Ryan did wash dirty dishes during soup kitchen visit

LYNCHBURG, VA -- Amid questions and criticisms related to Paul Ryan’s visit this weekend to an Ohio soup kitchen, the charity’s president said the Republican vice presidential candidate did, in fact, scrub dirty dishes though his visit wasn’t officially sanctioned.

The question of whether the Wisconsin congressman cleaned dishes that were actually dirty – as opposed to re-washing already clean dishes so as to get a good photo opportunity -- Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society President Brian Antal clarified that Ryan did clean soiled dishes. This differs from what Antal had told The Washington Post Monday.

Speaking Tuesday morning with NBC News, Antal said he was not on-site when Ryan was at the soup kitchen and attributes his earlier comments that the dishes were clean when Ryan washed them to hearing the details second-hand from a volunteer.

Following a town hall meeting in Youngstown, OH on Saturday, Ryan -- joined by his wife and three kids -- made a quick stop at the St. Vincent De Paul Society shortly after the homeless people had breakfast. There were only volunteers left inside the building by the time Ryan arrived, as his public event ran longer than expected.

After arriving at the soup kitchen -- where Secret Service agents and staff had gathered before the motorcade arrived -- the Ryan family put on white aprons and proceeded to wash dishes for several minutes as cameras and still photographers snapped photos nearby.

In response to questions about Antal’s comments to the Washington Post that Ryan “did nothing” while at the soup kitchen, Antal said his words were mischaracterized. He told NBC News in that Ryan did very little work only compared to the larger context of Saturday morning, when the kitchen fed 180 homeless people breakfast. Antal conceded that Ryan did wash several dirty dishes.

The head of the charity said a campaign aide who had sought permission for the visit prior to Ryan's visit was granted access by a volunteer, rather than any person of authority at the soup kitchen. The volunteer, Antal said, had no authority to allow or deny the Republican vice presidential candidate's stop.

Ryan has made several quick stops that are unannounced to the general public in the past while campaigning across the country. In response to questions about the stop in the battleground state of Ohio that has raised questions in the media, campaign spokesman Michael Steel said: “It was a great opportunity to highlight the importance of volunteerism and local charities.”

Antal says he is speaking to the media because the organization is non-political and is concerned that being connected to the campaign could negatively impact their support.

The confusion, though, hasn't stopped Democrats from trying to turn Ryan's stop into a political issue.

The Washington Post posted an updated article online Tuesday morning noting: “The head of an Ohio charity who criticized Mitt Romney’s campaign for staging a 'photo-op' at one of the group’s soup kitchens has consistently voted in Democratic primaries.”

I'm just delighted this is still in the new cycle! Bet they'll think twice before using any footage in a campaign ad (if that was the original intent). Because clearly they weren't seeking votes from these 47-percenters!

Dalai Lama urges compassion in Boston speech

Boston.com

Ethics should be part of every person’s education and the role of teaching virtues shouldn’t be limited to religion, the Dalai Lama told a crowd in Boston on Sunday.

‘‘Any movement starts with the individual, not from government or an organization,’’ the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said. ‘‘We are now in the 21st century, so we need education in human compassion. Not talking about heaven or hell, but how to build a happier community and a happier world.’’

‘‘Religion, if not properly practiced, can give us hypocrisy,’’ he said. ‘‘A lot of people claim to be religious, but in reality they do not care, they have no conviction to these values.’’

_______________

There is zero compassion in today's Republican Party. And Paul Ryan? One of the least compassionate of them all. Only Romney leads him in that department.

All you have to do is revisit the 47% video of Romney and exactly what he said.

We're all victims.

That's right Romney. Of your rich quick schemes you played on all of us.

It's not the issue of washing dirty dishes in a soup kitchen, but how many people that needed it, did he help? WCA: same goes for you - I have been in soup kitchens, fished people out of jails and mental institutions, and put them back in. In my life I have come to find a better character in those who have helped others in need. Can I count you in that group, or are you just a bunch of hot air?

I was on the fence until I heard the Republican message that they want less government control of us the people (great I thought!) but then Republicans have publicly stated they want to put into law (ie government control) mandates to ban a woman's right to chose, constitutional changes to ban marriage equality, ban gay men and woman from serving their country in the military.

The hypocrisy here is breath taking! Lets not even go into the voter ID laws they are pushing.

This changed me form a fence sitter to a Democrat voter. You should not reduce the rights of Americans, reducing rights and changing the Constitution to do so, is un-American.

I know most of the right sees this as a non-issue. However, I find it very telling as an excuse to look human but he really did not help out. I too have worked in soup kitchens - they are in desperate need for people in food prep, serving and cleaning up.

But he only had a few minutes to spare to look good. Pathetic.

Good grief - so Antel's soup kitchen gets national headlines and all he can do is whine that a volunteer gave permission to the VP candidate and his family to actually come in and help out. And now the Democrats are crying foul on Ryan for simply doing a good deed. This is ridiculous, and that Antel would even comment on what Ryan and his family did or didn't do when Antel himself wasn't even there is incredulous. As if anyone would stop giving their time or donations to a soup kitchen because of who may have stopped by.

More failed attempts to distract from the real issues (Libya, failure to re-energize the economy, abyssmal debate performance, pitiful record...the list goes on and on). Terrorist attacks in Libya *Big Bird!* - Pathetic showing in the debate *uninvited and cleaning clean dishes* Not to mention making poor Hillary the fallguy (girl) on the Libya. The Democrats must really think the American public is ignorant.

November 6 will set the record straight.

Once again the thread has gone off topic... you have allowed yourselves to be delfected into ludicrious arguments by J/asses like Ceasar and his ilk.

The point is that Antan at first said Ryan did not wash dirty dishes because he heard it from a volunteer and the next he changes his mind to "Ryan did clean dirty dishes"... What changed his mind, he wasn't there so WHO changed his mind for him? Ryan, according to the WaPo (right wing leaning paper) Ryan did not arrive until the dinner was over and EVERYTHING was cleaned. Ryan and Romney will do ANYTHING to get elected, including, faking tax plans, BS photo op moments and hiding their real agenda (dang 47%ers) from the people.

At the end of the day this BS photo-op moment is a trivial matter when compared to the Romney/Ryan TOTAL BS tax plan of cutting 20% income across board by getting rid of deductions and big bird. SIMPLE mathematics ( I don't expect Ceasar or other rom-bots to understand) illustrates that their plan is infeasable. The 6 studies R and R use as cover are written by BLOGGERS and one was written by a PAID ROMNEY campaign official. I find it a little sad that the right is trying to dismiss this as unimportant. It speaks to a persons character when they so something like this, and not in a good way. Spending 'a few minutes' cleaning pots isn't exactly doing charity work. it's a photo op. Obama has done this, but they stayed several hours, served food, and cleaned pots and pans after it was done. That is what charity work is.

It speaks to a persons character and in this Ryan fails. It's sad that you think that a potential leader of the U.S. and his character is unimportant, but at this point, I expect little more from the GOP.

Probably the biggest lie that I also find the most amusing is that democrats are more giving and help the needy more than the republicans. The article indicated that Ryan did nothing here. Well what about obama? what has he done??

As president he has put more people in need of a soup kitchen,

Racked up debt to be 16 TRILLION

Spending $1.40 for every $1. that comes in via taxes (that goes on the credit card from the bank of china)

More people on food stamps, welfare and gov assistance than EVER BEFORE

The most people out of work for the longest sustained period of time since the depression (What’s that three letter word? J O B S )

That's what obama has done

That is why Romney and Ryan are loosing in Michigan. They only "remember" beautiful Michigan is during election time.

Okay, since some of you aren't getting the picture clear enough, here is the actual story straight from the Washington Post - he was NOT INVITED, NOR WOULD HE HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO DO ANY OF THIS IF THE MAN IN CHARGE WAS BOTHERED TO HAVE BEEN ASKED!

The head of a northeast Ohio charity says that the Romney campaign last week “ramrodded their way” into the group’s Youngstown soup kitchen so that GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan could get his picture taken washing dishes in the dining hall.

Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, said that he was not contacted by the Romney campaign ahead of the Saturday morning visit by Ryan, who stopped by the soup kitchen after a town hall at Youngstown State University.

“We’re a faith-based organization; we are apolitical because the majority of our funding is from private donations,” Antal said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. “It’s strictly in our bylaws not to do it. They showed up there, and they did not have permission. They got one of the volunteers to open up the doors.”

He added: “The photo-op they did wasn’t even accurate. He did nothing. He just came in here to get his picture taken at the dining hall.”

Ryan had stopped by the soup kitchen for about 15 minutes on his way to the airport after his Saturday morning town hall in Youngstown. By the time he arrived, the food had already been served, the patrons had left, and the hall had been cleaned.

Upon entering the soup kitchen, Ryan, his wife and three young children greeted and thanked several volunteers, then donned white aprons and offered to clean some dishes. Photographers snapped photos and TV cameras shot footage of Ryan and his family washing pots and pans that did not appear to be dirty.

According to a Romney aide not authorized to speak publicly about the event, the campaign followed its usual protocol for impromptu, on-the-road stops by candidates: A staffer was dispatched to the St. Vincent De Paul Society ahead of Ryan’s visit Saturday morning and spoke with a woman in charge on site, who said that it would be fine for the congressman to stop by. The campaign did not contact Antal ahead of the visit.

The woman on site told the Romney staffer that some of the volunteers had already left, but that most were happy to remain until Ryan arrived, according to the aide. After Ryan left the soup kitchen, the woman approached a campaign staffer and expressed gratitude for Ryan’s visit, the aide said.

Chris Maloney, Ohio communications director for the Romney campaign, said that the visit by Ryan had been intended to highlight the work of the soup kitchen volunteers.

“Our campaign and Congressman Ryan were pleased to bring attention to the meaningful charitable contributions the St. Vincent De Paul Society makes to people in need,” Maloney said.

Antal, a self-described independent voter, said that he “can’t fault my volunteers” for letting the campaign in but said that the campaign “didn’t go through the proper channels.”

He noted that the soup kitchen relies on funding from private individuals who might reconsider their support if it appears that the charity is favoring one political candidate over another.

“I can’t afford to lose funding from these private individuals,” he said. “If this was the Democrats, I’d have the same exact problem.”

He added that the incident had caused him “all kinds of grief” and that regardless of whether Ryan had intended to serve food to patrons or wash dishes, he would not have allowed the visit to take place.

“Had they asked for permission, it wouldn’t have been granted. … But I certainly wouldn’t have let him wash clean pans, and then take a picture,” Antal said.

VIDEO: GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan stopped at a soup kitchen in Youngstown, Ohio on Saturday, where he and members of his family washed dishes for several minutes. The head of the charity has since come out saying Ryan’s visit violated the organization’s apolitical status, and that Ryan “just came in here to get his picture taken.”

@ Krestov "I was on the fence until I heard the Republican message that they want less government control of us the people (great I thought!) but then Republicans have publicly stated they want to put into law (ie government control) mandates to ban a woman's right to chose, constitutional changes to ban marriage equality, ban gay men and woman from serving their country in the military."

OK lets take this one at a time.. "ban a woman's right to choose".. So you condone killing a baby because it is her right to choose what to do with her body, BUT you believe it should be illegal for women to get paid to have sex.. It is OK for her to choose what to do, except it really isn't, you just really want to have the option to abort if you accidentally get a woman pregnant, or to control the population of poor people not by keeping them from having sex, but rather by killing anything that comes from having sex. Not hypocritical in the least..

Gay marriage.. there is no BAN on gay marriage, there just isn't any laws allowing it to be recognized by the federal government as an institution that will allow the same tax breaks and insurance breaks that a man and a woman who are married would get.. But see, a man and a woman can copulate, which leads to a higher birth rate, which leads to maintaining the birth rate necessary to sustain an economy. I realize the answer the liberals have is to just legalize the illegal immigrants to sustain the rate of people entering the work force, but personally I would rather this country continues to be sustained by our own population rather than taken over by other cultures. But that leads to another argument doesn't it.. The bottom line is there is no reason the government should give a tax break to two people who are not capable of increasing the population of the workforce.. and adoption doesn't count as it is not actually increasing the population, those children were already born.. it is not an issue of taking care of kids, it is an issue of the magic "2.3" number.. we need a birth rate of 2.3 to sustain the economy.. which is the ONLY reason the government ever gave tax breaks to married couples.. The libs have pushed those tax breaks into another social program, but it isn't about supporting welfare babies, it is about social engineering. Gay marriage IS offensive to christians, and since more than 50% of the population are christian, there is that whole morality issue as well. Morality is a big grey area for liberals though, as is evidenced by condoning abortion.

"The hypocrisy here is breath taking! Lets not even go into the voter ID laws they are pushing."

Yes, it is SO hypocritical to want to have people prove they are not illegal immigrants, underage, or committing some other voter fraud, like using the name and address of a dead person to vote. Just like cashing a check, driving a car, or checking into a hotel, having ID is pretty much a prerequisite of living a life within the bounds of legality. The ONLY reason to push against showing ID to vote is to allow for fraud.

"This changed me form a fence sitter to a Democrat voter. You should not reduce the rights of Americans, reducing rights and changing the Constitution to do so, is un-American."

Perhaps before deciding which side of the fence to jump off you should look at the actual issues instead of reading some liberal media and making a decision based on headlines.

For every case where Romney or Ryan is doing something to appeal to a certain crowd, there is a hundred examples of Obama doing the same. And every single other political candidate since the inception of the lie. There isn't such thing as a candidate who is exactly what he appears to be. It is simple, you vote for the party that most closely resembles your line of thinking: Democrats favor individual over businesses and prefer the government decides who gets the wealth. Republicans favor businesses over individuals and prefers that the wealth goes to those who earn it. It is very simple, and neither side is more right or more wrong. If you think we should all be equal, regardless of how much we contribute, then you are liberal. If you believe that offering a tax break to a small businessman to entice him to open his business in a particular area and stimulate the economy with jobs, then you are republican. If you believe that there should be discipline, structure, and a moral guide in everyone's life, then you are conservative. If you believe there should be social programs for those who didn't save during their life (or lost what they did save), or who won't (or can't) work, or that the people who DO work should provide medical care for those who don't (or can't), then you are a democrat. It is quite simple really, not rocket science. Before you decide that MSN or some other liberal media outlet is telling you everything you need to know about the impact of one candidate's ideas on the global economy, perhaps do some research or take a class on macro-economics. Before you decide that all Christians are bible thumping lunatics that blow up abortion clinics and pick on gay people, try going to church, or reading the bible, and listen to what is actually being said.. Before you decide that Obamacare is the best thing for the U.S., talk to a business owner and maybe someone in the insurance business, and perhaps even a doctor, THEN decide if it is best. Before you start pointing the finger and crying "hypocrisy!", take a look at yourself and what you are saying. Then go and vote.

And besides he was next to the water spigot and he was thirsty and needed lots of water. Then before he left he went into the restroom and took a Mitt while his family waited. Then he went back out to the common folk, the 47% and told them if he and Robme gets elected thats where they will be getting their next meal. Now this is striaght forward talk, and Romney/Ryan need to learn to open up like this, and tell the truth.

ROTFLMAO!!!!

Ahhhhh yes, I see the Liberal bobble heads are trying anything to discredit the Romney/Ryan Express that is barreling down on Barrack Hussein and Joe "Giggles" Biden.

This of course from the same useful idiots who glamorize all their nanny-state lives through a cartoon called "The Life of Julia".

Did the Big Bird schtick run out of gas Libbies?

People are so crazy, they talk about Obama and Romney as if they are two different people. Both are cut from the very same cloth. They are both controlled by the sponsors of tonights debate (why aren't the other presidetial candidates allowed????????!!!!!!!!!!!!) and the corporations paying them to do the work of ALEC. The corporations that are paying for all of you to fight WITH each other instead of FOR each other. Look at their ads all over this page.

They are also under direct orders from the bankers holding all of us as collateral. The bankers who will make the decissions of war. The bankers who will profit from funding both sides of war.

It makes no difference who wins this election. The next president will only be in office for four years. The bankers and the corporate overlords will be here forever...or until there is a big fat revolution.

Oops did I hit a touchy liberal subject. Or how about the 500 billion dollar debt Obama road Mccain about in the town hall debate when those two met. Oops again I guess amother touchy subject since Obama has racked up more debt than the past presidents. But has usual they will blame the republicans because they are not responsible for anything that happens.I guess until they can have something reall and truthful to talk about it will be all about dirty dishes and big bird. WHEW!!!!

Thank God they won't be outsourcing the jobs your boy-toy Barrack Hussein is creating.

You do realize that the majority of the alleged 5 million jobs Barrack has created are in the minimum wage/low-no benefit scale.

These are retail, FOOD SERVICE, hospitality, temp services and other sectors.

Lower-paying jobs, with median hourly wages from $7.69 to $13.83, accounted for just 21% of the job losses during the recession. But they've made up about 58% of the job growth from the end of the recession in late 2009 through early 2012.

In contrast, mid-wage occupations with median hourly wages from $13.84 to $21.13 -- jobs such as construction workers, real estate brokers, and data entry clerks -- have accounted for just 22% of the new jobs in the recovery after making up 60% of the job losses in the recession.

Are ya feelin kinda foolish yet?

There is not job that Americans can't do , but we cant compete with desaventage with illegals who work for 5 Dollars per hour, live 100 in a room and send all their money to Mexico. This is also a gesture of humility. Well done

"Seriously how @!$%#ed up do you have to be to criticize ANYONE for volunteering ANY of their time for ANY reason?"

So lets get this straight.Ryan shows up at a homeless shelter after all the homeless are gone and he doesn't have to see them. When the place is already cleaned up.Then he grabs a couple of clean pans and washes them in front of the camera's taking pictures for his campaign. All in 15 minutes. And you Republicans don't see what's wrong with than. And actually think that is volunteering, really!

That ladies and gentlemen says everything that could be said about the difference between Republicans and Democrats. When President Obama visited the homeless shelter,he actually fed the homeless. He saw and talked to them. And really helped with the clean up.Spending several hours with them. It all boils down to character.President Obama has it and Ryan doesn't.

Wow is all I can say, you took a few of my statements then made some amazing leaps of "logic" ! I did not mention even half the topics you were trying to accuse me of being a hypocrite around, please re-read my post, take it word for word don't read between the lines becasue there are no lines to read between.

Where did I say I believe woman should be paid for sex, I didn't, where did I say it should be used to control the population or stop poor people from having sex, I didn't.

Also your reason against allow gay marriage is not a valid argument. Regardless if two men or woman can or can-not get married will not result in a decrease in the birth-rate. I take it you are a conservative, which I have no problem with. One of the core values of being a Republican is the family unit and the commitment to that unit. How on earth does the creation of ANY strong family unit whether or not they involve children (a) hurt other marriages and (b) reduce the birth rate?

As for there being no-ban on gay marriage here is the list where marriage is not an option becasue of a constitutional ban on two men or two women being able to marry:

      • Alabama
      • Alaska
      • Arizona
      • Arkansas
      • California (with the passage of Prop 8)
      • Colorado
      • Florida
      • Georgia
      • Kansas
      • Kentucky
      • Idaho
      • Louisiana
      • Michigan
      • Mississippi
      • Missouri
      • Montana
      • Nebraska
      • Nevada
      • North Carolina
      • North Dakota
      • Ohio
      • Oklahoma
      • Oregon
      • South Carolina
      • South Dakota
      • Tennessee
      • Texas
      • Utah
      • Virginia
      • Wisconsin

In another area you talk to me about the economy, which I did not touch on so I will not comment on.

Voter ID laws, my problem is these are only being contested by Republicans in the swing States, shame on them, shame, shame, this is so blatant in its reasoning I should not have to spell it out to you. Since 2000 there have been 10 records of in-person voter fraud, really is this worth spending the millions on (only in swing states of course)

A quote from you "Perhaps before deciding which side of the fence to jump off you should look at the actual issues instead of reading some liberal media and making a decision based on headlines"

Yet again you make giant leaps of what you think you know about me, you know nothing, yet you still find it OK to make wild assumptions on how I conduct my research which is simply untrue.

As I finish replying to you, next time try not to generalize or assume you know what my thoughts are on other topics I have not even mentioned. I take my information and news sources from a variety of areas. I have read the white paper submissions on laws, I have read from cover to cover the Ryan budget I read the news then look up the facts and the information for their original source.

Also point out where I called Christians bible thumping lunatics, I am a Christian and I also believe I have no right to judge others and also believe in religion staying out of law making. As for Morality yes I am conservative, I believe that it is immoral for a society to create second class citizens in our own country.

      With that I am done.

Ryan's "mixing with the lesser" is an attempt hoodwink the American public.

Do not be surprised if we see him and family:

      - Giving old clothes to Goodwill

      - Giving old toys to The Salvation Army

      - Shopping at Target

      - Shopping at a 99 cent store

      - Visiting underprivileged schools

      - With bouquets, visiting nursing homes

      - Handing out sandwiches to the homeless

      - Lending a hand to Houses for Humanity

      - Carrying crayons to a Ronald McDonald house

      - Picking up stray animals from the streets

Ryan's hero is Ayn Rand, greed at all cost.

Do not be fooled, folks by this sudden false "concern" that Ryan is dancing with!

      Agreed.

A huge problem is money in politics. The wealthy have "purchased" our system making it difficult for the middle class and the poor to earn their way up the ladder of economic mobility or advocate for justice. It is critical for Obama and Biden to win, to keep all the doors of opportunity from slamming shut.

What exactly was the "good deed" here? All I saw was a campaign making an uninvited stop after the homeless people and most of the volunteers had already left - with the cameras rolling and Congressman Ryan making his kids go along with it. A "good deed" to me would have been taking them there WITHOUT the cameras and giving them a teaching moment in what it really means to not have food or dishes or even a home. I was always taught that good deeds are what you do when there's nobody around to applaud.

Using the story of "Well I met the dead SEALs once." Mom later says SHE doesn't trust Romney and he must stop using her dead sons name. The SEALs best friend recounted the meeting with Wormney, said it was a joke. . Lyin Ryan says ONE Dem supports his plan for Medicare, that Dem from Oregon has since backed away from the draft.. Mittens is using the death of Amb. Stevens for political gain. Sad really. Amb. Stevens dad thinks its disgusting. Sure Obama used Big Bird in an ad, but Wormney stepped in that pile of bird @!$%# himself.

I think that it's sad that a man can't stop by a charity and help out a bit without it being deemed inappropriate.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone stopped by a charity and helped, even if only for 5 minutes? Imagine how much these charities would appreciate it.

NorCalModerate, while donations to churches qualify for the tax exemption, churches don't necessarily qualify as truly charitable organizations. Mitt Romney's charitable giving is primarily to the Mormon church. Do you know what charitable work they do?

A study co-written by Cragun and recently published in Free Inquiry estimates that the Mormon Church donates only about 0.7 percent of its annual income to charity; the United Methodist Church gives about 29 percent.

        http://www.businessweek.com/printer/articles/62364-how-the-mormons-make-money

Romney may have given 10% of his income to his church, but less than 1% of it went to charitable works.

Most of the stories about Romney are told by the people the acts were done to, not normally by Romney.

Romney, like most conservatives prefer to do the acts in private, out of sight. It's kind of hard to do that right now.

        • 10 votes
        #2.12 - Tue Oct 16, 2012 4:18 PM EDT

Giving 10% of your income to your church or risk excommunication can hardly be considered as charity, "norcal". Romney does not win "hands down" by buying his ticket to heaven. Trying to pass it off as voluntary "charity" is immoral and deceitful.

True compassion from Ryan would have entailed setting a time to visit and actually speaking to the volunteers and the homeless people about their hardship and their views. A "man" vying for the position of Vice-President can do more for the homeless than scrubbing a stupid pot.

Yes - it would be incredible if everyone did a little bit here and there to help those in need. The fact is, a man in Ryan's position can do much, much more than scrub a pot and pose for pictures - and, clearly, he is not up to the task.

Given Ryan's rhetoric and record in Congress, this visit seems completely disingenuous. Shame on you for falling for it and not expecting more from your candidates.

"I was always taught that good deeds are what you do when there's nobody around to applaud"

I'll remember that next time I see a bad car accident and there are a lot of people around. I'll just stand around and wait to help until all the people have dispersed. What kind of logic is that? Anyone can do good deeds regardless of the audience.

To shockedanddisquested==I agree with most of what you had to say except, you are not excommunicated if you don't donate 10%. Donations to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (mormon) is between you and the Lord. We are encouraged to tithe 10% but that is up to me.

Look Ryan really didn't care about a soup kitchen except for an opportunity to get a picture taken. You do things out of the goodness of your heart for others not to get recognition or praise. I have done service all my live and never wanted my picture taken or my name in the paper.

One last thing I will say is that if Romney and Ryan get elected there will be alot, and I mean alot more soup kitchens.

            Obama/Biden 2012 for our future.

There are many things that Romney has done to help his community, however with regard to Obama that says be with 47% there is no record of a single work of charity which he personally made before entering to the public life.

Come on First Read I am sure you can find a more important topic than a candidate was washing dirty or clean dishes. How about a discussion about Hillary falling on the sword for Obama over Libya? Or maybe something about another $250 million in government loans plus a $100 million in state tax breaks for A123 Systems that just filed for Bankruptcy. Another Green Energy gone bust, looks like Obama picked another loser.

Possibly Ryan knows he should find out what it is like to work in the private sector. That would explain why they only stayed long enough to take a few pictures and get the hell out of Dodge.

sfcret: Better sit yourself down and do some reading on the A123 bankruptcy. It appears there's more to the picture than what you bellowing. It sounds like a Romney deal, you know, where there's a bit of slight of hand going on. Here's a good place to start:

              http://www.a123systems.com/087cf5d5-5f36-4799-bc66-7d04f3f4a88d/media-room-2012-press-releases-detail.htm

Aug. 8, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A123 Systems (Nasdaq:AONE), a developer and manufacturer of advanced Nanophosphate® lithium iron phosphate batteries and systems, today announced that it has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU)with Wanxiang Group Corporation establishing the framework for a strategic investment through which Wanxiang would invest up to $450 million in A123. Wanxiang is China's largest auto components manufacturer and one of China's largest non-government-owned companies. Wanxiang's proposed investment in A123 is intended to create the capital structure necessary for the company to continue growing its core businesses, and alignment with Wanxiang is also expected to substantially strengthen A123's access to the growing vehicle electrification and grid-scale energy storage markets in China.

Adam -- how do you know Obama did charity? Was it to get the attention of the Chicago Mob? I don't see that this "soup kitchen" stuff is an important issue. However, if Ryan really wanted attention, he could have invited the news media there ahead of time and told them in advance what he was going to do. Or, he could have had one of those extremely over-priced per plate meals -- like some of the Dems do so well. I'm so glad you people are better off than you were 4 yrs. ago. I sure am not -- nor do I know anybody that is, Dem or Repub. I know some of both, and most of them are crying.

Romney picked a lot of losers. In fact, the reason he won't show his tax returns is because he owns interest in some Chinese companies. One in Illinois where he owns 51%, had record profits, but is laying off workers and moving to China to pay workers a whopping .99 cents per hour. He had a 38% approval rate as a governor. Cut education funding, overcrowded classrooms, cut VA funding and left a $1Billion deficit. Romney contracted with a gentleman who outsourced the State customer service center to India. He creates a lot of jobs overseas.

@ Dotties.. FYI.. Ryan went straight from college to Congress. NEVER worked an honest day in his life since college. President Obama was a Professor and actually worked in the community. The GOP forgot to work for the little people instead they work for the Cock brothers, Woddy Johnson of the Jets, Rush, Hannity, Sarah Palin, The Jews in Vegas who own casinos. The Jews around the world who own America.

Mittens said the best way for his 5 bastard sons to serve America was in HIS administration, not by serving in the US Military. I served during the 1st Gulf War in the Navy at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, VA.. . Mittens dodged the draft 5 times, got some dodges for college some for spreading his religion in Paris France none-the-less. At least OUR current VP's son is in the Armed Forces and has served.

Pauley Shore is a pathetic attempt at a human. Seniors who give Mittens the win are in for a RUDE AWAKENING. Good bye Medicare.. They will screw with current Medicare recipients as well.

The drums of war are being beat every day by Mittens. He is like Bush.. Wants to continue the RAHOWA in the Middle-East on behalf the Evangelicals here in Amercia..

DB - What does the fact that he was invited have to do with anything? Did the employee also invite him to put on an apron and wash dishes for a few minutes for the benefit of the cameras in tow? If anything, it shows extremely poor judgment on his (and his handlers') part. Most people (who don't watch Fox) can see right through that phony BS. Seriously? You wash dishes at a soup kitchen? Are there any photos of him washing dishes (outside of campaign season) at soup kitchens in Janesville? Better yet, are there pictures of him donating his time to soup kitchens or homeless shelters in a place like Milwaukee? Phony - just like the entire Republican platform.

The ignorance here continues to astound...Greg Smith: the CEOs and hedge fund managers behind Romney make FAR more (and for longer periods of time) than any actor, musician or ballplayer. An actor's earning's go down as soon as they pass a certain age threshold (usually when ther first wrinkles start appearing). A ballplayer's earnings are gone pretty much the moment they retire in their late 30s or early 40s. A musician, even a savvy one who has cut innovative deals, is paid peanuts compared to the companies who own the masters, and names and logos, etc...wake up, you fool. There's a reason that the rich back Romney, and it aint because he's gonna appeal more to the poor...

Chris, you know what is pathetic about the completely moronic statement by Greg? First of all, EACH of the Koch Brothers has a PERSONAL NET worth of 17.5 BILLION. I don't know of ANY actor or musician in the entertainment industry that has that kind of personal net worth. Secondly, there is a difference between the people in the entertainment industry supporting a candidate and the two wealthiest men in the country who are the personal owners of the wealthiest oil company in the country, if not the world. Why can't Republicans see that these people like Romney and the Kochs have their own interests at heart. Not America or its people.

DB has no idea how much the Koch bros gave to "politics" because the supreme court says they don't have to report it. AND THEY DON'T REPORT IT!. They intentionally avoid by all means possible revealing the details of their political contributions. They invented the multi-layered PAC system just for the purpose of hiding how much and to whom they give. So DB, unless you sit in on the meetings where these decisions are made, (and I'm pretty sure you don't), you have just destroyed any semblance of credibility you may have thought you had.

It is my opinion that Ryan didn't wash anything. Look at his apron, it is way to dry and clean for someone washing dishes. I also believe that the poor director was coerced to flip flop as he did. Does my opinion matter? Only to me.

Gregory: you are not telling the truth, or your insurance company is not telling you the truth. It certainly makes sense that companies that are not reputable would do something like that as a way to make people like you upset. They don't want this law because they will no longer be able to rape their customers.

Agreed. Clean dishes? Dirty? Who cares - it makes no difference - though I sure wish MY kitchen looked this clean when I was getting to the pots and pans:

                        JoAnne,

Thanks for the link! The text under the video ... priceless!

Ryan, this like your marathon lie is just PATHETIC! If you want to show that you care with wife and kids in tow, why not schedule something and be there at the START of the event????

Thanks for the link. Last time I had anything to do with washing pots, there was a 3-step method. Wash, rinse, SANITIZE!! You NEVER wipe pots and pans with a towel. That would have the Health Department suspend your license!

The first American ambassador since 1979 has been murdered. Joe Biden has admitted that the WH was unaware of what happened. (no news services or intelligence meetings available?) Instead of CIA or State Dept spokespeople, Ambassador Rice and campaign managers are making several different statements regarding last month's terrorist attack in Libya.

A teenage girl in Pakistan was shot by the Taliban for advocating education for females. She has been transported to UK for medical and safety reasons. Pakistan, the ally whose schizophrenia we financially enable.

Boeing and other major employers have been instructed by the Federal government NOT to inform employees of mass layoffs due to sequestration. These employers have been promised that any legal fees incurred from lawsuits created by their violation of the WARN Act will be paid for with federal funds.

And lemmings are using the excuse of Ryan supposedly washing a clean dish as justification to vote for Obama.

THIS is why this country is so @!$%#ED

Every now and then someone (not Dems) make a comment that shows some sense. Thanks. All this other stuff regarding a "soup kitchen" is so stupid and childish. What Ryan did is no more than marketing. And believe me, Obama has done a lot of marketing, obviously in lieu of doing his job.

Obama's plan for the next four years is the same as the last four years -- traveling, vacations, making sure his wife and kids have a great time and learn about the world (at least, the peaceful part of it), and of course, doing some marketing so the American people will know he has them in mind. No more politicking. Maybe no president should be in office over four years -- wouldn't give them much time to blame their predecessor.

I wonder how Lyin' Ryan would feel if this kitchen ends up losing funding because of his stupid human trick. I guess they would just get Maloney to toss out more Baloney.

The only reason the communications directed this is because the photo-op blew up in their face. You can bet had they not gotten caught his words would have been how Ryan had stopped by a food kitchen to help the needy.

Being First Lady must be a fun position to be in -- you get to travel the world, educate your kids by taking them to places only other kids dream about, and spend a lot of those poor dumb taxpayers' dollars doing so. Oh, and I almost forgot, you get to have lots of lowly servants helping you and security taking care of you. This First Lady has really shown us what being rich and being a President's wife entails. Somebody should try to figure out how many trips she has taken -- not just how much she spends for these trips, her clothes and shoes, etc. That's almost important as this "soup Kitchen" fiasco. Let it alone -- if he wanted to see a "soup kitchen", that should be the end of it. No Dems casting blame, as usual.

Gerri.... I was in and out of the Regan and Bush I White houses... You wouldn't believe what Nancy spent of clothes..... but we forgive her, it's part of the job. Those pearls Barbara wore every day,,,, Well over $$$ half a million. She had Kenneth Lane do a knock off of them and told the world that hers were fake. But they were her mother's . We forgave her.

You have no idea what having to live in the White House is like. You cease to have a life in fact. I think you need to lay off The First Lady. It suggests you not only are clueless but have no class..... or rather it seems you have tons of class, but it appears to be quite on the "L O W" end.

Since you do not know anything about me, I will pretend you didn't write that comment about class. I'm not talking about jewelry or high priced clothes or shoes. I'm basically talking about all the traveling. All of the first ladies have done a lot of traveling, I'm sure, but just not as well advertised as this one. I am a free person supposedly, and I admit I am a Republican. And guess what? A white Christian. But I do respect your and other people's opinions. I am a mother and a grandmother. I have been an executive secretary, administrative assistant, real estate broker and medical transcriptionist. My kids and their friends would tell you I'm a wonderful mother and grandmother. I am proud of my accomplishments and I do not need you or anyone to tell me I have never had a life. Due to things beyond my control, I raised three kids, age 11, 13, and 15 when this happened, by myself, working three jobs -- one five day a week job and one weekend job, and one part-time job. My husband was sick seven years and I worked and took care of him, also. I'm not super woman by any means and I do not need pity from anyone, but I am definitely not stupid as you try to make me out to be. And I'm sure I have a lot more class than you do because I make it a point not to tell anyone they have no class. Regardless of what kind of situation this country is in, I am proud to be an American!

                                                  Bold type is mine....

"After a month of conflicting statements and partisan criticism, the circumstances surrounding the attack that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, have become clouded in ambiguities and questions: Did the attack grow out of anger against an American-made video mocking the Prophet Muhammad, or was it waged by an affiliate of Al Qaeda out to mark the 11th anniversary of its attack on United States soil?

To Libyans who witnessed the assault and know the attackers, there is little doubt what occurred: a well-known group of local Islamist militants struck without any warning or protest, and they did it in retaliation for the video. That is what the fighters said at the time, speaking emotionally of their anger at the video without mentioning Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden or the terrorist strikes of 11 years earlier. And it is an explanation that tracks with their history as a local militant group determined to protect Libya from Western influence."

Hey Oscar Rules can you remember when:

Rodger P. Davies United States Ambassador to Cyprus died August 19, 1974, in Nicosia, Cyprus. He was killed by Greek Cypriot gunmen, during a demonstration outside the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia. Davies and Antoinette Varnavas, an embassy secretary and a Greek Cypriot national, were killed by a burst of machine-gun fire through a shuttered window, coming from a nearby building.

The President at the time in 1974, was Republican Gerald R. Ford. He failed the security of the United States by not beefing up security at the embassy prior to the sniper attack. I remember that time very well.

If you did know, you wouldn't be quacking like a duck on this site...

                                                        Red ???:

I was personally in Nicosia two years later. The marines fired tear gas into the crowd that day, the UN bailed. U.S. Sixth Fleet (Flagship USS Little Rock CLG 4), was standing by to evacuate foreign nationals. The Marine House received reinforcements. The Greek Cypriots wanted their land back from the invading Turks. Ford expressed shock! Anything else you want me to edify you about this incident sunny?

You know what, gregory, anyone can do a quick search to find things out, so don't think by any stretch of the imagination that you know anything more about where I live then I do. The oil companies, mainly Chevron, hold this state by the balls, but finally we are fighting them back. They do not get away with the tax subsidies that they used to. And that is because we finally have people in this state who are realizing that this state is being raped, and now Alaska is finally the one squeezing the balls. So, why don't you just worry about your own state and we Alaskans will worry about ours.

Thinking this is a genuine interest in the facility and its operation and the good that it does, they agree. Ryan gets there and Ryan simply “takes over”; with the assumption that, “You do know who I am“, therefore I can do anything I want to do. Dumbfounded and flat out flabbergasted at what is happening, the staff of the soup kitchen stands speechless; after all the Secret Service are in tow. Immediately after Ryan leaves, they call headquarters, “Oh!! My good gosh you will never believe what Ryan just did”. And this is the kind of men you want running the Country??? Arrogant, pompous, beyond supper rich men, that think a fake photo-op in soup kitchen will make them look more human?!?!?!?

As for Clinton, he needs to have a deeply serious conversation with Hilliary about her accepting responsibility for the death of our Ambassador and 2 NAVY SEALS. The Buck stops with Obama, he's President, not Hilliary. Shows what a low life Obama is that he'd lie and then let Hilliary accept the blame.

Say what they will, but take it from someone who has worked in a restaurant and washed dishes for a living: that sink area was SPOTLESS. That only happens at the very end of the shift after all the dishes are done and the sink and counter are washed down.

Therefore Ryan clearly came in after everything had been done, as originally reported, and "washed" already-clean dishes for the photo-op. You would expect to see napkins and food spattered over the counter and trays of dishes and pots and pans lined up at the washer if Ryan had really been there to wash dishes -- not the spotless little work area shown in the picture.

Best case scenario: they cleaned up the area for him before he began washing, which still means the photo op was staged.

The middle class and women if you are apart of this group of people the choice is obvious. If you want the government to take away your choice to choose the choice is obvious. People who are pro life should not push their views on those who are pro choice. I have the Presidents back!!!

If you are pro choice, good for you, but if you want an abortion, pay for it yourself! People who are pro life should not have to pay taxes to pay for other peoples abortions. Whether you are pro life or pro choice it has nothing to do with the government. You are just looking for more entitlements (like free contraceptives -- if you want them, pay for them yourself!)

Oh, and while I am pro-choice, I feel that the decision should be between the woman and her doctor and everyone else can butt out of the decision. I also feel that it is the woman's responsibility to pay for an abortion if she wants one, just as she should pay for her own pills and he should pay for his own condoms. They should be responsible for their own lives and not expect the taxpayers to pay for their partying lifestyle.

Didn't do anything constructive in spite of having the House and Congress. What is his plan for the next four years? Tax the Middle Class he cares so much about.

AND for all their rhetoric about Mitt and Ryan "not being for women" : Yesterday, I predicted in one of my blogs that he was going to throw Hillary under the bus. Now, it's been all over the news today that Hillary is taking "responsibility" for the terrible deaths due to security breach. She even said that the buck stops with her. Everyone in Washington knows that is a famous Truman quote: Truman was the President at the time when he owned up to a mistake. Hillary is not the President - She is willing to step up so that he can continue with his debate tonight and hopefully no one will ask him about all the LIES he has told the country and the families of the four dead Americans. Hiding behind a woman's skirt is not very presidential. It is what cowards do. Obama is for Obama.

As if he hasn't done enough inexcusable damage to the Office Of The President and What It Stands For: Watch CNN: They are out in force saying that the only reason any of this was in the news was because Romney and Ryan were using it as Talking Points.

I would much rather have Ryan pose for a harmless photo instead of letting a woman cover his back.
