Obama and Romney project early voting bravado in battleground Ohio

Updated 12:56 p.m. - Each presidential campaign's bravado about who has momentum in the closing stretch of the campaign has extended to early voting, with Democrats and Republicans each claiming an advantage Thursday in the battleground state of Ohio.

President Barack Obama's campaign said early voting in counties and precincts which Obama won in 2008 is humming along at a better pace than that last election. Moreover, Obama national field director Jeremy Bird wrote, early voting in Democratic portions of Ohio is exceeding early voting in Republican corners of the Buckeye State.

Republicans countered with a memo arguing that most of the early voters touted by the Obama campaign were likely to vote Democratic anyway, thereby eating into their Election Day turnout.

"In states where Democrats have more early votes (IA, OH, NV) they are investing significant resources in turning out “high propensity voters” – those who have voted in either 3 or 4 of the past 4 general elections," a Republican National Committee memo argued Thursday.

The RNC said that there were about a million Democratic voters, of whom, about 43 percent had requested an absentee ballot or had already voted. By contrast, the RNC said there were over 1.3 million Republicans in Ohio, only about 27 percent of whom had voted early or requested an absentee ballot.

Democrats are seizing the opportunity to link Mitt Romney to Richard Mourdock's comments about rape and abortion, but Republicans are hedging their bets when it comes to Election Day, women – like everyone else – care more about the economy than anything. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., discusses.

"This means there are 380,022 more Republican high propensity voters who haven’t voted early in the electorate," the memo said. "In contrast, Democrats are diluting their ability to perform on Election Day."

Slideshow: Twin sons of different parties

Lost in the arguments are a few details, most importantly being that Ohio doesn't formally register voters by party. A "Republican" or "Democrat," for purposes of each campaign's accounting, refers to whichever primary in which an Ohioan recently voted.

"When the Romney campaign boasts that Republicans are out-performing their voter registration, they forget to tell you that Ohio doesn’t have party registration," Bird wrote. "And because Republicans had a competitive primary this year and Democrats did not, Republicans naturally have a 460,000-person edge this year among past primary voters—what Romney’s campaign is disingenuously referring to as 'registered Republicans.'"

The reality of the situation probably lies somewhere in between both campaigns' claims.

NBC's John Yang explains why voting in the crucial battleground state of Ohio may end up delaying the presidential election results.

In Ohio itself, Obama leads Romney, 60 percent to 30 percent, among those who have already voted, according to a TIME magazine poll released Wednesday.

For some voters, though, there's still some appeal to waiting on line on the day of the election itself and voting.

"I think a lot of people want to vote the day of the election. They don't want to vote early. I don't know why. I'm doing it as well. I think they like the camaraderie of it," said Kim Pedigo, a substitute teacher from Cincinnati and Romney supporter who attended the GOP nominee's rally this morning. "I like to be there at the poll. I like to see what's happening. Its fun."

Both Obama and Romney have stressed early voting in their campaign appearances, and on Thursday, Obama himself will be the first president to make an early vote in person when he travels to Chicago to cast his ballot.

Obama would qualify as the kind of "high-propensity" voter that Republicans argue Democrats have targeted in a state like Ohio, at the expense of their Election Day turnout. The Obama campaign argued earlier this week that it's doing something different: urging unlikely voters to vote early, so that it can more efficiently target the remaining low-propensity voters on Nov. 6.

These factors make it even more difficult to divine which way Ohio -- arguably the most important swing state this election, given its potential to significantly ease either Obama or Romney's path to the White House -- is trending.

NBC's Domenico Montanaro discusses President Obama's appearances last night on Nightly News with Brian Williams and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Obama senior adviser David Axelrod might have best summed up these dueling claims about the early vote in a conference call earlier this week touting the Obama campaign's own organizational prowess.

"We'll know who is bluffing and who isn't in two weeks," he said.

NBC's Garrett Haake contributed from Ohio.

When the President speaks positively about his campaign, it is labeled "bravado".

Please check out previous articles about Romney's campaign -- and see if that kind of spin was directed at Romney's fake-it-till-you make-it over-confident claims.

A Second Lieutenant in the US Army graduating from college MUST present his college transcripts before he can report for active duty. The most junior commissioned officer must show his college records, yet the Commander-in-Chief gets a pass?

Something is wrong here, America! Obama is a fraud - wake up before it's too late! If there is nothing to hide, then why won't he show us his transcripts and college applications???

Feisty -- Trump got dumped. He flopped. He was mocked by many on TWITTER. Absolutely pitiful what he's trying to do.

he Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty likened the attention Trump received to a clip from “Seinfeld,” while Chris Cillizza, also of the Post, was more straightforward.

“Me to Donald Trump: Go away. Please,” he tweeted.

Another interpretation, from Josh Greenman of the New York Daily News: “BREAKING: Donald Trump gives self an excuse to give less money to charity.”

Actor Kal Penn, who worked for a short time at the White House, had a counter-offer.

“Trump’s video was cray. But seriously, I’ll donate $50 to the charity of Gov Romney’s choice if he releases all his tax returns (Crickets),” he tweeted.

White House senior adviser David Plouffe told reporters to direct questions about Trump’s announcement “to Boston because Donald Trump is Mitt Romney’s biggest supporter, so he owns everything he says,” POLITICO reported.

"In states where Democrats have more early votes (IA, OH, NV) they are investing significant resources in turning out “high propensity voters” – those who have voted in either 3 or 4 of the past 4 general elections," a Republican National Committee memo argued Thursday.

The GOP spin on this cracks me up. It would seem to me to be smart strategy to get those who always vote in elections to vote early so you can concentrate your election day resources on getting voters to the polls who might not otherwise vote. Of course, the GOP sees things differently. To that, I hope the GOP stays the course.

Updated as of 1:30pm EST on Thursday, October 25:

Real Clear Politics (RCP) is consistently cited by both FOXNEWS and NBCNEWS as a current source for
reliable averaged polling data at every level of American politics.

RCP continues to consider the following ten states as "toss-up": Florida (FL), Pennsylvania (PA), Ohio (OH), Michigan (MI), Virginia (VA), Colorado (CO), Wisconsin (WI), Iowa IO), Nevada (NV) and New Hampshire (NH). With only 12 days left in the 2012 presidential campaign, Obama leads in seven of the toss-ups and Romney leads in three.

In descending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Obama, followed in ascending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Romney, here are the published averaged polling numbers from RCP as of 1:30pm EST on Thursday, October 25:

In PA, with 20 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 4.8%, down from a longstanding lead of 5.0%.

In MI, with 16 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 4.0%, down from 5.0% for most of the past four weeks.

In NV, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 2.7%, down from 2.8% yesterday.

In WI, with 10 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 2.7%.

In OH, with 18 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.1%, up from 1.7% yesterday.

In IO, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 2.0%, down from 2.4% yesterday.

In NH, with 4 electoral votes, Obama's lead has fallen to 0.8%, down from 1.4% yesterday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In CO, with 9 electoral votes, Romney's lead is holding at 0.2%.

In VA, with 13 electoral votes, Romney's lead is 1.4%, up from a longstanding tie.

In FL, with 29 electoral votes, Romney's lead has fallen to 1.7%, down from 1.8% yesterday.

So…

For Obama to win re-election, the easiest route still appears to be through maintaining his existing lead in the five toss-up states where his current margins are widest: PA, MI, NV, WI, and OH. Doing so would bring his electoral vote total on Election Day to 271.

However, should Obama lose the critically important and highly-contested state of OH, the loss could effectively be neutralized by combined victories in IO and NH, while stealing CO where Romney currently leads by 0.2%, resulting in an electoral vote tally of 272.

For Romney to unseat Obama, he not only would have to hold the three states in which he presently leads, FL, VA, and CO, bringing his electoral vote total to 257, but also steal a victory in OH where Obama's lead rose today to is 2.1%. By so doing, Romney's electoral vote total reaches 275.

With only twelve days of campaigning left, this one may come down to the wire…. and to the October jobs report.

Let's hope that Election Day is free of both voter fraud and voter intimidation and that eligible voters who have registered in good faith over the past six months are in fact able to vote on November 6; let's also hope that vote tabulation itself is performed honestly and accurately by both the election commissions and private corporations to whom this essential role is being entrusted.

In any case, it will be interesting to watch as election night unfolds.

I'm just curious why this administration has been telling the American people for weeks that what happened with our Libyan Consulate being attacked and Four Americans killed was do to a "Spontaneous" protest because of a Youtube video?

Whether or not you believe the latest revelations about e-mails just two hours after the attack began indicating terrorist groups tied to al Queda were behind the attacks are accurate, we have not seen one piece of evidence, one e-mail, one report, about a protest before the attacks or any mention of a video.

Where did the White House come up with that story?

Copy past the same post - on each thread.

School records are protected by a federal law passed in 1974. They are not sealed, not by him, not by his lawyers. No president has ever released them, these scatter brained conspiracies hold no water. This is as stupid as asking Mitt Romney to reveal his tax returns. Releasing his tax returns proves nothing. This is a distraction from reality.

Also, the Libyan thing is a non-issue. Its a tragedy...it happens...no sitting president is responsible for random or secretly planned acts of aggression. Its a shame we are politicizing a dedicated Americans death in the way we are. Do you blame George Bush for 9/11? If you answer is no, then you should come to the same conclusion about Obama and Bengazi. Before you say, but they covered up blah blah...NO...they have not. Intelligence reports evolve and information is processed. A Facebook comment post is not breaking news, especially when the comment is denied and rebuked by the pages owner and the organization publicly announces it had no part.

Also, watching FOX is not healthy, it is not accurate, nor is it fair and balanced. AND before you say, I don't watch FOX News, we know you do....your facts are gleaned from it...and its very much clear.

Do I watch FOX? Yes, an hour or so a day....know your enemy...or in this case...know your countries enemy.

2) Have home values gone up in the last few years?

3) Has the financial condition of Social Security and Medicare gotten better or worse?

4) Has our National Debt grown?

Friend of Gravity...

Amazing...Libya just "happens"? Obama could rob your sister and you'd look the other way...let's see...in a war Obama wanted/started (remember, no Congressional support), the Administration didn't offer up more security in this hotbed of Al Queda when requested, people died...you do know they watch video feed in the White House, right? You do know that two of the Seals held out for 6 hours when help was less than an hour away, but never sent...and, the President and his minions are out there blaming a video that had about 1,000 hits in 3 months before Obama, Clinton and Rice promoted it? I'm sure you ignored the phone call in interview from one of the dead seals at that Memorial service that BOTH Obama and Hilliary lied at that Hilliary promised they'd get the person that developed that video? But, no one in Libya has been arrensted. Amazing...

Obama is a blantant liar. Too many to even begin with...he even lied in the debate the other night and didn't know that we do have more bayonets (marines are still trained) now then we did in 1916. He lied about sequestration being just Congress, lied about Romney's position on the autobailouts, lied about his position initially wanting troops to stay in Iraq before his boy Biden couldn't negotiate it. Romney hasn't lied anything like that. Just because Obama says something about Romney, and Romney disagrees, it doesn't mean Romney is lying...

This country is in horrible condition and the Dems and Obama have been in charge for long enough. The Repubs aren't great, but this is just a joke...

Great comment, Paul, and right on. I might add that Obama also lied in the last debate when he said, about sequestration, "It will not happen". In 2011, on sequestration, he said "It's going to happen. $1 billion is already locked in". You can read it in the Des Moines Register newspaper in which he said that in an interview. Yes, he's a pathological liar on just about everything he espouses. He's now going around the country telling his gullible adoring fans that to be President you must be "trustworthy". I guess he considers himself trustworthy - and do snakes have armpits?

At the risk of sounding naive, why does it matter what the cause of the Libya attack was?

Spontaneous protest that got out of control or coordinated terrorist effort, what exactly is the difference? Unlike many conservative posters, I understand the need for caution when reporting a tragedy of this magnitude to the American public and how intelligence can evolve in the days following an incident.

Why, exactly, would the current administration lie about the nature of the attack and try to paint it as something it wasn't? What's to be gained there? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Regardless of the origin/perpetrators of the attack, our citizens are just as dead. What are conservatives trying to say? That our president was responsible for the attack? That he somehow knew it was coming and decided to do nothing about it? Doubtful. Why all the hair-splitting on the right?

Seems like a non-issue at this point.

@Tellya what

Short answer, It doesn't matter...Conservative are just desperate and to stupid to realize that most Americans don't care if they are being lied to by the President that represents their Party (R or D)

So what, He knew what the truth was, and intentionally has his administration lie to the American People and the World, so that there wouldn't be any questions regarding his foreign policy...Politics and re-election is way more important, than any of the qualities that we claim to want in our President

I think the President made it very clear that the 'reasons' these guys killed our guys in Libya doesn't matter at all to the bottom line: it was an act of terror, and those responsible must be brought to justice. This is precisely what he said the next day, underscored by moving two military ships to the Libyan coast with those terrorist-killing tomahawk missiles. He was obviously on top of the game with his response to losing four of his own, and not about to wait around for an investigation on non-essential issues before he acted in response.

How much of a role the youtube video played was and is still very much in question. It brought lots of people to the street in protest across the middle East, and the big unanswered question is whether those who attacked us in Libya used those protests as cover, or whether they had planned to attack in Libya that day no matter what. If it was the former, then the distinction republicans have made between 'preplanned attack' and 'spontaneous attack' falls apart. This is because it very well could have been a preplanned attack waiting for a spontaneous opportunity to be called into action.

The bottom line is that Obama went hard and fast into the region, guns drawn, to hunt down the people who did this, while Romney went hard and fast to the media to attack our ambassadors and our President. You decide who took the wiser path.

tellya what I guess you think who cares what happened in Libya. The fact is that there are 4 American families hurting to find the truth. but on the other hand if this happen while Bush was in office I would probably think you would be the first to say Impeach bush from office for lying. so there you have a double standard. Liberal President has a pass to do anything they want without getting in trouble while Conservative President one thing wrong and the Media won't stop until he's impeached.

how do we know which side of the fence he will be on if he is elected?

Apparently the Obama administration does not want to give people more time to hear new information about the terrorist attack in Libya or to study the President's economic plan for the next four years. I went on the Obama campaign sight and read what they provided of the plan. The plan is devoid of detail and just like the president, there is no sense of budget. The President expects that ending the wars overseas is going to result in a savings of more than 2 trillion dollars per year which is impossible. For education, among other things, the President wants to do the following:

Pull funding from colleges that cannot or will not offer students a good value and an affordable price.

For example in my state, because of state budgetary problems, the state has had to decrease the money it is giving to support state colleges and universities. So to makes ends meet the affected schools have had to raise tuition and fees. Under Obama's plan the federal government will help out by reducing any federal funding which would force these schools to either increase tuition and fees even more or in some way save money by reducing pay, personnel, or closing down facilities.

The President's economic plan. "makes no sense".

Did anyone really expect Colin Powell to endorse a draft dodging coward like Romney? Did anyone really expect the former Secretary of State to endorse a man who does not know that the Strait of Hormus has an Iranian shore, as well as the Persian Gulf the Arabian Sea not to mention the Caspian Sea. Did anyone believe that a decorated war hero would endorse a man who thinks the 1916 Navy is superior because it had more ships than the current Navy? Does anyone who saw the debate, think that the Westpointer would endorse a man who appears to be delusional, who has been consistent almost schizophrenic in contradicting his own positions, even the 47% comment that was made with his kind in the room. Maybe Ann is correct, the strain is too much for his feeble mind.

I would still like to know what the Romney/Ryan plan is for education concerning college funding and tax credits for parents with kids in college. I have been asking and paying close attention to this and, so far, the information has changed four times.

Before first debate, they were cutting Pell Grants.

During first debate, they were not cutting education.

Before second debate, they were cutting tax deductions for college students.

Then, in the last debate something sketchy was said about vouchers and people choosing their own tax deductions.

    Huh?

Why not just be clear about it?

President Obama doubled the amount of Pell Grant money for four year college students.

President Obama allowed a tax deduction every year for parents who had students in college.

    Simple and clear to understand.

EVEN THE MORMONS ARE VOTING FOR OBAMA. THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE CALLED MITT ROMNEY A SHAPE SHIFTER.

I am pasting a post from Sandy Radcliffe who, I think, did an excellent job of reporting. See Sandy’s writing below:-

“Tagg Romney's Company Misled Reporters About Its Relationship With Ponzi
    Scheme–Linked Firm Lee Fang on October 12, 2012 - 8:10 PM ET

The private equity firm run by Tagg Romney—Mitt’s eldest son, misled reporters
last year about its involvement with a company run by men accused of taking
part in a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.

Last year, I reported that Tagg had formed a business partnership with several
North Carolina investors who are still facing a lawsuit for receiving bonus pay
for selling CDs as part of the $8 billion Stanford Financial Group Ponzi
    scheme.

In a nutshell, Tagg helped these investors form a company—called Solamere
Advisors, a nod to Tagg’s firm Solamere Capital—shortly after their boss, Allen
Stanford, was caught by law enforcement for his elaborate Ponzi fraud.

When I interviewed him in Las Vegas, Tagg told me that his associates were
“cleared” of any wrongdoing associated with the Stanford Ponzi scheme. Court
documents directly contradict Tagg and show that the lawsuit has not been
    dismissed.

The New York Times followed up on my story with its own report and confirmed
that Tagg’s business partners received incentive pay for selling bunk Stanford
CDs. They wrote about one Stanford victim, a local Charlotte businessman and
philanthropist named Herman Stone. Stone was pressured by Brandon Phillips, an
executive working now for Tagg’s firm, into putting $2 million into a
fraudulent Stanford CD and lost everything.

Solamere Capital attempted to distance itself from the story by claiming that
their business was not actually connected to the Ponzi-tainted firm, Solamere
Advisors. In a statement to ABC News, they claimed that their managers, not
Solamere Capital itself, were involved (emphasis added):

“It is inaccurate to suggest that Solamere Capital made an investment in this
firm [Solamere Advisors]. Solamere Capital was approached to invest in a new
wealth management firm being launched by these three individuals. After
extensive due diligence, Solamere Capital decided not to invest because the
business was at an early stage and did not meet our investment criteria.
However, Spencer Zwick, Tagg Romney and Eric Scheuermann each own a minority
stake in the business as individual investors.”

However, Solamere Capital’s statement, provided to ABC News, is false.
Disclosures from the Securities and Exchange Commission show that Tagg’s
company indeed maintains ties with the Ponzi-linked firm, Solamere Advisors.

The claim that Solamere Group didn’t invest directly in Solamere Advisors, the
firm employing former Stanford employees, appears to have been an attempt to
shield Mitt Romney. Mitt invested about $10 million into Tagg’s Solamere
Capital venture, which would suggest Mitt has a direct financial relationship
with folks involved in a Ponzi scheme. That’s because Solamere Capital pools
together investment money to co-invest in other companies

Is there anything this Dirt Bag won't do? So the Caymen Island Accounts are not
just his, he is also helping his kid to rip off people.”

Remember the quote from Newt Gingrich about Romney? “How can you debate
    someone who lies about everything?”...more

    • Under Gov. Romney, Massachusetts fell to 47th
out of 50 in job creation:

Before Romney’s time as governor, Massachusetts ranked 36th out of 50 in job

creation, but over the course of his tenure the state ranked a dismal 47th out

of 50—even as the national economy was growing. The Bay State only beat Michigan,

Ohio, and Louisiana—which was still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Gov. Romney created or raised over 1,000 taxes and fees:

Though he promised he wouldn’t raise taxes as governor, he increased taxes and

fees by as much as $750 million per year, leaving the average taxpayer to pay
an extra $1,227 in state and local fees and taxes. During his first year in office, Romney

raised fees on milk, driver’s licenses, hospitals, nursing and barber licenses, and even on the blind.

Gov. Romney left behind a huge budget deficit:

Romney broke his pledge to balance the budget and left his successor, Gov.

Deval Patrick, with a $1 billion budget deficit. Long-term debt increased by

16% over Romney’s four-year term, and he left Massachusetts with the highest
debt per person in the nation.

I would NEVER vote for Rob-Me; after one term as Massachusetts Governor, the People of the State of Massachusetts decided the same thing, INCLUDING REPUBLICANS!!!! END OF QUOTE.

VOTE FOR OBAMA AND AVOID ANOTHER EXPENSIVE REPUBLICAN WAR AND A GREATER DEFICIT!

Gregorio: I'm sure those families will be the first to hear the conclusions of the current investigation on what happened in Libya. I'm also sure they are gratified to know that the President is not waiting around for those results before taking action. I think this president and his military staff have only two pressing questions with regard to their response to the attack: who did it, and where are they now?

My guess is that the guys who did this are in deep cover right now, afraid to go outside. When you are being hunted by the US, all it takes is to be seen by the wrong person, and the next thing that happens is a missile comes through the ceiling. Especially in Libya, where we have lots of local 'friendlies', these guys have to know their lives are hanging by a thread, especially considering Obama's record on taking out terrorists in the region.

I love the wild assumptions you make about 'knowing' what dems would think if Bush were in the oval office. Have fun with those.

I'm not sure why Mitt Romney has been changing his position back and forth on different policies the last year, but it makes me nervous.

And it worries me about the last debate when Romney was suddenly agreeing with all the President's current foreign policies after taking an almost war-like stance about the Middle East and foreign policy for the past year. Now, he's Mr. Congeniality and all for World Peace. So which is it? Why the change all of a sudden?

I know Mr. Romney's five sons will never go to war, but I have two sons who could be eligible.

Like Dr. Phil says, "the best indication of future behavior is past behavior." And the GOP has always had two loves: MONEY and WAR. I don't think that has changed.

And now he's playing with words in an effort that almost looks like brainwashing to get votes in Ohio.

What should a voter believe? How do we know what he would do if he were in office?

I used to think if Mitt Romney won, it would not be the end of the world, but now I am not so sure ...

    Very scary.

    Joan:

    1) Are more people working today than 4 years ago?

Yes, we have a net gain of 125K jobs over the past four years. We lost 4.3 million between 2008 and early 2010 but have added about 4.4 million since then.

    2) Have home values gone up in the last few years?

    Yep they have.

    3) Has the financial condition of Social Security and Medicare gotten better or worse?

Short term (over the next two decades) yes, beyond that not yet.

    4) Has our National Debt grown?

Yes it has but look at why it has. Federal spending increased at its lowest pace since the past several decades. Most of the debt is being generated from war spending that was never paid for with increased taxes and also from tax cuts made during war time and that never say reciprocal spending cuts for during the Bush and Obama admin.

    5) Is America more respected or less respected?

More than during Bush's FP debacle.

    6) Does the future for our children and grandchildren look better or worse?

Depends on who you ask and what you are measuring by. If your kid is a geek then yes because tech jobs are going to become the norm in the future. If you kid is going into manufacturing not so much because eventually robots will be working assembly lines entirely so someone new getting into a manufacturing career may have a hard time finding a job in ten to twenty years.

However, overall, the answer is yes.

    @Magic,

Umm House Republicans were not asking for more security. In fact they were the ones cutting the State Department budget for embassy security since 2010.

UNH used 2008 +3 Democrats Republicans +1. Reduced to 2008 numbers Obama +7. Republicans activity is +5 against 2008. Democrats appear to be the same. Add subtract 5 from the Obama +7 and Obama is up +2 in New Hampshire (effect of change in independents not figured).

Here's an interesting California Poll by PPIC. This usually is a decent poll.

Obama 53, Romney 41. Obama +12. 2008 turnout appears to be the basis with +3 on Democrats and +2 in Republicans. If 2004 was the basis, Obama would be only +5. Last month this polling organization showed Obama +14.

Bain Capital caused the loss of thousands of jobs in Ohio but Romney needs the votes of blue collar workers and, though Romney has a slight majority with Catholics nationwide, he doesn't have the majority he needs in Ohio.

Boromir - Too many women choose to abort their baby because the child will interfere with their lifestyle. That's the decision they make and have to live with. Unfortunately, there are those who make that decision too often. Let them use contraceptives. It costs only $9/month, will not break the bank, and an innocent baby does not have to suffer because of a woman's selfishness. Those who do use one of the many contraceptives that are out there are intelligent women. In cases of rape and incest, well that's a different matter and the victim will make her own choice. Just remember - the innocent baby is also the victim in all cases.

Melvin Sembler, a Florida State Co-Chair for Mitt Romney’s finance committee ran a chain of teen drug "rehab" clinics (Straight, Inc) that had a track record of extreme abuse. This abuse included kids being thrown against walls, held against their will, kidnapped, restrained in leg irons, forced into servitude, and raped."

In one of many stories from Straight that have been exposed, a teenage girl testified to being compelled into the program after being caught with an airline bottle of liquor given to her by a friend, and then beaten, raped, locked in a janitor’s closet in pants soiled by urine, feces, and menstrual blood. This punishment was called "Humble Pants"

Kevin -- I hadn't heard of that before, so I googled it, and scanned through a few articles. You appear to be correct. This Melvin Sembler guy, he seems to be most motivated by an irrational fear of marijuana decriminalization.

And why is it that rape keeps getting associated with Republicans, especially as this election comes down to the wire?

If I thought of myself as a very religious guy who believed that everything was "God's will", I would say that God is trying to send the women of this country a message to vote against all republicans. And since when is smoking a joint worse than getting raped? Jesus!

Women have the right to choose, period! It's their body and they will live with the consequences of their decisions thereof. Government has no say whatsoever of what a woman can or cannot do, got it. This election is critical to my point. If Romney gets in, he WILL sign legislation to end ALL abortions. And I mean all of them. He will sign legislation to end birth control provided by her employers health care plan. Read what I'm saying here, this man Romney IS NOT what you want in the White House folks, he will give change in a way that will destroy the freedoms of women all across this country. We don't need the far right's view on what women can or can't do with their own bodies, that' their decision wheither you and I like it or not.

Wow, you guys are nuts. Roe v. Wade allowed abortoins to be legal in every state...it was a state issue before...so, if Roe v Wade is overturned, the legislation moves to the state level and with CA, OR, WA, NY and MA, the ability to kill an unborn child will always be just a short plane ride away...don't worry...

But, you don't like the idea of a bunch of DC bureaucrats dictating what you can do with your body, I assume you are against Obamacare then? I mean there is legislation in that bill where 15 unelected bureaucrats will dictate which procedures are payable by Medicare...so, you don't want them to tell you you can't have an abortion, but you are OK with them telling you you can't have a hip replacement or an experimental drug for cancer? Nice...and stupid...

BTW, starting next year, as part of Medicare, if you are require readmission for any treatment that was covered by Medicare, you better not need treatment for 30 days, b/c your hospital won't get paid...yup, Obamacare rule...so, you know what, you won't get treatment...but, you'll be able to go get an abortion anytime you want...nice...liberal logic...

I've said before, in my heart I am pro-life, as a American I have to be pro-choice. I believe life begins at conception, and I don't believe a unborn child is a lost soul. I believe the soul is the first essence of a human being, the only thing that ignites life into a living being. So when a child is unborn their soul is returned as a pure soul with out sin. They never have to suffer the pain of life by being born into a life of sin. I love life... my heart goes out to anyone that has to make a choice. I understand human nature, no law can be passed that human nature will not break. People should look at themselves and others as being the most precious resource on the planet. Not to be used or abused by anyone or anything. Learn to look into the eyes of any living being, you will see a child..again, remember human nature, compassionate, understanding, reasonable, are some of our better qualities, but we seems to be selective of how we apply them. Life is good, live it.. find ways to love it.

That so many people are willing to vote for someone that changes their opinion at the drop of a hat (or chance of getting one more vote) doesn't say much about thepeople in the United States. Someone that is so far to the right and want to get a larger percent of the money to the rich is very scary. Women, minorities, and any one from the middle class down will really suffer if the republicans get in full power. I don't think the rich will get more money in the long run, just a larger percent of the money. Their polices will lead us down to the level thatHoover's took us or maybe even furtherr. I still cannot imagine that the American people are that dumb but apparently they are. The reason we haven't come out of the recession sooner is because the do nothing party (repugs) decided Obama was going to be a one term president and even said so. How crappy can you get?

Democrats lets show them that they cannot buy the election, lets vote all of the teabaggers out and re-elect President Obama, There are more of us, we just need to get all of us out to vote. If you can vote early in case something happens that you can't vote on election day.

Just remember - the innocent baby is also the victim in all cases.

every women have the right to do with their body what ever they want. you could jump off the empire state building that your choice. The problem here is that women want to have fun in bed and not be responsible for the consequence. They get pregnant and want the government to pay for her abortion. i believe that government should pay for abortion only in case of rape or incest or any emergency condition.

Except for instances of rape or incest, I believe the vast majority of people do not favor abortion. The psychological and resulting physical problems via the psychological stress obviously aren't good for any woman or girl that goes through one. That being said, I personally believe it is a womans right to choose what they do with their own body. Regardless of what stage the pregnancy is in, I still believe they have the right to end the pregnancy. Wouldn't recommend it in most cases, but it's their body.

                The true Romney:

In 1994 when running for the Senate he sends a letter to a Gay group saying "We must work to make sure that our Gay and Lesbian citizens have fully equal rights". Then in 2007 he was asked by the Boston Globe about the letter, after he had come out against Gay rights. And he said,"well you HAVE TO REALIZE WHO I WAS WRITING TOO". HUH!!! WHAT!!!

A man who depending on who he's talking to at any time, will lie to you. Can't be trusted to be elected President of our country.

A national disgrace is candidate who ships american jobs overseas and keeps his money in offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes. As far as warnings and deaths where were you when there turned out to be no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq! Who lied and how many died, thousands.

That is NOT what the article states! If you had made the effort to read the article for yourself, you would KNOW what he said!

"Thought about lowering the voting age?" Bates joked.

"You know, kids have good instincts," Obama offered. "They look at the other guy and say, 'Well, that's a bull@!$%#ter, I can tell.'"

He was responding in a banter with the ADULT executive editor -- after the interview was over and Rolling Stone was leaving the Oval Office. BTW: just how many six year olds read Rolling Stone Magazine? That you can document?

There is a simple compromise on the issue of abortion. Democrats may be aborted at any stage of development for any reason before or after birth. Republicans may apply medical, ethical and moral qualifications. Each group pays for their own choices. There you have it, problem solved.

So, here we have another shining example of Republican factual intelligence.

Bill, did you know that Carter's domestic policy was centered around trying to develop new energy sources that could get us out from under the Arab trap? DIdn't think so.

The alternative energy industry of America was the fastest growing part of our industrial base as Reagan came into office. Remember Reagan, the guy who told you he stood for free enterprise? What Reagan really did was to crush the newly rising industry with adding huge tax breaks to the petroleum industry and cutting funding in important, alternative research. So now we are all trying to figure out (32 years later) how to get out from under the Arab oil trap.

One of the biggest lies ever foisted on the ignorant American voter was by Reagan as he set out to destroy the middle class. Read a little about who Carter is and what Carter was proposing for our future. If you do, you will most likely want to take back your slurs.

Being called 'like Carter' by the right wing fanatics is a badge of honor in the eyes of the educated, intelligent folks of America, you just don't know that. Of course, you do have to buy into the value of intelligence and education, the last thing the Republican National Committee would ever want you to do.

Ninja - Carter never achieved a balanced budget. [See the Cato Institute Policy Analysis No. 24.] We know Obama hasn't - he's had one budget in 4 years which is disgraceful. So that leaves Clinton, right? Well, Clinton didn't balance the budget either, as the President cannot "balance the budget." His budget was balanced by the REPUBLICAN controlled Congress. It may interest you to know that our current economic problems started during Clinton's years when Fannie and Freddie issued epic amounts of mortgage-backed debt. [Check it out at Business Insider - if you dare.]

The first one will be that 53% of the American people conspired to keep our rich kid out of the White House. Or. an overwhelming number of Electoral College attendees conspired to keep the top 1% from stealing more money.

                    The story line will be:

'The American people just could not understand our simple strategy. It was only two things.

One - we wanted your vote, and

Two - we wanted your money.

Obama and his deception team kept confusing things by bringing up our support of rape, our simple demand that women work for less and carry any baby that was put in their bodies by God to term, our right to have offshore bank accounts to keep from paying taxes, our disdain for half of the American people, our offshore Chinese companies doing business with Iran, our lies....

They were unfair because, obviously, we lost. Why couldn't people see what Obama was doing?'

I think we should re-elect him so that all these people get exactly what they deserve with another four years of him in office. The only thing is my family has to suffer by doing so. People are blind or just plain idiots to even think this president has done half of a decent job in the last four years. First two years he had a full democratic senate/house and did nothing but pass the highest tax on all of us through Obamacare. Oh he did put more people on food stamps and out of work and created no jobs.... He also doubled the deficit. He has accomplished so many things. Then people say, "Well he got Bin Landen" which were tasks carried out by the military. Whenever we were attacked on 9/11, people more than likely wanted to see revenge and us go after the bad guys. A year or two later, they expected things to be back to normal and complained about "We went to war this. We want to war that." Just like Obama "will bring our troops home" if he is re-elected even though that process was started and had an end date before he even got put into office by the baboons that voted him in for the first four years.

What Are Republican Voters Asking For?

                    • To put insurance companies back in control of their health care, not their doctors.
                    • To lose their insurance claims in the small print.
                    • For the government to force any wives and daughters to give birth to a rapists act of violence
                    • To make Social Security payments into the system for current retirees and not get them back
                    • To give a 14% gratuity to the insurance industry for every Medicare claim.
                    • To reopen the door to Medicare fraud and abuse
                    • To increase military spending by two trillion dollars over demand (debt or taxes to be determined)
                    • To deny 30 million Americans access to health care insurance, but pay uncontrolled insurance premiums
                    • To go to war as soon as possible with Iran and other nations to be determined
                    • To return to the cold war by launching one against Russia
                    • To return to Bush tax and spend more borrowed money practices
                    • To take away worker’s rights in dealing with employers, thus sending wages and benefits to historic lows
                    • To pay extra taxes for the sake of the richest Americans
                    • To continue and increase the transition of manufacturing to Asia or accept hourly pay of less than 10% of current amounts
                    • To have their elected representatives represent corporations and wealthy donors instead
                    • To give in to smear and racism
                    • To release Wall Street from any accountability to investors or the economy
                    • To get rid of consumer protection in finances, environmental control, food and product safety and liability, fuel standards, public safety, drug safety and efficacy, control of monopolistic price exploitation, etc.
                    • To ensure there is a white man in the White House, based on prejudice, smear, and outright racist hate
                    • To put industry and business in charge of legislation and enforcement, instead of the people of the nation

THIS IS BUT A SHORT LIST OF THE THINGS REPUBLICANS ARE VOTING FOR.

You are basically giving the opposite racist remarks there saying that a white man is expected to be in office. I don't care what the race of the person is as long as they do a decent job. Bill,

Your comment means that if we were not so dumb, we would not admit it!?!

We are not 'too dumb to not admit it,' we are too smart to admit what is not true.

Obama got elected because he was clearly the better candidate for the job and has done a great job given what he has been up against, in spite of the blatant racism and lies from the fanatical right wing. No matter how many times or how loud you fools tell the lie, Obama has kept us out of new wars and brought the economy back from the brink of disaster. Nobody believes a Republican would have been able to do that. Sorry for your delusional thinking.

It is clear that your thinking organ needs a tune up. My advice: Start by throwing away all the strings from your past and getting a whole new set.

God, I hope folks in other countries do not read some of the posts on these vines. We got such a bad press when Dubbie was in office, I don't think we can stand much more of this stupidity and still be considered a country worth taking seriously.

LIke the rest of the nation, I was taken aback by the unique road that Obama used to get elected. My first concern....... was the Roman columns in Denver; ......I then heard about the "oceans rising up" and my common sense said "if this keeps up this dude is not going to work out".

But what I NEVER....NEVER saw coming was the arrogance, the "Pimp with a Limp", the nod to the Black Panther voter suppression, the FOOD STAMP explosion, the unbearable rates of unemployment, the "Pass ObamaCare to see what's in it"....folks, he had his shot, and he failed .......MISERABLY

I was undecided in this election...I thought voting for Obama meant voting for the Democratic party of the Kennedy's and other proggressives who saw things that needed to be repaired and tried to fix them. But I'm aware and disturbed that the president I saw in the debates, all of them, is exhibiting the rage that's causing the catastophic divide going on in this country and why nothing is getting done.. he's a very angry man, threatening, menacing even, with an Agenda he seems determined to see through at all costs. He spends so much time critisizing Romney he never says anything worthwhile about what changes he's going to need to make to "his policies" that are not working...that's not leadership. I'm old. I've lived through a lot including a few recessions that were as devastating as this one, (surprised? because that's not what they say on the evening news? don't believe most of what you hear) but that our economy recovered from much sooner because the normal cycles were allowed to happen. Obamas ego is interferring with our economic recovery, I now see it, and children in America are hungry because of him. Good people who give back are being called "evil" for working hard and achieving success and donating to worthy causes. What's this man done to us? Everything we've been as the most generous country in the history of the world is being changed...I have to believe if anyone knew that this was what he meant by change, they like I would never have voted for him. It's OK to disagree about politics...but what that means after 4 years of ObamaRage is that we're sinking fast.

Affinity - I hope you have facts to back up all that bull because that's all it is is bull. You're just another brainwashed, brain dead, left wingnut Liberal who doesn't know your a** from your elbow. You're going to vote for a Communist, pathological liar again and put this nation in a worse mess than what he's put us in so far. He has us on the path to a North American Union and you people just don't seem to get it. You're nothing but walking zombies, led by your smooth talking dictator and the slime stream liberal media. Before you spout off again about what Republicans are voting for you'd better be able to list the facts. You do know what a "fact" is, don't you? If you say you don't know that won't surprise me.

As sick as I am of this election, it needs more time for the truth to come out on Libya. Do not waste your vote by voting early! More information is forthcoming every day. Do your own research, learn the facts, and hten make a decision on election day.

There is no story to tell on Libya, from all I read and seen terrorists attacked our embassy killing four real patriotic Americans. The president called it an "act of terror" the very next day and vowed to bring the people responsible to justice. You are hung up on the fact that people were protesting a video the same day in other countries and there was some confusion and talk of it, there is no there, there. Get over it. Why don't you head up an investigation into the missing weapons of mass destruction in Iraq where thousands of Americans and Iraqis died over a real BIG lie.

As important and sad and unfortunate the Libya situation is and has become I will not hold my vote on this one issue. There are huge issues at stack here that I don't trust the Republicans on. Our fiscal issues and the solutions to those issues must consist of cuts AND tax increases as most economists agree. Funding to education must continue...investments in technology and inovation (i.e. green technology) must continue despite some of the failures...and civil rights protected.

Anthony, you have lied about the quote in your post at #23.1.

Obama made a vague, general reference to "acts of terror" without specifically naming the Benghazi attacks as an "act of terror". Besides, if he did that as you claim, why would he then run around for about 2 weeks afterwards blaming it on a "spontaneous demonstration" related to Muslim outrage over a 17 minute, anti-Mohammed film clip ? That would prove Obama to have lied, along with Susan Rice and various other menbers of his administatration LYING about causality ... when Obama called it an "act of terror" as you have claimed.

Did Obama lie on 9/12/12 or died he lie repeatedly in the two weeks following that tragedy ?

Anthony.....nothing to talk about ?....this coverup goes right into the Situation Room (not that you would have any idea what that is about)...your boy Obama is in it right up to his skinny neck, and these people would still be alive if Obama had attended one security briefing. He is a national disgrace.

The terrorists are having a field day with Obama telling jokes and they laughing at the country.Four citizens murdered whilst serving their country and the Sec of State , and Ambassador lying to cover the Pres. and VP. 16 Trillion in debt and increasing daily at 4B. Enough is enough, we have a most capable person, a man of high morales and intelligence, and a true statesman named Romney, give him an opportunity. Away with incompetence, welcome Mitt TO THE WH.

Didn't you just love it when clueless Mitt Romney immediately called a press conference to criticize the president without understanding the facts of the Benghazi attack. He was an opportunist just waiting to politicize the incidence with no regard to sensitivity or feelings of the family of those who died. Romney was even excoriated for using the the ambassador's death to benefit himself politically. Romney character as a Bain vulture capitalist rears its ugly head in everything he does. He is callous, ruthless, condescending, snooty, and outright dissembling. If we are going to talk about Americans killed by terrorists, remember that 3000+ died on 9/11 and thousands more died or were wounded when King George decided to invade another country that has nothing to do with 9/11

More news coming out about Benghazi - Oval Office probably new real time what was having. Charlie Woods (father of killed Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods) is starting to speak out now, calling US leaders who denied requests for help "murderers".

Interesting that Romney stayed away from this topic during last debate -- rather than politicize it, he just let the truth play out its due course.

Obama knew, Hillary knew, Panetta knew ... probably more to come

"In Ohio itself, Obama leads Romney, 60 percent to 30 percent, among those who have already voted, according to a TIME magazine poll released Wednesday." I know the horse-race narrative requires the media to say that both campaigns are a little bit right and a little bit wrong in their claims. But it takes a little more spinning than normal to make those numbers look anything but good for President Obama.

This may come as a shock . Your vote counts whether you vote Tomorrow or Nov 6th.

The only advantage is for the voter because it makes it easier and more convenient to vote. I'll be voting tomorrow on my way home from work.
