Subscribe to RSSCOUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA -- Defending his boss after what many considered a lackluster performance, Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that President Obama was "presidential" in last night's debate, slamming Mitt Romney for "outsourcing" the $5 trillion price tag the GOP nominee said his proposed tax cuts would avoid.
"I thought the president did well. He was presidential," Biden told reporters outside of a Hy-Vee shopping center in western Iowa. "I think the you just never know what game, what position Gov. Romney's going to come with."
Referencing Romney's claim that he does not support tax cuts with an astronomical price tag, Biden tweaked the GOP nominee for "outsourcing" a key piece of his budget.
"The centerpiece of their economic policy so far has been their tax cut, and last night we found out he doesn't have a $5 trillion tax cut," the vice president said. "I guess he outsourced that to China or something. I don't know if that's offshored."
"Let me repeat what I said, I'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut," Romney said last night. "That's not my plan."
The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates that Romney's tax cuts would cost $4.8 trillion over 10 years, though Romney says that the plan would be paid for by offsets like closing loopholes and limiting deductions.
As for his own October 11 debate -- and perhaps implicitly acknowledging the poor reviews about the president's performance last night -- Biden said that "all debates are tough."
"You can sit there and say, you know, 'I would've done that and I would of done this,'" Biden said, "Well, it is nothing like standing up before 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 million people."
He said he has been studying Rep. Paul Ryan's positions and comparing them to the plans Gov. Mitt Romney has embraced in preparation for the Danville, KY showdown next week.
"I don't want to say anything in the debate that's not completely accurate," Biden said.
Later speaking to about 500 supporters at Council Bluffs' Mid-America Center after his lunch stop, Biden chided Romney for bringing up his "accountant" last night, in a swipe at the former Massachusetts governor's personal wealth.
"I thought last night when he said, I'd like to introduce my accountant, that I'd love to have his accountant!" he said to laughter. "But look, we may not have his accountant, but we understand someone ends up paying for all of this."
The vice president won some unwanted attention from Republicans as well for acknowledging that he and Obama would "raise taxes by a trillion dollars" by allowing tax cuts for top earners to expire.
"You know the phrase they always use. 'Obama and Biden want to raise taxes by a trillion dollars. Guess what? Yes, we do, in one regard," Biden said. "We want to let that trillion-dollar tax cut expire so the middle class doesn't have to bear the burden of all that money going to the super wealthy."
"That's not a tax raise, that's called fairness where I come from."

Bashir got him to admit that Romney’s lies weren’t significant to him, not his responsibility, not part of his assessment. If that was the case why was his closing statement so bad? He was unprepared. There is no other reason. Lake Street was probably full, and beyond that, possibly Langdon Street in front of the Union. We'll see more on the news tonight. I'm told that many students were wearing Elmo regalia.
My colleagues and I watched the speech, and the consensus was that, compared with how the President looked today, it's entirely possible that he wasn't feeling very well last night.
I don't know if it was a set-up or not, but either way, Romney did manage to provide all the clips that will be needed in the next 4 1/2 weeks.

So I've thought of the perfect campaign advertisement. In California in 2010 Gov. Brown ran an ad titled "if you do the same thing over and over again". Video of W. saying taxes will NOT be decreased on the wealthy when running in 2000 exists. Al Sharpton just shared it. We all know what happened next with his tax decrease. He left a hefty deficit that is causing programs for the poor and Big Bird to be axed. Wake the F&*k up and vote everyone and share this with Obama's campaign because that ad was aturning point in California for Governor Brown against Meg Whitman.
I came to the very same conclusion. The same thing was said to have happened in the 1960 debate when Kennedy beat Nixon. Tricky Dick was sweating profusely because he refused makeup and was said to be suffering with fever. The press took it as nervousness and well, the rest is history. Still no excuse for the president's lackluster performance. Romney was there for the taking and even a mediocre attempt would have averted this.
Obama's only problem was that for the first time in his adult life he was somewhat confronted with his many failures.
Witnessing a successful executive in total command of the facts about the problems at hand leaves me totally lost about how anyone with a lick of common sense could support Obama.

Let's face it, it was one of Obama's worst performances. He knows it and will do much better the next time around. Obama should have confronted Romney the way Ted Kennedy did in 1994. He should have challenged Romney to name the deductions he would eliminate. He should have blamed Romney's policies as being the very policies the started the mini-depression of 2008 through 2010. And he should have ridiculed Romney's claim that he Romney would not support a budget busting tax cut. That's what Reagan and W. said when they busted the budget. Romney is glib enough to tell half truths all night long if not challenged. There are many articles that have been written about how the stimulus actually jump started an automobile battery industry in this country that is now a global leader. Yet, Obama couldn't seem to get that out when Romney said, "You don't pick winners and losers. You just pick losers." That was a wicked uppercut - and it went unchallenged. Obama must defend the stimulus and must be able to recite some successes. (There are many.) And on healthcare, Obama should have said that Romney is being disingenuous in skewering Obamacare and acting as if the Mass. program is anything different. He even let Romney get away with claiming credit for the fact that Mass. is number one in education. Mass. has always been in the top two or three states in education. Romney had nothing to do with that, and in fact, Romney is now unpopular in Mass.

Ask anyone who's talked to him at the local gas station or Home Depot or the diner down on Route 202. Ask that kid in the photo.

JK1963 - Please try to keep up. Biden DID run for President in 2008 but was beaten by Obama. Obama, recognizing Joe's foreign policy expertise and his extensive knowledge in Congress chose Biden to be his running mate. How can you possibly not know that?

SeekingSanity - Actually Biden ran for President in 1988 and 2008, and lost both times. In 1988 it came to light that Biden had a history of plagiarizing others, including John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey and Neil Kinnock (Leader of the British Labour Party) which it was later proven that Michael Dukakis' campaign was the one that leaked the plagiarizing to the press.
There was also information that Biden embellished his college records including number of degrees and class standing.

It would have helped if this debate would have had a moderator worth a crap. Sorry, Jim Leher was totally inept and instead of directing the debate got shoved around like a geek on the playground. Still no excuse for the President and i've sent him a scathing letter asking him if he wants to win this election or not. We've got two more head to heads with Willard and if the performance is the same, then we're in for a very close election. If not, then probably no harm done. Most people calling in to talk radio shows said the debate did not change their mind. That's a good thing.

Lehrer lost control of the debate. He managed to assert himself a couple of times, but that was about it.
He actually let the candidates interact. Obama is not used to that. He's used to everyone that needs to talk to him to pass their messages through David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett, pretty much the only people Obama really talks to. Dave and Val "manipulate" the messages so as not offend Obama. He's kind of delicate, as we saw last night from the "deer and the headlights" looks we kept getting from him.

Lehrer facilitated more than moderated the debates. Each candidate had his say and then some. Lehrer's job as a facilitator was to watch the time which he did poorly but it is done. Personally I would like to see Barbara Walters as the moderator. She doesn't take any crap out of anybody.

Jim Lehrer failed to do his job, which was to keep the candidates on task and on point. He let Romney walk all over him when it came to time management, and as such the final segment only got a few minutes. I would loved to have seen both candidates get into more of a discussion of the final question, which I believe was about governing. How would the candidates attempt to deal with Congress, particularly the other side of the aisle? Because of the lack of time management, this question was barely addressed by either candidate. That was ridiculous. In that respect, I'm going to permanently give Jim Lehrer the nickname "Judge Ito" because both were completely ineffective in managing their respective functions.

The fact that Obama got 4 minutes more but spoke less words (as if that means something) could be that Romney was more prepared and spoke more plainly without a lot of hesitation, we all know that without a teleprompter Obama takes more time and is more deliberate before speaking, like he is really unsure and is mulling his reply under his breath before actually speaking.
BTW, the moderator, Lerher, has been the moderator at the first Presidential debate since 1988, so for those blaming the moderator and not the Candidates is just BS.

For Romney make that claim is almost comical because the economy he decries is on pace to do the same thing he thinks he can do.

From that time till July 2010 we lost 8.8 million. The 4.5 million Obama "claims" to have created just barely dented half of what was lost. And you must remember, if the participation rate (that is the number of people working and/or looking for work for you liberal/progressives) was the same today as it was the very day Obama was sworn in, the unemployment rate today would be 10.9%. Obama inherited 7.8%. So, while the 8.1 is looks only three ticks higher it is BS, there is still a long way to go to get back to even close to even at that 7.8.

Despite the fact that Obama looked bumbling and uncertain in comparison with Romney, there were some subtle maneuverings going on that were not readily apparent. Obama did, in fact, rehearse for the debate (with John Kerry playing Romney). Obama planned and laid well-camouflaged verbal traps for Romney. He, no doubt, had rehearsed some indignant little speeches he could use in his rebuttals.
Romney spotted every one of Obama's little traps with ease, brushed past them, and continued to dominate the debate. On that level, Obama appeared like Austin Powers playing chess with Boris Spassky.
We desperately need a President who can match wits with other world leaders and bring the US out ahead. Rather than Obama who can be manipulated so easily by the flattery and bullying of ruthless people much smarter than himself.
