SABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.
The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."
In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.
“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.
“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.
The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.
Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states
Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

Mitt Romney really scares the heck out of me...he has that grin and it reminds of the Joker on Batman. Don't trust him one bit! Here we have a man that has a different agenda each time he talks to folks and it's lie after lie. He can't even be true to the right side.
Yep. I feel about the say way about Obama!
25 million people without jobs - does that scare you?
Libya Attacks in Perspective
The attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya was tragic, but some perspective is needed. There were 12 terrorist attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities abroad during George W. Bush’s tenure, the most of any president (8 with Rumsfield in charge). Clinton had his share, as did Bush Sr. and Reagan (see below):
- 1983 - U.S. Embassy in Beirut - Sixty-three people were killed, including 17 Americans.
- 1983 - U.S. Embassy in Kuwait - Six people were killed and more than 80 others were injured.
- 1984 - CIA Station Chief William Buckley kidnapped and killed
Not to mention the 1983 bombing of Marine barracks in Beirut (241 U.S. Marines were killed and more than 100 others wounded.).
SO we are to feel less outrage about what happened in Benghazi? The inaction???? The misleading statements?
Is that what you are saying?
Obama avoiding questions about Benghazi - we want the truth!
.... YOU WANT TO BLAME OBAMA FOR WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE EAST? Not to discount the American loss of those four men killed ... May God bless them and their families ....
THIS IS WHAT BUSH DID or DIDN'T DO ON AMERICAN SOIL ....
What Bush Knew Before Sept.11
"We were trying to figure out what they (al Qaeda) would do. We never had specifics about time, place, MO (method of operation)."
U.S. intelligence official, commenting anonymously.
President Bush was told in the months before the Sept. 11 attacks that Osama bin Laden's terrorist network might hijack U.S. passenger planes - information which prompted the administration to issue an alert to federal agencies - but not the American public.
CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin says the warning was in a document called the President's Daily Brief, which is considered to be the single most important document that the U.S. intelligence community turns out. The document did not, however, mention the possibility of planes being flown
into buildings.
An agent in the FBI's Arizona office did, however, speculate about that, writing in his case notes about Zacarias Moussaoui that Moussaoui seemed like the type of person who was capable of flying an aircraft into the World Trade Center.
It was the observation of an agent taking notes as he thought about his case - an observation whose significance simply did not register at the time.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says that while President Bush was told last summer that bin Laden's al Qaeda network might hijack planes, he did not receive information suggesting that airplanes might be used as suicide bombs, as they were on Sept. 11.
Fleischer emphasizes that "until the attack took place, I think it's fair to say that no one envisioned that as a possibility."
The revelation about the president's security briefing comes as House and Senate Intelligence Committee investigators prepare for public hearings beginning next month on whether an intelligence community which spends $30 billion a year should have been able to provide a more specific warning in advance of Sept. 11.
The New York Times reports that an FBI agent in Arizona warned his superiors last summer that bin Laden might be sending students to U.S. flight schools.
Investigators have since Sept. 11 suspected bin Laden's al Qaeda network of masterminding the terror attacks on America, which killed more than 3,000 people.
Republicans don't want to see the bigger picture .... the middle east has been at war since forever ... the attacks on the embassy happened in the middle east .... Bush was for-warned too ... and did nothing and they attacked us AMERICAN SOIL .... HUGE DIFFERENCE .....
MIDDLE EAST - 4 KILLED
AMERICAN SOIL - 3000 KILLED .... YES REPUBLICANS EXPLAIN THAT ONE .....
MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA .... AND AMERICA VOTE FOR OBAMA 2012
We want Obama to be accountable for what he did and what he said!
doingmy own poll does a newspapers endorsement sway anyone to vote the way they say?
It sways me to drop my newspaper subscription and subscribe to one with a more rational editorial board.
So for four decades, they endorse a DEM for POTUS and now they endorse a GOP candidate and suddenly, they are irrational. This says more about the way you think than the way the Editorial Board thinks.
Did you read the transcript of the Boards interview with Obama and the video of their interview with Romney? I did. Not hard to see how they were swayed.
That, my fine liberal friends, is what is known as a 'wake up call'.
After my hometown newspaper went through a change of ownership and began endorsing Tea Party candidates and anti-worker and anti-consumer propositions, I switched to an out-of-town newspaper (that delivers daily in my area) with a more moderate editorial policy.
Benghazi Massacre: Fox/Huffington CIA Tale Nonsense
AC 130 Gunships, Typically in Aviano, 1700 miles away if at all, providing radio hadn’t been jammed
Imaginary Planes, Imaginary CIA Armies, All Invented as Election Ploy

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor (with Top US Intel Specialists)

A trained team of up to 120 special forces personnel with radio jammers and heavy weapons killed the US ambassador. There were only two America CIA employees in Libya. The news stories are all fabrications.
The killing of Ambassador Stephens in Benghazi has become a ghoulish election ploy played by Fox News, Huffington Post and others. All are printing and broadcasting conjecture, total falsehood and the usual biased and unreliable garbage they are famous for.
RF Jammer Trucks, Gaddafi Had Dozens in Libya
Neither publication/network has qualified intelligence and/or military advisors. To be former military and work for Fox is considered prostitution.
The ambush at Benghazi required careful coordination. There was no Al Qaeda involvement and there has never been any history of Al Qaeda on the ground in Libya. Moreover, intelligence insiders use the term “Al Qaeda” when looking for money from “congressional critters” too stupid to know that the CIA has always run “Al Qaeda” as a way of avoiding explaining why dozens of small organizations and even friendly intelligence groups will, for obscure reasons, attack American targets.
Fox reported that a large convoy of Libyan milita relieved the compound at 3AM but that there had been no aid until 4 AM:
Generously one can call this kind of reporting inconsitencies. Either they are there or they aren’t, either it is 3am or 4am but not both.
Nothing is simple enough for congress and the American people, this is the belief. When in doubt…lie.
The attack in Benghazi was coordinated with the broadcast of the Terry Jones/CATO Institute/Tea Party telethon worldwide. Rioting broke out in Tripoli but not Benghazi.
Ambassador Stephens had a 6 man detail, former SEALS, all private contractors from L3 Communications, a British company contracted to supply diplomatic security.
The team used was one of the best in the world, equal to any normal task, and by normal, we mean “high risk.” This is standard State Department policy and those used were not only top quality operators but went through months of specialized training at Blackwater’s facilities here in the US.
The second problem was tied to the Ambassador being, not in the Capitol, Tripoli, but in Benghazi to open a museum. I am deeply suspicious of this and as the CATO Institute and State Department are “co-mingled,” it would have been easy for information on the movements of the ambassador and his team to have been telegraphed to the enemy forces who had been positioned in Benghazi.
The forces themselves were spotted at the Tripoli airport several days in advance. Some may have entered from Egypt and some from Tunisia but 50 had come in from the UAE and were identified as Special Forces, UAE Special Forces, who had completed an extensive training program by retired US Special Forces and through the specialized American school for “irregular warfare,” located 45 miles outside Budapest, Hungary.
The attack itself involved pre-positioning two levels of blockade, one tying up any possible relief in Benghazi a kilometer away and another setting up a perimeter about 200 yards around the compound. Streets were blocked and heavy weapons, RPGs, truck mounted anti-aircraft guns and large mortars were used.
Mortar fire was so accurate that the compound had to have been pretargeted in advance. The first round hit the roof of the main building in the compound of 7 homes, all with minimal security.
The primary reason for no additional forces to have been available was the controversy during the civil war. Anti-war activists and “anti-imperialists in the pay of the Gaddafi family along with David Welch of Bechtel Corporation and Israeli mercenaries and advisors, along with troops from across Africa, specialists from Serbia and Belarus and other nations, created something more than a “fog of war” but rather a “fog of truth.”
Paid “shills” working for Gaddafi continually warned of Americans coming into the country armed as an occupation force. Thus, when the war ended, no armed Americans were brought in, only one small team and two CIA agents.
There were 3 additional armed local militia members providing security for the CIA who could have reached Stephens except for the blocked communications, the blocked roads and being outnumbered 30 to one.
The US does maintain 2 C130 gunships in the region. These are slow moving transport aircraft stationed at times in Northern Sardinia but more often further away at Aviano in Italy, North of Venice.
These are Air Force planes, not Navy.
The gunships are extremely effective weapons and would have been of help had they been available, had they been called though all radio and telephone traffic was jammed as with the 1967 attack on the USS Liberty and had the personnel in need of support been stationary and secure with strobe markers to secure them from the 20mm, 40mm and 105mm weapons on the AC130.
Instead, we have been informed, a two pronged and highly coordinated attack drove the US group to a safe house, into vehicles and corralled them in a pre-positioned ambush where their vehicle was attacked by a “quad 50″ anti-aircraft gun mounted on the back of a truck.
Such a weapon could destroy a Bradley Armoured Personnel Carrier or shoot down an Apache attack helicopter.
What is clear is that help was not available, that America moved into Libya with a minimal presence so as to seem unaggressive, to please critics of President Obama’s foreign policy among Republicans in Congress.
Blame them.
I thought Gordon Huff left earth last year on a UFO , go figure.
Et tu, Register? It's stunning that a institution that is pledged to impartiality would be so gullible. Obama's responsible for the partisan gridlock? Obama's policies have failed? Says who? Oh, right, the Republicans. Open your eyes, people, you're being conned. This is a weird and unsettling time in history. You win, Roger Ailes.
I would like the media to report on the cover up in Libya. No administration should have control of the media to where they can have major stories wiped from the pages. And I do not buy into the "You are stupid to keep harping on old news" psych ploy. I refuse to be anyones Lemming. Answers need to be found, the public has a right to know either what did or did not happen. These were peoples real lives, not just a small number of 4.
copies of emails on Daily Caller website.
Here's the latest on the 9/11 Libya thing:
The Libyan embassy asked the President for more security.
The President went to The House of Representatives to get more funding for more security.
The House of Representatives, being controlled by Republicans, denied the funding because they do not want the President (nor the country) to be successful at anything.
The embassy did not get the extra security.
The embassy was attacked and four people, including the ambassador, were killed.
End of story.
What more do you want investigated? Do you want them to investigate why the House of Representatives denied funding for more embassy security in Libya? Is it because of the oath they took in January 2009 to deny all legislation that would help the country?
Obama administration caught in another lie. It's all starting to come out. Wonder how the non union autoworkers in Ohio feel about this.

Another Lie? I can't believe that Obama said the Jeep was moving to China yesterday. What an Arsehole. If Mitt had said something as stupid you would be all over him. <wink>
You are reaching The auto industry is thriving and the folks thier are living it you can not change that. Romney is the biggest sham since Reagan and Reagan the biggest since the Crook in '72. Democrates create jobs, look out for the little guy and leave Surpluses(See Clinton) Republicans spend like drunken soldiers , tell us thier are WMD's when there are not and Break opposition Headquarters to win an election Yea keep voting for them and the GOP next sees the White House in what 2032 !!
Romney's vision for America:
as i am an iowan, i am grossley embarassed of the register - they used to genuinely be a moderate and thoughtful newspaper but have increasingly fox newsish - it dosent have anything to do with obama having his start in iowa and endorsing him because they should - it has to do with them not knowing the facts and making things much worse - it goes back to the saying, be careful of what you wish - you just might get it
The wild thing is is that Obama is more like a conservative of the late '60's early '70's than anyone since NIXON. Or is it just me? Who pulls the strings for the GOP (God OFFAL Politics - and YES I do know what 'offal' means) today? NOT the constituents by a long shot. ARE we THAT WEAK and STUPID, now? Or just lazy?
Okay Kids. This is for all the marbles. Romney does NOT care about you. Or your children. Or your parents. Or your neighbors. Or your friends. Now for the bad news. President Obama probably doesn't EITHER. However, President Obama is - in all likelihood - better for the retention of what meager wealth you are fortunate to have left than Mr. Romney, So, you have to ask yourself, am I prepared enough to survive for the stupidity I know (Obama) or should I relinquish myself to the lottery that is Mr. Romney? Your choice. Use it wisely. IF, ON THE OTHERHAND, you are FEMALE and vote the R/R ticket? YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET BUT YOUR DAUGHTERS UNDER THE AGE OF VOTING DO NOT DESEVRVE THAT WHAT YOU BESTOW THEM. 'Nuff Said.
great great stuff very impactful!!
How much did the "mittzine and it's
SuperPAC" pay the paper for it's propaganda and endorsement? Newspapers following radio as the right wing media.
The Des Moine Register you say? Hellfar! I'm all in, voting for Mitch Homney.
By the way, was is this "newspaper" you speak of? Was that how people got their news before the internet?
One last thing - Des Moines Register will go the way of the dinosaur soon enough. Their endorsement quit counting in the '70's. Good riddance.
We cannot afford four more years of George W. Bush.
Well they did endorse Richard Nixon a few times ;)
"The last republican to win support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972"
LOL, 'nuff said!
There is a reason that the President is up in Iowa, Ohio , Michigan and so many mid western states. They who reside their know a B.Ser when they see one. The Last republican Administration was disaster and all those folks in the 43 Administration asre coming Back !!! So the policies change ? The vision towards wherw we go changes ? The policing the world changes ? Domestic policy changes ? Letting wall street do as they please changes ? Middle class suffering changes ? I think not. Jobs willl be created in the next 4 years so say many economist and last I checked Romney had nothing to do with this forecast. The World economy is in a shambles and if that continues how do they buy our exports has Romney shared his vision on that. The middle class will have to pay for the Bush redo policies just like we did in '07-08. I can get up thier on the nation stage and say I will create 20 million jobs in 4 years too but the math does not add up. If you cut taxes you have to pay for it how is he paying for it. On the backs of you and I. What is different about any politician not much, Romney will not be able to keep his promises anymore than most politicians. The Democrates are not going to work with him unless he compromises but how can he when he refused 10/1 spending cuts to revenue ? How on Gods earth can his supporters with a straight face beleive Romney could do anymore than the President has done in getting us from the Brink of depression to slow (yes) but steady growth. The man could not run for re-election in MA. because his approval rating was 37% if his policies were so good and he held meeting with the opposition every monday and they did such great things why approval rating so low. Why did he not win the race 4 years ago anainst McCain ? This is the Biggest sham since Reagan the WORST President we have ever had. The American people will not buy this and much to my delight Iowans and the great state of Ohio will show how much we will not buy this on 11/6/12. The GOP Blocked every thing the President proposed and made it clear day one we will not work with this guy and we will get him out in one term What they expected was for Mr. Obama to come crawling on his Knees and aquiesing to what they want and he said NO I will not lower my standards for you GOP you need to raise your standards and fight for all Americans and the GOP does NOT what is said behind closed doors is the mans heart. Romney does not and never will care for 100% of Americans the Presiddent has said a proved he does. If I had more I love my country I would pay more will it solve all problems and cloe the deficit no !! But is sure a kell would help Moral to know from top to bottom and bottom to top we stand united and standing United will bring a successful recovery and move to the future. OBAMA 4 MORE YEARS to much work has been put in to get away from the bush policies so why on Earth would we go back to that through Romney. Send him back to his net worth of 200M he will be fine and send Boy Wonder back to actually work across the aisle !!!
The Register is owned by Gannett. A quick search online shows that all of the Gannett papers who have announced an endorsement to date have endorsed Romney, even those papers that have traditionally leaned liberal. The Register's endorsement was incredibly illogical (it's available to read online) and it's very unlike their editorial board to use such poor reasoning as they displayed in the article itself - such as claiming that Obama is at fault for giving up on working with the Republicans! My god, Obama bent over backwards to work with the GOP even though they tipped their hand early on and proclaimed that their only goal was to get rid of Obama.
No, this endorsement must have been ordered by the corporate executives at Gannett. The Register has rarely printed anything so poorly reasoned and written as this tripe.
Beth - You said 'because the owner is a Mormon'....I have yet to check that out but let's all remember that the Salt Lake City Tribune newspaper did the complete opposite and endorse President Obama. In their determination they started by giving credit to Romney for some things he did many years ago but then went on to write a rather scathing opinion of Romney, stating that the president deserved a 2nd term whereas Romney didn't even deserve a first.
The Des Moines Register, long owned by Cowles Communications, was sold to Gannett Co. Inc. in 1985. Neither family has a Mormon connection.
Salt Lake City's other newspaper, the LDS Church-owned Deseret News, does not endorse candidates.
The nation's newspapers of record, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post all have endorsed President Obama.
LOL, "newspapers of choice", as long as you are a hateful leftist who is not willing to stand for any opinion that isnt congruent with their own.
For a listing of the nation's top 100 papers by circulation and their endorsements of candidates for President, go here:

Why is NBC covering up the report that urgent requests for backup during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command? Isn't our media supposed to be "watchdogs"?
Hillary - The truth shall set you free.
BREAKING NEWS!!!!...
