KETTERING, OH — Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney collected donated supplies for hurricane victims on the East Coast on Tuesday, while urging supporters to give money to the Red Cross at a hastily arranged "relief event" in Ohio.
"Thank you for your help and your generosity," Romney told supporters, as he stood on a table surrounded by donated goods, at the location of a planned campaign rally this morning. "If you have a little extra, if you have more canned goods, bring them along to our victory centers that are open. But also if you can write a check to American Red Cross that's welcome as well. We're looking for all the help we can get for all the families in need."
Romney had been scheduled to hold a full-fledged campaign rally in this same building until late yesterday, when the campaign said it was scrapping Romney's political calendar as Hurricane Sandy approached the East Coast. Monday night, the campaign announced this morning's event was back on, but the focus would be storm relief — with Romney making no formal remarks, and no political agenda attached.
Attendees were asked by the campaign to bring donations of non-perishable goods, which are to be trucked to a Red Cross office in Sewell, NJ — or to give to the red cross directly.
Gov. Mitt Romney attended a storm relief event in Ohio, urging supporters to "make the difference in the life of one or two people" by donating goods to benefit the victims of Superstorm Sandy.
Romney's remarks were indeed without a political focus, with no direct mention of the election now just one week away, or of President Barack Obama or any specific campaign issue. After speaking and packing boxes, Romney and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman helped load the donated supplies into a truck for shipment, ignoring questions about whether he planned to tour storm damaged areas, and on his views of the future of FEMA.
Despite effort to the contrary, no political event can be entirely apolitical in late October of an election year, and some trappings of a rally remained here. Romney's long biographical video played once, well before Romney arrived at the venue, and outside the arena vendors sold buttons and hats to attendees as they left.
Mandy Hess, an administrative assistant at a medical office in Kettering who attended the event with her teenage son, said she wasn't bothered by the hint of politics mixed in with the relief effort.
"It's letting you know who he is as a person and what his roots are, and that people and family are what's important to him so I think that ties into the relief effort," Hess said.
The GOP nominee himself kept his focus on the storm victims, and tried to strike an uplifting tone, telling supporters that their effort, however small in the grand scheme of things, would matter.
"I know that one of the things I've learned in life is you make the difference you can," Romney said. "And you can't always solve all the problems yourself, but you can make the difference in the life of one or two people as a result of one or two people making an effort."
The campaign resumes in full force Wednesday, with Romney planning three rallies in Florida, while his vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan hits the trail in Wisconsin.

I caught Andrea Mitchell's rather biased and baited "report" this morning attempting to bring politics into every shred of a story MSNBC can air. As one of the few remaining "undecided" voters in America I can say, without a doubt, your slanted report just gave Romney/Ryan another family of votes. How sad to see a person actually given air time to question the motives of another American citizen , with the means, to help all those so badly impacted by Sandy. This was an act of mother nature over which no one had control. The president finally does his job? And Romney is slammed for doing what all we Americans will now do to help the victims? Sorry Andrea, alot of us cannot donate blood. And we're damn broke in America. Or didn't you get the memo? Benghazi? THAT the president had total control over. That was his job. And he let four Americans die. Thanks for making my choice this election crystal clear.

What you want is to use other people's money to buy food for you. Well, in an emergency, if you haven't prepared yourself, then you get to share with everyone else and what you need is food and medical supplies that will sustain your life, not let you live your life as you used to. You need help to get through until you can. The red cross will not give you money to buy your own kind of food. What a selfish little girl you are.
WHere do you propose they are going to go to "buy what they want to eat?" In this disaster, organizations that have the logistics in place will be bringing in food. The folks in shelters are not running out to the grocery store or McDonalds this evening to grab something to eat, they are depending on people providing food and other goods for them. I very strongly doubt they are fussy at this moment...I would think they are GRATEFUL to have a meal provided to them. I know I would be.

For those of you slamming Romney, Shame on You! This is what Mormons do. They help each other. Romney is not new to this, neither is this a political game he is playing. In almost every instance the very first responders are from the Mormon church. Either through the members in the neighborhood who have prepared already (I can assure you, almost all of them have FOOD stored), or by the church itself that sends truckloads or planeloads of food and medical supplies that it has already stored in its own warehouse in Salt Lake City and other locations. Shame on you for bashing a man who is trying to do something good. The Lord said by their fruits ye shall know them. Your fruits are distasteful and nasty. Some day those of you bashing Romney will be in need of food and shelter and clothing and you just might want that Mormon food.
If Romney is so quick to help in a disaster, he would know that bringing canned food to the Red Cross is NOT what they want or need. All he has to do is look at their website. The need MONEY and he has plenty of that! He's just in the way creating more work for people that have enough to do.
They hardly ever want canned food. Its the dollars, not out of date canned stuff that is going to lift people out of this. And maybe some bottled water.
I have a huge list of organizations in New York area that have specifically asking today for canned goods and other hard goods (hygiene supplies, water, etc.) that people can use immediately -- and for volunteers on the ground to support distributing them and working in shelters. Not the Red Cross, but many, many local organizations are looking for support for their shelters and food pantries. . You are absolutely incorrect that these items are not being need or requested.

He is out there trying to take advantage of a disaster/tragedy by getting a photo op and continuing his campaign even though he supposedly "cancelled" his rally. First or all, the Red Cross doesn't need canned goods. This just creates more work and unnecessary expense for the Red Cross who has to sort, transport, store, etc. If he had any sense at all he would read their website which explicitly tells people NOT to collect these types of things. Instead, they need MONEY in order to purchase the things that they really need. Mitt doesn't have a clue how to handle something of this magnitude. And to top that off, he doesn't want the government to run FEMA. He wants to abandon the states when a disaster strikes. No the Red Cross doesn't need canned goods. But, hungry people do. There are MANY organizations in the east asking specifically for prepared/canned foods and hygiene supplies (hard goods that people can use) today. MANY. I have collected a huge list of organizations asking for these things, it's all over the internet, but (ask an example) if you check hashtag sandyvolunteer on Twitter, you'll find many requests for hard goods.

New York City food banks are accepting canned good donations. There are MANY other places, but here is one that you can start with. If you are able to add to their pantry, here is the website with instructions about how to do that:

Boy are you wrong......The Church Romney belongs too helps people in Need every day.....Romney when he was Bishop and Stake President helped take care of the Poor and the NEEDY. Along with the Red Cross his church is the first to arrive to help during a disaster. This is a FACT, anyone who knows about the church welfare program knows why Romney was out helping, they also know what I am saying a FACT Not only was this not the first time but I assure it will not be the last time.....Check out what I am saying for yourself. If you really want to find out what Romney's true color is when disaster strikes,just look up what he did not do for Peabody & Greenfield Massachusetts when he was governor.This guy is incredible,hits Ohio with his false caring to get votes,but did not lift a finger to help his own people in Massachusetts.He left Greenfield dangling for days without relief.
