Post-debate, Romney focuses on economy; no mention of Libya

After Tuesday's fiery presidential debate, the heated arguments between GOP candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama showed no signs of cooling on the stump as they tried to cast each other as economic threats to voters in Ohio, Iowa and Virginia. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

LEESBURG, Va. – In two appearances Wednesday in the critical battleground state of Virginia, Mitt Romney focused on what he called the president's lack of a second term agenda, while avoiding Libya, a major flashpoint from Tuesday night's debate.

"I think it’s interesting that the president still doesn’t have an agenda for a second term. Don’t you think that it’s time for him to finally put together a vision of what he’d do in the next four years if he were elected?" Romney said in Chesapeake, Va. on Wednesday afternoon.

At an evening event in Northern Virginia, Romney continued to work that theme, occasionally revisiting moments from the debate – as President Barack Obama did on the stump after the first debate – with snappier retorts.

"I just have to mention, I remember last night the president also saying about energy," Romney recalled before some 8,000 supporters Wednesday night. "He said, you know, we built pipelines that would go around the earth, and I thought, ‘It's just the one that comes from Canada with the oil is the one that we want, you see?’ And that's the one I'm going to get."

Libya went unmentioned in either appearance on Wednesday.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign event in front of a barn at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Va. on Wednesday.

The timeline of the attacks and the Obama administration’s response seemed to trip Romney during the debate.

Conservatives had previously said the attacks show the White House’s weakness in terms of foreign policy, and both campaigns spent much of Tuesday night's spin room session with reporters re-litigating the finer points of the administration's declaration of the attack as an act of terror.

"With 20 days left, today was a good day to hammer home the contrast between a candidate who has a plan to fix the economy in Governor Romney and a candidate who doesn't have a record to run on or a plan for the future, that being President Obama," Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden said when asked why Romney didn't talk about Libya Wednesday. "Libya is still an issue with many voters, particularly given the conflicting statements from the president and his administration about the nature of the attack. The American people still have unanswered questions."

Obama campaign spokesperson Jen Psaki offered a different view while discussing the debate with reporters aboard Air Force One today, suggesting that Obama's command of the Libya questions in Tuesday's debate might have shut down conversation on the issue -- for now.

"Our view is that the president – the back-and-forth on Libya last night was one of the best moments for the president, one of the best moments in recent debate history," Psaki said. "And that's because the president made clear that being commander-in-chief is about being a leader. It’s not about political gamesmanship."

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.

With a foreign policy debate coming Monday, Romney did make a point of mentioning other global issues at his second stop Wednesday, highlighting the importance of keeping America's military strong and ticking off a handful of world trouble spots he rarely mentions in a typical stump speech.

"I look around the world at North Korea, with its nuclear capability and a very strange dictator. I look at what’s happening throughout the Middle East and Pakistan," Romney said. "I look around North Africa now, with north Mali having been taken by an al-Qaida affiliate, and I recognize the world continues to be dangerous, and the decisions we make now about our military will determine our ability to defend ourselves in the future."

As a former republican, I used to hear that if you give tax cuts it creates jobs. But we had years of tax cuts and 2008, no jobs. It doesn't work. What the Dems and Obama need to be doing is playing that 47% tape some more. In it Romney lays out his economic plan and by the way for Monday night it lays out his Israel plan too. He says his plan is TO DO NOTHING! THAT IS WHAT HE SAYS TO RICH PEOPLE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. I think republicans are clinging to republicans of the past which they don't know aren't like that anymore since the teaparty and Sarah Palin arrived. They no longer if they ever did cling to their morals and values and respect and decency. They lie and they try anyway they can to get a vote. I pray and I hope others join with me in that FOR EVERY LIE THE REPUBLICANS HAVE TOLD AGAINST OBAMA HE REAPS DOUBLE ASIS STATED IN THE BIBLE. Please pray with me on that. I am conservative in many ways but the right wing has gotten way to radical and off the lying chart for me. I cannot believe that a concerned, pro American, benevolent, thinking person would even consider voting for Romney. I hope it is just the media trying to manipulate what should be a very boring, cut and dried campaign, into something interesting. It gets a little too interesting for me. I almost didn't watch the last debate after all the incorrect imo coverage of the first. Obama didn't make gaffes, be disrespectful, act spoiled etc. That was the supposed "winner." Not by me. But I am so glad to see Obama clean the bullies clock time after time. My favorite being when Romney got chewed out by an angry Obama over Libya in front of our whole nation. He couldn't have paid and got that done. Good job. Obama. And may you reap mightily for every single lie the republicans tell! In votes I hope. I want to see a landslide for Obama!

      Post debate Gallop Poll today:
      Romney 51%
      Obama 45%
Romney gains 2% points in rolling Gallop Poll. I guess constant lying, stone walling, and Candy Crawley in front of millions isn't a good path to follow?

eric: But, but, but Repubs said polls are skewed and they should be ignored...now you want to tout them because Romeny is favored....LOL!

BTW, it takes a few days for impact of debate to be felt in the polls.

And it is the electoral college vote that count, and President Obama is still ahead in those.

Mitt Romney: Let's throw progress out the window. Get rid of all restrictions on energy companies. Let them do what they want. Let them and the states cut their own deal. Forget about clean air and clean water. Forget about small, safe, fuel efficient cars. Let's get gas cheap and start driving gas guzzlers again. Let's throw out ALL the progress on hydrid cars, electric cars, solar power, and wind power. Let's just drill and dig with little or no restrictions AND IN 50 YEARS, OUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS can figure it out. LET THEM WORRY ABOUT IT. We are about two things: TODAY AND OURSELVES. Let's throw new ideas and innovation out the window and just go back to how it was. THE FUTURE IS FOR LOSERS. THE PAST IS FOR WINNERS.

hey stupid. ever walk a beach with crap floating on the shoreline or cutting your foot on a piece of glass that was on the sand. ever walk near a mall, or store, or even at a gas station. you think people really care. it is easier to throw trash on the ground, sand, shoreline of a beach. don't you read that green energy jobs come and go-go faster than come. A123 systems was a battery factory that cost the taxpayer 250 m. never made a battery and the battery was for the volt and other cars. 1.1b went to the chicoms for green energy jobs, solar panels. the chicoms can't sell them. and why would obama give 1.1b for such a venture. that is 1.1b gone (which btw was a out sourced job by guess who? obama) obama btw has invested 100,000 in stock with that Il company that you libs are complaining about, because of bain and workers that are chicoms.

the London Daily Mail just had an article out on global warming. they have found out through research that global warming ended 16 years ago. green energy, global warming, such a farce.

        just giving ya the facts.

What else does this rich jerk have to complain about? Again, at the last debate he failed to answer directly, questions asked by the audience. He is a fraud, a lier, caters to the rich and big business. This bozo is the last person who should be elected President. He was a lousy Governor. Obama was on his game and put him in his place. Romney is a puppet for the GOP, Religious Right, and last but not least the Tea Party. The economy is slowly starting to show some life. Real Estate is improving, employers are staring to hire again. Romney will repeat the same sound bites like he did at the debate without backing any of it up. He has no substance. His handlers figure if you say it enough times people willl listen and vote for him. Not this guy. I certainly do not want to go back to the days when George W. was leading this country. If you elect Romney, that is exactly what you will get but it will be 10x worse with the stupid decisions he will make that will hurt the middle class while spoiling the rich, the 1 percenters, the Koch Bros. of this country.

He would sooner go on daytime and nighttime TV than meet with worlds leaders. He and Joe Biden are an embarrassment to our country!

Vote Romney/Ryan for the only real hope and change needed or our country is Spain and Greece 2.0 in no time...wait till Ban Bernanke can't keep the money presses running anymore for Obama!! Our stock market and dollar will tank.

Do you understand that Ben Bernanke is printing worthless dollars...do you understand that as soon as the US credit rating is downgraded all things in our economy will tank?!

Our deficit is unsustainable and Obama doesn't have a plan..do you ever talk to small business owners? I know four that are cutting employees to part time, keeping number of employees to under 50 all to avoid the killing Obamacare provisions.

We have college age kids that are smart enough to know their future is doomed if the track of this country doesn't change. One is graduating as a nure in May and sees that doctors and hospital and the whole healthcare field will be ruined with Obamacare. Our college freshman son says he fears war with China in his lifetime because we will never be able to repay them.

Housing coming back...maybe in very selected markets..still in the tank and underwater in most places.

What is Obama's plan?....he doesn't have one...can't work bi-partisan governing is divise and lies!

Obama has grown the deficit more than any President...own up and stop the blame game!

Ever since 2 years ago, watching Sen. Minority Leader, Mitch McCpnnell say in the senate, his agenda was to do all he can to make sure Obama serves 1 term as president.

Since that time, the whole Republican agenda stuck to it by blocking and voting NO for every single bill that would help and protect the American people to get us out of the ditch their predessor put us in. They stopped every job bill, along with tax cuts. They denied every family of progress to NOT LOOSE HOMES due to crooked loans. They did not wanted us to stay in the economic ditch, so they could blame the President for promises he couldn't keep.

CONGRESS CHOSE TO BE SO DRASTIC THEY WENT AS FAR RIGHT AS THEY COULD SUPPORTING MR. ROMNEY, WHO especially in this last debate floundered with repeating lies over more lies to cover up fighting only for the rich and denying what he said in private was his true personal character that only the closest to him know. Only his rich peers who paid 50,000 a plate in Florida understand and agree with Romney because there is not enough money when greed is the main agenda of this election.

As Americans watching Romney go thru his paces, we see right through this game he is playing.

As for women, he has been caught in more lies with facts brought forward thru the media to bring the truth in the light. Romney doesn't care about women. He cannot get the story straight every time. Hes got no leg to stand on.

He didn't answer the young woman's question during the debate. He believes bosses can comtrol pay and medical needs for women in their work places. Any women who thinks they will get ahead economically will find out the true intentions of Mr. Romney if they vote him into office.

                            NOW ON CHINA.

FRIDAY NIGHT MSNBC WILL BE TELEVISING FROM FREEPORT, ILLINOIS WHERE CEO, MITT ROMNEY'S BAIN CAPTITOL, IS OWNER OF THE FACTORY THEY ARE CURRENTLY CLOSING AND SENDING IT TO CHINA.

TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, THEY ARE MAKING AMERICANS train chinese to do their jobs. When the training is done, over 200 American workers will be fired.

Another insult, when the Chinese arrived for training, Bain took down the American Flag.

ON FRIDAY NIGHT YOU WILL SEE AND HEAR FROM WORKERS THEMSELVES.

P.S. Romney's tape about the 47% also mentions his intentions about shipping jobs to China for cheap labor, even though that factory in Freeport has operated at a profit every single year.

THE ONLY WAY FOR AMERICANS TO CHANGE THIS RADICAL REPUBLICAN AGENDA IS TO VOTE A STRAIGHT TICKET FOR DEMOCRATS IN THE VOTING BOOTH. THE REPUBLICANS BLOCKED SUPPORT FOR AMERICAN MIDDLELCASS AND BUSINESSES, THEREFOR THE PRESIDENT IS NOT TO BLAME FOR WHAT THEY DO...

I watched Congress the last four years now that I'm retired. People who too busy working and caring for their families don't have time to follow what is happening in Congress. They believe bits and pieces of what Republican candidates are throwing out to them. Unfortunately, silver tongued Romney is a professional of telling lies to the point he believes in his own lies. That is why he sounds convincing. Don't be fooled! PEOPLE OPEN UP YOUR EYES.

Radatz and Crowley stood up to the bully Romney and did not let him control the debate like he did with Jim Leherer so of course the GOP cries foul, calls them obnoxious and aggressive. See, the GOP considers women 2nd class citizens and are not equal with men in their party. If you want to roll the clock back on women's rights, then vote for the bozo, Romney. Obama had a strong performance at the recent debate and the GOP can't deal with it. Well at the next debate, Romney willl be slipping and sliding even more because foreign relations is not his strong suit as we saw from his tour overseas making one gaffe after another.

As the rest of the world watch American choose a new leader, there should be the exhibition of some degree of intellect in the world's leading economy. As we watch here in Sweden, the Republicans and Mitt Romney have shown that he is not going to be very good for the USA though Obama also has lots of things that are questionable here and there in his policies.

We are afraid that the USA will give the world another George W Bush though Romney says that he is different. Nevertheless, look at all his policy advisers they are all George Bush people.

Blaming Obama for the slow economy are people who don't know anything about how an economy work. It is true that when people are unemployed they are desperate but believe me it will get worse under Romany. As an economist I understand his type of economic line and the middle class will have no voice at all when his presidency will be barricaded by big companies

If the American economic improvement genuinely has to do with - increasing production and the lives of its people, we feel that Obama is better in that direction.

So he should try and to explain well to the people where the country was and accept that he did what he could. He should point to the stresses he had with the GOPs in congress and how they refused supporting him make progress by making sure that he should fail. From the start of his office term people like Rush Limbough and GOP politicians sign a pledge to make him a one term president. He is not reminding people about that.

He should talk more about the deficit and show how his plan will reduce it. He should also tell the Americans that the deficit is going down while reminding the Americans that it is the Democrats who are best in giving American lower deficits and balanced budget

But if the Americans are just interested in self interest and short terms gains, then I think Romney will be good but they should also know that American will start wars again which will add to the deficit and make them more hated in the world. Therefore as the wealthy will gain more wealth the common man will pay more tax. Also note that with Mitts flip flopping, he can eve declare a war and tell the American people that he did not do it.

Already with polls showing Romney gaining, people here are already loosing interest in the USA and some people have started talking of shifting towards China in stronger alliance building.

Romney had a bad night Wednesday, but the question was accurate and the President actually was incorrect, so was the debate person, so Romney made a point that Obama miss quoted the terrorist attack as a riot and did not mention a terror attack for sometime leaving the president looking as if he doesn't know what is happening and it is obvious he doesn't, but Obama is a good politician, I have seen him turn questions of his policies around where as he looks as if he answered, but did not and then directs a question back making the opponent look bad, Romney is a scholar and a gentleman his bringing up Fast & Furious was the start of a victory, but he allowed Obama to do what Obama does and Obama then turned the question of accountability around, we have a crook in the white house his policies and his actions have lost American lives and his (Obama's) supporters don"t care about others life's as long as it doesn't interfere with their life's.

Republicans crashed the economy and 4 years later, we still arent back to normal. WHY?? The Republicans determined even before the Inauguration of Pres. Obama that total obstruction would be the norm. At a time of crisis, with the country’s entire financial system near collapse, with the economy collapsing, with the stock market collapsing, with unemployment skyrocketing, with people losing their jobs and retirement money, the GOP announced that THEIR #1 priority was to assure that Pres. Obama was a 1 term president!! So, they pledged to sabotage the economic recovery, asserting the no president in a poor economy has ever been re-elected.

A coalition of women from Massachusetts came up with that idea to recommend to Flopney for cabinet posts in his incompetent administration as Governor. Obamacare is an exact blue print of what they rolled out in Massachusetts and Flopney wants to dismantle it for the nation. On immigration, the architect who wrote the plan for Arizona is the same bozo who will outline Flopney's plan for the country. Flopney will end the mortgage interest deduction and tax credit for higher education. Who are we kidding here? Flopney is in bed with big oil and the Koch Bros will give them more not less corporate welfare. As for equal pay for women, the GOP and certainly Flopney do not believe in it. He couldn't answer one question at the recent debate head on. He has nothing to stand on just the same old sound bites that carry zero weight. Oh and the dope wants to give another $100 billion to the military to fight endless wars. Is he out of his mind?

End the interest deduction for America on their homes, and what do these Romney disciples think will happen to the housing market ? It will be far worse than 2008. Reagan took deductions away from working-class America as well. So did Bush. When will we ever have enough of the rich Republicans screwing over America ? Rich people don't have house payments. Rich people want no tax on their dividends and capital gains while their taxes do not increase. How stupid can working-class or poor republicans be to buy into the Romney plan ? Poor republicans remind me of 1939 Germans who believed the Nazi's. Joined the party, then, voted accordingly. On the bright side, some are beginning to see Romney for what he is.

When it comes to women's health, Mitt Romney simply doesn't get it.

In his run for the presidency, voters have become reacquainted with a candidate who is simply dangerous on women's health issues.
Time and again, Romney has shown that he's willing to throw women's health under the bus in order to get elected. He made that point crystal clear this spring when discussing which programs he would eliminate, his answer was simple: "Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that." But that's just the beginning.
Here are the top five things you need to know about Mitt Romney and where he stands on women's health issues.
No matter how much he tries to talk around the issue and run from his record, there's no avoiding the fact that Mitt Romney opposes access to safe and legal abortion. When asked if he believes the Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade, his answer was simple: "Yes, I do." When asked if the repeal of Roe would be a good day for America, he responded "Absolutely."

He announced his support for the Blunt amendment, a bill that was introduced to restrict access to birth control by allowing any employer the right to deny health insurance coverage for any benefit based on a "moral" conviction. Governor Romney is on the wrong side of the public on this issue: 67 percent of American voters opposed this measure. He has aggressively supported this stance, even launching a petition against the Health and Human Services ruling to include birth control as basic preventive care.
If elected, Romney has pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act "on day one" of his presidency, meaning one of his first acts would be to cut off millions of women and families' access to affordable preventive care by returning to the days when you could be discriminated against for pre-existing conditions and overturning the no-cost birth control benefit.
Romney supports extreme and sweeping measures like a "personhood" amendment to define life at conception (which could ban common forms of birth control and in some cases, in vitro fertilization) or his belief that states should have the right to ban contraception. Romney once commented that the landmark case of Griswold v. Connecticut — which overruled the state's right to ban contraception nearly 50 years ago — was wrong, proving just how dangerous he is on women's health issues.
"The actions I'll take immediately are to remove funding for Planned Parenthood." At the end of the day, it's his own words and actions that count and Romney has made his position more than clear: protecting access to basic preventive care is not what he's about and he must be held accountable, and must know that women are watching. When asked where he would tell the millions of women to go if he eliminated federal funding for Planned Parenthood, Romney said: "Well they can go wherever they'd like to go. This is a free society." Seems to us, Romney's saying women can go wherever they'd like as long as it's not Planned Parenthood. What Romney fails to understand and what we're seeing happen in states like Texas and Tennessee is that in certain places Planned Parenthood is the ONLY provider for women. Getting "rid of" Planned Parenthood which he seems so apt to do, is detrimental to the nearly three million patients who rely on their health centers for lifesaving cancer screenings, well-woman exams, and birth control.
TELL MITT ROMNEY HE'S NOT YOUR TICKET.

                                                                  More Quotes from Mitt Romney

First off. heaslthcare. if you have obamascare, why do you need planned Parenthood. seems that the lib woman would have the best of both worlds. free medical, birth control, abortions. what could a woman ask for.

equal pay. go into the service, any service. you will get paid the same as men. become a manager of a rental complex. same pay as men. start your own business, charge what you want. CEO's. VP and exe. in a company same pay as men. become a nurse, or medical tech. same pay. go work for GM or other cars companies. same pay as men. run for public office. same pay as men. the times have changed you haven't in this regards.

I remember when in high school, I did an paper on the ERA. interviewed the president of the milwaukee chapter. the interview was going great. until my last question was. "If you found out that your husband was cheating on you, how would you react?"

"I would take the sob to court, get the house, car, his stocks bonds and get the kids. that sob, would have only the clothes on his back."

"What would happen if your husband, caught you with another man or woman?"

"he better keep his mouth shut." now, this came from the president of the milwaukee chapter.

shall i continue on about equality with men and women. of the early days of era for example?think I will.

I remember that a man wanted to get into Vassar. he was denied. yet went to court and said that he was being discriminated against. the court sided with the collage. this was the reason the judge gave for the judgement. " It would be a mistake to have a male at a female school, for it would interrupt the social climate and by having a male sitting in a classroom full of young women would disrupt the education of that student." the times have changed.

let me go back for a moment to abortions. you are married, get pregnant and you want an abortion. the husband says, I want the child, you say, "hell no. I am getting it aborted." the husband has no voice in the matter. but who is going to pay for it. Right. the husband. why, because being married is a 50/50 proposition. no change here.

                                                                    #151.1 - Thu Oct 18, 2012 8:30 AM EDT

It's like saying the head guy at a concentration camp is qualified to be president because he ran a business. Make no mistake about it; Bain's existence and MO is analogous to a concentration camp. How/why?

Bain took total control of people's lives against their will and treated them like dirt; Bain extracted every piece of value they could find; Bain stripped away the dignity and resources from all the people they ruled over; Bain's leadership, i.e. Mitt Romney, profited greatly at the expense of those they lauded over and abused; Bain ended up destroying what was left including the lives and personal $$ resources of those they imprisoned.

This is Bain, this is what Bain did, this is what Mitt Romney ruled over as he and a select few laughed all the way to the bank at the expense of people who could do nothing to stop his corrupt and immoral pillaging of their livelihoods.

Real Americans need to know, Mitt Romney's tenure at Bain does not qualify him to be president; it qualifies him to be the head of a concentration camp. As each debate has proved, along with every opportunity he's had in front of a microphone, a camera or a hidden device, the real Mitt Romney is evil, condescending (to women, minorities, the less fortunate, the uninsured, the unemployed, our American citizen president who happens to be black), elitist, and he will always lie to get his way - even if it means turning his back on a faith he says is so important to him; all for the sake of $$$, power and prestige.

                                                                    • 3 votes

But, most of us would hafta be in a concentration camp with a big sign at the entrance that says, "Arbeit Macht Frei." And, would he care ? No. His money would be going to Switzerland.

It is leadership that got Romney success in business, success in the olympics, and success in ridding Mass. of deficit. Obama does not have it. His cut the deficit in half during first term failed. His keep unemployment under 8% if his stimulus was passed failed. He has the worst recovery from a recession in well over 50 years. He has misled the american people on numerous issues with Libya being one of the latest. Romney is far more qualified than him.

Strange thing is, a huge majority of right-leaning Christians almost always look for an old testament scripture passage to support their views. Why is it they find it so difficult to find something in the new testament??? Could it be that Jesus never said anything that supports their desire and pursuit of $$, power, prestige and control??? What say you Mr Romney and Mr Ryan?
