NBC/WSJ poll: Presidential contest now tied

As Obama and Romney prepare for the debate on foreign policy Monday night in Florida, new polls emerge showing the candidates are in a 47-47 percent tie among likely voters. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Heading into Monday's final debate and with just over two weeks until Election Day, President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney are now tied nationally, according the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Obama and Romney both get 47 percent among likely voters in the latest edition of the poll, conducted entirely in the aftermath of the second presidential debate last Monday. In the previous national NBC/WSJ poll, which was conducted before debate season began, the president held a narrow, three-point lead over his GOP challenger, 49 percent to 46 percent.

But among the wider pool of all registered voters in this new survey, Obama is ahead of Romney by five points, 49 percent to 44 percent.

Read the full poll (.pdf)

"We definitely have a barn burner," says Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted this survey with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart.

White House adviser David Axelrod discusses the latest numbers reflecting a statistical tie in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Hart adds, "The election is close, close, close."

Voters more comfortable with Romney
What appears to have benefited Romney, especially after the first two presidential debates, is that voters are more comfortable with him.

A combined 47 percent of registered voters say they are either optimistic and confident or satisfied and hopeful that Romney would do a good job as president -- up five points since the last NBC/WSJ poll. By comparison, Obama's percentage stands at 50 percent on this question, which is unchanged from the previous survey.

In addition, heading into Monday's foreign-policy debate, Romney trails Obama by just three points (44 percent to 41 percent) on which candidate would be better commander in chief, which is down from the president's eight-point edge on this question last month.

And Romney's favorable/unfavorable rating has slightly improved -- from 41 percent favorable/44 percent unfavorable in the last poll, to 43 percent favorable/44 percent unfavorable now.

Obama's score stands at 49 percent favorable/43 percent unfavorable.

Growing economic optimism
But if voters are becoming more comfortable with Romney, they also are becoming more optimistic about the economy.

A panel of experts visits Meet the Press to discuss foreign policy and the 2012 presidential campaigns.

Forty-five percent believe the economy will improve in the next 12 months. That's up one point from the last poll and a whopping 18 points since July. What's more, 41 percent think the country is headed in the right direction, which is the highest mark on this question since June 2009.

Overall, Obama's approval ratings are unchanged from the last survey -- 49 percent approve of his overall job performance, 46 percent approve of his handling of the economy and 49 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy.

Macro-messaging vs. micro-messaging
Despite this growing economic optimism, however, Romney holds a six-point lead over Obama (46 percent to 40 percent) on which candidate would better deal with the economy. That's up three points (45 percent to 42 percent) since the last poll.

Romney also has the advantage on jobs and unemployment (46 percent to 39 percent) and the federal budget deficit (48 percent to 35 percent).

And by a four-point margin (45 percent to 41 percent), voters think Romney is better prepared to create jobs and improve the economy over the next four years.

But Obama leads on almost all other issue and character-trait questions -- being easy going and likable (57 percent to 25 percent), dealing with issue of concern to women (53 percent to 25 percent), being compassionate enough to understand average people (53 percent to 29 percent), looking out for the middle class (52 percent to 36 percent) and dealing with Medicare (46 percent to 37 percent).

David Gregory analyzes this morning's Meet the Press with a preview of the third and final debate on foreign policy between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

"Romney is dominating the macro-messaging of the economy," Hart says, "and Obama is dominating the micro-messaging" -- on things like women's issues, compassion and likeability.

The demographic breakdown
Taking a look at the key demographic groups in this election, Obama leads among African Americans (92 percent to 5 percent), Latinos (winning about seven in 10 of them), women (52 percent to 41 percent) and voters 18-34 (61 percent to 33 percent).

Romney, meanwhile, has the edge among seniors (60 percent to 35 percent), whites (55 percent to 38 percent) and men (47 percent to 45 percent).

But Romney's gender gap narrows when you move from registered voters to likely voters -- Obama's lead with women shrinks to eight points (51 percent to 43 percent), and Romney's advantage with men grows to 10 points (53 percent to 43 percent).

The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted Oct. 17-20 among 1,000 registered voters (including 300 cell phone-only respondents) and 816 likely voters. The margin of error is plus-minus 3.1 percentage points for the sample of registered voters and plus-minus 3.43 percentage points for the sample of likely voters.

Given NBC's oft-demonstrated pro-Obama bias, it ought to stay out of polling if it wants to cultivate some semblance of being a news organization.

Seriously, do we have to let these people vote?

Yet another example of NBC playing up this election as tight when no electoral poll shows Romney with any chance to win!! The major media still has to sell ads, and get hits on their websites so they ballyhoo things that are very misleading in pursuit of the almighty dollar. In doing so, they reject their duty to the American people to inform them on issues they need to know about it. The country is going to hell in a hand basket yet the media refuses to do it's due diligence in investigating why. That is why I seldom pay any attention to the MSM. They simple do NOT inform us as they should. Better they should go off the air and close up shop for all the good they're doing to the American people!!

Here is news to bite on libs! Real Clear Politics.com, the organization that averages all the reputable national polls has just announced they have Romney leading in the polls in states totaling 209 electoral votes and Obama leading in states with 199 electoral votes. 131 electoral votes in states now counted as too close to call are up for grabs, an increase in the number of swing states, rather than the narrowing to 9 only that MSNBC commentators are prone to focus on. Seems that confirms the trend to Romney found by other polls lately!

I didn't believe any of those polls when they had President Obama leading by a wide margin. And I don't believe them now. We are being manipulated by a cynical press and corporate controlled media who have succeeded in doing what they wanted too. And that is creating a horse race where none existed. And for the purpose of selling us news as entertainment to buttress their political agendas. Convincing the people that their choices are fickle and can change on a silly whim like staged debates and canned ads. What a joke!

Reality is there is not one single undecided voter in the country. 100% of the electorate has decided who they are going to vote for. These latter polls were designed to give the voting public the illusion of a sporting contest of sorts. Tallying wins and losses by both candidates like they had been in some kind of definitive athletic combat. When in reality real people don't wildly change positions or opinions from week to week like that. Especially when nothing of significance happens. And nothing did in any of those debates or conventions. People knew what they both sides were then and now.

Either President Obama is going to win by 52% to 48%, or Mitt Romney is going to win by 52% to 48%. And that is just the way the electorate splits up today. My bet is that the President will win it. Because there is no fundamental reason for those who voted for him to defect into Romney and the GOPs massive blizzard of lies and deception. Many of Obama's supporters don't like everything he does. Myself included. We really wish the GOP was a viable and credible alternative for us. But they aren't. And they don't have a chance to claim voters like me until they are chastened and changed back into a reality party.

When all the polling organizations do is fudge the facts by intentionally over or under sampling massive groups, everyone should view them with raised eyebrows. They aren't lying. But they are misrepresenting the scale of their samples to create statistical illusions. For example; they will sample 2000 people in New York, 2000 in Wyoming, 2000 in Ohio and 2000 in Utah. Then say they have a representative sample of the USA. When in fact they have created a very false statistical scaled model between Ohio/New York and Wyoming and Utah in terms of population density and national voter intent. They are not telling any of us the whole truth. And they are lying when they say they weight that kind of bias out. Truth is they intentionally build it in! And they do it both political ways to get the results they want. And to artificially create a tense and interesting process.

The last time I saw intentional facts fudging like this, along with such a weird trajectory of the electorate, was when President Reagan was undervalued and underestimated in 1980. And he handily beat President Carter. The pollsters and media did it to a likable Reagan against an unlikable Carter. And they are doing it again to a likable Obama against an unlikable Romney. The people saw right through it. They had already made up their minds. And the people obliterated their predictions on election night. The conservative owned corporate media are grotesquely overvaluing Mitt Romney at this point. And the proof is in the pudding for that statement. If they really thought this election was even close. The GOP and its surrogates would not be spending massive amounts of money on voter Intimidation, voter suppression, and flat out career threatening cheating. They know they don't have the numbers to win an honest election. In fact, they know it would be an Obama landslide if left to fair means. That alone is the biggest example of how badly they could really lose this election. And when a Mormon Newspaper (Utah Tribune) endorses President Obama over its native son. You know its not really as close as the lying pollsters and pundits are saying.

What about Asian Americans? Is this group too tiny to even mention? Hey Asian Americans! Aren't we being neglected? I am for Romney this time. I think Obama is too cocky and all his and democrat's policies are for other minorities but for Asian Americans. In fact the Republican Policies are better for Asian Americans. So, hey, let us all go out and vote for the candidate whose policy benefits us the most.

That's because Asians believe in standing on their own two feet, unlike the blacks and hispanics that Obama has been pandering to. They also believe in family values and the sense of 'face' (for those of you who do not understand this, I doubt you ever will) and are not likely to bring dishonor to their family by feeding at the public trough.

There are 5 questions that I would like to ask Romney and Obama on
Iran, China (2), Terrorism, and OPEC in debate # 3.
      1) Will your administration be content with an Iran having nuclear weapon rather than try to stop Iran if that means using military forces?
      2) How will you balance trades with China? And how will you level the playing field with China for US companies?
      and more...

I like your two questions very much. As an Asian American myself, my question No.3 will be 3) Will your administration stop taking my money and give it to those who don't work for themselves and only complain? Also, as an Asian American, one big piece of our american dream pie was in the medical profession -- bc as you know, Asians are weak in Professional Sports industry, in Entertainment industry, or in Law practice industry. But we are strong in medical industry because this is the industry that relies on good brain + hard work. But Obama, you came in and eliminated this only industry that we Asian's American Dream. When the Professional Sports and Entertainment Industries in which Blacks, Hispanics and Whites are strong, the dream is still alive. But the dream in medical profession is all but gone thanks to your Obamacare. So, this medical profession and industry will be increasingly dominated by foreign countries, innovating and discovering new treatments, etc. So, my question for Obama is, 4) Why did you eliminate practically the only industry where the Asians have a chance competing well? Why are you a president for Hispanics and Blacks, but ignore all other minorities?

Because that's another way they can bias the polls.

You better start looking into this numbers you are seeing because there are groups of people being mis represented. I am seeing lower income 50k or less polled less no Idea why, but when election day comes I can tell you right now more than 50% will be people making under 50k a year.

Your're right JD except your analysis is not correct. Instead of incomes you should be looking at Party affiliation. There are poor Republicans as poor Democrats. These polls are WRONG because they all over sample Democrats by +7. Obama is in REAL trouble.

All the Romney/Ryan has to do to balance their tax plan, is to convince Chinese workers to contribute to US payroll taxes for US social security and US medicare taxes.

Tied? There is no such thing as a tie!

The main stream media is totally full of -s h i t-. All of them engage in propaganda to boost ratings for the debates.

After Obama is reelected, I hope all of there ratings drop to 0. There has to be a better way of getting reliable news.

President Obama will win, it will be a tight race I don't know why...

After the disastrous debate Romney had where he made a fool of himself about Libya...

Where when asked about pay equality Romney lied about his "binders" of Women, the Women's groups already had those "binders" ready for whoever became Governor, that's a fact and Romney knows it, and he never has answered the question if he believes in the Lilly Ledbetter fair pay act!

We all know what the true Romney believes when he is around his fellow 1%, by the 47% remarks, and that he really doesn't believe there is anything to be done about the Israeli and Palestinian problems, just hope for the best.

After the President is reelected watch Fox news, GOP/baggers whine and cry about voter fraud or some kind of cheating...

                  O&JOE Forward not back!

In the end even with a good republican turn out Romney may win the popular vote and still lose the electoral college. Then watch all hell break lose!! :P

Obama will not win Ohio - too many coal miners pissed off at him for the lies about the political ad showing coal miners on a stage with Romney - saying the miners were coerced into doing ad with Romney - not the truth - they sent letter to the POTUS telling him to pull the ad - he didn't pull it for a long time - the new campaign ad came out on Friday - miners calling Obama a liar for airing the ad. Bottom line - coal miners, middle class, upper middle class and seniors will not vote for O BOMB O - so he can chalk up Florida, Ohio and Virginia as far as electoral votes are concerned. He is done - stick a fork in him.

Larry - how about you RE-DO YOUR math. Obama will not win in Ohio, Virginia, or Pennsylvania. Time for him to move on. Our economy cannot withstand another 4 years with the economy - Obama should start packing up now.
