Romney doubles down on Jeep attack in radio ad

Updated 4 p.m. ET — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign doubled down on its assertion about auto industry jobs moving to China with a new radio ad in northwest Ohio.

A Romney for president ad airing on Toledo, Ohio's classic rock station, WXKR, strongly insinuates that President Barack Obama's 2009 bailout of the auto industry has led to jobs shifting from the United States to China.

The narrator in the ad says:

Barack Obama says he saved the auto industry. But for who? Ohio or China? Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China which means 15,000 more jobs for China. And now comes word that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps is starting to build cars in, you guessed it, China. What happened to the promises made to autoworkers in Toledo and throughout Ohio? The same hard-working men and women who were told that Obama’s auto bailout would help them. Mitt Romney grew up in the auto industry. Maybe that’s why the Detroit News endorsed him saying ‘Romney understands the industry and will shield it from regulators who never tire of churning out new layers of mandates. Mitt Romney – he’ll stand up for the auto industry.  In Ohio, not China.

The radio spot follows a TV controversial ad playing to fears that Chrysler had plans to move production of Jeeps from the U.S. to China. Romney and other Republicans had previously given voice to errant reports suggesting such a shift, though those original reports referred only to capacity for production of vehicles in China for sale in China.

The TV ad drew extensive coverage in the media for its suggestion that Jeep was moving jobs to China at the expense of positions in the United States. Toledo, a prime swing territory in the battleground state of Ohio, is home to a major Jeep production facility.

The radio spot goes a step further in stoking fears that U.S. production of Jeeps would be moved offshore to China.

As First Read wrote on Monday, this series of ads — running during the closing days of the campaign — mark an effort by Romney to re-frame his opposition to the auto industry bailout and defend himself from Obama's attacks on the issue.

Romney and the Republicans are the party of YES WE CAN! Yes we can "double down" on the Chrysler lie," Yes we can hide information from the public--Tax returns, and best of all, Yes we can buy national and state elections. And we can tell them on Tuesday, "No you can't!"

In answer to your Post 282.1, I too have a similar thought about you: You are NOT THE SHARPEST KNIFE in the drawer.

You need to use your [what does not appear to be a properly matured] brain and think WHY would Fiat-Chrysler management, represented in your source by Mr. Sergio What-his-name, deny the Romney claim of Jeep outsourcing.

WHY? Because the project is still in the offing, for Pete's sake. Anyone who has been in business knows that such "friendly" conflict-generating business news are usually announced in the "11th hour" and certainly AFTER elections, when they become "fait accompli" and can't hurt the Sitting Powers running for re-election and having helped you with bailouts.

Regrettably, I'm not even being cynical!

Your argument reminds me of the song, "Trouble in River City" from the Music Man:"

      Ya got trouble,
Right here in River city! With a capital "T" And that rhymes with "P" And that stands for Pool.
      We've surely got trouble!

FYI: On the obscure site where I verified the lyrics, there was a Romney ad. Gosh. Money to spare.

The suckers that believe all the anti-Obama smear are not mentally capable of an informed vote. Perhaps literacy tests for white people are needed, or at least a note from a psychologist that they are not a literal threat to themselves or others. After Bush, we know that they are and economic threat to everybody but the 1%.

Thank you, still trying to figure out the lie part. The last paragraph states it as plainly as the first.

Fiat and Guangzhou’s plant in Changsha in central China has initial annual capacity of 140,000 cars and is capable of eventually assembling 500,000 vehicles per year. The automakers will add production of a new vehicle to the factory roughly every 12 months and began building the Fiat Viaggio compact there in June.

There are a lot of posts out there that are just hate mongering, and I just want to understand the fact. I beleive a 'news' article before I believe an opinion journalist.

you can copy and paste the above but you'll have to type in http:// first, and also remove the space between factcheck and the period, and between org and the first /

I have no idea why it won't just let me copy and paste.

Just because they will make all of the models that they now currently make; available to be manufactured in that country & for sale in that country, doesn't mean that they will move all of the US production to china. They are expanding in china.

Romney purposefully said that they will be MOVING ALL production to china. That implies US factories will be shut down. That implies that our tax money loaned to Chrysler was wasted. That is where Romney lied

You seem to be a fair-minded person, but that statement works both ways. Example: I've worked and paid taxes for 48 years, no food stamps, no welfare, but when I disagree with some supporters of Governor Romney, the reply I receive is "Get a job." The stereotyping has become ridiculous on both sides. I don't assume that everyone who supports Governor Romney is a racist or listens only to Fox or lives in a trailer park, and it would be nice if they did not stereotype those of us who disagree with them.

Build the jeeps here and export them to China, that's what Romney would do. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS!

Hard to believe that Mo Romney is doubling down on his lying Jeep ads.....after the Whitehouse and Chrysler told him that what he is saying is untrue.

Romney is so stressed at this point where he cannot keep track of all of his chinging positions and outright lies that get "bigger and bigger."

He is not only an unprincipled man, but a emotionally ill man, because these "double down Jeep ads" are helping President Obama.

If it's the truth, why is GM jumping on Romney's A$$ about his radio AD and Chrysler is jumping on him about what he said in Defiance. Don't tell me I know, they are beholding to Obama for his support in the auto rescue.

the filth and degradation of the GOP, MItt, Ryan, Karl Rove, Grover Norquist, et all is so eveident as they try and re-frame their mistakes and callousness towards the electorate. Mitt owned substantial shares of Delphi - know what happened to their employees and 25 of their 29 plants? well the profits were kept by Bain, pensioners got shafted and 25 plants went to China. This man is a liar beyond imagination.

Jeep is remaining here, their operations have been in China for some time as is Buick and Ford, tis how you do business in China. the lie is outrageous - Jeep is moving everything over there. Barack saved Detroit and the auto industry, and the GOp ignored the issue. How many jobs did Barack save? quite a few GOPers and we know that you have no plan except to unseat the sitting president. Mitt can go to hell, maybe get a posthumous baptism into the catholic cemetary.

After Romney lied about Jeep moving ALL of its production to China (which he read on a conservative blog) despite several stories that same week about the jobs that Chrysler has and is presently adding to its US Jeep production plants, Gualberto Ranieri SVP of Chrysler Communications started his statement by saying "Let's set the record straight. Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China." He then said that a careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg report would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.

The same week, various Detroit newspapers reported "About 1,100 new Chrysler employees will begin working next week...to meet continuing strong demand for the Jeep Grand Cherokee." "Chrysler is planning a similar work schedule that could involve hiring 900 to 1,000 new workers at its Warren assembly plant." "Chrysler is investing $500 million at its Toledo North assembly plant and plans to add 1,105 new workers."

So after receiving this information Romney surely stops the lies? No way. He continues by putting out a TV and Radio ad with more of the same false information, adding that 15,000 jobs are going from the U.S. to China.

This prompted Greg Martin, GM's spokesman to say "We've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days. No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country." To counteract the scare tactics by Romney, the CEO of Chrysler drafted an email to his employees saying, in part, "I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position. Jeep production will not be moved from the U.S. to China. Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand. It's inaccurate to suggest anything different." The rest of the email tells them about the $millions invested, the plant expansions, the jobs being added, etc. It's a good read and was printed by the Detroit Free Press, Oct 30th, with the headline "Chrysler's CEO Sergio Marchionne Calls Romney out for Jeep to China Lies"
