Des Moines Register endorses Romney

SABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.

The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."

In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.

“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.

“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.

The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.

Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states

Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

Remember Romney confirmed in one of his speeches that corporations are people too? The Des Moines Register has just been bought by the GOP Super Pac and is now just exercising it's voting right (its vote is much, much bigger than your or my vote though). I wonder who is the real new owner. Any one related to Karl Rove?

So what's your defense of what happened in Libya and the aftermath? You can rant about Super Pacs all you want (Obama has a few too you know).

Let's hear your defense to the facts about Benghazi

Did you notice that the paper's endorsement statement didn't even mention the Libya incident or any foreign policy issues? Because Romney s-u-c-k-s at foreign policies.

Name a president in recent history who had not suffered any loss of US lives on diplomatic or military missions in foreign land, and I'll give you a defense of the Libya incident.

Obama never said that corporations are people.

Obamas treatment of the Benghazi incident is easy to defend! He wants to be re-elected and that would not happen if he and Holders Libyan version of Fast and Durious were to come to light beforehand!

There is so little to vote for this President and so much to say it is time for him to go.

Ideologues never look at facts, never see the 'big picture', and always find small reasons to attempt to confirm their never to change choice.

I think the Register decided to take a fresh look with the commitment to tell it like it is....and did.

Is it just a mere coincidence that President Obama didn't publish and release his "plan" until AFTER the debates and AFTER Romney called him out on it? Did he release it so late so he wouldn't have to try to defend it during the debates?

President Obama's biggest problem is that he now HAS a record to run on -- it just doesn't happen to be a good one!

Please rent the movie "2016". It may open some eyes to the real agenda!

Sounds like the "Register" took a bold and correct position.

Meanwhile, back at the Denver Post, they've endorsed Odumbo! Who'd of thunk it?

Of course, the Post is going down the tubes with the rest of the left-stream media. Americans, even those left-of-center, are bored and weary of the continual/ predictable stances these publications take. Most of their liberal columnists have been let go, hell why bother to have multiple authors who all write the same drivel? The Wall St. Journal is actually the best source of unbiased news.

I doubt Democrates will work with Romney. They'll give him what the republicans gave Obama. Filabuster after filabuster. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. (If they don't we'll run candidates who will - just like the repubs)

That's because we have had a lack of leadership in the White House. You don't just make a speech and expect the opposition to just fall in line and then blame them for not getting things done. Romney has a history of working with Democrats. Clinton did a good job as well. Obama, well, he's cool.

I think that is what they should do if Romney gets in, Mod. If the American people want to reward obstructionism, they deserve it. I doubt that the democrats will be as dirty though; they will give the electorate the co-operation that they do not deserve.

No, the Democrats won't filibuster. they would never be responsible enough to even TRY to represent their constituents that well. Proof of that is that ALL the GOP policies that they disagreed with AFTER the fact, but did nothing to stop them from being instituted to begin with. When the GOP controlled Congress and Bush was President, everything that was passed was ALL the GOP's fault, according to Dems. Then when Dems got control of Congress under Bush, apparently they, too, were powerless to stop the GOP. And then when the Dems got Congress AND President Obama, the Dems were stymied by the GOP at every turn. The Dems are simply too weak or too uncaring to actually govern responsibly. For the life of me, I can not see why Democrats continue to vote for ineffective leaders. The Dems seemingly can not block a single thing they deem bad while in the minority, and can't pass what they consider good while in the majority!

"...Romney has a history of working with Democrats..." -- That's a laugh. When he was governor of MA, which is the only political experience he ever had, apart from his previous experience at running for the Senate and presidency, he issued a record number of vetos (in the hundreds) which were then all overruled. So that's his history of working with Democrats, another of his lies.

The Progressives would need to have 48 or 49 seats in the Senate for that to happen, I doubt that they will have that many! They would also need 67 seats to override a Presidential veto, that's definately not going to happen!

          #170.6 - Sun Oct 28, 2012 12:07 PM EDT

Any chance of the President working with the Congress is an improvement. Obama admitted he cannot work this Congress. How is another four years be any different since the control of the House and the Senate is expected unchanged?

            #170.7 - Sun Oct 28, 2012 12:10 PM EDT

"...Any chance of the President working with the Congress is an improvement..." -- Don't you guys even have any sense of proportion and human decency? The entire GOP leadership openly conspired to block Obama's agenda from day 0, even at the expense of the nation's welfare, and you lay ALL the blame on Obama?

In spite of all that, Obama still managed to do a good job.

Repubs are trying to steal the election. A major pro-Romney group last July bought the 3rd largest voting machine company....that is count votes for 17.7 million people and the machines are in several Ohio counties.

The Repubs do not even attempt to hide the stealing of the election.

Dems, get out and vote, get your neighbors, familiy, friends, out to vote and be very careful about the voting machines and paper ballots....make sure they are handled correctly. Do not let Repubs steal this election.

If you do not trust the voting machine, ask for a paper ballot.

It seems that the only "problems(?)" with voting machines have occured in North Carolina! There the machines were turning votes for Romney into votes for Obama! While they were stated as just glitches, it's very interesting that none of these "glitches(?)" ever turned an Obama vote into a Romney vote!

Obama has earned, and deserves, a second term. The economy is looking better due to the president's hard work and perseverance. Unemployment is going down, the housing industry shows improvement, consumer confidence is up, our troops are coming home. So many positives signs of recovery. I do not want to go back to the shallow, selfish and destructive policies of the Republican Party. The Salt Lake City Tribune has endorsed Obama. As has the Boston Globe (Mass. residents will NOT be voting for their former governor) and the New York Times. It's as if those who know Romney best want the least to do with him. He figured since threats to Justice Roberts made him cower on ObamaCare, it should definitely work with a newspaper that endorsed him four years earlier. NOT

Liberals are frantic. The first few pages are a testament to their fear that the Obama train may be coming to a screeching halt.

Looks like Cutler was denied extra security against the Panthers. 6 sacks in the first half. 3 turnovers.

The last time the Des Moines endorsed a Republican was in 1972. That was Richard Nixon. We know what happened there. :-p
