Post-debate, Romney focuses on economy; no mention of Libya

After Tuesday's fiery presidential debate, the heated arguments between GOP candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama showed no signs of cooling on the stump as they tried to cast each other as economic threats to voters in Ohio, Iowa and Virginia. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

LEESBURG, Va. – In two appearances Wednesday in the critical battleground state of Virginia, Mitt Romney focused on what he called the president's lack of a second term agenda, while avoiding Libya, a major flashpoint from Tuesday night's debate.

"I think it’s interesting that the president still doesn’t have an agenda for a second term. Don’t you think that it’s time for him to finally put together a vision of what he’d do in the next four years if he were elected?" Romney said in Chesapeake, Va. on Wednesday afternoon.

At an evening event in Northern Virginia, Romney continued to work that theme, occasionally revisiting moments from the debate – as President Barack Obama did on the stump after the first debate – with snappier retorts.

"I just have to mention, I remember last night the president also saying about energy," Romney recalled before some 8,000 supporters Wednesday night. "He said, you know, we built pipelines that would go around the earth, and I thought, ‘It's just the one that comes from Canada with the oil is the one that we want, you see?’ And that's the one I'm going to get."

Libya went unmentioned in either appearance on Wednesday.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign event in front of a barn at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Va. on Wednesday.

The timeline of the attacks and the Obama administration’s response seemed to trip Romney during the debate.

Conservatives had previously said the attacks show the White House’s weakness in terms of foreign policy, and both campaigns spent much of Tuesday night's spin room session with reporters re-litigating the finer points of the administration's declaration of the attack as an act of terror.

"With 20 days left, today was a good day to hammer home the contrast between a candidate who has a plan to fix the economy in Governor Romney and a candidate who doesn't have a record to run on or a plan for the future, that being President Obama," Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden said when asked why Romney didn't talk about Libya Wednesday. "Libya is still an issue with many voters, particularly given the conflicting statements from the president and his administration about the nature of the attack. The American people still have unanswered questions."

Obama campaign spokesperson Jen Psaki offered a different view while discussing the debate with reporters aboard Air Force One today, suggesting that Obama's command of the Libya questions in Tuesday's debate might have shut down conversation on the issue -- for now.

"Our view is that the president – the back-and-forth on Libya last night was one of the best moments for the president, one of the best moments in recent debate history," Psaki said. "And that's because the president made clear that being commander-in-chief is about being a leader. It’s not about political gamesmanship."

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.

With a foreign policy debate coming Monday, Romney did make a point of mentioning other global issues at his second stop Wednesday, highlighting the importance of keeping America's military strong and ticking off a handful of world trouble spots he rarely mentions in a typical stump speech.

"I look around the world at North Korea, with its nuclear capability and a very strange dictator. I look at what’s happening throughout the Middle East and Pakistan," Romney said. "I look around North Africa now, with north Mali having been taken by an al-Qaida affiliate, and I recognize the world continues to be dangerous, and the decisions we make now about our military will determine our ability to defend ourselves in the future."

People now see that this election is about Grover Norquist, Karl Rove, and the TEA Party. In 2010, the TEA Party told Senior Citizens that Obama Care (The Affordable Care Act) would destroy Medicare. So Seniors voted for the TEA Party Candidates who actually lied to them, and that lie has come to pass, as we now see the Republican TEA Party Plan is to provide vouchers for Senior Citizens to purchase Medicare and Medicaid, and the price will be $6,400 per year. Mitt Romney is nothing more than a talking head for the TEA Party GOP. Not one GOP Leader, Norquist, or Rove wanted Romney, but they have him and he is a disaster. But as Norquist says everyday, "All we need is a monkey who can sign his name to new bills sent to the White House, and we will control America". Why is the print and television media not exposing the real plan of the TEA Party and the TEA Party GOP? Why suddenly do we hear that many Republicans who were sucked into the threat machine of Norquist, Rove, and the TEA Party saying "We are not part of the TEA Party"? Americans, and especially women, better wake-up and pour out the Kool Aid you are getting from Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and Grover Norquist.

Don't forget Rove main. Romney must get really tired of being on his knees. Maybe we should send him a couple pairs of knee pads and a tube of lip balm.

Romney wants to supply the rebels in Syria with anti-aircraft weapons, and anti-tak weapons. So that they can win and establish Sharia Law in Syria. Having a country with Sharia Law is like having 500 mosques full of terrorists being ran by a sociopathic Imams.

        No need to mention Libya...

I think it's fair to say we all know there was a huge cover up, or at best everyone in this administration had a different story. Obama ran around for 2 weeks with all his surrogates blaming the attack on a video. I don't care how what he said in the rose garden before he went to a fund raiser...

I suppose you consider that more relevant than the fact the Republicans voted down the 300 million requested for more security for our embassys. Just one more chapter in the back-stabbing and back-biting Book of Romney. No wonder he didn't want to bring up Libya.

The funding is why Obama ran around blaming this on a video. Now why would Obama lie for the repubs and not just throw this at them then????

Romney wants to keep us in Afghanistan longer by leaving 20,000 troops. That's not shutting that war down at all. We left 10,000 troops in Vietnam in 1973. Two years later during the Fall of Saigon, how'd that work out for us ? If he had his way, he'll invade Iraq for a third time. While he's at it, he'll build a much stronger ally for Iran in Syria and give Al-Qaida the strongest foothold ever in a country nearer to NATO.

R$mney's favorite thing to do, is bankrupt a corporation and then file protection on the backs of the American people. Isn't it bad enough he lied on national television with the olympics? Man had to borrow 1.3 BILLION from US (the american taxpayer) to pay for it.

The Syrian rebels who want Sharia Law and their A-Qaeda allies will be delighted with Romney if he's elected, because, they know he will furnish them with all the weapons neccesary short of ICBM's to accomplish their task. Syria will have Sharia law, and many many caches of Chemical and Biological weapons that once belonged to Assad. Iran will rush to ally with the Syrian rebels at that point. So will the Hezbolah and Hamas.

His past beliefs on things, has changed on almost everything, as he kisses the far right's butts in hopes of getting their votes. He's already telegraphed he wants to get us into another war. Do we really need that????

What we need is to go back to our Constitution and life our lives with a small government. We can't get that with either candidate. However, if I have a choice, I'd rather have a President who at least understands the true meaning of our Constitution - that's why I'm voting for Romney.

If anyone actually cares about Romney's ridiculous "bucket" plan....a full independent analysis done by the centrist Third Way Group shows that if everyone capped their deductions at $25K as Romney suggested during the second debate, that would pay for about 16% of his cut in taxes (lowering rates 20%). That isn't even mentioning the additional 2 trillion the guy wants to add to the military.

So, that means he will either have to raise taxes or explode the deficit.....or specify exactly what federal spending you are going to cut. (look out Medicare and Social Security)

Regarding Obama....first off...he has a record to run off of. He has created 5.2 million jobs in the last 2 1/2 years (that's even coming off the worst recession in 80 years). He proposed the American Jobs Act that was killed by the GOP. He proposed the infrastructure bill that was killed by the GOP. He proposed the state-aid bill that was killed by the GOP. How about passing these bills that the CBO guarantees will create jobs (not praying will). Also, he wants to add hundreds of thousands of teachers so our kids aren't dealing with a 40 kids to 1 teacher scenario. Obama doesn't have a plan? Give me a break!

What is so ***inine is that out of one side of your piehole you talk about support for Romney and the other side you talk about spending?? People on here who can't see the difference between Libya and Syria are clueless. Libya is the first predominantly Muslim country in history who's citizens are not afraid to speak out against Muslim extremism and fundamentalism who defy Sharia Law. Libya does not have chemical and biological weapons. Libya is not allied with Iran. Libya still has many problems with being infested with Al-Qaeda and their allies, however they are rooting them out. So are we here in America. The FBI just hasn't found them all yet. Syria is a no-win situation for us. Obama has 17 intelligence agencies advising him to leave Syria alone. Romney has the Book of Mormon and his closest diciples.

When Bush invaded Afghanistan, he set the Karzai Drug Cartel up in business. Opium exports have increased ten fold. Our troops are ordered not to torch the poppy fields. Rather protect them. Romney doesn't want out of Afghanistan. Heroin abuse in our country has increased 800% as a result. Rich people got no use for it. They get their drugs from the coccaine producers. Why should they care? Follow the money. Who benefits ? The Defense contractors, the Mafia, politicans who have their hands in defense industry's pockets, the phamaceutical companies. Romney wants to keep that going. There's also minerals to be had. Lithium, etc.. Arms for dope and lithium. Sweet ain't it ? Meanwhile, throw in 4 billion $$ every year in foreign aid to Karzai for a bonus.

I'm not worried about the breakdown in this administration over Libya as I am with the struggling economy that's hurting me right now. It troubles me how they handled Libya, but not as much as the struggles I have paying my bills. I voted for Obama and really thought like many he would do so much better. It's worse. Far more worse. Outside of Obamacare which I am for, I can not support Obama this go around.

When you hear him talk about his 5 points, wouldn't you like to have just a little more detail? Obama has been clear about what he feels is right for the economy. I don't agree with all of it, but compared to the lack luster and details from Romney, Obama is still the right choice.

We've heard this same mumbo jumbo before.....give tax breaks...cut regulation and like magic, the economy will be perfect. This is exactly how Bush/Cheney pitched their two tax cuts. And what led to the crash.

Obama is the guy who took the Bush/Cheney economy and turned it around (don't believe me, read a paper). He is the one who save the auto industry. He is the one who has three jobs bills in congress that are being blocked by the GOP right now.

Romney's ridiculous 'plan' is nonsense. To make matters worse, his tax plan explodes the deficit. Don't believe me, read the non-partisan analysis by the Third Way Group done yesterday.

Could you also explain how adding jobs for 31 straight months is WORSE than losing 800,000 jobs per month (and 9% of GDP per quarter)? I'd LOVE to hear your response........

It's as if he's not asking me to vote for him or his plan, only asking me to not vote for Romney. He's given me reasons to not vote for Romney but no reason to vote for him. I've heard Romney's plans just like everyone else that will listen. I haven't heard anything but it takes time and give me 4 more years. That's all. I can't repeat the last four years. I can't

Working over 50+ a week, with nothing improving.

I'm living it. My family feels it and I want better. I'm not convinced anymore that Obama can deliver.

I think Obama should just use Mitts own material, including the 47% tape etc. Obama does best it seems when MItt is destroying himself. He had a good couple of weeks but other than that is has been one moment of destruction after another. And we haven't had the October surprise have we. Hopefully the Obama team has a good one keyed for Mitt. He deserves it don't you think after all those arrogant, spoiled, disrespectful, in artful lies and comments and that silly smile which Fox News isn't criticizing for whatever reason. It is kinda of a squinty smirk. Isn't it?

I have a wonderful question for Romney from the moderator on Monday. It will make Fox News heads explode. It is "What did you think when you were called Mitt the Twitt in British papers after you insulted 62,000 Englishmen? "

Americans know Romney was a liar, flip-flopper not qualifed to be president before the debate....this debate just proved it once again.

What Romney was doing was talking down to everyone who was undecided like they were all total idiots and he was the great messiah and schooling them on tax issues.

                                                                                            #130.1 - Thu Oct 18, 2012 7:15 AM EDT

Maybe those companies didn't get run out of business. Maybe they failed on their own with that at the helm? No one ever thought of that did they? I worked in business for about 35 years and have never seen one CEO or supervisor etc.act as spoiled and bratty and inept as Mitt Romney. Many who treated others less badly WERE REMOVED FROM THE JOBS by the boss! In business in order to stay in business you have to use tact, respect, have a vision, a plan. And no matter what your employees are doing they have to be treated with respect. Romneys voters are not paying attention to his personality and actions, they only look at his supposed accounts which he won't show us of course. So they are basing their votes on 3 bad performances when they wouldn't vote for that guy for homecoming king would they? So they think since our country is doing so badly ie Fox News liars, that they need Romney and Ryan to try to run it or be puppets or what? What do the republicans really want? Power, more money which they won't get I guarantee under Romney, or just being able to say we have a republican in the White HOuse. WE did from 2000-2008 too and look what happened. It was not worth it. And I don't think there is anyway possible that Obama won't be reelected. None. Our nation is not that ignorant and stupid!!!

                                                                                                #130.3 - Thu Oct 18, 2012 7:31 AM EDT

Based on what Doc? Didn't you hear the litany of accomplishments Obama has made. Have you paid attention to the stockmarket. Wouldnt it be outstanding if before the election the stockmarket hits 14,000 plus and if possible THE HIGHEST EVER! You guys would swear he was doing that somehow. I pray right now it does. Any other Christian please join me in that. We have a couple of weeks and we ARE CLOSE. But you guys simply refuse to see what is as clear as the NOSE ON YOUR FACE. The reason I am sure is because Fox News is paid to give you guys wrong, corrosive info day after day after day to get you to hate Obama. Why, I have no clue but after the Libya fiasco when they insist Candy Crowley was wrong and Obama not Romney was lying, that seals the deal for me. I don't do lies well. And neither thank goodness does God. God is on Obamas side clearly in this election. Fox News God doesn't abide with lies in case you forgot! YOu just watch and see who is supreme. God isn- not Romney and Fox News. Lets see, Obama gets Osama and unemployment reaches under 8. And Obama won the Nobel Prize. Remember that? Could the stock market reach highest also. Bush did have the highest gas prices ever and still. Check out July 2008. You guys choose to believe lies and you can because you don't p ay attention to facts. Look that up in case you don't know what a fact is.
