Subscribe to RSSSABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.
The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."
In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.
“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.
“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.
The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.
Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states
Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

The election will be very close and Romney does have a chance. If not for the extreme social agenda the republicans are putting forth they would have this election in the bag. I don't understand why you righties are not angry with the way your party constantly shoots themselves in the foot. Is forcing women to bear their rapist's child so important to you that you are willing to lose the election over it? You are probably correct, but the right is pushing an extreme social agenda. Apologists for Romney say he wouldn't do these things. He agrees with abortion in the case of rape, he does not want to prevent people from accessing contraception. BUT - he will not prevent other radical reactionaries from doing so and that is just as bad if not worse.
Social agendas should be part of the election because social agendas and economic agendas are inextricably linked, which is why running a country is so much more complex than running a business.

You can smoke whatever you want, unlike liberals who ostracize cigarette smokers under the guise of public health. I don't like what Obama has done to the economy. I don't like what he has done to the debt. He fired his top economic advisor because the guy wanted capital gains tax cuts. He ignored his own deficit commission's recommendations. He ignored James Hansen's recommendation for more investment in nuclear energy. He says he is for the middle class, but he is doing everything he can to discourage business expansion and keeping job growth at an anemic pace. Obama is the worst leader we have had in a long time, way in over his head. Time for grown-ups to lead.

Silly me Having often thought good things about the team at the Register I would have assumed that they would appreciate that the Washington gridlock is due to the actions of Mr. Grassley and team and not the adminstration. But looks like they took can be bought and paid for by hard right funds and the glitter of the call to the table not inhabited by the 47%....I hope that they understand we can hold them in the same disdain they have for us. As a new member of Team Romney their editorial content is forever in question.
As a former Iowan born and raised I'm surprised by the DMR decision to endorse Romney. Hey you may or may not like Obama's policies but at least you knew where he stood. If McCain (without Palin) had ran in 2012 it would have been a toss-up for my vote. I could have understood an endorsement of a Republican ticket. I really don't want to admit it but I do believe that the DMR endorsment has to do with the cultural views of Obama (gay rights) and the underlining tones of race. I've always thought of Iowa being populated with progressive thinkers! Still do but as much!
That is exactly why the Register and the Orlando Sentinel endorsed Romney. They did NOT know where Obama stood in 2008. They were told one thing and got something else. Obama no longer has a majority of the independents for the same reason.
The register can back whoever they want and Obama will still win Iowa. Its a lock for Obama.

I voted in NC this week and was appalled at the nonchalant attitude of identifying voters. I offered up my driver license and voter registration and was told they don't need either. All they wanted was name, address and date of birth. That information is availble to anyone on the internet.

I believe some is because of the debates. However, I also believe, that despite the medias steadfast refusal to cover the DISGRACEFUL events in Benghazi (before, during and after the attacks), the American people are paying attention to these three issues:
1) Why was security at the consulate/embassy DECREASED in spite of EVERY indication that terrorism in the area was on the upswing?
2) Why was NO MILITARY HELP given to embattled Americans over the course of a seven hour attack which was being watched in real time?
3) Why the DELIBERATE attempt to convince the American people that this attack was because of a stupid video when there was information right from the first night that it was not?
Obama has given himself away as a manipulative incompetent who has no idea how to lead and no idea how to take responsibility. He is a disgrace.
Benghazigate is Obama's Iranian hostage crisis. Just a slight push for the voters to make up their minds along with the state of the economy and the national debt which is scheduled to reach 20 trillion in another four years if nothing is done.

1) Security: Obama wanted to pretend Libya was a success. He wanted to push "normalized relations" as quickly as he could. Having to have increased security didn't fit in with his naraative.
2) No Help: Obama, who was already distressed that he is the first president since Carter to have an ambassador killed on his watch, did not want to risk a failed rescue mission, further cementing the Carter similarities in the publics mind.
3) The Big Lie: Obama wouldmn't admit he screwed up (big surprise) and he knew the media would attempt to cover him. Plus, he could always drag the investigation on until AFTER the election

The document did not, however, mention the possibility of planes being flown

An agent in the FBI's Arizona office did, however, speculate about that, writing in his case notes about Zacarias Moussaoui that Moussaoui seemed like the type of person who was capable of flying an aircraft into the World Trade Center.
It was the observation of an agent taking notes as he thought about his case - an observation whose significance simply did not register at the time.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says that while President Bush was told last summer that bin Laden's al Qaeda network might hijack planes, he did not receive information suggesting that airplanes might be used as suicide bombs, as they were on Sept. 11.
Fleischer emphasizes that "until the attack took place, I think it's fair to say that no one envisioned that as a possibility."
The revelation about the president's security briefing comes as House and Senate Intelligence Committee investigators prepare for public hearings beginning next month on whether an intelligence community which spends $30 billion a year should have been able to provide a more specific warning in advance of Sept. 11.
The New York Times reports that an FBI agent in Arizona warned his superiors last summer that bin Laden might be sending students to U.S. flight schools.
