Obama and Christie's shared praise far from unusual

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and President Obama talk after flying over damaged communities and talking with residents, saying they are determined to rebuild as quickly as possible.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has adamantly insisted that presidential politics are the furthest thing from his thoughts during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, though that hasn’t stopped some from filtering his praise for President Barack Obama through a political prism.

The pugnacious New Jersey governor, who supports Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney over Obama this fall (and delivered the keynote address at Romney’s nominating convention), has heaped effusive praise on Obama’s handling of Hurricane Sandy, the massive superstorm to wreak havoc in the northeast, and especially the Jersey Shore.

Larry Downing / Reuters

President Barack Obama and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie talk with survivors of Hurricane Sandy in a community center while touring damaged areas in Brigantine, New Jersey, October 31, 2012.

“I want to thank the president for coming here today. It's really important to have the president of the United States acknowledge all the suffering that's going on here in New Jersey and I appreciate it very much,” Christie said this afternoon as he and Obama toured the devastation. “We're going to work together to make sure we get ourselves through this crisis and get everything back to normal.”

Obama was similarly complimentary, telling people at the Brigantine community center that Christie, who is up for re-election next year in deep-blue New Jersey, “is working overtime to make sure that as soon as possible everybody can get back to normal.”

The two appeared together, along with the New Jersey congressional delegation, following their tours to give similar remarks on camera.

Mitt Romney has continued to push full-speed ahead with his campaign in the battleground state of Florida this morning. The president's campaign team is charting the political course ahead while he tours some of the worst damage in New Jersey. Jen Psaki, Obama traveling press secretary, discusses.

The mutual praise is an outgrowth of both leaders’ handling of a natural disaster, but it coincides with a crucial juncture in the presidential campaign, with just days to go until Election Day. Obama is trying to preserve an advantage in swing states as Romney barnstorms the country in an effort to subsume the incumbent president.

Christie rebuffed suggestions on Tuesday that there were political implications to his work with the administration.

"I've got 2.4 million people out of power. I've got devastation on the shore. I've got floods in the northern part of my state,” he said on Fox News. “If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics then you don't know me."

And the Romney campaign gave Christie a pass for his work with Obama on Wednesday, dismissing a question about whether the GOP nominee was annoyed by the New Jersey governor’s praise for the president.

“Gov. Christie's doing his job. He's the governor of the state that's been hit by a very, very horrific storm,” Romney adviser Russ Schriefer said in a conference call with reporters. “He's doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing as governor of New Jersey. And the president is doing what he needs to be doing as president.”

That won’t necessarily stop observers from searching for political implications in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, especially so close to Nov. 6.

“I am hesitant to kind of make political calculations about the impact of an event that resulted in the deaths of 50 people and the loss of $50 billion in property,” senior Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod said on a separate conference call this morning. “This was a disaster of huge proportions, and the president is doing what his responsibilities require -- and that includes going to New Jersey, as is what he's done in the case of every major disaster during the course of his presidency, to offer the support of the people of our country, to tour the scene himself, to speak firsthand with the first responder and the elected officials at the scene.”

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.

Obama will return to the campaign trail on Thursday after canceling three days’ worth of political events. And Romney on Wednesday was mostly tentative in attacking Obama, opting instead for a softer tone and words of encouragement for recovery efforts in the northeast.

Axelrod suggested that the storm essentially washed out several days of campaigning, during which point there was no movement in the jockeying between Romney and the president.

“Wherever you think this race is, it tended to freeze the race because people are focused on the storm,” he said. “That's what's been in the news; normally the election would have been in the news. So I think it's fair to say that that is the case.”

But as a series of polls suggest Romney is trailing in some battleground states, those days might also be crucial opportunities lost.

What kind of profit margins does Mittwit have in mind for privatized disaster relief?

So when a whole state is wiped out by a natural disaster, how exactly is that wiped out state supposed to handle command and control for its own relief efforts Mr. Romney?

It's called readiness. The policies and procedures would be in place and emergency communication would be first and foremost. Need I remind all of you libs once again, FEMA is nothing but a figurehead and concentration point for a lot of private contractors coming to help. Not to mention the inflated dollars they receive for being on the ready to respond.

I see that Barack Obama dressed up like a president for Halloween. Even had the same old "I am on your side" quotes for the 1%'ers that live on the coast he toured with Governor Christie. "No red tape, No beaurocracy and I have ordered a 15 minute rule that no call from states, counties, or cities will go unanswered for more than 15 minutes". And Romney is the only one still playing politics? He has said the same thing no less than four times over the last two days when in front of a camera. Almost like he had a teleprompter. I can see him on AF1 repeating it over and over and over so he wouldn't forget.

I would really like to see the results of records on those not over 15 minutes calls after this is over. Typical liberal, because I dream, say, believe, it will be so. What a maroon (misspelling on purpose). If you buy it people and think it will be so, well, good luck. They may get call backs but it will be of a "form letter" type to assure them that he is "on it".

And like I said before, this is not the first natural disaster the president has had to deal with. Last year republicans tried to hold up relief efforts with upfront offsets for emergency spending. I suppose that is preferable to you. Or how about Bush's response to Katrina? Let's just turn all relief efforts around at the state line. It's hardly the first time president Obama has acted presidential. Bush couldn't pull it off once in 8 years.

I've been thinking about how badly W would have screwed up this storm disaster by now and seeing as how Romney is hiring every Bush employee he can find, particularly in foreign affairs and economics, I'm waiting for him to announce that he's going to hire Brownie to take over FEMA again.

Hey owen, short memory huh? The reason for Katrina slow response was the fact that the mayor of NO and the Governor of the state failed to follow protocol for ASKING for intervention and help (and did WAY too late). Both Democrats, they felt they had the best solution and could handle it. Next talking point please.

Things may have been better if the Mayor and the Governor had asked FEMA for help sooner. Also if they would have ordered a mandatory evacuation when the they were warned 2 days before Katrina hit some of those people who died may have been saved. Don't forget that the Federal Gov't can't do anything until an emergency is declared by the Local Governments.

Once again he would empower the states to be ready on their own, much like they are now. They have to ask as is protocol. And once again (since you have a comprehension problem) FEMA is a figurehead for a LOT of private contractors to come together and help. On a state level, it would work much the same way. Line them up and make them committ to being ready to answer to the call. Much like a volunteer fire department exept on a much larger scale. At a state level, it would probably cost a lot less. Contractors have a tendency to charge the FEDS a hell of a lot more simply because it is..............wait for it..................the FEDS.

By the time Katrina reached NOLA, it had diminished to a Category 3 hurricane. The city rode out the storm just fine, but the decrepit levies could not handle the increased water levels of Lake Ponchartrain and the canals. As for blame, no one distinguished themselves. However, given the magnitude of the catastrophe, it's ridiculous to imply that Bush and Brownie would have been fine if only Ray Nagin had picked up the phone.

BS pk. Pure BS and I believe it went from 5 to 4 to 3 once inland. They got the warning as a cat 5 two days before. That should have been enough knowing the city was well below sea level.

And it wasn't only Nagin, the Governor should have over ruled that pompous ass and made the call. After all, NO is in Louisiana.

im in nj and the visit by the prez and governor christie was a huge lift for everyone.

I just got off another post where the pubs were telling me i should have washed off into the ocean or drunk my obama koolaid for help. I was shocked at the insensitivity and mean-spiritedness.

The thought of romney being in charge in a situation like this is frightening. President Obama has been all over this since before the storm struck, and help is pouring in from all over (which is very comforting after watching the Atlantic pouring in). The most immediate need is to get the power up again, I have friends and family stuck up in high rises with no power, no water and it's cold. There's no elevators, but even if they took the stairs they cant go out because the water surrounding them is loaded with sewage and electrical wires. The good news is the National Guard is there and is getting people out building by building. It's slow going, as it's hard for the elders to take getting down all those stairs......

I grew up in NJ. Everything that is beloved to myself and my family and lifelong friends is GONE. It is surreal. We are grateful we are alive, and understand that is the most important of all things. The governor, the president, FEMA, the National Guard, have been swift in their response. I've heard workers from power companies all over the country are coming, and we need them. Too much work to do, the more the better.

Please pray for the people who are stuck and cant get out. Please pray for those whose homes have literally disappeared from the face of the earth. On the other post, pubs told me that most of the people who lost their homes were part of the 1% and could financially rebuild....not true, hundreds of thousands of ordinary people with ordinary homes are now homeless.....their cars are gone or submerged.....the buildings their jobs are in are devastated....the kids's schools need to be repaired or rebuilt.....

I believe Christie and Obama came together to do their jobs and to help the people of NJ and the other states who are suffering. Politicize it all you want, it's what people need. We are grateful they are teamed up. For those obama haters who took the opportunity to attack me at a time like this, I say thank you for showing your true colors, romney would be proud of you. To those who have responded with kindness and compassion, thank you, truly.

I'm proud to be a dem, and confident of the leadership the President will provide for the next 4 years.

Anybody else see Romney performing for the cameras at the fake food distribution photo-op?

Romney picked up a couple of cases of water and handed it to someone else.

Job well done Romney!

Reminded me of the fake pot scrubbing the Ryan did a while back. Hilarious. If you haven't seen the full video, don't miss that one. Heelarious!

But back to Romney's fake food distribution photo-op, it was supposed to be to benefit the Red Cross, but anyone who knows anything at all about the Red Cross knows that they don't want cases of bottled water, they want CASH.

The bottled water and canned food drives are for local emergencies for the most part.

In fact, giving cans of food and cases of bottled water is actually a burden for the Red Cross when they are trying to deal with a regional or national disaster.

I guess Romney hasn't ever helped out in a disaster before, if he had, he would know that.

Which is odd, because when he was Governor of Mass, there was a disaster about 3 miles from his house, but he didn't even drop by.

    #56.6 - Wed Oct 31, 2012 10:43 PM EDT

Get off it owen. You are discredited. As for you Brainlacking, I love Christie. He isn't obnoxious and insensitive. He tells it like it is and most people don't want to hear it. It gives them a wake up call they don't think they need when indeed if they would listen, they really do. But you don't have to make the fat jokes, demean the man when it seems suitable and you DON'T need him to be a leader, and then turn around in the same paragraph and deem him a saint. That in itself is hypocritical at its lowest form. You like what he is doing or you don't. He has the state's best interest in mind every minute of every day from what I see and you can't pick and choose and support one day and disrespect the next. He has shown his integrity from the very beginning. Some just can't take the truth.

Yep they also forget these facts.

DO YOU REMEMBER JANUARY 3, 2007?

I've been saying this for years, but this probably explains it
      better and more clearly.

Remember that on October 9, 2007, 11 months before our "economic crisis" occurred (that was actually created), the Dow hit its highest point ever, closing at 14,164.53 and reaching 14,198.10 intra-day level 2 days later. Unemployment was steady at 4.7%. But things were already being put in place to create the havoc we've all been experiencing since then. And it all started, as this email explains, on January 3, 2007. --LFL

I'm sending this to each of you regardless of your party preferences
because I believe it is something you may not have considered.

This tells the story, why Bush was so "bad" at the end of his term.

Don't just skim over this, it's not very long, read it slowly and let
it sink in. If in doubt, check it out!!!

The day the Democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009, it was
actually January 3rd 2007, which was the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.

The Democrat Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the
first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy
that everything is "Bush's Fault", think about this: January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress.

      At the time:
The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
      The Unemployment rate was 4.6%
George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB GROWTH

      Remember the day...
January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee. The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy? BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!

Unemployment... to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOES!

Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie - starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the US economy.

And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie? OBAMA and the Democrat Congress.

So when someone tries to blame Bush. REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007....THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!"

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democrat Party.

Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.

In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush
entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running
until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a
massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009.

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the
last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five
years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After
that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that
includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself. In a
nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted
for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since
      January 20th.

Gas prices!!!??? Really! Who are you? Bachmann? Gas was that low in Jan 09' because the stock market crashed. 6 months earlier gas was over $4.50/gal. Credit rating? Well look to the report that credit rating agencies put out in respect to our credit rating being lowered. They put the blame on republicans and their talk of default just to default. They talked about the unwillingness of the right to work out a reasonable economic plan with the president. They are not in favor of the policies being proposed by the GOP. They are in favor of the presidents policies but specifically point to right-wing opposition to get what's needed done. You can't make a point by selectively choosing your facts.

Also you can't talk about Bush's deficit being that the wars were never factored into government spending. The cost of these wars wasn't included in the budget or deficit spending until Obama came into office. By that time we had 7 years of spending on two wars that was never accounted for.

Yes! How quickly we do forget.

Spinning?! Really? You go check it out. Pull up some news articles from between July 08' and Jan 09'. Everything I mentioned was highly publicized news at the time. Hell, I'll help you...

      usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/2011-04-14-gas-prices-near-record.htm

the U.S. military has largely paid for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through emergency spending measures, in effect keeping wartime costs off the books. In addition to masking skyrocketing budget growth at the Department of Defense, this process has allowed the services to treat budget supplementals as a piggy bank for new procurement. Members of Congress may have grumbled about poor oversight, but they have largely acquiesced.

      Obama’s message? Not anymore.

"That is why this budget looks ahead ten years and accounts for spending that was left out under the old rules – and for the first time, that includes the full cost of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan," he said. "For seven years, we have been a nation at war. No longer will we hide its price."

That's your problem you read news reports as facts. The media is just a liberal spin tank. Go research the facts or put your head back in the dark spot to hide.

This is the PERFECT time for Romney to explain to the American people (and the residents of the states affected by Sandy) how the the states could pay for their own disaster relief. In the immortal words of Judge Smails..."Welllll...we're WAITING"

Anybody else see Romney performing for the cameras at the fake food distribution photo-op?

Romney picked up a couple of cases of water and handed it to someone else.

          Job well done Romney!

Reminded me of the fake pot scrubbing Ryan did a while back.

Today was a very telling day for this election in several ways.

We witnessed on one hand, the grown-ups putting aside politics and taking care of our fellow Americans as best as possible through bipartisan co-operation in a time of disaster. My hat is off to both Gov. Christie and our President for this.

On the other hand, we also saw an irrelevant Romney being both exposed for his fake "support" effort yesterday and his blatant lies about Jeep shipping jobs to China.

The true character of both Obama and Romney could not have been more clearly displayed than it was today.

On a personal note... I could not have enjoyed anything more than listening to Limbaugh have a freaking stroke today trying to spin reality into even more hate to his brain dead minions.

It was a good day for Americans who truly care about America. For Romney... not so much.

I have read news articles claiming that “nobody predicted” this historic tidal water rise.

Perhaps they should check into the episode of the Weather Channel’s TV program

“It Can Happen Here”, entitled “What if a hurricane struck NYC?”.

In that program, produced several years ago (which admittedly describes the effects of a much stronger hurricane in a somewhat sensationalistic fashion), geology Professor David Coch (of New York City’s Queens College) very accurately and precisely predicted the devastating consequences to NYC that would be produced by a hurricane taking the track that Sandy took,.... especially with regard to potential tidal flooding.

In that program, Professor Koch outlines the fact that we have an “L” shaped coastline, with the corner of the “L” being NY Harbor. Therefore, any hurricane coming inland into the New Jersey coast to our south, as Sandy did, would cause strong winds and waves to come in from the southeast off the ocean. This would push enormous amounts of water into the corner of the “L” (that is, into New York harbor), as well as -at the same time- pushing sea water surges down Long Island Sound into the East River. All of which would mean that the sea water would have no place to go except the streets, the subways, and the tunnels of low lying areas of NYC, causing devastating tidal flooding.

          Which is exactly what happened.

IF Mayor Bloomberg had understood and heeded the realities of this kind of storm track and scenario (which was very accurately predicted by many forecasters days in advance) ---instead of relying on the erroneous and reckless decision of the Weather Bureau NOT to issue any hurricane warnings for this so-called “hybrid: storm (with 94 mile winds!)

          ....THEN....

we would have had a much earlier and a much more orderly evacuation - instead of a last minute rush to action by the Mayor and the City on Sunday (the day before the storm).

We of course need to harden our infrastructure. But ...both the Weather Bureau and the Mayor’s advisors absolutely need to get their act together for future situations like this, as they begin to occur more and more frequently....

Republicans don't watch shows like that. What they are trying to tell you is that FOX News and Rush Limbaugh didn't predict this. The fact that 99.99% of every scientist on the planet did... well, that don't prove nothing!

Yes, no mater how this election turns out, it's near the finish line for the Republican party. The demographics are changing against them. More minorities are being born than white babies and minorities tend to vote Democrat.

Also, a large portion of those minorities are Hispanic and the GOP has gone to war against them and very very few of them vote Republican.

Also, younger people are going more and more to the Democratic party.

Don't forget the war on women. You go girl!

For the first time in this election cycle, as of today's averaged polling numbers from Real Clear Politics and FiveThirtyEight, I've come to the conclusion that Obama's re-election is a certainty... barring, of course, Adelson and the Koch Brothers buying the electronic tabulation in just enough swing states to make the difference.

It's been fun, Righties, but you should have gone with Huntsman...and you should have cut loose the Tea Party and all that it has grown to represent.

At least that way, you might have salvaged part of your national reputation in preparation for a fight with Hillary in 2016.
