Des Moines Register endorses Romney

SABINA, OH -- For the first time in four decades, Iowa’s influential newspaper endorsed a Republican candidate for president as The Des Moines Register announced Saturday night its support of Gov. Mitt Romney in the November election.

The Register, in an editorial that will run in Sunday’s paper, asks voters to give Romney "a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."

In 2008, the Register endorsed Barack Obama. The last Republican to win the support of the paper was Richard Nixon in 1972.

“Barack Obama rocketed to the presidency from relative obscurity with a theme of hope and change. A different reality has marked his presidency. His record on the economy the past four years does not suggest he would lead in the direction the nation must go in the next four years,” the editorial posted on the Register’s website said.

“Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed,” the editorial piece ended.

The announcement from Iowa’s largest newspaper comes just days after President Obama had an off-the-record then turned on-the-record conversation with the publisher and editor of the Register that prompted an op-ed from the paper about the condition of the interview.

Romney has some ground to make up in the state, which awards six electoral votes, as last week’s NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of Iowa showed Romney trailing Obama in the state -– 51 percent to 43 percent. Romney narrowly lost the Iowa Caucus back in January to former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

When voters receive their Sunday paper in the morning, they will not only find the editorial endorsing Romney but also a copy of the “Mittzine”-– a pro-Romney superPAC publication about the GOP nominee and being dropped in five battleground states

Romney travels to Davenport, Iowa, on Monday for a rally. His running mate, Paul Ryan, is also expected to head back to the Hawkeye State within the next nine days leading up to the election.

Every one makes mistakes, individuals, groups, organizations, corporations , news papers, presidents, whole administrations, The good that can be had from making a mistake is learning FROM it. There in lies the wisdom of knowing when you need a change. There is a large number of voters, supporters, organizations that made the mistake of voting for obama, WHY? well obama lied to them, to put it simple & plain. Now with the fiasco in Benghazi, and the death of four Americans, obama's deficiencies loom large. It's been coverup after coverup with obama an his corrupt administration. Obama will tell a bold face lie and anyone of his ass kissers will swear to it. If obama were to get re-elected he would be impeached, when the truth is finally exposed. Hopefully the numbers of voters are deciding now that he doesn't deserve a second chance. It's a crime the way the media is protecting obama, it;'s costing them a lot. It's time to change leadership.

Evidently, they haven't surveyed the area around Romney , and seen the same characters from the Bush Administration surrounding him with the same policies. How in the world have you over looked this ??? !!!!!! The gridlock is because of Republicans who have made millions , and unemployed people so they could get one man out of office. Talk about rose colored glasses . . .

great president !!!!, What they have seen is the failure of Obama and that is what needs to change. A good leader can lead in the direction he wants to go, Obama cannot do that. Gridlock is a failure of leadership and I believe Obama, Reid, and Boehner have all failed and need to be replaced. Blaming Bush will get you nowhere. It is Romney leading, not Bush and he will lead they way he sees it, not Bush's way so your argument is ALL wrong.

Has the Register asked to see Romney's Tax Returns?

Oh, how our future leader for the next four years paid his taxes in the last 11 years doesn't matter. What matters is that the top 5% will contiune and get more breaks for the next four years..

    Thank you much Register..

It truly doesn't matter who wins the presidential election, because the House will remain republican, and the Senate democratic. People can scream and squawk about bipartisanship, but that's not what they want. They want their party to "win" at all costs. We are truly a divided nation and there is no Franklin Roosevelt on the horizon to bring us together. I see a continued decline for this nation and there is unfortunately nothing we will do about it.

DR.........read my post below. Democrats have been "belly aching" about Republicans being the party of NO, and trying to "paint the picture" that if they would simply "roll over" and support Obama the country would be better off.............simply NOT TRUE.

Someone has to STOP the "deficit spending", YOU as someone who has your own personal responsibilities, mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries, ect. knows full well YOU CANNOT SPEND YOUR WAY OUT OF DEBT....period.

99 weeks of (tax dollars)unemployment GONE not one of those people found work and began PAYING taxes at the end of the 99 weeks, instead moved into other entitlements like, food stamps and Social Security Disability, draining the Federal Reserve further.........IT HAS TO STOP.

Republicans in the Congress are doing what they were HIRED to do.........block the spending. God help us where we would be right now if 2010 never happened.

@great prez?...Where would one start attempting to debunk, your so-called "breaking news". What alternate universe or planet for that matter did you glean your research from? Those of us on THIS PLANET, are living with the failed policies of Barak Obama.

Healthcare Reform alone which was suppose to be "cost and debt neutral" is expected to cost billions more than "first expected"(ya right).

Then you add on Obama restrictions to domestic drilling, the Keystone (play to your wacko base) Pipeline, regulations against drilling on Federal Reserves(because he can't stop private land drilling).

Almost a trillion wasted on "union bail outs", and it is now being projected that GM may still need to file bankruptcy anyway.

I could type until my fingers fell off........just add up the billions of tax dollars wasted on failed "green energy" and "obamaphones" and that WASTE could have funded other ENTITLEMENTS you liberals demand, but the money wasted is GONE, why are you not upset about that?

Whats the point? I am simply posting the OBVIOUS to someone who is no longer or maybe never has been attuned to any sense of reality...........and I am not qualified to diagnose mental illness.

While Barack Obama will continue to be President of the United State this Iowa newspaper will be reduced to 3 days a week plus the internet to reach its subscribers. In the grand scheme of things, this is no big deal.

This endorsement is symptomatic of a very close race. About a month ago, when Romney's secretly taped utterances regarding "the 47%" came to light, I thought it was all over.

I was wrong. Romney weathered that storm, and made the President look wandering, uncertain and indecisive in the first debate.

Right now it is all balanced on a knife edge, with Romney holding a narrow popular lead in most polls, and Obama holding a commanding lead in the electoral college. Something earth shattering could shift matters, but I think now it will go right down to the wire ...and there will probably be some voting controversy somewhere in the country.

          Reply#118 - Sun Oct 28, 2012 8:06 AM EDT

The only STORM caused by Romney's "47%" was a fictional controversy liberal fabrication. Only liberals saw it as a "slight" towards average people,

those in touch with reality knew Romney was merely stating the OBVIOUS.........those who DEMAND entitlements such as "obamaphones" are not going to vote to kill OFF the "golden goose".

Romney was not talking about those in our society who are vulnerable, such as the elderly and disabled. It is these people for whom the "safety net" was put in place.

It is the responsibility of the rest of US...to be responsible for ourselves and our families. Yeah no one wants to flip burgers, but if that is what one needs to do to take care of oneself....then?

For 10 years I had TWO JOBS.....until laid off from the 2nd one when Obama took office. Well into my 50's I was putting in as much as 70 hours a week, and still would be at nearly 60 if other job was still there.

BUT THAT IS WHAT YOU DO.......as a responsible adult........you don't ask for handouts....and that is what Romney was talking about..........hand ups...OKAY.

Well, Mruserhead, I was not really trying to stir up controversy. But in the interest facts, which sometimes scares conservatives, the 47% to which Romney alluded are not all sitting at home, awaiting a handout. The national welfare rolls in 2012 were at 4.1% of the population.

The 47% is largely made up of three groups:

          1. The working poor, people who work, sometimes work two jobs, but whose income still puts them below the poverty line. They pay no income taxes due to earned income tax credits, a program implemented by that great liberal and socialist, Ronald Reagan.
          2. The military, people serving our country, off at compensation rates below what they could earn in private life.
          3. Retired people, on social security.

None of the above groups constitute people who are sitting around awaiting a handout. These are people who are working, sometimes like you, at multiple jobs, or are retired. Rather than ask why they are not paying income taxes, maybe you should ask why so many working people in this country cannot make enough money to pay income taxes?

But... that might require a little intellectual honesty, and perhaps even some thinking.

BTW: Romney has since said that he "simply got it wrong" regarding his "47 percent" remark. His true feelings, or just another cowardly flip-flop? I'll let you judge for yourself.

I am not surprised. But no mention that the GOP/Tea Party had as its number priority to make Obama a one term president, yes , their number one priority; not the economy. But this paper does not acknowledge this FACT. I guess this paper is blind to facts. Again, race trumps everything. Romney can say anything, do anything and go virtually unchecked except for the folks on MSNBC! Unfortunately, too many folks who should be watching MSNBC don't because of their own biases and prejudices. I occasionally tune into FOX, etc., to listen for a hot second their craziness and racial biases that they 'try' to hide. The recent report that Americans are more prejudiced now than four years ago is very troubling. Where are our religious leaders, esp on the evangelical side to stand up and speak out against racism, the sin, I believe is the one sin that impacts all facets of our daily living. Where are you evangelicals???

@craig.....Obama could have made the ECONOMY his number ONE PRIORITY when he had Democrat majority in all three houses....choosing instead to RAM HCR down Americas throat(a debacle that now is being found out to have billions of unforeseen costs).

And the Tea Party was born out of the frustration of those who got pissed off because healthcare and jobs connected too, represent about 1/3 of this Nations economy.

Healthcare should have been offered to the public as a BILL and been VOTED on by WE THE PEOPLE. Instead Democrats simply because they could, used their majority and RAMMED HCR down Americas throat...........

then in a DISPLAY of true Democrat ARROGANCE........NANCY PELOSI..........marched down Pennsylvania Ave........with and oversized gavel and did an "in your face" victory lap..........

Bush responded for the 9/11 attacks by radical Muslims. The radical Muslims responded to Obama spiking the football and dancing in the end zone for over a year. When the ambassador called for help, Obama told the Navy seals to stay away and let him die. The seals went in anyway, risking court martial. If only our President had such guts. But he had to cover himself in an election year by blaming terrorism on a video. Maybe this latest breach of duty is why the Register endorsed Romney.

Invading Iraq was NOT "responding to the 9/11 attacks" Roadkill. It was SAUDI radical muslims that attacked America. This has never and will never be responded to. The killing of Bin Laden was only a partial response. The 9/11 victims will never see true justice unless Saudi Arabia is made to pay. Just imagine if the attackers were Iraqi, no one would be questioning the invasion of Iraq if this was the case.

You libs have had the analysis all wrong. The surge wasn't due to Obama's performance at all. It had more to do with the 67 millions viewers meeting Romney for the first time and deciding afterwards that Romney is not the evil person the Obama campaign had advertised and seeing him as a viable alternative. The voters are ready to try someone else.

You want to blame someone look at Wall Street that started selling bad mortgages as an investment and banks for giving loans that they knew would not be paid back. The banking and financial services industry knew they could take risks and would be saved by the government because they were too big to fail. Stop blaming Obama. Romney wants to deregulate Wall Street and banks so they can play those shell games just like he does.He opposed the auto bailout then made money from it with Delphi.

All electoral college maps have President Obama ahead by double digits....even Rasmussen.

538 has a good article about all the polling, the past history of who was ahead at this point and how many times they won the election. 538 is a very trusted and accurate site....read the article it is informative.

They endorse Republicans because they think Republicans are most likely to compromise and actually get something done? They must have them confused with somebody else. Republicans hate compromise and, being so superior to the rest of us, see absolutely no need to do so.

The editor of the Des Moines Register said he wants the gridlock imploded by electing Romney. So Mitch McConnel and the Republican House declare that their goal is to obstruct to keep Obama from getting a second term and this editor blames Obama. It must be the victims fault when they get mugged too.

Interesting, isn't it, that the Register expects a more cooperative opposition party than Obama got? A The only reason anyone might think Romney could end partisan gridlock is by expecting the Democratic Party to forego the obstructionist tactics that the GOP demonstrated so well. Apparently the Register think so in rewarding the candidate of the most bitterly partisan tactics ever used.

And one has to wonder how the Register can be so blind to what numerous experts say about the impossibility of the direction that Romney intends to "lead." The Medicare Trust says that the Romney/Ryan plans will lead to insolvency years earlier than Obama's. Numerous experts say that Romney's tax rate cuts combined with his other promises can't work. Then there are his many gaffes on foreign policy, to say nothing of his Bush era advisors on the subject.

As to "success" in MA, Romney's approval rating was 10 points lower than Obama's present rating. His "balanced budget" was required by law and was achieved by cuts in programs and raises in hundreds of fees. His "working across the aisle" claims ignores the hundreds of vetoes overridden by the MA legislature. His bailout of the Olympics was achieved by ("horrors") a tax payer bailout.

I am one digusted Iowa voter!

Excellent post Susan. The sad thing is that electing Romney may very well help the partisanship, but only because the democrats are more willing to compromise and would never obstruct with the amount of unreasonableness that the republicans have. These scumbags even obstructed their own ideas in an all out attempt to make Obama and the country fail and should not be rewarded for it no matter what.
