Romney set to return to hurricane-stricken Va. on Thursday

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will be the first candidate to campaign in hurricane-stricken Virginia with a rally on Thursday in the Richmond area.

The Virginia Republican Party released an invitation Tuesday morning to a Romney event in Doswell, Va. later this week, the GOP candidate's first trip to the state since preceding Hurricane Sandy.

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney walks off of his campaign bus at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Oct. 29, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The afternoon event was promoted by the Virginia GOP as a makeup for the rallies in Virginia the Romney campaign had scheduled for last Sunday. The Republican's campaign canceled those events so as to not distract resources from preparing for the hurricane, and subsequent relief efforts.

Northern Virginia — one of the state's population centers and a firm chunk of battleground territory — was more heavily affected by the storm; power outages and storm damages are thought to be less severe in central and southern Virginia, which includes Richmond and was not as severely struck by the hurricane. Moreover, Romney called Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) on Monday to consult about emergency preparedness.

MSNBC Political analyst and former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, Former Democratic Senator from Arkansas Blanche Lincoln and USA Today's Susan Page talk about where President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are Tuesday and how Hurricane Sandy could impact the last week before the election.

But the decision to return to Virginia for the first time carries a degree of sensitivity. President Barack Obama was set to resume campaigning later this week, though his schedule doesn't call for any stops in states most acutely affected by Sandy, including the battleground states of Virginia, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

But with the election just a week away, it's not clear that Romney could afford to stay out of Virginia much longer. His last visit to the state was on Oct. 17, for a rally in Leesburg.

Its sad to see all the mud sling and lies on these posts.

The facts are many of you will go to the polls based on those lies because many of you do not research the backgrounds of the candidates- their ideologies and accomplishments.

all I see here is a lot of bashing libtards and right wing nut Jobs and I can tell by the rhetoric that many of you have not researched the background of neither candidate and you are not going to find it on the biased internet or news channels.

You all are going have to go to the research section of the library and major bookstore to get it.

None of you have the biographies of nether candidate which is a start.

Obama is bad news and his personal relationships with Ayers and Soros and the agenda will be a rude aawakening for many of you.

I am An independent and am glad not to have any party affiliation to cloud my judgement on voting.

The recession was over in July 2009 and so the bad economy and the terrorist middle east uprising and the disgraceful Benghazi cover up are results of this administration's failed policies.

Yes I have casted my vote for Romney who is the best candidate to move us in the right direction.

    AJ

If you referring to me that depends as I have seen many insurance plans that fit my needs cheaper than the government allocation.

So when I become eligible in few years I will compare benefits vs cost and decide which is better traditional Medicare or take the voucher and get my own insurance free from government bureaucracy.

You dont get it do you AJ I have more choices and so will you and the best thing is that you don't have to return the cost savings back to the government. Its yours to keep.

I can tell by your comment that you live of the lies of NBC. even today I was watching the whoppers being told by O Donnell on his last word show. I have already informed the Des Moine Register how he was twisting and editing their statements and distorting the truth.

John you are such an idiot. The voucher system is a backdoor avenue to destroy medicare. A voucher and go negotiate with the insurance companies when you are in your mid to late 60s. Do you think insurance companies even want to sell you insurance and if they do what are the terms? You are one blind, stupid teabagger. When your retirement age with a voucher you have nothing, no options what so ever.

President Obama has maintained a five-point lead in the crucial swing state of Ohio, according to a new Quinnipiac University/CBS News/New York Times poll of likely voters. The survey found that Mitt Romney has gained ground in Florida and Virginia, where the race is now effectively tied.

I have done plenty of research...Romney is a scum sucking, spoiled rotten brat from childhood who has the oil companies in his pockets and wants to crush the middle class...he thinks the 47% of the country are people that are losers and don;t want to be succesful.

Those are his words, not mine...

I will vote for Obama because he does what is right....

This campaign does not say anything good about the American people and with someone who has out and out lied as much as Romney for the race to be this close says there is something really wrong on some level with the voters. If the next election is worse it will be ugly ugly ugly.

Christie does not have anything bad to say about Pres. Obama today, he is such a hypocrit like all other republicans. He should decline Federal help and that would be putting his money where his mouth is.

Prog, I'll give Christie this. he's a realist when it comes to the needs of his state, N.J. can't go it alone. Now a better question, why doesn't the Vaginal Prober McDonnell say not to federal $$, Va. can go it alone, after all Romney will get his army of carpet-baggers to move in pronto to fleece the disaster stricken. Perfect, private enterprise at its best.

            prog1,

Don't confuse politics with the government. Obama and the Democrats are not the governement. It is not the "Democratic funds", it is federal funds. Why would he not ask for federal help as the way it is today, that is the program. On a seperate note, it would be real stupid for you and your fellow Democratic majority if in fact Christie did say we are not taking any federal money or help.

Regarding African-American Voter Turnout in Early Voting

I'm a black male, and the amount of disrespect shown to President Obama, even in the face of the difficult scenario he faced in first being elected, is well-known by the black electorate.

We looked at the Tea Party emerge, and all of the racist, often misspelled signs carried by their astroturfers.

We looked at the outright lies that were told about the Affordable Care Act and the downright ugliness displayed to black members of Congress (being spat on).

We saw a Congressman yell, "You lie!" at the president during a State of the Union address.

We looked at the ugliness of the 2008 election and the downright filth of racism and bigotry that was released on the American electorate.

We looked at the signs depicting a watermelon patch on the front lawn, photos altered to make Michelle Obama look like a chimpanzee, and the attacks on the President's daughters.

We've observed every rightwing faux outrage at the First Family taking a vacation overseas and the fake pearl clutching that would never occur under a Republican President.

We've noticed the spike in hate groups emerging due to this President's first term as a result of this election.

We've seen a candidate in the Republican Primary (Newt Gingrich) call a sitting President the "Food Stamp" president.

We've seen another candidate in the Republican Primary (Rick Santorum) state that "blah" people only want money that is earned by other people.

We've seen people who are an absolute insult to the black political experience in this nation trotted out as "free thinkers," even though they are buffons (see Herman Cain and Allen West).

We've seen the President's citizenship questioned and his dead mother mocked and ridiculed as if though she was some harlot.

We've seen the Republican-held Congress obstruct any measure at an economic recovery that the President has attempted with the stalled Jobs Bill (even though the economy has improved, jobs have grown at over 5 million with 12 million slated for growth in the next few years and the unemployment rate down from its average high of 10.9% to 7.3%).

We've seen these rightwing @!$%# governors attempt to roll back public union rights, institute new voter ID measures and attempt to cut early voting, and institute these draconian measures on women's reproductive rights and health.

... but on the other hand ...

We've seen our nation bounce back from what likely would have been a second Great Depression had the president and Congress not intervened with spending.

We've seen the Affordable Care Act passed (and declared constitutional) and all of the humanity enshrined in the law (no denials for preexisting conditions, allowing young adults to stay on their parents' insurance plans until 26, the rebates, etc.).

We've seen the auto industry bounce back, as the Big 3 are now still the biggest auto manufacturers internationally (with their loan paid back with interest).

We've seen the weight of these United States placed on the shoulders of our current President, and him time and time again, hit the ball out of the park (see ordering Navy Seals to kill Somali Pirates, see the death of Osama bin Laden, etc.).

We've seen the President sign the Lilly Ledbetter Act (which of course affects African-American women just like any other).

We've seen the President show courage and take a Progressive stance on many issues (where many presidents, Democrats included, have failed).

We've seen the President bring a responsible end to the Iraq War and set a timetable for Afghanistan (in which many of our sons and daughters have fought and died).

We've seen the American financial sector bounce back, as well.

We see those beautiful daughters and that drop dead gorgeous wife handle all of the ugliness, vitriol, and hate that is thrown at them daily with only the grace that they would know how.

We've seen many more things, as well. I'm not sure if you'll se a 90% African-American voter turnout, but ...

              You're damned right we're MAD.

You're damned right we're FIRED UP.

You're damned right we're READY TO GO (and VOTE).

              FOUR MORE YEARS!

Why shouldn't FEMA be a state issue versus federal? How many states in the last 50 years have used FEMA resources? What percent of states such as Ohio use FEMA dollars? In other worss how are these federal funds spent and for each state? Why should I pay for other states and people who get the benefit of living at or near beaches, yet get no use of those beaches on a daily basis.

Sorry, folks it is crap that the entire country has to pay for all this crap? The biggest issue we have in Ohio is tornadoes and I guarantee you tornado damage is nowhere near hurricane damage. States should have to develop their own funds to cover for natural disasters. It is not fair for others to pay because those folks chose to reside in tropical climates or along ocean fronts.

BTW Gene. All states have taken FEMA help. Some more than others but we are one country, not 50 separate countries and it benefits all of us to help out. Where would this country be if we did not have a world class port in New Orleans.

Again, why is this not a state issue? Why do other states pay for natural disasters? Weather and climate are a reality. People flock to the tropical areas r close to the beach. It is known fact these are dangerous areas, but majority of time are great. Sorry, but why should other US citizens pay for the risks of others?

Ann Romney traveled through Iowa and my hometown yesterday. I understand it was called a fundraiser for hurricane relief, but it sure felt ALOT like a campaign event. Just like McCain, you should not claim to suspend your campaign and then hold campaign events.
