Ryan gets in fall spirit before VP debate

KENOSHA, Wis. – Four days before the vice presidential debate -- arguably one of the most important political moments of his life so far – Paul Ryan spent the day with his family preparing for Halloween.

Ryan, his wife Janna and their three children, Liza, Charlie and Sam, stopped at Apple Holler, a family farm in Sturtevant, Wis., to pick pumpkins – a Ryan family tradition.

The seven-term Wisconsin congressman noted that his family enjoys carving their pumpkins -- but likely wouldn’t do that until next week -- and said they "love" to scoop out the seeds and toast them.

After Ryan hauled a wagon nearly 50 yards to the pumpkin patch, the family carefully selected four of the largest pumpkins they could find. The winning pumpkins weighed in at 49 pounds, 37 pounds, 35 pounds, and 34 pounds.

The presidential race heated up as Mitt Romney continued his assault of President Obama's record in Florida, saying that a 7.8 percent unemployment rate is nothing to celebrate. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

Two weeks ago in New London, N.H., Vice President Joe Biden visited a pumpkin patch where he bought a 36.75-pound pumpkin.

Asked about the upcoming Oct. 11th debate with the vice president, Ryan maintained a jovial spirit.

"What debate?" he joked. "Oh, yeah – I'd better get ready for that."

Asked how his debate prep was going – he did just spend four days preparing in Virginia -- Ryan laughed: "You know I'd better get started. You just reminded me. No, it’s going well."

After the trip to the local farm, Ryan stopped at Tenuta's Deli here -- his favorite shop to buy spices for venison sausage. He wrapped up the long Sunday -- which he typically takes off to spend in Janesville with his family – speaking at the Annual Columbus Day Dinner hosted by the Italian American Society of Kenosha. He has missed the event only once during his time as a congressman.

"In 14 years – we were just reciting this – I missed this dinner once and it was because of our final Lamaze class in 2001. And my boss made me go to Lamaze," Ryan said at the dinner, referring to his wife.

Monday, the VP nominee will hold two events in Ohio and Michigan, which will likely be the last times Ryan will appear in public before the only vice presidential debate of the campaign cycle.

I used to be a Democratic Senatorial District Delegate and this trickle up poverty isn't what I signed on for. Hillary would have done a much better job getting the US back on it's feet and back to work. Obama is no Clinton. What Bill Clinton had Barack Obama couldn't even borrow to get. Clinton had true bi-partisanship, Obama couldn't bribe a vote from legislators, even in the Democratic Senate! We don't need another 4 years of this BS. We don't need a do-over president, we need a do-er. Obama couldn't make a profit in a lemonade stand, he'd give away all the product and earnings and have too much overhead. I want a real businessman to turn our suffering economy into a surplus economy. I want someone who has proven success, and can demonstrate it in his own life. I want the same opportunities for my kids that my folks had for me, I want my kid to be able to find work when he graduates in four years. That's not going to happen under Obama. Anyone who says it will is full of it, just look at his record. Are college graduates able to find work? Hell no. Obama's gotta go.

The Republicans didn't care about compromise, all they wanted was a one term Obama, even at the cost of fixing the country...

I'm amazed how people don't remember how bad it was in 2008-2009.

Banks, Financial companies, housing ,auto industry. stock market in free fall...

Still in Iraq with no exit for Afghanistan...

      Bin Ladin still kicking...

Auto LOAN (not a bailout) worked to perfection, money being paid back. Auto industry flying high, hundreds of thousands of jobs saved.

Stock Market flying...my 401k more than doubled under Obama.

      Housing market heading upward...

      Unemployment heading downward...

Regulations passed to prevent another Wall Street screwing...Mitt wants it to go bye-bye.

      Iraq war over...

      Out of Afghan very soon...

      Bin Ladin dead...

Drones killing terrorists on a regular basis...

Was it expensive, yes....but it prevented a total collapse...a deep depression.

And we are on our way back...no one could of turned it around completely in less than 4 years...no one...

      Obama deserves 4 more years...

Chad - don't be bitter - jealousy is not pretty. The so called 1% pay more in total taxes than the lowest 55% combined - so seems like they're carrying your arse and the 47% to boot. I can offer you a landscaping job next summer - even provide free contraceptives and maybe a phone too while I count my winnings for predicting B. Hussein O's arse is securely back in Chicagoland come January. He best stay out of shootem up South Chicago cause he's certainly not quick on his feet and I don't see Oprah driving her Volvo into that hood to rescue him.

Left - you got that right - our top priority is to get rid of Barry and try and wash the country of all remaining residue - No COMPROMISE

The Auto Industry bail out was a terrible deal for taxpayers and stockholders. It's a glaring example of B HO's unconstitutional overreach - he took from the taxpayers and stockholders and gave to his friendly dem backing union buddies. He's not touting the $50 Billion they are writing off that will never be paid back - the stockholders were wiped out. Pure Capitalism is what made this country great - it's what gave us the financial wherewithal to fight the many noble wars we fought and the cash to soothe the many tragedies endured by our fellow mankind around the world. A proper bankruptcy proceeding is what should have happened with GM - they'd still be here - the Union pay would be a litte less - but you and I wouldn't be supplementing the Union wages and GM would not be saddled with what will once again be uncompetitive wages and benefits. The Unions won in plugging a hole - temporarily - but to quote Rev Wright - their chickens will come home to roost.
