Truth Squad: The third and final presidential debate

Andrea Mitchell and NBC's Truth Squad examine claims made by each candidate at the third and final debate of the 2012 presidential election in Boca, Raton, Fla.

NBC News takes a deep dive into the statements made by President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in their third and final debate of the 2012 election cycle.

We take a look at two topics and put their comments to the test.

Iraq
During the debate, Romney said, “We don't want another Iraq, we don't want another Afghanistan. That's not the right course for us.”

But four years ago – during another debate in Boca Raton – NBC’s Tim Russert, the moderator, asked whether the war in Iraq was worth "the cost in blood and treasure we have spent?"

Romney responded: "It was the right decision to go into Iraq. I supported it at the time. I support it now."

The president and Mitt Romney debate the best strategy for keeping the military strong.

Obama also argued that Romney, as recently as two weeks ago, said the administration should have kept troops in Iraq. “This is just a few weeks ago, you indicated that we should still have troops in Iraq,” said the president.

“No I didn't,” Romney responded. “I'm sorry.”

“It was in your speech,” Obama shot back.

“I indicated that you failed to put in place a Status of Forces agreement at the end of the conflict that existed,” Romney said.

But both men were shading their past positions.

The president was referring to an Oct. 8, 2012, speech that Romney gave criticizing the “abrupt” withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq, but the Republican didn’t explicitly say the U.S. should have more troops there.

Romney is right that the administration tried and failed to get an agreement that would have allowed a small force of U.S. troops to remain for several years.

But there is some truth in what the president said -- over the last year, Romney has said he would have left between 10,000 and 30,000 troops in Iraq to transition to Iraqi security forces taking over.

'Apology tour'
During the debate, Romney pulled out one of his most frequent attack lines against the president, charging that Obama went on an “apology tour,” criticizing U.S. actions when he visited other countries early in his presidency.

“And then the president began what I've called an ‘apology tour’ of going to -- to various nations in the Middle East and -- and criticizing America,” Romney said. “I think they looked at that and saw weakness.”

The president says credibility is what's important in dealing with world affairs.

Obama responded, “Nothing Gov. Romney just said is true, starting with this notion of me apologizing, that has been the biggest whopper that’s been told in the course of this campaign and every fact checker and every reporter who has looked at it governor, has said this is not true.”

This charge is so central to Romney campaign that the governor even titled his own book, “No Apology.”

So is Romney right about this?

The president pushed back hard, insisting that he never used the word “apologize” when explaining that he thought the U.S. had made some mistakes in dealing with the world.

But this is open to interpretation. Romney points to several examples, including when the president said, in Strasbourg , France, in 2009 that, “America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.”

Romney claims that shows weakness, which is harmful to U.S. positioning in the world.

The Empty Chair:

In tonight's debate it was apparent that Mitt Romney just wanted to get through the evening. He looked and acted like President Obama (acted) in the first debate. Romney spoke in platitudes, and rehearsed talking points without any sense that he was talking about real people living on planet Earth. I lost track of how many times Romney agreed with President Obama. In fact Mitt Romney was the empty chair, and could have just as well emailed in his gibberish.

CBS flash poll: Obama won 53%. Romney won 23%. Undecided 23%. PPP Poll: Obama 53%--Romney 43%. CNN Obama 48% Romney 40%.

Only those living in the ‘bubble’ where facts don’t get in can honestly say that R$mney won this debate (hat tip Bill Maher). Every time he finished agreeing with President Obama, he frantically and desperately attempted to PIVOT to domestic issues.

There was absolutely no depth or even basic GRASP of the gravity of some of these issues. WAR is not just a card game. These are REAL people sacrificing ALL for this ass wipe’s ability to sit there and morph into a faded copy of an unfit leader.

Even R$mney’s GRANDCHILD was desperately seeking the President! R$mney on the International stage would be a complete and utter FAIL!

Four More for 44! Sorry, Mitt Romney does NOT pass the CIC test. He was completely OUT of his Depth!

So, HopeisGone, how about we post the entire quote and see what reality and context can do to your ridiculous lie...

Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

Hopeisgone..................here is the full paragraph from the President's book "Audacity of Hope":

The actual quote from the book is from page 261 and is as follows: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Read the last sentence in the context of the paragraph. He is just saying that he will be with the people who have come to this country, at a crucial time when they need support.

wiki.answers.com › ... › English LanguageCachedShare

You will note that there is no mention of Muslims and the fact that he says Arabs and Pakistani is being twisted to suit someone's twisted dark hearted agenda. If you read the complete book you would know the quote was totally wrong.

Obama did a good job explaining his foreign policy. Romney really struggled with it especially when he talked about how weak our Navy is since we had more boats in WWI. Obama was either amazingly well prepared or he improvised that "we have fewer horses and bayonets now too." A definite home run for Obama.

It is amazing that Romney wants to increase defense spending $2 trillion, yet he obviously doesn't even know how to judge military strength or tactical needs.

Romney mirrored Obama's positions all night. I thought Romney had been criticizing the Obama foreign policy. Now, he supports it.

Romney shakes his etch-a-sketch again. Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?

Only a man with no integrity can change positions on such important matters so effortlessly. Romney is a successful con man. Romney cannot be trusted.

Mitt The Twitt Opens his Mouth Again.

Romney: Instagram ‘Must Be Banned’

Oct. 21, 2012

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney called
for the banning of Instagram today, apparently under the misapprehension that
the popular photo sharing app is used for measuring quantities of illegal
street drugs.

The former Massachusetts
governor was speaking at a retirement home in Florida,
part of a last-minute campaign swing before Monday's presidential debate.

He used the opportunity to discuss crime and substance abuse
- issues that have not featured prominently in the campaign thus far, but
disproportionately worry older voters.

Fast Beautiful Highs

Romney took a tough no-tolerance stance, claiming Obama has
overseen an unsettling relaxation of drug policy:

"This country is seeing an epidemic of drug use and
drug related violence. Thousands of kids are dying every week from marijuana
overdoses and heroin fueled mass shootings."

"And its not just in the bad neighborhoods. Kids from
good backgrounds are getting caught up too."

"I've just heard about this application - a mobile application
for your iPhone And what you do is place
a small amount of cocaine, or marijuana, or PCP on top of your phone and the
application instantly tells you how many grams you have."

"Its called Instagram. And do you know what the really
scary thing is people? I'm told this instant drug measurement tool is the 9th
most downloaded app for the iPhone." Filter Madness

"I visited the University
of Florida recently. And everyone
in the halls was talking about their Instagrams and how much they were sharing
their 'dope pics' with their friends. They don't even try to hide it anymore.
Under Obama dope has become an acceptable part of the culture."

Romney then tried to link this imaginary drug problem to
Obama's economic policies, and suggested a Romney alternative:

"This is what the youth of Obama's America
look like. Out of work. Up to their eyeballs in debt. And hopeless, they turn
to their Instagrams to sell and consume drugs."

"Well when I am President we'll get our kids off
their iPhones and into good paying jobs. And then we must ban this Instagram tomake it harder for our children to fall into the trap of illegal substances

You have to use smart power in foreign policy, what the Republican Teddy Roosevelt calls - speak softly, and carry a big stick.

.

The GOP has been unnecessarily belligerent and wasted a lot of our scarce resources to achieve not much in return - it's not smart, it's dumb; and War in Iraq comes to mind. Just because Saddam Hussein attempted to assassinate Bush Sr, it's not justification to hijeck the entire Amerian nation to take out Saddam Hussein, right?

Hopeisgone, that is easy to answer and I'm surprised that you ask since they are talking about two different things entirely.

When Israel is attacked, by anyone, Obama will stand behind them. That kind of attack implies a military attack, or a terrorist attack.

His statement on standing with Muslims includes something very interesting, which you have included, "should the political winds shift in an ugly direction".

I hope that you have enough erudition to understand what that means and can see the very clear difference. In this statement of standing with Muslims, Obama is stating that he will stand with individual Muslim believers if they fall under attack by a movement of the ignorant being driven by a political ill wind. You know, like a politician demonizing the entire Muslim religion for his own political gain, as has been done in the past against Jews, and, come to think of it, lately, against Muslims.

Romney wants to be president, but obviously is not passionate about politics, current events, and foreign policy. He thinks he can just study up and give a book report. Contrary to the FAUX Noise spin, Romney's performance was NOT even a passing grade.

It was fantastic seeing President Obama call out Romney, regardless of which Romney showed up -- Moderate Romney for peace or neocon Hawk Romney who believes in a military answer to everything instead of diplomacy, including engaging our enemies (or frienemies).

Romney clearly is NOT ready to be President, Commander in Chief, and leader of the free world. Haunting to think of it, really.

credibility and integrity are key in foreign affairs.............Mr. Romney has proven he has neither and would all but sell his soul to become President...

how can you count on a guy who has no difinitive stand on any subject what so ever....our allies have to be able to trust we will do what we say and our enemies need to be able to trust what we say we will do.........

Mr. Romney's performance would be laughable if it were not on such a serious subject.

Putting the debate into context, a sitting president should smoke a state governor on foreign policy. Obama barely held his own considering the length of time, he versus Romney, has spent on the topic. In 2008, Obama could barely spell foreign policy. There has been a big improvement tho. He identified those ships with aeroplanes landing on them and ships going under the water as aircraft carriers and submarines. What a smart guy he is.

Ken: I wouldn't exactly call Obama's performance "holding his own." Anyone who has been paying attention the last 4 years knows that Obama has once again lied through his teeth. The fact is that he has constantly snubbed Israel. For him to say that he is "a strong supporter of our ally, Israel" is like him saying that he believes in "individual initiative and rugged individualism and business." The fact is that Obama has consistently apologized for America's greatness and has indicated his desire that we just be one among many.

One thing the left doesn't understand is that style points are irrelevant. It's substance that the people want to see, except for his fellow socialists like Chris Mathews. So, it's clear that Romney, yet again, was the clear winner of this debate. The good thing for the libs is that most people who are undecided are people who don't pay much attention to politics anyway, so again they didn't see Obama's dismal performance. They were watch football or baseball instead. Of course, they aren't as likely to vote either.

We need a truth squad that can tell us if a candidate believes in their own words or not. Romney's got half the country supporting him because he does and says what he needs to say at any moment in time.

There isn't one of you here on the Vine that can tell me his positions last night were expected or ever taken before last night. Unreal.

Was it the real Mitt? Did his foreign policy briefings cause him to see Jesus (well... you know what I mean). Or was this just clever but not so transparent campaign tactics? Or does he simply have very smart handlers handling an ex- CEO that has years of lying through his teeth under his belt?

My vote is the latter.

We can actually support Israel better by getting out from under her skirt... and that is all he did. He put a little daylight between us so both can be more objective and productive.

And the notion that he doesn't believe in individualism and business is not even close... he just wants us to stop humping business' leg while ignoring the rest of America.

Obama is a disgrace to the US ARMY!!!

No, the disgrace to the US Army is the previous Republican administration. They started the war in Afghanistan but never finished the job. Instead, Bush/Cheney cherry-picked data to show a non-existent connection with Al Quaeda and imaginary WMD's (just where are those pesky WMD's anyway?) to go haring off to Iraq and decreased focus on the war in Afghanistan. If anything showed weakness and a lack of resolve to our enemies, this did! They put an idiot in charge, Donald Rumsfeld, and then refused to replace him in spite of demonstrated incompetence in two wars, not just one!

Iraq and Afghanistan - C'mon! 10 years to subdue two countries smaller than some US states? WWI lasted 4 years and WWII lasted 6 years. These were wars fought on a global scale.

The Republicans in charge lost sight of the goal. More worried about Halliburton's profits than US security, they dithered until the clock ran out and then retired to live in luxury on "thank you's" from Halliburton while Obama was left with the mess they created.

This whole thing about Israel pisses me off. Obama has said that Israel needs to stop its settlements, if it ever want peace. You can't just keep building houses in lands that is not your's. It would be like us here in the US taking over a peace of Canada and start building a city there. Israel just can't keep on the way they are and expect us to protect them. If they want our protection, then they must act in a responsible manner. The President has told them that. Out protection comes with conditions as it should.

This is a true description of the damage That G.W. Bush has done to America's reputation, and it was time to conduct some actual diplomacy. This is how Obama was able to bring enough countries together to inflict crippling sanctions on Iran. (Their currency is down 80% since 2011.)

The ex-Bush neocons that make up Romney's foreign policy team feel that blunt force is way to deal with the world, and have been pushing for a war with Iran, just as they pushed (succcessfully) for war with Iraq. Dangerous.

he didn't say we have "none", he said we have "fewer."

Republican Strategy compared to real life event:

Republican School Principal turned Arsonist burns down a school in 2008...

New Democratic Principal refers to the tragedy of the school being burned down in 2008.

Republicans scream and say quit blaming that first principal for the damage and cost of rebuilding - IT IS NOW 2009....

Romney got schooled.

He said last night:

My plan to get the industry on its feet when it was in real trouble was not to start writing checks. It was President Bush that wrote the first checks. I disagree with that. I said they need — these companies need to go through a managed bankruptcy, and in that process they can get government help and government guarantees, but they need to go through bankruptcy to get rid of excess cost and the debt burden that they'd — they'd built up.

And fortunately the president picked —

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Governor Romney, that's not what you said.

MR. ROMNEY: Fortunately, the president — you can take — you can take a look at the op-ed.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Governor, you did not —

MR. ROMNEY: You can take a look at the op-ed.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: You did not say that you would provide, Governor, help.

Here is the last line from Wrongme's op-ed on letting Detroit go bankrupt:

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.
*********************************

Wrongme wants us to believe that by 'government help' he either is talking about money, or not, depending on what you want to hear.

Maybe he was talking about cheerleading. The President is correct when he said there was no private help available. Romney conveniently forgets that major banks were failing left and right. This man is just too stupid for the job. Romney is wrong about America, and wrong FOR America.

Star Obama was wrong on the bailout and Romney's position. The op-ed in the Times does say federal guarantees for car buyers so the President lied again as he has done consistently and with help from the media. Despite his constant lies and the main stream media helping him every way possible, Romney is still in position to win the Presidency. I guess Americans can read between the lines. We will know November 6th unles Obama loses then we can count on recount after recount.

Many simply fail to realize Romney was CORRECT on what he said about a "managed bankruptcy" by GM with U.S. loan guarantees. Even more fail to realize that GM went through a bankruptcy ANYWAY ... with the U.S. government bailing out woefully underfunded Cadillac health plans for union retirees, while the U.S. now holds GM stock ... a stock now worth substantially less per share than what the U.S. paid for it !!!

So Obama lied about this and this "fact" was conveniently omitted by the writer(s) of this story.

Once again, President Obama cannot tell the truth about the auto bailout.

  1. Romney never said "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt", that was what the NY Times Editorial Staff titled the article.
  2. President Obama's claim that Romney wanted Detroit to go out of business is a lie.
  3. Romney wrote that "A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs." and "The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk."
  4. President Obama actually put GM and Chrysler through a managed bankruptcy AFTER giving the bailout money.

I have one observation to point out. It has nothing to do with the debate, but with all of you liberals.

Why do you hold a double standard when it comes to the white house and oval office? The President of the United States of America should ALWAYS be refered to as Mr President, or President So&so, for LIFE. Yes there are some idiots that call President Obama by less than desireable terms. But you by far are the worse ones!

I have NEVER seen a liberal post refer to President Bush as such! Most of the time it is Dubya.

As a sign of respect to the office, refer to them as presidents. If you do not, everybody is to assume you do not respect the government system that we Americans have.

The President is to be refered to properly even if you do not respect him! It is a sign of respect for the office of the Presidency at the very least!.

I'm sick and tired of watching disrespectful people. they are everywhere, on tv, at work, in public. Even during the debates! Countless times President Obama interrupted Governor Romney over the three debates! When The President would do so, Gov. Romney would allow it and liberals spun that as him showing weakness. I saw it as Respectful. I thought he was showing that he was the better man. Last nights debate he didnt allow it and I think that he sank to the Presidents level when trying to talk over him.

As for the "winner"; Who figures this?? I was never asked who I would vote for! Do the pollers call up people at random? or do they poll only the people they want to to make the result what they want? DONT EVER TRUST A POLL!! They are not accurate and are easily rigged! TRUE.

Well that was my rant for today. Just remember, Respect goes both ways. If you cannot show the office of the President any respect; Dont expect anybody else to respect it either when your candidate is on the receiving end of it.

Supporting a decision on Iraq and then saying now that the US does not want another Iraq is not a flip no matter how much liberals would like to spin it. Both of his statements are true and exclusive of each other. Would Americans like to be involved in another Iraq style conflict? No I don't believe so. Was it worth remove Saddam from power and liberating Iraq? Yes it was and the vast majority of America and Congress felt the same including the same liberals who are now criticizing the decision as Monday morning QB's. Criticizing the abrupt pull out of American forces in Iraq and making the statement that he would have handled it differently is also not a flip flop but instead shows a contrast between the two candidates. The spin put on the fact check by FR is liberal to the end and not even very good. Obama did say the remarks that Romney pointed out in the "Apology Tour" discussion, not once but several times in the last four years. He has shown weakness. Obama's words and actions show he is the one flipping back and forth on Israel so no one is really certain if he would throw Israel under the bus if another war started in the middle east. Not the way to treat a long term allies.

Jim

Obama was correct when he stated Romney had opposed direct Federal loans to GM and Chrysler. Romney stated that he would have guaranteed loans once GM and Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy. What is the difference between these two different positions?

Obama's direct government loans to automakers kept their production of cars going. Parts suppliers were able to continue selling parts to GM and Chrysler before they filed for bankruptcy and while they were in bankruptcy. Auto workers continued to be employed and auto dealerships were able to restock as they needed to.

Under Romney's proposal, GM and Chrysler would have had to shut down production until they emerged from bankruptcy. The parts suppliers would have had to wait for months for their cash flow from auto parts sales to recover. Many of these suppliers would have ended up in bankruptcy as well under Romney's plan.

When GM and Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy, they would have had to find private financing (even though with guaranteed loans, the US would still have been on the hook for any investor losses).

Circuit City went into bankruptcy a few months earlier and they could not find any private financing to save them. The same story could have occurred with GM and Chrysler under Romney's plan.

There is a difference between Romney and Obama on saving the auto industry.

Obama's plan worked and a million jobs were saved at GM and Chrysler and their parts suppliers.

Romney's plan could have cost our country a million jobs. Parts suppliers could have been devastated undermining even the production of other makes of cars in the US due to supply chain disruptions. Romney's plan assumed the government could not do this well and that the private sector always does it better. This is his ideology, his belief, and he was very wrong here.

Obama's pragmatism and realistic approach to near collapse of auto industry saved the auto industry in America. GM and Chrysler have returned to profitability and are expanding. America has regained its leadership role in car manufacturing in the world today.

Romney was wrong. Obama was right.

OBAMA 2012....for a better, fairer America.

It is amazing that Romney wants to increase defense spending $2 trillion, yet he obviously doesn't even know how to judge military strength or tactical needs.

Not only that, but the most important job of the Commander in Chief is taking care of the troops.

Let's look at Mitt's view of the troops, or better stated, no view of the troops. In his acceptance speech, Romney didn't state one word about the troops or the returning veterans. In all three debates, Romney never mentioned one word about the troops. Obama stated his support regarding taking care of the troops, especially of returning veterans, in his acceptance speech and mentioned the troops three time during last night's debate.

Romney wants to be CiC, with the priority of building many weapons systems that the military hasn't asked for. Doing so will fatten the wallets of the defense industry CEOs. The troops, on the other hand, well they're part of the 47% who can't take responsibility for their lives. Romney doesn't care about such rift-raft. Besides, it's not like any of his family is affected. Draft-dogging Romney and his brood are incompatible with military service. That's for the lower species of human beings.

Those of you, especially veterans, who support Romney, think about this very hard. If Romney becomes president, returning veterans can expect squat from his administration. The right wing stance on supporting the returning troops has already been stated when Congress (the HoR) voted down the bill to enact programs to help returning veterans get job/vocational training and employment assistance. The republicans all voted to fund two wars to the tune of trillions of dollars, but can't find one Billion to help those that were sent to fight the wars.

This 31-year veteran says: Romney for Commander in Chief – IDON”T THINK SO!!

Romney just BRILLIANT he show he can be COMMANDER IN CHIEF, Romney did not focus in blame Obama for his failed policies, nor in the Libya incident , it is all over the news Obama fail big time, and Hilary blame herself to cover Obama's back. EXCELLENT STRATEGY. Romney appeal to undecided voters , the ones that the economy matter the most , not foreign policy Obama in this subject is already done. Romney put more emphasis in economy and did it well, Romney put emphasis about work with both parties and he mention several times , Obama has no record of work bipartisan , that is what we need , we are stuck in the mud and Romney will make this economy works. PEACE WITH STRENGTH.

Romney lose the battle but he will be the next president, just look at the polls next week , you will be surprise of the results.

imaginary WMD's (just where are those pesky WMD's anyway?)

They are probably sitting right alongside the protesters in Libya that sparked the attack on the consulate.

And all this talk about the military isn't asking for money? As the wife of a Marine who served in Afghanistan, I can tell you they need money. They were on one meal a day for over a month. No batteries for their optical equipment, the list goes on. But they don't need any more money, they can make do - right? How can the president claim to care about the military when some of their basic human needs (let alone functional needs) are not being met?

In looking at the zingers last night it occurred to me the President is dismissive and arrogant. So the real question is will he be able to work in a bi-partisan manner this time? The answer is clear "let me be clear" no way! This is the biggest problem with the partisanship by this administration and the various members in the Congress. We will continue a fast sled ride right over the cliff and to the bottom if we don't clean out the Congress and the Presidency this cycle.

You start with the big LIE. Obama is no Communist. Perhaps you are, since you show no respect for our President.

While Obama did seek to keep 3000 to 5000 trainers in Iraq, Iraq wanted us out, so we now do this training in neighboring countries.

Obama did not ever seek to keep combat troops in Iraq after Dec. 2011.

How about you? My retirement just went WAY DOWN again today!

@shaak322

thousands of businesses went under because they could not secure financing to keep them going when cash flow slowed down. Obama chose to bail out the business that was most in the news: GM.. He saved a lot of incredibly overpaid workers whose pensions and insanely high wages (negotiated by the unions) broke GM in the first place. Instead, he could have shifted toward supporting small businesses and kept the banks out of lockdown mode. Small businesses were folding left and right for ONE reason: cash flow problems.. the economy slowed when the housing market crashed, people stopped buying for a short time, and businesses that were dependent on steady cash flow (which MOST businesses are) could not get loans and had existing credit lines reduced and had to close the doors, even if they were very financially sound companies. Imagine having a company with $10 million in inventory and $10 million in receivables, but your customers can't afford to pay because their businesses hit a slow period.. so you have to go to the bank to borrow to get through it.. you have 20 million in assets, just no cash to make payroll.. but Obama's administration locked down banks from loaning money to almost everyone.. So those companies went to the banks to borrow to make payroll and guess what? They were turned away.. Even the banks NOT hit hard by the exploding housing bubble were told by the government regulators to STOP loaning money until things were sorted out. Companies with positive assets couldn't get loans and they closed the doors or downsized dramatically, and MILLIONS of people lost their jobs..

But at least those guys putting the same 3 screws in a car frame on an assembly line for $32 per hour got to keep their jobs.. that is what is important, right? That GM got to keep making cars that NOBODY was buying because EVERYONE was worried about losing their job.. Obama sure did well there, didn't he.. So, of the ~10 million people who lost their jobs, how many of those jobs were created when Obama printed almost a trillion dollars that the coffers didn't have? Instead of focusing on the core of the economy - small businesses - and helping banks to provide short term loans to those businesses to keep the doors open until the fear generated by the housing fiasco subsided and people started spending money again, he bailed out an industry that had been losing millions every quarter for years. He saved, what, 10,000 jobs? 20? At the cost of hundreds of thousands, and even millions..

This is why, regardless of how much I don't like Mitt Romney, I will still vote Republican across the board. The GOP is not always aligned with what I find important, but at least they put businesses first, which means they put the WORKING population first..

Ask any small businessman what the Obamacare will cost him next year if Obama is re-elected and the plan stands as is.. either you will get an "I don't know" because the plan is so complicated it costs a LOT of money to figure it out, or you will get "a whole lot and people will lose jobs because I can't afford to keep everyone on staff and still spend what I am required to spend" by those who have spent the money to figure out what it really means.

One more note - when you are talking "small business", you aren't talking about mom and pop operations, you are talking companies who hire 10, 20, 100, even 200 or more people. When expenses go up in a down economy, the ONLY way to stay afloat is to cut overhead, which means trimming jobs. It won't just be the GM's and the AT&T's and the Microsofts who will be cutting jobs, it will be thousands upon thousands of small businesses who employ millions of people who will be forced to cut jobs or pay less. And the CEO's of these small businesses don't make millions.. they might be worth it on paper, but these aren't multi-million dollar salary CEO's, they are "joe the plumber" owners who are already paying 35%, plus double social security, plus state and local taxes, and are lucky to see half their salary. When Obama talks about taxing the "rich", these are the people who suffer for it.. When he talks about taxing the businesses, it is these companies who end up paying for his 2.2 trillion in new spending. Don't be fooled by the media hype.

Best analysis I heard from the post debate analysis teams were the CNN reviews where they basically said

Mitt Romney has changed his position, again, and has the same foreign policy positions as the President.

If this was the primary, Romney would be gone. Since its the general election, the Republican party just does not care. They will never vote for President Obama and the GOP just hates him so much it does not matter what Mitt Romney says.

THAT's why from now until election day you will hear nothing but lies from the GOP. They will say anything to get a vote.

You have no idea what you are voting for, except you can be sure you have not been told the truth.

Remember the 2010 elections, when the GOP was going to give us jobs bills? Can anyone point to ONE jobs bill (a real jobs bill, not the kill the ACA bills) that the GOP has proposed and passed ?

If the GOP is promising to lower your taxes, you can bet they will go up. If the GOP promises to secure Medicare and Social Security, you better believe they want to end them.

THAT is the reality with the GOP.

I never called Bush a communist or fascist or a socialist. I did not question his patriotism. I did not question his religious beliefs. I did not repeat lies about him and I did not make up lies about him.

I did question Bush's policy decisions such as running up the deficit and invading Iraq while weapons inspectors had gained unlimited access to Iraq's suspected weapons sites. I questioned his preparedness during Hurricane Katrina as his legal advisers debated Federal authority in mounting rescue operations.

I stand by my criticism of JT for lack of respect towards President and his lie about him being a Communist.

The auto industry stood to lose about one million jobs. Obama saved them. His stimulus ended the recession in six months. This saved many businesses and many jobs.

The auto industry is a special case. Bush policy of allowing fuel mileage standards to lapse instead of extending them to SUV's on light truck frames led the auto industry to produce many more high profit, gas guzzling SUV's than they otherwise would have produced. When gas prices hit $4/ gallon as our economy fell into a deeper recession in summer 2008, it is obvious that the Bush policy towards fuel mileage standards directly contributed to the auto industry's plight.

When government policy contributes to an industry's failure as in this case, it is only being fair for the government to try to make up for this policy failure.

Say logic required, do vote. A vote for the third party or Ron Paul has more effect than a vote for obama/romney. There are less of us and the democrats/republicans always strive to get our votes.

You need to be smarter than they are. Have you noticed that neither obama nor romney has made any effort to get the black vote! Why? Well obama knows they are in the bag, so he doesn't need to and romney knows it's a lost cause.

Norman Thomas ran for president until he achieved everything that he set out to get, He won and I don't think that he ever got an electoral vote.

Kind of funny how someone above found it disrespectful for people to refer to GW Bush as Dubya. The first time I remember seeing it was when I was watching the nightly news and saw the pic of one of our tanks that had a phrase "Dubya's Justice" or something similar painted on the muzzle of a tank. So if that is disrespectful, then maybe our military didn't get that memo.

Consolation prize hell, why is it Romney and his fellow GOP friends advocate bankruptcy for corporations, yet when it comes to people filing bankruptcy, he advocates against it? People are corporations, so according to the Romney philosophy, people should simply restructure their debt, get a clean break, and start over again. Newt has done it, Trump has done it, yet, Romney will prevent any other citizen from declaring bankruptcy. The two-faced prick is at it again.

If anyone thinks Iran is going to lay down with just sanctions, that is a dangerous position. They are still conducting trade with several Asian countries and may not be as weak as you think. Just keep giving them more time like they want. The war with Japan in 1941 began after extended sanctions were imposed. Iran would like nothing more than to wipe the infidels off the face of the earth and has repeated that several times. Obama just doesn't seem to take it seriously enough and more time should have been devoted to that topic.

If anyone thinks Iran is going to lay down with just sanctions, that is a dangerous position.

Is it? From a recent editorial in the Boston Globe:

The Iranian economy appears to be teetering on the brink of collapse, thanks to a chokehold of unprecedented international sanctions. On Monday and Tuesday, Iran’s currency lost 40 percent of its value. Protests have erupted in Tehran over the skyrocketing price of food. On Thursday, the regime arrested more than a dozen people on charges of manipulating the rial, Iran’s currency. The country’s central bank can’t shore up the rial with foreign reserves because much of those reserves — stored in banks overseas — have been frozen by the sanctions.

On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called allegations against Iran “baseless” and “colonialism in a new shape.” But he also raised the possibility the issue could be resolved by negotiations, despite the failure of previous rounds of talks. “Each time that the two sides came close to some kind of mutual understanding, somehow it was disrupted,” he said. “But we have not lost hope.”

But Iranian people don’t seem to be buying it. “Down with this lying government,” merchants in Tehran’s central market reportedly chanted. Other reports indicate that some protesters held signs reading, “We don’t want nuclear energy.”

The Iranian people are in pain. The cost of basic goods, including food, has risen 80 percent in the past year. There is a risk that Iranians will blame the West, rather than their own government, for their hardships. However, the suffering that comes with sanctions is less than with a war. As long as there is a chance that heavy sanctions might lead to a halt in Iran’s enrichment activities, sanctions should be pursued over plans for a military strike.

No, the sanctions are working just fine, thank you! And, as the article above notes, it causes a helluva lot less hardship than a war with Iran would.

Obama failed to explain why, some two weeks after the Al Qaeda attack in Behghazi, he and his staff were still spinning the fairy tale that it was caused by a 17 min film clip that was anti-Mohammed in nature. The blame game was clearly intended to hide the reality for political purposes when the State Department had full knowledge within 24 hours that this was a TERRORIST attack !

Obama thinks if he ignores terrorist attacks, they will simply go away and he can be re-elected.

Anyone notice how relieved Romney was each time he got to go SECOND on a question?!

That way he didn't have to "remember" his position on the issue for more than a few seconds:

Romcorder-in-chief; OK the president is speaking - RECORD - oops now he's done - quick REWIND --- OK my turn now - PLAY!!!!

        What a freakin joke.

'Governor Romney has suggested that being president of this country has a lot to do, to a certain extent, about character, ....I've been President here for nearly four years, and I can tell you without hesitation: Being President of this country is entirely about character. Character and Leadership mean you stand on a side for something and citizens can trust and understand the side you stand on even if they don't agree with your stance. You have to be steady. Governor Romney has been anything and everything BUT steady. You cannot lead America in forty different directions at the same time and you cannot take one stance with a constituency and then take a completely reverse stance with another. That's NOT leadership.

The Governor falied the CIC test completely last night and it had nothing to do with anything he'd memorized - it had everything to do with Character and his total lack thereof.

Significant and frequent intelligence "leaks" coming from HIGH within this administration does not constitute "Real Leadership". The Pakistani doctor whose information was a KEY to identifying Osama Bin Laden is facing 20 years in prison because of security leaks. Members of the Navy Seals were also "leaked" !

You have been buying Republican and Romney lies for so long, you cannot even begin to see the reality that exists in the world. Fox News fantasies and Limbaugh lies and hate radio really don't prepare their devotees for living in the real world.

Some samples of the right wing LIES:

Rampant voter fraud, a President that does not meet Constitutional test for citizenship, a President who wants to run the auto industry, a President who is Muslim, a President who is socialist, a President who is un-american. And now the mainstream media is part of the liberal conspiracy against Americans. Really?

Who was it on Obama's Inauguration Day that plotted to make Obama fail even if it meant making America fail? Who was it that said "stimulus doesn't work" after supporting it for Reagan and Bush II? Who was it that said Iraq would deteriorate into chaos without a continued American presence there?

The Republican Party did or said all these things, yet they pretend they are the true Americans. Only Republicans can be true Americans. How's that for capturing the spirit of democracy?

I beg to differ. Obama is the real American here. Democrats put country first. Republicans put Party first.

Support the Party that puts country first.

        OBAMA, Democrats 2012.....putting America first.

One of the most disturbing moments came when moderator Bob Schieffer of CBS News asked: "Would either of you be willing to declare that an attack on Israel is an attack on the United States, which of course is the same promise that we give to our close allies like Japan? And if you made such a declaration, would not that deter Iran? It's certainly deterred the Soviet Union for a long, long time when we made that -- when we made that promise to our allies."

This was a flawed question. The far more important question is: If diplomacy and sanctions and covert operations don't stop Iran from getting the Bomb, would you fully support Israel if Prime Minister Netanyahu feels he has no choice but to order preemptive military strikes on Iran.

Nevertheless, President Obama accepted the premise of the question and replied, "I will stand with Israel if they are attacked." Mr. Obama tried to portray himself as a strong ally of Israel throughout the rest of that answer and the entirety of the evening. But consider his answer more carefully. The President did not say unequivocally that he would stand with Israel in a preemptive strike on Iran, if that were the last option available. Rather, Mr. Obama insisted he would help Israel after Iran attacks the Jewish state. But if Iran attacks Israel with nuclear weapons, it would be too late for American military assistance to do much good. Indeed, it is immoral for an American president to vow to defend Israel only after she has been attacked with nuclear weapons. Yet this is the President's position.

Romney didn't need to attack Obama to show he is a failure, Obama lie about his relationship with Israel, Obama lie about his success in Meddle East. Obama repudiate Romney for his trip to Israel to see BB and have a fundraiser diner, but Obama left the White House when our Consulate in Benghazi was attach to do another fundraiser in Las Vegas. Romney show his knowledge of the situation in Meddle East, he knows Obama is death and congratulate Obama even we know Bush got the information that link to his carrier , but he also mention even with his death AlQaeda is arising , something Obama wants to deny.

It only appeared that way. Romney wanted it appear that way. He morphed into Obama. Reason: he can't reveal his true foreign policy. If one really listened too him, one would have realized that he wants a world economy. He wants a partnership with China. he wants open free trade with Latin America. He promised to create 12,0o0 new jobs, but he sure didn't commit to them being here in the USA. His economy is not the economy of the USA. He could care less about the people; just the international economy.

          Mitt Romney's Nonsensical Middle-East Geography

During the debate tonight, Mitt Romney mentioned that Syria is important because it's Iran's "route to the sea." The thing is, Iran doesn't even border Syria, as you can see our childishly-annotated map above. And Iran already has access to the sea on its southern border.

Yes, our fleet is smaller than it was in 1916 - but consider the state of the art in 1916. Would any of the warships in 1916 stand up against those that exist now?

President Obama as Commander in Chief, has led team america to pick off those terrorists where ever they hide. Killing Bin Laden should be celebrated by all Americans, yet republicans hate the facts he is dead. They would rather have Bin Laden alive so they could complain President Obama was not doing his job.

Just like Obama pointed out, Romney wouldn't even look for Bin Laden, then Romney said he would have made the same decision as the president. Update: Armed Forces Show Overwhelming Support for Obama
By Michelle Martinelli on October 22, 2012 9:10 AM

Update, Oct. 21: Fundraising numbers for the month of September show Obama continuing to dominate when it comes to contributions from the military. The new data, which came in after the story below was published Oct. 15, show he raised $142,197, just a shade less than he collected in August, his strongest month with this set of donors. Romney brought in $111,015 for his best month ever with military donors, but that was still 22 percent less than Obama received.

So the answer here by the "progressives" is forget the country President Obama will save us...just like he has my fellow 23 million unemployed Americans? Forget the fact the Democratic leadership in both Houses ignore his budget and any budget for that fact. Forget the fact that we are in the worst shape of most of our lifetimes as a country. Forget the fact that we are about to be paying higher taxes in an economy that has shrunk the average wage earner by $4000.00 per year. Lets just go back to letting the same moral pygmies in both parties continue as before...with little or no respect for this President...after all he has earned it by being absent from the process. Lets just party while the Republic burns...is that about it?

But this is open to interpretation. Romney points to several examples, including when the president said, in Strasbourg , France, in 2009 that, “America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.”

Bush was the epitome of arrogance and dismissiveness. Ask the family of any member of the military who died in Iraq. My heart goes out to any family member who has lost a loved one in a needless war, whether Iraq or Viet Nam.

                  I agree Steve,

America has been perceived as arrogant and dismissive during the Bush administration. A lot of damage was done. I believe that Obama has done an excellent job restoring credibility. But of course voMitt wants to revert back to the good old days of table thumping and "my way or the highway" and frankly, that is no way to conduct a foreign policy. But the right wing nutters will never see it that way. None are so blind that don't want to see. On on top of that it was plain and obvious that voMitt had no idea what he was talking about. He rattled of all the names of political factions in Syria that he had drummed into him during the weekend by his debate coaches. He really showed that none of these were his own original thoughts when he mentioned the that the Navy has shrunk their number of ships to a 1917 level. If he had just thought about that for one second, he would have realized how dumb that statement was. He has now clue whatsoever. And that extends to his economic policies as well. He keeps boasting about his record in private business. All he did at Bain was buy, leverage, strip and flip companies. Good for his share holders. But not good for job creation. Now he's going to call China currency manipulators on his first day in office, and he's going to level the playing field. No mention of how he's going to accomplish this. Just idle boasting is all. Again, he hasn't got a clue.

"California, with 12% of the population suffered 22% of the casualties in Iraq. More than anyone else."

What exactly does that mean? Does it mean Californians were targeted? Does it mean they were really bad at their job and died more often as a result? I am confused as to what your statement offers to this conversation..

For the record, Americans as a WHOLE, supported going into IRAQ by over 80%.. that includes liberals.. See, we were UNITED as a nation, and as a nation, we wanted to go into IRAQ and Afghanistan if necessary, and get vengence for what was done. President Bush stood in front of the nation and said this was NOT going to be something that is over in a year or two, that if we go we are in it for the long haul. It is the AMERICAN population who forgot this when the cost started adding up, both in money and in lives. YOU VOTED for it. I know I did, I sure as hell hope Romney did.. Now that it is unpopular, however, the focus is on getting out of the middle east. And pointing fingers at how much it cost us to be there in the first place.

The presidential election is a popularity contest, and when the population changes what it wants, the candidates have to follow or they will lose. This is why politicians flip flop, and if you don't think that they BOTH are doing it, then you either have a short memory or you can't see past president Obama's really good ability to speak.

Julia: When the UN monitors elections in newly formed democracies, one of the main ways they judge the fairness of elections is comparing exit poll results to official voting tallies. Corrupt election officials can tamper with the vote count but they cannot influence the exit polls. If there is more than 1-2% difference between the exit polls and the vote totals, it indicates significant voting fraud.

In the 2004 US election where electronic voting machines were widely used for the first time, there was significant discrepancies between the exit polls and the reported voting totals. Even more suspicious, almost all the discrepancies were in favor of the Republican candidates, which would rule out random machine errors. Add in the fact that most of the voting machine manufacturers were Republican-owned, and they refused to allow their software to be inspected by independent experts, and you have a pretty good case for the need for independent election monitors.

Nope just checking the facts, as it's been the republicians that have been trying to surpress voters. Trying to change early voting, voter laws, & lets not forget throwing away voter registration.

If there is one thing we've learned from this election cycle it's that when the Republicans can't win on the merit of their beliefs, policies or positions

                    They will lie.

So it is NO SURPRISE that Democrats are predicting the only way Republicans win this election is by CHEATING.

and now jim is acting like preemptive preparation for cheaters is some how acceptance of loss?

I can't stop laughing. I see he has NO comment about whether or not Republicans across this land are cheating? Like in Florida voter registrations? Or in New Jersey where registrations for Dems are being thrown in the trash?

yeah,...let FREEDOM ring - as long as it peels for the R's, right?

I think it takes a certain type of sleazy to undermine democracy by CHEATING. And it speaks to the 'win at all costs' mentality these R's seem to have. If you can't beat 'em, cheat 'em. And that is what they do!

Let's see, during the last election our soldiers fighting overseas experienced delays and their votes didn't arrive in time in the U.S. to be counted .... Nov, 2010 as I recall. Oh yeah, Obama was President and most of the soldiers do not support his weak leadership .... imagine, their votes not being counted !

Just FYI....the FBI interrogator of KSM said in an interview that KSM gave no information after the CIA took charge of the interrogation (waterboadring), so this notion that the information to kill OBL came from torture (notice the correct spelling) is just wrong. Regardless of the right wing wet dream that the information to get OBL was done during the Bush years, is just that, a wet dream.

"All we have to do is replace Obama. ... We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don't need someone to think it up or design it."

For one that has traveled overseas a lot I can attest that the U.S status has improved worldwide since 2008. Also I partly agree with Obama's statement which is referred to as an apology, he was simply stating the facts in that in many instances we are arrogant and dismissive. You know kinda like the bigger and older kid in the sand box.

None of us are sad to see the old Libyan regime go, but Obama took us into a war all by himself, undeclared and with no consent from congress. Presidents are not kings, he doesn't get to start wars all by himself. He should have been impeached for his unilateral action. Is this really the model we want future presidents to follow?

Ditto, Ed. People from this country who have never spent time in other countries have no idea how much Pres. Obama has elevated the status of America in the eyes of the people of the rest of this planet. We were an arrogant nation.

People throughout the world don't hate our values. They deeply dislike our arrogance. They resent the fact that we tried to ram our way of life down their throats and impose our parochial sense of justice on their cultures.

If foreign policy experience was the clincher, then Obama would have clearly lost to McCain in 2004. The biggest threat to this country is the debt hole we keep digging ourselves into, and Obama hasn't done ANYTHING to address it. He even completely ignored the recommendations of his own panel, the Simpson-Bowles commission. Only Romney has any chance of fixing our debt mess.

But, but, but, the deficit keeps shrinking. Oh lawdy help us as Obama keeps reducing the deficit and debt. Of course the Romney plan adds trillions to the debt and doesn't balance the budget for 8 years (as if that will ever happen). Romney could care less about debt, as evidenced by his non-leadership at Bain. Romney will only force bankruptcy.

What country are you from? The debt is not shrinking, we're still adding to it, a lot. And every analyst agrees that will be the case for as far as anyone can project until the house of cards collapses. Obama has done nothing to even put us on a path to address the deficit, much less the debt. Obama had his chance and he did nothing. Time to let someone else try, someone who has actually balanced a budget in his lifetime, which Obama has never done, not as president and not before.

Our "debt mess" is because of a far right wing Republican Congress that wouldn't pass, much less even consider, any legislation which would help the economy unless it included add on legislation involving religion or restrictions on women's rights. The House is full of old, ignorant white men who don't give a damn about any of us. They pander to whatever wind blows the weather vane.

No need to get racist and sexist here. The truth is that congress has been addicted to debt for the last 50 years! Through good times and bad, even during those times when the economy was red hot and money was gushing into the treasury, congress managed to spend all the money, and more. It didn't matter what party was in ... it was spend, spend, spend us into a hole. There was always another program to fund, another "good work" to do. Well, we've been sucking the life out of the future (our children's, of course) for a long time. That is the worst kind of selfishness, sticking it to those who won't even be around until after we are gone. Real nice! If we are to avoid total collapse, fixing the debt has got to be the top priority. At this point we can't afford a "feel good" president. We need a serious, adult, hard-nosed manager, regardless of race or gender, to get our house in order. If we don't, we soon won't have a house left.

Danno - and all the rest of the liberals,

The key to fixing the deficeit/debt problem is to grow the economy. Adding additional taxes while implementing a regulatory environment that stifles growth in GDP will not fix the problem. Class warfare is not an answer, but is a good rallying cry for those who cannot understand the principles of macro economics and how that affect micro economics (US).

Obama DID NOT IGNORE the commission. Remember this?

                      From

Representative Paul Ryan was a pivotal figure in killing the 2010 Bowles-Simpson agreement, which Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney now holds out as a model for putting America’s fiscal house in order.

The 18-member panel needed 14 votes to send a 10-year plan to trim the debt to Congress for a vote. As his party’s then- ranking member on the House Budget Committee, Ryan led a bloc of three House Republicans who denied the additional votes needed.

All three Senate Republicans on the panel backed the plan and one of them, former New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg, said he believes the House Republicans who rejected it were beholden to an argument by anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist that the measure was tantamount to a tax increase.

“All of the House Republicans were disproportionately affected by the Norquist group on the issue of tax reform,” said Gregg, now a senior adviser at New Mountain Capital LLC. Ryan “clearly was the leader” of House Republicans in setting the terms of a grand debt bargain, said Andy Stern, a panel member and Democrat.

Ryan, now Republican Mitt Romney’s vice presidential running mate, was joined by Representatives David Camp of Michigan, Jeb Hensarling of Texas and four Democrats in opposing a blueprint that would have reduced the federal debt by $3.8 trillion through a three-to-one mix of spending cuts and tax revenue increases. Ryan’s support would have likely drawn votes from Camp and possibly Hensarling and made it all but impossible for the president to reject a plan created by his own self- appointed commission.

The total debt is down to 2006 levels and has been going down for 3 years. In 2006 it was going up!

Where did all of this debt come from anyway? Reagan, Bush, and bush/cheney are responsible for 94% of our national debt.

Class warfare? Warren Buffet has said that class warfare is real, and his class is winning.

What the President said in the Middle East and France was true but it was not an apology. Too bad you could not bring yourselves to face that. Factchck.org did. Politfact did as have several other factcheck groups. They were able to speak the truth.

The president should have slapped the Saudi King right in the face, and said " you may be a KING in your land, but I'M THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Now down on your knees before me, or I'll have my military kill every man, woman, child, goat and dog in your flyspeck of a country!"

That would have sure showen the strength of the US, and all countries would have respected us, and sent us rich presents, of course.

InMyView - that is a mistake, regardless of party, that America made. Atoning for that mistake is what we do. The Vietnam Memorial will never heal that wound, but it is an offering. It is up to you to take it or leave it. But don't translate that into today's political environment. Democrats are the ones that continually work for benefits for veterans, acknowledgement for their superior representation of this country, and money to provide safety for the troops. It is the GOPTP that want to continually cut funding for safety, medical care, and other needs of those in combat, and of those returning from battle.

And the truth is that if it was up to Obama, we'd still be there. The only reason we're out is because the Iraq government wouldn't let us stay. And Obama did escalate the war in Afghanistan considerably. How well do you think that is working out?

That, was a mistake that we also recovered from, and it took direct challenges to his administration. Come to find out, democrats and all those opposed to war should have stood stronger. When you are faced with neighbors willing to turn you in for treason, you get careful in your objections. If you doubt that, ask the Germans, or more closer to home, ask the US WWII population and their fighting the government on sending the Japanese to concentration camps.

The country was in a war frenzy after 911, and if you look at the congressional vote count for approval of the Iraq war, you'll see that very very few in congress didn't support it. Of course, the democrats later turned tail and tried to deny any responsibility. "But but but Bush lied to me ... I didn't know ..." Bull@!$%#! I stood out loud, clear and strong against the war. Members of congress had a responsibility to do the same or accept responsibility for their actions. GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!

Ya see, there was this little problematic piece of legislation passed by Bush that threatened Americans with detention at Gitmo for speaking against Bush. His speech of 'for or against us' will go down in history. Thank God, we still had WWII vets alive speaking out against it, otherwise his chest thumping may have taken full control. Now what would you know about WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the other conflicts after? Careful with you answer, I happen to know a thing to two about the military, including the warning from Eisenhower on the military industrial complex. I heard about the spitting and was apprehensive when I came back, but there was none of that.
Those were radical times and many people did things that they later regretted. We are all doing our best to put that behind us.

Support the troops. They did not make the policy. It was those chickenhawks bush/cheney and their lies. 935 verified lies in fact.

Bush/cheney lied 935 times before the Iraq Invasion. They lied to Congress too! That is how they got the Democrats to vote for the war. When the truth came out the Democrats changed their position.

Do you remember cheney's hand written note saying Plame was fair game? Are you ok with him outing a CIA agent?

In their short work week before heading out of town, Senate Republicans decided to kill the Veterans Jobs Corp Act, 58-40.

The Veterans Jobs Corp Act would have created new job-training programs to help veterans find work in targeted fields such as national park conservation, historic preservation projects, police work and firefighting, among others.

Actually, then Senator Obama did NOT vote against going to war with Iraq. Although several democrats claimed to be against that war, there were very few who actually voted against it and Obama was NOT one of them. Maybe he was absent that day. It's easy to check the Congressional roll call vote.

President Obama is the statesman I want to represent America, not Mitt Romney. Romneys do not relate to struggling Blue Collar Americans and what Veterans go through, working Americans, and the "47 per cent ters". None his family are currently officers or enlisted. They don't know "how" it is. For those of you still thwarting President Obama is Muslim -you are ignorant in thinking so. But -go an vote Mitts as is is reflective of the divide republicans want in America.

When President Obama took office, he put the cost of Shrub's TWO unfunded wars in the budget-- usually when you do something like that it reflects on the books. Oh, and don't forget the UNFUNDED Medicare Part D program. I agree that Mutt will solve the unemployment situation-- start another war or two and send everybody elses' kids to fight them. And while the boys are at war, the women can play Rosie the Riveter.

The debate was not about illicit drug use. It was on foreign policy. It seems that Mitt, the Draft Dodger hasn't a clue what foreign policy has to do other than proselytizing for his church in a foreign country.

Accusing BA of apologizing is the cheapest of cheap shots. Unfortunately Americans overseas made some bad mistakes, blunders which reflected on the entire country in the eyes of many. BA had enough courage to admit what was wrongly done and take responsibility, but he didn't grovel or apologize as MR would have people believe. Big difference to admit mistakes and take responsibility. Sorry Mitt, you loose by underestimating the intelligence of Americans, and I particularly resent yr cheep tactics.

The concept of flying planes into buildings, per your citation, was a concept from Australia !

Present something credible and I will read further ... thus far, you have failed. But then again, you libs will try to crucify Romney for something Bush did or did not do ..... while at the same time giving Obama a "pass" on ignoring attacks on our Libyan embassy in April, 2012, and June, 2012 while turning down requests for additional security ! The Obama administration FAILED to provide adequate security for Ambassador Stevens and that is why he is dead ! Even the facility itself, did not meet standards set by our government.

jim: "The Obama administration FAILED to provide adequate security for Ambassador Stevens and that is why he is dead ! Even the facility itself, did not meet standards set by our government."

I don't think you really want to go there, Jim, because--as Biden pointed out--Congressman Ryan and House Republicans voted to cut the federal budget for State Department security around the world.

"This lecture -- on embassy security, the congressman here cut embassy security in his budget by three hundred million dollars below what we asked for," Biden said.

                              Whoopsie!

Hey Hammer.....Biden was "hammered" in the Wall Street Journal last Sunday for his comments. Did you not pay attention to the Congressional "hearings?" When asked 'point blank,' Charlene Lamb said that money (funding) had nothing to do with it. Get informed.

Have we all forgotten the photos of Odumbo bowing down to the Middle Eastern Kings and Sultans?

He is distrusted by Asian and European leaders. He is treated with scorn my the Middle Eastern and Arabic potentates.

                                Great job of leadership.
