In Iowa, GOP outpacing Democrats in absentee requests over last 10 days

Citing state records, the Des Moines Register reports today that Republican voters in Iowa have requested more absentee ballots than Democrats for 10 days running.

This is noteworthy because Democrats in Iowa have been touting their early vote effort, telling reporters that it demonstrates the strength of the party's organization and its commitment to the president's re-election. The first debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney was 13 days ago.

The Democratic effort in Iowa has included a sweeping campaign to bring supporters to the polls on the first day of early voting last month, and a "gotta vote" bus tour that brought national surrogates through key Iowa counties.

Despite the lead the last 10 days for the GOP, Iowa Democrats remain ahead in total absentee ballots requested and returned to date.

The Iowa Secretary of State's website includes current absentee request-and-return totals. Absentee balloting is one of several ways to vote early in Iowa. The Register's reporting does not take into account, for example, in-person voting, which is not similarly tracked.

Most Iowa counties sent out absentee ballots on Thursday, Sept. 27th, which was also the first day of early voting in the state. Absentee ballots are due back to county election offices by Nov. 5th.

Iowa Secretary of State Absentee Ballot Statistics:

Data current as of Oct. 15th 2012:

Democratic - 200,472 Ballots Requested
Democratic - 123,993 Ballots Received

Republican - 130,936 Ballots Requested
Republican - 70,145 Ballots Received

No Party - 97,802 Ballots Requested
No Party - 46,842 Ballots Received

Other - 409 Ballots Requested
Other - 198 Ballots Received

Note: "No party" is Iowa's designation for voters who choose to be independent of Democrats and Republicans. "Other" is the designation for the libertarian and green parties.

Here's more important news. Romney's advisor is saying we DO NOT NEED to break up the TOO BIG TO FAILS. These guys are real idiots. As if the market forces worked previously. Do these guys live in a cave??? What a joke. Just another reason NOT to vote for Romney. Hope the President brings up this issue tonight.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A top adviser to presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday dismissed an idea to cap the size of big banks floated last week by a senior U.S. Federal Reserve official.

Glenn Hubbard, an economic advisor in the Republican camp, said market forces would keep the size of financial institutions in check better than difficult and arbitrary government limits on banks judged too-big-to-fail.

The GOP may have outpaced democrats the last ten days but they can't make up for the outpacing done by OFA democrats prior to the first day of early voting. The local auditor had so many VBM requests, they starting mailing ballots out a week earlier than planned--thanks to the efforts of democrats. Not to mention the early voting efforts which have exceeded the GOP efforts.

After receiving at least two GOP robo-calls per day for the last month, I finally had the pleasure of speaking to a live GOPer yesterday. She got an "Iowa nice" earful about the calls from Crossroads GPS, the RNC, the Lieutenant Governor, Romney plus a plethera of anti-Supreme Court justice ones. Guess Little Man Caesar supports Todd Akin and Paul Ryan's notion of "legitimate rape" or "forcible rape" as they labeled it in their legislation which would restrict women's rights to abortion in the case of rape and requires a woman to have proof of force. Why do liberals think there is a War on Women--the GOP House passed 38 pieces of anti-women's health choice rights legislation. Nearly every one was co-sponsored by none other than little lyin' Paul Ryan--requirements for mandatory vaginal probes, bans on contraception, bans on invitro-fertilization, bans on all abortion--no exceptions even for rape, incest or the life of the mother. So much for that "pro-life" talking point, the GOP only cares about the life of the baby, the mother is collateral damage. The GOP states passed hundreds of laws restricting women's health care rights, mandatory problems, restrictions on women's clinics that no other medical providers had to meet, etc.

Do you know what I find strange? The last Savior of the Republican party the Great George W Bush has not been seen or heard from. I wonder Why? Are they afraid that showing Georges face will cost them the election? I think so. Do the Republican Party thinks that the public is so stupid that we will forget what they did last time? Why would we vote in a guy with some of the same policies that got us into this mess, and also has some that will kill American jobs?

Don't beiveve me.

Go to Mitts Web site and take a look at his polices ( there are no details) and google some of the things he wants to do. For examlpe the economic zone or why he wants to attract the best workers from all over the world? Not American workers but the world. What would happen if we remove the EPA.

I would also fact check everything both campaigns have said to see if they are true. I came to the realisation that Mitt and Ryan are serial liars.

Im sure you think John Edwards and Anthony Weiner and Bill Clinton are great champions on womens behalf. i think the fed gov needs to stay out of women's business in general and that includes funding for abortions (save rape or life of the woman). this way the feds cant pick sides and neither D or R can politicize it.

Jody, I think you got most of that right. No wait..NOT!

Shouldn't those being served actually be doing the dishes? On another board, I did see a youtube video showing President Obama actually serving at a soup kitchen with his family. How patronizing does a party have to be to get you to see what republicans really think of women? And shame on you for not advocating for women THE SAME RIGHTS TO DETERMINE THEIR HEALTHCARE that men have, including what policies they want. How dare you try to limit the choices of women. Why should women not have FULL reproductive healthcare rights? I don't want to pay for Viagra, but that is not my business. We aren't 'victims', but women WILL be victorious. You most definitely don't speak for me, and I hope that women are the reason Obama wins. We can do it without misogyny, from men AND women.

You do know that the Republicans have been demanding we arm the Syrian rebels for months now, right. You seem to want it both ways. If we don't,you say Obama doesn't care.If we do you say Obama supports Al Qaeda.

As for your talking about Libya:

What on earth are you talking about? The tragic Benghazi attack is about different intelligence coming in at different times and being reported as it comes out. If I can fault the government,it would be that instead of waiting for a full investigation before commenting. They quickly put out unclear intelligence. But had they waited, the Republicans would be accusing them of hiding information from the public.

This explains the information better than I can:

        Clearing the Record About Benghazi

When did Mr. Obama first talk about the attack on Sept. 11 in Benghazi, which killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, as terrorism?

Mr. Obama applied the “terror” label to the attack in his first public statement on the events in Benghazi, delivered in the Rose Garden at the White House at 10:43 a.m. on Sept. 12, though the reference was indirect. “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for,” he said. “Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.”

Was that the only time Mr. Obama used the “terror” label?

No. The next day, Sept. 13, in a campaign appearance in Las Vegas, he used similar language. “And we want to send a message all around the world — anybody who would do us harm: No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America,” he said.

If the president referred to the attack as an “act of terror” twice in those two days, why has there been such a controversy over what Republicans call the administration’s deep reluctance to label the attack terrorism?

The “act of terror” references attracted relatively little notice at the time, and later they appeared to have been forgotten even by some administration officials. In the vice-presidential debate, for instance, Representative Paul D. Ryan declared, “It took the president two weeks to acknowledge that this was a terrorist attack.” Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. did not directly contradict the charge. What attracted more attention was a series of statements by administration officials, notably Susan E. Rice, the ambassador to the United Nations, that appeared to link the Benghazi attack to a protest against a crude anti-Islam video made in the United States that was circulating on the Web.

What exactly did the administration officials say that prompted the Republican response?

Several officials emphasized that the attack appeared to be spontaneous, not planned, and linked it to the protests over the video that had taken place in Cairo and other cities. Jay Carney, the White House spokesman, said on Sept. 14 about the Benghazi attack, “We have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack.” On Sept. 16, Ms. Rice said, “What this began as was a spontaneous, not a premeditated, response to what happened, transpired in Cairo,” where protesters angered by the video stormed the grounds of the American Embassy. Hedging her remarks by saying that her information was preliminary, Ms. Rice also said, “We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people, came to the embassy to — or to the consulate, rather — to replicate the sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo.” That initial protest, she said, “seems to have been hijacked” by “extremists who came with heavier weapons.”

When did administration officials begin consistently to use the “terrorism” label?

On Sept. 19, Matthew G. Olsen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, said about the killings in Benghazi during a Senate hearing, “Yes, they were killed in the course of a terrorist attack on our embassy.” The next day, asked about Mr. Olsen’s testimony, Mr. Carney declared, “It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack.”

What were American intelligence agencies saying about the attack?

Administration officials later explained their statements by saying they had repeated preliminary information they had learned from intelligence briefings. The director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper Jr., lent some support to the administration’s claims by approving the release of an unusual public statement on Sept. 28 about the evolving conclusions of the intelligence agencies. His spokesman, Shawn Turner, said intelligence analysts who at first believed that the attacks were part of a spontaneous protest revised their initial assessments “to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists.”

What do eyewitnesses say about the events in Benghazi? Were they related to the insulting video, or is that a red herring? And was the assault planned for the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, or was it spontaneous?

According to reporting by David D. Kirkpatrick and Suliman Ali Zway of The New York Times, eyewitnesses have said there was no peaceful demonstration against the video outside the compound before the attack, though a crowd of Benghazi residents soon gathered, and some later looted the compound. But the attackers, recognized as members of a local militant group called Ansar al-Shariah, did tell bystanders that they were attacking the compound because they were angry about the video. They did not mention the Sept. 11 anniversary. Intelligence officials believe that planning for the attack probably began only a few hours before it took place.

Is it fair to link the Benghazi attack to Al Qaeda?

Only very indirectly. Ayman al-Zawahri, the leader of Al Qaeda, had called on Libyans to avenge the killing of a Libyan-born Qaeda leader, and American intelligence officials have said they intercepted boastful phone calls after the assault from the attackers to members of the Qaeda affiliate in North Africa, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Why has this event become such a flash point in the presidential campaign?

As the centerpiece of his national security record, Mr. Obama has highlighted his administration’s aggressive efforts against militants in Pakistan and Yemen, as well as thesuccessful raid to kill Osama bin Laden. Some of his top aides have suggested that Al Qaeda has been decimated by the American strikes. Republicans have seized on the Benghazi attack — which resulted in the first killing of an American ambassador in decades — to counter this Democratic line, suggesting that the administration has exaggerated its success against Al Qaeda and has pursued policies that have left the Middle East in chaos.

JoAnne, it's so typical--the political headline doesn't match the rest of the article.

Today has been a day, shoot it's been 3 weeks, of debate spin from the media. Good grief, to hear these pundits with all their "conventional wisdom" speak the sun may not rise tomorrow. To listen to them one would assume President Obama is a horrible speaker, Mitt Romney is a gifted one, Obama will stumble, Mitt will be nimble and the world might end tomorrow. Here's a thought to sum up the media debate feeding frenzy: "The conventional view serves to protect us from the painful job of thinking." John Kenneth Galbraith. How about we all watch the debate and engage in the "painful job of thing" for ourselves!!!

Jody, the headline here doesn't even come close to the one in the Register article that's the basis for the story, which is "GOP Chips At Early Voting Deficit". Back in the dark ages when I first learned about journalism in English class, we were taught that using words like "chips at" vs. "outpacing" was subjective and editorializing, not objective reporting. Of course, that was also back when there were actual journalists instead of the talking heads, blow-dries, and snarky pundits we're stuck with today.

I spent some time away from it all this morning at a funeral mass for the brother of my boss for over 30 years. I'm not a religious person, but I have to say, sitting in a beautiful, quiet place and having time to reflect on life and then giving perfect strangers (Republicans? Democrats? No one asked) the "Sign of Peace" and catching up a bit with my boss's family was a much nicer way to spend time than hanging out here at the "feeding frenzy" all day.

Galbraith was right, thinking is a painful job. Guess that's why so many people in politics avoid it so strenuously.

Hey Iowa! Read about what Bain Capital is doing in Freeport Illinois. The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" will make an easy $8 Million, and he never had to earn it! Hey Iowa! The GOP?RNC "Alien and Chief" is leading from behind with Bain Capital, and he will never give up full control of Bain. So he wants to be secretive about continuing to 'harvest' corporations. He wants to be President too! Really? This sounds like a 'conflict of interest' to Progressive Power.

          @Progressive,

          here is the article

          “FREEPORT, Ill -- Monday
in Freeport, Illinois, three protesters were arrested after they tried to
block a truck from leaving the Sensata plant. What's brought attention to this
protest is that Sensata plans to shut down operations and outsource to China, and is owned by Bain Capital.
‘A man, a woman and the 16-year-old daughter of the Sensata employee were
arrested after they refused to get out of the way of a truck leaving the plant
          with equipment for China.

‘"Not all of us, but some of us are willing to be arrested
to stop that truck," said Debi Kempel, one of the three arrested today.
‘Protesters have been camping out across the street from the Sensata plant
since early September. The plant is slated for closing next month.”

Sensata workers have set up a camp they call
"Bainport" and workers and supporters are trying to block the Bain
trucks that are moving equipment out to ship to China right now. In breaking
news there were arrests made today."

"The Sensata workers camping at Bainport are asking Mitt
Romney to come help them keep their jobs. Romney insists that he has nothing to do with Bain Capital anymore (his tax returns showed that he gets more than $400,000 a week from Bain investments).

'Helping the Sensata workers would show that he means it
when he says he has nothing to do with the things Bain does now, and that he will do something about the jobs being sent to China. What better opportunity to
prove both than to show up and confront Bain for sending these jobs to China!"

Romney does not care, and is probably too heavily invested in
Bain to challenge it. He certainly cannot stand up to China! Given a choice
between money and the middle class, the choice for Romney is clear. Money
          trumps all.

The fairgrounds across the road from the plant is where the have made an
emcampment. They call it Bainport (instead of Freeport, Illinois). Someone is
always there. Many sleep overnight. They have meals together and they are
trying to bring attention to their cause. Sensata had its most profitable year
last year. The move to China has nothing to do
with the plant not being profitable. It is about making even more money for its
share holders by paying Chinese workers 24 cents per hour.

The workers have already trained the supervisors from China for their jobs who
traveled to Freeport, Illinois as if loosing
their jobs wasn't enough. Mitt Romney said on the debate stage he would be
tough on China. Well, it seems
he is going to be tough on the Chinese (by supporting inhumane working
conditions), as well as be tough on American workers by supporting closing
their plant. Workers were promised 56 weeks of severance pay. Well, that
apparently is too much for Bain, they have reduced it to 26 weeks.

'The Sensata workers called on Mitt
          Romney
          — an investor in Sensata through his Bain holdings — to
intervene. A group went to Iowa during the
primaries to ask him to come to Freeport; they met with no
success. Another group went to the Republican convention to ask him to come to Freeport; they had no
          success, either.
So, with the open support of Freeport’s mayor and City
Council, the workers set up a “Bainport” encampment in the Stephenson County
Fairgrounds right across the street from the plant.

“Welcome to Bainport, a taste of the Romney economy,” reads one
sign. “Romney does have a jobs plan; too bad it’s for China,” reads another.
And Mrs. Turner and others began to make their voices heard.

'“We are suffering from the Bain model of capitalism,” Mrs.
Turner said. “This is the way Bain works. They take over good companies, and
then ship their jobs to China to make even more
          money."

Why does this not surprise me that Romney's Bain Capital, where he has many investments in has decided to outsource its jobs to China and close the plant in Freeport Illinois. Yes he really cares about the people of this country. He blames Obama for not getting people jobs and then he turns around and sends jobs overseas. Gee, that makes for a great president doesn't it. Like I said before, Romney can't be trusted to care about the working people of this country. All the republicans can say is Obama supporters are living on welfare and foodstamps, when Romney and his supporters are responsible for putting those same people in that predicament.

Jersy Girl, great and thank you, but please consider consumers are the real job creators. You couldn't have "done your part" without consumers. What you did was to supply merchandise or a service your consumers wanted. It takes both sides. By outsourcing jobs, you are not doing anyone a favor. I am not saying YOU outsourced jobs, but you can see my point.

I don't believe in polls since there are so many ways they could be mistaken, depending on who they poll. It is not a sure way to predict anything. I do know that more women are probably voting for the Obama/Biden ticket since they care more about women issues and are more trustworthy. Example: today I saw an article about Paul Ryan going to a food pantry and getting in without permission just so he could get a photo shoot showing him washing dishes. The person in charge said that what Ryan did could hurt his future receipt of food donations because the shelter is not showing favoritism to any particular candidate. All he proved by doing that was how little respect he really has for people and their needs. Grow up Ryan, I have no respect for you or Romney. For the record I am a female 59 years old.

Why would you think that Obama and Biden are 'for' women? The Obama White House is considered an hostile work environment for women and female staffers earn about 75% of what their male counterparts earn. Add to that Obama's willingness to throw Hillary under the bus when he is actually responsible for the decisions coming out of his administration.

When is Obama going to put his big boy pants on and stop hiding behind women's skirts?

Democrats are losing white voters faster than they're adding to the national debt, like I said.

It's that constant anti-white, fake racism stuff 24/7 that liberal scum are always pushing.

Expect to be in trouble in all the formerly blue mostly-white states in the Northern Midwest from now on because of this. It's a big reason why out of nowhere, the Dems lost both attempts to beat Scott Walker in blue Wisconsin (83% white). You can expect the same in Minnesota (83% white) in the coming years as well.

But Iowa...you're finished there as a party, whether you barely survive in that state this election or not.

The constant hatred of white people that the Democratic Party pushes has made your performance amongst whites so bad that actuallyl you lost them 55-43% even in 2008, a big year for Democrats. In 2010, last time around, you lost whites 60-40%, according to ABC.

Since the Republicans think that Iowa has it in the bag for you please help me out with something. The Republicans state that President Obama should run on his record so I have two questions?? And please talk about Romney and not the President. For people trying to still make a choice it matters that these questions about Romney get answered.

              1) When Romney was Governor of MA--his record for job creation was 47th in the nation? With that kind of record what makes you think that he will create jobs for the entire US? I don't doubt that he can create jobs in China, but what about here??

              2) He says that while Governor he worked with 87% Democrats but his record showed that he vetoed over 800 bills which is more than double what his predecessor did. With that kind of record what makes you think he can work across party lines?

These are the reasons why majority of MA is voting for the President. They have already dealt with Romney and decided that they don't want anything to do with him.

His campaign manager for when he he was running for Governor said it best: "Romney will say anything to get elected even if it contradicts what he said the week before."

BTW: Love the New Ad on choice. Regardless if it's celebrities or not--what they are saying is true. Over the course of the last month Romney has said that he is taking away funds for Planned Parenthood and he wants to overturn Roe v Wade. Which basically means that women will not control our own decisions regarding our reproductive health.

Romney makes it seem like Planned Parenthood is just about abortion which it is not. They provide healthcare (yearly exams, mammograms, contraception) and health counseling for women that are low income or that have no health insurance regardless of income. Republicans complain about women sitting around and getting pregnant, having babies they can't afford and then having to go on welfare.

Well get a clue. Romney is trying to go back to the dark ages and take away your personal right to make your own health decisions including obtaining health counseling and contraception. You can't have it both ways!!!
