Biden says middle class has been 'buried over the last four years'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Returning to the home city of the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Joe Biden said  that the two men on the GOP ticket have their wires crossed on whether or not the Obama administration has raised taxes.

"Even Romney had what we Catholics call an epiphany," Biden said of the GOP nominee's recent message slip on taxes. "Romney came out and ... said, 'they have not raised taxes on the middle class.' But apparently Paul Ryan has not gotten the memo!"

As the presidential candidates prepare for Wednesday's debate, Vice President Joe Biden spoke about the "buried" middle class, prompting the Romney campaign to suggest the President's policies are to blame. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Romney said last week at a campaign stop in Ohio that Obama intends to raise taxes, something the president "did not do in his first four years."

While Obama has not raised tax rates, he has signed legislation -- particularly his health care law -- that Republicans argue would yield major penalties for many middle class families.

Biden argued that the GOP, in contrast, would raise taxes on a middle class that has "been buried over the last four years."

That comment earned a scathing response from Republicans, who called it  "a stunning admission" about the White House's economic policies.

"Vice President Biden made a stunning admission today and we couldn’t agree more: the middle class has been ‘buried’ under the last four years of this President’s policies," the Romney campaign wrote in a press release.

Biden, who acknowledged that riders on Air Force Two had "queasy stomachs" after a bumpy ride to North Carolina, kept the crowd of about 1000 waiting for an hour due to the inclement weather upon arrival.

His plane aborted one landing attempt In Charlotte because of storms in the area and was forced to circle the airport for about a half hour before landing without further incident.

I need to know who is fixing to take away my tax refund for all the interest I pay on my mortgage every month.

That would be Obama when the tax cuts expire. Although I think it may be on the second house.

Ah Joe....every time you speak, I can't help to think the needle went a little deep during your hair plug proceedure! So the middle class has been buried the last four years? Wow, great observation! And who was in office those four years Joe? Oh that's right.... you!

But you don't seem to be doing so poorly being a CAREER politician that NEVER worked in the private sector. You have that beautiful house on the coast of Delaware, that the builder constructed at a deep discount, not to mention that amazing mortgage that only politicians seem to get.

You go Joe, right back to DE! I can't help to think what a landslide this election would be if you were replaced by Hillary....

Yep, repubs have specialized in dividing the nation into the richer and the poorer and the middle class dissppears because of that, simplest way to put their strategy and the results. You see the middle class is very expensive for the rich to develop, they just want a few poor folks around to do all the work for them while they sit back in expensive suits in CEO Board meetings figuring out how to avoid taxes and make their stocks go up whether even if it is through pure trickery and BS. Oh, there may be a few that don't do that anymore...maybe Buffet can name a few.

Biden is correct that the middle class has been buried under Obama. Wonder if the WH will make the talk show circuit and blame it on an obsure video instead of Obama's failures.

As a first time poster and admittedly not as politically well read as most on this forum, I would just like to voice my average guy opinion. President Obama has made some decisions that I don't particulary agree with but overall, I support his policies and the direction he is taking the country. My 94 year old mother would disagree but she believes the Republican party is still run the same way Eisenhower ran it. There would still be a choice if that were true. I do not believe all republicans are "bad" people, (my mothers not) but I do think what we have today is not what the republican party once stood for. Hopefully the republicans can find their true values again and give us a real choice. Just my opinion.

            Reply#35 - Tue Oct 2, 2012 4:55 PM EDT

Opinions are like buttholes. Everyone has one.

It's the economy, stupid. Obama has done very little to change the dismal economy, reduce high unemployment, stem the housing crisis, and, now, the Middle East foreign policy, if there is one, is in shambles.

If you think that Obama has us moving in the right direction and there's a light at the end of the tunnel, then what you don't know is that light is an oncoming train.

Both Obama and Romney are likeable people. The major difference is that Obama has no 'juice' in the business world or international stage, other than speech making. The jury is still out on Romney. But the verdict with Obama is a huge thumbs down.

I'm going to watch the debates. But, knowing how the media is they'll all be reporting on Thursday that Obama has this thing won already. I'm tired of the media bias toward Obama, it's almost laughable really. Some of the stuff CNN was reporting about a Romney speech in Ohio the other day was completely false. I had a friend who was there and read about it later and was saying none of what CNN said even happened. If you sit back and look at verything Obama has done, or hasn't done then he should be racked over the coals by the media but he isn't, just gets a free pass. If a Republican was stinking up the joint as bad as Obama is then you can bet that guy would be crucified by the press. Sorry but the whole bold face lie about Libya told me a lot about this president.

In 2004, Democrats insisted the MSM was in the tank for Bush, and the polls were all biased towards Bush. That is because Kerry was losing. You never hear the winners complain about media bias. As far as Republicans' complaint about poll bias, Nate Silver showed that polls over the decades have not shown any particular bias or inaccuracy based on the eventual results.

In other words, this is what losers do in anticipation of a loss. They prepare their excuses.

                http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/29/poll-averages-have-no-history-of-consistent-partisan-bias/

In the 10 presidential elections since 1972, there have been five years (1976, 1980, 1992, 1996 and 2004) in which the national presidential polls overestimated the standing of the Democratic candidate. However, there were also four years (1972, 1984, 1988 and 2000) in which they overestimated the standing of the Republican. Finally, there was 2008, when the average of likely voter polls showed Mr. Obama winning by 7.3 percentage points, his exact margin of victory over John McCain, to the decimal place.

In all but three years, the partisan bias in the polls was small, with the polling average coming within 1.5 percentage points of the actual result. (I use the term “bias” in a statistical sense, meaning simply that the results tended to miss toward one direction.)

It is supposed to be the job of a journalist to seek truth and report his/her honest findings. That is hardly what we now have. When mainstream media has become the state's media, we are in deep caca. Ask how that worked in Russia and dozens of other countries.

Biden has always been something of a loose cannon for the Democrats. In this case, he is right about the middle class being torched over the last four years: if you are poor, you are getting help through a variety of government aid programs; if you are rich, you don't need it; if you are in the middle, you are toasted by declining home values, dropping wages, job loss, etc.

Of course, what Biden didn't say (the party line) is that things would be much worse if someone else was President. This is all based on the notion that Obama needs "another term to finish the job." Whatever. Four years is long enough. The green shoots are turning brown. I guess Recovery Summer wasn't built to last.

I love that this article talks as much about Romney's comment as it does Biden's. He said what he believes here and not what he was supposed to say. The truth is that the middle class has been buried by the Obama administration. End of story.

Joe Biden said what so many Americans are feeling every day. "For four years, the middle class has been buried" by Obama's failed policies from higher taxes to more debt which is why he has a difficult time explaining why he deserves another term in the White House."

                        Too funny...
