RICHMOND, VA -- President Barack Obama touted the endorsement of former Secretary of State and retired Gen. Colin Powell's endorsement, suggesting it was a nod of support to his record on foreign policy and defense.
Addressing a crowd of 15,000 here at a public park, Obama said, "I was proud to learn that we have Colin Powell's support in this campaign."
"I'm grateful to him for his lifetime of service to his country both as a soldier and a diplomat. And every brave American who wears this uniform of this country should know that as long as I am your Commander in Chief, we will sustain the strongest military this world has ever known.
President Obama received a sudden endorsement from retired General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell via morning television. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
"We will be relentless in pursuit of our enemies. Those are promises I've kept."
Military spending is a key issue in swing state Virginia, home to several bases as well as many civilian defense employees, who live primarily in Northern Virginia.
"President Obama says that ‘trust matters,’ but Virginians already know that he cannot be trusted to protect our military or our economy. Under President Obama, our military stands to be cut by nearly $1 trillion and he has no plan whatsoever to save the 136,000 Virginia jobs that could be eliminated because of his cuts," said Curt Cashour, Romney's spokesman for Virginia. "To make matters worse, the president’s liberal policies are killing jobs in Virginia as we speak."
After his speech, the president was headed to Chicago where he would become the first sitting president to vote early in person.

So, I guess that there were others who were standing Presidents?

General Powell is a good man. If not for his wife's medical situation, he could have been President.
Well DF, looks like I should have done some research. In retrospect , looking at Verlanders history in WS Games, last night shouldn't have been a surprise. Pretty big disappointment, though.
His stats last night were nearly identical to game 1 in 2006. Hmmmm
Well Fister, tonight. We wanted to win at least 1 of 2, just thought the sure 1 was last night.
"That's why they play the games" (And hold the elections)
Leyland is the one who should have done the research...
5-6 days off is a LIFETIME in baseball. It is gonna be tough for the Tigers to get their act together against a hot team with two guys who are currently unconscious in Scutaro and the Panda...Good luck!
All this early voting may have an unintended consequence for the Dems someday. Several years (and contracts ) ago, in what was dubbed the largest non-monetary contribution to a political party at the time, the UAW negotiated "Election Day" as a paid holiday, thus giving the heavily left -leaning UAW a paid day off to vote.
I wonder with all the emphasis on early and absentee voting, if this day off is now obsolete?
Probably not much of a chance of ever taking a holiday away from the contract, but I can see them moving it to some kind of floating holiday thereby removing the "incentive" to get out and vote on election day.

Win or lose, there are a lot of folks here who wnat Leyland gone next year. Not me, he provides a whole summers worth of entertainment on the sports talk shows.
Pretty sure I mentioned I didn't want to play a team on a roll. Last night was exhibit A as to why.
Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, ALbert Pujolz and......
Pablo Sandaval???????
WCA, if this turns out to be the "all nighter" some are projecting, I'll bet many in the eastern and central time zones might want to have the day after election day off.
When he was manager of the Padres, for a long time I refered to Bochy as the idiot. Some of his game day decisions would make me scratch my head. He used to infuriate me with the pitcher batting and the catcher on first, fake the bunt and have the pitcher swing away. the pitcher would miss and the catcher would be dead at 2nd trying to steal. One thing Bochy always did well was handle his pitchers. Over the course of a season, that more than made up for a botched "butcher boy" play here and there.
dangerfield - I've heard Colin Powell speak and had the absolute pleasure of meeting him. He is a great American. I was not aware his wife had a medical condition. I knew he didn't want his personal life out for view but I had no idea why. He is greatly respected by the men and women serving our country.
Obama/Biden 2012
In NYC, I was always allowed time off to vote. I don't really know if that's the case everywhere. Early voting has the potential to bite both parties in the glutes, as there has been many an October surprise in Presidential politics.
What if there was a Tom Eagleton situation or a scandal of another ilk and millions had already cast their vote.
I believe that elections should be held on ELECTION DAY, and that the two teams with the best records should meet in the World Series...
God help us all, the commies are on the loose, under every bed, doing their damndest to turn states Red, skew the polls, fight the biased media, and now of all things, defeclt, defeclt, deflect from political discourse to that commie past time, baseball. Where's McCarthy when you need him???
Meanwhile, Powell, thanks for showing us the difference between the GOP and the Tali-TeaParty. My question to Powell; Will the GOP every kick those Koch loving marionettes out the door and let them flounder on their own, or will the party continue to let them suck the GOP party dry?
I wonder who the SEALS are backing?!

That he did! And, yet, I watched an excruciatingly long piece on Trump following the Powell announcement, on the morning show. Something is wrong with today's media that they devote equal time to a nut like Trump.
The good Colin Powell called Romney:
"A Moving Target..."
The only thing Romney is sure about are those tax cuts for the rich, gutting safety nets, Obamacare, and Wall Street Reform.
Gotta look after Adelson and the 1%-ers!
Everything else is up for grabs - no matter how many millions are watching.

Why would they vote for Romney, who proved at the last debate he is ill-prepared and unqualified to be Commander-in-Chief and failed to mention our veterans in his acceptance speech or any of the three debates.

the Republican Party is losing out by not cultivating candidates like Powell. I think Colin Powell is a good man who was delt a bad administration card.

It will be weeks and a judiciary decision or two before we know the results of a few counties that can make or break one of the candidates. Count on it.
You guys all love to tout when someone changes parties and becomes Democrats, but you demonize anyone who goes from Democrat to Republican. Ronald Reagan was a Democrat before he was a Republican. He was a great president.
In your eyes perhaps. The view from this citizen; he sucked. Shall we start with slamming the middle-class with the single largest tax hike in the history of the country.
He was a B-rated actor, a B-rated Governor, and a B-rated president!!

I'm still waiting for the Don to be an equal opportunity media whore and offer Romney $5 million to release his taxes.
Tit for tat, taxes for taxes, right?
It must be nice for Trump to give away money after filing for bankruptcy 4 times. Trump is not any better than the Enron's or the WorldCom's of this world.
[You guys all love to tout when someone changes parties and becomes Democrats...]
Colin Powell didn't "change parties"...he's a registered Republican.

The bottom line according to the super smart Joy Reid whom I ♥... to win President Obama has to beat Mitt Romney AND the mainstream media. I personally believe our President can do it.

norcal - are krispy kremes allowed under michelle's dining guidelines? did the president know his picture was going to be taken. bet he gets cut off for awhile
Hate to clue you people, but the election won't be as close as you think.Romney has zero chance of winning. The media want's to keep it close so more suckers read their articles.
Every little bit helps. Powell is mostly a respected military figure. There are some on the left who aren't wild about him, but they are voting for President Obama anyway. Powell's endorsement should appeal to some undecided conservatives and that's exactly what the President needs. Nice timing.
PS - to the media: please stop touting those national poll numbers. They mean nothing. It isn't a national popular vote election and the fact that they are close does not tell the real story. It only stresses people out without providing them with the full picture.
Think about the people in your life who still have a landline phone, and then think of those who still actually answer it. It's not many, I'm sure, and I'd also bet that they are older voters. Those of us who only use cell phones tend to be younger and more liberal. We are not getting represented in these polls. People always poo-poo this notion as not of consequence, but it is absolutely important to how elections go. It's a process that needs to change with the times.
Of course I still want to get out the vote, but I think those of us who are voting for President Obama need to chill out on those national poll numbers.
If you are anything like me, it will at least help you sleep better over the ten days or so.
Great points above malarson! I don't think any of my friends have a land line but my parents do! I gave mine up about a year ago. Thanks, I'll rest better as well.

suggesting it was a nod of support to his record on foreign policy and defense.
You think?
I watched Charlie Rose harass Colin Powell this morning, over his endorsement, and I loved it when the General snapped "what party do YOU belong to?" to Rose. They ended up laughing over the exchange but, for my part, I wish more leaders would snap back at the broadcast media.
Powell's endorsement will also appeal to other moderate republican's like him that feel abandoned by their party.
I've kept my landline because that is where my father calls me (he's 92). Every night when I get home from work is a recorded call from some Republican. Too bad they are wasting their resources calling me. I'm sorry my cats have to listen to this.
You're right about the national poll numbers---difference is the battleground states and the President is clearly winning there.
Steeler Fan You're right about the national poll numbers---difference is the battleground states and the President is clearly winning there.
Which polls has the president up to the magic 50% mark Steeler?
At this point, it will be about who energizes their party to get out and vote.
sirie,
The magic number is not 50% necessarily.
Bush won over Kerry with about 48% going into election day.
It is all about electoral count.
Also when a third party or "other" gets over 5% of the vote in a state it makes a difference for the two party candidates.
Remember Florida and the Nader vote total. its a cautionary tale.
Wow, Obama stooping to new lows... HAS Any past president gone this far?
In a forthcoming article in Rolling Stone, Obama reportedly told author Douglas Brinkley that children can instinctively tell that his opponent is "a bullsh!tter." Politico published an excerpt Thursday morning.

When I read this story earlier, I knew some republican was going to start whining about it not being presidential, or saying some nonsense about the president cursing. Look here: I WANT my president to call it as he sees it. And I certainly don't mind it that the president uses a cuss word or two (or 3 or 4). We're in 2012. People cuss. Big fu*ckin deal. I prefer that to Opie Romney with his Gosh, golly jeepers creepers lingo straight out of Mayberry RFD...

I suspect that Gen. Powell waited until after the foreign policy debate to see if Mitt did anything to give the general reason to endorse him. We know how that turned out. Mitt's neocon advisors from the Bush administration didn't do a good job of prepping him.
How great that President Obama is voting early. Sure wish we had early voting here in Pa.

Steeler Fan-
I love the way General Colin Powell articulated it.
"One day he has a certain strong view about staying in Afghanistan but then on Monday night he agrees with the withdrawal, same thing in Iraq. On almost every issue that was discussed on Monday night, Governor Romney agreed with the President with some nuances. But this is quite a different set of foreign policy views than he had earlier in the campaign. And my concern ... is that sometimes I don't sense that he has thought through these issues as thoroughly as he should have."
"This is something that was put in place by Congress and while we're talking about the two candidates for president let's not forget that Congress bears a lot of responsibility for many of the problems that we have now. They're the ones that write the appropriations bills. They're the ones that pass the legislation for more spending and for the various entitlement programs that people have trouble with."
I have to sign off now. I don't know if the President will vote in his present or at the Board of elections down town. But, it's worth an effort to get a glimpse of him while he's home and perhaps a picture before his second term.

Rick Sanchez: Obama on the Ropes
By Rick Sanchez
Published October 24, 2012
Fox News Latino
Polls show Obama is on the ropes
If we learned anything during Monday's third and final presidential debate, it's this: President Obama is on the ropes, and he knows it. His debate style—scrappy and combative—gave him away early and often. Momentum is no longer his friend.
The comfortable lead that the president enjoyed heading into the first debate, the one where he was confidently non-existent, has all but evaporated and he's now barely hanging on in swing states that were once considered "in the bag."
The proof is in the delegate rich battleground states of "FLOHVA"—Florida, Ohio and Virginia—and the other toss-up state of North Carolina. In recent polls in each of these states, the president's lead has been erased, leaving Romney to close the gap or even move ahead.
In Ohio, the president's lost a lead of 6 points from two weeks ago and is now either tied with or losing to Romney. Trend: Romney.
In Florida, the two most recent polls by Rasmussen and Angus/Reid have Romney up by five. There are even whispers in Florida of the Obama camp pulling out altogether. It's a far cry from the 3 to 4 point lead Obama was enjoying back in September. Advantage: Romney.
In Virginia, where polls had been all over the place the past month, some now show Romney with the lead. Here again, the two most recent polls—Wenzel Strategies and Rasmussen—have Romney with a 2 and 3 point lead, respectively. Trend: Romney.
And finally, in North Carolina, the picture for Obama is the bleakest of all. In late September, the race was a tie. Now? Romney is up by six in the most recent Rasmussen poll. Advantage: Romney.
This electoral contest has had Obama ahead for most of the 12 rounds these two have been in the electoral ring. But now, Romney has Obama on the ropes. The question is whether he can pull off a knockout.
Romney has a chance—only a chance—but he's got to change his playbook to make it happen. From the primaries through last night, Romney has been the management consultant candidate. And like a consultant, he critiques and tweaks the ideas of others—which works for consultants trying to fix other peoples' businesses and strategies, but doesn't work so well in bare-knuckle politics.
Rather than giving credit to Obama for what's worked, which he has done many times in the debates like a paid business consultant pointing out what's working for the client before revealing his recommended adjustments to those strategies, Romney instead needs to stand up and take ownership of the underlying ideas themselves. After all, he could easily argue that much of what has worked under Obama has been based on conservative and Republican principles. Watching the debate, one is struck by how often Romney could have—and should have—turned Obama's successes into his own.
Let's take healthcare, President Obama's signature piece of legislation which Romney says he doesn't like and will repeal. What Romney doesn't do is emphasize that he invented the core of Obamacare in Massachusetts, and that it's similar to healthcare proposals offered in the 1970s by President Nixon and in the '80s and '90s by Republicans in Congress—all of which makes Romney the right guy to fix it and perfect it on a national level.
Foreign policy? Romney says Obama has made the US weaker. How? Not exactly clear, since President Obama has killed Bin Laden and, by all accounts, has weakened al Qaeda. In fact, what President Obama has done is continue many of the Bush policies that he railed against in 2008. He didn't close Gitmo. He ended operations in Iraq not in 2009 on his self-imposed deadline, but in 2011 which was Bush's deadline. He had a troop surge in Afghanistan, just like Bush did in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama's playbook consists of reconstituted Republican foreign policy initiatives and strategies that Romney could and should own, rather than criticize.
Immigration: This past summer, Obama announced that his administration would not deport undocumented immigrants who met the criteria of the DREAM Act—a bipartisan effort—that is rooted at least in part in the policies of Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and John McCain. Own it, Governor Romney.
The economy? This is where the president is most vulnerable. Americans don't care what countries Obama has visited. They do care about putting gas in the tank and food on the table and this is where Romney should be strongest. It's not necessarily a Republican strength, but it is his strength. Paint a picture of a terrible job market, of anemic employment numbers, of spiraling debt, of unaffordable education costs, of a real estate market still in the toilet, and tell Americans how you'll use your unique business acumen to make it better. Close the deal, Governor.
Governor Romney, make this case to the American people. With less than two weeks left, and a president reeling in the polls, stand up and take ownership of Republican policies, especially those that Obama has called his own. Make people understand that the ideas that are working and moving the country forward, the ideas that President Obama takes credit for, are Republican ideas and yes, they're your ideas, Governor.
He's on the ropes and this, sir, could be your knockout blow.
Never voted for EITHER Bush candidates Seeking, you know that! I don't condone ANYONE doing illegal drugs....
And, no one IS doing illegal drugs that is running. So you're comment was way off base.
ElectionDay - stop reading your own BS. The President isn't reeling in the polls - he's gaining! Oh, and Romney has never had an idea so no, the ideas aren't his!

Who Won the Debates? 49% Say Romney, 41% Obama
Thursday, October 25, 2012
Most voters consider the three presidential debates at least somewhat important to how they will vote, and a plurality of those that watched thinks Mitt Romney was the overall debate winner.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds just eight percent (8%) of Likely U.S. Voters did not watch any of the debates. Sixty-three percent (63%) watched a portion or all of all three debates. Fourteen percent (14%) watched some or all of one of the debates, 15% some or all of two of the prime-time television encounters.
ElectionDay - you clearly don't have a clue do you? But don't worry - you're a good little Republican. No facts just the lies you continue to post.

Cubans are privileged, the minute they hit US territorial waters or sand they are automatic residents and are given a giant hand up while everybody else scrounges to make it. Your Fox article is worthless.

I guess that Powell was impressed with the Bengazi coverup. It is very impressive how zero coverage has been on MSNBC, CBS or ABC news.
.... YOU WANT TO BLAME OBAMA FOR WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE EAST? Not to discount the American loss of those four men killed ... May God bless them and their families ....
THIS IS WHAT BUSH DID or DIDN'T DO ON AMERICAN SOIL ....
What Bush Knew Before Sept.11
"We were trying to figure out what they (al Qaeda) would do. We never had specifics about time, place, MO (method of operation)."
U.S. intelligence official, commenting anonymously.
President Bush was told in the months before the Sept. 11 attacks that Osama bin Laden's terrorist network might hijack U.S. passenger planes - information which prompted the administration to issue an alert to federal agencies - but not the American public.
CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin says the warning was in a document called the President's Daily Brief, which is considered to be the single most important document that the U.S. intelligence community turns out. The document did not, however, mention the possibility of planes being flown
into buildings.
An agent in the FBI's Arizona office did, however, speculate about that, writing in his case notes about Zacarias Moussaoui that Moussaoui seemed like the type of person who was capable of flying an aircraft into the World Trade Center.
It was the observation of an agent taking notes as he thought about his case - an observation whose significance simply did not register at the time.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer says that while President Bush was told last summer that bin Laden's al Qaeda network might hijack planes, he did not receive information suggesting that airplanes might be used as suicide bombs, as they were on Sept. 11.
Fleischer emphasizes that "until the attack took place, I think it's fair to say that no one envisioned that as a possibility."
The revelation about the president's security briefing comes as House and Senate Intelligence Committee investigators prepare for public hearings beginning next month on whether an intelligence community which spends $30 billion a year should have been able to provide a more specific warning in advance of Sept. 11.
The New York Times reports that an FBI agent in Arizona warned his superiors last summer that bin Laden might be sending students to U.S. flight schools.
Investigators have since Sept. 11 suspected bin Laden's al Qaeda network of masterminding the terror attacks on America, which killed more than 3,000 people.
Republicans don't want to see the bigger picture .... the middle east has been at war since forever ... the attacks on the embassy happened in the middle east .... Bush was for-warned too ... and did nothing and they attacked us AMERICAN SOIL .... HUGE DIFFERENCE .....
MIDDLE EAST - 4 KILLED
AMERICAN SOIL - 3000 KILLED .... YES REPUBLICANS EXPLAIN THAT ONE .....
MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA .... AND AMERICA VOTE FOR OBAMA 2012
NBC - President Barack Obama touted the endorsement of former Secretary of State and retired Gen. Colin Powell's endorsement, suggesting it was a nod of support to his record on foreign policy and defense.
NBC, could it be that the economy has no effect on Powell? By the way I apologize if you already mentioned about the 10,000 plus crowd that Mitt just got in Colorado. Please don't be so bias.
Powell mentioned the economy and noted it's recovering.
Saying it will recover faster if we go back to tax cuts and deregulation is the definition of insanity. That's how we got into this mess. It can't also be the way out.
America elected another "CEO" in 2000, one who like Romney was (supposedly) strong on economic issues and (obviously) unconcerned with foreign affairs.
How did that turn out? The CEO-in-Chief outsourced foreign policy decisions to the same neo-cons advising Romney. Those trusted advisers led us into two wars, one of them unnecessary, one of them ill-managed, and both of them unfunded.
The election of that businessman to the presidency ultimately led to thousands of lost American lives and an economic catastrophe.
If you truly were a "Concern Citizen" you would not vote for Mitt Romney.
Concern Citizen-856329
Or is he just pragmatic enough to think that it is better to be poor and alive than rich and dead?
A famous American general once said in reference to war, " if you break it you own it".
In 2003 General Powell as Sctry of State, did the same thing President Obama did in September 2012.The same thing and they did it in the U.N. What they did was lie to the world. Powell about Iraq and Al Queda link and Obama about an "American" video. Both untrue and both got people killed.
General Powell got us support for the Iraq war, (which he apologized for on his book tour earlier this year) and President Obama did it about a video that hadn't even been seen by 2,000 people by September 11 attack in Benghazi.
Now Powell gives accolades about Obamacare? You don't know anything about economics, the President is bankrupting the US, but you'll be able to stay on the book circuit in DC.
General Powell, you should follow General MacAuthur's advice and simply fade away. It would be a great service to the nation after your remarkably reckless decade.
TJ Fod.
Powell the UN what he was told to tell the UN. Please don't drag down a great General and patriotic American because he doesn't support your guy. This is why we vote, because everyone doesn't support the same person.
Obama unloads on Romney in Davenport, Iowa
Obama was more forceful than usual on the stump, using a booming voice to tear into Romney as an untrustworthy double-talker and then, in more measured tones, to concede he hasn’t achieved all the goals he spelled out in Iowa four years ago.
so, Obama is untrustworthy, failing to achieve all his promises, yet he calls someone else out as untrustworthy? Pot/Kettle??
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20121025/NEWS09/310250043/Obama-sharpens-criticism-of-Romney-during-Davenport-stop?elections
Some would argue that "Old soldiers never ..." stems from a British Army's C20 parody of the song 'Kind Thoughts Can Never Die' ca1916.
And then there is ... Old plumbers never die, they just smell that way.
TJ Fod, You fade away!... General Powell whom I have met is a very gracious and down to earth person he is also extremly intelligent when it comes down not just to the military but he was one of our BEST diplomats in both war and peace... a 4 STAR GENERAL!... from immirgrant ancestry he is trully what America is about!... for him to put his voice behind the President is confirmation that we ARE on the right track and shouldn't change our path....
Powell knows he was wrong about Iraq and has had the courage to say so. Too bad the neocon chicken hawks left over from the Bush administration who are advising Mitt Romney don't have the courage to admit they were wrong, too. They're too busy planning the next senseless bloody war if Mitt gets elected.
There is no way a prominent republican could look at the issues and choose Obama. What this says to me is that race continues be to a factor in this election. Obama has 99.8 % of the black vote which now includes the general.
Jim, I'd be happy too but you've already done me the favor. Really? So by your line of reasoning, we all vote based on our skin color????? Does Ann Coulter know about you? By the way, where does Condoleezza Rice fit in with your reasoning????
Good grief!
Obama/Biden 2012
If race were the only factor, please explain Herman Cain, Michael Steel, Condaleeza Rice, and, for the other Not old white guys, Marco Rubio ?
Colin Powell endorsed President Obama because President Obama is the best person to be President.
Jim - what a ludicrous post. Many prominent Republicans will be voting for Obama but probably not announcing it. My guess is the Bush family will vote Obama. To demean Colin Powell by saying he is voting based on race instead of capability shows you are the one who is racist. How pathetic so many Republicans can't get past the color of a person's skin. You're pathetic!
Obama/Biden 2012
[Obama has 99.8 % of the black vote which now includes the general.]
Colin Powell said he voted for President Obama in 2008...nothing new here...on to the next shiny nickel for you.
I knew it would come up! Jim Vercio! I was waiting for the ignorant comment about race being the reason that Colin Powell would endorse President Obama(for the second time!). Yes, we know, the only reason anyone endorses the president is because they are black like he is. Thank you for the continuation that the new republican party's racial bias is still firmly rooted.
Wow Jim, you are way off. 2 out of 5 republicans in Ohio think that the president was born somewhere other than the U.S. Stop being a dumbass, Powell votes for who he believes in. Period.
I am in tourism, and you would be amazed at how many people don't know that Alaska IS in the U.S. So, I could assume that 2 out of 5 Republicans probably don't know that Hawaii IS in the U.S. LOL
Alaska Girl,
Guess, we need to teach geography to even to the adult tourists.
LOL
When many of them think think that Alaska is part of Canada? Yeah, I'm thinking a strong course of geography is needed in many adults.
New Gingrich and Rick Santorum endorsed Romney because he's the only white man running for president, then. Newt and Rick claimed he would be a horrible candidate during the primaries, so race must have been the determining factor for them.
seeking -- is it your opinion about the bush's voting for obama or have you evidence of such? if you want to claim harry reid protocol that is fine
Read! SS stated that it was her "guess".
Powell's endorsement = racisim. If Obama was white, Powell would not have endorsed Obama for his plan or lack of plan. No suprise, No real news.
Sure mcrich, the flawless logic of a moron...
Powell one of the last decent republicans.
If Colin Powell and Jon Huntsman ran on a ticket together, they would probably pick up 1/3 of the Democrats, all of the moderate republicans and all of the independents who have been driven out of the GOP.
Powell/Huntsman 2016 !!!
dirp - I have to admit, I'd definitely look at that ticket. But, they'd have to run as Independents. The GOP would never tolerate their up-to-date ideas!
Obama/Biden 2012
I would also take a good look at a Powell/Huntsman ticket. I would also look at a Hillary/Powell ticket. Now, wouldn't that be something?! Two former Secretary of State leaders running for Pres and VP? I would seriously look at that as a great match-up.
You know Colin Powell's reasoning for endorsing President Obama? Could you perhaps enlighten us as to what that reasoning might be, in your opinion?
Alaska - a Hillary/Powell ticket would be outstanding!!!!!
Obama/Biden 2012
I know, right?! I think it would be extremely interesting to see a split ticket campaign. Wouldn't that phuck up the Republicans?! LOL
For right now, I would rather hope it will be a Hillary/Warren ticket!
Not 100% sure Hillary will be up for it, so a Powell/Warren ticket would do nicely also.
seeking -- hillary is toast. having to man-up when obama didn't has ended her career. she and billy will just ravel the world as good 1%ers do.
Its amazing that the liberal left believes that Powell is one of the last 'decent republicans'. It is my opinion that the accolades of the left are not a compliment.
I believe that Lieberman is the only 'decent democrat' in the US Senate.
Hillary = toast!
For those of you that believe Hillary can ever run for office, forget it. She was 'dumbed down' to take the fall for a broken foreign policy decision. Bengazi has sealed Hillary's fate. Obama has zero integrity and should have taken responsibility on day 1 of this tragedy.
I admire any Republican or Democrat who seriously considers the worth, qualifications, and positions of both candidates running for office. Those who painstakingly weigh the pros and cons of each side, taking into account not only where the country currently stands, but in which direction it would be most advantageous to follow, as well as which one is most equipped to get us there. And after all this deliberation, should they determine that the candidate chosen to represent their own party in a given election isn't the best fit, I hope he/she has the courage and conviction to cast their vote for the other side. All votes cast should be in the name of the greater good. If ever there was a situation where personal wants and desires should take a back seat, this would be it.
Many discussions are undertaken in our society on the subject of wasting precious resources, and I think our right to vote should be premiere among them. Not voting is a cop-out, plain and simple. We, as adults, are allotted only one vote per person, and all too often we forget the importance of this gift. It used to be considered as a rite of passage, but now, all too often it's seen as a nuisance. We owe it to ourselves, to our communities, to our nation as a whole, to devote at least as much time to educating ourselves on our candidates and where they stand, as we do to the trivialities of what we're going to wear each day, or what television show to watch. Not voting is indeed a waste, but casting an uneducated vote for or against a candidate, when you haven't even bothered to learn where they stand is much worse.
Obama/Biden
General and Secretary Colin Powell is a good man. He was thrown under the bus by the Bush Administration and thus is fully aware of what Neocons are capable of. That is why he is supporting Obama over the Neocon supported Romney. And, No, it has nothing to do with race.
Personally, I am less impressed with the notion that a general would support the president than I am a conservative leaner is supporting Obama... to the extent that these sorts of things move me at all. I suspect that most won't really be moved by endorsements one way or the other, but I haven't heard any crossover appeal for Romney. And the really fiscally conservative people... ie the ones who are serious about the issue and who actually are looking for a middle road solution that would really work, a la Clinton and the Republican congress during the '90's... haven't shown a great deal of support for Romney's plans.
Romney talks a lot about how he has turned things around at various points and how he's balanced budgets, but when you dig a little, you discover that most of the time, his solution involved nothing more than holding out his hand for a giveaway from Uncle Sam or just claiming through the courts that the debts incurred somehow no longer existed. Ie... Bain and Company when he asked for a bailout for them, then the Salt Lake Games, then Massachusetts... well, the problem here is that there is no 'big brother' for him to beg for the money this time around.
So at that point, does he just go with what his business instincts have always been? Ie, just divest the nation of all of its existing obligations? Because that's essentially his business model. If the business is in trouble, he does not really work to fix it. He more or less just throws up his hands and claims the business no longer owes anything to anyone because it no longer exists. Can you really just Chapter 11 America? I guess you'd get rid of all of those nasty entitlements that way, but I suspect the wreckage left behind wouldn't really resemble the country anymore.
Michael Thompson, excellent post and possibly the best I've read today.
Obama/Biden 2012
Correct, Good post.
Don't know if anyone has noticed, but the Egyptian Security forces have killed the main Al Qaeda suspect in the Behghazi attacks and several of his cohorts. Actually, his own bomb blew him to pieces.
Wait -- Obama brought donuts to those firefighters? Donuts??
Welp, that does it!!
#shoudhavebroughticecream #donutsareforcops
Romney/Ryan 2012 - A New Hope
I bet the donuts gotten eaten up anyway, Krispy Kremes way better than store bought 7 11 Cookies, ya think? Romney Ryan bad for the world and worse for America.
Obama 2012
Barack is going to be in the White House Dog House if Michelle sees that photo of him handing out Krispy Kreme donuts.
Houston,
Yes, First Lady Michelle will put "Bro" in the dog house for real for handing out those "fat pill" Krispy Creme donuts because she is so health conscious.
However, you gotta admit that Brother Barack is giving up the all around most primo donuts to the firefighters!
OBAMA-BIDEN 2012!
LTC Rattus, USA, ret.
Great point! How can our president contribute to what some in the White House have said:
'Obesity is the Greatest single security threat in our nation." (Michelle Obama)
He is in deep doo doo
General Powell stated his facts very well, and this very disciplined individual was specific. As a soldier General Powell knows that no leader can be a "Flip-Flopper." No more too add here!
A lot of hate chatter on the earlier thread regarding the General's endorsement. Posters were calling General Powell, traitor, a moron, a disgrace, retarded, racist, only achieved his rank by affirmative action, only voting for the President because blacks stick together and that's what they do, worthless, the worst Secretary of State bush ever had, a liar, the vortex of hate was just amazing. Republican right wing heads were exploding with vitriol. Shameful.
The General is truly a great man, a national treasure. I have the utmost respect for the man and was sorry to see his reputation tarnished by Bush neo-cons and their war dance. General Powell is absolutely correct, the President for 4 more, to finish what he tried to start, to keep America's reputation intact, to care for the least of our society.
Obama 2012
I guess you would have to read his book to find out if if affirmative action helped him get promoted. Affirmative action gives minorities a competitive choice. (Jul 2000)
Skyparrot,
We will win on 6 Nov. 2012!
Obama-Biden 2012!

He is only supporting nobama because he is a brother.
go back to 2008 and read his statements on why he wanted nobama elected. (It's time for a Black Man to be President)
General and Secretary of State Powell,
I served under you as a new lieutenant when you were a Corps Commander. You were both a great Soldier and a fine officer. You were also an outstanding Secretary of State until you realized that the team that you were a key member of was a no good outfit. Your son Mike and I know each other. He was a fine junior officer and I remember when he was injured in the accident. He is a great guy. Mike must have learned a lot from you.
Thank you for endorsing President Obama for the second time.

I was going to put your AKO e-mail down for everyone to e-mail you. You're such a jackwaggon. BTW i do not think that colon will be giving you an oer. (He's Retired!) so stop being a kiss arse!
No Mad,
Nobody will be giving me an OER as I am retired and in the second year of a Master of Social Work Program.
So you want my AKO Account? Why would you want my AKO acct."
Would you like my Cullum Number too?
By the way, the remedial English courses are still open. General Powell's first name is Colin. "Colon" is the large intestine that is filled with fecal matter as are you.

I must be a Geologist. Because you are a Rock.
No Mad,
I do not think that you are a geologist because I do not think that you could handle the math, hydrology, and physics.
However, in that same vein, I do believed that you are a direct living relative of coprolites.

I am old. Hence the term. Thanks. It just makes me smarter than the average Joe.
No Mad,
You are smarther than the Average Joe. You have the ambition to post here what you believe ant that is your right to free speech under our Consitution and I honor your opinions. I just don't share them.
You are a good person.
Just been called to have my prothetic left leg adjusted....it needs to be adjusted with a special tool by a V.A. tech.
No hard feelings, OK! God Bless this Great Land of Ours and all of her People, both Great and small,

Mad,
Thanks for the advice and concern. Sounds like you are an Old retired Soldier too? By the way, how did you know that everytime they adjust a prosthetic leg that they give you some cookies and orange juice, a mexoxicam (anti-inflamatory) and a 10 mg lortab?
Not too many people know that not only getting used to wearing and utilizing artificial limbs is quite painful and that whenever they are adjusted that the adjustment makes it uncomfortable for a few days?
You sound like a fellow that has not only talked the talk, but also walked the walk.
Very respectfully,

Do you really think this is going to change anyone's mind. How many people do you think are still out there shaking their heads going , decisions, decsions I just don't know who to vote for. And low and behold Colin Powell just allowed me to see the light. That looks like desperation to me, I wonder if they had to pay him the same way they paid Bill Clinton?
Billy,
General Powell also endorsed President Obama in 2008. So did Scott McClellan, one of President Bush's press secretaries from a prominent TX pioneer family.
LTC Rattus, USA, ret.
Romney has surrounded himself with the same people that got us into Iraq. Neither Romney or Ryan know squat about foreign policy, international relations, diplomacy, or diplomatuic history. Colin Powell well knows the implications of all that. His endorsement of Obama should win him the Nobel Peace Prize and a celebration in every country in the Western Hemisphere, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
True,
17 out of 24. Iraq was a defense contractor's wet dream. However, for those of us that deployed one or more times to Iraq .......it was a God awful Sh!tty mistake and a get over for the war contractors."
LTC Rattus, USA, ret.
That is great that the President has gotten an endorsement from a former Secretary of state and such a great military strategist. But I think that our biggest concern should be the state of and future of the economy.
I have read the President's economic plan for the next 4 years. The plan lacks a lot of details including a budget. Our President has no sense of budget so apparently that is why that most important part is missing. The most important part of it associated with our future is the following:
The President promised that the 2012 federal deficit would not exceed 229.27 billion dollars but the deficit actually exceeded 1.1 trillion dollars. If the President had kept his promise then this plan might make some sense but he didn't so the plan doesn't. There is other verbiage in the plan about both saving and spending but not much in the way of numbers. There are goals but not much about how much is it is going to cost to achieve those goals. Being a little optimistic I am assuming that the current deficit will continue for at least the next several years as a baseline. The President, as he has for the past 4 years, wants to increase taxes on the "rich" which if passed will take 100 billion dollars per year from the private sector and give it to the public sector for the President to play around with. The congress has not budged on this issue over the past 4 years but assuming that it does pass this would reduce the baseline deficit down to 1 trillion dollars per year.
The President's plan it to bring the troops home in 2014 so by 2015 the Federal government will no longer have any expenses regarding any foreign wars. For Obama's plan to work this peace dividend will have to be greater then 2 trillion dollars per year. To start paying off the debt the federal government has to run a surplus so according to the plan half of the peace dividend must be greater than 1 trillion dollars so the entire peace dividend must be greater 2 trillion dollars. 2 trillion dollars is more than twice our current annual defense expenditures including what we are paying on foreign wars. The peace dividend cannot possibly be what Obama needs for his plan to succeed so Obama's economic plan is mathematically impossible according to my analysis. For Obama's economic plan to be taken seriously a full budgetary analysis of it is required.
THOMAS PETERFFY - The facts about a BILLIONAIRE BOZO... with lots of money to spend:
by TennesseeEd
I know everyone has been seeing the "sad-droopy-eared-hound-dog-boo-hoo" type ad that the sorry LIAR republiCON, THOMAS PETERFFY, has been running, day and night, to degrade, demean and harass our president, PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, LIBERALS and the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. It seems to bring a fleeting tear to the eyes of those who do not know the facts behind THOMAS PETERFFY; but I am here to clear up the details concerning this sorry, sloth, LYING, self righteous and enormously wealthy "scoundrel putz". I call it "THE SECRET mitt romney - thomas peterffy FIVE POINT PLAN" for a better WEALTHY PERSON ECONOMY :
FACT and POINT # 1 : THOMAS PETERFFY was born in Hungary, a COMMUNIST country, not a SOCIALIST country. He fled Hungary to escape COMMUNISM, not SOCIALISM. There is a BIG difference; COMMUNISM is a POLITICAL system and SOCIALISM is an ECONOMIC system found in many political systems (even in the USA). So, Thomas Peterffy's painted scenario of a NATION OF POOR PEOPLE because of SOCIALISM is a pure LIE. Communism holds the responsibility for making the poor poorer and in forcing these "ad-pictured-poor" to work like dogs for the VERY RICH.
The ultimate DREAM of every USA republiCON is to have only TWO CLASSES of citizens; THE VERY RICH and THE VERY POOR. Of course the VERY POOR would be forced to work like a dog for the VERY RICH !!! This is COMMUNISM....(LOOK IT UP)
Monarchies like The British Isles, France and many other countries have a SOCIALIST government; they are doing GREAT and are NOT COMMUNIST !!! We already have MANY socialized economic structures here in The United States of America; they include the post office, schools, libraries, FBI, CIA, Secret Service, police , fire departments, parks, TVA dam hydro-electric systems, roads and highway departments, health departments and many other organizations you don't even know exist !!! These structures are SOUND because the government regulates and watches over them to keep them that way !!! So... what is the big deal and the BIG SCARE about OBAMACARE ??? Could it be that the wealthy has trillions invested into the INSURANCE and HOSPITAL INDUSTRY, much like the OIL INDUSTRY, and they are afraid of losing a Rolls Royce or two ???
FACT and POINT # 2 : THOMAS PETERFFY made this statement about how to be a CEO of a major manufacturing company that provides millions of JOBS : PETERFFY SAID, "I think the way a CEO runs his company is a reflection of his background. Business is a collection of processes, and my job is to AUTOMATE those processes so that they can be done with the greatest amount of efficiency.". In addition, during his financial career, as a RICH MAN, he consistently worked to replace MANUAL processes (requiring a human worker) with more AUTOMATED ones (no human worker) that he called more efficient !!! What a slap in the face this is to most of the middle class and all poor people who make up the working class of our nation !!! This is another way for a republiCON to become MORE and MORE WEALTHY, the MIDDLE CLASS becoming poor and the POOR becoming devastatingly POORER !!!
FACT and POINT # 3 : THOMAS PETERFFY has donated AT LEAST $60,000.00 in campaign contributions to the republiCON party, even though he claims to be an Independent. His other secret campaign contributions may be in the billion dollar range !!! This would hold true for a republiCON, because the sloth gop seething viper will do anything, say anything, tell any LIE and drop to any LOW to hold on to their RICHES !!! They would sell their souls and their own disabled mother to the devil if they thought it would make them the richest man on the planet !!! Speaking of souls; could these wealthy seething vipers be claiming to be GODLY(for religious righter votes, but really working for evil); being veiled members of the self righteous, corrupt mormon, baptist or other religious cults ??? Joining CHURCH and STATE is their ultimate goal; to kill off who they do not like....in the name of GOD and JESUS.
FACT and POINT # 4 : THOMAS PETERFFY has PERSONALLY paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS to CNN, CNBC and BLOOMBERG TELEVISION for these anti-socialism ads. This is a lot of money for a poor little "boo-hoo" refugee from a so-called socialist and communist country to spend, isn't it ???
FACT and POINT # 5 : THOMAS PETERFFY, as of September 2012, is worth over 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS ($4, 600,000,000.00). His favorite POLITICIAN is mitt romney and his worth is over $190 - 250 MILLION ($250,000,000.00) !!! Does this tell you who's side those two rich boys are on ??? Do I need to spell it out ???
Now I ask you, "Who do you think THOMAS PETERFFY and MITT ROMNEY supports; ..... the hard-working poor and middle class.....OR THE VERY LAZY NON-WORKING WEALTHY???"
PLEASE VOTE FOR OBAMA / BIDEN : The people who support the poor and hard working people of AMERICA !!! TennesseeEd
The differance between Robin Hood and Obama.
Robin Hood took from the King and gave to the poor.
Obama takes from everyone and gives to the government.
mcrich ... your post is just stupid ... and it's difference .. not differance .... use your spell-check dummy ... bet you're republican
There was a time I would have voted for Colin Powell had he run for President. His endorsement of Obama four years ago was understandable. His recent endorsement of a President who has proven himself to be completely inept causes me to conclude that skin color is the only thing that matters to Colin. What a disappointment!
Once again, retired Gen. Colin Powell chokes the very life out of the GOP. Let me try to explain why this recurrence shouldn't be such a big surprise: Ever spent time on a beach? Just hanging out and kinda looking around? Ever notice a crab on the beach and the way the crab tends to traverse unilaterally as opposed to going forward or backward? The CRAB should be the new icon which correctly symbolizes the GOP! They try to enter through the side door. They are forever trying to sneak around laws they don't like and change them without notice. But, they suck at it and are always being caught in the process of their mess. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan epitomize the crab approach as do many of their surrogates. Sneaking and creeping around the issues and then acting so surprised when they get caught; sometimes blaming the voting public for THEIR blunders, lol!
The GOP, Mitt and Paul, keep getting their message entangled and/or ensnared by their own previous leanings and they decry that Americans are playing the "gotcha game" with them. The sideways approach doesn't work but they keep trying it anyway. STOP IT! "We are for women's lib as long as women don't get to have any real rights. Bullsh!t rights are fine but none of this nonsense of actual equal rights, HELL NO!" Women are vessels for rape weasels to use to populate and reproduce the human species. Women need to shut the fu.ck up and be used in silence because that is why HE created them, damn it! The GOP will reverse Roe v. Wade as surely as crabs crawl sideways BUT they don't want you know that they will so shhhhh, shut up damn you!
Colin Powell is confused. He is a member of the Republican Party but he doesn't understand why he keeps voting Democratic. He hasn't figured out the "crab affect" just yet; when he does, he will leave the GOP altogether. The GOP talking points memos cannot get around all the laws that are in place to stop them from getting around the law. They WOULD steal people's right to vote IF they could just figure out how to do it; the crab affect. But every time they try, they get caught and then have to LIE even more than before AND/OR blame the whole of America for trying to entrap them.
Poor, poor, Colin Powell. The great general; those he led;
now sits in wonderment as he scratches his poor, itching head! lol
Right on...
Hello
Collin Powell, a four star General, supports Obama. Republicans claim it is because he is black, but if they had his endorsement there would be no problem. He is first and foremost a General who serves his country, under Bush you loved him. Now that he supports Obama, The Commander and Chief, all of a suden he is a raciest. Look at yourself and realise that you are the raciest. Because a black American supports Obama doesn't mean they necessarily supporting a collar.
