Clinton lauds Obama, says economy not 'hunky dory' but on the mend

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Former President Bill Clinton took supporters here on a stroll down "fact lane" Friday night, passionately making the case that economy is well on its way to recovery.

"People don't feel it yet. I get that. The deficit was going down three years in a row before a majority of the American people would say 'Ya, it's going down.'  People didn't feel it," Clinton told a crowd of more than 2,000 people. "And the damage was much deeper this time around.  I'm telling you, we are coming out of this, we are moving in the right direction. If you stay with this policy and you stay with this president and you elect Tammy Baldwin, you will feel it."

The comments come one day after GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign jumped on Clinton's remark that the economy is "not fixed."

At a rally late Thursday, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan said he agreed with the former president, and used it as an attack against the current administration's economic record.

But in remarks that lasted nearly one hour, Clinton was careful to say the economy is not "hunky dory" but stressed that the nation's economy was on the mend.

In recent weeks, Clinton has been one of President Barack Obama's most active surrogates, headlining rallies in nearly all the key battleground states. His appearance here at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay was also in support of Democratic senate candidate, Rep. Tammy Baldwin. The high profile race in the Badger State has gotten plenty of interest from outside groups who have poured millions into advertising in the state, to which Clinton warned supporters to "follow the money."

The 42nd president was particularly critical of the Super PAC Crossroads, run by Karl Rove, a former aide to President George W. Bush. "You all remember Karl Rove, don't you? Now he was part of a great economic record," Clinton said to laughter. "He's out there plugging for Gov. Romney and plugging for Tommy Thompson, and if you liked the economics of the previous 8 years, you will just love what they do. You gotta follow the money sometimes, folks."

Clinton also used his trip here to reflect on some of the pleasant memories from his own time in office, even briefly addressing his legacy. "When you have more yesterdays than tomorrows, there are only 3 things that matter: Are people better off than when you quit than when you started? Do children have a brighter future and are things coming together or being torn apart?" he said.

"The rest of it is all background music."

Bill Clinton put us into this mess by passing the Community Re-investment Act during his administration. The housing bubble was created by the CRA and if they had regulated like Bush wanted in 2001 and afterwards, perhaps it would not have had the impact that it had. Barney Frank is an idiot and he was warned by the Republicans (Bush and John McCain) and his arrogance crippled our economy. The facts are there. The CRA was a noble law but it failed miserably because of the lack of regulation. The idea where a large amount of house were being sold to people and the price of these homes skyrocketing to a value far from what they were really worth and allowing people to take out ARM's to purchase these homes was a chemistry worst than someone playing with gasoline near an open flame. It burst. The whole economy fiasco was not all George Bush's fault like the liberal media wants everyone to believe. Do you know that American people have put out 1 trillion dollars of their money to pay for food stamps under obama in 2011. It is amazing! We are all on a train headed for a bridge that just got blown up by the 16 trillion dept that we are in. Wake Up America.

What was it the John F. Kennedy said...Oh yes....

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.." -- Winston Churchill—

Argentina was a prosperous country until some socialist decided to take from the rich and redistribute. Look at Europe today. We are headed down a road which will we will not be able to do a U-turn. God Bless America and not goddam america like some preacher believed

Your broken promises lie at the feet of the do nothing Congress if they don't like the prez bills then create one themselves but its easier for them to do nothing and hope folks like you blame the white house, blame the no compromise tea party for this crap. It is not possible to save the economy with the worlds collapsing situation, but we didn't get driven off the cliff like Robme would do not to speak of his foreign policy foot in mouth habit, he would start a trade war not smart at all. you won't retire with him he wants to raise the retirement age and destroy medicare and ss, think about it.

We should all be so grateful that a man like Mitt Romney takes a stand on both sides of every issue...here are some more flip-flops!

Notice in the last one....he flip-flops on flip-flopping!!!

    ABORTION

    Flip
"I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I believe that since
Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it.
I sustain and support that law and the right of a woman to make that choice." —
Debate with Sen. Edward Kennedy, 1994

"I will preserve and protect a woman's right to choose and am devoted and dedicated to
honoring my word in that regard." — Massachusetts Gubernatorial Debate, 2002

    Flop
"Look, I was pro-choice. I am pro-life. You can go back to YouTube and look at what I
said in 1994. I never said I was pro-choice, but my position was effectively pro-choice.
I changed my position." — Iowa Straw poll debate, 2007

"What I would like to see happen would be for the Supreme Court to say, look, we’re
going to overturn Roe v. Wade and return to the states the authority to decide whether
they want to have abortion or not, state by state. That’s the way it was before
Roe v. Wade. So I am firmly pro-life." — Town hall meeting, Hopkinton, NH, 2011

    HUNTING

    Flip
"I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life."
    — On the campaign trail in Keene, N.H., 2007

    Flop
"Any description of my being a hunter is an overstatement of capability." — Comment to
    a reporter from the Austin American-Statesman, 2007

    RONALD REAGAN

    Flip
"I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to
Reagan-Bush." — Debate with Sen. Edward Kennedy, 1994

    Flop
"When I was running for office for the first time in 1994, I was trying to define who I was….
I’ve said since, and continue to reiterate, that one of my heroes is Ronald Reagan."
    — Q&A with Human Events, 2006

    DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL

    Flip
Romney once said he was in favor of "gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and
honestly" in the military. — Letter to Log Cabin Republicans, 1994

    Flop
"[Don't Ask Don't Tell has] been the policy now in the military for, what, 10, 15 years –
and it seems to have worked. This is not the time to put in major change, a social
experiment, in the middle of a war going on." — Presidential primary debate, 2007

    VIETNAM

    Flip
"I was not planning on signing up for the military. It was not my desire to go off and serve
in Vietnam." — Quoted by the Boston Herald, 1994

    Flop
"I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country
there and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops
that were fighting in Vietnam." — Quoted by the Boston Globe, 2007

    GUN CONTROL

    Flip
"We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts. I support them. I won't chip away at them." — Gubernatorial debate, 2002

"Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts." — Signing ceremony for bill
    banning assault weapons, 2004

    Flop
"I don’t support any gun control legislation, the effort for a new assault weapons ban,
with a ban on semi-automatic weapons, is something I would oppose." — Interview with
    conservative bloggers, 2008

    HEALTH CARE REFORM

    Flip
"I like mandates. Mandates work." — Presidential primary debate, 2008

"I'm proud of what we've done. If Massachusetts succeeds in implementing [Romneycare],
then that will be a model for the nation." — Speech in Baltimore, 2007

    Flop
"At the time I crafted the plan in the last campaign I was asked is [Romneycare] something
that you would have the whole nation do, and I said no. This is something that was
crafted for Massachusetts. It would be wrong to adopt this as a nation." — Presidential
    primary debate, 2011

Bret Baier: "Governor, you did say on camera and in other places, at times you thought
[Romneycare] would be a model for the nation."
Mitt Romney: "You're wrong, Bret." — Fox News interview, 2011

    CLIMATE CHANGE

    Flip
"I believe the world’s getting warmer. I can’t prove that, but I believe based on what I
read that the world is getting warmer. And number two, I believe that humans contribute
to that. ... And so I think it's important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and
greenhouse gases that may well be significant contributors to the climate change and the
global warming that you're seeing." — Town hall meeting, Manchester, NH, June 2011

    Flop
"My view is that we don’t know what’s causing climate change on this planet. And the
idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the
right course for us." — Q&A session, Pittsburg, PA, October 2011

    BUSH TAX CUTS

    Flip
"[R]omney spoke at the 10th annual legislative conference organized by
U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan (D-Lowell) and met with the Massachusetts delegation. ...
Congressional sources said that a point of contention arose when Romney refused to take
a position on Bush’s massive, 10-year tax cut plan.” — Boston Herald, 2003

    Flop
"McCain opposed President Bush’s tax cuts, Romney noted. 'I supported them,' the former
governor said." — Quoted in The State (SC), 2007

    TAX PLEDGES

    Flip
"I'm not intending to, at this stage, sign a document which would prevent me from being
able to look specifically at the revenue needs of the commonwealth. " — Quoted in
    Union-News, Springfield, MA, 2002

"Signing the pledge now sends a very clear message to those in Washington who have
voted against tax relief and for tax hikes that such actions will never grow our regional
and national economies." — Romney spokesman quoted in the Boston Globe, 2007

    FLIP-FLOPPING

    Flip
"I’m a strong believer in stating your position and not wavering." — Comments to NARAL
    Pro Choice Massachusetts, 2002

    Flop
"I changed my position." — Iowa straw poll debate, 2007

Excellent post ! It would be pages long if you included all the lies and distortions for the last 10 years that he has been running for the presidency. I thought maybe it was dementia , but I have come to understand it was deliberate lies, depending on who he is talking to and on which day. OBAMA /BIDEN

Whether the Republicans want to admit it or not, this Country is definitely moving in the right direction...forward. Obama was handed a real mess when he took over office four years ago. Be realistic, it's obviously going to take time to straighten out...there is no quick fix. Appreciate what Obama has done to get this country moving ahead, don't listen to all the crap thrown at us...think for yourselves. Sorry but I'm not weak minded, they aren't going to persuade me into believing that Romney and Ryan are right. It's an insult to our intelligence. Caught on tape, we all heard Romney's true feelings...47%. What more do you need to hear? Right from horses mouth. We all heard and saw it for ourselves. Romney quite blank said he does not care about the middle class, veterans, woman, college students, etc. why would you want this man to run our Country? Isn't that enough reason right there? He changes on a daily basis, does one thing but then says whatever he feels will suck the weak minded in at the time. How can anyone trust this guy? Aren't you afraid of what he'll do if he were elected? If you are afraid of how the economy is now, how can you trust that he won't make it worse? I honestly feel that he will. How can you be sure that he'll stick to the policies that are important to you? It's a pattern with this guy, he keeps flip flopping, he has no clear detailed economic plan, will not talk about the loopholes, doesn't stand behind planned parenthood (depending on what day you listen to him), the list goes on and on. He sure hasn't earned my trust. Obama/Biden have.

Pres.Obama has turned this country around and we are heading in the right direction in spite of the traitorous pledge that the obstructionist rethugs signed and swore to norquist and mcconnell. Vote straight Democratic ticket. We would be so much further down the road to recovery, but the rethugs led by seditionist mcconnell , swore a pledge to thwart any bills by Pres.Obama. Look up the "secret meeting" on inaugeration day. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012 and a straight Dem ticket !

Romney might be the one to make this country great again even if he is on the other side.

The final CNN/ORC post-debate poll shows 48% of respondents who watched the third presidential debate thought President Barack Obama won the event, compared to 40% who thought Mitt Romney won.

The president's eight-point advantage came among a debate audience that was slightly more Republican than the country as a whole. The survey had a sampling error of +/- 4.5%. The poll was conducted Monday night at the conclusion of the debate, held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.
