they stand to make millions.
In other words, there isn't a lot of money to be made by shouting, "Me too, me too, me too!"

Ok, let's not talking about altering speeches and videos. Time and Time again on Hannity show he has done this to make President Obama look bad. Jaun Williams had to call Sean Hannity out for that several times, telling Sean why is only showing a part of the speech and not the whole speech.

Since Republicans want to make a big deal about the newspapers that endorsed President Obama in 2008 but are now endorsing Mr. Romney, I it's worth pointing out that these editors apparently now find Mr. Romney's zen-like mastery of the flip-flop to be some kind of a virtue.

Leaders are tested during difficult times and President Obama's performance during Huricane Sandy should make us all proud, regardless of party affiliation. Both Christie and Obama raised to the occasion showing that they can lead. I'm no fan of Christie's lack of finesse but his ability to react in an emergency situation is remarkable. President Obama showed us that he is willing to work for the whole country, not the chosen few. That's what presidents are for, to work for us, not against us.

He was able to get people in Ohio to donate several hundred cans of food to be used to feed the approximately 7 million people in New England that do not have power, thus personally demonstrating how private relief efforts can be more effective than those of "big" government.

It does seem kind of absurd, considering that Manhatten alone would use more food and fresh water per day, and would generate more waste to be hauled out, even if there was no disaster. And that's not even considering all those people on the Jersey Shore.
Lucky for everyone affected by Sandy that Romney is looking at the big picture and collecting cans of food.
Still, since the POTUS showed up with FEMA and some US Navy helicopter carriers, Romney had to one up him and show how much better private relief efforts would work, if only Obama had the common sense to disband and contract out useless big government cost centers such as FEMA, and run government like a business.

I respectfully disagree about your assessment of Tommy Thompson. His welfare to work program became a model for the entire country. He also founded the current BadgerCare medicaid health program that is in use today that provides first rate medical care for the poor and working poor. The Democrats (mostly Liberals) hated him because he kept a tight reign on spending. Often he told the Democrat controlled legislature no and they did not like that. Tammy Baldwin is flaky at best and certainly not someone who will accurately represent all the people in Wisconsin. She has the teachers and unions backing her so they can pass their own favorable legislation and not what is good for this state and this country.
PS To FED-UP, I do not have to hide and watch as the good people are taking back control of this state from the special interest who only think about what they are getting. Come election day you will see a ground swell of support rise up in favor of Thompson just like it happened with Walker. Wisconsin Republicans are the ones blocking a laws that would make it illegal for donations to come from outside a district or our state. If you can't vote for a candidate, you shouldn't be able to buy their election. Unfortunately, the Fitzgeralds block this and will not even allow a vote on it because Republicans raise most of their campaign money from outside of Wisconsin.

ADP reported that they changed how they calculate jobs. That is why they lowered their jobs number for September.
The fact they are just started using a new formula and October numbers are that strong is a sign of gains.
