Obama adviser: 'We win the election if it were held today'

DAVENPORT, IA -- President Barack Obama would win a second term if the election were held today, a top adviser to the president argued Wednesday.

A sanguine David Plouffe told reporters Wednesday Obama maintains several paths to winning 270 electoral votes despite some polls showing tightening races in some swing states.

“We win the election if it were held today,” the senior White House adviser told reporters traveling after Obama’s event in Davenport, IA. "Our view is that in all the battleground states we’ve contested, every single one of them, we have a credible pathway to 50 percent."

He counted even the more challenging states for Obama, such as North Carolina, Virginia and Florida in that mix and suggested that the Romney campaign’s continued heavy resource allocation in some of those states meant they weren’t as confident about them as they might say.

“If they felt good about Florida and Virginia I think you’d begin to see them curtail a little bit. And we feel that Florida and Virginia are very winnable for the president,” Plouffe said.

Plouffe also said that the dustup surrounding the president’s interview with the Des Moines Register editorial board, which was first kept off the record but then put back on after the Register went public about it, would not affect voters in Iowa who might be reading that newspaper.

“I know it’ll be a flurry of interest for a few hours but I don’t think it’s something that will impact people who are still deciding how to vote,” he said.

Asked to respond to Donald Trump’s offer of charity money if President Obama releases his college transcripts, Plouffe, grinning, told reporters, “Direct questions to Boston. Because Donald Trump is Mitt Romney’s biggest supporter so he owns everything he says.”

At this late stage of the campaign, I would expect both sides to be predicting a win--if only out of party loyalty to their down ballot candidates. So I discount these predictions from the campaigns. I always thought how difficult it would be to have internal polls saying you are going to lose and still go out and campaign.

Great Point - Steeler.

Yeah, he kept saying he was gonna win, cited to some fantastic polls and just kept running up that hill.

Too bad that election was called before I even got home from work.

Spanky,

All polling was showing Walker ahead with 2 weeks to the election.

Walker even stated "voters want to move forward not backward". Walker repeatedly pointed to job gains in Wisconsin and said we're moving in the right direction. Walker said a change in leadership during a recovery could set us back a couple years.

Thank you for pointing out that Walker's own words are the reason people should not vote for Romney.

Punked, unlike of course O and his totally brilliant plan to get the economy going.

Or were those promises of 'shovel ready' jobs a big old punk?

Cause I know what was not a punk - when he said energy costs would skyrocket. Golly - only had to pay $2.35 this morning.

Debbie - so this looks like a recovery to you. eh? And that would be based upon?

Amy, sweetie- I'm worried about you. Steeler didn't mention any Romney campaign operatives- because the only campaign operatives in the story were OBAMA people.

What Steeler said, though, about campaigning even though you know you're losing? Very telling.

You'll be okay, Ames. Even without Obama in the White House, you can still keep his picture on your desk to inspire you. And-who knows?- you might get to see him more often in January-via satellite on this very network,if that deal works out.

Maybe get a puppy. You can always name him Barack.

Actually, no joe, I was thinking of the Romney campaign when I made my comment. I think Romney expected to stroll into the White House and the fact that he is going to lose yet will have to work hard for the next 2 weeks must be distasteful to Mitt & Ann. After all, they thought it was their turn and they are going to find out that it isn't.

Hey Steeler--I am sure it would be a great tragedy for "Congressman" Ryan to actually have to work for a living. The sad thing is that it will never happen--as you say--he will get picked to be a lobbyist or have a show on the Faux network. He is not real job material--and neither is Mr. Romney!

The election is happening today, and Obama/Joe are winning. People don't know what Romney stands for because he is on both sides of every issue. I don't think that even Romney himself knows what he stands for. He disavows the Republican Party Platform on abortion, but he told Huckabee on national television that he supports the "Personhood" Amendment to the Constitution. We don't know where Romney stands, or where he would "lead" our nation.

This election is only about; 1) Creating American Jobs; in 2) Profitable businesses ,which 3) Generates much needed tax dollars, to 4) Pay for things we NEED & WANT our government to do on our behalf. It only works in that order...PERIOD!

Our capitalistic economic system is built on PROFITS...yes, (gasp) especially for the wealthy...OR the current alternative is 4) the Capitalists simply move away and they will take the jobs and tax money elsewhere! Then we don't have those jobs to buy anything from anyone, PERIOD!

Your responsibility to our national success is to read the labels of products you're buying and, predominately buy "American Made" goods. So, you're saying. "That's too much hassle and work... or, the overseas products are better". Well folks, let me emphasize a realistic scenario that line of thinking has created to the economy in this country.

"John Smith" started the day early awakening to his set alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) at 6 am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). John put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).'

'After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA); he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO); to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA); John got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY);pulled out of the driveway and glanced at his wife's car (MADE IN JAPAN). John noticed his wife's car needed new tires (MADE IN CHINA).'

'John filled his car with gas (IMPORTED FROM SAUDI ARABIA) and continued his search for a "GOOD PAYING AMERICAN JOB.'

'At the end of, yet another, discouraging and fruitless job hunting day, John sat down in front of his computer (MADE IN MALAYSIA), to check For nonexistent job responses.'

'John decided to unwind and relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL), poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA). All this while, John Smith is wondering why he can't find a "GOOD PAYING JOB IN AMERICA."

Does this scenario hit too close to home for you, a family member or close friend? This is what this election is all about folks... 23 Million Americans out of work OR living in poverty because parttime jobs are all they can find; American Companies moving jobs overseas with no end in sight, higher gas prices, rising home foreclosures.

As Americans, we have two choices this November... Four more years, like the last four years... Broken promises, beautiful speeches and a continued declining economy.... OR...

A real chance to pull our economy back from the edge of an economic and financial abyss... This election offers us a candidate who can put the country back to work, because, his records shows he has done that in the past... A candidate with a proven record of reaching across the isle and working with both political parties to reach a compromise that works for the American People. A candidate who won't merely ask, but, demand fair, equal trade agreements; a candidate who will create a positive tax environment for companies to bring jobs back to America...

It's time to stop blaming Bush for Obama's failures.. Obama may have walked into a 9 Trillion Dollar National Debt from Clinton/Bush.. However, the additional 7+ Trillion added to the debt in 3+ years , and another projected 4 Trillon in Debt over the next four years, is ALL OBAMA.. The buck stops with Obama!

So the choices is yours.... What do you want in the next four years...? Obama's "John Smith" Scenario... or, Romney's "5-Point Plan to a balanced and stable America? This election isn't about "Blue or Red".. It's about protecting our nation and future children from our current economic mistakes..

You Choose... Choose Wisely... You can't always undo a stubborn choice and Time Is Running Out.....

Romney has spend so much of the past few years trying to become President and he was not wanted by the Republican party. The only reason he is now (doubtfully) possibly in that positon is because the Republican nominees this time around were so awful, Romney was the best of the pack but not much better. And Romney knows this is his last chance, so low and behold he is desperate enough to act like we have all seen, saying what ever will get him elected. Shameful.

Name one poll that shows Romney ahead in Ohio. There isn't one.

Romney will NOT win Ohio, and will not win the election. The Obama campaign has a much better ground game in Ohio, early voting has started, the auto bailout resonates, and public unions are still organized and upset about Rep. Gov. John Kasich's failed attempt to "break" them in 2010.

Obama wins Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa. Game, set, match.

Let's talk about arrogant asses folks.

It appears all the media outlets, with the exception of MSNBC, have been talking about emails regarding the Libyan situation. In real time this administration knew about the problems, had a drone in the air, but did nothing to improve the situation. Troops were standing nearby to respond, along with the drone that could fire missles.

But yet nothing was done except for stating, for several days, it wasn't a terrorist attack. Nothing but a reaction to a video not many saw. What have we heard from the President? In three debates he stated it was due to a video. We didn't know. yada, yada, yada.

This is an outrage! Four Americans killed by terrorists, and NOTHING is done, nor is it even acknowledged for some time.

Our country needs to investigate what actually happened in our government, who knew, and why is this being covered up!!!!! This is worse than Watergate.

I do hope, for no other reason than this, that Mitt Romney is elected President. Should Obama, if elected, should face impeachment over this. "The Buck Stops With This Man", and if impeached, the thought of Biden assuming the throne is too much to handle.

Now MSNBC, with your competitors breaking this story, why do you choose to ignore it?

Okay Jennifer Rene, you have access to the King & Queen, what's happening and why?

Nothing's being covered up. Our consulate in Benghazi was attacked by terrorists. We are fighting a war on terror. Sometimes they fight back and horrible things happen. It truly sucks, but there will be times when the terrorists kill someone.

The goal should be to find out who they are and track them down, not to further divide the country over something that once would have brought us closer together.

I don't know. Trust is a strong word. Maybe I am just more engaged on issues of the day than most people, but I knew that it was probably a terrorist attack from day 2. Whether that story came from foreign news services or the administration or from bloggers who had contacts in the area or some combination of all of that I don't know. In fact, I was rather surprised that a couple weeks after that, it became an issue because it was pretty self-evident from the start that what happened in Benghazi was not the same as what happened in Cairo. In Cairo, basically the extent of what they did was scale the wall and burn a flag, right?

So to me, the real issue is not what Susan Rice said a few days after it happened, but whether or not anything is happening to track these guys down or not. I would like to get some updates on that, but at the same time, I can understand why we aren't. The world is hypersensitive to any information coming out these days, so if they tell us they have some of them, but not all of them or have some good information on who they might be, these guys might rabbit and disappear forever. And that might the thing that causes us to not get them for ten years or more like it took with Bin Laden.

But the bottom line, to me anyway, is that getting pissed off at our government because for two weeks various representatives made speculations that turned out to be wrong is the wrong way to go. If there's anything that would invite further attacks, it would be for the terrorists to know that they can easily divide Americans by succeeding in hurting us. As soon as that starts to happen, the terrorists basically win.

  • 3 votes
#4.9 - Wed Oct 24, 2012 4:37 PM EDT

It seems perfectly reasonable to me that if our government was receiving conflicting information on what exactly happened in Benghazi, we would receive conflicting information. I don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about this (the semantics, not the incident). I have seen no evidence other than people's opinion that our government is doing anything other than sifting through the conflicting reports to determine what actually happened. The only reason I can see for trying to make it into a cover-up is to make Obama look bad.

Maybe its because the families asked for this not to be politicized. Maybe it's because Mitt has gotten security updates since. Which started one/two weeks after the attack? I don’t doubt the confidence each side is expressing. Each sees their strategy coming together, and can see a clear path to victory. In a race this close it only takes a dash of home cooking to get the analysis to come out in your favor. Romney’s camp believes that a president polling at 47% two weeks before an election will lose, as dissatisfied undecided voters settle on the challenger. The Obama campaign would say that, theories aside, they are actually leading in enough states to win – and GOTV efforts and under-counted Latinos will add to their take. But it raises a larger point: What do the insiders know that we don’t? The answer is, a lot…and nothing.

They certainly have access to a huge amount of inside information that the rest of us don’t. They know where they are sending the candidate and buying ads in the last two weeks, they can match highly-detailed polling against the vote totals they project needing to win key states, and lots of other tactical information that’s kept secret. But they don’t know anything fundamental about the outcome of the race that’s not available to the rest of us. There is something mysterious about “private polling” done by campaigns, but it is no more accurate than the good polling done for media firms. Obama advisor David Axelrod and Romney strategist Stuart Stevens are not staring at secret numbers every morning, then putting on a game face for the public. Their polls may have messaging information and specific demographic breakdowns that help them understand the race and devise strategies, but it’s not as if they both secretly know the public polls are wrong. My hope is that whomever becomes our next president gets this country going in the right direction. Obama is not my choice but its such a close race right now its any ones win at the moment. I am tired of struggling and seeing people struggle while those up in political office cry about their less than desirable 6 digit salaries....paid places to live...retirement....car allowances...oh and did I say their crappy salaries?

The president is using Air Force One criss-crossing the nation campaigning. Who is paying for this and can state facts that can be verified. I hope we taxpayers aren't, regardless of individual affiliation.

Hey, just heard C Mathews asked: "why do the republicans lust for the White House"? Is that stupid or what. He doesn't think dems lust for it? I watch him for comedy. Last night, he was still blaming the Libya attack on the video. He is so out of touch, but he is funny. He's bright but his brain lights are dimming. O better win or he'll have a heart attack.

I'd like to Educate everyone on one thing.

The term TeaBaggers that this Administration and the Liberal Media is so happy using referring to Tea Party members comes from Video Games.

It means that after you shoot your opponent dead, you stand over their dead body and dip your ball sack into their mouth over and over. Isn't that cute!

So, if this Cute Term that the Administration and Liberal Media uses daily does not offend you, go ahead and vote for more of it.

If it does offend you, you might want to contact your representatives and let them know you are disgusted by it.

I know there will be those who still think it's cute, but seriously, is that really Presidential?

If they stopped the game in the 6th inning, the Mets would have won.

Back to Benghazi. Well, if you only follow NBC news then you probably don't have any idea what's going on. See, our embassy was attacked there and a diplomat and 3 others died. Since the facts were not known, and for yet some unknow reason, the Obama administration decided to just say "it was a demonstration spun out of control". Repeatedly....for days. So it boils down to conclusion by elimination. If they didn't know what happened and blamed it on a "demonstration spun out of control"..they lied. If they knew it wasn't a "demonstration spun out of control" and called it that anyway...they lied. The reason they didn't come right out and say "we don't know and we're waiting for the facts" is that there had already been two previous attacks and pleas for additional security by the embassy was turned down. Today, emails were released that pretty much incriminate the administration....no mention of a demonstration...period. Just an ongoing attack that lasted for hours. So, tell us again Mr. Obama...who told the "biggest whopper" at the debate? Shameful.

Oh, wait, you are politicizing this story for an election... Don't worry, those comments will come shortly...

Actually, isn't the President Politicizing this Story by not allowing the Truth to come out before the election?

Those of you that think Romney is winning - better check Nate Silver at five-thirty-eight.com

I hate to rain on your parade - but the President has many more paths to victory than Romney.

No.... changed my mind... I like raining on your parade!

"We win the election if it were held today,” the senior White House adviser told reporters traveling after Obama’s event.."

That is akin to a footballplayer saying,"we win the game if it ends now" as he watches the opponent running toward the goal line for the winning touchdown.

Mitt Mentum continues.Only Ohio is still leaning Obama, because they spent hundreds of millions in nasty Romney attack ads.

Once Ohio polls show Romney ahead, the Obama campaign will fold up its tent.

As I drive around the greater Dayton, Ohio area I have noticed something very interesting. Romney yard signs outnumber Obama yard signs by about 20 to 1. This can only mean 1 of 2 things. Either Romney is WAY more popular than the biased news will report or the Obama supporters are too embarassed to publicly support him.

I don't have a Romney sign up, but I do have a "Stop the war on coal, Fire Obama" sign in my front yard.

Well, I hate to tell all you Odummer well wishers, I don't know one person that is going to vote for the Clown in command right now. They refuse to do the early voting so they can make the great Pretender in charge, sweat! Odummer lies constantly, can't run on his record so all he does is attack and name call. Hasn't passed a budget in the whole 4 years he's been in office, blames everyone but himself. As arrogant as this SOB is, do you really think he will give up all the perks and power that comes with the job? He already promised Russia, he will be more flexible after the next election! What does he got to lose? 4 more years of free reign! He says he's Christian. How many Christians have you met with the name Barack Hussein Obama. He bows to foreign countries, he refuses to call terrorist attacks for what they are, instead he goes and apologizes for a video that DID Not cause 4 Americans to lose their lives. How many times must he lie to you before you believe he is a liar??

Nevada going blue...demographics say Mitt can't win that state...

                      Ohio trending up for Obama...

                      Wisconsin still looking good...

These three stated combined with the usual blue states give Obama the Presidency..

His ground game in swing states is second to none...

His team is smarter than the republicans...

And after Obama wins the pundits, will say the early voting and strong ground game was never truly accounted in the polls...

Obama, Biden and friends will now go all in for the next two weeks and seal the deal...
