Biden says middle class has been 'buried over the last four years'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Returning to the home city of the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Joe Biden said  that the two men on the GOP ticket have their wires crossed on whether or not the Obama administration has raised taxes.

"Even Romney had what we Catholics call an epiphany," Biden said of the GOP nominee's recent message slip on taxes. "Romney came out and ... said, 'they have not raised taxes on the middle class.' But apparently Paul Ryan has not gotten the memo!"

As the presidential candidates prepare for Wednesday's debate, Vice President Joe Biden spoke about the "buried" middle class, prompting the Romney campaign to suggest the President's policies are to blame. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Romney said last week at a campaign stop in Ohio that Obama intends to raise taxes, something the president "did not do in his first four years."

While Obama has not raised tax rates, he has signed legislation -- particularly his health care law -- that Republicans argue would yield major penalties for many middle class families.

Biden argued that the GOP, in contrast, would raise taxes on a middle class that has "been buried over the last four years."

That comment earned a scathing response from Republicans, who called it  "a stunning admission" about the White House's economic policies.

"Vice President Biden made a stunning admission today and we couldn’t agree more: the middle class has been ‘buried’ under the last four years of this President’s policies," the Romney campaign wrote in a press release.

Biden, who acknowledged that riders on Air Force Two had "queasy stomachs" after a bumpy ride to North Carolina, kept the crowd of about 1000 waiting for an hour due to the inclement weather upon arrival.

His plane aborted one landing attempt In Charlotte because of storms in the area and was forced to circle the airport for about a half hour before landing without further incident.

4 years ago they were saying if Obama is elected he will take away are guns we will become a socialistic Muslim country ( That made no sense when it was said both are against each other). So far none of that has happened the problem is not him but the congress the republicans have said from the day he was elected number one job was to make sure he is not a 2 term president. They have stop blocked any bill to get jobs going or to help the middle class and play on peoples fears. I have asked around and most have say they are better off than 4 years ago.

Oh, Democrats controlled both houses of congress 2006-2010. What did Obama do his first two years in office? On blocking bills, who is holding twenty some bills passed by the house and will not introduce them in the senate? You and some of your friends may be better off than four years ago, but the country as a whole is not. Personal income is down, unemployment is up, millions out of work and cannot find a job. Better, not hardly.

    Oh good grief

Oh, come on.....it's always the republicans fault - give me a break with your one-sided lack of knowledge. Both sides had put forth jobs programs and NEITHER side would agree. So, for all you who fall for the mainstream media one sided reporting methods and believe it - get some smarts and do your own research, who knows...it probably won't change your mind but it may make you just a little bit more prepared for when they stick it to you with a nice word and a smile on their face!

Weeks before Embassy attack in Libya, Ambassador Stevens had been requesting the White House/State Dept. beef up security at the Embassy.........request denied. After the "demonstration" we were told by the Obama White House, it was not a "planned attack", just a "spontaneous" demonstration, over a "video" on youtube that only had "300 hits", before attack. Now Obama is throwing the CIA under the bus, to cover up the bump in the road...........when all else fails...............lie. The Obama administration lies and people die.

I do think that Obama has brought out the worst in people, not the best. On all sides and in at all income levels, there are good and bad. Before he even entered the White House as President his vitriole and misdirected tirades at big business created the initial boom and mass layoffs that occurred within 4 months of his taking office. He's harmed the ability of businesses and workers to work towards the greater good. Everything he represents and spouts off is meant to create distrust, animosity, fear and confrontation. I can't see anything good within this man's heart or spirit that is based on reflective analysis. So much is out there for him to read and absorb but he chooses to simply repeat a divisive mantra meant to get into the heads of people not strong enough to see the truths.
For a President that claims to believe in diversity, inclusiveness, tolerance and holds the honor of Nobel Peace laureate every position he takes and every policy and agenda he triest to slam through, is in complete opposition to those viritues. America is living in a time of incredible vices and menacing tactics. Bringing out the worst in others, is not the sign of a good President guided by the forces of light and peace. I do not respect his values or his approach at communicating his visions and values. He has made America edgy, tense, anxious, and hyper reactionary. His diarrhea of the mouth has caused a lot of conflicts that never needed to be so intense. We've always been a country of differing opions. But we've never been as intolerant and irrational as we are today.

That's one theory. But there was also a housing crash and indications that the country was heading for recession since 2006. But your theory...well it's ONE theory.

He's harmed the ability of businesses and workers to work towards the greater good. Everything he represents and spouts off is meant to create distrust, animosity, fear and confrontation.....he chooses to simply repeat a divisive mantra meant to get into the heads of people not strong enough to see the truths.

There is another party out there who's main campaign theme is division.

        Makers vs. Takers

        47%

        30%

Half the country doesn't pay federal income taxes

Separating the country based on religious beliefs -- Muslim is bad, Christian good

I don't think you know of whom you speak when you say Obama is responsible for this.

For a President that claims to believe in diversity, inclusiveness, tolerance and holds the honor of Nobel Peace laureate every position he takes and every policy and agenda he triest to slam through, is in complete opposition to those viritues.

        Healthcare for everyone

Tax policy that represents a need

Creating jobs for those who would rather work than be at home collecting a check

I wonder if you can back up what you're saying with facts or if you're just spewing generalizations because you don't know what's going on in our government.

Bringing out the worst in others

People who are racist, sexist or homophobic often blame the people they don't like for their own hateful nature. I don't consider all Republicans *ists but there's enough to cause problems like this.

We've always been a country of differing opions. But we've never been as intolerant and irrational as we are today.

Really? You must live in Mayberry because out here in the real world, people like me have been dealing with intolerence and irrational hate all our lives. It's just bubbled to the surface recently because we have a president who achieved what many thought a man of my race never would.

Biden was right. The problem with the Republicans is that their prescription is to give huge tax cuts to the wealthy and take tax cuts away from the middle class.

How will that help the middle class?

What gaffe? The middle class has been disappearing for the last 30 years thanks to Reaganomics. Just look at the income gap in this country. Joe Biden should have said 30 years and not 4. I think Americans are tired of living under a Plutocracy.

              Considering all the GOP's gaffes, double-downs, walk-backs, flip-flops, 47%, the recently Ryan's 30%, and words taken out of context. Grandpa Joe Biden was taken way out of context;

"How they can justify raising taxes on the middle class that's been buried the last four years? How in the Lord's name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts?"

Since Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a hard time with math, they most likely have a problem with the english language.

Grandpa Joe was clearly speaking about the GOP's threat of "raising taxes" on the middle class during the recession. That very GOP threat was buried (ended, laid to rest, put under, put away, never more, etc.) with the Bush Tax Cuts and when President Obama extended the Bush Tax Cuts (H.R. 4853) in 2010. Oh by the way, Representative Paul Ryan voted against the amendment that would raise taxes for the wealthy.

Romney and Ryan are acting like two desperate hungry dogs fighting over a negligible gristle of meat.

We need a better definition of that middle class is. People who make $200,000 are not middle class to me. People who buy homes for uo to $675,000 are not middle class and yet get low interest rates from Freddie mack and Fannie may. Maybe it should be : low income, middle class, well off, and rich. I have never known anyone who makes over $50,000 a year. Yet we are considered middle class.

Look at the lack of intelligence running this country--Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Holder, etc. No wonder why were are in grave trouble. Another 4 years of the Obama administration would result in $23 Trillion deficit, $6-8 gallon gas, 8% plus unemployment, and a failed foreign policy in the middle east.

Are these ReThuglicans grasping at straws now ... they knew, and the American people knew, EXACTLY what Biden was meaning. Come the vice-president debate, I'm pretty sure Joe Biden can carve the likes of Ryan up like a Thanksgiving turkey ... Ryan doesn't have the answers to the HARD questions because his boss his boss doesn't know 'em himself.

This party is DESPERATE, people ... seriously! By the time the election arrives, ReThuglican contributors will have donated OVER $2 billion to the ReThuglicans, and the ReThugs know, if they lose this election, their party is in major jeopardy. Three Supreme Court Justices will be named during this next 4-years as one liberal, two conservative judges prepare to retire. The ReTHugs know this is a critical situation, letting "liberalism" take the country back. As for the MIDDLE CLASS, the burying of the Middleclass started over 30 years ago with "Walks On Water" Reagan and his Trickle Down - Reagonomics - Voodoo" policies. That's where the shrinking of the middleclass started ... the TRICKLE DOWN was yellow, though. Your BOYS ... Ryan & Romney want to double down on those very same policies.

So, go ahead, RETHUGLICANS ... blame President Obama for the credit rating downgrade, nat'l debt, lost jobs, etc ... go ahead, pleazzzzzzzze do this during the debates. All these things have the Republican stink smelling all over them ... everyone of them. You RETHUGS have one thing ... money, and you think that will BUY the election ... NOT!

Politicians looking for savings to deal with the national debt crisis should perhaps start by abolishing the President.

Barack Obama and his family cost the taxpayer $1.4billion per year, according to a recently published book.

By contrast, the British Royal Family costs less than $60million each year.

You mean like the Cambridge incident, Beardown?

Very good example. How many statements has Obama made about Cambridge? He said the cop were stupid and didn't have another comment.

How many statements has he made about Fast and Furious? Not only did he do 2 full interviews on the subject and wish his condolences for the family, he still fields questions about occassionally.

My point is that POTUS isn't responsible for every federal employee no matter what you guys think. That's not how our government works.

The problem for you guys is that after Issa's witchhunt, Holder and Obama were completely cleared. Now you've had that as a talking point for over 2 years and let it go.

Again, expecting POTUS to comment on every botched investigation in the country is ridiculous. Let it go, it was a good Fox News story but doesn't go to the folks.
