Des Moines Register endorses Romney

SABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.

The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."

In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.

“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.

“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.

The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.

Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states

Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

I hear a lot of "The country needs to turn around" and then they say Romney is the one to do it. I don't want the country to turn around. We're better off than we were when Obama took office. I think what people are saying when they say things like "we need to turn around" is "this isn't happening fast enough for me" - Which I get - We're a fast-food nation - instant gratification.. heck that's what got us all in the mess in the first place. But now is the time to remain moving in the new direction we're moving in- it's slow and steady and we'll all be better off in the long run. The key is "long" run... not the McConomy that you're addicted to. Stay the course.

The problem is that the U.S. has no "course" under Obama. We have been floundering. There are 6 trillion in private funds waiting to be invested into economic expansion and regeneration. For four years this money has been waiting for the Fed to move so it can know how to gear up. No direction from the President, not even a budget. And yes, that is one of the reasons to have a president, leadership and direction, then congress responds and comes together. This president is continually making it about congress and bush. After 4 years, there should be some return. But nothing. Thank you.

Confussed... bugmetoo.... great comments with only your inner feelings. Just more stupid mean spirited ugly nonsense without reason or thought. Simpletons. Ok, don't be ashamed about voting for Obama, be ashamed for his letting four American living breathing people die without even trying to help. Then letting a cover up go on while he headed to a campaign party in Vegas. No need to talk about any other day of his meaningless administration. Unlike you, if I voted for him, I would keep it to myself out of shame and stupidity. Just that one night. Nothing else. Four dead people. Pot of gold on my doorstep signed "with love from Obama" Could not get me to check a box for that person. Four people, over six hours, nothing, video, Vegas.

So desperate... the Obama campaign at this point has become nothing more than laughable!!! Its nice to see after all the lying, personal attacks, and empty rhetoric by TEAM Barry, Mitt and Paul have a very good chance of winning. Not by a little but by a lot.....Barry keeps running his "negative" attack ads while Mitt is clearly focused on the future. Thanks everyone, its been tough, but WE are almost there.......

Ofoolya is a one and done president. Ofoolya is a failed experiment. All Ofoolya has done is to promote the stereotype of the welfare grubbing black race... and has created further prejudice against blacks. Yes, he is the black messiah!

What fun it will be when Romney is elected. The Gallup poll has Romney winning by 5 to 6 points, and they have only picked a presidential election wrong once in over 100 years of polling. The facts don't lie!

I met two black ladies today who are voting for Romney.... and everyone I know who voted for Ofoolya 4 years ago is voting Romney this time... Polls show that 17% of those voted for Obama 4 years ago are not voting for him this time. This is MILLIONS OF VOTES Ofoolya has lost.... me predicts a ROMNEY LANDSLIDE.

If Romney were to win on Nov. 6 (highly unlikely). The leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate should do as his colleague did in 2009 and publicly declare that their number one priority is to make him a one term president.

I was traveling across the state of Maryland and Delaware today. Both heavily Democratic. I know the Romney campaign has no hope of winning Maryland. But, the signs I saw in favor of Romney over Obama were 10 to 1. And, the bumper stickers for Romney were on cars with Maryland and Delaware tags. I was shocked. I would say, the LIB TARDS better be sweatin bullets.....HA HA HA......YEEEEEHAWWWW. 10 more days!!!

This is true in many places that are supposedly libtard dominated. In Florida for 80 miles around me in every direction there are no more than half a dozen Ofoolya signs, and HUNDREDS of Romney signs everywhere.... I think that it is going to be a Romney landslide. Also there is a poll done recently that shows that 17% of those who voted for Ofoolya 4 years ago are voting against him this time... this is MILLIONS of votes Ofoolya has lost from 4 years ago... If I were a libtard I would be worried.... and with Sandy getting reading to knock out power in 5 libtard states for a couple of weeks.... it is not looking good for Ofoolya on any front.

Not so. Look at Reagan. This economy has been stuck in neutral since 2009. Why...UNCERTAINTY. Main Street's small business isn't investing. Take a couple of hours this week and go talk to a small business owner. They are paying down debt and investing on replacement equipment and only sure things. Obama has had 4 years to reduce this. He hasn't passed a budget, increased new regulations by 40% compared to Bush. Employees will cost more due to health care (even us that already had health care benefits.

This is the worst recovery since the end of WWII

Vote for change. Romney 2012!

Ok, I get it, The Editor at the Register drank the Romney Koolaid (The flavor was called, "Sour Grapes" or Grapes of Wrath and Wealth").

By the way was the Editor also wearing the requisite tennis shoes when writing the editorial??

Since the Register has NOT published details of whatever the "plan(s)" is/are and just what kind of generally accepted macro-economics theory it's based on that has been proven to work, that Koolaid must have been pretty damn strong and tasty.

Apparently, Romney tax cuts and military spending AND a lot of 'Miracle, magic budget dust" will create an economy that will be good for dying print newspapers by bringing wealth to its readers and therefore more subscriptions - well, good luck to one and all at the Register.

God save the Regsiter and God save the United States of America- from itself.

From the Register's endorsement: "Romney succeeded as governor in Massachusetts where he faced Democratic majorities in the legislature."

Has the Register not heard about Romney's 800 or so vetoes while he was governor? I'd say that if anybody succeeded during Romney's term it was the Democratic legislature that stepped up again and again to save Massachusetts by overriding nearly all those vetoes.

Half the women are thoughtful, strong, educated, and independent, but many are alone and frustrated.

The other half are dyed-in-the-wool, submissive, don't care about their rights, do what their husbands tell them to do, just want to watch soap operas, and squirt out mouth-breathing kids types. They are alone and frustrated too.

Which Would a Mitt Led Bain Capital Do During a Leveraged Buyout?

                A) Bain Capital loses money, but company survives.

                B) Bain Capital makes money and the company survives.

                C) Bain Capitol can make just a bit more money than #2, but the company goes out of business.

The answer is #3, of course. Company survivability is not a "variable" in the Bain spreadsheet. Mitt's a businessman, but not in the Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, or Bill Gates mold. He's a leveraged buyout guy like Gorden Gecko in Wall Street, except Geko's company was not funded initially by wealthy Latin Americans through offshore companies registered in Panama.
