Romney doubles down on Jeep attack in radio ad

Updated 4 p.m. ET — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign doubled down on its assertion about auto industry jobs moving to China with a new radio ad in northwest Ohio.

A Romney for president ad airing on Toledo, Ohio's classic rock station, WXKR, strongly insinuates that President Barack Obama's 2009 bailout of the auto industry has led to jobs shifting from the United States to China.

The narrator in the ad says:

Barack Obama says he saved the auto industry. But for who? Ohio or China? Under President Obama, GM cut 15,000 American jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars built in China which means 15,000 more jobs for China. And now comes word that Chrysler plans to start making Jeeps is starting to build cars in, you guessed it, China. What happened to the promises made to autoworkers in Toledo and throughout Ohio? The same hard-working men and women who were told that Obama’s auto bailout would help them. Mitt Romney grew up in the auto industry. Maybe that’s why the Detroit News endorsed him saying ‘Romney understands the industry and will shield it from regulators who never tire of churning out new layers of mandates. Mitt Romney – he’ll stand up for the auto industry.  In Ohio, not China.

The radio spot follows a TV controversial ad playing to fears that Chrysler had plans to move production of Jeeps from the U.S. to China. Romney and other Republicans had previously given voice to errant reports suggesting such a shift, though those original reports referred only to capacity for production of vehicles in China for sale in China.

The TV ad drew extensive coverage in the media for its suggestion that Jeep was moving jobs to China at the expense of positions in the United States. Toledo, a prime swing territory in the battleground state of Ohio, is home to a major Jeep production facility.

The radio spot goes a step further in stoking fears that U.S. production of Jeeps would be moved offshore to China.

As First Read wrote on Monday, this series of ads — running during the closing days of the campaign — mark an effort by Romney to re-frame his opposition to the auto industry bailout and defend himself from Obama's attacks on the issue.

Mittens is a complete mess! He screams let Detroit go bankrupt and when Obama's auto industry bailout is a massive success and millions still have their jobs because of it - Mittens tries to take credit for it! Now he is just making sh!t up trying anything and everything to get one vote out of Ohio. SWING and a miss.

He is tied to making millions of dollars, and still is, by owning stock in China companies responsible for millions of US job losses. Even as Obama successfully challanges and wins unfair trade charges against China, Mittens is lying about how soft Obama is on China and how hard he'll be. SWING and a miss.

Now, as millions and millions of Americans suffer due to Hurricane Sandy - Mittens, who is against FEMA and would have it dismantled if he is elected, has the nerve to now act as though he cares for those impacted. Mittens is against the agency working to bring aid and medical assistance to those suffering. SWING and a miss Mittens.

This man is no where near qualified nor deserving of the honor and title of President of the US.

While this is a laughable but sad story about how low Romney will stoop to get a vote. Why is MSNBC reporting this story without a fact check follow up. Irresponsible reporting!!! Apparently people will just write anything and take it at face value and call it news reporting. What a shame! My 12 year old can do a better job than most reporters these days!!!!

In 1964 there was a "Lunatic Fringe" in the Republican Party. Today true conservatives and moderates are on the fringe and being pushed out by the base lunatics. The last liberal Republican died in bed decades ago.

Listen well voters.... this is what you can expect out of Romney Inc should the (horrible) happen and he manipulates/steals/lies his way into the presidency.

This ad alone is testimony/indictment to the character of Romney Inc -- and to whom he is beholden. The truth, common decency, and concern for all Americans are not values that his ilk hold.

This ad and the lies are indefensible!

Marchionnne also said Chrysler will expand Jeep production in China. Tuesday, October 30,2012

“We are working to establish a global enterprise and previously announced our intent to return Jeep production to China, the world’s largest auto market, in order to satisfy local market demand, which would not otherwise be accessible,” he said. “Chrysler Group is interested in expanding the customer base for our award-winning Jeep vehicles, which can only be done by establishing local production. This will ultimately help bolster the Jeep brand, and solidify the resilience of U.S. jobs.”

All Jeeps are built in the US and then shipped around the world even to its increasing Asian markets. The Jeeps sold in China will be produced in China. Just like the some of the foreign car plants that we have here in the US or would like for those plants to be closed? Plants that make Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Isuzu, and Subaru...even Mercedes-Benz. If you want those plants to produce only in their countries that would put a lot Americans out of jobs.

Under our current President our trade deficit has been increasing. Making American brand products in China does not help the situation. We need to increase exports and decrease imports in order to stop the flow of money out of the country.

Have you read the President's economic plan for the next 4 years. In general things in the plan are really defined but what is defined is mathematically impossible. The President failed to cut the deficit in half during his first 4 years and if reelected there will be nothing stooping him from doubling the debt in 8 years. I estimate that the money that the federal government is borrowing now is going to end up costing the tax payers more than ten times the amount borrowed to repay over the next 180 years. As the debt continues to grow the multiplier will also grow. Having to pay 10 times the going rate for goods and services is not good management.

It sounds like Fiat / Chrysler need to get the story straight in their own house. According to Bloomberg.com on Oct. 22, 2012:

"Fiat majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.

Fiat is in “very detailed conversations” with its Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market, said Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia."

To all of you calling Romney a liar, perhaps you should see where this message is coming from.

Make all of it's models, yes. Not shift production of every single vehicle. See, it is possible to build plants in China that make all the same models for the China market as plants in the US, while still keeping the US plants running for the US market. I know it's hard to believe. Take your time, we'll wait.

They aren't "moving" jeep production to China. They are re-opening production that has been shut down since before Fiat bought Chrysler.

"The important context left out is that Italian automaker Fiat was the only company that stepped up to make an offer for Chrysler, which badly needed another car company with which to partner. Fiat's intervention has kept the company in one piece, saved Chrysler from dissolution, increased the quality ratings of the company's products, raised its market share and profit, and resulted in a huge recovery of jobs in Michigan and Ohio."

Not only the fact that the implications are all lies, but that even Chrysler came out and repudiated the notion that jobs were moving to China, and questions the motivations of the Romney campaign. This is not about "controversial", it's about twisting the truth and lying. Don't be weak in your statements, because there's not way to put enough lipstick on this pig.

Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.

(2238), about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market, said Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia. Chrysler hasn’t built Jeeps there since before Fiat took control in 2009.

“The volume opportunity for us is very significant,” Manley, who is also president of the Jeep brand, said in an interview at Chrysler’s Auburn Hills, Michigan, headquarters. “We’re reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity” as well as “should we be localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio.”

Every car company that wishes to sell vehicles in China must build them in China in a joint venture with a Chinese automaker. There is no plan or idea for the company to build Jeeps in China that would be exported back to the U.S. Chrysler maintains a huge manufacturing plant in Toledo, Ohio to build Jeeps, and Fiat has been investing in that facility and growing the employment there."

Again "Thinking" long term ... you manage to twist information.

It is a significant difference between "may eventually make all of its models in that country" i.e. produce more than just Jeeps - FOR the Chinese market - in China... AND the LIES of Romney's ad i.e. that all of the production of all of the Jeeps with all of the associated jobs will be moved to China.

On the other hand, Romney is in a good position to understand about moving jobs to China -- since that is his only business practice. So, if that is what you want -- all jobs to be moved to China as that is what Romney is campaigning for - then by all means vote for him.

I, however, will stand proudly with our current President Obama who puts Americans and American jobs as the priority over personal wealth accumulation of the Romney/Ryan/Rove/Cheney ticket.

                                                    Willard's original lie:

"Mitt Romney campaigned in Defiance, Ohio, last night, and rolled out a new argument. "I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China," he said."
