2012: Romney wins debate in snap polls

Some snap polls from last night (via Political Wire): “A CBS News poll found Romney won, 46% to 22%, while a CNN poll found a similar verdict for Romney, 67% to 25%.”

Discuss this post

I'm guessing the problem for the President last night was that he had planned on debating some candidate other than the one that showed up last night. It appears Governor Christie was correct...it is a whole new campaign as of this morning.

Shake the Etch-a-Sketch enough and suddenly the Conservative Mitt Romney that we've seen all year long became Massachusetts Moderate Mitt last night.

Question: Will the Conservative "True Believers" approve?

Da Noid...is in Da-niel about Obama's horrid performance.

Clearly Romney worked hard preparing himself for this debate, while Obama did not.

Da Noid........

You are exactly correct. Now we know what "etch-a-sketch" actually means.

Mitt Romney will be, do, and say anything necessary to get what he wants. Last night, he was a slippery slimy eel. President Obama's mistake was that he assumed Romney has a modicum of integrity. We are all now relieved of that illusion.

We are fighting a ruthlessly sly and deceitful opponent whose only principle is winning. Our gloves must come off immediately.

well mitt was on game an obama not.

mitts offense was agressive but full of it, untruths, that is, and the prez missed a great opportunity.

but one good performance does not erase the truth and the truth is that 47% of the citizens are in deep crap if mitt is elected.

Over a month ago I predicted that Chuck Todd would be saying that Romney won the debate, as per expectations. What I didn't predict was that I would agree.

Obama was definitely not his best last night. But for people who have honestly been following the campaigns, Mitt just lied and lied and lied. Now his people on this post are eating that up - knowing he is a totally dishonest man. What does that say about the people who support him so strongly?

Obama will come back in the 2nd debate and will win in November.

I watched the debate, no doubt Romney came out of it ahead of where he was before he went in.

Now the questions I have: If Romney is NOT going to give tax cuts to the wealthy, why does he want to change the tax code ?

If we are going to keep everything that is in Obamacare (the President has embraced the name) why bother repealing it ?

If we are going to keep all of the regulations we need in Dodd-Frank, why repeal it ?

Wouldn't we just be better off by making adjustments to the laws than going through the wasteful exercise of repealing them ?

Bottom line I got out of the debate is now Romney likes everything in Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, and no tax cuts, except he wants to repeal Obamacare, Dodd-Frank and cut taxes... right ?

no. He only approves of the things in those laws that poll well. He's just agreeing on things that are no brainers in order to make the electorate think he is on their side. Then, once in office, it is right back to the extreme right wing policies that got him the nomination because it is time to pay back all those big donors...

Anyone can have an "off" night - JUST NOT LAST NIGHT!!! I am stunned by the lack-luster performance of our President, and I am praying he can bring his "A" game to debate no. 2- we simply cannot afford a second night like this one. Mr. Romney is a "lyin wonder" with a "Lyin Ryan" running mate and they walk away the winners?? I am just heart sick over this. Everyone take note, we REALLY need to rally our support and get over this devastating event. The survival of our middle-class and the 47% is at stake!!! ...Still in your corner, Mr. President.

      Jo Anne,

I thought Obama started off wobbly, while Romney was confident, but by the end of the debate, their positions seemed reversed. At the end, Romney was a motor-mouth, he seemed off his rocker, over-excited and just not persuasive.

I was listening carefully to the facts presented during the debate (isn't that what we were supposed to be doing?) and Obama was much more persuasvie, to me. As to style: I loved it when the President looked directly into the camera, and addressed the American people.

I just don't agree with these folks who say Romney "won." I can only think it's a difference between men and women, perhaps? I have no confidence in Romney, but maybe men like his jerkiness, I dunno. (My male co-worker doesn't like Romney either, however, but he is a computer software programmer, so maybe his judgment is different from less educated men.)

CO in FL ... I couldn't help myself ... had to respond to your post about the blinking eyes ..

      2. BLINKING. A person who is lying will blink a lot,as blinking seems to correlate to the amount of mental stress we are under. In a normal conversation where a person is attuned to you, he will blink at roughly the same rate as you, often at moments when you pause in your speech. Be wary of someone who is blinking frantically as they speak with you.

Yes, conservatives thought Romney made an articulate defense of conservative principles....calling out the President for his "trickle down' failed Big Government ideas...

Romney scored points stating how the private sector is more efficient than the public sector...and the RomneyCare explanation made sesne, also, stating the difference between a state by state approach, and a top down federal government takeover.

That working is moral and sitting on your butt collecting a gubment check is amoral... or that success is good and that looting via taxes is bad... or that not spending more than you take in is moral and borrowing to continue to squander is reprehensible... or that following the Constitution is lawful, and avoiding it by executive fiat, or by executive order, or by dept regulation is an impeachable offense...

I applaud Governor Romney and the President for keeping this in the tone of Brooks and Shields -- civil, and full of policy. I had hoped Obama would have been more on his game, so that Romney wouldn't win so decisively by default, but there's always next time. I was happy to see the families interact positively at the end of the debate. There were some genuine moments between them. These guys both raised the bar on public discourse. Well done.

            Civility won this debate.

If he is in front a conservative crowd he becomes conservative and changes his beliefs. If he is front of a moderate crowd he becomes moderate and changes his beliefs. So all last night proved was that Romney is a very good liar; not just a flip-flopper. He could have debated himself from where he actually stands on the issues and what he tried to sell the American people last night. If you hadn't been keeping notes from what Romney has said in the past, of course, you would think that he did a great job last night. But the truth is that Romney tried to sell what he thinks he needs to sell to become the President. But, listen to what he said last night and then see how he acts and what he says behind closed doors around people he actually can relate to. Just because you can lie well doesn't mean you are good. It just means you are a good liar. I'm sure the hyenas such as the Koch brothers, Cheney, Adelson and Grover all salivated last night as they saw their paid-for candidate do a good job of telling the lies he needed to tell. They are so anxious to feast upon the average American and harvest all those profits that Romney has been so successful at in his life-time.

Be smart! Don't believe a wolf in sheep's wool just because he's good at saying what he thinks you want to hear.

Jonathan Gruber, economics professor at MIT, was actually the designer of MA’s healthcare plan, not Mitt Romney.

Bigger lie…Actually Senator Kennedy was the muscle behind the MA healthcare plan, not Mitt Romney, and it could not have been achieved without his negotiations and influence.

… it was a government bailout. It was a result of Mitt Romney’s failed healthcare plan.

It was funded by your federal dollars., and is still being funded by your federal dollars, via subsidiaries.

The only reason MA has the healthcare plan that it does, is because MA’s healthcare was in dire straights, under Mitt Romney’s leadership.

                      Wait for it…

… it was paid for with 385 million dollars of federal money.

                      That’s right, your money.

Then they insured absolutely anyone they could find, with Medicare. Why…?

Because the federal dollars would match Medicare. That’s right, your money.

But wait, it gets even better…

Right now, federal Medicaid dollars continue to pay for both children and adults, for up to 300% of the poverty line in MA.

Have you figured it out yet…?

Yes, the entire State of Massachusetts is on FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE…!!!

Just speculating here…I wonder if the entire state of MA knows it falls in that 47% area…?

But this will never work for the rest of the country…

                      Here’s why…

He wants to provide insurance for the rest of the country another way.

He wants to cap the Medicaid dollars at whatever the state received last year, add 1%, and then let us on our own to fend for ourselves. Or in his own words “manage your poor the way you think best”.

You must understand people…that’s a cut to Medicaid to the tune of more than 600 billion dollars. This differs greatly from the generous deal that MA got.

He opposes giving money for healthcare at the federal level, and also refuses to give it at the state level.

That, on top of Romney’s reportable care act (Romney care) pushes Medicaid cuts to well above 1 trillion dollars.

                      Why is this important…?

It means that the rest of the states will not have the generous benefits that Massachusetts had.

This means that he will be “pulling up the ladder” so no other state can achieve healthcare the way MA has.

Under Romney’s plan, there is no way to achieve universal healthcare.

Indeed, if Medicare is cut, even the current healthcare plan in Massachusetts will not survive.

The only reason Massachusetts healthcare plan has continued to survive, is from a generous waiver, first from the Bush administration, and yes, wait for it…

…then from the Obama administration, for billions and billions of dollars.

                      Massachusetts…your own worst enemy…? Yes !

Mitt’s cut to Medicare will put the burden of healthcare solely on the state’s tax-payer dollars.

They can not afford that, and the healthcare plan will wither away.

Furthermore, the Romney care plan, will cut Medicaid by 700 billion dollars.

More facts…By the year 2022 ( only ten years down the road ), Obama care will have 33 million more people under health care coverage.

Romney care will have 18 million fewer Americans with health care coverage.

These are all facts contributed by Jonathan Gruber, the designer of Romney’s MA healthcare plan.
