DENVER – Mitt Romney used his final scheduled public appearance before Wednesday's first presidential debate to dismiss the expectations game played by both campaigns in recent weeks and to rally supporters with retooled economic rhetoric geared towards middle class voters.
"People want to know who’s going to win," Romney said of the debate at the nearby University of Denver. "Who’s going to score the punches and who’s going to make the biggest difference in the arguments they make."
"There’s going to be all the scoring of winning and losing, and you know, in my view, it’s not so much winning and losing or even the people themselves — the president and myself — it’s about something bigger than that," Romney continued, dismissing the parlor game of expectations-setting that has defined much of the political discourse in recent days.
In his own form of spin, Romney said he was "delighted" about the chance to debate President Obama three times in the next month and declared that the debates, taken in sum, would "be conversation with the American people that will span almost an entire month."
Before a raucous crowd of more than 5,000 supporters, Romney infused his economic talking points with a middle-class focus that perhaps spoke to the recent debate prep designed to refine his message to best appeal to undecided voters.
"Income is down some $ 4,300 dollars a family and with a median income of about $50,000 dollars that means things are really tough for the American people," Romney said. "The middle class squeeze has been unbearable. Gasoline prices way up; food prices up; electricity prices up; health insurance prices up. The American middle class is struggling under this president."
In interviews before the event, Colorado supporters uniformly told NBC News that if Romney needed to show more of a personal understanding of middle class life on Wednesday if he wanted to siphon support from the president
"I really think that Mitt needs to be more personal with the American people," said Renee Salza, a Realtor and Republican who is supporting Romney. "I think a lot of people feel he's somewhat aloof and disconnected from everyday Americans."
Romney, who referenced Colorado's defense community at NORAD and the Air Force Academy, was also joined by a state icon of a different sort, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, who endorsed Romney in a brief on-stage appearance.
“I must say today has been a very good day, not only because of what happened yesterday," Elway said, referencing the Broncos' thrashing of rival Oakland yesterday, "because I get the opportunity to introduce to you the next president of the United States, Governor Mitt Romney.”

All republicans this is for real. If you can influence Romney to make a clean break from George W. and his policies during the debates it can be a game changer for Romney. I'm sure many Americans would like to take another look ar Romney but when Romney will not seperate himself from Bush it is a clear choice of who they have to vote for ( not necessarily who they want to vote for but who they have to vote for).
I think the only possible way Romeny could gain enough ground from the debate is if Obama makes some massive gaffe, like "the 47%" massive.

Perhaps Jesus would look at actions. Somehow I think anyone who is able to start a religion based on specific principles would be more interested in how someone acts and whether they follow those principles. In fact, I suspect He would be a lot more upset with those who profess to believe in Him and yet refuse to follow what He taught.

That line is a flat out and out lie. The lawsuit filed simply said that Ohio couldn't cut early voting for the regular population while keeping it in place for the military. Nobody, even the Ohio Repubs, were trying to take away military voting rights.

Mitt Romney is a very smart, savvy, business man. Anyone thinking that Obama is a shoe in for this re-election is seriously underestimating Romney. Although I am an Obama man and will vote for Obama again, I respect Romney for who and what he is. He did not get where he is being anything but driven and sharp.

Let explore what a Mitt presidency would be like. A House pushing abortion bills and Medicare vouchers and Social Security higher ages for retirement. A Dem senate seeking payback doing what the Republicans did to Obama. Mitt crying for compromise. The deficit exploding or the Military facing huge cuts to keep the promise of no new taxes. Lower class tax bill increasing to the point they will have no stake in this economy and will drop out and go into petty crime and drugs and alcohol. Violent crime will once again rise. Frustration will over come reason. Foreign policy will be by gut feelings and a need for distraction. We could be the new Soviet Union, then what will we change into the Old China?
I am supporting Obama myself.
Is abortion and birth control really a major issue? Besides, the President really has no say over all that. It's the Justice dept. and the states. Medicare is already being hit hard by the laws in obamacare. 56% of doctors in this country are voting for Romney. Now, under obamacare, iF you have knee surgery under medicare and have to go back to the hospital to fix something medicare will not pay the hospital bills. Either you live with the problem or you pay the hospital bills. Medicare will not pay for returning hospital bills once you are released from the hospital.
Sorry, it's time for a new administration. And if that doesn't work than we bring another new administration in 2016. Obama, and everyone else in office, has to go Nov. 6! Fire Them All!
The problem "Flip" is going to have at the debate is if he's not reading from a teleprompter he's lost. When he conveys his own thoughts, he keeps digging himself into a deeper hole he can't possibly dig himself out of. I am sure Barack will ask him for details concerning his tax initiatives. He will offer some generalities without any specifics or documentation. His usual game plan. This is the reason "Flip" is playing down his expectations for the debate. In other words don't get your hopes up because there's little hope for success.
The WH is "playing down" expectations also.
