VAN METER, Iowa -- Mitt Romney said Tuesday that he had actually met one of the Navy SEALs to have been killed in the Sept. 11 attacks on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

A day after delivering a major foreign policy speech -- which included sharp criticism of President Barack Obama's response to the terrorist attack -- Romney acknowledged having met the SEAL, Glen Doherty, during a past holiday party.
"This is kind of a strange story so bear with me here," Romney told an audience on a farm outside of Des Moines. He went on to say that he and his wife, Ann Romney, had been invited to a neighborhood Christmas party a few years ago, but they inadvertently went to the wrong party.
"We were a little embarrassed, but they treated us well nonetheless. And I got to meet some really interesting people," Romney continued.
One of them, Romney said, was a former Navy SEAL from Romney's home state of Massachusetts.
"He told me that he keeps going back to the Middle East," Romney recalled.
"He cares very deeply about the people there. He served in the military there, went back from time to time to offer security services and so forth to people there. You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALS killed in Benghazi on September 11th."
The events in Benghazi have become a charged issue in the campaign, as Obama defends himself against charges that the consulate was poorly protected.
The attack resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, the first ambassador killed in the line duty in three decades. Three other Americans were killed, including two former U.S. Navy SEALs working as security contractors.
The Romney campaign later confirmed to reporters that the man Romney met at that party in La Jolla, CA, several years ago was Doherty, of Winchester, Mass.
A neighbor of Romney's reached out to the candidate last week to notify Romney of the coincidence. Doherty's sister said the campaign had notified her family that Romney would speak about the late SEAL, and the family set up a foundation in his honor in anticipation of the mention.

A bit of a stretch to link this man's unfortunate death with the Romney's not being able to properly navigate themselves to a neighborhood Christmas Party. Feisty's comment referred to the Romney's inability to find a home in their local neighborhood.
Furthermore, Ben, you have no shame for linking this man's death to State Dept. incompetence. The e-mails that cite security concerns are about DC-3 allocation for evacuation purposes from the airport in Benghazi.
These man's death had nothing to do with DC-3 issue.

I don't understand this question. Were you looking for a particular "single word"? The President has spoken about Ambassador Stevens any number of times, including this tribute in his speech to the United Nations:

I will not comment on the authenticity of the claim, but it is honorable that Romney gave his respects in this way to the fallen soldier. I don't doubt the possibility of a strange 6 degrees of separation meeting. However, IMO, I would think it would have been more honest and compelling if Mitt brought the meeting up himself without being reminded about the encounter by a neighbor.
That said it seems that Mitt may be trying to use this brave guy's story to move some heart strings. If Mitt really cherishes life and doesn't want to repeat sensless deaths like the soldier's, maybe he should tone down his rabid interventionism. If Romney wins, God forbid, I shudder to think what foreign entanglements or wars that his words or actions would cause.
(Before everyone starts saying that I am a kool ade drinker for EVERY Obama policy, I was against the Libya intervention. Would have much rather Obama said this again - "I'm not against every war/military action just the dumb ones.)
On the grander scheme, the loss of a life or a terrorist attack should not be turned into a partisan issue. Sometimes I shake my head after reading the guys on the other side. It is a shame that they have such hate for liberals in the general population and those that are elected. I suppose that is why their elected compatriots in the GOP feel free to act the way they do. 1) A 14-year old boy who was in the hospital and wanted Mitt to draft his will.
2) A Quadriplegic who died 3-days after meeting with Mitt
3) A Navy SEAL who died at the Libyan Consulate.
Either this means that Mitt Romney has the Kiss of Death...
Or, all of his stories are works of FICTION that cannot be corroborated.

Let's just look at the last two large engagements for our military: Iraq and Afghanistan. C'mon, 10 years to subdue two countries smaller than some US states? WWI lasted 4 years and WWII lasted 6 years. These were wars fought on a global scale.

Going back to the original story, it's an interesting coincidence and nothing else.
Romney doesn't want to, but he has to use the Libya attack as a wedge issue. A certain segment of the US population wants to see the US put boot to @ss whenever something like the Libya attack happens, so Obama's thoughtful response can be used to make him look weak.
As an aside, I'll probably vote for Romney, but I'm hugely impressed with the way Obama and Secretary Clinton have handled the Middle East. We run the show, and as such, sometimes we have to be the bigger country and act the adult.
I repeat, we run the middle east, with the exception of one very lonely Iran. They riot in the streets against us because they have no jobs, and we're just the convenient boogeyman. I'm not a big conspiracy theorist but I think that story should be investigated before its believed. Basically he could be lying about it. Its convenient that in a campaign where the Republicans are trying to attack the President on the tragedy in Libya it comes out that Romney met one of the Seals killed there.I'd have to see proof on that. Here is how I see Romney. I don't think he's an "evil" man. But I believe he is a man of his class. I see stories about him helping some people.But in reading the stories they seem to be people that he knows on a personal level or people that he met through his Church,fellow Mormons. This election is about who is better for the American people,all our people.We've gone through the worse financial collapse since the great depression. Brought on by the policies of our last Republican administration. We still haven't recovered all the way from it as everyone knows. So what type of President can help our people during this time of crisis and to recover from it. Do we want a President whose priorities are helping all our people in their time of need. That said our bigger problem is congress -- both sides that will not work a moderate middle ground compromise to do what is overall good for the country versus the extreme special interest
I still wish to see a detailed account of the benghazi mess with a clear throughout investigation without all the sideline quarterbacks. There is a big difference between a embassy (tripoli) and a consulate house in benghazi.

Another great program was and is Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.
Both of these programs were funded as part of a grant from the Dept. of Education in 1969. If you want to see a great speech on what PBS means for children, read Mr. Rogers Senate testimony in 1969.
Note, in 1969, the Senate gave PBS $20million. Now, over 40 years later, the Republican party is squabbling to eliminate the funding while at the same time increase tax cuts for the wealthy AND increase defense department funding.

As a Dem myself I'll say let Mr. Romney have his human moment!!! That's all it is because as much as the Republicans are dancing around it what the dems are saying is that Mr. Romney's image over the first 11 months of his campaign has been that he has no heart and through his own words doesn't care about 47% of the American public or the poor so here's another way of showing his deep compassion for us plain old citizens of the United States especially those who died on the President's watch. It's called political expendientancy and he's shown in the debates and now he's a very very good skill set at using it.

Yes, he's rich..isn't that what the American Dream is all about? He took no salary for 4 years as Gov., took no salary for 3 years at the Olympics, gave $1million to the same Olympics, gives millions to charity every year, stayed at the bedside of several dying members of his church, enacted universal health care in his state (because it is a state issue), etc. You may be surprised if you actually read and watched something other than msnbc.

No, Sal_C2006, that's not what the American Dream is all about. It isn't about just wealth, it's the ability for everyone in the country to have the opportunity to succeed whether because of opportunity or because of hard work, regardless of social class or family. Success isn't just having deep pockets.

But then his people rebel and they look like they're serious. So we back his people, arm them, and then Ghaddafi is killed in a drainage tunnel leading under a road.
People in the Middle East have every right to hate us. We have never behaved very honorably in the Middle East. We support hateful dictators. We look the other way while these countries violate their own citizens basic human rights. We talk real big at home, but show a complete lack of morals and ethics in the Middle East. It should come as no surprise that Middle Easterners have a very distinct dislike for Americans.
How would you like foreigners coming into your home town, displacing your mayor with their own person, and then using remote control drones to eradicate anyone who opposes them? Would you like it?

While Romney was in private school torturing his classmates, I was in high school at the same time writing papers about how important the value of personal integrity was to me. Those of you who comment here, I have a question for you----why on earth would you want to vote for someone with a complete lack of a moral and ethical core? Is that who you are? Ask yourself if you, too, have lied your way through life? Are you willing to throw your parents and grandparents under the bus by taking away Medicare and destroying Social Security, and gutting Veterans benefits? Have any of you or any of your family and friends been in the Armed Forces? May I remind you that Romney would do if he's president is start a couple of wars---and guess who's going to be fighting those wars? Wake up! You and I are the uninvited 47%. Quit buying into the notion that people on food stamps and unemployment are the cause of all of our economic problems----that's Fox@!$%#! The 1% is only friends with the 1%, Romneyworld looks down it's nose at people like me and you. If you or I showed up at one of those $50,000 a plate and said you thought you would come and support the candidate but you didn't have the $50K, you'd be arrested. In Romneyworld we're the help. The Right wants you sick, ignorant and frightened. How do they do that?
(1) Get rid of any kind of real health care.
(2) Privatize the public schools so that the Koch brothers can make a profit off our education and, at the same time, make sure that only those who can afford it go to the best schools while the rest of us are permanently trapped in the poor schools.
(3) Censor all the media (like north Korea) so we think we have all these enemies that want to destroy us so we'll remain paralized and paranoid.
You must get over your inclination to be racist. Everything is at stake in this election. You are not the 1%. Put your self interests first. You and your family are going to benefit greatly from the affordable health-care, don't forfiet your right to that health care by voting for Romneyworld.

Research some of his charitable work; UNPAID Governor for 4 years; UNPAID SAVING the Olympics for 3 years; $1 million donation to Olympics; Donated his entire inheritance from his father; 3 years missionary work; 10 years UNPAID leader of this church; donates millions each year to his church and to charities and individuals. If that is someone with no morals, I wish everyone else the same level of morality. And PLEASE stop talking about the 1% and their 50k plate dinners....do you think George Clooney is poor?
