Clinton lauds Obama, says economy not 'hunky dory' but on the mend

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Former President Bill Clinton took supporters here on a stroll down "fact lane" Friday night, passionately making the case that economy is well on its way to recovery.

"People don't feel it yet. I get that. The deficit was going down three years in a row before a majority of the American people would say 'Ya, it's going down.'  People didn't feel it," Clinton told a crowd of more than 2,000 people. "And the damage was much deeper this time around.  I'm telling you, we are coming out of this, we are moving in the right direction. If you stay with this policy and you stay with this president and you elect Tammy Baldwin, you will feel it."

The comments come one day after GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign jumped on Clinton's remark that the economy is "not fixed."

At a rally late Thursday, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan said he agreed with the former president, and used it as an attack against the current administration's economic record.

But in remarks that lasted nearly one hour, Clinton was careful to say the economy is not "hunky dory" but stressed that the nation's economy was on the mend.

In recent weeks, Clinton has been one of President Barack Obama's most active surrogates, headlining rallies in nearly all the key battleground states. His appearance here at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay was also in support of Democratic senate candidate, Rep. Tammy Baldwin. The high profile race in the Badger State has gotten plenty of interest from outside groups who have poured millions into advertising in the state, to which Clinton warned supporters to "follow the money."

The 42nd president was particularly critical of the Super PAC Crossroads, run by Karl Rove, a former aide to President George W. Bush. "You all remember Karl Rove, don't you? Now he was part of a great economic record," Clinton said to laughter. "He's out there plugging for Gov. Romney and plugging for Tommy Thompson, and if you liked the economics of the previous 8 years, you will just love what they do. You gotta follow the money sometimes, folks."

Clinton also used his trip here to reflect on some of the pleasant memories from his own time in office, even briefly addressing his legacy. "When you have more yesterdays than tomorrows, there are only 3 things that matter: Are people better off than when you quit than when you started? Do children have a brighter future and are things coming together or being torn apart?" he said.

"The rest of it is all background music."

Iacocca: America needs a turnaround, which is why I'm voting Romney

Former Chrysler Corp. chairman Lee Iacocca says that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney gets his vote in November. (Olivia Gatti / Associated Press)

I've seen a lot of situations that needed a turnaround in my time, and I know one when I see one. Trust me, America needs a turnaround.

America is in deep trouble. After four years, economic growth is still anemic, our annual deficits were not cut in half as promised, and our staggering $16 trillion federal debt hangs over us and our kids like the plague. Our people are hurting, they can't find jobs, they have lost a major part of their net worth, the number of Americans living in poverty is at unacceptable levels, and we just aren't doing the things that would get our country back on the right track.

Like any turnaround it must begin by honestly facing our problems; hope and speeches won't get our people back to work. It will require experienced leadership that can create and lead policy change that will enable a more robust and competitive America. We need leadership that understands that government, just like American families, can't continue to spend beyond its means. We must find leadership that won't pander to the people, but rather will speak honestly to them about our situation, explaining in simple terms what we have to do to get back on the right track. And we need leadership that can bring us together in a sense of shared responsibility so that we can move forward as a team. All of us. As Americans.

America needs new leadership

Mitt Romney has successfully led both public and private sector turnarounds. He is a bright and successful man; he is a good man, a caring man, a man of integrity, family and faith. Importantly, he recognizes we are in a tough situation. With dozens of years of real world experience in the public and private sectors, he knows what he's talking about. His policies will enable a stronger America, one in which all Americans can share. He was groomed and trained for this moment.

The future of our country is at stake

If you are out of work or worried about your job, having trouble making ends meet, are worried about your kids' future or your own, or if you just have a nagging sense that as Americans we can do better than this, it's time to wake up and stop just hoping it will all work out in a few more years. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it won't!

It's time for straight talk.

I'm asking you to vote for change that will get us moving in the right direction, and to be ready to be part of the solution. Everything depends on it. We don't have time to waste. It's time to make America great again.

Vote for Mitt Romney for president.

Lets get real people this is not an election about "The economy" and the complaints regarding the President isn't either. To be perfectly honest if it were then the people would have been in the streets after having voted for "Change" when the "economy" hit the fan! Those people who voted for the president almost four years ago would have returned to the street to tell him "WE have your back" and then what would the nay-sayers & divisionist have done - THEIR JOBS (which weren't to be argumentative & dismissive or spend ALL their time preparing to ousting him from the office!)

The "economy" is improving & not only do they not want to see, hear or own that they want to continue their dismissive rant about it and the President! Telling us that Mitt Romney can change that - as the "PROMOTER OF JOBS," yet they & he refuse to OWN THE "BUSINESS MODEL" he has/does PROMOTE!

Let's ask the people @ Sensata Technologies about that "Business Model" shall WE. they were working for a PROFITABLE NON-UNION company and then BAIN (you know the company that Mitt Romney is the major share-holder in & made/makes million's of dollars from that he OFF-SHORES! Bain purchased this company in 2010 and the executives called them in and told them they were SELLING TO CHINA & that they would have to train the Chinese workers taking their jobs and as they did the company lowered and removed the AMERICAN FLAG!

Mitt Romney says OUR PRESIDENT is not tough on China & TRADE PRACTICES, yet it was OUR PRESIDENT that sued them and saved more jobs in Freeport, IL as the unfair trade practices threatend another business there & OUR PRESDIENT WON - saving the jobs at the Tire Factory there!

When I see people holding signs with "NOOSES" drawn on them, chairs HANGING IN TREES, T-Shirts reading "Put the White back in the White House!," read & hear people saying things like MONKEY & CALLING 1/2 OF AMERICANS LEECHES and participating in tactics and rhetoric meant to encourage fear, separation & exclusion - I KNOW WHAT THIS IS REALLY ABOUT!

Before I get the "there they go with the race card" dismissive rant, I say I AM A CHILD OF GOD & PART & PARCEL OF THE HUMAN RACE - PLEASE COME JOIN IT! I was born in 1963 and there was STILL SEGREGATION at that time in America and my sister in 1965 when HOSES, DOGS & BILLY-CLUBS WERE BEING USED ON PEOPLE IN THE STREETS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA so I hear, see & react to this in the ONLY WAY A GOOD AMERICAN WOULD - I prepare to fight by the tide of BIGOTRY & DIVISION that STINKING THINKING DENOTES!

I am an AMERICAN and even though Thomas Paine did not truly include me at the time of his "Commom Sense" approach given to the PEOPLE to encourage CHANGE, which ultimately started the REVOLUTION that made this here AMERICA, I benefit from the DEMOCRACY that was forged out of it!

Mitt Romney/GOP/Republican Party (such as it is presently) & those constitutes of it that have PLEDGED their not so SECRET WAR on DEMOCRACY & PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE ME - including the sitting PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA may be able to TELL YOU WITH A STRAIGHT FACE THAT THIS IS ABOUT THE "ECONOMY," but I HEAR THEM LOUD AND CLEAR the way many heard them when they supposedly abolished SLAVERY - only to put in its place JIM CROW, when they said SEPARATE WAS NOT EQUAL passed Brown vs. the Board of Education, yet there is still no Equality or Equitability in our schools or education system, when they claimed to have passed Civil Rights, yet still make the limbo stick a shifting piece to this so called charitable act & lastly when they complain about the institution they initiated WELFARE (Aid to Dependent Families) & call they people who use it the worst names and make a program set up in its entirety to hold those people down & out, but ignore ALTOGETHER THEIR OWN WELFARE SYSTEM (CORPORATE WELFARE) that leaves no have wannabe out, YET LEAD TO THE PROBLEMS IN AMERICA & WITH THE "ECONOMY" THAT THEY NOW CLAIM TO COMPLAIN ABOUT!

This election is about that HYPOCRISY, MENTALITY & HUBRIS they have said it & keep saying it & if you REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT, SEE IT, HEAR IT or STOP IT then YOU HAVE CONDONED IT, but PLEASE DO NOT INSULT MY INTELLIGENCE WHILE YOU DO IT by telling me you BUY IN TO IT BEING ABOUT THE "ECONOMY!"

TO THE BELOVED MIDWEST, FROM THE SOUTH:

I sincerely hope Romney Leaning voters in states outside the BIBLE BELT, will think carefully about what they are really voting for. The bigotry, racism, and hatred here in the south is a lost cause, because of poverty, "old south" money, and low education.

I used to live in Wisconsin. I know the republicans there are a totally different breed than the ones who live in South Carolina. Mr Romney from New Hampshire. Mr Ryan from Wisconsin. Those who support them. You need to take a hard look at the hate that the GOP is festering down here in the south. It is correlated to the hate festering in middle east. GOP festers hate and uses it to their political advantage. That is why a vote for Romney is a vote for war.

all these people voting that the economy hasnt improved...gotta wonder if they voted "no" because theyve actually seen proof for themselves that the economy hasnt improved (or what they think means it hasnt) or if theyre just going on what they keep getting told by those on the news, or romney/ryan at campaign stops, (or their friends that dont know anything more than they do) that the economy "hasnt improved".

not to mention all these people making comments about what theyve been told "liberals" are like. notice they say it with a bit of an attempted humorous spin hoping to get thumbs ups? its obvious they think theyre comedians and have been listening to rush limbaugh (wait for the offended posts saying they dont though).

they try to push the boundary for what offends themselves, let alone what they think shouldnt offend anyone else. that in itself should tell you theyre trying to get away with something.

i live in an area with a lot of coal miners. theyre scared right now. afraid theyre about to get laid off. its scary the things theyre saying about Obama and the EPA, and what they think "cap and trade" is, because theyve been lied to, by ads, and endless numbers fliers in their mailboxes (and recently even hand written postcards from people in other states urging them to vote for romney..i got one too). theyre actually getting told by their bosses to vote for romney or theyll get fired, and theyre even going so far as to fire a few people right now to make the message sink in. this isnt OK. this is bullying, manipulation, and pure workplace terrorism.

yes the economy has improved. this current incarnation of "republicans" are simply just liars, manipulators, and all around evil people, that worship the almighty dollar over everything else. theyd rather quote the things that are "legal for them to do" instead of "whats right for everyone".

pay attention. its not hard.

It's a scary thought if Romney becomes president!!! He will have NO friends or support from other country's. He will take more of our jobs overseas. The middle class will become no more. We will see the great depression and then in four years he will be thrown out because the economy will certainly tank and another democrat will have to come in and try and put us back on our feet again and will not do it fast enough just like what happened to President Obama. He got the shaft from the republicons. They refused to work with him despite what it would do to us American's. They just wanted him to fail. They lied and spread the lies to people. The closet racists that didn't want to see a black president were the first to jump on board. Some were still pissed off because of affirmative action. the rest that follow Romney are considered your typical "Plebs". They are missing a few sparks upstairs, so they are slow in getting truth and knowledge. God knows what voting suppression day will be like. They are so desperate to win they will not only lie but cheat as well. Oh by the way, God was a liberal, if you read the bible you would certainly figure out God didn't believe in Capitalism.

you are a paranoid delusional person. The middle class has been knocked down to poverty levels by Berry. The economy is in the tank just were he wants it and the housing market trashed so George Soros can buy everything up and get the government to dump money into it and he can profit from it. Soros is the puppet master. He has a fist up berrys butt. Redistribution of wealth is just wrong. Taking from one family to give to the other to make everyone equal? Go to freakn work and earn what I have. Stop with the hand outs. The Dem party with Berry at the helm is on a B line for destruction. Plain and simple.

No that would have to be Obama in 2008 and now again in 2012. Hillary Clinton ring a bell? Of course, that's what she gets being "beholden" to Obama for paying off her campaign deficit. You have to remember, Obama paid off Hillary's campaign deficit. Until that is done and under the rug, the Clintons, both, will have to bite their tongues for awhile. Hillary has already said if Obama wins she won't be interested in carrying on (I think that is the same as "carrying the water") in the SOS role.

If the economy is getting better, it has nothing to do with ANY polititians. It's because companies like the one I work for are becoming despearate and re-organizing. They are making less people do more work, and work more hours. They are also reducing the size of their products. Some companies are making better products than overseas companies in order to get more sales.

Clinton is, and always has been a liar. During his administration the economy was good for two reasons. 1. He had BOTH a repblican house and senate. 2. the development of the internet and ".com" businesses. Simpy put, he was in the right place, and the right time. If you look at the rest of his tenure, it was filled with national embarrassments and corruption. Now, because he NEEDS obama to win to set up Hillary for 2016 he will say anything. If his lips are moving, he's lying.

I think the NBC poll says in all! A whopping 65% (100,000 people) have indicated they don't believe the economy is improving, regardless of what Bill Clinton is saying in this article. Sounds more like the results of a poll that would be taken by Fox viewers, not NBC followers. Humm, wonder if that 65% number will be the election breakdown for Romney votes on Nov 6th? Sounds about right!

You can't believe these polls on any given day; they ask 1000 people and base their findings on that. That's like taking 1 opinion per 140,000 people get real. I could ask 1000 people in New York City or 1000 people in Texas and get a completely different out comes.

that s fine, but my aunts SS is going down a little every yr. In another yr and a half her check will be $300 less. I asked her why, she told me that Obamacare took 17 bill from SS. And she voted for him in 08 becasue of him saying all the things that would be better. She is 74. She worked her whole life up to about 5 yrs ago. She could of started collecting yrs before that but chose not to. Now that she is old and cant work not only is she not getting what she put into the system @ 1200 a month, the Gov. is cutting it more. I dont see how these people are better off now than 4 yrs ago. it is getting worse. People dont like Romney becasue of this and that but as jacked up as Washington is, it will take the expertise of Romney to fix this. He doesnt have to have on the job training. And doesnt have to play trial and eror to see how things work. He is a numbers guy and has proven that. Not all of the companies he had worked but that is a small percentage compared to what has. No one is 100%. Berrys record is far from 50%. He is gambling with our money and loosing. Nothing but broken promises.

YOU..."Mr. Clinton"...are THE prime reason the economy TODAY...is in the condition it is in! YOU, Slick Willy, and YOUR hair brained TRADE POLICIES shoved down our collective throats, much as ObamaCare, is THE reason jobs were ALLOWED to be shipped over-the-borders and "off shore! (You freakin' pin-head!)

Now, Ya' wanna talk about exactly what president holds the formula as to how and why the 9/11 terrorists planned and trained and what presidents watch?!?! (And RIGHT under HIS nose?)

Why...it's YOU Slick Willy! You and that bleeding heart liberal socialist agenda filled wife of yours!

Boy you hit the nail on the head. He is Responsible, along with Dodd / Frank. The Democrats had all three Houses 2009 -10, before that The Democrats had The House & The Senate I Think since 2007. Before that, I don't know who was running what? Since Jan. 2011, The Senate was Democrat and President Democrat. The Democrats are always holding everything up.

No budget has been passed in more than 3 years, Harry Reid refuses to vote on anything in The Senate. Looks to me like Our Country is being held hostage. I've changed Party's, from Democrat to Republican, as I can't justify The Democrats Ideology anymore. It's no longer American.

I just read an article that Chris Matthews said, that Debateing Obama, because he's President is Unconstitutional. (I think that definitely is bordering on derangement) what is it with him and The President? I don't think I have ever seen so much "WORSHIPPING" in my life since Elvis.

And this Manufactured Crisis "WAR ON WOMEN" this is the most profitable place in the world for women, Abortions and Birthcontrol is "A Woman's Business", why should taxpayers pay for it. I'm a woman, I never asked anyone to pay for my contraceptives. I've never in my long long life depended on someone else to pay my way. And I'm not rich.

Then theres the Benghazi Cover Up. There is proof that Ambassador begged for additional security, why on earth can't The Obama Administration tell the truth, instead of telling that crazy story of a Video causing everything? The Administration including Obama kept repeating The Video, as if they wanted to instigate trouble over in The Middle East???..........

This is all very serious and I no longer recognize My Own Country. The Media act like there worshipping a King instead of Reporting the news about the Candidates without "BIAS".

I'm VOTING for Romney / Ryan, at least They show me that America is first in Their lifes. That's The President I want for my beloved U.S.A.!
