Barack Obama looked energized at the second presidential debate, but GOP candidate Mitt Romney mostly stayed with him as the two confronted one another over issues involving immigration, foreign policy, the economy and more. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- If former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney controlled the terms of the debate two weeks ago in Denver, the opposite was true here last night. It was President Obama on offense for much of the night, and it was Romney playing defense. The overall outcome at Hofstra University wasn't as one-sided or decisive as it was two weeks ago. Indeed, the GOP presidential nominee was strong on the economy and litigating Obama's four years in office, and he brought plenty of energy. But just like we saw in Denver, the body language told the real story: You had Republicans, not Democrats, complaining about the moderator; there was the Romney campaign saying afterward, “What we really meant to say was XYZ”; and you saw Obama lingering with the crowd after the debate (when it was Romney who did that two weeks ago). Also, unlike Obama’s performance in Denver, there were some uncomfortable moments for Romney (the exchange on Libya, “binders full of women,” Obama’s my-pension-isn’t-as-big-as-

*** Issue terrain matters: If we learned anything last night, as well as in Denver, it’s that the issue terrain matters. While the first two questions last night -- on a young college student’s job prospects and on gas prices -- were right up Romney’s alley, many more of the following questions were tailor-made for Obama. Pay equality for women. Immigration. George W. Bush. And Obama used those questions, which didn’t surface two weeks ago, to draw his sharpest contrasts with Romney. In fact, a good chunk of the debate was an exercise in micro-targeting, particularly for the president. You saw both Obama and Romney making their pitches to female voters and Latinos, who happen to be two of the most important demographic groups in this election. Yesterday, we wrote that the town-hall debate was an opportunity for Romney to make more inroads with female voters, especially those in the suburbs. Our question: Did a debate that shined a spotlight on the Lilly Ledbetter Act, abortion, and contraception end up helping Romney with women?
*** Libya rattles Romney: Perhaps the sharpest exchange of the night was over Libya, a topic that has dogged the Obama administration over the past few weeks. Obama said, “The day after the attack, governor, I stood in the Rose Garden and I told the American people and the world that we are going to find out exactly what happened, that this was an act of terror.” Romney later interjected, “I want to make sure we get that for the record, because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.” Obama fired back, “Get the transcript.” Well, here is the transcript -- and here’s what Obama said in that Rose Garden speech: “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for.” Now Romney would have been on safer ground if he charged that Obama didn’t call it a coordinated terrorist attack by al Qaeda-affiliated elements, and the Romney spinners after the debate made that point. But Romney used a different term -- “act of terror” -- and Obama DID SAY that. And afterward, Romney appeared rattled after he allowed himself to get caught up on the losing end of a semantic argument. Romney was not the same candidate after that moment.
*** They really, really don’t like each other: In fact, almost all of the exchanges drove this point home: These candidates really don’t like each other. The two men constantly interrupted each other; they circled each other like prizefighters in the boxing ring; and they also even got into each other’s faces. Overall, last night showed that both Obama and Romney are fighters, but they also demonstrated the worst stereotype of why so many people hate politics. It is also worth asking if a debate that featured two VERY alpha-male performances end up turning off swing voting women who would prefer a tad more comity in their politics and less cable-TV/talk radio style bravado. And where was the empathy? From the get-go, it was clear neither candidate knew how to connect with the questioners very well. Take the young man in college who asked the first question. Do you realize neither candidate asked him what he WANTED as a career in after college? WWBCD -- What Would Bill Clinton Do?
*** The crucial question: So will last night’s debate change the contours of the presidential race and slow Romney’s momentum? The answer comes down to this: Have the past two weeks been about Romney getting a second look from voters and seeing a different Romney than has been portrayed over the past year? Or have the past two weeks been about Democrats and swing voters being disappointed in Obama’s first debate performance? If it’s the former, you could argue that the debate didn’t change too much in the race. If it’s the latter, you could argue that it did. Once again, we’ll be paying attention to the polls that come out next week. If the race is a grind-it-out affair, here’s where David Plouffe said things stand, per NBC’s Jamie Novogrod: “We believe that we remain in very strong position in Ohio, in Iowa, in Nevada, in New Hampshire.” The Romney folks aren’t giving up Ohio, but also have Plan Bs on winning Wisconsin and Iowa. The fact is Wisconsin/Iowa combined with Ohio puts Obama over the top. For Romney, he needs three of these four if he doesn’t win Ohio: Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada.
*** On to the final debate: And also next week, on Monday, we’ll have the final presidential debate -- from Boca Raton, FL. And this is a potential problem for Romney. Why? Because it won’t be a conversation about jobs and the economy (where even one instapoll showed Romney winning, even if he lost the entire debate). Instead, it’s a showdown on foreign policy. As conservative pundit Laura Ingraham tweeted last night, “TERRIBLE miscalculation for GOP to agree that final debate wd be on foreign policy. Whose bright idea was THIS when jobs/economy #1 issue?” As we saw last night in the Libya exchange, it is very difficult for a challenger to best an incumbent president on foreign policy. The good news for Romney is that expectations will be low. The bad news is that -- if issue terrain matters -- it’s a foreign-policy debate.

LAST NIGHT:
Romney waffled about HOW he'd PAY for his (20%) $5Trillion tax cut.
But Romney couldn't explain how to pay for his giant tax cut for the rich. He never has. He can't. Bottom line - he will either explode the deficit, or raise taxes on the middle class.
According to the Tax Policy Center, Romney would CUT taxes for those earning more than $1,000,000 a year, by 4.1%. And RAISE taxes on folks earning under $200,000 by 1.2%.
Under Romney's plan, billionaire donor Sheldon Adelson would receive a $2.3 billion tax break.
Romney ALSO wants to extend the Bush tax cuts for Mr. Adelson.
You want to be objective when choosing the President of the United States. You want to coolly and calmly analyze the contenders. You know your criteria. Most importantly, he or she must have your trust, must be intelligent, have a command of facts, remain cool under fire, and a sense of humor is a bonus. You don't have to like the candidate, but it doesn't hurt.
Before last night's debate, most of us already knew who we would choose. We had two starkly different candidates; so different we find it surprising some voters haven't made up their minds. We know there are other candidates - some truly exciting, like Jill Stein - but realistically only a Democrat or Republican can win the Presidency. It's either President Barack Obama or Governor Mitt Romney.
The last thing you want to admit is that your choice is based on something besides qualifications. You view with disdain those voters whose choices are based on irrelevancies like party affiliation or race or sex. You are after all, cool, rational, and intelligent. You don't make your decision based on your visceral reaction to a candidate.
Yeah? Just minutes into the debate and Romney blows himself up with another of his peevish, petulant, and condescending rants, this one directed at Candy Crowley, the moderator. What he said and what I heard are two different things. I heard, "You're not the boss of me, you insolent female. Shut up!"
Romney spent the rest of the evening burnishing his credentials as a rich, rude boor. When he was challenged on this tax cut, and the utter impossibility of it being revenue neutral, he blew us off by saying in so many words - Hey, I'm Mitt Romney, and if I say it's true, then it's true.
No, it's not true. Either Romney can't do arithmetic or he's a liar. Based on past performance, it's both. Pressed for specifics, like his equally math-challenged running mate Paul Ryan, he refuses to identify the changes that he will make to the tax code. Maybe he'll do this or that or hey, how about this, we'll put out a basket of deductions and you can pick and choose what you like. Trust me.
Mountains of evidence unequivocally show we are slowly recovering from the most devastating recession/depression since the Great Depression of the 20's and 30's. This recession/depression is the result of eight years of disastrous Republican policy. No matter, Romney says the President should have fixed their mess in four years. Romney's solution is to go back to the same G.O.P. policies that drove us into near-financial collapse and ruinous debt.
The President had his moments where he ran over his time limits, but when you are debating a guy like Mitt Romney, there's a lot of lies that must be addressed. Indeed, Ms. Crowley busted Romney's chops for his lie about Libya and it didn't slow Romney down one bit. He got into the President's face and demanded his obeisance....."Let me give you some advice. Let me give you some advice!" That's going to work very well when he deals with Vladimir Putin.
There's plenty of reasons for not trusting Romney to lead the country. He lies constantly. He has a sense of entitlement that would embarrass Paris Hilton. He's completely out of touch with the vast majority of Americans. He knows nothing of foreign policy. Good reasons all, but at bottom, I can't stand him.

At least one thing came out of the debate: Candy Crowley is one of the lefty liberals in the MSM that is looking out for Barry and going out of her way to use her position to get him re-elected.

Barry did make a generic reference to “acts of terror” in his speech after the Benghazi terrorist attack. But nowhere in his speech did he EVER label the Benghazi incident a terrorist attack and Crowley’s assertion that he did is simply factually WRONG.
In fact, it was several weeks later that the Barry admin FINALLY admitted what anyone paying the least bit of attention already KNEW: The 9/11 attack in Benghazi was a pre-planned terrorist attack on America.

He Can Run, But He Can't Hide
Well, we sure saw a more fiesty Obama last night. Of course, the bar was kind of low since the guy who showed up last time was a corpse. So I'm sure the Dems are happy that their man decided to honor the process by actually showing some interest in the proceedings. But when you cut through all the smoke, here's the deal: whenever Romney talked about the economy and the dismal record of the last four years, he just cleaned Obama's clock.
And Romney didn't just talk about the economy, he spoke to the issue eloquently and with obvious passion. It was abundantly clear to any viewer that for Romney this election is all about jobs and the economy, and that he was offering the country a chance to change course from Obama's record of failure. He told us that we don't have to settle for what we've been going through the last four years, a notion that resonates viscerally in the gut of every American. And he directly linked the pain so many Americans are experiencing to the policies of the president, policies Romney is committed to changing. It was a virtuoso performance.
But the real buzz in coming days will likely be about the discussion of the Benghazi attack. The president would have us believe that he characterized the Benghazi attack as an act of terrorism in his Rose Garden remarks the next day, and that he was offended by any suggestion that his administration waffled on their assessment of the cause of the attack. In fact, his Rose Garden reference was to generic "acts of terror" and at best his words were ambiguous when viewed in reference to the Benghazi situation.
But let's give the president the benefit of the doubt and stipulate that he characterized the Benghazi attack as an act of terrorism that day. So Mr. President, please explain to us how in subsequent days in appearances on Univision, The View and Letterman you walked that back and said we were still investigating what happened in Benghazi. Then explain to us how in your speech to the U.N. you linked the violence to an offensive video six times. Then explain to us how Ambassador Rice was permitted to make the rounds on the Sunday talk shows to tell us the violence was because of the video.
The fact of the matter is the State Department knew from day one there was no protest outside the building prior to the violence and that the Benghazi episode was a complex attack without precedent in U.S. diplomatic history. Yet even while many news outlets were reporting same, you did not share that information with us and instead fed us a tall tale about a spontaneous demonstration sparked by a video. Then last night you have the nerve to take offense at legitimate questions as to whether your administration was covering up the true cause of the violence??
I'm sorry Mr. President, but it's we the people who are offended by your constant dissembling on this issue. And it's we the people who are also offended by your failed economic policies that have caused us so much pain. That's why Romney not only wins this election, he wins decisively. And last night's debate did nothing to change that outcome.
In the Weeds:
A lot transpired in last night's debate. In fact I needed to watch it more than once to appreciate the incredibly strong performance of our President. I'll comment on the content in a minute, but the interaction between Romney and Candy Crowley was noteworthy.
Romney's treatment of women was reflected in how he treated Ms. Crowley. To put it accurately and bluntly, Romney tried to bully Crowley over the debate rules and expecting more time. At one point Crowley said, "Let's talk about self-deportation." Romney countered with, "No". Acting as if rules did not apply to him, Romney was out of control and finally Ms. Crowley told Romney to "sit down".
Ms. Crowley became a fact-checker. Romney believed the right-wing echo chamber by saying that it took 14 days before President Obama called the Libyan attack an act of terror. In truth, one day later in the Rose Garden President Obama did call the attack an act of terror. Candy said to the governor, "He did, in fact, sir." Romney was caught in a lie.
The most repeated phrase used in the debate was, "Governor that simply is not true." President Obama called out Romney on his lies, without calling him a liar.
Some of Romney's most outrageous comments:
"Hiring teachers does not grow the economy." Yes Governor, it does grow the economy, and provides the added benefit of better educated children.
Romney indicated that as Governor, he wanted to have qualified women in his cabinet and received "binders full of women". Clearly the implication was that at Bain Capital he didn't know qualified women. He worked almost entirely with men. In the Romney world, women are subservient.
The strongest punch came from President Obama: "The suggestion that anybody in my team, whether the Secretary of State, our U.N. ambassador, anybody on my team would play politics or mislead when we lost four of own, Governor, is offensive. That's not what we do. That's not what I do as President, that's not what I do as Commander-in-Chief."
The second strongest punch also came from President Obama: "But I also believe that when he said behind closed doors that 47 percent of the country considered themselves victims, who refuse personal responsibility, think about who he was talking about. Folks on Social Security who have worked all their lives. Veterans who have sacrificed for this country. Students who are out there trying to hopefully advance their own dreams…Soldiers who are overseas fighting for us right now. People who are working hard every day, paying payroll tax, gas tax, but don't make enough income." President Obama clearly highlighted how Romney feels about the middle-class.
Last night Obama owned the debate.
Romney offered up an endless bowl of word salad last night. The Binders of Women was the one that shot up the TWITTERSPHERE. Personally, I thought R$mney's entire 'performance' was - shall we say, SKETCHY!
PS. Why did R$mney bust out of there so fast? Cuz' he knew he got his ass handed to him? Or because being around a bunchof middle class folks makes him THAT uncomfortable? Either way, BAD form!
ROMNEY FALSE: (Romney said there are fewer people working today.)
More people are working than when President Obama came into office in January 2009 - by about 325,000.
5.2 million private sector jobs were created in the last 30 months.
ROMNEY FALSE: (He says 500,000 manufacturing jobs lost).
500,000 manufacturing jobs were CREATED.
ROMNEY FALSE: (He says HE will create 12 million jobs.)
Guess what? Moody's predicts 12 million jobs will be created by 2016 under current policy - testimony to the strong foundation laid by President Obama.
The Moderator
One of these days baseball will get rid of the umpires and use sensors to call balls and strikes. And one of these days political debates will get rid of moderators and use a computer to spit out questions and allocate equal time for responses.
It's pointless for conservatives to whine about the clearly biased performance of Candy Crowley. This game has been stacked against us for years and moderators who use their power to tilt the playing field in favor of their candidate is nothing new. But it does make one wonder how in the world Republicans continue to be party to this farce by signing off on people who turn around and do their best to screw them.
Candy Crowley selected the questions last and the questions she chose clearly betrayed the biases she brought to her role. In particular, the question asking Romney to explain why he was not like George Bush was just off the scale on the bias meter. Blaming George Bush for all manner of evil that afflicts us has been a staple of the Democratic narrative for years. But that is a political narrative and not one that is firmly grounded in facts (e.g., anyone remember that unemployment fell to 4.6% during the Bush years?). Yet Crowley played directly into Democratic hands by accepting a question based on the false premise that Bush is at the root of all our problems. Heck, David Axelrod couldn't have done a better job.
But of course, Axelrod didn't need to do any work. Crowley did it for him,

How does Romney grade "OK" or anything close to OK -- on a fantasy script?
Moderator Candy Crowley actually asked this question, it is right off the Obama/Democratic talking points: "I do attribute much of America's economic and international problems to the failings and missteps of the Bush Administration Since both of you are Republicans, I fear the return to the policies of those years should you win this election. What is the biggest difference between you and George W. Bush. and how do you differentiate yourself from George W. Bush?
And the questions is fine, except it is Obama that has assumed Bush's policies on 1) The wars, 2) On Taxes, 3) On Fed policy 4) And has even added in the biggest entitlement program the the largest raise in taxes ever with Obamacare. Obama has not only deficit spent similar to Bush, he's actually Super-sized it, more than doubling it in fact. So it's unclear why Crowley is making this assumed connection from Romney to Bush when it reality it is Obama that has performed like Bush. As is the usual though, CNN tries to simplify complex issues and performs the same journalistic laziness similar to MSNBC (which doesn't even have journalists) and tries to condense it to a talking point.
So it is quite odd that Crowley would select a question that is really a non-starter, a question that a Democratic operative would come up with rather than a moderate/undecided voter. With Obama. we already have the policies of the Bush administration in place. We never really left them.
Ms. Crowley clearly thought she was a part of the process, injecting herself where she didn't belong, providing considerably more time to Obama than to Romney. She even stated previously that Mr. Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan as running mate a "ticket death wish." She is hardly unbiased, but that is the normal operation procedure that needs to be considered and dealt with by any Republican who enters these debates.
But yet Romney managed the debate well, made many clear and concise points both in describing his plans and on pointing out Obama's failures from his lack of success in the economy, his foreign policy blunders, and his total failure in Benghazi. Mr. Romney stood up well to a flailing and desperate Obama.
Romney has steadily been gaining ground with the voters. He's being seen not as the "rich out of touch corrupt guy" the Democrats have now failed to make his image to be, but a man that has clear plans, can work with Congress, can get things done and preserve our freedoms, and that in fact is Presidential. This is especially true when contrasted himself with Obama's multiple levels of failures.

If there is anyone out there who are still undecided, I would urge them to check out that segment on Libya and how Romney handled that. He had all the right wing talking points and his expression showed him for what he is when challenged, a cold blooded CEO, who could care less what happens to the workers when he sold them down the river.

I disagree with the authors' assessment that President Obama didn't connect. I thought he did beautifully. His closing remarks about the 47% were quite moving actually.
Throughout the evening he laid out perfectly the differences between himself and Mitt. He spoke clearly about what Mitt and the GOP platform was and it isn't pretty.
It's why he won the debate. President Obama, that is.
Mitt was challenged, hard. And like all bullies, when you push back, they crumble.
Mitt crumbled. He looked weak. It was in his eyes. All night long.

The most serious (and disconcerting) news of the evening for the Obama team had to be CNN, Fox and (now just recently this morning) MSNBC clips covering the undecided voter rooms. Across those networks, it seemed many more moved in the direction of voting for Governor Romney last night, quipping the President did not spell out his plans for moving forward at all.
I guess you can try to land haymakers all you want and in the end, it's about the jobs (or lack thereof).

Much more entertaining debate last night that's for sure. The snap polls gave a slight edge to the President (by 7 points in each case...46-39 CNN and 37-30 CBS). Definitely not the overwhelming win that Romney had two weeks ago according to the polls. But a small victory and a big improvement for the President. FR brings up the million dollar question...will it impact the polls? My own opinion is not much. I think things have kinda settled in and this was not an overwhelming performance for anyone. I stick by my range of somewhere between Romney winning by 1 and the President winning by 2-3. It's gonna be close!

U.S. builders started construction on single-family homes and apartments in September at the fastest rate since July 2008, a further indication that the housing recovery is strengthening.
The Commerce Department said Wednesday that builders broke ground on homes at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000 in September. That's an increase of 15 percent from the August level.

Immediately upon learning of the deaths of our State Department personnel in Benghazi, Libya, Mitt Romney and his aides crassly sought to contrive a strategy to use this national tragedy to their political advantage. The fundamental of their strategy was to feign indignation that the Obama administration was either unaware of or hiding the fact that terrorism lay behind the event.
While it would be cynical in the extreme if Romney knew this to be untrue, it is astounding that a candidate for President of the United States is so obviously and sadly ignorant of the facts. As the debate moderator uneasily pointed out, President Obama acknowledged the part terrorism played in the events at Benghazi the DAY AFTER the attack. Yet, here we have Mitt Romney attempting to concoct a political scheme BASED ENTIRELY UPON HIS (Romney's) OWN IGNORANCE OF RECENT FACTS THAT COMPLETELY REFUTE HIS NARRATIVE.
Folks, Mitt Romney is not psychologically fit to be President. Nor is he sufficiently rigorous to handle the solemn, complicated, and sometimes intractable demands placed upon our Command in Chief. The office of the President demands a calm demeanor. It requires a person willing and able to command the facts. Mitt Romney does not display these traits. On the contrary, he has shown, again and again, a propensity to jump to conclusions and take momentous steps without full consideration or even possession of facts that are readily available.
The upcoming final Presidential debate will focus on foreign policy. Both Romney and Ryan have demonstrated utter ineptness in this crucial area of Presidential responsibility. While Romney might well lead the Small Business Administration and Ryan serve in some accounting capacity, neither has the over-arching perspective, wisdom, honesty, and intellect required to be Commander in Chief.
Hey, Joe, why are we playing semantics, here? Why do we need code words like "Act Of Terror" for incidents like the death of Ambassador Stevens? Do you think it makes any difference to his family and friends if you call it an "Act Of Terror" or not? Does it make the events of that day any less tragic?
President Obama was right about one thing...you don't play politics with something like that. President Reagan and the first President Bush seemed to understand that as they chose not to pounce on President Carter when the mission to rescue the hostages in Iran failed. Mr. Romney doesn't seem to get that point as, if you'll recall, he pounced at the first sign of trouble and spoke out of turn before anybody even could confirm that Ambassador Stevens was killed.
If you'll recall, it was Congressional Republicans who just one week after the incident said that any discussion of the decrease in funding for security for our embassies was merely an attempt to score "cheap political points". Mr. Romney doesn't seem to care, though, and wants to use it like a football. That's a poor thing to do when compared to the man who is President and Commander-In-Chief.
What a ridiculous statement. Wouldn't a cover-up suggest that we were never supposed to even hear about the entire incident in the first place?
In the real world, we learn all the facts and then reach a conclusion. Just because that conclusion matches what you said on Day One it does not validate the case for "Cowboy Diplomacy".
Before the CBS flash poll went up, my wife and I thought the debate was a tie. Then the poll came up (from undecided voters) about 1/3 for Obama, about 1/3 for Romney, and about 1/3 said it was a tie...
Since Obama FAILED to capture any momentum and turn the tide away from Romney's increasing support, I'd say Romney won (on a macro basis).

The only takeaway I got from the focus group participants, was how ill informed they seemed. It was obvious, especially the women, they were not students of the election process, the candidates and their past histories. Any woman who has followed this process from the beginning and paid attention to what Romney and the republicans think of women in general, should know they don't have their best interests at heart....on any topic.
The lack of critical thinking skills was evident and points to the need for our citizens to be better educated if we are to succeed going into the next generations.

Strong debate, touching a wide range of topics. In my view point, it was a clear win by the President.
Points for the president:
1. Comparing Mitt's "trust me" plan on taxes to an investor that wants to borrow 8 trillion dollars but doesn't want to provide details. "That is a sketchy deal and Mitt you wouldn't buy that. Neither should the American people."
2. Obama's presidentail handling of the Libya question, practically scolding Romney in his stool for asserting that Obama politicized the attack.
3. Obama's off the cuff but meaninful comment - "Read the transcript" Refering to his describing the Bengahzi attack as "An act of Terror." The moment was made more poignant by Mitt stopping, pointing to the supposed gaffe and highlighting that Obama made no so such remark. The look on Mitt's face when Candy told the truth was priceless.
4. Obama scored on his closing arguements, reminding us to read the transcript when Romney called 47% of American's takers, victims and unwilling to take responsibility for their lives.
5. Obama scored on the question's asked about immigration. He scored when he responded to the disheartened man about what he has done to improve the economy. When Obama highlighted his accomplishments, Mitt's response about the economy not being good enough sounded shrill and weak.
Romney couldn't connect with the voters, he wouldn't answer their questions and instead veered off into scripted talking points. Don't know how single parenting became a response about gun control laws.
Perhaps in an attempt to reach out to the common man Mitt admitted that he purused "binders full of women" while governor. Seriously though, in his response to the women's issue he seemed to belittle women by mentioning that he let his chief of staff go home early, "You know so she could cook dinner." Seemed a bit dismissive to me. Obama's response encompassing a wide range of women/economic issues was better.
The only point where Romney had a good talking point was his meme about "We can do better, America deserves better. Don't settle...blah, blah, blah." However once again he refuses to say how he will grow the economy.
No knockouts but Romney was stunned and hurt by the "Read the transcript" comment and when the audience was reminded about his disregard for the 47%. Prize fight analysis - Obama wins 7 rounds, Mitt wins 3 rounds, 2 are a tie.

Terrific analysis and posts, fellow liberals. Great debate last night. President Obama won clearly and the flash polls back that up.
As Howard Fineman pointed out last night, the Obama team was quick to hit the spin room without talking points--each talked differently about the debate, President Obama's answers, what they felt was most effective. The Romney team was slow to arrive in the spin room but they came with talking points, each saying nearly the same thing. It was evident in the Romney team's demeanor that they knew President Obama took Mitt to the cleaners.
Obama had more enthusiasm then I thought he could muster to hide his dismal record. The 47% remark at the end was diffused by Romney before he made it.
It is clear Obama knows nothing about the economy or jobs and Romney came across as someone who does. Obama knows nothing about energy and Romney does. Obama has messed up foreign policy so bad Romney can't do worse.
All that was clear last night.

I was really happy to hear something about immigration last night. As I've been saying for a long time around here, the best way to deal with immigration is to start the line with those already following the rules. It was really refreshing to hear Romney say that, promote legal immigration by putting them first, change immigration laws requiring lawyers (just think about how much that costs and who's paying for those lawyers), stop illegal immigration at the borders, and give a path to citizenship for the kids of illegal immigrants. I really liked Romney's idea to put green cards on college degrees to keep the best and the brightest (that we recruit to go to our universities) here and get them working for US. I completely agree that we should cherry pick the best from best and get them to create here. Absolutely agree!
When the President noted that illgeal immigration is at a 20 year low, it made me think of all of the articles I've read over the last few years. The articles noted that individual States were enacting new immigration laws and enforcing their laws, that the DOJ was actively putting injunctions against the states to stop them from enforcing their immigration laws, and that our economy has been so weak over the last 3-4 years that Americans have been taking 2-3 part time jobs to make ends meet- that means that there are a lot less open positions and that illegals are having a harder time getting those jobs. So in the end our economy isn't supporting them as freely as was the case a few years earlier, so they go home. So I don't see where the President was going with current policy is working.
That's two debates Romney has lost. The first time he lost by lying throughout the evening.
Last night he lost on points.
What was most clear? Romney showed the disrespect he has for women, both by the "binders full of women" comment, and his disrespect for Ms. Crowley.
And, he demonstrated, yet again, how unsuitable he is for high office. He expects to be deferred to, since he is, of course, the "great" Mitt Romney. He becomes petty and boorish when he does not receive the preferential treatment he demands.

Candy Crowley was the biggest loser in this debate. Moderators are not supposed to insert their two cents into the discussion, but she clearly did .
The big winner of this debate was Mitt Romney. The central issues facing voters are the economy and jobs. Mr. Romney exposed Mr. Obama's abysmal record on both and Obama's lack of a concrete plan to address either. In contrast, Mr Romney put forth his clear record of economic success, in both the private and public sector,and a concrete plan to get our economy back on track and create private sector jobs. In addition, voters will now be demanding specific answers about why our Ambassador was not properly protected in Benghazi and who it was that made that call. Questions Mr. Obama never answered and he will have to face again in the foreign policy debate less than 7 days away.
As for Mr. Obama,he had a better showing than his abysmal performance in the first debate, but his first debate performance was so bad that simply showing up and talking with a modicum of relevance was better.Which is just about all he did last night.In fact, most of what he said was a repeat of the first debate. He just said it with a little more passion. Big whoop! Over all, so far Mr. Obama has looked every bit the amateur he really is. When the dust settles and the votes are cast Romney will win.

NBC is showing it's colors ... again. I actually watched this debate, and I would call it a draw. The dems were desperate for Obama to have a win, so the liberal media is saying he won. But the polls are pretty much showing a tie.
And, as moderator, this Candy person should not have corrected what either one said. Her job is to coordinate time and questions, not to make political commentary. And Obama did not call it an organized terrorist attack that first day. He did blame it on the video and an uncoordinated uprising. That's really unimportant. What's important in the Libya situation is that the state dept ignored multiple request for additional security from our people stationed there.

I said yesterday that I didn't expect the Libya nontroversy to come up in the debate. I was wrong, but I'll bet Mitt Romney wishes I had been right. Obama did well on many other things as well, but he demolished Romney on Romney's craven attempt to politicize the issue. The only memorable line from the first debate was Romney's ridiculous "Big Bird" comment. The most memorable line in this second debate was Obama telling Romney to his face that Romney's insinuations about Libya were offensive.
The AP article on the debate followed the time-honored media doctrine of the False Equivalency. It mentioned that Obama had said that he had called the Benghazi attack an act of terrorism the day after it happened and that Romney claimed Obama had said nothing about terrorism for two weeks. The article dared not mention that it is a fact that Obama was right and that Romney was just making stuff up again. The usual "he-said-he-said" treatment.
Candy Crowley deserves credit for pointing out the facts, and she got a round of applause from the audience for doing it. Her violation of False Equivalency dogma may have angered some of her fellow journalists.
BTW: Chris Matthews mentioned that the NY Times reported yesterday that there was, in fact, a protest in Benghazi about the anti-Islam video the day of the assault. Why is this not being reported? Could it be that the corporate media story is now set in concrete about how it was clear from Day One that it was a terror attack alone and there were not protests?
What is Obama's plans for the next four years? Take a peek at the current France situation after implementing O's type of tax plan. How is that working out for their leader and more importantly its citizens?

The reality is, Elliot, that there were no private capital funds available for a managed bankruptcy. No one on Wall Street, which had problems of its own, and not even Bain Capital, stepped forward to offer bankruptcy support for GM. Without such support, the "managed" bankruptcy was doomed.
Romney had to know this, if he actually knows anything at all. Even the chairman of Ford knew it when he went to Capitol Hill to plead for bailout funds for GM and Chrysler because he knew that if they went down, Ford would go down, too, as the supply chain became disrupted.
If Romney didn't know this, it merely proves he is incompetent.

There were more than 40 organizations involved with the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus (also bipartisan) as the lead sponsor.
They did the research and put together the binder full of women qualified for all the different cabinet positions, agency heads, and authorities and commissions. They presented this binder to Governor Romney when he was elected.

Romney showed his skill at dodging a question on that one. He was asked about what he'd do concerning equal pay for women. Judging from his answer, he apparently will hire "binders full of women" for his administration. That wouldn't help much with women not interested in working for a Romney administration. But how would feel about being Romney's Secretary of State, Feisty? Get your name in one of those binders and you'll have it made.

For quite some time polls have said the majority of people do not think the country is on the right track. What the debates did reveal was Mr Romney is not the ogre the president and his minions have portrayed him to be. Will it be about who lies? Probably not, they both lie. Romney still can't explain the math of his economic plan. When pressed for specifics on how he would change tax deductions, Romney said 'pick a number' for the amount of deductions one would get under his plan. Romney chose $25000 dollars as the example on the limit on itemized deductions that one could use for any of the deductions they wanted with the $25000 being the limit. But still no mention of what deductions would be there for the average taxpayer to choose from. Plus, what will this 'pick a number, any number' truly be as a limit for deductions be? Inquiring minds want to know!
And Romney is touted as a 'good' businessman with an economic plan like that?

Another strong debate by Romney and another debate where Obama could not defend his first term. Add to that a "moderator" (Crowley) who decided to state that Romney was wrong DURING THE DEBATE only to apologize later on CNN that Crowley was in fact incorrect.
I have been watching debates for 36 years with the first debate I watched being Carter/Ford in 1976. And I have NEVER seen a moderator who interjected "facts" into a debate? Especially incorrect facts. Unbelievable...... Can we now agree that media bias is not only present but common?
Regardless Romney still won that debate and the reason is simple: All you have to do is tell the american people the Obama record which is clearly a failure.
1) After 4 years no more jobs than when Obama took office.
2) After 4 years the unemployment rate near 8% is the same.
3) GDP FALLING this year from last year and last year from the previous year
5) After 4 years almost 50% more people on Food Stamps
6) After 4 years we have significantly more people in Poverty
7) Obama has approved 62% LESS off-shore oil drilling permits, and 33% LESS on-shore oil drilling permits, than the same time period in the Bush administration. Which is partly to blame for gas prices doubling during the Obama administration
8) A "stimulus" that didn't stimulate with billions going to green energy companies that ultimately filed bankruptcy.
9) Shovel-ready jobs for the stimulus that were ultimately not "shovel-ready"
10) The Libya fiasco and an administration that found it more beneficial to go to Las Vegas the day after an ambassador was killed rather than caring enough to find out what happened.
And the list of failures from Obama can continue for quite some time. Romney called out Obama on this and gave the people a solution. The sad part is Obama can't and didn't defend his last four years. Did you notice how many times Obama said what he "will do" if reelected? Sorry, you had four years. Don't tell me what you "will do" - you should have already done it.
And to tell us you need four more years to "fix the economy". Haven't you done enough damage? How much MORE damage can you do in four more years? The answer? Significant. It is quite likely our country could not survive four more years of Obama failure. Sorry, when you fail you get replaced. Works that way in the private sector and works that way for the presidency. When you fail in your FIRST four years you get replaced.

The one theme that permeated the comments made by Governor Romney was his held view that people are commodities for enterprise. This was exemplified by his '..binders full of women..' comment. I almost expected him to say, ' some of my best friends are women...'. Although, it's hard to imagine him having a collegial relationship with anyone who works, for him, female or not.

In other words, he was implying in general about terrorism, not specifically about Benghazi. Strange that in the same speech he didn't even mention the US embassy attack in Egypt.
How many acts were committed in Benghazi? I know of only one and that was the killing of Ambassador Stevens.
Oh and by the way, Obama never answered the gentleman's question about Libya. Crowley didn't even press Obama to answer the man's question.

Several times during the debate Romney's stance was similar to a already beaten Wille E Coyote. He looked stunned and staggered by Obama's offense but ready to pounce. When he pounced he missed and hit the tarmac. Romney tried to hammer the presidents record of the last four years while tap dancing around the land mines of the complete and utter lack of any cooperation from the GOP. It was very apparent. If you believe that Romney who's entire business career has been about cutting jobs, cutting workers benefits, dismantling corporations, shipping production overseas, getting government subsidies, playing fast and loose with the tax laws, and then walking off with a huge profit will be able to put this economy in the black I am sorry you're wrong. If you believe that Romney's health care plan should be called Obamacare and is bad for America you're wrong . The entire Affordable Health-care Act is nothing more than a almost identical twin of Governor Romney's Massachusetts health-care plan. Massachusetts did not go bankrupt and fall apart of it. In fact the plan works as has the parts of Obamacare that have been implemented are working. They have little effect on small businesses because truely small businesses don't provide jobs that provide health-care. 97% of them don't. Romney's tax reform is not reform it's a tax increase by removing deductions from individuals and corporations. Yes the American corporate tax rate is higher than other countries but very few companies pay anywhere near the high end of that rate. Hundreds of them pay no tax at all. Big companies like GE PAY NO TAXES AT ALL. You could cut their rate to 1% it would not matter because they pay 0%. Notice Romney did not say which individuals deductions he was going to cut. Removing deductions and loopholes are a tax increase because unless you already pay at the maximum rate you willl have more of a taxable income. Romney's claim that he would remove all capital gains taxes from individuals shows how fast and loose he is playing with the facts. Middle class people pay little in the way of capital gains. The profit on the sale of their home is already protected if the reinvest that profit by buying another home. After a certain age it is totally protected already. Middle class people have little or no savings that are exposed to capital gains. People keep little in a passbook type savings account. Their real savings arein tax deferred 401Ks that already have protection from capital gains taxes.If you believe that Romney has a plan to get tough with China you could not be more deluded. China has been a avid Romney's Bain Capital business partner. Look at what they are doing right now in Illinois. Shutting down a American auto parts plant and shipping those jobs to China. Don't buy that blind trust BS. Romney appoints the trust's trustee and can remove him anytime. That trustee happens to be R. Bradford Malt, Romney's personal attorney. 2010 the Romneys invested $10 million in the start-up of the Solamere Founders Fund, co-founded by their eldest son, Tagg, and Spencer Zwick, Romney’s onetime top campaign fund-raiser; Solamere is now in the Ann Romney blind trust. Malt has said he invested in Solamere without consulting Mitt or Ann and explained he liked Solamere because of its diversified approach and because he knew the founders and had confidence in them. If you believe that you are truly naive and gulliable. Romney put assests in his wife's name to avoid exposure to government oversight. He uses his personal lawyer as trustee so he can control his investments directly and use attorney client priviledge to hide that control. The investment in Solamere was simply a way to pass assets to Tagg without paying taxes.
Obama's performance and his plethora of lies and deflection is proof positive why he need to go home come January. So no, his performance last night was not an improvement.
What astounds me are those on this thread and elsewhere who would willingly re-elect a President who lies not only about his opponent, but about his Administration and the events that have happened under his watch. People have said that we need a "businessman" to lead our nation. That is a short-sighted thought. In business there is either an owner making all the decisions or a CEO with a Board of Directors making the decisions. (Despite the lip service they pay it, Boards are not really too interested in what the stockholders want or say). The object of a company is to make money for the owner(s), CEOs, Board members and, to a lesser extent, the stockholders. The public, in general, is just something to be manipulated, used or ignored.
Within our nation there are millions of people and our elected officials have the duty to do what is best for the majority of those citizens. The duty of the president is to be responsive to the people of the nation.
It is NOT about the CEO [read: president] or the Board [read; Congress / Senate] or the stockholders [read: the 1%] making huge amounts of money at the expense of the 99% of the citizens.
Mitt Romney has made his disdain for the middle class clear when he thought he was out of earshot of them and was with his own kind.

Romney did an excellent job and won the debate so I'm not looking to blame anyone for anything. I thought the moderator sucked as usual, and reports are she interrupted Romney many more times then Obama and overall Obama like Biden was granted more time, but even with that I still think Romney won the debate, Obama did a much better job then last time but even the polls that show people thought he won overall (most show a close tie) showed Romney with a commanding lead when it came to talk about the economy which just happens to be Americans #1 issue. Overall I thought it was a great debate with wins and loses on both sides, as far a changing of any opinions or moving independents a certain direction I think again Romney did better on that front and Obama did more fire up the base type rhetoric.
Last night our President showed leadership and facts. He also showed what an entirely empty suit Romney is. I couldn't believe Romney kept saying I'm going to add jobs - I've done this before; I know how. Clearly he doesn't as he couldn't give any specifics as to how he plans to do so.
I found it interesting that, when talking about increasing jobs, one of Mitt's ideas was to go to other countries and find graduates with degrees in techincal fields then help them become citizens. Why not train our own citizens, Mitt? Did ya ever think of that????
Anyone notice how, after the meeting ended, Mitt was surrounded and comforted by his family. But, if you looked, President Obama was deluged by the crowd who wanted to talk with him; shake his hand; be close to him.

Romney offered a solution to our economic problems? Really? Tax cuts of 20%, not paid for by cuts in deductions, will magically produce a balanced budget and growth? Really?
This is the worst sort of lie. This is not a solution. It is a man trying to buy the election with promises that do not add up.
The tax cuts of 20% amount to much more in reduced government tax revenue than the addition to tax revenue from eliminating all deductions would. Then, Romney doubles down and says no middle class tax payer would pay any more taxes than they do now.
All those 47% who currently pay no federal income tax would see no reduction in tax under Romney's 20% tax cut plan (20% of 0= 0). Would any of these people see any of their deductions eliminated? If they did, many would pay a higher amount of tax.
Many middle class taxpayers pay Federal income tax without their deductions exceeding the standard deduction. A 20% tax cut for these people will only be made up for with cuts in government spending. Cuts in government spending at this time will increase the number of unemployed.
Romney said the top 5% would not pay a lower tax. Does that mean that the 20% across-the-board tax rate cuts will not apply to them? There certainly are not enough deductions in this group to pay for a 20% tax cut. Will this giveaway to the rich just add to the deficit? We can borrow the money back from them to finance their tax cut. How does that make any sense?
Romney's numbers do not add up. That is why he is so vague in his answers to "how are you going to pay for this Mitt?"

It would not be surprising that Romney would lie (about this) to further his political ambitions. It IS surprising (even shocking) that Romney is so factually inaccurate. This is especially true when one considers these are recent events.
Obama inherited an economy on the verge of becoming another Great Depression. The entire financial system was in peril.
In 2008, despite a $120 billion stimulus and cuts in the discount rate from 5% to .5%, the economy continued to spiral downward shrinking 7.5% in 3rd quarter and 8.5% in 4th quarter (annual rates). Bush got a bank bailout of $700 billion to try to save the banks from all the bad debt resulting from the housing bust. Homeowners saw the equity in their homes evaporate. Stock owners watched as their stock equity was cut in half (by March 2009). The housing industry collapsed from 2 million homes built in 2007 to less than 500,000 in 2008. 800,000 workers were losing their jobs each month. The auto industry saw sales plummet as $4/gallon gasoline drove car buyers away from their top-selling gas guzzling SUV's.
The economy was an ugly sight. Circuit City went into bankruptcy, but no bank or private equity firm stepped forward to save them. Would any firm have stepped forward to save Chrysler or GM?
And on Obama's inauguration day 2009, Republican leaders met to plot their strategy, "Make OBAMA fail." Try to block the stimulus, try to stop the auto bailout, try to block anything Obama wanted to do to save the economy. This is how Republicans in Congress responded to our time of crisis.
We deserved better than this Republican game plan.
Obama came through for us and saved our economy from financial ruin. We are still recovering despite the "best" (worst) efforts of Republicans to slow the recovery down by blocking a needed infrastructure bill and a jobs bill Pres. Obama asked for last year.

Which puts me squarely in the mainstream. I simply point out how the media's concept of the mainstream is not the same as the peoples'. The media tends to be more liberal and more socially progressive than regular people. Another example of this would be the issue of gun control where the mainstream media is very pro-gun control where as it seems a majority of citizens do not support further controls (in this case I would be outside the mainstream).
Doesn't matter much because, at the risk of inserting yet another "4" to this meaningless drivel, even Ryan's budget doesn't balance till 2040 -- or thereabouts.

Did I hear right? I thought I heard Romney say he would eliminate income tax on capital gains. If true, this would be a much bigger gift to the ultra-rich than reducing the top tax rate. He tried to paint it as a break for the middle class, but the fact is that very few middle and working class taxpayers have significant income from interest and capital gains, and most of those who do have money invested in the stock market and bonds do it in their IRA's and 401b plans, which are already exempt from income tax until the funds are withdrawn after retirement. There is no conceivable justification why income derived from interest and capital gains by those who have sufficient wealth to invest should pay a lesser tax rate on it than less wealthy individuals who derive their income in the form a paycheck from a job.

To say that Romney "stumbled" is idiotic. On the Libya issue, Romney was just shocked as the President just lied to 70 million people again! He was in shock and wanted to get clarification from the President. The President made a teleprompter speech honoring our military and mentioned terrorism. He DID NOT say anything about Benghazi in that speech. He did not say anything about Benghazi being a terrorist attack until 14 days after it happened and everyone in his administration was saying for days that it was a response to the YouTube video! Those are the facts folks and ALL of the media is confirming just that today. And, it is Obama that made it political by misleading the American people for days his political career from a terrorist attack on his watch that killed four Americans that should have had more security on 9/11.
Please do not vote for a man that will lie like that repeatedly to get elected.

The moderator was obviously biased and gave Obama more time, let him run over her and continue speaking while she strongly cut Romney off. Then when she chose sides on the Libyan issue and said that Obama did mention terrorism regarding the Libyan issue, she was out of line. She later corrected herself but it way too late. She said that in front of 50 to 70 million people! Her correction will never get to that many people. She should never moderate a debate ever again.

The debates thus far have revealed that Willard Mitt Romney is far worse than the ogre we initially thought him to be.
The first two debates have revealed that Romney is a liar, a panderer, a flip- flopper and a bully. They have shown us that he has no manners, no integrity and worst of all, no plan. Unless you call tricking Americans with more trickle-down nonsense a plan.
The third debate plays to Romney's major weakness: his lack of foreign policy, foreign relations and national security experience, knowledge and ability. Stay tuned for Romney to have his patrician nose bloodied again next week.

Conservatives do not seem to realize that situations like this do not always present themselves logically. It often DOES take days to analyze and discover all of the issues in play.
Demands for immediate satisfaction, statements from opposing candidates in an election unrelated to the situation, claims of responsibility by all manner of forces can all disrupt and even destroy efforts to find the facts.
Romney was not privy to all of the working of American security and administrative negotiation. He had no business speaking without the facts. He may have even made the situation worse.
As it turns out, the situation may indeed have been a combination of all the forces that have been attributed to it. The video as the instigation, the attack as the outcome, the deaths as a result. These events are not solved overnight any more that a murder is solved in the first day.

The NY Times reported yesterday that the video DID play a role in the attack. Ambassador Stevens' father and the mother of one the the security guards who died have pleaded not to turn the attacks into a political issue. Stevens' father said it was "abhorrent" and that the security professionals should be left alone to do their investigation. The security guard's mother said "I don't trust Romney" because of Romney's cynical attempts to exploit the issue.
But those please obviously have fallen on deaf ears. And dumb minds. The more Romney tries to exploit this, the more damage he does to himself.
It's no wonder the Republicans are attacking the moderator in the debate. Moderate and moderator are not words in their no-compromise philosophy. They are so far from moderate that they don't recognize it a at all.
We don't need to go that far. We just need to look in our own history and see what happened when the tax rates were as high as Obama is now proposing.

Here are two places where Obama outright lied (other than Libya). One, he stated that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms. That is completely untrue. They do not. And everyone knows this from past debates about Planned Parenthood. Two, The absurd notion that drilling permits have increased under Obama. The truth is permits for offshore oil were cut by 62% and by 30% on land. I say “lied” instead of “misled,” because Obama knew he was lying about these things. He knew it, and lied anyway. Everything Obama said regarding oil and energy was completely untrue. Especially when it comes to what he said about oil leases.
Obama loves to tout that he ended the war in Iraq like he said he would, which isn’t really true. Candidate Obama said that he would bring the troops home by the summer of 2010. In fact, the troops came home on Pres. Bush’s timeline, negotiated long before Obama. The Status of Forces Agreement was ratified in 2008 and it stated “All the United States Forces shall withdraw from all Iraqi territory no later than December 31, 2011.” So, Obama didn’t have anything at all to do with the ending of the Iraq war.

Explosive, confrontational, combatitve. A true illustration of conflicting ideology. Romney stuck with his strategy from the 1st debate that dominated, while Obama formulated an aggresive plan (proven by Biden) and won this debate. If there was any doubt the momentum from the 1st debate was stopped after Biden, it is guaranteed now.
Romney was on defence a majority of the time, a weakness to his formula. Romney said 'I have a track record running companies and as Govenor. I Will balance it out' (YET will not say how) I agree with several conservative ideology, but I can't see how anyone on the GOP who is not a top 1% income earner is OK with this.
Also want to conclude this post with Obama's Zinger at the conclusion. I agreed with MSNBC pundints, perfectly timed and delivered. I anxiously await the presidents final knockout blow to Romney!

The UN ambassador was ALWAYS careful to note that the administration's conclusion about the role of the video was TENTATIVE, and not definite. Some of the sloppy journalists with CNN and other "mainstream" corporate media tend to leave out that fact. But as it turns out, the NY Times reported yesterday that the video may in fact have motivated the attack after all.
The situation is murky and complicated, and it should be left to security professionals to make the final determination. But wingnuts like Disgustus won't stop trying to exploit it despite the pleas made by the parents of two of the victims.

The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and
shocking attack. We're working with the government of Libya to secure our
diplomats. I've also directed my administration to increase our security at
diplomatic posts around the world. And make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.
Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all

He was a role model to all who worked with him and to the young diplomats who aspire to walk in his footsteps.
Along with his colleagues, Chris died in a country that is still striving to

Americans is fresh, but our memories of them linger on. I have no doubt that their legacy will live on through the work that they did far from our shores and in the hearts of those who love them back home.
Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked
the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks. We mourned with the families who were lost on that day. I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate
sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed. And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.

After reading the transcripts and stories on the debate last night I found that it pretty much went as I expected it to go. A liberal moderator, and a president that could not afford another lack luster appearance like the first debate.
I am not overly thrilled with either candidate. Those who follow these boards know that my posts generally lean towards conservative values, but I vote for the person that I feel is best able to handle the tasks ahead. In the up coming election my choice has become clear. I will vote for Romney/Ryan, but hear me out. The last 4 years actually more like the last 7 years have been very tough on America, not only economically, but socially at home and abroad as well. Several factors have gone into my decision and I have thought it out very carefully. The last 4 years have not met the expectations that were set by the President when he was elected. He has not kept most of his promises, he has not really contributed to any type of a recovery, and he continues to divide the country by race and economic standing at a time when all America should be pulling together to heal our tattered Republic! We cannot continue to spend our way out of debt, that will never be realistic. We cannot afford to create an endless breadline of social programs nor throw money at every problem that arises. We need to tighten our belts, roll up our sleeves and get to work restoring our nation. This I believe will never happen under our current President.
The tax code has long been a major problem in America. Many have spoken of the need for meaningful reforms to it in order to make it understandable for the average American so they do not need a lawyer or an accountant to fill out their taxes and gain their rightful and due credits and deductions. Romney wants to overhaul the tax code, to make changes for everyone that will make it easier to prepare and file their taxes. Yes the rates for the top 1% will fall, but so will the rates for the other 99%. Deductions and loop holes that will be closed will probably effect the upper 50% the most because they are in the best position to exploit them. His detractors say that he is vague about which deductions and loop holes will be effected, but then again this is a plan, not an actual bill to be set before congress. Romney is a successful businessman who has experience as the governor of a state, far more experience than the current President had when seeking office. The President has had to face harsh realities since taking office. He has had to realize that his power as President has boundaries that despite his best efforts, cannot be crossed. Gitmo is only one example of this as is Afghanistan. He had to come to the realization that bringing terrorists into this country for trial was far more dangerous than the benefits of public trials in civilian courts. He has also come to the conclusion that cutting and running from Afghanistan would only create another power void for not only the Taliban, but every other terrorist organization and sponsor state to exploit! He has learned that the term Ally does not necessarily mean friend especially when it comes to Pakistan. He still has a long way to go before he understands the balances of power in the world and how to navigate them. He has surrounded himself with like minded academics to be his advisers only to find out that to balance the theory, you also need real life experience in the way things, like the economy actually work. Most importantly he has yet to learn that you cannot rely on a small percentage of the population or business alone to provide the resources to heal our financial woes. When Obama came into office he did make attempts at bi-partisanship, however these were soon slapped down by the ultra liberal left that was in control of the House and Senate after his inauguration. Since he has taken the party line and in effect alienated half the country in the process. America has always embraced it's Presidents, of both parties, until such time as they betray our trust. I find this missing in the presidency of Barrack Obama. I find the country has not rallied behind him to support his ideas nor his policies concerning the rest of the world. The world leaders themselves, after having so much positive anticipation of his election, have begun to ignore him and discount him as irrelevant. Though I do not care for Romney and his rhetoric much, it is time for a change. Hopefully Romney will do a better job of reconciling the nation and work with congress not despite it to lead us into a better place. The last 4 years have been an experiment that I hope we all learned from and can take the lessons learned forward to a better tomorrow.

She constantly helped Obama out, by redirecting audience question to another form to allow Obama more time to answer question. Cindy Crowley interrupted Romney repeatedly during his two minute response and changed the question. Obama was given up to four minutes more to respond than Romney..
When Romney nailed Obama with direct questions regarding failed policies and administrative practices, Obama went off on other tangents and issues rather than directly answering the questions. Obama was playing to the audience and lecturing rather than answering.. Why Obama wants another term as President is beyond me.. Anyone who love the sound of their voice that much should be a College Lecturer.
Romney directly asked Obama to explained 2008 campaign promises and immigration promises unkept, with total control of Congress during the first 2 1/2 years of his presidency.. How did the President respond.. Change the subject and move on to healthcare.. No explanation about the 7+ Trillion added to the national debt. No explanation about promised immigration bills that never happened. No explanation about another projected 4 Trillion added to the national debt over the next four years.. No explanation as to why it took the President two weeks to decide our embassy attack in Libya was a terrorist attack, when the Ambassador was pleading for Marine assistance and his pleas went ignored by the President.
No, like it or not, Obama was given extra help from the commentator during this debate and he still didn't answer the hard questions about his failed first term policies.

Like it or not, Obama cannot get our national debt under control. Why? Because in four years he has not submitted a budget or plan to do so. Why is Romney a better choice?
Romney can balance the budget. Why? Because he has balance budgets in the corporate world and as Governor.. He has a proven track record to get the job done.
Romney does fight for women's rights. Why? Because, in the corporate world and as Governor, Romney advocated women into all levels of responsibility..
Romney can get unemployment under control. Why? As a businessman and Governor, Romney stressed education an hiring practices that created job growth.
Romney has a history of working across the isle with both parties to create and stablilize job markets, economic solvency.. As Governor, Romney not only balanced the states budget, by working with both parties; his state was ranked #1 in education. This lowered unemployment and crime in the state. Better educated people have better jobs, feel better about themselves and don't need to steal to get ahead.. It's not rocket science, Folks!..
Bottom line, Obama is a great Orator... However, that's all he is "smoke and mirror" speeches.. His actions don't back up his words.... Romney has the "hands on" experience in the private sector and in government to make the changes necessary to turn this country around; and, pull it back from the economic abyss, that Greece is now experiencing..
Bottom line... Obama talks the talk... and Romney has walked the walk...

Here is what is coming through from the R.I.N.O.s who hate O'bama. I don't like Obumer, lie lie innuendo grumble grumble, he is a bad president, he needs to go. That has zero impact on independents some of whom are progressive Republicans and center left Republicans. Any Republican who supports what Lincoln stood for needs to support the DNC now. The Democrats of today embrace what Lincoln died for.
I consider myself an independent voter, but going back to the Reagan days and with the only exception having been Perot, I’ve always voted Republican. But 2-months ago, I wouldn't have even considered voting for Romney. But after the last two debates and especially after he finally talked about using tariffs to level the playing field and bring jobs back home, I'm considering him more seriously. It was good to see them both finally talk seriously about bringing manufacturing back home to the USA and about protecting American jobs.
Although, I didn't like the comment that we should automatically staple a green card to every foreigner’s new college diploma. That sounds too much like, "let's bring in cheaper educated foreigners to do take the place of higher paid US Citizens" (i.e.: the H1B immigrant issue)
President Obama did every well in this debate and appears to really care about doing right by America and our people. So, I'm still undecided.
If Both Parties don’t actually start doing something about the real problems in our country like “out-sourcing”, illegal immigration and the out of control costs of health care insurance, by the next election – American citizens may just have to run a nation-wide campaign to vote out every single incumbent elected official, so that maybe they’ll finally get the message.
Seems in previous elections that both parties were always able to distract and polarize voters with insignificant peripheral issues, which ended up getting most of the voters so caught up in the BS that they lost sight of the bigger picture.
Now that that abortion and gay marriage are not legitimate distractions, they're going with gas prices and Social Security.

I am an independent and I watched the debate hoping to get a better picture of what the candidate's stand for - and came away with nothing...I am not impressed with the rhetoric from either side but I do have to say that since Obama took office and based on what he promised to accomplish I have to say he has failed.
Now the talk is for another 4 years and I am afraid of the same result...I was skeptical in 2008 due to his lack of experience and conviction (voting "present"? Please - at least have the nerve to stand up for what you believe) but Sarah didn't give me much to go on either. The lack of a budget (how hard can that be?) also shows (to me) an unwillingness to get something done. I understand the bipartisan congress for two of those four years but what about the first two?
And if people think that there is not going to be a hard rain falling soon when the debt becomes unmanagable they are mistaken - this will be our generations WWII and there will have to be great sacrafices made - I will most likely vote for Romney as I just can't believe Obama will do anything about the spending and taxes as promised

I always get a chuckle every time the Rep's say Obama's economic policies are a failure. All of the Republican congressmen made a concerted effort to sabotage Obama's presidency and send our economy further into crapper than where they left it, just so they could get the office back. Absolutely contemptable! I guess the 1%ers weren't done with their cash grab. Not to worry. If Romney wins, the spigot will be opened up for them 1%ers again.
That is not the problem. The problem is that Mr Romney WILL keep his promise. He has promised to turn the economy around.
At this point, we have growing GDP, unemployment is going down, employment is going up, the market is going up, the profits of American companies are increasing. The deficit is going down.
We do not want this economy turned around. We want it to keep going in the direction it is going. That is why Mr Romney should not be President. When things are going in the right direction, you do not listen to the guy who says, "Let's go back!"
What is the big deal with Benghazi? Sure, Americans got killed (and that's ALWAYS terrible), but we've had attacks all around the world that have killed Americans in Marine Barracks, ships, restaurants, night-clubs, etc., etc.
First, we had the demonstrations in Cairo on 9/11/12, with demonstrators scaling the wall over a video, or whatever, it doesn't make much difference. With Americans, including diplomats over the world, thousands of miles away we're going to always blame the President when something bad happens? Americans are dead at the hands of others and it doesn't make a huge difference how, or why they died. We just all want to avoid it the best we can, based on a whole list of variables like how likely it's going to happen, the cost of protecting Americans, etc., etc.
As for the delay in admitting the reason for the deaths, again, does it really matter? The truth will come out in the end, the Administration has never said there wouldn't be attacks again, or, that we wouldn't find out about them. Most Americans are a thousand miles away from the issue, trying to work and raise families. I read through your post, and while I agree with several of your points I cannot see how you trust Mitt Romney to accomplish issues of importance which you and I share.
First, the last 7years have been rough for America. But instead of just saying that causation=correlation, lets look at the facts. In regards to the deficit, it has exploded as a result of 2 unpaid wars as well as the worst recessionary period since the Great Depression. Tax reform, historically the lowest federal income tax rates. Obama has laid a concrete tax policy in his budget, same tax rates for all brackets except for top 2 which will only be raised to pre-GWB levels, and to raise Long term Capital Gains 5% from 15% (money generated from the highest income earners generally). This plan is finite. I trust it as it is plain as day. Romney's plan says 20% reduction in taxes and will make it up with SOME kind of reduction of deductions. Nonpartisan tax professionals say this is IMPOSSIBLE to be balanced without increases net tax on middle income earners.
Your second point,
Food stamps. I completely agree that entitlements have grown out of control. Many of these people are out of work, uneducated, and have made poor financial decisions. Yet considering how hard our economy has fallen, it seems as though this result was inevitable. We need to phase out of benefits by creating policies that promotes job creation in new industries. Specifically energy (a point I agree with Romney on fossil fuels until new energy markets become more proven)

Seriously? I want to begin with saying that Romney is extremely intelligent. He created the industry know today as Private Equity (Leveraged Buyouts). It was a great business for a select few companies that could adhere to their guidance. The others were loaded with debt while all assets were taken by those who financed the takeover. Essentially raiding the company. I am not suprised you do not follow private equity, as most business professionals do not. And a successful Govenor? Ranked 47th for Job creation during his leadership, raising taxes and fees on middleclass and poor americans, low job approval from his constituents. For believing this I can make no excuses for you, this is pretty cut and dry, Massacuchets hates their former Govenor.

She DID point out that Romney was correct that it was two weeks before the Obama administration (as opposed to Obama himself) publicly concluded that the attack was an organized terrorist operation. Not everything Romney says is a lie. All liars have to base their lies in some facts that exist in the real world. Otherwise, nobody would know what they are babbling about.

as for obama he may well be a double-dipper. he will receive in excess of $190,000 per year beginning the day after he leaves office. he will also receive travel benefits, secret service benefits and other things just like all other past presidents.
bottom line right now is we will pay the millionaire obama with our tax money for the rest of his life. we will only do this for romney if he wins.
One of the most ridiculous things I've heard in the course of the whole Libya discussion is the notion that "this wasn't a demonstration, this wasn't a riot, this was a bunch of armed men...."
These three things, if not perfect synonyms, sure have a ton of overlap, and the best phrase to describe what actually happened is made even more difficult by what Hillary referred to the other day as "the fog of war."
Frankly, I think Romney's conclusion that this demonstrates that Obama's foreign policy is in disarray is a complete non sequitur. And his challenging Obama on the Rose Garden statement was a glaring unforced error on Romney's part.

He actually gave out some details if you paid attention. He said that each person will get a LIMITED "bucket" or amount that they could use for deductions. Just like an insurance policy if you use all your deductions up for the year you are screwed and will end up having to PAY MORE even though you qualify to take other deductions. YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO DEDUCT SO MUCH EVERY YEAR. It will be less then 47% of Americans get to deduct already. It has to or else he cannot cover the costs of the other things he want to do. Even then he is going to drive up our debt worse then Obama has. That is how Mitt will pay for his tax break for the rich. Get those lazy freeloading Americans that do not pay any income tax at all to finally pay something...
Why has Obama's policy of taxing the rich not been able to happen in 4 years? What effect would that have had on our debt if we had more revenue over these 4 years? Would our debt be as bad? No it would not. Therefore, not all of Obama's economic polices are even in place. You prevented him from implementing his policy of higher taxes on the rich and then try to say his polices fail...
A change in capital gains like others have said does chit for most middle class people. Only the rich use/benefit from capital gains. People like Mitt get 80% or more of their income from investments that only capital gains can tax. Capital gains needs to go up, not down. That is one of the biggest loopholes/deductions there is.

We know that within 24hours The State Department and the White House was given video of the attack along with a description of events KNOWN of which showed or said anything about a video. How did the administration go well over a week talking about a video and a protest that when neither was ever mentioned by anyone outside the administration? President of Libya said early on it was a terrorist attack but the administration continued the same line of a video and protest. I think it is a fair question to ask why they got it so wrong, for so long, and what information they were given and when? If we find out he knew the next day it was thought to be a terrorist attack yet went forward with that B.S. video and protest story then the only conclusion you can make is COVER UP!

Let's look at that, shall we?
Although six in 10 jobs lost during the Great Recession paid mid-level wages, the majority of new jobs created in the recovery -- positions such as store clerks, laborers and home healthcare aides -- pay much less, according to a new study.
Most of the jobs are minimum wage/low-no benefit sectors such as retail, food services, home health care and temporary services.
Lower-paying jobs, with median hourly wages from $7.69 to $13.83, accounted for just 21% of the job losses during the recession. But they've made up about 58% of the job growth from the end of the recession in late 2009 through early 2012.
In contrast, mid-wage occupations with median hourly wages from $13.84 to $21.13 -- jobs such as construction workers, real estate brokers, and data entry clerks -- have accounted for just 22% of the new jobs in the recovery after making up 60% of the job losses in the recession.
So, the pay scales being offered are in the lower class which will barely generate $25,000 a year of income.
Of course the centerpiece of Obama's economic policy is the $863 billion $timulu$. This means it's costing US TAXPAYERS over $270,000 per job.
Call me skeptical but I want my money back, this is NOT a very good return on investment no matter how you slice it. Of course this was borrowed money adding more to our crippling deficits and National Debt, increasing future interest costs for no return as these most jobs likely won't pay any Federal income taxes, AGAIN!

And nearly four years ago, at the height of the 2008 election season, Scripps Howard syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock wrote that female staffers in Obama’s U.S. Senate office, too, were shortchanged.
“Obama’s average male employee earned $54,397,” Murdock determined from online Senate salary records. But the future president’s “30 female employees earned $45,152, on average.”
Data from the Obama White House’s 2011 annual report show that female staffers there earn a median salary 18 percent lower than that of men.

The “Jobs Czar” for the Obama administration? Government records show at least 38 events since 2001 in which workers at GE plants in the U.S. were made eligible for trade adjustment assistance due to outsourcing or import competition. We don't have to settle for a slow recovery, I'll give you that. The problem is, nobody has proposed anything to get us out of this rut in a quick manner. Romney's tax cuts and deregulatory policies would easily throw us into another financial crisis (while also turning us into Greece); Obama is on the right track with his American Jobs Act, but it is nowhere near the amount needed to get us back to potential output in a timely fashion. Romney isn't committing to changing; he's merely vouching for the same supply-side policies that didn't work when Ronald Reagan tried them in the 1980 and surely won't work now.
Ambiguous, perhaps, yet "acts of terror" technically means "terrorist attack." Unless you failed English 101, "acts of terror" means "terrorist attack" in the most general sense. And by the way, attacking the moderator is a clear sign that that you lost; some of us lefties did it when Obama lost the debate in Denver, and now you righties are doing it now. My advice: lay off of Crowley; she posed a very credible question of how Romney is different than Bush when his entire economic plan is nearly identical to Bush's.

Well, neither of them is willing to dump the one-sided debacle that is free trade and play in the mud with our competitors, but both are pledging to be tough on China and other trade manipulators. Obama most likely will do it; Romney might, but the fact that he denounced said practice in his book No Apologies.
Well, Romney clearly has a plan for "tax reform," which is essentially another bull@!$%# attempt to redistribute wealth from bottom to the top by cutting tax rates for the wealthy, and if Romney is really devoted to deficit reduction, which his plans say otherwise, he'd have to raise taxes on middle class Americans and sell his tax plan as a tax cut for the rich and a tax hike for the poor.
Well, neither of them actually proposes real regulatory reform. In my mind, and in the minds of millions of Americans, regulatory reform means a prioritization of the regulatory framework, cutting regulations were they are not needed or insufficient and adding (yes, adding) regulations when needed, which is a radical movement from the past 40 years where "regulatory reform" has always meant deregulation. Romney would merely ax regulations like Dodd-Frank (which is needed) and environmental regulations that save lives, while Obama would add more regulations. While I do think that we need to go over our regulatory system, I do not think we should cut environmental regulations or Dodd-Frank; in the case of the latter, we ought to strengthen it to prevent another Depression.
If your talking about finishing off what's left of the union establishment in America and enacting or supporting a National Right-to-Work bill, then Romney's for it. If your talking about giving unions a small foothold in the fight for worker's rights, then Obama's for it. It depends what you mean by "union reform."
Obama (I hope) would still push for cap and trade, keep environmental regulations to lower greenhouse emissions, and lead the way for the transition from fossil fuels to green energy. Romney would cut environmental regulations and keep us on fossil fuels, leaving us behind as the rest of the world advances in green technology before New York City, Charleston, and San Francisco drown and the last real picture of the Statue of Liberty is underwater.
Neither Romney or Obama have actually put forward a plan to save Social Security, although Romney talks about raising the retirement age to 67 while Obama mentions (or mentioned) raising the taxable maximum to $250k or $500k.
Obama has saved Medicare for the medium-term, extending it's lifetime to 2024 from 2016 with the savings from Obamacare. Romney would actually make Medicare bankrupt in 2016 by removing the Medicare savings and reopening the donut hole for Medicare Part D, hurting seniors with higher drug prices and forcing massive cuts to benefits even before turning the system into a voucher.
Both are pretty much on the same page when it comes to charter schools and education reform, although Romney is more focused on school choice and maybe vouchers while Obama focuses on hiring more teachers and on the public system (including charter schools) as a whole. Obama also extended the lower interest rates for college Pell Grants and expanded them for more students, while Romney says he would do the same.

Crowley bailing out Obama on Libya was an egregious error, and one in which Obama was allowed to perpetuate a lie. Debates are suppose to be a level playing field, and in this case Romney was debating both Obama and Crowley.

Three debates so far and three debates where Romney/Paul have been debating not only the dems, but the moderator too! And three wins for Romney/Paul! It's hilarious how the left believes that all that insistence that it was the video can logically be translated to it was a premeditated act of terrorism. In fact, the Obama administration still hasn't told the truth to the families of the slain ambassador and the other 3 killed. Fortunately, the the vast majority of Americans can see through the lies. Obviously, Romney won on substance as well as style, just as he did in the first debate and Paul did in the VP debate.
As usual, libs don't look at the facts. Just look at the unemployment rate. Obama's people officially said that it went from 8.1% to 7.8% in September. Sounds good, huh? But, when you look at the actual figures you see that it's a total farce and the real figures tell a very gloomy tale. So, you've got a .3% drop in unemployment and that figure is based on 114,000 new jobs created, which is less than .1% of the 142 million jobs that there are. Add to that the fact that the number of full time employees decreased. Yup, things look just rosy!
Then, you add all his lies about reduction in taxes, you see how absurd it is. In truth, the middle class has seen quite a bit of tax increases under Obama. It's just not publicized by his PR machine. Just look at the taxes included in Obamacare. The solution that Obama has proposed is taxing the rich, ie: taxing the employers. Of course, we all know that by doing that employers are going to hire more people and pay them more wages because they have less money to do it with.

Nothing new here at all since the ideologues from both sides will insist their candidate won. As I have done before, I would throw out polls from FOX and NBC and the like and use what I characterize as something as close to a middle ground poll as possible which would be CNN that has concluded the debate to be essentially a tie.
I would consider this a major victory for Obama to be able to achieve a tie in a debate where he's handicapped by such a dismal record of failure. Once again, style appears to have prevailed over substance.
You probably trip over a lot of things with your limited capacity for thought. The government can not HIRE 12 million people which has been Obama's plan, expand government and hire people to run those new programs, pay for it by attacking and taxing private businesses. The government can put policies in place that help PRIVATE businesses expand, grow, and hire more employees which actually tends to work.

I know this because I actually did what he suggested, and looked at a transcript of the speech. He referred to "acts of terrorism" in a generic sense. Here is the ONLY reference he made to terrorism in the entire speech;
But never once did he refer to this inicedent as a terrorist attack.
In fact, the administration said it was a response to the recent release of an anti-islamic video; and, he made reference to that in the Rose Gardenspeech. Here is what he said; (this comes right from a transcript)
For two weeks, he and his people kept to that story. He even went to the General Assembly of The U.N. and gave a speech about freedom of expression in direct response to this incident!
So, for him to say, last night, that he called it an act of terrorism, is a LIE, and Candy Crowley actually helped him perpetrate that lie.
Additionally Crowley was the worst debate moderator of all time. She gave Obama almost 4 minutes more "talk time", and allowed him to cut Gov. Romney off several times.
By virtue of what I have posted above, Obama's own words from his Rose Garden speech after the Libya incident, and based upon his challenge to go look at the transcript, it should be evident to all that Romney won the denate.
Obama is a slick-talking LIAR, and we cannot afford 4 more years of his incompetence.
So, I apologize to all the Obama-Shama-Lama-Ding-Dongs who are chortling amd crowing today about what happened last night.

Heck, if they'd be half way honest and just used the same workforce figure as when Obama took office, the unemployment rate would be 11.6%. Well, it's official, the President won last night's debate hands down. How do I know?
Because I listened to Rush Limbaugh for about 12 minutes (it's all I could stand, but it was a personal best for me) on my way back from Tulsa this morning and he was all indignant about the debate, the moderator and the "fact" (his word) "Obama lied about Libya." He said that about 20 times in the twelve minutes I was able to stomach. His tone and his comments were disrespectful and dismissive and he was almost apologetic regarding Romney's performance. (I paraphrase) "What's Mitt supposed to do when Obama out-right LIES to the American people?"
It was pretty obvious Limbaugh thought Romney got his clock cleaned and he was doing everything he could to tear down the winner. wah-wah-wah.
And just for the record Limbaugh also said the Democrat party are all liars, all liberals are liars and that's the entire liberal agenda is to lie their way to power.
Man, that guy has got to go.

He actually gave out some details if you paid attention. He said that each person will get a LIMITED "bucket" or amount that they could use for deductions. Just like an insurance policy if you use all your deductions up for the year you are screwed and will end up having to PAY MORE even though you qualify to take other deductions. YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO DEDUCT SO MUCH EVERY YEAR. It will be less then 47% of Americans get to deduct already. It has to or else he cannot cover the costs of the other things he want to do. Even then he is going to drive up our debt worse then Obama has. That is how Mitt will pay for his tax break for the rich. Get those lazy freeloading Americans that do not pay any income tax at all to finally pay something...
Why has Obama's policy of taxing the rich not been able to happen in 4 years? What effect would that have had on our debt if we had more revenue over these 4 years? Would our debt be as bad? No it would not. Therefore, not all of Obama's economic polices are even in place. You prevented him from implementing his policy of higher taxes on the rich and then try to say his polices fail...
A change in capital gains like others have said does chit for most middle class people. Only the rich use/benefit from capital gains. People like Mitt get 80% or more of their income from investments that only capital gains can tax. Capital gains needs to go up, not down. That is one of the biggest loophole/deduction there is.

When words like we tried are what is coming out of Obama's mouth, it is pretty hard for people to see someone that can lead us out of this crisis. Nothing from Obama detailed a second term, just stay the course, which has been anemic by any account. Then the Fourth Estate did its job, and I thank Candy Crowley for that. By briefly and calmly stating the facts she demonstrated the leader of the GOP to be spectacularly wrong, and impotently angry.
How is Conservativeland reacting this morning? A quick check of "the Google" will demonstrate that overnight the Ministry of Propaganda hasn't slept. Instead they've doubled down on the lie, determined to flood the internet with insistence that Romney spoke the truth. It is the Big Lie demonstrated in real time.
The Right doesn't concede a single point, not even when they are obviously and spectacularly wrong. Instead they insist that up is down, day is night, wrong is right.

The only mention Obama made about terror attacks was at the end of the speech in summation after talking about 9/11/01, Iraq, Afghanistan. Obama went on the View and Letterman and never said this was a terror attack - Susan Rice went on talk shows talking about a youtube video - she never mentioned this as a terror attack. As late as Sept. 25, Obama at the UN 6 times referred to respect for all faiths and never stated this was a terror attack.

I'm going to watch the debate online tonight. I only heard about the last half hour on the radio driving home. I did hear the best part, though!

I believe Governor Romney is a good man. Loves his family, cares about his faith. But I also believe that when he said behind closed doors that 47 percent of the country considered themselves victims who refuse personal responsibility, think about who he was talking about.

Students who are out there trying to hopefully advance their own dreams, but also this country's dreams. Soldiers who are overseas fighting for us right now. My tax reform plan to lower rates for the middle class and for small business creates 7 million more. And expanding trade, cracking down on China and improving job training takes us to over 12 million new jobs."

As we have noted before, the 12 million figure is not a bad bet by Romney. Moody's Analytics, in an August forecast, predicts 12 million jobs will be created by 2016, no matter who is president. And Macroeconomic Advisors in April also predicted a gain of 12.3 million jobs
In any case, four of Romney's top economic advisers — R. Glenn Hubbard (Dean of Columbia Business School), N. Gregory Mankiw (Harvard professor), John B. Taylor (Stanford professor) and Kevin A. Hassett (American Enterprise Institute scholar) — co-wrote a white paper that lays out the case that Romney's spending, tax and regulatory policies would yield a more robust recovery — adding 250,000 jobs a month — that would result in 12 million jobs over four years.
But the specifics — 7 million plus 3 million plus 2 million — mentioned by Romney in the ad are not in the white paper. So where did that come from?
We asked the Romney campaign, and the answer turns out to be: totally different studies … with completely different timelines.
For instance, the claim that 7 million jobs would be created from Romney's tax plan is a 10-year number, derived from a study written by John W. Diamond, a professor at Rice University.
For instance, the 3-million-jobs claim for Romney's energy policies appears largely based on a Citigroup Global Markets study that did not even evaluate Romney's policies. Instead, the report predicted 2.7 million to 3.6 million jobs would be created over the next eight years, largely because of trends and policies already adopted — including tougher fuel efficiency standards that Romney has criticized and suggested he would reverse.
The 2-million-jobs claim from cracking down on China is also very suspicious.
This figure comes from a 2011 International Trade Commission report, which estimated that there could be a gain of 2.1 million jobs if China stopped infringing on U.S. intellectual property rights. The estimate is highly conditional and pegged to the job market in 2011, when there was high unemployment. "It is unclear when China might implement the improvement in IPR protection envisioned in the analysis, and equally unclear whether the United States will face as much excess labor supply then as it does today," the report says.
The Romney campaign has already used this study, in a misleading way, to claim that Obama's China "policies cost us 2 million jobs." Now the campaign has just taken the same figure and credited the claimed job gain to itself, even though the report does not examine any of Romney's proposed policies

Damnation but Ol' Willard and Lil' Paulie keep tripping over these Numbers Problems. I thought that you'll Yahoo's told me these Guys were "Numbers Gurus". Absolutely the Best and Brightest at crunching numbers and crafting policy to come out just the way you'll say is the only way things can work out.
First these Two Amigos can't get a Debt/Deficit number to come out. It always adds to it rather than paying it down.
Then you'lls Little Buddies can't come up with a Tax Plan that doesn't raise mine and about 90% of Americans Taxes. Your Little Buddies might be going down but as sure as Little Green Apples mine is going up.
Then the Gruesome Twosome comes up with a Medicare Voucher System that is going to increase the cost to Seniors instead of decreasing it. Kinda defeats the purpose of trying to reform the system don't it?
Now these Yahoo's can't even get some Jobs Numbers to come out even though everybody agrees that they are going to improve no matter who is President. Heck even a fifth-grader ought to be able to make that one come out.
Sounds like to me you'll need to send the Hardy Boys back to School. H@ll even Jethro Bodine knew that naught from naught was naught.

IR--thanks for sharing this. I'm afraid that the debunking of Mitt's 12 million jobs lie will be lost in the post-debate coverage (since there are newer lies to debunk) but it is telling since it is his alleged reason to vote for him---he'll create jobs--and now we see he won't.

This is SPOT on! Personally, anytime either one of the R$mney/Ryan crew starts talking about numbers, I give in to the impulse to cover my purse. They only know how to concentrate wealth to the few, the proud, the entitled. They have NO CLUE as to how to help the Middle Class or the struggling class.
Finally President Obama hit him with the 47% and it landed. Hard. No wonder R$mney hopped on his jet and high tailed it out of town. He no doubt had to wash the 'stench' of real hard workers from his lying eyes.

The Romney "Jobs" math is eerily similar to his "47%" math that took three entirely different "subsets" of people - Obama supporters, those who pay no federal income tax, and those on government assistance - and lumped them together into one homogeneous group.
If Reagan's trickle-down theory was "voodoo economics", I would call the Romney/Ryan approach "fantasy mathematics".

Backhouse forgets that the devastating policies put in play by Clinton came to fruition during the Bush administration. Demanding and REQUIRING that banks make loans to people that were previously unqualified. The Y2K build-up helped boost the economy during Clintons administration, but the collapse occurred during Bushes time. You say Romney lies but you very conveniently omit lies by Obama about cutting the deficit in half, the Lybia debacle and the list goes on. If you want economic collapse, vote Obama. Doing the same thing for four more years is insane. I see people every day in my business who have no money or hope.

I have no respect for either party, haven't for decades. I voted for Kennedy simple because I thought he was the lesser of two evils. And my opinion hasn't changed. Nixon, while he was no worse than any politician of the time, his only mistake was getting caught doing what they all do, was a decent President. Clinton on the other hand, was the champion of accounting tricks and everyone thinks him a saint. The fact is, if he had done his job and taken out Bin Laden on the 6 occasions he appeared in the sights of a predator drone, the world trade center and all those lives would not have been lost.
ALL politicians are the same, If they're mouth is moving, they are lying to you. They are ALL liars, thieves, extortionists and con men, even the ones in skirts. Last night at the second debate, the nation saw a former governor and a venture capitalist try to answer a very legitimate question about immigration from a voter.
Romney got out his talking points and in mid stream, he pivoted and starting talking about the Chinese and mutual funds and the President ‘s pensions.
How bizarre!
When the President tried to respond Mr. Romney told him to “wait I am not finished and don’t interrupt”
Now Romney was both off base and off topic . It was like something in his brain brought up the flash card: Chinese companies and investments in mutual funds.
Was he just nervous or trying to get off the topic of immigration?
Or is Romney not all there?
This guy wants to be president.

It is instructive to observe the reversal of rhetoric, and then read the "marching orders" from the respective team's personalized media, and note how closely they align...
Debate was probably worth around one point in the national polls for the incumbent, but more (and more important) with the constituencies that were obviously being targeted; Women, Latinos, and the young...
I'll take that 1 point for the Pres. nationally and hope for a 2 point gain in the Swing State - Allowing him to win five of them by single digits. The President helped in the constituencies he needed.
Interesting to note, Obama wins the election if he wins any 5 of the 9 swing states. Romney still has a tough route.
I think Obama wins 6 - New Hampshire, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nevada. (290) Even if he loses Ohio he would win with 272. My prediction throughout the summer has been Obama winning by 277 - 285, to make that true switch out Virginia for Obama, Ohio for Romney to get to 285.
I loved it when obama claimed to be jesus last night when he said he visited that guy in the hospital who had been shot in the head and he said a prayer and 2 weeks later obama saw the guy and he was fine ,healed walking around like nothing happened.Must have been a prayer from obama's koran.

Mitt Romney, the Snake Oil Salesman with the Cheshire Cat Smile. Last night, the flash and pomp of Mitt Romney was revealed to be just that--all flash and pomp but little else. Time after time, Romney's plans and previous statements plus his multiple reversals were revealed by President Obama as nothing more than a lot of talk and no substance. Romney came across as arrogant, petulant, disrespectful, spoiled and once again showed viewers what a whiner Romney is when he does not get his way. At one point his demand to get the last word was nothing short of a 5-year old stamping his foot.
President Obama took the robotic, pre-programmed Mitt Romney apart piece by piece. He commanded the room, he did not allow Romney to bully the room, he gave Romney a taste of his own lies as Obama hurled them back at Romney to defend.
Romney's behavior in this debate was no different than it was during the first debate. The difference was that President Obama did not allow the repeated lies, the multiple choice positions, the flip flops of Mitt to go unmentioned or unchallenged. This viewer lost track of the number of times President Obama said "not true" and proceeded to explain why it was "not true".
Romney lied in the second debate as much as the first. One lie was his claim that he did not say the Arizona "papers please" law should be the model for the country--it's on tape, and there's no mention of "E-Verify" when he said it. President Obama tangled Mitt Romney in Mitt's own web of words.
Romney answered the question directed to him about his immigration reform plans with accusations that President Obama has not done immigration reform but Mitt failed to actually present his own then tried to provide a plan in his rebuttal to President Obama. This is what happens to a presidential candidate who campaigns strictly against the policies of an incumbent president without ever providing voters with a plan of his own--Romney was reduced to a series of his own talking points and flip flops.
Romney spouted his memorized answers, some from his stump speech but he did not answer what deductions he would eliminate, he did not answer any questions with specifics or details. Romney's 5-point Plan is the exact same George W. Bush 5-point plan in a different order. Romney's promise that he won't cut taxes on the wealthy was the same promise George W. Bush made; apparently Mitt & George are two peas in a pod. President Obama reduced Romney's 5-point plan to a 1-point plan and tied Bush 43 around Romney's neck in the process.
Romney answered the "fair pay" question with a word salad that gave us "binders full of women" and once he creates all those millions of jobs, employers will have to hire women. Have to hire women?
Many times viewers watched Mitt Romney respond to a question then get lost in his own weeds and veer off into something totally irrelevant to the question.
Romney accused President Obama of being on fund raisers after the Benghazi attack when, in fact, President Obama spoke from the Rose Garden that day. Romney had egg on his face when he repeated the right-wing lie that President Obama did not acknowledge it was a terrorist attack for 14 days, when the video clips from the Rose Garden address counter that false accusation (cheers to Candy Crowley for confirming it). For the conservatively impaired, these were the words spoken by President Obama: "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four ore Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done...."
There were too many great moments for President Obama for me to choose a favorite. One was when President Obama took full responsibility for the Benghazi attack; he did not allow Hillary Clinton or Susan Rice to be blamed; he defended both and praised both. That is what a President does. President Obama's response to Romney and the GOP's politicizing of the four deaths in Libya was masterful, powerful. A steel-eyed Obama looked directly into Romney's eyes and responded: "The suggestion that anybody in my team, whether the Secretary of State, our UN Ambassador, anybody on my team would play politics or mislead when we have lost four of our own, governor, is offensive. That's not what we do, that's not what I do as president, that's not what I do as commander-in-chief." Powerful that tragic September day and powerful last night.
President Obama had the last word; his response to the question was presidential, honest, heartfelt and left Mitt Romney wondering what day it was because Mitt's own 100% reversal was thrown back in his face with President Obama's reminder of Romney's real views of 47% of Americans.
Never underestimate Barack Obama.
