Two high-profile Republicans argued Wednesday that Mitt Romney's background in business might not directly apply to his work as a potential president.
The Republican presidential nominee often touts his time in the private sector as one of his top qualifications to be president. But conservative columnist Bill Kristol and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (a primary foe of Romney's) said that might not be enough to sustain Romney in the White House.

Speaking at a Brookings Institution panel discussion, both men expressed doubt that treating government like a business – an idea on which Romney and other candidates have campaigned – might not be as effective as Romney thinks.
“I think his attitude will be efficiency – I’m going to come in and look at government like a business, which isn’t always the right answer because government isn’t a business,” Huntsman said.
Kristol added that Romney’s presidential resume is “thin,” given that he only governed for one term as Massachusetts and that his business experience “isn’t comparable.”

He also said that, as campaigns focus more on rhetoric than substance, they’ve grown.
The Weekly Standard editor said there is a wider chasm between politicking and policy compared to previous presidential election cycles.
“If you have a conversation with Stuart Stevens, who’s running the Romney campaign, and then have a conversation with Mike Leavitt who’s running the Romney transition, it’s just two different worlds. Obama’s a little more complicated and I don’t have that many private conversations with his top people, but I honestly think it would not be that dissimilar,” Kristol said.
Regardless of who wins next month, Kristol said either Obama or Romney will have a short but important window to act on their legislative priorities -- including tax reform -- given the need for Congress to come together over a deal to head off the looming “fiscal cliff,” a combination of spending cuts and tax increases scheduled for the end of the year.
“I think 2013 becomes a big entitlement reform, tax reform, budget reform moment,” Kristol said, suggesting whoever wins would quickly apply his post-election political capital (of which Kristol insisted there would be some, regardless of how close the vote is) to work on a “huge legislative agenda.”

I didn't see buyer's remorse in the article. Not sure if you even read it. But what I did read is the fact that we are heading to a fiscal cliff. I certainly don't think Obama has any answers as to how to fix this problem. He just keeps spending and is pushing us over the cliff.

Government is a business and should be ran as such. A balanced budget is very important. The most important thing in being a President is showing leadership and Obama hasn't done that either. Obama has shown he can't run anything other than a political campaign.

Let's all think back to September 2008 and the financial storm that had developed and the whole government and the rest of the world that was unraveling in financial markets. The jobs were going down so fast that and the United States had suffered the worst crisis sense the great depression.
Then Obama takes over on January 20, 2009, and suddenly it's his fault. No way! Obama stepped into this storm on the brink of depression, and Obama has done a GREAT job of turning the country around.
I honestly have to say anyone that doesn't recognize this fact is pretty out of touch with reality, and living in "Rush World."

Use other people's money to buy a company or controlling interest in a company. They cut the labor force to the bone, jettison the retirement packages, force the company to take on a huge amount of debt, all the while paying themselves huge bonuses and "management" fees.
It doesn't matter if the company survives and people lose their jobs. Bain makes money...period. They don't create jobs. They create wealth.

Maybe Jersey Girl, it is because we have heard him be on both sides of the issues many times. Can you name any issue that he stands firm on and has any conviction with? That does not sound like integrity to me, and doesn't sound like being honest either. I don't consider not showing his tax returns like every other presidential candidate has done over the past decade being very honest, Not wanting to deal with opponents going over them isn't a good excuse either. Haven't others had to put up with the same when they released theirs.
Jackie - when you post a summary of your returns it certainly smells awfully strange. Mitt clearly doesn't want them reviewed. He either didn't leave Bain when he claims he did or he took the tax amnesty deal. Either way - he's less than honest and not the man we need to run the country.

I had the misfortune of see/hear Mitt first hand at the winter games in S.L.C./Park City.
I was a volunteer. Mitt was upset about the markers on the cross country.
The ground was so frozen that when some came out, the Volunteers were trying to get them back in place, Mr Mouth came along a said a few foul f words about the intelligence and competency of the volunteers. A Young woman started to cry and left. A few of the guys would have liked to kick his uppity butt, but did nothing. It was on the news that evening. Mitt was the ONLY paid person there that day.
He is an arrogant, egotistical, pompous ass. And this comes from a Former Republican AND a Mormon. Yea, I know mitt.
The man needs a heart, he has NONE.
The REAL deal would have been Jon Huntsman. He made a great Governor. I was Very upset when Obama picked him to go to China. (still think he did it because Huntsman could take the Presidency in 2012)

President Obama came into office and we were losing 800,000 jobs per month. We lost millions of jobs because of failed Republican policies allowing Romney to pay a lower tax rate than Joe the Plumber. When Obama's policies were put in place, we began creating jobs.
Even though we lost 4 million jobs because of the last Republican President's bad policies, today we have regained those jobs. Today, even house builders are reporting their best year since 2007.
Isn't it time Republicans listen to businesses like Marriott, Disney, home builders, etc who are all begging that we do not change course. They like what they see right now and are projecting 2013 to be a very good year. Vote Obama to help American businesses.

Back in May, Mr. Romney touted the idea of an amendment to the Constitution that would require 3 years of private sector experience as part of the eligibility requirements to be President. Under such a plan, some pretty darn good Presidents on both sides of the political aisle would be ineligible...
Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower all would have been ineligible under such an amendment. John McCain would not have been able to run four years ago.
By contrast, here are 6 successful businessmen who failed as President...
1. Andrew Johnson - Ran a successful business out of his home as a tailor but became the first President ever to be impeached.
2. Warren Harding - Successful editor and publisher of the Marion Daily Star but his presidency was marked with a number of scandals, most notably the Teapot Dome.
3. Herbert Hoover - Made a fortune in mining but couldn't dig his way out of The Great Depression.
4. Jimmy Carter - Successful peanut farmer...one-term President.
5. George H.W. Bush - Became a millionaire running Zapata Petroleum. The economy ran into trouble in the early '90s and his popularity rating the day before the election was at 37%.
6. "The 43rd President of the United States" - Ran several petroleum companies and a baseball team. First President with an MBA. As President, ballooned debt and deficits and ended with one of the worst records of job creation ever.

Presidents are supposed to be visionaries, not managers, but having some managerial experience helps. Presidents draw in broad strokes, set goals, promote ideas and themes.
When I was a little kid President Kennedy said we would absolutely, without a single shred of doubt, land a MAN on the MOON and BRING HIM BACK HOME SAFELY, when we had barely succeeded in orbiting the earth. The technology did not even exist in THEORY and he had the AUDACITY the cojones, to tell this to the whole wide world, literally forcing our hand. Oh and by the way, if that wasn't enough of a challenge, he gave us less than a decade to accomplish it. ""..by the end of this decade (1960's) We did it with time to spare!
We don't have that kind of leadership any more. We can't even get a metaphysical ..."car out of a ditch", let alone land a person on the moon and bring them back safely, even though we have more technology in our pockets than the entire manned space center combined did 43 years ago. It isn't about technology, it's about vision.

I agree with Seeking Sanity. I think Obama does have a vision, and has voiced it several times....on getting all Americans back to work, getting a living wage, and raising the middle class back up. If doing that, it will make all Americans more prosperous and help get the middle class back to having some disposable income to invest back into the economy. I feel that has a similar tone to Kennedy...and I have seen many times when he has asked for ideas and provisions from the republicans....reaching across the aisle, using the republican ideas and policies, only to get slapped down and the republicans voting against their own ideas.
