Subscribe to RSSThe presidential race heated up as Mitt Romney continued his assault of President Obama's record in Florida, saying that a 7.8 percent unemployment rate is nothing to celebrate. NBC's Ron Mott reports.
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Mitt Romney concluded a three-day Florida campaign swing with one of his largest crowds of the campaign season packing a town square to hear his retooled stump speech, which now highlights the sometimes-rigid candidate's personal side.
"Now I’m optimistic – I want you to know that great days are ahead," Romney said Sunday before more than 10,000 supporters. "I know something about great human beings in this country. It’s that that gives me the confidence that our future will be so bright, because I’ve seen how Americans respond to challenge – and even to tragedy."
Romney then repeated three tales of courage in the face of death and tragedy that he debuted days ago in this critical battleground state.
The stories, told in succession, have quickly become a staple of Romney's stump speech and are designed to highlight the candidate's personal compassion.
One story even makes note of Romney's time as a pastor of a Massachusetts ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – a period once all but off limits for Romney, who rarely spoke of his Mormon religion in the early months of the campaign.
“I was serving as a pastor in my congregation at church and the – young fellow in our ward named David Oparowski, his parents from Medford, Massachusetts – his dad a firefighter, his mom a stay at home mom. They raised their two sons. But at age 14, David contracted leukemia and became very, very ill," Romney said. "It was clear that there was no good conclusion to this leukemia."
Romney ends the story of David's untimely death with a recitation of the phrase: "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose," borrowed from the NBC’s high school football drama, "Friday Night Lights." That phrase, with the "can't lose" removed, also appeared in a campaign fundraising email from Ann Romney on Sunday.
The former Massachusetts governor also hit all five points of his economic plan. He also noted that his plan would protect Medicare for current seniors and reform it for the future.
Given the heated battle for the senior vote here in Florida, the Obama campaign quickly fired back on Medicare reform.
"Mitt Romney would turn Medicare into a voucher program and increase costs for retirees by more than $6,000,” Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith said in a statement. “The truth hurts – especially for the middle class families who would suffer under Romney’s policies.”

What a coincidence! That was during the Bush administration and at that time the unemployment rate was 4.9%. In January 2006, the rate was 4.8. January 2007 the rate was 4.7. January 2008 the rate was 4.5.
It was during the last two or three quarters of Bush's term that he handed the reins to Hank Paulsen (democrat Fed head) who began screaming that the sky was falling because of the democrat sweethearts Fannie and Freddie. The housing bust was on its way.
Remember that Obama had been in the Senate since 2005. The bust started the last few quarters of Bush's term in 2008. Obama, as a Senator should have been involved in policy for three years.
So when Obama states that he had no idea how bad the economy was when he became president, he is either lying or was so incompetent as a US Senator that he should never have been elected President.
And as you can see by the unemployment rates, the Bush years were economically excellent compared to Obama’s best rate at 7.8%.

Then on 9/12/01 the repub Neocons already were clamoring to fulfill their plan expressed in their think tank, the Project for the New American Century, in the late 1990s and also pushed through the repub congress in a bill signed by Clinton while the repubs were impeaching him to do regime change in all the oil countries in the Mideast that were not friendly with the US, starting with Iraq, whenever they could get the American public's backing for it, so the repub-led US government started the Iraq war a little over a year after 911, using the American public's support of the "War on Terror" to start the Iraq war under false pretenses generated by the repubs.

How about responding to something of substance? For example, can you explain where in the US Constitution the POTUS is granted the power:
- to ignore enforcement of laws that he disagrees with (DOMA, War Powers Act, voter intimidation, etc.)
- to exempt some groups (primarily supporters and friends) from US laws while all of the rest of us still have to abide by them (ACA exemptions, children of illegal aliens not being subject to deportation, etc.)
- to unilaterally attempt to re-write existing US laws via Executive Order and departmental edict (Welfare reform)
- to tell American companies that they should break the law and that the goverment will pay to defend them if anyone brings a suit agianst them (WARN Act)
- to deprive the rightful owners of General Motors of their property and violate practically every US bankruptcy law in order to transfer GM ownership to the UAW

He's violating the separation of powers (only the legislative branch gets to write the laws), the 14th Amendment (equal protection under the law) and his oath of office. How about Medicare D--the totally republican and totally unfunded plan that currently adds about $1 trillion to the US federal deficit in 10 years--close to what Obamacare will add, but Obamacare (although not perfect and with serious flaws that must get fixed, such as the mandate and how it hurts private business) at least addresses a major driver of the inflation of the US healthcare--the many millions of uninsured healthcare consumers whose unpaid bills are passed on to paying consumers including those on Medicare. US healthcare is currently by far the most expensive healthcare in the world and a major cause of the ever increasing federal deficit through Medicare, currently the social program that adds the most to the federal deficit. How about the unnecessary republican-driven Iraq war that was started under false pretenses and cost $1 trillion, and increased military spending by repubs and now promised again under Romney/Ryan.
Everyone knows Democrats spend too much, but they have also put forth many very noble programs that have greatly benefited and strengthened our country as a whole, financially and in all ways, such as Social Security, Medicare, food stamps (with the aid of Repub Dole), etc.

You're deluded to think that if he becomes President, he won't try to help ONLY people like whom he was speaking to in that fundraiser. Do you also believe in the tooth fairy? Truth be told, I make enough money to pay federal income taxes and still find those comments highly offensive to hard working people. A lot of them are my friends and they are very very hard working. They're not interested in becoming CEO's, businessmen or even rich. All they want is a system that's fair and a country that won't allow them to go broke because they or some member of their family becomes seriously ill. Is that the kind of America you're proud of? That is all supposed to be revenue-neutral. However, the wave of private dollars that start flowing back into the economy as everyone breathes a sigh of relief that Obama is gone WILL cause growth. And as has ALWAYS happened in such situations the tax revenues will actually increase.
The real issue will be whether those additional revenues are allowedd to be wasted by the Spendaholics in Washington. Unless the spending side of things get reined-in then even Romney would only be pushing on a string.

Nothing to control the social program that adds by far the most to the federal deficit for another 10 years (Medicare) or to start to actually fund in any way the totally repub Medicare D. Ending the ability to pay for healthcare for future seniors by privatizing Medicare, and private insurance will again price seniors out of the market in a US economy where the healthcare industry is the biggest provider of private jobs and seniors, as always, due to age-related diseases and conditions, are the biggest healthcare consumers. Bankrupting nursing homes and a sector of the healthcare industry by defunding Medicaid and not trying to curb the high percentage of uninsured US healthcare consumers who cannot pay for their healthcare after they repeal Obamacare. No tax increases to pay for the recent trillions added to the federal deficit by the recent repub wars. Trillions in tax cuts to the wealthy (those job providers to foreign third-world and communist countries) at a time when the deficit is at a record high.

Everyone should realize that if Republicans repeal "Obamacare" and Romney/Ryan went ahead with the voucher system than about 90% of Medicare eligible folks would be totally BEREFT!
Try going out at age 70 to buy yourself some health insurance with your stinking voucher. So you've got high blood pressure, prostate cancer, osteoporosis or heart disease. Sorry, that's a pre-existing condition which WOULD have been covered under Obamacare, but no longer. We're sorry, but your medications won't be covered, either. And be happy because you didn't have to go before any death panel to arrive at this sorry state.
I think we have to live with a fact about the GOP. The party cannot ever tell people, even their supporters, at least the ones that aren't millionaires, what they will actually do if they have the chance. If they did, they would never elect another Republican to national office. They get away with it in some congressional districts - the ones gerrymandered to the point of idiocy. But, not with most Senate races and definitely not for President.
Consequently the GOP must lie, obfuscate and demonize the opponent to elect a President. We get lies about them wanting to preserve Medicare. They can't tell the truth - they want to eliminate it, they always have. They can't tell the truth about lowering taxes for the wealthy - it's not about creating jobs, it's about taking care of their big donors. They can't tell the truth about global warming - they know it's happening, they don't care because any action to save the planet would hurt profits. They can't tell the truth about spending - they are not against spending, they just want to spend on the military and their corporate sponsors. The can't tell the truth about the size of government - they don't want a small government, they want a government so big it can police every womb.
To elect a President, Republicans have to lie because no one in their right mind would buy what they are actually selling.
And to the comment that their plan would only affect those under 55 (changed,as a "concession"), well, I'm under 55 (just) and after paying into the plan for the past 35 years, I object, and my parents are not that selfish to not object its effect on their children and grandchildren.

Disagreeing with the Obama agenda has NOTHING to do with the color of his skin and everything to do with what the US Constitution says the powers of the POTUS are.
The POTUS cannot refuse to enforce and execute the laws of the United States "in good faith" just because he diagrees with them. See Article 3
The POTUS cannot excuse/exempt his supporters and constituents from US laws while everyone else are not excused/exempted. See the 14th amendment (equal protection under the law)
The POTUS cannot re-write existing laws through Executive Order or Department Memo. Law writing is the job of the Legislative branch, not the Executive.
The POTUS cannot break and ignore US bankruptcy laws just because he wants to steal GM bondholders ownership rights and transfer them to his supporters in the UAW
The POTUS should not encourage businesses to break US law and promise to pay to defend them with US money if anyone brings lawsuits against them for doing so.
There are many problems with America, but the 2 biggest ones are the current POTUS who believes he is above the US Constitution and all the people who blindly support his agenda and simply choose to ignore the unconstitutional methods that he is using to advance it.
