Romney doubles down on Jeep attack in radio ad

Updated 4 p.m. ET — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign doubled down on its assertion about auto industry jobs moving to China with a new radio ad in northwest Ohio.

A Romney for president ad airing on Toledo, Ohio's classic rock station, WXKR, strongly insinuates that President Barack Obama's 2009 bailout of the auto industry has led to jobs shifting from the United States to China.

The narrator in the ad says:

Barack Obama says he saved the auto industry. But for who? Ohio or China? Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China which means 15,000 more jobs for China. And now comes word that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps is starting to build cars in, you guessed it, China. What happened to the promises made to autoworkers in Toledo and throughout Ohio? The same hard-working men and women who were told that Obama’s auto bailout would help them. Mitt Romney grew up in the auto industry. Maybe that’s why the Detroit News endorsed him saying ‘Romney understands the industry and will shield it from regulators who never tire of churning out new layers of mandates. Mitt Romney – he’ll stand up for the auto industry.  In Ohio, not China.

The radio spot follows a TV controversial ad playing to fears that Chrysler had plans to move production of Jeeps from the U.S. to China. Romney and other Republicans had previously given voice to errant reports suggesting such a shift, though those original reports referred only to capacity for production of vehicles in China for sale in China.

The TV ad drew extensive coverage in the media for its suggestion that Jeep was moving jobs to China at the expense of positions in the United States. Toledo, a prime swing territory in the battleground state of Ohio, is home to a major Jeep production facility.

The radio spot goes a step further in stoking fears that U.S. production of Jeeps would be moved offshore to China.

As First Read wrote on Monday, this series of ads — running during the closing days of the campaign — mark an effort by Romney to re-frame his opposition to the auto industry bailout and defend himself from Obama's attacks on the issue.

, Bloomberg News reported that Fiat "is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, for export to North America." Today, that news became real when company CEO Sergio Marchnionne announced, in Bloomberg's words (in paragraph 6, subtitled "Italy's Jeep"), that it will "build a small Jeep in Italy for export beginning in 2014 ... a new model for Europe and the U.S. that isn't currently in production."

Of course, today's Bloomberg report led with Marchionne's clever denial about the company's plans for manufacturing in China: "Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China." No, he has instead set the stage for newer Jeep models exported to the U.S. to gradually supplant older models made in the U.S. over several years. This should be an embarrassment to those who engineered the Obama administration's bailout of Chrysler in 2009, ripping off secured creditors in the bankruptcy process and thereby giving Fiat a larger initial share of the company than it deserved. But don't worry, Colleen Barry at the Associated Press is there with vague language to ensure that this news doesn't become general knowledge (bold is mine):

FIAT PLANS TO LAUNCH 17 NEW CARS IN EUROPE BY 2016

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne says he will ramp up production of the Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Jeep brands in Europe by 2016 to put idled Italian plants back to work.

A new industrial plan for Fiat, which controls Chrysler, announced Tuesday foresees the launch of 17 new car models from Italy from 2013 to 2016.

Marchionne told analysts that the focus is on luxury brands Maserati and Alfa Romeo because they have high enough margins to generate profits as exports. The plan includes a smaller Jeep aimed primarily at Europe.

It's also "aimed" at North America, but Colleen chose not to inform readers of that inconvenient fact.

The reelection campaign of Barack Obama is beating up on Mitt Romney over China, while the beneficiary of administration's 2009 largesse is quietly moving production of Chrysler's new generation of its signature vehicle overseas. The AP's Barry is shamefully helping to keep it quiet.

2014 Jeep Compass / Patriot Replacement Spy Photos

A single Fiat-based CUV will replace the lackluster Jeeps.

October 2011
BY JON YANCA
MULTIPLE PHOTOGRAPHERS

If you think the legion of Alfa Romeo Giulietta–based mules we've seen running around is getting a bit tiresome, well, we sort of feel the same way, too. Almost daily, our inboxes get fat with photo sets of one matte-black prototype or another, cut, chopped, and resized in a dozen different ways. But there's a good reason the hatchback keeps popping up: Its next-gen bones will serve as the basis for Chrysler's crucial small-car overhaul. The compact cavalry includes a Caliber-replacing sedan for Dodge and the Jeep seen here, which will put the unloved Patriot and Compass out to pasture.

With its jacked-up ride height signaling Jeep-y intentions, the mule's Giulietta body is merely an exterior shell covering a newly embiggened Fiat platform known as "Compact Wide." (It's based on the Giulietta's current C-Evo architecture; our sources indicate that C-Wide adds roughly two inches of width.) This particular mule is likely the front-drive version of the compact Jeep, as the photos show no evidence of drive components for the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is certainly in the plans for the Compass/Patriot replacement, however: Jeep chief Mike Manley has stressed that the brand's future vehicles will be offered in both efficient on-road—in this case, FWD—and focused off-road versions.

Due out sometime in 2013—probably as a 2014 model—this Jeep is currently tapped for production alongside an Alfa version in the Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, although fluctuating exchange rates and assembly costs could easily change those plans. It's too early to know exactly what will power the CUV, but you can expect a small four-cylinder featuring Fiat's MultiAir tech and possibly a turbocharger—the Fiat 500's 1.4-liter can whip up as much as 170 hp in turbo guise. Alfa's new 1.8-liter turbo four is another possibility, while the automatic transmission is likely to be a ZF-designed nine-speed unit. Whatever the details, we think can say one thing for certain: The final result can't possibly be worse than the Compass or Patriot.

More lies from Romney . Hardly a surprise . How can people believe any of his statements when there is proof that he is a liar . Once a liar always a liar . Blatant lies from one who wants to be the president of the U.S. ? How can he insult the office of the presidency like that and not arouse our ire ? The lack of integrity by the Romney campaign has tainted the Reps for decades . How can you believe anything they say ?

This is a story because it's been exposed as a lie, yet the Romney campaign still runs it. If he pulled the ads, it would go away, but apparently the Romney team would rather risk getting a few uneducated voters in Ohio to fall for it, than being made a mockery of across the rest of the country.

I believe the GOP expects to lose, but is desperately trying to paint a picture of pockets of support even in blue states to keep the morale up in their base. SO, we seen then trowing money at Pennsylvania, northern Maine, etc... It would be extremely embarassing for Romney to lose every northeastern state, so he wants that split electoral vote from Maine. The same goes for other blue northern states, so he wants to claim solid support in the rural areas. If the race talk from the GOP is any indicator of a strategy, I think the GOP wants to be able to say that if it wasn't for blacks and other minorities, they would easily have won.

The truth hurts! Of course, now that we have Government Motors Corp and the other Obama takeovers in the auto industry, the work is going to communist countries. Interesting. Obama lies constantly. Don't listen to what he says, watch what he does! But then most of the people who are commenting here only watch the government propaganda news sources, so of course they believe the trash put out by the lame street media.

Yawn- you take comments out of context or projections on future events whereas Romney LIES about policy.

Sandy will Bankrupt New Jersey if New Jersey was responsible for all costs. Yet Romney two months ago wanted to make Fema a state function or better yet a private venture. When asked yesterday during the Non Campaign campaign event Romney REFUSED to answer.

              Why
are so many so surprised that Myth Romney stood in front of 67 million voters
and lied thru his teeth??? That is the GOP way!!!

              George
              H. W. Bush "Read my lips no new taxes"!!!

              George
              W. Bush "Republicans will be compassionate conservatives"???

              Mitt
Romney "I never said I was going to give the rich an additional 10 percent
              off on their taxes"&&&

              I'm
starting to think I like the idea of Romney winning. And when he gives he and
his rich buddies more tax breaks and takes this country's economy over the edge
of that cliff that President Obama has worked so hard to pull us back from with
nothing but treasonous opposition from the idiots on the right, I am going to
              love it.

              Then
when the right pulls out the second trick in their three trick pony act, I
might actually weep for you idiots when he sends your kids into war so he and
his rich buddies can get even richer while your kids come home in boxes.

              And
the third trick is to deregulate everything, banks, insurance companies,
utility companies and its "bend over middle class"!!!

I think the way that the Republicans has treated the President of the United States is unacceptable.

I can not imagine getting out of bed every morning knowing that the republicans are going to bully, and treat so disrespectful. President Obama has to try to work for the American people while being harassed, bullied, intimidated, etc........ I commend him for all that he has done. he was presented a huge mess by W. It must be so hard to get things done, when we were suppose to all be on the same team, but the one percent are so greedy that they just want more. too bad they haven't figured out that you can only sleep in one house, drive one car, they seem to want everything and leave nothing for the American people.

You're right! Work for the American people. Jeffrey Immelt, The head of GE and the presidents advsier for business. GE paid ZERO taxes in 2010 on a profit of 14.2 billion. In 2011 they have a roughly 11.3% tax. And Monsanto is in for millions in tax credits. Glad Obama's looking out for the 'little' guy!

I'm just amazed and really discouraged that republicans would endeavor to disinform the public in order to gain power.

It really does show what they are all about, and sadly it's not the American citizen.

Romney obviously has no moral compunction about blatantly lying to us, and smiling as he does so.

Romney in the last debate was acting like he was running for China. He said the poor people in china when they leave their house they need to be able to go to a job, put food on their table.

I wish they would show that clip.

It is quite a stretch for President Obama to argue that he wants to cut taxes for small businesses. In reality, he is proposing to increase taxes on small businesses by around $49 billion.

President Obama has touted his treatment of small businesses repeatedly over the course of the campaign, and last week's presidential debate was no exception. "I also lowered taxes for small businesses 18 times. And what I want to do is continue the tax rate — the tax cuts that we put into place for small businesses and families," argued Obama.

While in the strictest sense it is true that the president has lowered taxes for small businesses 18 times, this does not accurately reflect the totality of his small-business tax policy. In fact, on net, the president's policy proposals will inflict significant harm on small businesses.

First, to the 18 times. Note how the president corrected himself after he accidentally mentioned tax rates. There is a clear reason for this: his "tax cuts" for small businesses have not been across-the-board marginal rate cuts, but instead have been targeted and often temporary deductions, tax credits, and subsidies. (It's easier to cut taxes 18 times if your cuts are temporary.)

Of the 18, only 10 of them are still in place. Half of these 10 are extensions of programs first enacted by President George W. Bush or even before his time in office. (I assume that these are not "the failed policies of the past" to which the president does not want to return.)

So we started with 18, but now we're down to 5. Estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, the Joint Committee on Taxation, and the U.S. Treasury Department suggest that the sum total of the tax breaks created by the remaining five will amount to at most $3 billion in 2013.

When the president says that he wants to continue the tax cuts that he has put in place for small businesses, presumably this $3 billion is what he is referring to.

But it is important to remember that taxes can go up and down. Let's take the president at his word and assume that the $3 billion-per-year cuts stay in place. Is this the totality of the president's tax policy proposals for small businesses?

Every time Obama touts his small-business tax policies, what he is really announcing is that if reelected, he will destroy 200,000 American jobs in 2013 alone.

Nope. In addition to keeping the $3 billion in cuts, the president has proposed and even enacted several tax increases for 2013 that would apply to small businesses that are organized as pass-through entities, firms that have their income taxed at the individual, not the corporate level — for example, partnerships and S corporations. (The overwhelming majority of small businesses are organized as pass-through entities.)

Specifically, the president has proposed the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, which will increase taxes by 4.6 percentage points on incomes above $250,000. Obama will increase taxes by a further 3.8 percentage points on these same incomes through the Unearned Income Medicare Contribution. (Is it unearned because "you didn't build that"?) And we shouldn't forget the reimplementation of the Pease provision, also scheduled for January 1, which adds an additional 1 percentage point to the effective tax rate for these businesses.

It should come as no surprise that these tax increases dwarf the $3 billion in tax decreases that the president has brought small businesses.

According to a report by the Joint Committee on Taxation, approximately $690 billion of business income will be reported on tax returns subject to the marginal rate increases. A very conservative estimate based on IRS figures of the distribution of partnership and S-Corp income shows that only about 80 percent of this income is actually subject to the highest marginal rate, which puts the size of the tax hike at around 9.4 percent of 80 percent of $690 billion, or about $52 billion.

That $52 billion is much more than the sum of all tax breaks, which was about $3 billion. So it's quite a stretch for the president to argue that he wants to cut taxes for small businesses. In fact, he wants to raise taxes on small businesses by an order of magnitude.

What does this mean for the affected firms? On average, an additional tax bill of $48,000. That's a stunning increase.

A major issue in this presidential campaign is jobs. How would employment be affected by this tax increase?

To be fair to the president, let's adopt the White House's own multiplier. The White House claims that the American Jobs Act would create 1.9 million jobs thanks to $447 billion in additional spending and tax breaks. This amounts to one job for every $235,000.

As we have seen, the president's policies would raise taxes on small businesses by $49 billion. According to his own math, that would lead to some 200,000 fewer jobs.

By this arithmetic – President Clinton should be pleased by this method — every time Obama touts his small-business tax policies, what he is really announcing is that if reelected he will destroy 200,000 American jobs in 2013 alone. That's 800,000 jobs over the course of a potential second term, or one additional unemployed worker for every 14 unemployed workers today.

"Normally," said Obama back in August 2009, "you don't raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven't and why we've instead cut taxes." As the president knows, we have recession-level unemployment. Given what he said a few years ago, why does the president want to raise taxes on small businesses?

doing away with the upper level of the Bush Tax cut impacts 2% of all TAXPayers.

The tax rate increase affects you if you have NET PROFIT of $250,000 or more- not all of your pay only that portion above the 250K.

Romney likes to cite a Earnst and Young CPA report commissioned by the lobbyist group for s corps to demonstrate the WORSE CASE effect. It is a DEMONSTRATED fact that only 2% of all taxpayers would be impacted.

I wonder if "Jeep" can go after Romney for spreading these lies? I am sure these lies put a scare in the workers, share holders and people buying "Jeeps". If "Jeep" can prove that sales dropped and that production dropped then "Jeep" should go after Romney and make him liable for the damages. It's one thing to tall a lie and get caught and apologize for the lie but to get caught and tell the lie even more. How low will Romney go?

Yawn- You take comments or projections that dont work out versus POLICY positions by Romney that change depending upon who he is speaking with and in your partisan mind equate the two.

New Jersey would be bankrupt paying for the storm damage- yet Romney proposed doing away with Fema just a couple of months ago and having the states handle it or better yet private enterprise. When asked about it yesterday during the Non Campaign campaign event Romney does what he always does he said NOTHING

"Let's set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China," Chrysler executive Gualberto Ranieri wrote in a statement, using italics for emphasis. "A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments." Ranieri said the conclusion that it was moving all production to China was "a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats."

2014 Jeep Compass / Patriot Replacement Spy Photos

A single Fiat-based CUV will replace the lackluster Jeeps.

WRONG! That claim by Obama - another of Obama's lies, but you don't want to hear that - has been debunked. Romney has outsourced only 879 jobs to overseas. Obama, however, has outsourced many thousands of jobs overseas. Even Obama's stimulus package - which was supposed to generate jobs in this country - outsourced jobs to China, Norway, and other countries.

@Tammy-311614 You better check your facts more thourghly because Romney has closed several factories here in the USA and has put well over 2 thousand people out of work while he is putting over 5 thousand Chinese laborers to work on just two of the Chinese oil companies that he is heavily invested in. He has also opened two factories in China and is in the process of building a factory in Finland and one in Ireland with plans to close two more factories here in the USA when these two overseas factories fire up. Romney has put well over 879 Americans out of work. It is in the multiple thousands so please check your information better before yopu post on here and look like a horses patoot again. Also how about him purchasing Hart Intercivic a company that makes voting machines that will be used across the nation and in 6 of the 9 swing states. should this not be illegal, it is immoral and definitely a conflict of interest. Hopefully the Justice Dept. will pull all the machines made by hart before the election next week. Romney is a liar and a cheat and does not care about you or me. he would squash you like a bug to make a penny.

How anyone can support a pathological liar like Romney is a real question. Not only does he flip flop all over the place sometimes when he flips is just lies and moves on. And for those of you with the delusion that Obama has outsourced jobs overseas we have medications for this disorder.
