Hispanic voters continue to say they prefer President Obama by wide margins over Republican nominee Mitt Romney amid signs that the race is tightening among the broader electorate, according to new data in a NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll.

Obama leads Romney 70 percent to 25 percent among likely Latino voters (and 69 percent to 23 percent among registered voters), a slight uptick for Romney from the 70 percent to 25 percent lead the president held a month ago.

But Latino enthusiasm has ticked up since last month, up from its lows earlier this cycle but still not yet on par with Latino enthusiasm for Obama in 2008.
More Hispanics than last month said they are either a 9 or 10 (on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest) on a measure of their enthusiasm for this election. Sixty-eight percent of likely Latino voters rated their enthusiasm at that level, up from 59 percent last month. But that is off from the 76 percent who said they were in that highest-interest group at this time four years ago. And it is below the 76 percent who are 9s and 10s in the wider NBC/WSJ poll.

The debates appear to have had little impact with Latinos in the poll, which was conducted entirely after the second presidential debate. Just 14 percent said they are now more likely to vote for Romney while 48 percent said it made them more likely to vote for Obama, and 35 percent said it made no difference.
A total of 13 percent of Latinos said they have already voted – either in person or by mail. Another 10 percent said they plan to vote before Election Day.

There were some drops for the president, however. His approval rating is still very strong at 66 percent, but it’s down from the sky-high 73 percent he enjoyed last month. On the economy, Obama’s approval declined slightly from 68 percent to 63 percent. And even his favorability saw a small decline from 74 percent positive last month to 69 percent this month.
The problem for Romney, however, continues to involve a severe image problem with Hispanics. A solid majority – 57 percent – of Hispanic voters said they had a negative view of the former Massachusetts governor, while just a quarter – 26 percent – had a positive impression of Romney.
After Monday's third and final debate there will be exactly two weeks before the election and all signs are pointing to a very tight race, including the latest NBC News/ WSJ poll. The Daily Rundown panel discusses.
In fact, almost half – 45 percent – had a “very negative” impression of Romney, up from 35 percent last month.
The NBC/WSJ poll, including the Hispanic oversample, was conducted from Oct. 17 to Oct. 20 and has a margin of error of +/- 6.8 percent among likely voters and +/- 5.7 percent among registered voters.
EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated Obama's economic approval as declining from 66 percent to 61 percent. It was actually a decline from 68 percent to 63 percent.

While one would think it was just the old fat rich guys - it is scary to listen to younger and poor Americans thinking that Romney is the cure. Instead of actually researching what Romney/Ryan. The race is so close because each day women and minorities are realizing that the only candidate who can offer us a better economy and more jobs is Mitt Romney. Obama has bragged that he has deported more Illegals in 3 years than Bush did in 8. Obama promised comprehensive immigration reform within his first year. Never, to my knowledge, even submitted a request for an immigration reform bill. Didn't really try to help the Latinos until this year because he needs their votes, so he rushed out a Presidential Executive Order. How many Latinos were killed with the Obama Administrations "fast and furious" blunder.

Every single person I speak to who voted for McCain and is voting for the re-election of President Obama has said that their #1 reason is - Romney's stance on supporting the draft during Vietnam. This has made so many people livid; that Romney would go out of his way to support the draft and then not serve.
He went to France while our school friends and brothers went to Vietnam.
They have no respect for Romney and they don't him anywhere NEAR our foreign policy. They know damn well his sons didn't serve in the military after 9/11 either.

Thinking about tonight’s debate, I can’t help but to imagine how a Republican president would be faring right now if he or she had been responsible for hunting down and killing Bin Laden once and for all.
Given how voters inappropriately assign foreign policy and military acumen to Republicans, and how Republicans tend to exploit any narrow opening they can find, I really believe that Hypothetical Republican President X would be 10 points ahead in the polls right now, regardless of the economic landscape, based solely on killing Bin Laden.
President Obama, on the other hand, received a modest four or five point bump in the polls after the fact, and it’s clearly not helping him in the campaign very much despite running against a Republican foreign policy neophyte.
I don’t know exactly why there’s such a disparity, but I can’t help but to think it has something to do with the phenomenon I wrote about yesterday — the Republican “fair weather patriotism.” Democrats tend to give credit where credit is due when it comes to a Republican achievement or support in a time of crisis, while Republicans only support their own kind.
After eight years of the Bush team’s bungling and botched hunt for Bin Laden, Barack Obama tracked down in just over two years and got him. That’s significant. That’s historic. But you wouldn’t know it when talking with Republicans.

The right using numbers on welfare and food stamps make that a battle cry against Obama but not bothering to rationalize why they're high. The last 6 months of Bush's presidency we lost 6 million jobs and they continued to bleed at 800,000 a month until Obama was able to turn the tide. Of course when unemployment ran out those still unable to find jobs would turn to food stamps and such. Democrats remember who created the problem and who turned it around. Republicans suffering from Romnesia never will admit it even if they remember.

Beyond elimination the deduction you just listed as your obligations/lifestyle (his bucket is too small for your expenses) he will also reduce Federal programs forcing some of them to be funded by the States thus causing the States to increase taxes.
It looks like we need the help of women, Latinos, LGBTs and Blacks to save this election for President Obama. I hope everyone who says they will vote, actually does vote. If that happens, it should be an easier win for the President. It's still going to be a tough road but I really believe the President will win re-election. I just can't fathom romney winning. It'll be the worst nightmare ever imagined.

Dennis - Not true, Romney did not say he would eliminate mortgage deductions for all taxpayers. He said he would look at cutting the deductions and loop holes for the wealthy. As for you saying he would also cut federal programs, I believe he said he would audit all programs and get rid of the ones that were no longer needed or were considered non-essential. I believe months ago you agreed with me that ALL federal programs should be reviewed and either ended or consolidated or at least made more effective.
Romney/Ryan have said they will revise the tax codes, and audit federal programs. I have not heard Obama mention one thing that he would do to cut government spending or revising the tax codes, other than to say TAX the rich more, make the rich pay their fair share and other class warfare BS.
What is Obama's plan for the next 4 years? Instead of knocking Romney all the time, Obama should say what his programs and plans are for the future. BTW, we can better manage our taxes at the lower level (state and local) than we can at the Federal level.

The Romney/Ryan plan is to cut a total of $4.8 trillion from our income/tax revenue but he will not tell us how he will pay for it other than close loopholes without details.
Their 20% tax cuts for all tax brackets just for those making over $200,000/$250,000 totals $2.7 trillion over 10 years. Romney says he will pay for those tax cuts by closing loopholes. However there are only $1.7 trillion worth of loopholes in total (if you eliminate all of them) that can be closed.
So where does his plan get the $1 trillion to cover the gap?
Obama has stated times that he wants to reduce spending by $4 trillion over 10 years.

Dennis - It really depends on who is trying to analyze the so called plan. We both know, and Ryan has said, that it will be up to the Congress to write the bill and revise the tax codes, because the President doesn't write the bills he only tells Congress what he wants. (That was Obama's problem, he felt he had a mandate for his programs, regardless of what Congress wanted). You, I or anyone else, can really say if the programs mentioned and the tax/revenue plan outlined will work or not but what we have had the last 4 yrs sure hasn't helped much. It's time we try something else, and all I have seen Obama propose is raise taxes on the rich.
I have said, I don't know if Romney is the answer but I do know Obama's ideas haven't worked (He has been one of, if not the most, divisive Presidents in my time) . It is time for a change and if Romney don't get this country turned around then he too will be a one term President. One of Obama's biggest problems is he lacks leadership and refuses to accept responsibility for his failures and plays the blame game.

Dennis - You know as well as I do that the President does not get everything he wants and of course he will state certain conditions and guidelines. The important thing is that he will consult with members of Congress (something Obama did very little of) and come up with something close to what he wants. Romney knows that he needs to show leadership by working with Congress. Once Congress writes and passes a bill the President's options are to sign it into law or veto it and direct Congress to continue working on it.
Maybe he won't get his tax plan without making concessions but that is where leadership comes into play. His campaign plans are just that plans. I still have not seen any plans from Obama for the next 4 years.

Let's say there was a group of politicians (Republicans) that want to pass a law that allows police to stop (let's say someone that looks just like you) at any time and ask them (they are citizens and have a right to vote) to prove they are American. Dennis - I don't agree, I believe the Senate Democrats will work with Romney if he is elected. I believe we have seen enough of a paralyzed Congress. I believe Romney will be able to work across the aisle and I believe most Democrats in Congress will cooperate and work with the President. That is where LEADERSHIP comes in. Anyway I would sure hope there will be cooperation from Congress, because if not we are really in trouble.

I am dark skinned and live in Arizona, but even though I don't have a drop of Hispanic blood in me, every time I drive my car I expect to be pulled over and questioned about my citizenship just because I am dark skinned and some police officer might think I'm Mexican. I fail to understand how any rational person could look at the first two years of Obama's Presidency and not see how he and Congress stopped the damage and turned the economy around. The improvements slowed down and began crawling along when the current Congress took office. 278 members of Congress have signed the pledge to Grover Norquist which effectively limits their ability to govern in a responsible way and the want to say it is President Obama's fault for not working across party lines. That just defies all logic. They have ignored 2 of his job proposals and offered none of their own, even thou they campaigned on jobs, jobs, jobs. It was more like lies, lies, lies. Dennis in Ohio, regardless of who wins the election, taxes will increase in 2013 unless drastic changes are enacted quickly. There are a great deal of tax breaks that are set to expire Dec. 31. I would have hoped that anyone that is voting is smart enough to know that.

Lookingforwardtothefuture - To answer your first question, 10 per hour will not allow you to raise a family. If two adults work, that is still only 40,000 per year and no way to afford reliable child care. As was pointed out, you do not need to worry about providing health insurance if you have less than 50 employees, so if you are starting up I doubt you have that many. The reason so many small businesses fail is they can not hire workers and make a profit off of them if they are preforming unskilled labor jobs as you mentioned. Why would I go to work for someone else and make them a profit if I can do the job myself and keep more money. Larger companies have the benefit of being seen as more reliable, can advertise, and can move people around to fill vacancies on any given day. They will also charge a price that allows them to pay some benefits.
Once the health bill goes into effect you may have a more difficult time finding people to work for 10.00 an hour depending on what level the government aid kicks in at. I am not sure how students still on their parents plan are going to impact small business. But they probably will not be working full time anyway.
Most small businesses have the start-up capital to go a couple of years without making a profit to allow them to grow their business. Unless of course you have some connections. Look at what it did for Bill Gates.
I don't know what business you are starting, but I wish you success and hope you grow it to the point where you can pay your workers a living wage along with benefits.

But I don't think Carmona wants to win with illegal alien votes. After all, an alien voting has committed a crime- yet no one was arrested. Why? I flew out to Phoenix to investigate–and ended up in jail. That is, I visited the infamous tent prison of Sheriff Joe Arpaio who has led the alien hunt in his state.
But before I broke into Arpaio's prison, I called his political ally, Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce, who sponsored one of the nation’s nastiest ID laws, Prop 200. It requires all new voting registrants to prove they are US citizens.
“How many illegal aliens have actually been registered?” I asked.
Pearce’s PR flak told me, five million. All Democrats too.

Try really examining the policies of both candidates. One will help lift the financial burdens put on the middle class in the Bush administration and the other wishes to continue those policies that help only one segment of the population (the wealthy). Logical fallacy, Spanky.
All of the ex-Confederate states are among the highest population states for African-Americans. Just because the president is going lose almost all of them doesn't mean he isn't going to win 95% of the demographic's vote. It just means that despite the fact that, say, 26% is higher than 5%, they are still a minority.
Similarly, even though Latinos are a large minority in the states you mentioned, it doesn't mean that the president won't win 70% of their vote. The one state where it really comes into focus and the state that should worry right wingers the most is New Mexico, which is now about 42% Latino.
If the Latino percentage in Colorado, Arizona, Texas, and Nevada continues to grow and Republican policies continue to be entirely hostile to Latino, the entire southwest could become like New Mexico, which transitioned from a safe Republican state to a battleground to the safe Democratic state it is now. Texas should be your worst fear. Texas is already 32% Hispanic and rising. If Texas goes safe blue within 10-15 years, there will never be a road for a Republic to win the Electoral College again.

It will continue to get bigger and with new transplants from the midwest and the west coat I can easily see Texas becoming a purple state by 2020. I know my resources are limited, and our citizens are unemployed at a rate of 7.8% (thanks to a record decrease in the participation rate, and an all-time record added to the SSI 'disability' program). In my humble opinion, there must be order and restraint, while blending in common sense and practicality.

After Obama's cessation on deporting young undocumented workers and breaking families apart and more recently on his executive action to grant work permits to potential "Dreamers" I noted... Obama 2012.
JoAnna, A month ago I clearly stated I was in "partisan mode". I will be so until election day. Economically we are making a turn around. We are better than we were 4 years ago, whether you are talking job creation, gas prices, optimism and economic indicators. Things are getting better, best not to let Romney's undisclosed plans explode the deficit.
That being said, that doesn't mean that I have chosen to as some might perhaps imply "drink the Koolaide", worship at Obama's altar etc. I still call things as I see them. The voter supression tactics are blatant. Whether it is misprinting election dates for Spanish speakers, or republican secrataries of states pushing for unequal application of early voting dates, or bill boards, website and ads intentionally trying to misrepresent what is needed to vote, an honest person can see what is going on. Regarding the voting machines, would you sit still if Obama bought a company that manufactured the machines? Would you be outraged that groups were ripping up registration forms if the shoe was on the other foot?

The biggest problem that President Obama has is that his biggest leads are with demographics that are generally considered the least motivated to actually vote. The flip side of that, of course, is that Romney's biggest leads are in demographics that are most motivated to vote.
The single biggest tactical blunder of this campaign was the Obama campaign's inability to get out of the weeds on talking about voucherizing Medicare. They needed to come up with some way to message how devastating the plan would be in a simpler way. Instead, because their explanation has been so complex, Romney's placid lies of denial during the first debate stuck. And old people vote in droves and an election Obama could have easily won by 5% turned competitive again.

No, what is devastating is there is NO money to pay for the vast expansion of this program-NONE. Medicare WILL be eviscerated to pay for the new bureaucracy. You need to do your homework and NOT rely on myopic and manipulative talking points. We are on the brink of economic collapse and in 2013, our unwillingness to cut back spending and have a sane budget WILL result in a global financial collapse. There will no programs for anyone.
Here is the basic and ugly truth: There is not 'no money.' There is simply 'no money' that the right wing is willing to spend. There is a very simple 2 step process that could bring the budget back into balance by 2014.
1.) Allow ALL of the Bush era tax cuts to expire.
2.) Reduce Federal Spending by about 8%. That brings the Budget into balance. The next step is to create enough of a surplus to buy down the FOREIGN debt in order to get rid of the interest. Foreign debt accounts for about 38% of the national debt.
The rest of the debt is held by American citizens and doesn't carry with it interest in the manner that people are accustomed to thinking about interest. It's also structured in the form of notes, bonds, and so forth that don't mature for quite some time in many cases.
At any rate, the only real barrier to balancing the budget in this nation is Grover Norquist. As soon that the right wing makes up its mind to get serious about addressing the deficit and the debt, it will get done.

In our state (WA) all you have to do is have a driver's license or permit to vote. You do NOT have to be a US citizen to get a license and since it is a valid form of ID, you get to register to vote! And they do-in droves. Why do dems depend upon sleazy and dishonesty to get their candidates? It is a chronic and perennial problem.

the funny thing is - to my disappointment - Obama has done little in the area of gun control. The NRA just likes to run around shouting about how the sky is falling, the sky is falling. mainline girl--I was talking to a friend a while back who shared the story that her daughter is losing her job---the facility is being relocated to another state and she doesn't want to move. Her son-in-law is on his wife's health insurance and has a chronic illness that requires costly medicines each month. I said to my friend---I'll bet you're all supporting President Obama because your son-in-law will be able to get healthcare since they can't deny his pre-existing condition. They aren't. I can understand the 1% voting for Romney but I don't get why many will support him against their own self interest.

TG - I can sympathize with Steeler's story, however that only 1 of the three items out of 2,000 pages In OHC. By the way I did had a four year old girl that died of a Congenital Heart Disorder. These happened while I was let go form one job and did get Cobra to maintain her on the Policy. I was lucky that two other companies offered me Insurance and they would wave the existing condition off. I decided to let Cobra cover her but unfortunately we did loose her that year.
