Romney boasts record fundraising in first half of October

CINCINNATI, OH -- Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign announced on Thursday that its Victory fund had hauled in a record $111.8 million dollars in the first two weeks of October.

Brian Snyder / Reuters

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, accompanied by Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) (C), picks up food at First Watch cafe in Cincinnati, Ohio October 25.

The Republican victory effort had amassed a $169 million warchest for its final push to Election Day, the Romney campaign said. Its record fundraising was tabulated through Oct. 17, which includes the first two presidential debates.

The Romney Victory fund, a joint fundraising venture by the Romney campaign, the Republican National Committee and four state Republican parties allied with the Romney camp, raised $170 million for the GOP contender in September. October's haul is on pace to far surpass that number.

Thursday's Deep Dive featured a look at Ohio's key counties and their election histories in 2004 and 2008. Which way will they vote this year? The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.

“Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are offering a vision for the country that will finally bring a real recovery to the American people. Their plan will bring much needed change after the last four years and it is why we have seen such momentum and strong support from our donors," Romney national finance chairman Spencer Zwick said in a statement accompanying the release.

With less than two weeks remaining in the fall campaign, today's release could be intended in part to continue to project momentum and strength for the Romney campaign, themes the candidate has sought to emphasize at each appearance on the campaign trail.

"There's no question about it. We're seeing more and more enthusiasm, more and more support," Romney said on Tuesday in Nevada. "We're going to make sure that these campaigns and the message of these debates, rather, these messages, keep going across the country."

Slideshow: Twin sons of different parties

Much of the $169 million the Romney team had on hand as of last week is earmarked for fueling that message with both ad spending and get-out-the-vote efforts increasing in intensity.

Earlier this week, a Romney adviser said the campaign has inquired about air time for a possible 30-minute infomercial to air in swing states, and the money could also be used to broaden Romney's electoral map. Pennsylvania, with its expensive media markets, could become a target for the Romney campaign, which has flirted with the state but not yet fully engaged, including not running TV ads.

There's also no sign that the money well will dry up for Romney any time soon. Tonight in Dallas the campaign will hold a fundraiser headlined by former Vice President Dick Cheney, and Romney's son Josh and featuring a video appearance from Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan, that organizers say is expected to raise more than two million dollars.

Did Ann have Cadillacs before or after Romney started campaigning?

If so such a purchase can be seen as misappropriation of campaign funds.

You know that she has to have the best.

75k for a new Escalade.

$75,000.

That money could have gone towards creating three new jobs at $25,000 a piece a year for one year.

But you know how Romney and Ryan are. Take you money and run to the nearest Caddy dealership.

While Americans go without jobs Ann gets to play and Romney continues to flaunt his expertise as a CEO.

Such a purchase might have gone unnoticed when he was CEO but as presidential candidate....we will see more of the lavish spending on himself if he is elected while everyone else wonders when their handout is going to be sent to them for supporting Romney.

dwighthuth,

You must be quite hungry after vomiting up that huge pile of verbal garbage. Is that all you have? Bull@!$%#? Pathetic. Can't you contribute to the conversation like a big boy, or are you going to continuespewing partisan rhetoric? Obama raised a huge amount of money that could've saved several hundred children's lives in a third world country. Instead, he chose to usethe money for his campaign and let those children die. See how stupid that sounds? You also realize that Obama is using tax payer money to fly Air Force One around on his campaign instead of using his own money, right? Is that illegal? Is it unethical? Is the President using donations to pay for green fees when he goes golfing or when he and his family take vacations? Grow up. No wonder so many people are sick of all the bull@!$%# with this campaign. Both sides are full of it and they are both saying that the other is simply more so.

    Dwight,

$25K a year for a job?? You on the left would be the first to bitch up a storm if a Republican were to add a $25k/yr job. So get your story straight...Chef is right...for all the millions that Obama minions have raised, how come they couldn't donate a $1MM to save the children. In fact, Romney gives more to charity every year than Obama does so while he may be able to afford an Escalade, he certainly gives more to those in need than Obama has done (yes, including his time as a community organizer...).

      #2.8 - Thu Oct 25, 2012 10:08 PM EDT

I wouldn't be surprise if Romney donates more to charity in year than Obama will in his lifetime. The only thing that may make that wrong is I believe he did donate a good bit o the Nobel Peace Prize money to some charities.

Well, some of that money is my contribution. . .

It's funny- this time around, I don't know ANYBODY who is voting for Obama- not in New Jersey, and not in Florida, either. Many of them did vote for Obama in '08, but, as they say, the thrill is gone.

All the lies he's telling on the campaign trail are not helping. In fact, I'm pretty certain those lies- about Romney's stance on letting Detroit go bankrupt, (NY Times never had so much traffic), and what led to the Benghazi attacks are directly responsible for the disappearing gender gap.

Throw in the childish, petulant name calling, and the Romney lead grows daily.

        Aloha, Obama. It's been real.

Of course Romney is going to win, and long before election day even Obama is going to have to face that reality. All the momentum is in Romney's favor as he has run a campaign of ideas, vision, and a better tomorrow. Obama has run a campaign of insults and character assassination that is certainly not resonating with voters. This will not end up being a close race, and Romney is more then likely to top the 330 mark in electoral votes. Obama spent four years assigning blame and making excuses. Obama interviews were questions about his favorite color or what super power he would like to have. Liberals and the mainstream media coddled Obama, they covered for his failings, and they never held him accountable. Obama was allowed to fail. The public is no longer buying into the claim that this time around Obama will get it right, especially when he isn't even running a campaign on his record. One and done is pretty embarrassing for any president, it will be even harder for Obama being the first African American to sit in the Oval Office.

And why should Romney go on the all the late night talk shows like Obama is doing? It's obvious that Hollywood is a liberal town and is negative against Romney, so why bother with talk show hosts when that time could be better spent with real voters that will actually pay attention to the issues we face. Obama seems happy to laugh it up with the Hollyweird elite...it's a wonder how he has time to do his job.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Mitt Romney attracting support from 50% of voters nationwide, while President Obama earns the vote from 47%. Two percent (2%) prefers some other candidate, and two percent (2%) are undecided. See daily tracking history.

These updates are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. As a result, approximately one-third of the interviews for today's update were completed before the end of Monday night's presidential debate. Tomorrow morning (Friday) will be the first update based entirely upon interviews conducted after the final debate.

Heading into the first presidential debate, Obama was up two. Heading into the final debate, Romney had a two-point advantage

I wouldn't give Romney a dime if he needed to make a phone call. He is the most worthless candidate for President since the 1960's I know because I have been around that long. Also I SERVED in Viet Nam, Romney SWERVED from serving in Viet Nam. He is nothing but a coward, he wants to send our military men and women to war, but was a coward himself when it was time for him to serve. He is not worthy of being our President. Vote all repugs and teabags out of political office they are poison for our country.

Um, excuse me gus, but are you familiar with the douche bag who's never even held a real job let alone served in the military (He'd probably go to jail first) who is the default CIC and surged our troop numbers in Afghanistan?

I think I'd be willing you "douche bag" a chance for not serving when it was not that critical. I think the previous poster was referring to the guy running away on a critical time when any young man should've responded to the draft because there was going on. Now, if you fault Obama for not going to Desert Storm or Iraqi Freedom missions (sarcasm here!) I could understand.

How easily you forget your skirt-chasing president who ran off to England during the Vietnam war and famously said..."I didn't inhale..." I would take a hard working executive over a community organzier any day of the week. Add to that, you have some senile VP that can't remember which day of the week being the second in command of our nukes. No thanks...

Hahaha, does this reek desperation to change news? Ooooooh, I think someone wants to change the trajectory of the race! I thought they had momentum? It looks like it may be going the other way perhaps? The bluff may have worn thin by now! On another note, please Chuck, we love you more when you call it as you see...right in the middle! I don't know what happened but I had a feeling Chuck Todd had fallen off the cliff the last couple weeks. It's not that he would give bad news about the Democrats...it's just that he'd appeared to want to report only negativity on the Obama side. If you had a problem with the campaign (speculating here of course) that's fine...but we have too much respect for ya. See it in you in getting back to report it as you see it.

Angry racist conservative: Difference between Obama and Romney as far as not serving in the military, is back when Romney was suspose to serve, his dad bought his way out of serving, and back then their was a draft. Obama, there was no draft when he was elegible.

Exactly what is racist?? Stop listening to mind-numbing drones from the left...

Yep..and yet Obama didn't volunteer to serve...how is that figure with Obama's love for our country?? Nice patriotism... And you also forget your skirt chasing former president who ran off to England...

Back in 2009, Brian Williams literally bowed to Barack Obama. Today, he's telling like it is from the Obama campaign trail: the size of the crowds are way down from last time around, and the candidate is not the same man he was in '08.

CHUCK TODD: You know, everybody wants to know crowd size. What was it like? What kind of crowd did they get last night? What have you been seeing? Do you feel like there is enthusiasm on the trail from what you watched?

BRIAN WILLIAMS: What we're doing out here is basically devoting half of our "Rock Center" broadcast tonight to a minute by minute what-it's-like. We asked the Romney campaign for the same access, to do the same thing with them. And one of the points I'm going to make: palpably obvious to you, this is not '08. These are not the crowds, this is not the candidate. He's an incumbent looking for re-election. The country's been through a financial shock. And we're in kind of an outdoor park courtyard. It's hard to say any of this with clarity, with surety. but last time this could have been 50,000 people and today I think we're pushing five. So it's just a different time, a different campaign. They're slugging it out. It really will be hand-to-hand combat in the battlegrounds.

Didn't Obama just pull out a 15 thousander to Ryan's 15 hundreder? I don't any rational person will tell you the enthusiasm Romney's crowds comes close to Obama's...although it is quite evident Obama is not pulling the sizes he was four years ago. Then again, wouldn't this be expected? The guy had a wicked recession to fix with a barrage of negative attacks and unprecedented obstructionism. He's got an B+ in my book for accomplishments and an A for guts and courage. I think the people understand that. By the way, if Republicans think this President is so down...why are they suppressing the votes? Should they encourage people to vote in mass to show how they beat the President fair and square? As an independent registered voter, I'll tell you that Republicans know how to push people away. I don't see how they don't become irrelevant in another 25 years. With young people getting more enlightened in addition to their breeds slowly/eventually dying out...I see them being placed on the wrong side of history. Do they really believe history will be kind to them? Or do they care?

Notice how Romney and Ryan smile in joy at boasting that they now have $111 million dollars. They are not smiling because of what they are talking about political wise.

They are smiling because of how much money they have taken from Americans using words such as hope and progress to make theirself rich.

If Romney and Ryan were really into America and not Americans pockets then didn't Romney use the money he obtained from bankrupting businesses to fund his campaign?

Why does he continually ask for your money when he has ever done is live a life of taking other peoples money?

Can you believe the idiots of the GOP and religious right wing having nothing better to do than stalk people at the Library to take pictures of us and what we are doing just so they can pass the information around their circle cult to tell us that what we do are read about or post is wrong.

Get a life. But then again you are always told that you had to be like your mother and like your father where everyone around you had to have some personality trait part of them as well.

Find something to better educate yourself on instead of making yourself think that all worship the lowly ground that your soiled and stench laiden feet trod upon.

Go play in someone elses yard, pup.
