Subscribe to RSSSABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.
The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."
In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.
“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.
“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.
The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.
Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states
Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

When I hear what the obama media organisations like NBC, CBS, MS-NBC, MSN, say about how great a president 0Bama is, I get a feeling that I'm back in the clouds of war, where you are not sure of where you are or where you are going to be in the next moment. When Chris(thrill down my leg) Matthews can't say fast enough how much he loves 0Bama without slobbering all over his guests you know the man is mentally ill. obama has at his chest TWO cover ups and the media won't even touch the subject, YET the voters are going to level the playing field by putting the media and obama supporters out of contention and not voting for the current administration.
Iowa is about 95% white, and if it goes nuts because their farms don't get enough subsidies and good market prices, it becomes a northern extension of the southern confederacy.
Its just so hard for a thinking person to come to any decision in favor of such an obvious failure. Only someone stuck deep in their ideology without any concern for the country would continue this idiocy.

The Detroit Free Press has also endorsed Mitt Romney. Wonder when that paper last endorsed a Republican. Detroit has never had a Republican mayor. And now that city is just about gone. Detroit had finally realized the devastation caused by a government controlled by Democrats.

No one died in Watergate. Four innocent Americans died in Benghazi. Obama should resign over the cover-up of what happened in Libya. Nixon covered up a break-in and was impeached. Obama covers up the story behind the assassination of four Americans and should resign.

I cant believe anybody would want to give obama another term. I wouldnt let him run my daughters lemonade stand. I could see my daughter working hard on picking the best lemons, spending hours on making her lemonade stand attractive and than going around and telling people about it. So she would be running a good businesss. A boy down the street with his stand didnt spend as much time and effort but he expected the same amount of money. Well Obama would just say she needs to pay her fair share and give up much of her profit to the boy down the road. It doesnt mater how hard you try it is only the outcome that is important. As an Iowa voter (who's already voted for Romney), I have to give kudos to the paper for at least being honest with themselves and others about what needs to be done to turn this country in the right direction. Unfortunately for this country, there are far too many voters that want 4 more failed years. IF Obama was going to get things fixed, A LOT MORE THINGS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ALREADY! Obama has no 2nd term plan except more of the same failed policies.
Four years ago, Obama had no experience, but ran on the need for 'hope and change'. He didn't being enough of either. Who says Romney could do any worse? Amazing!!!! A paper that didn't even endorse Ronald Reagan realizes that Obama has given us 4 years of disaster, failure, and is leading us to worse. If a paper that hasn't endorsed a Republican in 40 years can see the clear and present danger Obama is to the well being of our nation shouldn't everybody be able to see it? This was put on the ballot by the state voters and Championed by the Senate Dem. Sherrod Brown who Republicans have spent more then 33 million the highest ever in the state history to try to muddy his record because of the SB5 overturned by a margin of 61%-38%. Kasuck said SB5/Issue 2 would be upheld by Voters about the same margin and he was DEAD WRONG. You know who else supported SB5 after some waffle comments at first OH YEAH IT was MITT ROMNEY he said he Fully Supported SB5 Issue 2 and also recently what happened in Wisconsin should be the Model for the nation. He is not out for Workers at all. We don't get Romnesia here we know he was speaking the truth in his 47 percent comments so we will speak the truth at the ballot box with 4 more years....

No the editor is friends with Scott Walker and the Governor there , Mr. John take away the union rights of workers as well as the stupid paper there, it is called their payday. Stephanie Cutter say they are not dealing in reality, leftist blogs all the the web say they are owned by Bain and claims are screamed that the publisher overroad the board. For the first time in 40 years, the Register saw things differently and all the looney left can do is name call! Sound familier? I could care less about his race. You however may have a problem since you brought it up. It's his amateur approach to the job I have a problem. My job is to make sure the 100 people working at our company have a job tomorrow. It boils down to risk and reward and the uncertainty we have had for the last four years has been insane. Thank god the government can't force companies to hire. With your thoughts, I can only come to the conclusion you work for the government or are feeding at the "I am entitled trough".

The last time they endorsed a Republican for president was Richard Nixon...we all know how that turned out. It seems the Register has conviently forgotten a few things, like that "chance" they want us to give Romney includes the exact same 8 years of George Bush policies, that got us in this mess, they say the president should have gotten us out of.They also seem to have conviently forgotten over a thousand wind energy jobs the president's 'failed' economic policies brought to the state...you're welcome. Hopefully the residents of Iowa have a better memory than the Register seems to have.

69, you need to get a grip on things. Wall Street is a different planet than Main Street. Go talk to a few small business owners this week and see what they say. Most are sitting on the sidelines.

I don't know why the right wingnuts are going crazy about this paper's endorsement.
Firstly, the paper is owned by Gannett who has a lucrative contract with the Weather Channel's WSI, which is part owned by Bain. So, clearly we know where loyalty lies.
Secondly, the candidates who were endorsed by the paper in the past lost 14 out of 23 times. I expect after Nov. 6, it will be 15 out of 24 times, still a decent record, I must add.
I know this is completely off topic but what happen to the news feed on this site I had to goggle first read in order to even find any this story - seems like anything that is current no longer shows up when I go to politic news. I have worn myself out trying to figure out why the rightwingnuts hate Obama and clearly he has accomplished so much for all of us, I just have never felt that much hate and don't know what it is like. I really have to hand it to Obama for putting up with the bafoons the past 4 years, it will quiet down after he is re-elected but it only takes one of these haters even on this page to go that extra mile to just ............ I really feel sorry for his girls knowing the horrible lies they say about their Dad.
class of 69 -- I agree with you. But I, like many others and probably you too, know the answer. I can't see how any one can deny that, when the GOP leadership openly (!) conspired from day 0 to block Obama's agenda just to want to see him become a 1-term president. It has never happened before to any other president and probably won't for a long time to come. The difference with Obama? We all know. Many of his haters simply have no sense of proportion and human decency.
Does Obama deserve another term? Absolutely, and I hope he will get it, in spite of everything. The Des Moines Register clearly sold out, but that's pretty much just some of the 1% (thank heavens not all the 1%) doing their thing.
I lived in Iowa for most of my life until just over a year ago. Yes, my husbands job went to Mexico (under a democratic gov.) and our life has never been the same since. Anyway, I'm stunned that the Register is supporting Romney. It's the first time in my memory (I'm in my 30s) that the Register has done this.
As for you liberals. I'm glad the Republicans are stopping Obama on things. If you want to live in a socialist country leave this one and find one that is socialist. Let the rest of us be. Obama would make a great advisor on taking away rights, giving $ away and having no spine against the UN.

So what, a worthless paper in Des Moines endorses the loser of the election. There's another worthless paper in Davenport who is doing the same. Who cares what a newspaper thinks. They should present the news, not try to make it. newspapers should not endorse any candidate. BTW, the A.P has announce that Obama has enough electoral votes to win the election.
