Romney gets personal at Florida rally

The presidential race heated up as Mitt Romney continued his assault of President Obama's record in Florida, saying that a 7.8 percent unemployment rate is nothing to celebrate. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Mitt Romney concluded a three-day Florida campaign swing with one of his largest crowds of the campaign season packing a town square to hear his retooled stump speech, which now highlights the sometimes-rigid candidate's personal side.

"Now I’m optimistic – I want you to know that great days are ahead," Romney said Sunday before more than 10,000 supporters. "I know something about great human beings in this country. It’s that that gives me the confidence that our future will be so bright, because I’ve seen how Americans respond to challenge – and even to tragedy."

Romney then repeated three tales of courage in the face of death and tragedy that he debuted days ago in this critical battleground state.

The stories, told in succession, have quickly become a staple of Romney's stump speech and are designed to highlight the candidate's personal compassion.

One story even makes note of Romney's time as a pastor of a Massachusetts ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – a period once all but off limits for Romney, who rarely spoke of his Mormon religion in the early months of the campaign.

“I was serving as a pastor in my congregation at church and the – young fellow in our ward named David Oparowski, his parents from Medford, Massachusetts – his dad a firefighter, his mom a stay at home mom. They raised their two sons. But at age 14, David contracted leukemia and became very, very ill," Romney said. "It was clear that there was no good conclusion to this leukemia."

Romney ends the story of David's untimely death with a recitation of the phrase: "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose," borrowed from the NBC’s high school football drama, "Friday Night Lights." That phrase, with the "can't lose" removed, also appeared in a campaign fundraising email from Ann Romney on Sunday.

The former Massachusetts governor also hit all five points of his economic plan. He also noted that his plan would protect Medicare for current seniors and reform it for the future.

Given the heated battle for the senior vote here in Florida, the Obama campaign quickly fired back on Medicare reform.

"Mitt Romney would turn Medicare into a voucher program and increase costs for retirees by more than $6,000,” Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith said in a statement. “The truth hurts – especially for the middle class families who would suffer under Romney’s policies.”

THIS CLOWN, thinks of this election as some type of corporate takeover; where he's fighting for the position of CEO, chairman of the board, and chiief operating officer. In this case the title is President of The United States and Commander in Chief of Armed Forces. As a businessman Mitt has been sucessful and congradulations to him. As a man of Principle, he is lacking. He is only a politican/businessman with a new/old line "you can trust me this time". Don't beleive what I said to those wealthy people at that fundraiser, believe what I'm telling you now(besides......they didn't boo me). The Profit is the prestigue of the title of President, The LOSS is America.......3rd WORLD CLASSING COMES TO AMERICA.

Hopefully this will stir up the base. Every democrat in America needs to vote. They need to be registered have an appropriate id, shut their eyes when they go to the poll until they vote so they won't be disuaded by anything and remember if they don't vote it is voting for Romney which they clearly do not want. If you know a Democrat make sure they plan to vote. None of this he should do more for us crap. If the other guy gets in that won't even be a consideration. And you may not have another chance for a while tomake it right.

I voted for O last time, but I would rather go with the slick rich white dude than 4 more years of this. BTW - we also need a better foreign policy.

"Tales of Courage"? I just lost seven people in the last ten years. Including both my parents & my younger brother. And I know I'm not alone on this. He expects us to think he is the only one who has faced these odds? What a turd. I also do not believe in religion-it is man made. I am a veteran of the Vietnam era and know Romney is not the solution. He is laying down the ground work for the following: starting another war in the middle east, keep the Bush era tax cuts and blame anyone for his actions. Paul Ryan is a seventh grader bully. Kids stuff. WE are more intelligent, mature, responsible, compassionate adults than they give us credit for. Pinheads.

this severe conservative is playing possum of late. he is morphing himself into a liberal right before our eyes (no tax cut for thr rich, a healthcare plan, no change to social programs). but if your a middleclass person make no mistake, this is a flip flop liar and when (if) he gets elected say goodbye to social security, medicare, medicade, food stamps, peace, unemployment compensation, and any program that supports the middleclass and makes them somewhat independent of the greedy rich. make no mistake about it.

Actually I don't think THE REPUBLICANS WILL ALLOW him to do that. Right now they are so used to hearing scare tactics they think this is still one. WHEN THEY FIND OUT it is for real there will be a big protest among HIS BASE. Anyway I don't think we have to worry. REmember all things work for good and Romney may have thought he scored a big one on the first debate but there is God in heaven and2 more debates left. Romneys worse enemy is himself and his mouth. Rattle on Romney! And show em what you are made of! So they will believe it themselves. And people beware you can't change your vote after you make it. And republicans you can't vote again although some are trying to make it possible for you. We all have to remember whethere you are Christian or not - God is watching and hopefully still watching out for America. Obama 2012 for every reason! He knows what they are doing.

Actually don't you think they should go? Seriously. He needs a good booing like he got in Florida. Come on guys don't give up. Boo. and then vote. Someone needs to bring up front and center that he uses russian atheist philosophies to run his life. You can't do it by staying home. Ask him and make him tell everyone. He may lie but then someone can just play the truth and the lie together. To some although they are cafeteria Christians it still matters!

I don't get it. Anyone who earns under $250,000/yr wants Romney will suffer so he and anyone like him can have more. They talk about "death panels". If medicare is repealed, many will die. They will be asking for death. Or if they live, they will be homeless because the medical bills will loose their homes. Their children will have no schools. The banks will charge interest like long sharks. We will be even more poor than now. There is a 275% difference between people like Romney and us. It will get worse. We went through this with Bush and look what happened. Romney is a silver spooned spoiled brat. So is Ryan. They are both the same is attitude, thought, and action. You can see it. They care only for themselves. And the tea party follow like sheep. It don't make sense. I thought people were smarter than this. I guess not.

When you are in a room and people bring up hatred against Obama, some are very quiet. That might mean there are many with a brain in a room who are choosing not to let it override their mouth at that time. And they may be voting Obama. Hopefully. They don't want to be lambasted by the hatemongers in the room. I cannot believe that any Christian on the planet would vote for Ryan due to one thing and that is his 25 yr hero worship of Ayn Rand. A russian atheist. Aint no way! If so that tells who is leading the republican party and it sure aint Christ but the other one mentioned in theBible. Thats my story and Im sticking to it. They are fooling lots. If republicans vote for an atheist follower that tells me they are not the Christian team in this election. Period!! Christianity has just plain left their party. And most important of all is that God knows it and will act accordingly.

Wow, simple minded libbies really hate on the Mitt. Why so much love for the worst President ever? Is it because they share his anti-American views, enjoy his literary stylings about silly 'ol whitey (always hip), his anti-Christian rhetoric, his naive and misguided view of the world? I also love the simple minded "He rich, he bad man, he no like lazy crackheads" talk. I always argued that logic should be taught to all high school freshmen to diminish the percentage of brain numbed liberals.

When I watched Fox News they got me to hate people like Rev Sharpton too which your name reveals you do too. I don't know what they gain from spreading hate because that is hardly a Christian virtue which they seem to have thrown out the window long ago. HIs antiChristian rhetoric? Like when he said that how you treat people is paramount to being a Christian?? How many republicans have read that??? Well gee it is there in the Bible IF they would just read it and not assume. Like a lot of other trashy things they say are FORBIDDEN BY CHRISTIANS. I can hardly wait when after election night with all their shennanigans over they are trying to figure out how Obama won. They will say well he stole the election somehow. No they need to realize that that doesn't work no matter how hard they try. One reason is that GOD IS WATCHING EVERY MOVE! And Romney and Ryan can lie and etch a sketch to every single republican on the plaent that still admits they are republican and it won't matter because God hates a lot of stuff they are doing and if he loves America and has great plans for it there aint no way those two will go near the White House. Watch and see! God hates lying, creating disharmony and discord among the brethren and he hates cheating with a passion. And the Bible and God says if you lie, Obama will reap double. Now he did reap the 7.8% which again enfuriated the radicals buts he aint done yet. Is he? YOu might want to pray again but try praying for truth and honesty for a change. You willmay better results next time. Mr etch a sketch and Ryan, There is a God!

Now Mitt wants to arm the Syrian opposition.

                        What a genius!

Great tales of courage and human beings in America? I have a little problem with pastor issue. What pastor does anyone anywhere know that has a problem with insulting people and not being able to connect with them. It would be like having an ice king come and counsel you and tell you get a job!!!! Lies have to sound true Mitt. And I don't believe a word of your new etch a sketch strategy. I just hope you drop the etch a sketch before the next debate because people are now watching and will notice. It seems like the Dems are doing best while you are talking, making things up and defeating yourself. Just think you have only 3 4 5 weeks left. Thats enough. Who know what other morsels we will find hiding where you have been running your mouth revealing more of the REAL MITT Willard or whoever. Obama 2012 because of every reason!

It is when it was over 12 percent when Obama started, and would be higher yet under Romney.

Yes, we have a long ways to go, but we are heading in the right direction. Slamming the brakes and putting it in reverse is not going to make things better.

The Romney/Ryan plan has been tried before but under a different name its called a PYRAMID SCHEME. In a pyramid scheme you make a bunch of promises to broaden the bottom or the base as Romney/Ryan call it and then just when the people at the bottom think there going to see some return on there investment the people at the very top take off with all the profits leaving the people at the bottom with nothing.

Take a moment and think about it.

"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose," This quote isn't even Romney's idea. He takes it from a t.v. program. Then he speaks about a boy so passionately and don't even mention his parents names? I take anything Willard says with caution. If you look up the boys name all the links are from GOP, coincident, I think not! If the story is true I wish his unnamed parents my sypmathy.
