Romney doubles down on Jeep attack in radio ad

Updated 4 p.m. ET — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign doubled down on its assertion about auto industry jobs moving to China with a new radio ad in northwest Ohio.

A Romney for president ad airing on Toledo, Ohio's classic rock station, WXKR, strongly insinuates that President Barack Obama's 2009 bailout of the auto industry has led to jobs shifting from the United States to China.

The narrator in the ad says:

Barack Obama says he saved the auto industry. But for who? Ohio or China? Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China which means 15,000 more jobs for China. And now comes word that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps is starting to build cars in, you guessed it, China. What happened to the promises made to autoworkers in Toledo and throughout Ohio? The same hard-working men and women who were told that Obama’s auto bailout would help them. Mitt Romney grew up in the auto industry. Maybe that’s why the Detroit News endorsed him saying ‘Romney understands the industry and will shield it from regulators who never tire of churning out new layers of mandates. Mitt Romney – he’ll stand up for the auto industry.  In Ohio, not China.

The radio spot follows a TV controversial ad playing to fears that Chrysler had plans to move production of Jeeps from the U.S. to China. Romney and other Republicans had previously given voice to errant reports suggesting such a shift, though those original reports referred only to capacity for production of vehicles in China for sale in China.

The TV ad drew extensive coverage in the media for its suggestion that Jeep was moving jobs to China at the expense of positions in the United States. Toledo, a prime swing territory in the battleground state of Ohio, is home to a major Jeep production facility.

The radio spot goes a step further in stoking fears that U.S. production of Jeeps would be moved offshore to China.

As First Read wrote on Monday, this series of ads — running during the closing days of the campaign — mark an effort by Romney to re-frame his opposition to the auto industry bailout and defend himself from Obama's attacks on the issue.

Ann Romney said that she is concerned about Mitt's mental stability. Here is further proof that her fears are well founded.

And HOW. I was shocked that she verbalized that. Then again, she's probably going to have a BIG private laff when he loses.

It's interesting to tune in to Fox News once in a while. It's kind of like a doctor checking on the patients in the psychiatric ward.

On the domestic front, the business about Jeep packing up and moving wholesale to China and thereby ruining America doesn't get much attention. The lie is too blatant. Not so blatant that Fox would ever refute it. On the contrary, whenever it's mentioned, the reference comes in the form of "Obama sold Chrysler to the Italians" or something like that. The detailed story of how the sneaky socialists of Europe managed to get their greasy hands around 58% of the shares. Part of the conspiracy, you know. But, though the figures sound accurate and devious, they're kind of boring.

On the international front, Fox is still chewing on Libya. All sorts of dyspeptic commentators have "heard stories" about the consulate begging for help while under attack and Hillary and Barack deciding to give them the finger instead of Marines.

You can't blame Fox for any of this. They have nothing else to go on. Obama's administration hasn't done that badly, considering the mess that he walked into and the fact that he was opposed every step of the way, even down to minor diplomatic appointments.

What are they going to do? Pimp Romney's biggest success in the public sector -- the passage of a mandatory health insurance act that's practically the twin of Obama's?

Do we seriously expect Fox to wait until the three investigations of the Benghazi attack are completed, so we get the full story of what happened?

Why ask for the moon when we have the stars?

It is the rational conservatives you better fear. Women are the majority in America, and all of the conservative women I know view Romney and Ryan to be in a special class, they both have total disregard for women. I think the Republican Party will soon be just a bunch of old white men, sitting around talking about the good old days of the 50's.

I am just sooooo mad that the Presidents NYC phot op trip was "denied". How can he win without a good photo op? I gotta feeling that idiot in Tunesia is gonna be killed off the night before the election so we can do a little football spiking and forget about that whole cover up thing...

And I think we should let loose of our strategic reserves to drop the price of gas on behalf of all the people who have to get in to help with storm recovery. Maybe a couple days before the election.

Actually, I provided an opinion wrapped in a little humor. Wasn't stating any factual information or trying to prove any point.

So, I think maybe your battery cells may be a bit low and need a plug in.

Kill Bucket person, Ya, I think Romney would be a lot better for America. I don't know what "lies" you believe they have told, but you are almost certainly wrong in your belief.

I think I would be a "fool" to support a complete failure for a second term because he sings and college girls want to have sex with him in exchange for free contraceptives.

Go plug in.... or hook yourself to a windmill.

I understand the instinct to maintain what passes for "journalistic distance" but NBC, you're being part of the problem. This article should say, "Romney blatantly tells lie to win votes in Ohio". Chrysler has already given a statement about how untrue this ad is and the facts about the auto bail-out are pretty cut and dry. This isn't a situation where you have to present both sides of a story. This is an example of a LIE. It your JOB to call it that. People complain that politicians lie and that we can trust the news. Politicians lie because they can get away with it because the news lost its credibility. You don't reclaim credibility by over correcting for "fairness". You get it back by exerting some real journalistic integrity. Call a spade a spade.

In 25 years, I have never seen a campaign like the Romney campaign. Whether it is lies about his own tax returns...or Obama's record....or saying small businesses 'didn't build that'....or the work requirement for welfare....or 'robbing' $716 from Medicare....to now just flat out making something up about Jeep and China....a new low for politics has been set. Romney is trying to show that you can brazenly lie and get away with it. The mainstream media has been terrible in doing their job and calling Romney to the carpet for these things. Given that, I suppose, why wouldn't Romney keep lying?!

It does appear (thank God) that even this one is too big a lie and too obvious to get away with. When the company you are talking about comes out immediately and calls you a liar...you have problems. When you continue on with those lies; we know you're desperate.

The reaction to Hurricane Sandy shows a true leader and one that simply wants to be President. Obama has been flawless in his response working with governors of both parties and Romney has looked unbelievably weak.

I for one cannot wait to send this scumbag home to whichever of his homes he wants to live in on November 7th.

I, for one, love to see the Romney surrogates trying to tap dance around the truthfulness of the Jeep ad(s) and Romney's stance on FEMA. The FEMA issue is a huge one...especially given the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. It speaks to the role of government each candidate is proposing.

If Romney believes FEMA should be privatized.....then stand up and defend your argument! Stop being a pansy and refusing to answer questions about it. This guy wants to become President? What a joke.

In a bid to fill some of its empty Italian production capacity, Fiat plans to build a pair of small SUVs at its plant in Melfi starting in 2014, according to Automotive News Europe. With most Chrysler plants running at or near full capacity, the Melfi facility will probably build the new Fiat and Jeep SUVs for export to North America. The final decision could come as soon as this weekend. The new small Jeep is expected to replace the Patriot and/or Compass, which are both produced in Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois plant.

Automotive News says Fiat sales are at their lowest since the 1970s, and the European auto market as a whole is expected to see its biggest decline since 1993. Exporting a potentially popular model like a new small SUV could help Fiat's bottom line, and the report indicates (from an unnamed source) that Fiat hopes the Italian government will reduce its corporate taxes on exported vehicles, which would make such a move even more beneficial. In addition to these new Fiat and Jeep SUVs, the upcoming Chrysler 100 hatchback could also be built in Italy at Fiat's Cassino plant.

The worst thing about this total lie is that conservatives will be dumb enough to believe it. My wife is Chinese and they have been sellings Jeeps there for a long time because they are so popular. They have also been manufatured there for a long time so that they can failry compete with local produced vehicles because there is no import tariff. If those Jeeps were imported from the US, the price would double and they would not sell them at all.

I especially like the way he tilts his head when he talks to the little people, and they believe him, and they will vote for him. He is a phony, he's not real, he has no plan for anything. Even his little four year stint as the governor of Massachusetts was a joke. He keeps telling his little people how great he was. Most of the bills passed in Massachusetts were passed against his wishes, he was the governor obstructionist. One term at that.

Vote for AGFLEW, he will make sure that every nation on earth will never even think about doing anything without first asking us.

It is puzzling why Mitt Romney refused to release his tax returns beyond 2010 and 2011. One would think that the grief he put up with by not releasing an additional three years of returns is greater than anything showing up on the returns. I just had an epiphany where the above rationale would not be accurate. Here are some facts.

Mitt Romney had a close relationship with Goldman Sachs while he was heading up Bain. Goldman was very much involved in the subprime housing boom and bust over the last decade that brought down the economy. They profited by creating subprime loans, bribing credit rating agencies such as S&P and Moody's to give an investment grade rating on the securities, securitizing the loans and selling them at huge profits. Then, when the economy collapsed Goldman got huge bailouts from the government while the consumer got nothing.

Per Opensecrets.org Goldman employees have contributed more than $990,000 to Romney's bid for the presidency. Since Romney was a big client of Goldman it would be only natural to recommend Romney buy these high yielding, highly rated investments. When the subprime business was collapsing it would also be somewhat natural for Goldman to tip off Romney that he should be onloading these securities. This would have occurred in 2008 and 2009 and show up on his tax returns.

I have no idea whether this is true because I have not seen Romney's tax returns. However, if it is true this would be a valid reason for Romney being so adamant about not releasing earlier tax returns. His hands would be dirtied by the housing crisis and he could be accused, along with Goldman, of insider trading. More
