AVON LAKE, OH — Hurricane Sandy's impact spread from the East Coast to Ohio this morning, where Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign announced it was scrapping planned events across the Midwest, while the candidate himself called upon supporters to donate to relief agencies and send prayers to those in the storm's path.
"On the Eastern Coast of our nation, a lot of people are enduring some very difficult times. Our hearts and our prayers go to them as we think about how tough it's going to be there," Romney told an audience of some 2,500 supporters in a high school gym this morning. "I'd like to ask those of you that are here today to think about making a contribution to the Red Cross or another relief agency, to be of help if you can in any way you can imagine to help those who are in harm's way."

Romney, whose campaign has suspended fundraising appeals in the afflicted states, also asked his supporters to donate to relief organizations, either through the campaign's infrastructure, or on their own.
"I know our victory centers are making collections of items and cash that we can send along to the Red Cross," Romney said, echoing an email sent by his campaign this morning. "But whether you come to our victory center or just do it with your email, your internet account, do your very best to help."

"We're counting on Ohio," Romney continued. "I know the people of the Atlantic Coast are counting on Ohio and the rest of our states, but I also think the people of the entire nation are counting on Ohio because my guess is, my guess is if Ohio votes me in as President, I'll be the next president of the United States."
Romney's remarks on the storm came at the end of his stump speech here this morning, and are indicative of the delicate balance the GOP challenger must maintain between keeping up a campaign predicated in no small part on criticizing the record of President Barack Obama, and not looking opportunistic or unconcerned about the impact of a potentially devastating weather event affecting a large portion of the country.
Absent from Romney's remarks this morning was his now traditional attack on Obama for running a "small" campaign, focusing instead primarily on his own day-one agenda and five-point plan, along with a promise to work across the aisle should he be elected.
"I am going to reach across the aisle and work with Democrats. I’m going to find common ground. We have to find a way to work with people in the opposition party," Romney said. "Democrats love America. Republicans love America. We can come together."
As Romney spoke, his campaign announced it was canceling a planned event tonight in Wisconsin, and tomorrow's scheduled events in Ohio and Iowa. The campaign also cancelled events in Florida for Romney's running mate Paul Ryan, and said the campaign schedule remains in flux.

And that it would be "immoral" for the federal goverment to fund disaster releif without cutting funding elsewhere.
PLEASE NOTE THAT: Paul Ryan opposed President Obama's work to build funding for disaster relief into the Budget.
The President was working to get around response DELAYS to the disaster last year -- CAUSED BY Eric Cantor and congressional Tea Partiers.

What's wrong with scraping FEMA? It is inept and full of waste. How many Katrina trailers ended up in the scrap heap? Why not privatize and localize disaster relief with federal support? I think Romney is right - take the Federal government out areas where it doesn't belong. Romney supports STATE control whereas the democrats are in LOVE with the FEDERAL government and it's inherent waste in inefficiencies.
Wouldn't it be nice of Romney, if he gave even 10% of the money that he didn't claim on his taxes to those who will need it after this horrible storm? Or the millions given by the KOCH brothers or Donald Trumps bogus 5 million that he offered to the President (never happen) Also, FEMA!!!!! FEMA is needed. Romney is collecting relief supplies at his campaign headquarters in Noeth Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania- everywhere the storm is expected to impact- and delivering those supplies to emergency evacuation shelters. I linked to The Hill about this this morning.
I've scoured the web, and can find no evidence that Obama is doing anything remotely like this.
Then again, a couple of years ago OfA tried to organize a blood drive, and that was a big flop.
I guess liberals know how to talk a lot- but when it comes to doing?
Not so much.
So according to Romney, the rest of us shouldn't bother voting as we don't live in Ohio???

This storm is no joke. I evacuated yesterday. There are a lot of lower income families down in Atlantic city. If this continues straight west there will be flooding in Philadelphia and NYC will be on the northwest quadrant of the storm. Which is not good. Have we digressed so much as a society that we use disasters to score points for political purpose? The eye of the storm should land about 6:30 EST Let's hope are fellow Americans are safe.

Actually, I think it is Obama who is the copycat as I saw an ad when I woke up this morning at about 8AM asking people to donate to the Red Cross instead of Romney's campain.
The thing is, Romney does this quietly at first, without demanding recognition while Obama does press releases and the like tooting his own horn.
That shows a major difference in the ethics of the two candidates. Liberals expect to be praised for doing the right thing, while conservatives do the right thing because it needs to be done.
Too bad that Obama didn't see fit to do the right thing in Libya and allowed our ambassador to be assassinated.

Yes, he did pay more than was required of him on his 2011 tax return. You don't question why? He himself even said that anyone who pays more in taxes than is required is not fit to be president.
FYI: Romney can and will amend his tax return AFTER the election and will receive a refund on the amount he overpaid. If you don't believe this, go do the research. It is quite legal, but one has to wonder why he did it? I know the answer, do you? I can almost guarantee you that our answers would be quite different.

detroit did go through bankruptcy. it was managed by the government to ensure the uaw was kept whole. many other workers lost their jobs and many investors lost their investments.
we are still having housing issues because of government intervention. the natural process of foreclosure has worked for many years.
we should have disaster recovery as a state function with mutual aid agreements

In 2010 my sister and her husband gave more of their income to charity than the Bidens. I see BO stepped up his charitable giving over the last 2 yrs -- just in time for the elections. Fear is running rampant among the "gimmee" crowd, might have to start EARNING those giveaways!

Both of our past Democratic Presidents have dedicated their lives to helping those less fortunate - Carter through Habitat for Humanity as well as his foundation and Clinton through his foundation. The Bush's have worked - when asked to do so - for tragic events like the Tsunami but otherwise do nothing.
Romney works through the Mormon church but that is required. And, I love that Romney makes sure to publicize his donations. He's nothing but show.

thetotas - not true. If you'll read my post - Carter and Clinton have ongoing permanent programs to help individuals. Both the Bush's step up for emergencies but nothing on a permanent basis. They prefer to enjoy themselves instead of helping others.
Donating to organizations is not the same as giving your time fulltime to help others. It is easy to write a check and that is what you've listed for the Bush's.
