Subscribe to RSSCORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Going into tonight’s vice-presidential debate, President Barack Obama did not mention his vice president during his remarks at the University of Miami. Instead he focused on labeling his opponent, former Gov. Mitt Romney, a flip-flopper.
“When he's asked about the cost of his tax plan, he just pretends it doesn't exist. What $5 trillion tax cut? I don't know anything about a $5 trillion tax cut. Don't pay no attention to the $5 trillion tax cut on my website,” the president joked.
This was part of a coordinated attack that one Obama campaign staffer previewed earlier today when she said of Romney, “If you’ve been tuned into the race for two years or you simply clicked on his website, you’d be very familiar with his positions that are very similar to the extreme right wing of his party on many issues.”
And this speech made it clear that in the closing weeks of the election, comparing Romney to himself is the tactic the campaign is going to attempt to capitalize on. “He’s trying to go through an extreme makeover. After running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative. Mitt Romney is trying to convince you that he was severely kidding,” the president said.
The president’s tone in the Sunshine State seemed tougher than even his speeches that came directly after last week’s underperformance in the first presidential debate. He bashed Romney’s economic plan and tried to link him to congressional republicans:
"Governor Romney will rubber-stamp the top-down agenda of this Republican Congress the second he takes office, and we cannot afford that future," Obama said. "His plan will not create jobs, it will not help the middle class, it will not speed the recovery, it will slow down the recovery, it will not reduce the deficit, it will not expand opportunity. We can't afford it. We're not going back. We are moving forward."
The president also pushed the start of early voting in Florida, “On October 27th…You can choose whether we go back to the policies that got us into this mess, or you can choose to keep moving forward with policies that have been getting us out of this mess. That’s the choice.”
According to the latest NBC News/WSJ/ Marist Poll, the president has a slim 1-point lead in Florida. Among likely voters, Obama is polling at 48% to Romney’s 47%.

Mr. President, you do not know what you are talking about again. During the primaries the other Republican candidates were saying that Romney was to liberal. He has been labeled as a centrist. Sorry, but Romney is not the Romney that your campaign has invented. You found that out in the debate. Instead of talking about your opponent you should be talking about what you are doing to do to fix the economy. You do agree that after 4 years the economy is a mess. Your administration said that the stimulus bill would fix the unemployment problem. According to your administration unemployment should now be less than 6% but instead it is at 7.8%. Without conditions to include any action of congress, you promised that the 2012 federal deficit would not exceed 229.27 billion dollars yet in actuality the deficit exceeded 1.1 trillion dollars. You talk about starting to pay down the debt but your White House is still predicting huge deficits for at least another decade. You have yet to present a plan to pay back the debt. You have yet to tell the tax payers what all this federal borrowing is really going to cost them. Talk about being truthful, is your administration going to insist that it was a video that got our ambassador killed? It is you sir, Mr. President, whom that people cannot believe.

I just read that story over on the vine. Billy Graham in his day would have never sat down with a Mormon candidate and given his endorsement. Their beliefs are radically different.

What is that Layton, I was kind of confused with their abrupt halting of Ms Lambs testimony during the hearings. But on the four deaths in Lybia, all of DC can take part of the blame for that. And in the end, the buck does stop with the president. I don't know if there was some kind of horrible communications screwup, but I did come away from the hearing thinking that Ms Lamb was probably not qualified for the job.

The recent history of Republican Party suggests they will always seek to increase Defense spending. For the last 50 years, this has been a unifying theme of the Republican Party... more for defense.
When defense budgets go up, it makes it far easier to go to war.

I think when we are engaged in taking out other regimes, like Lybias past dictator, and trying to establish some kind of order in a war-torn, splintered area, this might be expected to happen. Most of the four testifying said additional support would not have made a difference, unless that support came with artillery power. They should have just closed that post, but it is not what the ambassador wanted.
Nothing new here, the dem leftys are terrified, there is a strong possibility, they will have to work, for what they want.

He did not call it a bump in the road, and as far as what he was doing publicly, I don't think we are really privy to what is going on behind the scenes at all levels. If I remember correctly, the president was attending some function while the take down of Bin Laden was proceeding. We don't know, and there is really no sense in second-guessing.

Diogenese - Romney wants to strengthen our military to project the kind of strength that would make any foe think twice before messing with us. He wants to get rid of Obamacare which will be the single largest tax increase on the Middle class in our history. Obama took great steps to be sure the parts of Obamacare that are goinig to hit your and my wallet doesn't kick in until next year. Romney plans to unleash the energy opportunities in this country to not only bring down the cost of energy but also to add hundreds of thousands of good paying jobs. Romney is a caring disciplined man who has quietly donated millions and personally given a hand to hundreds of less fortunate Americans. He is the kind of President that our youth can look up to as the best of America and a role model for all.

Obamacare, as you call it, does some very good things. I haven't heard how Romney will preserve these portions although he claims he wants to. If Romney can't explain how he will enact the portions of Obamacare he wants to keep why should I believe that he can?
Both Romney and Obama claim that they want to improve our energy independance. Neither one has provided any details. Why should I believe either one?
Jimmy Carter was a kindly and generous man who gave much of his wealth and time to charitible causes - he was not a very effective president. So why should I consider Romney's generosity a qualification for office?
Platitudes are not what I am looking for -give me something of substance.
newday - if the media covered it better you would be aware that Obama has the military trying to prosecute a war without any collateral loss of life - meaning protect the local people to the point that our guys can't protect themselves. In any war there is loss of life - Obama has made the calculated decision that we can lose our guys in an effort to have less civilian casualties - talk to any military - they are being asked to fight with one arm behind their back - if we aren;t goiing to fight to win - we need to bring these guys home. Would you want your son/daughter or spouse to lose their life and not have the American population aware of it - have no one thankful that their life may have been lost - but it helped us 'win' and save more lives in the long run? The lives are now being lost in a war that we are not fighting to win and the media is treating these deaths as if they are not happening - Obama has them swept under the carpet - no talking about it - no reporting on it.
