Updated 3:11 p.m. - President Barack Obama's campaign manager cautioned Thursday that the election is "far from over," just as polls show GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney gaining on Obama.
"This thing is far from over," campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call, "and every single day, across the battleground states, voters are voting and we are able to affect that vote every single day."
Messina was speaking on a call to boast of their campaign's efforts to register voters in key swing states, and, beyond that, encourage early voting where it's allowed.
There are signs that this strategy has paid dividends, too. Almost 1-in-5 respondents in the Thursday NBC News-Wall Street Journal-Marist poll of Ohio said they had voted early; 63 percent of those who had already cast ballots said they had voted for Obama.
At the same time, though, Romney has eaten into Obama's lead in swing states like Ohio, Virginia and Florida on the strength of his debate performance last week against the president. The tightening polls have prompted Democratic nervousness that Romney stands a better-than-expected chance at winning the election.
Messina sent out a clarion call to supporters to warn against complacency.
"The most important think I learned when I was running track was to finish strong," he said. "At the end of a race, you sprint and lean into the tape, you don't let up. And quite simply, we're not going to let up until Election Night when we win this thing. And the ground game we've built up over the past few years will help us drive hard right through that finish line."
Romney political director Rich Beeson said in response: “Since the debate, we’ve seen a 63 percent increase in volunteer hours, a growing enthusiasm gap that continues to favor Governor Romney, a strengthening of our already strong ground game, and we’re seeing the effects of this in polling numbers across the battleground states. What the Obama campaign didn’t tell you is that we are leading or even with them in early vote in key states across the country – FL, NC, CO, NV, and NH. Our early vote numbers are outperforming voter registration in battleground states, demonstrating the strength of our ground game and the excitement for the Romney/Ryan ticket. Not only are we keeping pace with the vaunted Obama machine, but we believe our ground game will put us over the finish line on Election Day.”

For the past two years, House Republicans have continued to deprioritize the security forces protecting State Department personnel around the world. In fiscal year 2011, lawmakers shaved $128 million off of the administration's request for embassy security funding. House Republicans drained off even more funds in fiscal year 2012 -- cutting back on the department's request by $331 million.
Then, when something goes wrong, Republicans are quick on the draw to point their finger at the Obama administration. This newfound concern for security makes sense only for one reason: It's the election season.

Windy, how do you explain the fact that the State Department had money for Chevy Volts for the Austrian Embassy, but no money for additional security for Libya? Also your statement conflicts with what Charlene Lamb testified to yesterday under oath when she was asked if it was a matter of not having enough money to pay for additional security and she said very sheepishly "NO".
You are aiding and abetting the lies coming out of the White House regarding the deaths of Chris Stevens and three others by continuing to spread untruths.
They couldn't beef up security, but they did buy Chevy Volts for the embassy in Vienna; and built refueling stations to boot. Ouch! Thats all you need to know about this president.

Look at FactCheck.org sometime and you'll see how many lies are being told by both campaigns. What's destroying America, if anything is, is the type of polarization where one side thinks it has possession of the truth. Whoever wins this election, I hope that they will find a way to return to the practice of compromise, which is the art of politics.

Sorry you're disappointed that Obama wasn't the Great Uniter. Me too. He really thought he could be, but that's not how they play the game in DC. All the Republicans had to do was just say "no" to everything. A simple strategy but, by God, it worked! Pretty soon people were questioning where he was born, and if he really was a Muslim, and all our smart Republicans decided that--hey, why stop a good thing? So, if you love the Tea Party, you should be very happy now. Of course, Romney really thinks the teabaggers are idiots, but he has to talk the talk. 1. Amendment #1 - Freedom of Religion. However, that does not mean anyone has the right to push religion into our secular government, or tell me what I have to believe, that includes god. He is not mentioned anywhere in the US Consitution.

3. Honesty - Agree, but that should apply to everyone yes?

I have one question that should help to clear things up.
In the 2008 democratic primary election, would you have voted for Obama if he announced that if elected President he would hire Bush's economic adviser and stay the Bush economic course of bailouts, stimulus and tax cuts to the rich.
If in your soul, the answer is no, then why are you supporting him now? You wanted change from the same old same old crap that you blamed Bush for. Obama is claiming he wants this country to stay the same Bush economic course that you blame Bush for destorying this country's economy with.
If you want four more year of Bush's economic policies, most certainly reelect Obama, but be aware that the Obama administration is projecting that when Obama leave office after four more years; the national debt will be around $23 trillion.
Very simple answer to your question. Obama inherited a bad situation from Bush and kept the economy from completely melting down. He wanted to extend Bush's temporary tax cuts, because it was a bad time to reinstate taxes, but not to the rich. The Republicans wanted all tax cuts extended so that's what got passed in Congress. The best we could do. So your characterization of Obama's economic policy is simplistic, which means that you should run for office because what you say sounds good although it's meaningless.

When Obama was touting how the economy was recovering in 2010 and extended the Bush tax cuts to the rich rather than let them expire or implement his tax reform that would have had the rich paying higher taxes and generating revenues so the government could pay down its debt, it was because Obama was protecting our government from going so far in debt that it almost shut down twice in fourteen months.

I hate to inform you that the democrats controlled congress in 2010 when Obama pushed for and got the Bush tax cuts to the Rich extened rather then implement his tax reform . They could have crafter the tax reform any way they wanted it and pass it just like they passed everything Obama wanted because it used procedural rules to prevent the republicans from filibustering what they wanted to pass like Obamacare.
