Post-debate, Romney focuses on economy; no mention of Libya

After Tuesday's fiery presidential debate, the heated arguments between GOP candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama showed no signs of cooling on the stump as they tried to cast each other as economic threats to voters in Ohio, Iowa and Virginia. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

LEESBURG, Va. – In two appearances Wednesday in the critical battleground state of Virginia, Mitt Romney focused on what he called the president's lack of a second term agenda, while avoiding Libya, a major flashpoint from Tuesday night's debate.

"I think it’s interesting that the president still doesn’t have an agenda for a second term. Don’t you think that it’s time for him to finally put together a vision of what he’d do in the next four years if he were elected?" Romney said in Chesapeake, Va. on Wednesday afternoon.

At an evening event in Northern Virginia, Romney continued to work that theme, occasionally revisiting moments from the debate – as President Barack Obama did on the stump after the first debate – with snappier retorts.

"I just have to mention, I remember last night the president also saying about energy," Romney recalled before some 8,000 supporters Wednesday night. "He said, you know, we built pipelines that would go around the earth, and I thought, ‘It's just the one that comes from Canada with the oil is the one that we want, you see?’ And that's the one I'm going to get."

Libya went unmentioned in either appearance on Wednesday.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign event in front of a barn at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Va. on Wednesday.

The timeline of the attacks and the Obama administration’s response seemed to trip Romney during the debate.

Conservatives had previously said the attacks show the White House’s weakness in terms of foreign policy, and both campaigns spent much of Tuesday night's spin room session with reporters re-litigating the finer points of the administration's declaration of the attack as an act of terror.

"With 20 days left, today was a good day to hammer home the contrast between a candidate who has a plan to fix the economy in Governor Romney and a candidate who doesn't have a record to run on or a plan for the future, that being President Obama," Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden said when asked why Romney didn't talk about Libya Wednesday. "Libya is still an issue with many voters, particularly given the conflicting statements from the president and his administration about the nature of the attack. The American people still have unanswered questions."

Obama campaign spokesperson Jen Psaki offered a different view while discussing the debate with reporters aboard Air Force One today, suggesting that Obama's command of the Libya questions in Tuesday's debate might have shut down conversation on the issue -- for now.

"Our view is that the president – the back-and-forth on Libya last night was one of the best moments for the president, one of the best moments in recent debate history," Psaki said. "And that's because the president made clear that being commander-in-chief is about being a leader. It’s not about political gamesmanship."

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.

With a foreign policy debate coming Monday, Romney did make a point of mentioning other global issues at his second stop Wednesday, highlighting the importance of keeping America's military strong and ticking off a handful of world trouble spots he rarely mentions in a typical stump speech.

"I look around the world at North Korea, with its nuclear capability and a very strange dictator. I look at what’s happening throughout the Middle East and Pakistan," Romney said. "I look around North Africa now, with north Mali having been taken by an al-Qaida affiliate, and I recognize the world continues to be dangerous, and the decisions we make now about our military will determine our ability to defend ourselves in the future."

Oh and another thing NamVietnam, the GOP cronies in Congress have held up the Dodd/Frank bill that was passed "2 years" ago to avert another financial debacle like we experienced with the recent depression in this country. Romney, will dismantle the bill and give less not more regulations for the financial industry. They obstruct, lie through their teeth, want to keep taking from Paul, the working class, middle class and keep giving to Peter, the rich, the 1 percenters, the Koch Bros, the billionaires, the Industrial Military Complex, big oil, the banks, Wall Street, and the lists goes on and on. They are absolute poison for this country's future!!!

End the interest deduction for America on their homes, and what do these Romney disciples think will happen to the housing market ? It will be far worse than 2008. Reagan took deductions away from working-class America as well. So did Bush. When will we ever have enough of the rich Republicans screwing over America ? Rich people don't have house payments. Rich people want no tax on their dividends and capital gains while their taxes do not increase. How stupid can working-class or poor republicans be to buy into the Romney plan ? Poor republicans remind me of 1939 Germans who believed the Nazi's. Joined the party, then, voted accordingly. On the bright side, some are beginning to see Romney for what he is.

Mitt doesnt even stay true to his religion the book of mormon states

      religious text of Romney's faith.

"In Section 63, in verse 17 of the Doctrine and Covenants of the Mormon Church we find this: 'All liars, and whosoever loveth and and maketh a lie, and the whoremonger, and the sorcerer, shall have their part in that lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death,'" . "And from the Book of Mormon to Nephi, Chapter 2, Verse 34 we find this: 'Woe unto the liar, for he shall be thrust down to hell.'"

Bain capital under Romney had an 80% success rate, That means that 8 out of 10 companies that Bain invested money in were successful, Bain only used investors money.

Obamas success rate using taxpayers money is less than 40%, That means that less than 4 out of 10 companies that Obama used my taxpayer dollars in have been successful, That includes GM and Chrysler, Chrysler is now owned by Fiat which is a foreign owned company(Italy) GM is now importing the GM spark and another similar model in from Korea to keep sales up, The Volt is now out of production and the US funded battery maker that was making volt batteries has gone bankrupt...But it is not a total loss...all those Obama funded companies that went bankrupt had special bankruptcy proceeding so that the taxpayer is the last to get any money from the bankruptch proceedings and the Obama campaign bundlers will get all of their money first.

It's really the Congress that's the problem. President Obama has little to do with the waste and overages of our fiscal policies.

A new report from Senator Tom Coburn's office highlights dozens of examples of government waste in 2012. Included for the first time on this list: Congress. The very people looking into government waste find they themselves are wasteful. Coburn's report estimates $132 million of taxpayers' money was wasted on "the most unproductive and unpopular Congress in modern history."

Loopholes are part of the problem. The National Football League, for example, pulled in more than $9 billion last year, yet is technically a "non-profit" organization, costing the federal government tens of millions of dollars every year in lost revenue.

"We have some of the biggest corporations in America paying no taxes whatsoever, you know something is wrong with the code," says the Republican senator.

Millions of dollars have also been spent on questionable items, like $325,000 on a squirrel robot, realistic enough to fool a rattlesnake, and developed with a National Science Foundation grant; $40,000 to produce a video game where players can virtually enjoy a pond in Massachusetts; and $516,000 to create a video game called "Prom Week," which simulates the interaction of teenagers surrounding the biggest social night in high school.

          Lying about historical facts is.

Mitt lies about historical facts. He said he asked for women's resumes as governor. That's a blatant lie, both candidates were given the resumes by a women's group.

Mitt said in the primaries he would lower taxes. No he says his plan is revenue-neutral. A blatant lie.

Mitt said he didn't agree with parts of the AZ bill, but he hired the drafter of the bill to his staff.

Mitt said in the primaries he wold welcome the opportunity to overturn Roe v Wade, he said a week ago he has no intent on doing so. A blatant lie.

It goes on and on and on.

Obummers, Lies, Lies, Lies last night on the debates. Obama
fully misrepresented what he knew about the embassy in Libya. There is no way
the State Department was not fully aware of the attack in real-time. To try to
blame the attack on a YouTube video is absolutely misrepresented to the
American people. It's clear that his administration is either out of control,
potential lame, or willfully distorting the facts to the American people. He's trying to hold out till after the
election to disclose the truth, hoping it will get him reelected.

            Obummers, Lies, Lies, Lies

            The issue on fuel is
really interesting because Obama stated fuel prices should be up in a good
economy implying that in 2007 and January 2008 when he took over the economy
was horribly bad; this is not true typically in a good economy the gas prices
should be significantly lower in proportion to other needs and commodities.

            Look at the Clinton
era and the Bush era, fuel prices were significantly lower portion of the
consumers spend than they are at this time. Obama-nomics, speculation, and bad
foreign relations have caused the issues.

If you consider all the money that was spent just during the
Obama term in Afghanistan and Iraq; use of the funds for alternate fuel
technologies rather than war would have significantly reduced our dependency on
foreign fuels. There is no talk about financial responsibility of the Congress
or the president. With his level of arrogance is clear Obama forgets who pays
his bill and supports the Congress; they work for the American people.

CONGRESS AND OBAMA forget who they work for we need CHANGE,

stayinformednow, I agree with you that this issue is not dead. Candy tried to expain why she said what she did, but I never heard her say she was wrong (which she was).

What did Obama say in the Rose Garden a day after the attack in
Libya? ”No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this nation,” he
                          said.

Read the whole Rose Garden remarks and it is clear he did not call this a terrorist attack. His spokesperson followed up on the Sunday talk shows and said it was due to the anti-muslim film.

Hey Romney...where are your tax returns...you haven't release one years worth of tax returns....the 2010 tax returns were missing segments on off-shore accounts, and you only release a projected summary of 2011...what are you hiding?

Hey Romney....why can't you tell Americans which deductions you will do away with in order for your budget plan to work...oh, that's right NOT ONE economists has said your budget plan can work without increasing taxes.

Hey Romney....how come your approval rating was 30% when you left as Gov of Mass???? Why was Mass ranked 47th in jobs???

Hey Romney....you will never be president....

Dragon, What happened to the $1.5 billion debt in Mass. when Romney took over? What was the unemployment rate in Mass. during his term in office?

If you apply for a job they usually request your school records not your tax returns. Where are Obama's school records?

1987: Do you mean someone who has paid into social security all their lives and now expects to receive it?

Do you mean someone who has served in the military overseas and did not pay taxes on that income, as no one who serves oveseas does.

Do you mean someone who is disabled?

Do you mean someone who is working multiple jobs but still is under the income level to pay federal taxes?

Or do you mean the very wealthy who live on their investments and don't pay federal taxes?

Romney is a putz who couldn't know my pain if it hit him in the face. Queen Ann doesn't have to worry about her medical bills so where do these two get off saying they understand me, all the while they are building their next mansion with an elevator for their cars.

The market is up no thanks to the obstructionist in congress and jobs are being created, albeit slowly but ask the the over 4 1/2 million who have gotten their jobs since the GOP putzes caused the crash to being with. If you can't get a job, try harder instead of sitting on your ass collecting whatever government subsidies you can find. They jobs are there, people, not glamorous but they are there. I found one when most people were losing their jobs.

lol romney said he wants more free trade agreements in the debate. like that is going to really help the US economy. free trade is part of the issue with why the US economy is currently doing so bad.

I don't pay to much attention to a persons Religious beleif. That's is until they indicate that they allow it to cross State Lines. There is a fine line between right and wrong decissions. I'm not what one would call Religious but like many people I go through life paying my Bills, going to work, enjoying life, friends, family, neighbors, and meeting new people. I try not to swear, but at times an occassional heck or Darn slips, as we all will have something really dig us. We're all human.

What really bothers me is when I hear someone say (Incumbent or someone running for office) that I let my Religion make decissions. Ryan has said this. Biden has said he doesn't allow Religion to make decissions for him. Both Men answered the same question and both Men are Catholics, The question here is how do you think either of these Men will work for your interest. I don't care what anyones beleif is but to force what you think is your ideals on to those that are not your Faith is a Sin. I have said in the past that if you shove your Cross in my face that I would stick it where the Sun doesn't shine. I have a close friend and he always says bless you or Go Bless, I can live with that as he doesn't push his Religion at me. It drives some of my friends crazy but he is upstanding, honest, and loyal, I can live with that.

I don't like the Ryan Plan, I don't like the idea of a voucher, and Romney-nomics doesn't make any sence to me. All of a sudden Romney is a Business Man not a CEO? Why did he DEMOTE himself? There are 2 kinds of CEOs Good one and Bad ones. Romney is a Bad CEO, a Chinese Butt Kissing, Job Outsourcing, Life Ruining CEO. There are Tigers and White Tigers but their Stripes don't change.
