Biden 'fired up and ready to go' for debate

Vice President Joe Biden is “fired up and ready to go” for the debate with Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Thursday.

Traveling with reporters to Miami for President Barack Obama’s campaign events, Psaki said the president and campaign has “great confidence in the vice president’s performance.”

She added later that the president called Biden on Air Force One during the flight to wish him luck tonight.

Psaki pushed back, however, on the notion, that it’s up to Biden to blunt the momentum Mitt Romney built up after his performance in last week’s presidential debate, from which he emerged, by most accounts, the winner.

Indicating, perhaps, Biden’s line of attack against Ryan, she said the real question was “which Paul Ryan will show up this evening,” saying he has a tendency to be misleading about his positions on Medicare and tax cuts. But she also noted that, as the opponents will be sitting down, the debate will likely be "more of a conversation" than the first presidential debate, which featured both candidates sparring from podiums at opposite sides of the stage.

At the president's campaign event later in Miami, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson was much more bullish when previewing the vice president's debate performance, saying he would make "mincemeat" of Ryan Thursday night.

NBC's Shawna Thomas contributed to this report.

JFK,

Romney hid his record at the debate last week very disgracefully.

Most likely RYAN will try to hide his extreme, extreme, record on women's healthk, among other issues.

Paul Ryan co-sponsored 38 anti-abortion measures, consistent with TODD AKIN.

And Ryan said YESTERDAY, there is no daylight on this issue between him and Romney.

What you refuse to admit is that Romney and Ryan lie constantly. Trying to make that go away won't work. My calling them on it is fact - not baseless argument. Try to understand the difference. I know it's hard for someone like you!

SS: What lie do we think Ryan will be flinging tonight? Will he talk about his war on women; how he hates minorities; how poor people are insignificant?

Some of the debate questions have been leaked:

For VP Biden:

1. Could you tell us your life story?

2. Have you seen the President today? How is he?

3. Do you have a dog as nice as Bo? Tell us about him.

4. Explain why the Republicans hate women.

5. You, unlike your opponent, favor good schools, correct?

6. I know this out of scope of what we're supposed to do, but could you do your 'accents' for us? I love the 7-11 Indian guy one.

7. That is a very nice tie. Where did you get it?

For Ryan:

1. Your budget plan has been described as being racist, sexist and against the poor. Could you explain why?

2. Do you and your party think you will win your war on women?

3. You? Vice-President? Who are you trying to kid?

4. Why do the Packers suck?

5. Did you bring Romney's tax returns like we told you to do?

6. In 60 seconds, explain the countries budget problems that were caused by Bush.

7. Lets talk about education. Why do you hate children?

Spanky

You conservatives rant about the $16 trillion debt and blame it on President Obama because he was not able to pay it down during a recession caused by the Bush policies .... policies that Romney wants to reinstate.

Bush inherited a healthy economy and immediately set about his plan to cut taxes, making the tired old Republican claim that it will help the economy and that it "is your money, not the government's". Why was it not important to pay off the $5 trillion debt that we had when he took office before the tax cut was implemented?

Why was it not important to Bush and the Republicans to raise taxes to pay for the two wars? Could it be that the wars would not have been so popular if people actually had to pay for them? [And how popular would that war have been if the draft had been reinstated to provide the human fodder for the war?

So here is the Republican plan. Double down on the tax plan that more than doubled the national debt during the Bush years and caused a recession.

What makes anyone believe that putting even more money into the hands of the very wealthy individuals and the largest corporations will create jobs? The wealthy and the large corporations are sitting on more money than they have had in the history of the world. Where are the jobs? They will continue to sit on their money until the middle class has money to buy what business is selling. How does an upper income tax cut do anything at all for the middle class?

The idea that people create jobs because they have more money in the bank is absurd. People hire employees because they believe the hiring of those employees will make them money. Period. Anyone who hires someone to work for him just because they have the money to do so is an idiot and a spendthrift. Trickle down does not work. When George H. W. Bush called it "voodoo economics" during the Republican primary campaign three decades ago he was right.

Republican policies got us into this mess and they continue to block jobs bills that would help us get out of it. Think of how bad it can get if Romney is reelected and the Congress goes along with his idiot idea to spend an additional $2 trillion on the military while reducing taxes. If we elect this guy we deserve the pain it will cause.

It just keeps getting worse for Obama - so this is somehow Romney's fault, because he talks about it?

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said Thursday that the “entire reason” the terrorist attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans has “become the political topic it is” is because Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan talk about the attack.

STEPHANIE CUTTER: In terms of the politicization of this — you know, we are here at a debate, and I hope we get to talk about the debate — but the entire reason this has become the political topic it is, is because of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. It’s a big part of their stump speech. And it’s reckless and irresponsible what they’re doing.

[CNNs] BROOKE BALDWIN: But, Stephanie, this is national security. As we witnessed this revolution last year, we covered it–

CUTTER: It is absolutely national security–

BALDWIN: –it is absolutely pertinent. People in the American public absolutely have a right to get answers.

The first thing Biden should do is confirm that Ryan is Ryan and has not been taken over by a Romney imposter. After that has been confirmed, upon the first
flip that Ryan state Biden should flop him with the truth and say, hey Paul be
a man and stand for what you say and say what you believe in. The survival of America is too important than to have your party play the flip flop game, move to the center game or lie to the American people game. Now you know your Presidential candidate stated he does not have a plan to cut taxes by $5
trillion dollars, however when you were asked the same question and asked to
explain the math to how you and Mitt would cut taxes by $5 trillion dollars
you stated you did not have enough time to explain the math. Mitt now states he does not have a $5 trillion dollar tax cut plan, but you have Mitt's plan but not the time to explain the math to the plan- Question who is lying, you or Mitt?

Psaki pushed back, however, on the notion, that it’s up to Biden..."

Of course I mean that with all due respect. I've often thought that baseball would be more interesting to watch on television if they just condensed everything down. Cut out all the crotch scratching, spitting, etc. Just show every ball, strike, or hit. You could probably get a whole game down to half an hour. That I would watch.

dangerfield -- I realize that many strategic aspects of the game would be lost with my condensed version. However, since I am not a manager or talent scout, I don't feel the need to spend such time watching baseball on television. I used to love to watch the Rockies at Coors field. That's a nice stadium, and yes, there is something positive to be said about watching a complete game in person -- you feel the energy and atmosphere.

Biden will try to keep the abysmal record hidden. Today we hear another diplomatic security officer was assassinated in Yemen. Will Obama hide this one under the rug and call it another "BUMP IN THE ROAD" or will he say the dreaded word "terrorism"?? Diplomacy is important, but when self preservation is involved, bowing and scraping to your enemy must come to an end. Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration have projected weakness without projecting strength at the same time. These two components are necessary if we truly want to have peace. that is were the time tested adage "Walk softly and carry a big stick", comes in. What happens when you project weakness? American deaths, 27 countries aflame including all of the Middle East, much of Africa, London, Sydney, Paris, Antwerp. Diplomats died, they have hung Obama in effigy, chanted "Obama we are Osama", burned the American flag, etc. Clinton and Obama need to go back to diplomacy school. This is a prime example of inexperience. And to think, we were focused on the abysmal economy and got snowed on foreign affairs!! Romney/Ryan 2012

MrsYD - you honestly don't have a clue do you? The middle east has been "aflame" for all of our lifetime - try to keep up! We added to that "flame" by invading Iraq - a country that had done NOTHING to us.

Bush was hung in effigy as was Ronald Reagan - your point??? The United States is hated for our wealth and our freedom - we have been for ages. Again, try to keep up!

Your total lack of intelligence is overwhelming. Did you not see Romney insult our ALLIES during his trip? Did you not read the deputy PM of Australia's quote about the 'crazies and crackpots of the Republican party that are destroying the economy?"

Our flag has been burned by other countries since I was a child. Were you just not paying attention? And, other countries have more respect for us now than they did under Bush.

You have no clue about anything yet you post it for everyone to see. You look ridiculous. Go read something to try to educate yourself - your school did a sorry job!

      Barbara Jackson

All the administration had to do was say, hey our people are requesting more security, we need more money to provide it. The bottom line is that the Ambassador requested additional resources and they were denied by the state department.

Congress was in the dark because the state department was not informing them that the danger was increasing.

When Obama realized that the popular Senior citizens' bridge insurance would end October 1, he couldn't have angry senior citizens vote him out, so he took $30 Billion from the Women's free contraception program to create a stop gap, "trial" program for the Seniors to sign up for. Funding runs out in January because of it.

IF Obama really wanted to fund better security to keep these people safe, he would have done it.

The mantra of this administration is that our relations are getting better. If it is getting better, you can't have increased security given for "no reason at all".

I wonder if Mr. Ryan will channel his inner child, throw a temper tantrum and walk off the stage when asked hard questions he doesn't like or when called on his "inconsistencies"? Could be a hoot!

Ryan has the joy of trying to explain how Romney will pay for the Medicare to last 10 years when Ryan himself had to count on the ObamaCare savings.

I have confidence in Joe. Though I wonder if he will say things like 'babbling buffoon' or 'you (Paul Ryan) sound like an idiot'? Probably not, he's far to educated and respectful for that.

I half hope Biden would start off by saying he has clear eyes, a full heart, he's fired up and ready to go. We have spirit, yes we do. We have spirit, how 'bout you? Better yet, take the Friday Night Lights analogy one step further: this Friday night, all across America, teams are starting playoffs and tournaments. Both the players and their parents expect the teams to all play by the rules, just like the hard working parents expect all in this country to play fair and play by the rules. But when you have one team that decides not to play by the rules, to try to injure players from the other team, we know that isn't fair or right. When one team insists on only "no," and meets before even the coin toss to decide who to injure on the other team, we know that aren't interested in a fair game.

Biden knows the names of the GOP senators (who were long time friends) who confided to him after the election that they could not offer him any votes. He also knows that Paul Ryan was part of the dinner meeting of the GOP leadership with Frank Luntz and Newt that took place the night of the inauguration. Hope he brings it up.

If it's not a $5 Trillion Tax Cut because they're going to close loopholes and limit deductions then why not just tell us which loopholes and deductions?

If they like parts of Health Care Reform, isn't this what we've always known...that they're just going to repeal and put everything back except the mandate (which was a GOP idea anyway)?

I really hope that Joe talks some about the Recovery Act legislation. He was an integral part of that and he is extremely knowledgeable about what is in it and how it helped us during the hemorrhaging months right after President Obama was elected, and how it is designed to build upon the future. Biden is the chief oversight guy on its progress. If anyone is interested in seeing what that unfairly demonized piece of legislation has and is doing for this country, go to www.recovery.gov . I know that Republicans won't, and we know why. An extremely interesting book on this subject that I am currently reading and that should be read is called "The New New Deal" by Michael Grunwald.

        Alaska...

Two years ago Biden said the "Recovery Act" had kicked into gear and called it "Recovery Summer"...said we'd be seeing 500,000 new jobs per month for the foreseeable future.

        And he's "knowledgeable" ???

In the newspaper today...75-80% of all money for jobs went to government jobs. AS Mr. Obama himself was filmed and quoted saying " Those shovel-ready jobs weren't as shovel-ready as we had thought".

And you're saying Biden was in charge of things ??? Mr. Oversight ???

President Obama never stated that everything was going to be a perfect success. No President can. You would really have to read the book to have a better understanding of what the Recovery Act is all about. It's also very enlightening, but not surprising, the complicity and downright despicable manner in which the Republicans went about to keep it from passing. All Republicans were told, and I mean TOLD, that they could add anything into the Recovery bill when it got to Congress, but they were told that they would be voting no to all of it. Those Republicans who were waivering and looking like they might give a vote yes, were threatened and bullied by the likes of Boehner and Cantor, among others. And don't think for a minute that Paul Ryan was not in on it, because he was right in the thick of it. They did not care what was happening to this country. They were doing everything in their power to sideswipe the new president.

        Thanks, Layton!

I hope Joe talks about the Violence Against Women Act he got passed, hope Equal Pay for Equal Work, Ryan voted No, sicc'em Joe!

I admire, but don't share, your optimism on this point. They know that they get style points for lying, so they'll dip into that well a lot.

Ryan is a little like Peyton Manning. He's a "timing" quarterback. Throw off his timing and he gets rattled. Ryan will not expect to get called out or challenged on his lies. If Biden pushes him for honest answers and stays on point, Ryan will not be able to perform well.

I don't know what the debate format is, so opportunities for direct interation might not be available.

I just saw a middle-aged Caucasian woman on make a total fool of herself when Chris Matthews asked her about tonight's debate.

"....I think Obama is a Communist", as Matthews kept asking her why did she think that way she could not come up with a reason.

Then I thought what McCain said to a similar woman when she called him a Muslim. Of course we know he corrected her dumb ass.

Now, I maybe not old enough to know what it was like to struggle through the Civil Rights and Cold War eras, but now I can empathize. It is still alive and well today.

I give an excerpt of Joan Walsh's "What's the Matter with White People?"

Right-wing culture warriors blamed the decline on the moral shortcomings of "other" Americans--blacks, feminists, gays, immigrants, union members --to court a fearful white working and middle class base with ever more bitter "us" vs. "them" politics. Liberals tried but mostly failed to make the case that we're all in this together. In All for None and None for All, MSNBC political analyst and popular Salon columnist Joan Walsh traces this deeply disturbing dynamic as it has played out over the last forty years, dividing the country, poisoning its politics, jeopardizing its future--and splitting her working class Irish Catholic family as well.

          • Connects the dots of American decline through trends that began in the 1970s and continue today--including the demise of unions, the stagnation of middle class wages, the extension of the right's "Southern Strategy" throughout the country, the victory of Reagan Republicanism, the widening partisan divide, the increase in income inequality, and the drop in economic mobility.
          • Shows how liberals unwittingly collaborated in the "us" vs. "them" narrative and failed to develop an inspiring, persuasive vision of a more fair, united America
          • Explores how the GOP's renewed culture war--one which could conceivably make Rick Santorum president, and produced radical changes in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, and Virginia--now scapegoats even segments of its base, as it blames the troubles of working class whites on their own moral failings rather than an unfair economy

As the United States becomes a "majority-minority" culture, while the GOP doubles down on racial and cultural appeals to rev up its demographically threatened white base in 2012, Walsh talks about race in honest, unflinching, unfamiliar terms, acknowledging not just Republican but Democratic Party political mistakes--and her own. This book will be essential reading as the country struggles through political polarization and racial change to invent the next America in the years to come.

Goes to show the incredible, unprecedented, and unbelievable amount of hatred for a POTUS of our time; the first African American president. Shame to those who continue with the vile hatred for a true American patroit.

Her book is next on my list. I am currently reading "The New New Deal" by Michael Grunwald, I just started reading Rachel Maddow's "Drift", which I have been trying to take the time to read for the last two months! I also just got "The Betrayal of the Middle Class in America" by James Barlett and oh, I forget the co-author's name. I may even be off on the title! This is what happens when I try to read three books at the same time! Thanks for the excerpt!

I think Joe doesn't have to do anything except be himself gaffes and all because he'll be totally honest about his own personal thoughts and people need to know that honesty is still the best policy. So I would say Mr. Biden you know what to do and when to call bull#hit when you hear Mr. Ryan trying to lie straight threw his teeth and unlike the President you won't have to be worried about your image and being Presidential againist him.
