Des Moines Register endorses Romney

SABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.

The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."

In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.

“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.

“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.

The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.

Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states

Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

I can't believe MSNBSecret even reported this!! They love to keep the President on his high horse. Maybe they are finally seeing the light...probably not! They still have Chris Matthews bullying and spewing racist charges. Just because someone doesn't want to vote for Obama does not mean they are racist Chris!! Hopefully someone at Comcast realizes what is going on with their corrupt "NEWS" channel.

It's a great day when the voice of the citizens can defeat the power of the media.

I don't like what little Mitt Romney has to say about how he will "correct" the nation's fiscal course, I don't like that he is on both sides of almost every issue, I don't like that he won't show his tax returns or his Cayman accounts, I don't like his view on privacy/women's rights, and I cannot imagine him doing anything to diminish the partisan politics of Washington DC. I understand that Santorum was favored over Romney in the caucus, and that there is an ultra-conservative sentiment in the State; but I am confident that most Hawkeye's will clearly see the "correctness" in retaining our current Presidency.

It may be too late in Iowa for the DMR endorsement to take effect. The early voting started over a week ago and lots of people in Iowa are taking advantage of it.

  • This is HUGE; Midwesterners know that anybody who chooses to speak with the "Pimp with a Limp" rather than Netanyahu is not WORTHY of the office of President of the United States. Iowa, Wisconsin, etc. will vote for Romney, it is becoming crystal clear. Benghazi was the FINAL nail in Obama's political coffin; the first debate showed the cracks in Obama's armor, he is just not up to the job folks. Keep on going on MTV Mr. President; and Letterman, and The View......your days are few Sir, Air Force One is going to have a new passenger full-time........AND I LOVE IT

His debut on Pimp with a Limp was on the Anniversary of 9/11, the day Benghazi was under attack.

To blame Obama for the "partisan gridlock" - really Republican societal homicide - is the most asinine thing I can imagine. So the Register is rewarding the Republicans for their treason. Has this paper undergone an ownership change in the last four years? Something does not add up here.

Nunzus,

As with a marriage it takes both sides to come to compromise. A real leader is able to work with opponents in a bipartisan manner.

The Des Moines Register endorses Romney?

What else can one expect from a newspaper that has endorsed more loser (14) in presidential contests over the past 100 years than winners (9)?

What else can one expect from a newspaper that never once endorced FDR but did endorse Herbert Hoover, not once, but twice.

Anybody who believes Romney and crew will solve this country's problems either doesn't know what he's talking about or simply can't deal with reality.

I wonder how much some right-wing super PAC paid the Des Moines Regisgter to endorse Romney?

Money would seem to play a bigger role in American politics than truth and justice.

I agree with the others on this site who mention that The Register has gone from liberal-leaning to conservative-leaning in a very few short years. I, too, have noticed that most editorials are now right-leaning and religiously so. Typical large corporation position with lack of a balanced presentation of the newspaper it owns. Time to give up another of the small enjoyments of life: reading the newspaper while enjoying a cup of coffee. Make a note for tomorrow - cancel my subscription to The Register.

That's right... the nation wants a REAL LEADER... which is why OBAMA will be sitting pretty til 2016 and the REAL LIAR will be putting more people out of work and shipping their jobs off to China so he can buy himself another dancing horse. Perfect gift for a HORSES ASS.

OBAMA / BIDEN 4 more for 44 !! ( yep...we're the ones that aren't LYING SOCIOPATHS ).

Snow White, Superman and Pinocchio are walking down the street together. A sign reads "Beauty Contest". Snow White enters and comes out with a tiara. They keep walking and another sign reads "Weight lifting Contest". Superman enters and comes out with the prize Belt. They keep walking and another sign reads "Worlds Biggest Liar Contest". Pinocchio enters and later comes out with nothing saying "Who is this Mitt Romney dude?"

What the Des Moines newspaper hierarchy is really suggesting is voters should give into the obstruction and hostage taking by republicans in Congress in order to break the gridlock in Washington. Since when do we give in to terrorist, or hostage takers demands ?

Give in, hell, I say we treat the republican obstructionist as domestic terrorist for all the harm and suffering they have brought upon America by obstructing Obama's efforts to grow the economy and put people back to work. If it were not for republicans throwing out anchors at every turn to prevent progress, there would be millions more Americans working, millions fewer losing their homes and 12 million less needing food stamps..

We are a nation which does not negotiate with terrorist, foreign or domestic. No rewards for ill deeds leveled at American citizens, ever.

Just file a public records request for advertisements paid for on behalf of Romney and those paid on behalf of Obama, I believe that will explain why the Registry endorsed Romney over Obama.

Tea Traitor influence in Iowa has been felt strongly over the last year. I wouldn't be surprised if next they wanted to secede, as in a couple other states with a large Tea Traitor contingent. The better option would be for them to emigrate out of the US, as many have been threatening in response to political undercurrents.

You can say the same thing about Florida where the largest paper, The Orlando Sentinel, endorsed Romney last week after endorsing Obama in 2008. The same can be said about Wisconsin which elected a Republican governor and a Tea Party senator in 2010 and now a dead heat after voting for Obama by 14% in 2008. NC, VA, IN, OH, they are drinking tea. LOL

Iowa is my 'home state' where I was born and raised... But the candidates representing the state today are not my 'home state'... Grassley is getting more irrelevant and King is totally over the ledge...

Of course, I now live in MO and have Akin on the ballot... When does this madness end!

Proud to be an Iowan, and proud to be an American.

Ashamed of this administration and its failure to protect American citizens in Benghazi, followed by weeks of lying to the public about how it all went down.

Anyone who can support the current administration after its failure to respond to the Benghazi attack has no conscience at all.

I salute the brave men who gave their lives trying to protect their fellow Americans in Benghazi. This president and his administration have dishonored them by lying about the entire situation. What a failure as Commander in Chief. There is NO WAY any decent American could vote for Obama after this tragedy.

All the papers are sending the same message.

"We supported you in 2008 and expected change for the better. Instead, what we got the last four years was division and an economy in the ditch where you found it. We need new leadership."

Hope someone is helping Ohio understand what is going to happen when the GM free pocket lining money from heaven and the over production run their course in the next year or two. Also hope they find out what is in store for oil and coal under an unconstrained Obama administration. Someone should tell Ohio that when they need more redistibution money to handle the coming down turn, they wll be at the end of the list as money will first be sent to large urban cities and states with heavy population. Ohio is in a tough spot. The battle ground state and things going so so ok temporarily with the trickle down of fed dollars. Tough call. Payback for what you got, or look to a year or two from now.
