Romney set to return to hurricane-stricken Va. on Thursday

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will be the first candidate to campaign in hurricane-stricken Virginia with a rally on Thursday in the Richmond area.

The Virginia Republican Party released an invitation Tuesday morning to a Romney event in Doswell, Va. later this week, the GOP candidate's first trip to the state since preceding Hurricane Sandy.

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney walks off of his campaign bus at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Oct. 29, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The afternoon event was promoted by the Virginia GOP as a makeup for the rallies in Virginia the Romney campaign had scheduled for last Sunday. The Republican's campaign canceled those events so as to not distract resources from preparing for the hurricane, and subsequent relief efforts.

Recommended: Storm aftermath not likely to delay election

Northern Virginia — one of the state's population centers and a firm chunk of battleground territory — was more heavily affected by the storm; power outages and storm damages are thought to be less severe in central and southern Virginia, which includes Richmond and was not as severely struck by the hurricane. Moreover, Romney called Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) on Monday to consult about emergency preparedness.

MSNBC Political analyst and former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, Former Democratic Senator from Arkansas Blanche Lincoln and USA Today's Susan Page talk about where President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are Tuesday and how Hurricane Sandy could impact the last week before the election.

But the decision to return to Virginia for the first time carries a degree of sensitivity. President Barack Obama was set to resume campaigning later this week, though his schedule doesn't call for any stops in states most acutely affected by Sandy, including the battleground states of Virginia, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

But with the election just a week away, it's not clear that Romney could afford to stay out of Virginia much longer. His last visit to the state was on Oct. 17, for a rally in Leesburg.

'He's Pandering that slime ball'. Obama does it because he cares.

Hey Libs, did you guys have your morning meeting? Are you going to play the Race Card? Have any religious bigotry or hypocrisy to throw around today? Are you going to mock Repubs for thinking O is going to declare 'Marshall' Law.

Updated as of 11:00am EST on Tuesday, October 30:

Real Clear Politics (RCP) is consistently cited by both FOXNEWS and NBCNEWS as a current source for reliable averaged polling data at every level of American politics.

RCP continues to consider the following eleven states, listed in descending order of electoral votes, as "toss-up": Florida (FL), Pennsylvania (PA), Ohio (OH), Michigan (MI), North Carolina (NC),Virginia (VA), Colorado (CO), Wisconsin (WI), Iowa IO), Nevada (NV) and New Hampshire (NH).

With only 157 hours left in the 2012 presidential campaign, Obama leads in seven of the toss-ups, Romney leads in two, and in CO and VA as of Saturday the candidates are now tied.

In descending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Obama, followed in ascending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Romney, here are the published averaged numbers from RCP as of 11:00am EST today together with the FiveThirtyEight election night probability of victory for either candidate:

.

In PA, with 20 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 4.7%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 94.2% chance of winning PA.

.

In MI, with 16 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 4.0%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 98.1% chance of winning MI.

.

In NV, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 2.4%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama an 79.7% chance of winning NV.

.

In WI, with 10 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 2.3%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama an 85.7% chance of winning WI.

.

In IO, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 2.3%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 70.9% chance of winning IO.

.

In NH, with 4 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 2.0%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 70.3% chance of winning NH.

.

In OH, with 18 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 1.9%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 73.3% chance of winning OH.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In VA, with 13 electoral votes, the race remains tied.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 57.8% chance of winning VA.

.

In CO, with 9 electoral votes, the race remains tied.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 55.4% chance of winning CO.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In FL, with 29 electoral votes, Romney's lead has fallen to 1.3%, down from yesterday's 1.4%.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Romney a 64.7% chance of winning FL.

.

In NC, with 15 electoral votes, Romney's lead is holding at 3.0%.

FiveThirtyEight gives Romney an 81.4% chance of winning NC.

.

For Obama to win re-election, the least complex route appears to be through maintaining his current lead in the four toss-up states in which his existing margins are widest, PA, MI, NV, and WI, together with OH where his lead has been hovering at a vulnerable 2.0% for the past few days. Doing so would bring his electoral vote total on Election Day to 271. In this scenario, Obama could still surpass 270 while failing to hold either IO or NH.

However, should Obama fail to hold OH, the loss could effectively be neutralized by any of the following combination of wins from states where FiveThirtyEight is currently predicting Obama victories:

Path #1: Obama loses OH but wins IO, NH, and CO resulting in 272 electoral votes.

Path #2: Obama loses OH but wins IO and VA resulting in 272 electoral votes.

Path #3: Obama loses OH but wins CO and VA resulting in 275 electoral votes.

However, regarding Path #1, there is some question as to the accuracy of the RCP polling numbers in NH which still include in their average a recent 'outlier' finding from UNH which had Obama leading by a questionable 9.0%.

For Romney to unseat Obama, he not only would have to hold the two states in which he presently leads, FL and NC, bringing his electoral vote total to 235, but also steal victories in CO where his lead fell from 0.4% on
Friday to that of dead heat, in VA where his lead fell from 1.0% on Saturday to another dead heat, and finally with OH where Obama's lead this morning is 1.9%. By so doing, Romney's electoral vote total would reach 275.

Should Romney take CO and VA but fail to take OH, he could overcome this shortfall by stealing WI and either IO or NH, resulting respectively in an electoral vote total of 273 or 271.

FiveThirtyEight, at present, estimates the chance of Election Day victory for each candidate as follows: Obama 72.9% - Romney 27.1%.

FiveThirtyEight also projects that on Election Day the final electoral tally will be as follows: Obama 295 -Romney 243.

Lastly, although it makes no difference in terms of the final result which can only be determined by the Electoral College, FiveThirtyEight also projects a national popular vote distribution on Election Day as follows: Obama 50.3% - Romney 48.8%.

With only 157 hours of campaigning left, this one may come down to the wire….and to the October jobs report which because of Hurricane Sandy may be delayed from a scheduled Friday release to the following Monday, one day before the election.

Let's hope that Election Day is free of both voter fraud and voter intimidation and that eligible voters who have registered in good faith over the past six months are in fact able to vote on November 6; let's also hope that vote tabulation itself is performed honestly and accurately by both the election commissions and private corporations to whom this essential role is being entrusted.

In any case, it will be interesting to watch as election night unfolds.

Electoral College Model Predicts Romney Will Win Even Bigger Than Previously Thought in 2012

University of Colorado Professors Ken Bickers and Michael Berry and their highly-accurate Electoral College prediction model. As you may recall, Bickers and Berry, using their metrics, are able to retroactively predict every presidential win since 1980.

Their 2012 model made headlines two months ago because, despite polling, it found that Republican presidential candidate Romney would win 320 Electoral Votes, stealing the White House away from President Barack Obama. Now, an updated version of their study has come to the same conclusion — but it intensifies the numbers behind a predicted Romney win.

Despite the fact that polls still show a dead-heat race (Obama is currently at 48.2 percent, with Romney capturing 47.3 percent of likely voters in the most recent Real Clear Politics average), an updated election model shows an even larger gap between the Electoral College votes that Romney and Obama are projected to win. According to Bickers and Berry, the Republican challenger is projected to take 330 of the 558 votes, while Obama is expected to capture only 208 of them.

Romney will carry New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida. On the flip side, Obama will take Michigan and Nevada.

While many election forecast models are based on the popular vote, the model developed by Bickers and Berry is based on the Electoral College and is the only one of its type to include more than one state-level measure of economic conditions. They included economic data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

nah nah nah nah......nah nah nah nah....hey hey hey.....GOODBYE!!!!

No Caesar, but us libs are standing by Republican Governor Chris Christie and his thanks to President Obama for the President's support for federal aid to help those devastated by Sandy.

BTW, as resident of the northeast who lives in the direct path of Sandy, I sit here watching the news of floods and fires, power outages, homes destroyed, and I can only say you are one despicable person for blasting those that are trying to help. Even Governor Christie put aside partisan attacks and acknowledged the help his state will receive from the federal government.

So, keep up your biased political hack-job. I hope you stand alone.

THe only reason BO is in the WH getting his daily FEMA & weather reports is because he got dressed down for speaking in the Rose Garden in the a.m. and hopping the taxpayers jet to Nevada & CO for fundraisers AFTER 4 Americans were murdered. So NOW he needs to appear "presidential". Sorry too little too late to act like you give a crap -- after the election it will be business as usual. Arrogant bully. He can't work with ANYONE!

I wonder if he's going to sing FEMA's praises or if he's going to tell victims of Sandy what he really thinks of federal disaster relief? Mittens seems pretty desperate these days. Meanwhile, we're getting a very good example of what a real LEADER does for Americans (not just 53%) when the going gets tough.

Of course CA you know that most state emergency planning activities are either directly or indirectly funded by by the Federal Government> Why here in the teabag state of Arizoneee the Department of Emergency Planning is directly funded by a $5,000,000. grant from the Feds.

Never ever confuse a conservative with the facts.

But hell, let's turn that over to the States and raise taxes locally. We don't need to spread the risk. Every state should be on it's own. Local control by local hacks dontcha know!

Romney urging people to donate to the Red Cross is just another feeble attempt at deflection and a false equivalency argument. The red cross just doesn't have the resources and logistics to help all those in need.

You republicans really take the cake when it comes to contextual retardation. I doubt you understand the concept or meaning of retroactive, but it's the easiest way to scam fools into believing that you can also predict the weather tomorrow, or the stock markets, or anything else for that matter. The past doesn't predict the future, but it is great entertainment for people looking backwards in history for a reason to justify repeating the same mistakes again tomorrow. Keep up the great work of defining your party as the party of clueless. Meanwhile, call up your boy Chris Christie and tell him to stop begging for a federal disaster bailout like a damn socialist. Let free market principles and state power handle this disaster like your party believes it should. We can't afford to bail them out and we should let them go through bankruptcy to fix the problems if they can't afford to cover the costs of disaster recovery with their own state money. Sound republican logic, so I hope your party will stick by it's words in action not just lip service.

Mitt Romney already showing the courage and leadership we need in this country. Understanding the support and help Americans need he agrees to go into devastated Virginia.

This is the type of humble leadership by example we have been lacking for 4 long years. It's time to end this horrible social experiment of 2008, it has failed miserably.

America needs leadership with domestic, economic and foreign policies that benefit the people not cronies. Mitt Romney understands governance and economics. Barrack Husseins experience of organizing picnics in Chicago and writing a couple books, ABOUT HIMSELF, have proven his abject incompetence.

It's time we have a leader who promotes American exceptionalism, not mediocrity.

Romney has to watch his step. Romney would have been better served to join Chris Christie in his comments as opposed to resuming his campaign.

CA, you continually deflect and have not addressed the issues raised about "local control" which Romney favors and the Red Cross which does not have the resources or logistics to support a massive relief effort.

As far as PTSD is concerned , Republicans failed to fund treatment during the Bush years. (Mickey is out of line in his comments). This president has supported PTSD treatment for returning Vets to the max. Even you cannot give credit where credit is due.

Saw Romney on TV today comparing his having to clean up a football field as a kid to what is happening on the east coast............

couldn't believe it.

Even despite the national deficit the republicans governors of New York and New Jersey are already singing praises of President Obama for his commitment to helping them what ever they need and having FEMA on stand by even before this hit. That is what a real President does......he does not tell states to fend for themselves he helps them with all resources available to him and this is no less than Americans expect of him...........I'd sure rather put this on our Chinese credit card and actually be helping people than put HUGE tax breaks for the uber wealthy on our Chinese credit card--and apparently both republicans governors or New York and New Jersey are very grateful that FEMA is there and functioning for them.

That is the thing about republicans that always bothers me..........they don't plan for stuff like this...they think everyone is a free loader and everyone should be looking out for themselves and no one else.........well, accidents and disasters happen and federal aid along with state aid is necessary to help effected Americans to get through these times.

Thank goodness for relief programs, insurance, federal aid, state aid and national and community support.........as we can all see it takes all of us working together to thwart hardships and this idea that republicans run on that it is ok to pit Americans against each other, as I see outraged republicans doing on this vine, is morally and ethically wrong. There will always be people who need help, there will always be disasters and thank goodness there will always be folks willing to give money and time to help them....people who need help are not free loaders--they are folks in nonfortuitous desperate situations who we as a nation should feel morally and ethically obliged to help....this includes, medicare, welfare, free lunch programs, FEMA, free medical clinics...the list is longer. How can we, with good conscience, give Huge tax breaks to people so wealthy they will NEVER want for anything, while denying those who have NOTHING?!

Mitt Romney said on television during a debate that FEMA's responsibilities should be put on the states and it would be even better if it could be put on the private sector.......he said it was immoral to use FEMA.....he said basically it cost too much......

immoral to help people in disasters?!!!......it cost too much?!!!!............so there you have it, on top of the republicans hating women, people of color, old people, poor people and teachers (while loving rich people and war) they now have shown us that they have no problem putting a dollar worth on human life.............to Mitt and his ilk people caught in disasters are not WORTH going into debt to help....

but borrowing 5 trillion from China to pay uber rich folks a huge tax break is.........

after hearing out of Mitt's own mouth, I'm sure his people will come out and tell us all how that is not what their candidate meant to say, how nonchalantly he leaves Americans in disaster to lose everything they have and even their lives is good business and giving tax breaks to uber rich is good business..............how can anyone vote for this heartless person?!

Human life is priceless...............what kind of people believe in an ideology that sacrifices human life for tax breaks for the wealthy?...........sacrifices human life for balancing the books........

everything we do as Americans, in our daily lives, in our businesses is for people.......our families...for everyone.........we are a nation of people...we the people...we are not a nation of wealthy and power...wealthy and power are tools, tools we use to help our people.

It's about people Mitt, not about money.

And if you had just lost everything and were standing in chest deep water watching your family being swept away by flooding water you would know that..........it is not just about YOUR family, it is about all Americans....you, MR. Romney need to reevaluate your definition of morally right and ethically right...because this is nothing like cleaning up a football field with your rich preppy friends...........this is real life like most people live......not the privileged carefree life of ease and security you have led....

how can you know how to help the 98% when you have NEVER experienced ANYTHING even remotely similar?..............it is truly not about money, Mitt, it is about people.

GOT IT!!

See im not familiar with Romney's stance on it other than a few passing snide remarks. For local control with Fed aid may be a better approach right? I mean how many 'Fed' organizations do we need to help Americans? Hey Torp how many law or para law enforcing ones do we have already? I'll start FBI, CIA, NSA, ATFBE, ICE, TSA, DEA, US MARSHALLS (not law) etc. where does the line get drawn. Im not saying FEMA needs to go but perhaps it would be wise to re-evaluate some of our government agencies.

One of the big reasons there were federal failures during Katrina is the Fed was trying to do what it understood to be right, in an area that the ideas were totally out of place.

State and local control with federal support would work much better provided people don't make bad mistakes in whom they elect like the Louisiana Governor and New Orleans Mayor.

What a bastard Romney is,...to be focused on his underhanded campaign,...as the people are reeling from the damage inflicted by hurricane Sandy.

How callous of Romney to hold a "relief rally" in Ohio at this time !! OMG. Just think of that, so UNGODLY self-serving . He must think they are pret-ty gullible to not be able to see right through that. SHAMEFUL !!

BTW,...Mitt Romney wants to eliminate FEMA !! How ironic is this turn of events ?

Everyone should understand that Romney's finishing strategy is to simply bombard the media and everyone's senses with ads,...ads,...ads that speak negatively about the president. Romney's messages do not ring true and are just CONSERVATIVE PROPAGANDA. It has been their goal to oppose everything about Obama's administration since day one of his administration - unconditionally. It's all a power play on behalf of their wealthy corporate masters.

Obama has accomplished a lot given the circumstances he was handed due to years of failed conservative policies. OBAMA NEEDS AND DESERVES ANOTHER FOUR YEARS.

A time like this is the PERFECT example of why we need to continue to think of ourselves as a COUNTRY OF PEOPLE not simply investors and competing business interests.

NOW we may again see clearly what it means to be,..and to have,...and to NEED a neighbor.

It will be awkward to watch Mitt Romney try to feign conservative compassion for the citizens he plans to kick to the curb and abandon with his corporate welfare policies.

There IS a need for the guiding hand of government. There IS a need for taxes. There IS a need for social programs. There IS a reason to watch each other's back.

I don't know if it is God,...or just fate,...but THIS hurricane happened at THIS time before THIS election for a reason.

Our leaders' job is now to unite the people of the region to try to recover from this catastrophe. Should we think of this use of tax money as redistribution of wealth ? Where is the return for our investors ? Now that we are "all in it together",...we will all be in it together.

BUT as the GOP has seen the perfect financial storm gathering over the past generatrion all they can think of is how to distance themselves from those who are struggling. More tax breaks and bonuses and huge salaries and vacation home for ME,....and more pink slips and stagnant wages and less benefits for YOU.

BASTARDS >>>and that is to say they act like they have no country,...or no father,...or no family. The new right is uniquely un-American.

This is a country of "We the people".

If you care about your neighbor,....if you care about the majority of US citizens,....if you care for the America that was before this era of unprecedented greed and self-interest,...vote Obama/Biden on Tuesday, November 6th 2012.

Please, please, please,...come out to the polls and vote.

Say no to Ayn Rand's "ethical egoism and pure self-interest",.....and come back to American values, family values and "ethical altruism".

This is the wealthiest country in the world.

There IS enough for us to help our neighbors in need.

Let's support our fellow American citizens as they recover from hurricane Sandy.

God bless America,...God bless the PEOPLE of America.

Debbie McCarten

You seem to be consumed by the “immorality” statement.

Lemme ax you a question.

What about these following statements do you find “moral”?

The federal government made at least $125 billion in improper payments in 2011.

Washington spends $92 billion on corporate welfare (excluding TARP) versus $71 billion on homeland security.

Washington spends $25 billion annually maintaining unused or vacant federal properties.

Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them–costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually–fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve. (I recommend you read this one a few times to truly understand its impact)

The Congressional Budget Office published a “Budget Options” series identifying more than $140 billion in potential spending cuts.

Examples from multiple Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports of wasteful duplication include 342 economic development programs; 130 programs serving the disabled; 130 programs serving at-risk youth; 90 early childhood development programs; 75 programs funding international education, cultural, and training exchange activities; and 72 safe water programs. Estimates of the cost range between $200 billion and $400 billion annually.

The Institute of Medicine recently reported that health care fraud is estimated to cost taxpayers more than $750 billion annually.

If you’d like I can give you about 400 more examples of our governments rampant waste, fraud, abuse and corruption.

Do you find what or government does with our hard earned tax dollars with this level of waste moral?

We understand you bleeding-heart Liberals deal with most problems emotionally, that’s fine in your personal relationships. When it comes to governance there is a point where continuing to just blindly believe in a massive bureaucracy that disregards responsibility, accountability and transparency must be addressed.

Romney understands how criminal our government has become and how immoral it is to the constituency it’s purported to serve.

"I was on the phone for the third time yesterday, last night, with the president of the United States. He called me at midnight last night as he was seeing reports," he said before adding that President Obama accelerated the designation of New Jersey as a major disaster area "without the usual red tape."

"The cooperation has been great with FEMA here on the ground and the cooperation from the president of the United States has been outstanding. He deserves great credit," Christie added.

If Romney really wanted to show he was worth his salt he would be out helping people instead of politicizing this and trying find a way to benefit from the disaster and pain of others. He would be helping rather then scheming. The man would rather try to find a way to financially benefit from it then actually helping the country. He is the last person who is worthy to be president. I would have seriously considered voting for Christie. He maybe abit gruff but he is a genuine person who cares about his state and the country. Romney and Ryan would stand in front of a camera and pretend to be shoveling sand and then left after the cameras were gone. Romney doesnt care..hes got his 12million dollar mansion to go home to..what does he care about all these people who just lost their homes? The man is the biggest phoney I ever saw. He tried to get rid of FEMA in 2004 in MA but they didnt let him.

Jim

Debbie is talking about real people not beaurocrats like you. You are obviously one of the Romney worshippers who would come crying to the government for assistance if your lawn got alittle too many leaves on it.
The abuse you speak of came from a system that needs to be overhauled and revamped ..not by everyday people so get off your high horse and quit trying to make it look like the everyday man is to blame for the fraud and overbilling of beaurocrats who tried to "game" and "play" the system. Corporate greed is the problem not the everyday man..

How long did it take the President to resume his campaign after our citizens were murdered in Libya?

Fox worked over-time this morning on the Libya horror, that's one of the reasons so many republican adherents are blasting the fox brand. The Senate resident troll, McCain, did his bit for the Romney spam drive. funny, how Fox and Romney surrogates are all in lock-step? Rove must be using a bull horn. Pretty obvious Romney's intent at his spam-o-rama today, videos and other political props abounded. Didn't Christie tell Romney not to show up in New Jersey, that Christie had better things to do than host Romney?

Never fear, Mitt, the Vaginal Prober welcomes you to tour. Don't forget folks one is judged by the company they keep.

Romney's own words are coming back to bite him in the ass. Romney set to tour hurricane ravaged Virginia. I wonder how many Romney voters there and everywhere else the storm has devasted that Romney is right, that FEMA should be cut and let the states and private citizens clean up their own areas because FEMA puts too much of a tax burden on the taxpayers.

Romney wanted to send televisions to the people that was hit very hard by hurricane Katrina, TV's to people without homes or electricty. Now he wants to send canned goods to the people hit by this storm. I'm not making this stuff up, This is the real Romney, a very rich guy that has no idea what you or I need or want.

My best guess would be, the Romney voters that post here now are in areas not hit by this storm so everything is still normal for them, but the people hit by this storm do-not want too hear Romney's speeches or see him with boxes of canned goods. A lot of them are without homes, where would they put the food?

Romney was asked by reporters over twenty times, if elected are you still going to cut FEMA, his answer, silence,he ignored them, he and other guys wearing suits and ties loading boxes into a truck, Governor Romney we all know that was fake, but at least make the guys take off their jackets and ties, you could have made it a little bit believeable that you really care.

Vote for Romney and you can be sure of one thing, if your house is destroyed by a tornado, he'll give you a box of canned goods.

Here is a good look at how Willard handles natural disasters;

The town could handle distributing donated shirts and juice. But Greenfield, with its population of 18,000, couldn't repair this level of loss, which had been estimated to exceed $1 million. Forgey said she needed the state government to respond and for Romney to declare an emergency. But for days, Greenfield residents were on their own, with limited outside help. "We really didn't get the response we were looking for," she says. "I had to declare a state of emergency ... We really needed help desperately, desperately."

On the first day, Forgey says she did not hear from Romney. Nor the second day. Nor the third.

Romney wasn't in Massachusetts when the flood hit, and the emergency did not alter his plans. The Associated Press reported at the time that the governor had been scheduled to speak to an economic club in North Carolina. "If the governor thought for one second he was needed here today, he would be there," a spokesperson told the AP.

Even after returning to Boston, Romney still hadn't talked to Forgey or visited the flood-affected areas. "The governor's office hasn't even acknowledged that it's rained," Democratic state Rep. Christopher Donelan complained to the Boston Globe.

It would be three days since the rains began and only after heavy criticism from the local press -- which began to make comparisons to the Hurricane Katrina disaster response -- before the governor ventured to Greenfield to the shake the hands of the flood victims.

Say what you will ..you have just shown everyone how small and petty some people will become to try to justify bad behavior.

Lets look at it like this...if Romney cared he would be out there getting his hands dirty but he doesnt so he is trying to figure out a way to benefit from the disaster by going to VA and try to look like he gives a squat. We all know the truth.

Obama is doing what a good president does..Romney would have buckled. He couldnever take the pressure and he doesnt really care for others.

While your at it perhaps you can also explain why O's numbers continue to slide considering he's the incumbent and secondly has been so successful in the Oval Office. You think he he's be enjoying mid 50's or greater in the polls

Sometimes the liberal posters on these sites are amazing. If the President is so good why is this race even close. I in the past have voted for Democrats and Republicans. I voted for the current Pres. last time but will not support him this time as I do not believe he has come even close to achieving any of the promises he has put forth.

As far as who wins it will be a close race. I do believe the President (and I think he believes it also) is in serious trouble. The polls in Ohio are virtually tied with about 4% still undecided. Does anyone really believe these folks are going to vote for the incumbent?

I also believe that if somehow the President does prevail his next term with be a very trying one on him. At some time he is going to have to answer for Libya and Fast and Furious. I don't see either one of these having a happy ending for the administration.

How could his next term possibly be a trying one? Since he can't run for re-election again, he can do whatever he wants without worrying about political backlash. As far as those two issues are considered, nothing will come of them. The first matter has only been brought up to stir up support for Romney. Once the election is over, it will disappear. The second matter was only brought up to get rid of Eric Holder. Since they discovered they couldn't get rid of him, the whole thing has disappeared from the radar. The only ones who bring it up are those who want to express their hatred toward the President.

Dogs80: I'm going to leave the fire-breathing rhetoric aside for the moment and address your first (and very reasonable) question civilly; who knows, we just might be able to have an exchange of very different ideas without it degenerating into a mud-slinging match (see me and Elliott, above):

The one salient fact, which the Right denies and the media ignores, is that the Republican leadership had their collective mind made up right from the beginning that, no matter what this President tried to achieve, no matter what he proposed, they would block and oppose him at all costs, no matter how much the country was made to suffer in the process.

You needn't take the word of a Lefty like me; look up Eric Cantor. Ask Mitch McConnell. Hell, look at Paul Ryan- he was one of the pioneer group of obstructionists.

Republicans in their dozens are going to jump on me hollering, "NO MORE EXCUSES, IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS!" I am not deflecting the blame nor am I making excuses; I am simply stating a fact, of which the Republican caucus is very proud: NO president, faced with such opposition, and so much filibustering, could have been expected to get much done. By any objective measurement, Obama's first term has been remarkable.

However, the disloyal opposition has hit on a foolproof winning strategy: They LIE. They lie consistently, repeatedly, and LOUDLY. They lie so much and so regularly that a large part of the American people, including those who have been most helped by this President's policies, are hell-bent on seeing him fail, no matter how much working Americans are hurt in the attempt!

Your mentioning Fast and Furious is a perfect example of that. Everbody knows that Obama's AG, Eric Holder, was held in contempt of Congress; but did you hear from the "Liberal Media" that the final report found NO wrongdoing on the part of this administration for continuing a program begun under Bush? No, of course not! There's no 'red meat' for the media when somebody is found innocent.

You seem like a pretty reasonable guy, so I'm trying to talk to you like one. Your thoughts are welcomed. By the way, my own favorite John Wayne movie is still "Big Jake", and I thought the remake a couple of years ago of "True Grit", while of course it couldn't touch the original, was at least true to The Duke's spirit. Yes, liberals admire him too!

Virginia was minimally affected by hurricane Sandy.

          @Adam44

          http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Hurricane-Sandy--176304231.html

An Alexandria apartment building had its roof torn open by strong winds from superstorm Sandy, and the city is bracing for possible flooding in Old Town.

Alexandria spokesman Tony Castrilli says about 20 people in a garden-style apartment building on Kenmore Avenue were evacuated when the roof was damaged by the wind. The building was condemned, and residents all found places to stay.

Alexandria officials plan to distribute sandbags on Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Market Square in front of City Hall. Castrilli says the sandbags are primarily for business owners along the riverfront.

Many homes in Alexandria have tree damage.

But if you'd prefer, here's the DC Fox coverage:

          http://www.myfoxdc.com/category/249944/tracking-hurricane-sandy

Or how about the Fox coverage for the coast of VA?

          http://www.fox43tv.com/

Or even ABC in the Hampton Roads area?

          http://www.wvec.com/

Or how about the NBC affiliate in Charlottesville (one of the TV stations that covers situations that impact my family)

          http://www.nbc29.com/story/19953639/downed-trees-and-power-outages-left-in-wake-of-superstorm-sandy

Granted, Virginia did not get the devastation that NJ and NY saw, but to say that VA was "minimally affected by hurricane Sandy" really is an insult to those whose houses are damaged or are without power. In addition, the Blue Ridge saw up to and over 2 feet of SNOW because of Sandy.

          http://www2.wsls.com/weather/2012/oct/30/2/more-rain-and-snow-winds-decrease-ar-2323300/

THINK before you post. Just because conditions are much worse elsewhere does not mean that damage and power outages are "minimal".

dogs- yes, I'm ashamed that over half the people in this state may vote for Romney. But, in the area that I grew up, many people had the same sort of thinking (keep the wimmenfolk barefoot and pregnant, serving her man and doing what he says), so I'm not suprised.

Luckily, it seems likely that we'll get to keep Claire. Akin just creeps me out.

Adam is right.......I live in Northern Va. and we were expecting far worse. Our power stayed on after some flickering.......some trees down and minor flooding in low lying areas. Alexandria ALWAYS gets flooding even in the summer with thunderstorms. Richmond saw some rain and wind but Virginians are hearty people and will be glad to have Mitt come and give us hope for the future!

Virginians just saw what could have happened to their state had Sandy tracked just a little to the south. If that had happened they know that Obama would be sending in the type of assistance our country can provide when every state comes together as the United States of America. On the other hand, Romney would be talking about how States must take responsibility for their own welfare because it is immoral to help our countrymen if it is going to cost anything.

Bottom line. Romney does not believe in any help from the Government (FEMA). But I'm sure he is more than willing to drop a can of soup into a barrel. Just what a guy needs when he has lost everything .... free soup and the knowledge that Mitt has you in his prayers.

This may be a good thing. Perhaps the first question Romney can answer is how his plan to gut FEMA and privatize disaster assistance would worked out for all those currently effected.

Of course we should also be prepared for yet another reversal claiming how much he supports FEMA and the outstanding work it will be doing for these disaster areas

Romney's heading to Virginia because the numbers in that State are trending away from him.

Although RCP currently has the race listed as a dead heat, it was anything BUT just a week or two ago when Romney held a solid lead.

At present, FiveThirtyEight has Obama's chances of victory in Old Dominion at 57.8%.

Should Obama fail to hold Ohio, Virginia is the linchpin in two of his three alternate paths to victory. As such Romney has no choice but to try to stop the bleeding.

The added bonus is that it also affords Romney the chance to appear presidential in the face of tragedy...except that the deeper tragedies are a wee bit north in the decidedly Blue States of Ney Jersey and New York.

            Draw your own conclusions....

How can Mitt act Presidential in a disaster when one of the main things the President does is mobilize the resources of the federal government, especially FEMA, and Mitt is on record as wanting to privatize disaster relief?

Steeler Fan! What a concept! Privatizing disaster releif so those impacted by the disaster; those who have lost everything they own can now pay a profit to those who come to help.

It always comes down to profit with Mitt. How can he gain a profit from another's loss?

            Everybody sing!

Steeler Fan...sorry, I just have to ask - what is up with your NFL uniforms? Off topic, I know. But seriously, who made that decision? I had a hard time staying focused on the game because I was watching these bee guys running around. I liked your old uniforms much better. And awesome game, too.

Look out Virginia! Here comes the "Crazy Conservative Clown Show!" The GOP/RNC "Outsourcer and Chief" thinks that the citizens of Virginia are part of the lazy 47%. He just does relate or understand the struggles of the Middle Class, the Working Poor, the elderely, and the disabled. Could one imagine if the GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" had been President during this horrible storm? It would be an even bigger disaster America!

Thank our lucky stars Willard (by the way, Willard is or was the name of a mental institution in New York State years ago) wasn't at the helm when this disaster struck. He would have said to the residents of the states affected by the storm that the "residents consider themselves [victims] and depend on the government for food, housing and medical needs and MUST take responsibility for their OWN lives." Whewww, thanks for sparing us and having Our President Barack Obama's compassion and undivided attention to put the country ahead of his own political ambitions. He is a REAL PATRIOT!!!!!!

How pathetic! Romney openly campaigning the day after the storm when millions are without power and underwater. He is calling it a relief effort, but it happens to be in OHIO which is a must win state for him? Mitt, the storm is on the Atlantic shoreline, not your make or break state. Hopefully voters are smart enough to see through his sleazy photo op campaign gimmick and reward him for his efforts on election day. This guy just thinks he can get away with anything.

Chris Christie's praise yesterday of President Obama's handling of the relief efforts in New Jersey sent a very clear message: Bi-partisanship is not only still possible, it is essential.

Imagine the Romney camp right now...

Their Keynote Speaker from the Republican National Convention is all over the media thanking the President for......wait for it.......HIS LEADERSHIP.

You just can't make this stuff up.

Still, Chrisite is no fool. His own career trajectory would benefit greatly from a Romney loss, leaving the Boardwalk Bully a clear path to take on Hillary in 2016.

Hillary has already stated that she will not run in 2016. She's had enough. Personally, I'm glad. I like Bill, but not Hillary. She's a political shark and I don't think I want her as president any more than I want Romney. Neither one of them is what the country needs.

I would vote for Hillary. The GOP is already throwing out names for 2016 and Jeb Bush is one of them.S-C-A-R-Y. But for now, just two (main) GOP idiots to contend with. And this will be ending soon. One battle at a time.

This is no big shocker. Political points go to whoever reaches the disaster zone first. If he really wanted to score some points he'd roll up his sleeves and pull some poor child from the rubble.

Personally, I think it says a lot about our country that even a hurricane can't stop the partisan political bickering.

I'm in Virginia, and Richmond certainly did not get as hard hit as was expected, however, our coastal areas did get very hard hit. Romney calling our Governor to consult is not his job and quite frankly a waste of the Governor's time in this time of crisis. A PR trick, that will backfire on him.
