I read of two incidents while he was governor, one in Greenfield, Massachusetts (2005) and one in Melrose, Massachusetts (2006). Gov Romney was in NC to speak at an economic summit when the disaster in Greenfield hit (Green River flooded its banks and took out low-income housing and trailers)and he did not interrupt his visit to return to his state; it took complaints by the press and 3 days before the mayor got a phone call. In the Melrose incident (natural disaster took out a trailer park of elderly retirees), FEMA was onsite the day after the disaster and Gov. Romney never stopped in, called or visited even thought the disaster site was reportedly only three miles from his home.

I wonder if he's called his home state yet to find out from the current MA gov. how his former constituents are doing.

Here's what Paul Ryan has been angling for:

That's in line with a policy prescription advocated by Mitt Romney at a GOP candidates' debate last year, in which he said it was "immoral" for the federal government to play a significant role in disaster relief at a time of high budget deficits. Pressed by CNN moderator John King on whether he'd really send disaster relief to the states, he replied, "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

While the opacity of Ryan's budget makes a definitive statement impossible, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that cuts to FEMA would be in line with his general budgetary approach. "This form of discretionary federal aid would be subject to cuts under the Ryan budget," the center wrote. "If it were scaled back substantially, states and localities would need to bear a larger share of the costs of disaster response and recovery, or attempt to make do with less during difficult times."

Third Way, a moderate think tank, wrote in March that the Ryan budget would cut funding by 62 percent for community and regional development, including disaster aid and insurance.

"This would mean less accurate predictions and planning for disasters, less preparation that can reduce the severity of their impact, and less timely responses," according to the Third Way memo. "It would set the clock back on disaster preparation to the days before Hurricane Katrina."

Although Ryan's plan never became law, it provides some insight into the still fuzzy budget priorities of his running mate, who has said he would adopt a separate but similar plan to the one introduced by Ryan. Romney has directly advocated cuts to FEMA and, like Ryan, supports broader funding cuts that would likely apply to the agency.

At the same time, in the state where Romney needs desperately to win, OH, Obama's lead has been widening over the past two days; conversely, in the state where Romney needs desperately to hold onto his lead, FL, that lead has been eroding over the same period.

So...

In order for Obama to win re-election, the least complex route appears to be through maintaining his current lead in the five toss-up states where his existing margins are widest, PA, MI, NV, OH, and WI. Doing so would bring his electoral vote total on Election Day to 271. In this scenario, Obama could still surpass 270 while failing to hold either IO or NH.

However, should Obama fail to hold OH, the loss could effectively be neutralized by any of the following combination of wins from states where FiveThirtyEight is currently predicting Obama victories:

Path #1: Obama loses OH but wins IO, NH, and CO resulting in 272 electoral votes.

Path #2: Obama loses OH but wins VA and NH resulting in 270 electoral votes.

Path #3: Obama loses OH but wins VA and IO resulting in 272 electoral votes.

Path #4: Obama loses OH but wins VA and CO resulting in 275 electoral votes.

With Romney's lead having diminished significantly in FL over the past two weeks and with Hurricane Sandy forcefully highlighting the stark contrast between Obama and Romney regarding the value, necessity, and mere existence of FEMA in a state which has perhaps the greatest dependence on federal storm relief efforts in the country, a 5th path has suddenly appeared on the horizon which could provide for some interesting election night television:

Path #5: Obama loses OH, IO, NH, and WI while failing to capture VA and CO but comes from behind to steal FL resulting in 272 electoral votes.

It should be noted regarding Paths #1 and #2 that there remains some question as to the accuracy of the RCP polling numbers in NH which still include in their average a recent 'outlier' finding from UNH which had Obama leading by a questionable 9.0%.

For Romney to unseat Obama, he not only would have to hold the three states in which he presently leads, FL, NC, and VA bringing his electoral vote total to 248, but also steal a victory in CO where his lead fell from 0.4% on Friday to that of dead heat and in OH where Obama's lead this morning rose to 2.4%. By so doing, Romney's electoral vote total would reach 275.

Should Romney take CO and VA but fail to take OH, he could overcome this shortfall by stealing WI and either IO or NH, resulting respectively in an electoral vote total of 273 or 271.

In either scenario, however, Romney must hold FL at all costs.

FiveThirtyEight, at present, estimates the chance of Election Day victory for each candidate as follows: Obama 77.4% - Romney 22.6%. FiveThirtyEight also projects that on Election Day the final electoral tally will be as follows: Obama 299 - Romney 239. Lastly, although it makes no difference in terms of the final result which can only be determined by the Electoral College, FiveThirtyEight currently predicts a national popular vote
distribution on Election Day as follows: Obama 50.4% - Romney 48.5%.

With only 130 hours of campaigning left, this one is going to come down to the wire….and quite possibly, in a few of the closest toss-up states, to the October jobs report which because of Hurricane Sandy may be delayed from a scheduled Friday release to the following Monday, one day before the election.

Let's hope that Election Day is free of both voter fraud and voter intimidation and that eligible voters who have registered in good faith over the past six months are in fact able to vote on November 6; let's also hope that vote tabulation itself is performed honestly and accurately by both the election commissions and private corporations to whom this essential role is being entrusted.

In any case, it will be interesting to watch as election night unfolds.

Let's see McCain showed up to talk about Obama and the Benghazi attacks and why Romney should be president, he's a war hero but come on, like anyone is going to respect an opinion of the guy that chose Palin for a running mate. The Romney Election 2012 Biography was playing on repeat throughout the event. To top it all off, Red Cross will reject the aid Romney provided. If Romney would have involved ONE single Red Cross volunteer in this "Red Cross Aid Event" they would have known that the Red Cross specifically says, they do not have the manpower or resources to receive, sort, categorize, store, and deploy material donations. Their website specifically says they DO NOT want donations such as canned goods, clothes, and blankets. Yet Romney's non-campaign, Red Cross Aid Event, ONLY provided those materials.

The highest priority for the East Coast's recovery right now is getting to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi.

The request for security cash was to extend some tours of security in Tripoli, not Benghazi.

All the security and all the King's Men, would not necessarily prevent the death of a diplomat. I have big fatalities from a major accident in my family, and all the preventions you might anticipate, would not have made any difference.

Ambassadors know the risks, and they take them. There were multiple attacks, and some deaths under Reagan and GWB. If you can face the truth about lots of unfairness in life, you can face this one too.

Yes...diplomats take certain risks, but how is it possible that he was left with nearly no protection in an area that was known to have AlQueda cells nearby and not provided with a reasonable amount of security? One could understand if a reasonable precaution for his safety was exercised and in the best case, he still lost his life, then his death would have had meaning. Instead, we learn that repeated requests for his safety were either denied or ignored by those under direct leadership of Obama. About 75 people, including many retirees, lost their homes in the trailer park, she says. Still many more were displaced. I don't see that as taking care of those in need. Nor this:

It is the host country's responsibility to keep foreign ambassadors safe. Not the ambassador's country. We have ambassadors from every country all over the world here--would you advocate a contingent of Chinese armed guards standing in front of the Chinese embassy in DC guarding it? How about the Russian embassy? Security for the embassy was the responsibility of the Libyans. Now, earlier this year there had been an incident close to the embassy, and that was swiftly dealt with with no loss of life. Based on that conditioned response, a decision was made to pull the SST out--they had already stayed one 18 month extension past their original 18 month deployment, and had not seen home soil in three years.

Am I excusing what happened? Oh, and Ambassador Stevens was not 'murdered'. He died of smoke inhalation at the hospital in Benghazi.

His death did have meaning. Did you not see the people holding signs that decried his death? He was well-liked by the people in Benghazi, being one of the few on any side who called for peace, an end to warfare, intolerance and bloodshed. And surely you couldn't have missed the mass protest by the ordinary people barely a week later when they rose up, stormed the compound in which the militants responsible for the attack were hiding, broke in and drove them out (at the cost of thirty of their own lives.) The Libyan military didn't try to keep the angry people back.

So yes, I would argue that his death did have meaning. Assaults like this one on an embassy and assassination attempts like the one on the young Pakistani peace activist Malala Yousufzai have turned the tide of opinion in the Middle East against the extremists (do a Google search for 'Al Quaeda's D-Day in Somalia) and their hold is weakening (for example, an Afghani woman competed in the Summer Olympics this year, the first woman ever from that country to ever do so--previously even if a woman qualified per the rules of the IOC, she was not allowed to compete this year, she was and she was not compelled to wear a burka while doing it, she wore a headscarf out of choice.

To make matters worse he lectured about "free speech" and "tolerance" of other people's religious beliefsand their opinions. UNBELIEVABLE but true. You can't make this stuff up!!!!!

...and it doesn't stop there! THEN, he says at the second debate between himself and Mitt Romney that he called the attack "AN act of terrorism" the day after it happened in a speech he gave from the Rose Garden at the White House.

Now HERE is where something has been PROVEN; it has been PROVEN that he NEVER USED THAT PHRASE SPECIFICALLY IN REFERENCE TO BENGHAZI. He LIED when he said that he did.

Obama-Shama-Lama-Ding-Dongs complain about lies that Romney never told, while they accept THIS LIE from Obama which concerns itself with the loss of life.

Mitt's income last year was $21.6 MILLION (taxable, meaning after all his deductions for stuff like his wife's horse, his vacation homes' mortgage interest, etc., etc.). $5,000 is .000231% of his annual income, or 2.31 HUNDRED MILLIONTH of what his income.

Even assuming your figure of $369 for Biden is correct , that is .11% of his income. That's 1.1 THOUSANDth of his income.

Decimal places are important, jerry.

That's why, when people say "Mitt's rich" and a GOP'er says "well, Obama's rich, too", we know they can't count figure out the math.

McCain showed up as a speaker to give the crowd his political views and talk about Benghazi, and Romney's biography was playing on repeat the entire time. Also, get this, Red Cross is going to have to reject the aid Romney is providing. I said this above but it looks like I have to repeat it. If Romney would have involved ONE single Red Cross volunteer in this "Red Cross Aid Event" they would have known that the Red Cross specifically says, they do not have the manpower or resources to receive, sort, categorize, store, and deploy material donations. Their website specifically says they DO NOT want donations such as canned goods, clothes, and blankets. Yet Romney's non-campaign, Red Cross Aid Event, ONLY provided those materials. So the East Coast will not be receiving any of the aid from Romney's "fundraiser" that didn't raise any funds.

I worked with a couple disaster response teams over the last few years. I contacted one of them today. They have boots on the ground already (Delaware). They said the needs are already deemed "tremendous". I am working with 3 different churches / denominations to put together an immediate response to the crisis. I also contacted my human resources department to coordinate a response among our 10,000 +/- employees with what the people on the ground need.

Like many other Christians, I say let's get busy. We see those less fortunate in need, so let's attend to that need - just as recorded in Matthew 25 - the trigger mechanism for the hatred on this vine today.

If anyone else wants to help, go with the known reputable organizations, or Google search others you may not know. The important thing is to get involved! Winter is coming. Lots of construction needed to get folks back into flooded-out homes.

The President does not expect churches to obey government. Christians like him (and me) ask citizens to be part of the nation and respect the freedoms it offers. The choice of religion is a personal one - within the nation, and the rules of one religion cannot be imposed on all. The values Jesus taught are included in the Constitution (with the exception of treating slaves as non-persons). The specifics beyond that you can honor when you worship at church or at home.

The government has never subdued me. People like you who insist that we cannot see religion in our own way without imposing it on others do try to limit our freedoms.

Anyone celebrity can 'suggest' people donate some money to the Red Cross if they, you know, may want to and happen to have the time. Telling people to do it instead of helping him, (even though at this point his campaign doesn't need any more financial help anyway), would actually show, you know, a glimmer of actual leadership in a time of crisis.

Did he say contribute food? Usually when I donate to the Red Cross (as I did yesterday) it is in monetary form. NOT food, clothes, hiney wipe, or toothpaste. People brought what they could from their probably scarcely stocked pantry.

So what did Obama give from his warchest? No, he is happy to make his contribution by playing head man. "No red tape, no bureaucracy". When the wheels were already turning. Power trucks left from here the night of and morning after to be on scene.

I had an email from the Obama campaign on Monday asking me to donate to the Red Cross and giving me a link to do so online. Made it really easy to do.

This is why it is stupid to inject yourself into an ongoing crisis for political gain. Because you will tell your followers to do stupid, counterproductive things because they will listen to you even though you are not a disaster relief specialist. Your efforts will generally cause more difficulty than they will solve because you don't know what to do. And because of the unique position the disaster relief organizations are put in, they will not have the luxury to turn you down.

Romney was opportunistic and stupid. He wanted a photo op. He got it. Now the Red Cross in New Jersey has an added set of responsibilities to deal with along with what they should be concentrating on right now... the actualy disaster relief.

Sure. My personal opinion is that Obama should not return to campaigning at all and just spend the week looking competent and doing his job during the crisis. However, if either of them, Romney or Obama) really wants the good optics of being seen as being helpful during this crisis, it would behoove whichever one it is to do the bare minimum of research necessary to assist the disaster relief organizations in the way that the disaster relief organizations really want to be helped.

That's the real problem with this. Romney, (or his campaign staff), didn't even bother to stop for 5 minutes to check what the Red Cross really wanted. They just assumed they knew best and ended up looking like morons. Perhaps good intentioned morons, but still morons.

The stuff was being sent to the victory locations for distribution. And if not, then there are plenty of charities that would be thrilled to get the stuff and know who and how to get it to those who need it worst. The is a fellow viner from Florida that posted that when the Hurricanes hit, the first ones in are the Salavation Army and the Mormons. There are denominations including the catholic church that send teams of people to deliver collected items and have volunteers take the goods and distribute them. Then later the churches will send teams of people to help people rebuild homes and churches.

My godson spent two years in New Orleans helping people rebuild. I wish my subcompact tractor was in better order, had a way to transport it, and I had funds. I could run that thing hours helping them dig out places others can't get into.

We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do? And those things we've got to stop doing, because we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in. We cannot ...”

Moderator King interjected: “Including disaster relief, though?”

Romney replied: “We cannot – we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all.”

Yeah right...NO sense. Other than this: when there is a disaster, of course local authorities are the first responders. But, the fact is that the areas hit by disaster by definition do not have the resources to deal with the problem. That is why they ARE disasters; there is disruption of the local economy and infrastructure. These areas need help from the rest of us; and since New Jersey cannot tax people in California to provide this relief (and thank God, neither can the private sector...at least not yet, although I'm sure Romney would love to donate MY money to his corporate masters and will try to do so if elected), the federal government must administer this assistance. SHEESH, I am certainly a reasonably intelligent ten year old could understand this. Certainly governors in affected areas do, regardless of political party. It's not so clear why Mr. Romney cannot seem to grasp this! Other than he chooses not to because it is inconvenient to the interests he serves.

Did you hear about Romney's charity donations? Apparently he puts money that he's 'donating' to a charity, such as the Mormon Church, into a 'trust' whereupon he borrows the tax exempt status of the charity on that money which doesn't go to the charity until after he dies and then it's usually a fraction of what was supposedly donated...no wonder the filthy rich just keep getting filthier!

Yes, campaigning did stop for a time but only the haters perceive him in an inaccurate light, seeing what they choose to see, filtered by their own biases. Fortunately, Romney will prevail in the end to start the hard work of repairing this country for the destruction that took place the last four years, not counting the recent storm that hit the east.

1. Ryan claimed that President Obama
“took” $716 billion from Medicare to fund Obamacare and that he and Romney will
“protect” Medicare. But Obama did not “take” any funds from Medicare. He
achieved savings in the program by lowering future reimbursement rates to
medical providers, like doctors and hospitals. People on Medicare today and in
the future will not be affected by the cuts. Ryan also failed to acknowledge
that his own budget plan envisions a similar $700 billion savings from
Medicare. He also proposes to privatize Medicare and replace it with a voucher
system in which seniors will have to use vouchers to buy private health
insurance.

2. Ryan again criticized the Obama stimulus package, but didn’t acknowledge
that he lobbied the Obama administration for stimulus funds for his own
Congressional district.

3. Romney criticized Obama for government bailouts, but didn’t acknowledge that
one of his companies, Bain Capital, would have collapsed were it not for a $10
million federal bailout.

4. Ryan blamed Obama for the closure of a GM plant in Ryan’s district in
Wisconsin, but Ryan knows that the plant closed during the Bush administration.
Ryan also criticized Obama for the auto bailout without acknowledging that he
also voted for the auto bailout. Ryan also didn’t acknowledge that the auto
bailout saved the US auto industry, and that Romney had proposed allowing the
industry to go bankrupt.

5. Ryan blamed the credit downgrade of the US government on Obama, when S&P
stated it was in part because the federal government had not raised taxes — tax
increases that Ryan and his fellow GOP representatives have steadfastly refused
to vote for.

6. Ryan criticized Obama for not embracing the recommendations of the
bipartisan Simpson-Bowles debt commission. Ryan, however, did not acknowledge
that he was a member of that commission and voted against its recommendations.

7. Ryan criticized Obama for not balancing the federal budget, but did not
acknowledge that his own budget plan doesn’t envision a balanced budget for at
least twenty years.

8. Romney and Ryan repeated the lie that Obama said in a speech that small
business owners did not “build” their own businesses. Obama said that business
owners throughout the country are helped by the fact that government builds
roads that the businesses and their employees use and operates schools that
educate future workers.

9. Romney and Ryan criticized Obama for the failure of some small businesses
during his administration, effectively saying that it’s okay to blame the
government if a business fails, but it’s not okay for the government to take
some credit when it succeeds.

10. Romney and Ryan blamed Obama for not accomplishing more during his first
term, but failed to acknowledge that Republicans in Congress attempted to block
or actually blocked nearly all of Obama’s initiatives.

11. Romney said that Obama embarked on an “apology tour” around the world
immediately after taking office, but Obama never once apologized for America’s
behavior to anyone.

12. Romney claimed that Obama raised taxes on the middle class, but Obama has
raised no taxes during his administration.

13. Romney claimed that when he ran Bain Capital, it “helped” companies save
jobs, when, in fact, Bain Capital’s typical business practice was to saddle
companies it took over with huge amounts of debt and outrageous “management
fees,” thereby forcing the companies to lay off thousands of workers.

14. In a TV-ad barrage, Romney and Ryan say Obama eliminated the work
requirements in welfare. The president did not; he allowed states to relax the
requirements, but only if they could show that more welfare recipients in their
states were actually getting jobs.

Manufacturing in markets where the vehicle will be sold is a time-honored tradition in the auto industry. Saves on tariffs and shipping, less transit damages, etc....

Jobs related to auto manufacturing in the USA have grown and will continue to do so. Chrysler has issued two communications verifying that. Romney is wrong - it's a lie what he and his ads said. He should have enough class to admit it.

Manufacturing in China is needed because US cars are very popular in China - GM has the top seller. Profits are repatriated in the US and bring more expansion here - next addition in Michigan in 2013. Chrysler is owned partly by Fiat - and they will be selling those cars manufactured in Italy in Europe.

Anyone who knows the car business would know this is typical - and takes away NO US jobs. Romney should be particularly embarassed, as he the son of a "car guy', and he has gotten this "saving the US car industry and its jobs " thing wrong from the beginning.

The team, known as the Commander's In-extremis Force, was designed specifically for quick reaction to unforeseen emergencies. But U.S. officials say it did not arrive in Sicily until after the attack was over.

Even if the team had been ready in time, confusion about what was happening on the ground in Benghazi -- and State Department concerns about violating Libyan sovereignty -- made a military rescue mission impractical, the officials say.

That confusion can be read in State Department cables from the day of the attack. At 4:05 p.m. ET, a cable warned the consulate was under attack. Forty-nine minutes later, another cable reported that the firing had stopped and the compound had been cleared.

Meanwhile, CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan reports that the FBI and State Department have reviewed video from security cameras that captured the attack on the consulate.

The audio feed of the attack was being monitored in real time in Washington by diplomatic security official Charlene Lamb. CBS News has learned that video of the assault was recovered 20 days later from the more than 10 security cameras at the compound.

So ONE PERSON was monitoring an AUDIO FEED and the security tapes of the attack were not recovered until almost THREE WEEKS after the attack. The reports of a real-time monitoring by anybody besides the ONE PERSON may be based on the allegations of ONE ALLEGEDLY grieving father (since we can't be sure that the person who called FOX was actually who he said he was) who ONLY called Conservative outlets to vent his grief. Ask yourself: How would ONE MAN who lived in the US and does NOT have access to a SINGLE PERSON in the administration or military have that information? Maybe he's talking out of his rear end and making allegations because of his OWN political ideology. And if you look closer at the districts with the states you will see who the true Obama supporters are, specifically minorities, latinos, union members, and some of the senior citizens.
